i’ve been connecting plankton and lace together in my mind for a couple of months and attempting to create designs inspired by both, and I think I finally cracked it. i was gifted some lovely white suede a while ago and finally was able to put it to use! I designed a lace doily pattern inspired by mantis shrimp larvae digitally, then transferred it to the suede and cut it out by hand with my fabric shears. I think the fragility and delicacy of plankton really gives itself to lace designs. really happy with this piece and wondering how I can make this a series of multiple different planktonic species all as doilies :)
Just wanted to share my latest miniature - I'm calling it 'Bloom' and it will be part of the 'Stories of Home' exhibit at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives later next month :)
I tried a few new techniques for this, and I'm happy with how it all came together. The flowers posed some slight issues here and there, and I have a few floral rejects. I'll probably revisit this technique again in the future and make a few other smaller versions.
According to my Facebook memories it's been four years now since I started working on my first real embroidery project. Four years since I got irretrievably hooked on embroidery! So in honor of that, here is a repost of the project that started it all.
Side note, if you look close you can literally see the learning process in this piece. I think so at least. I can tell which of the big flowers was the first one stitched, and which was the last, simply by the quality of the satin stitch. And I can tell which bullion knots are less practiced. Etc.
To get a clean fold when making a 1/1 rib folded neck or cuff, you work a double knitting round, i.e. slip the purl stitches with the yarn in front and knit the knit stitches.
It’s done, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out! From the back there’s something that feels very ‘early-mid 90s aviator covered in patches and graphics’, or even a little battle jacket-y, which wasn’t deliberate but I definitely don’t hate it!
Also it’s fully symmetrical top and bottom, so there’s no reason I can’t wear it with Grog and Vax at my shoulders sometimes if I want.
Here’s the link to the project page on Ravelry, which has some technical details of how I turned the squares into this cardi:

PHEW.... just over a month of work but it's done 👏 As usual at the end I feel like a couple colors could have been changed but... I'm not doing this one again lmao
