#Files and folder data recover

Text
I got up this morning and the world didn’t want to fistfight me! It’s gonna be an okay day. I got a bunch of paperwork done and went through the Europe file one last time to make sure I wasn’t missing anything, then printed it.
One of the reasons I wanted to print at the UPS store is that while I HAVE a printer, and it even prints in color, it doesn’t print very well in color, and it was being fussy about being low on ink. When I force-printed what I needed, however, it came out fine. I also cleaned for the catsitter including pruning my windowsill garden, pulled together enough cash to leave out as tips, and assembled all the trash that needs to be taken out.
My replacement phone will be an upgrade because Pixel no longer makes the 5a, so I also bought a new case for it and a new popsocket to stick on the back, since the popsocket on the old case cracked in half when I tried to pull it off (it was a promotional pop from a CRM I hate, so no great loss).
It is looking more and more like the damage to my phone is internal and I may not be able to pull any data off it. I don’t back up my photos to the cloud, but because of that I’m diligent about backups -- the only month I’ll lose is April. Which is a bummer, but a lot of the photos are either here on tumblr or were texted to people, and I can recover those. I’m going to have to rebuild my file of pictures of my niece, but like, what a chore, sifting through all my photos for all my pictures of her. How will I survive. I also had a “reference” folder of photos of documents and reaction images I use frequently but it probably needed cleaning out anyway. There are a handful of notes I kept on my phone that will be a pain in the ass to lose, but the important ones were backed up.
I’m working on figuring out if I ever backed up my podcast subscriptions, but if anything could use a cleaning-out it’s definitely my podcasts. Besides, there’s lists of what I follow floating around on this tumblr somewhere.
The greatest loss in the end may be if I can’t pull a backup of my Merge Dragons game off of Facebook. It was my anxiety game early in the pandemic and I’m very attached to it, but I can always start with a fresh game. Otherwise I think the calamity is survivable.
Good phone hygiene is one of the coping mechanisms I developed for having undiagnosed ADHD while owning a Distraction Machine that lived in my pocket at all times. Keeping important stuff on the cloud so it was accessible from multiple locations, while keeping stuff like photos and music frequently backed up, is about to really save my ass.

This prompt is from The Learning Network at the NYT. This is clearly designed for use by teachers in classrooms, but hey, we’re all students in the school of life, so here’s the PDF of 500 prompts: https://static01.nyt.com/images/blogs/learning/pdf/2014/500PromptsNarrativeAndPersonalWriting.pdf
9/23/24
How productive and organized are you?
I find that I am actually getting much more organized lately, especially at work. There’s always so much going on and so many different projects happening simultaneously, so I am always taking notes, making checklists, curating calendars, creating filing systems and so on. Last year, I successfully moved everything on my work computer from internal server-based storage into cloud-based storage. That took quite some doing, but it was well worth it, especially when I briefly needed to work from home as my mom recovered from knee replacement surgery at my house. I also created systems for labeling and filing away different kinds of documents, making them much easier for me to refer back to later.
Recently, we’ve been starting to incorporate Microsoft Loop into the rotation of things we’re using to keep our projects together - and I’m enjoying it so much that I even sought out and watched videos to learn more about the service. I really enjoy the work I do, but I guess if I were to think about a big-time career change (not just doing what I do now but elsewhere), I’d consider looking into project management or something like that.
Which is very funny considering that, in my school days, I was often forced into the role of “the one kid who ends up doing everything in the group project because everyone else slacks off” and I resented that. I didn’t want my own grades to suffer, so I did the work, but I wasn’t happy about it. Things have changed, haven’t they? Now I enjoy being the one with all the filing systems, checking in on projects, taking notes.
I’ve even started to use a pen-and-paper planner after years of just putting things in the calendar on my phone. I do still do that also, but in addition to that, I have a Hobonichi Techo Weeks planner. My coworker put me on to it. She had a spare blue leather cover for a Weeks planner and gave it to me near the end of last year, inspiring me to head over to Kinokuniya and purchase a 2024 planner to go in it. I enjoy using it and also write about good things that happen every day on one side of the weekly layout. I do wish they had included a 366th day in the daily check-off page, though. Like, how do you manage to forget 2024 is a leap year? It’s literally on the calendar. You are a planner company. Plan for it!
Another organization project I am working on, though just bit-by-bit, is organizing my photos and backing them up to a portable hard drive. I’m going through each year’s photos, as downloaded from Google Takeout, and removing any ones that are blurry or whatnot. I’m also putting memes into a different folder. That process is slower going, but it’s in progress.
I think all this organization is good for my brain, too. I’m prone to anxiety, the fear that I am forgetting about something, and if I don’t write things down then I’m afraid they will just fade away and disappear from my brain like deleting data from a video game memory card. The processes - writing things down, making lists, keeping calendars, taking notes - are all therapeutic in their own way and contribute to my productivity at work and in my personal life.

The Sims 3 - optimize the game, lessen lag, improve performance, reduce loading time, prevent corruption and file bloat.
In this section, we will compile tips and tricks in optimizing your game for a much better gameplay experience. Post is divided into following categories: clearing cache, essential mods, saving, cleaning saves, in-game tweaks + tips & tricks.
Before starting, we wholeheartedly recommend a thorough reading of the Steam community's Guide on the game's performance below:
Steam Community :: Guide :: The Sims 3 Performance & Bug Fix Guide 2023
Steam Community :: Guide :: The Sims 3 Enhanced Vanilla Graphics
Steam Community :: Guide :: The Sims 3 Enhanced Vanilla Game-Play
WARNING: Before attempting anything, we suggest backing up your The Sims 3 folder somewhere safe, in case of irreversible actions. Backing up is performed by copying your The Sims 3 folder, and pasting it somewhere safe (Desktop, another drive, external drive, etc.). Carl's Tutorial on Backup & Restore.
1. Clearing cache in The Sims 3 folder.
Caches are temporary files and folders created by the game, which contain the information to help your game load faster. Their accumulation over the time can be attributed to slower loading times and/or gameplay. These files are regenerated each time the game is started, so it is absolutely safe and normal to delete them.
In the following post, we thoroughly explained which files and folders are cache, and can be deleted:
Clearing cache
2. Essential mods for better gameplay
With the amount of official game packs, store and other custom content, a laggier & slower gameplay is inevitable. If you do not have a Mods folder, please refer to Carl's Guide on making Mods folder.
For a better performance and a long lasting save file, we're going to list absolutely necessary mods + what they do:
nraas - ErrorTrap - a core-mod intended to catch and correct data corruption errors that can render a save-game unloadable.
nraas - Overwatch - performs periodical clean up, usually around 3am in-game. Turns off unnecessary electronics, clears up inactive cars piling up, recovers missing Sims and wandering toddlers, checks stuck age-up problems and more.
nraas - MasterController - allows more advanced functions in-game. MasterController Cheats module is necessary for the ability to reset town in longer game sessions (City Hall > NRAAS > Master Controller > Town > Reset Everything). Action takes 5-10 minutes and resets every Sim and every object in town, contributes to resetting anything (or anyone) glitchy. We recommend once-a-Sim-week reset, and saving after such reset.
nraas - Register - allows the player to disable certain NPCs (service and role Sims) in the town. We suggest it for the ability to disable paparazzis, tourists, homeless Sims, stray animals, unicorns, wild horses, etc.
nraas - Traffic - ability to control (and reduce) the traffic (taxis, limos) and special trucks (Food truck, ice cream truck, pet ice cream truck).
nraas - Traveler - created in purpose of catching and correcting bugs and problems in EA's travel code. Allows the possibility of traveling between worlds players have installed.
nraas - Saver - a Saving prompt that comes up every 30 minutes by default. More explained in the Saving section below.
Mod The Sims - Smooth Patch 2.1 - created with intentions of smoother gameplay, less lag, shorter loading and smooth UI. IMPORTANT NOTE: SP versions 2.0 and up are NOT COMPATIBLE with NRAAS mods! For those who wish to use both, we recommend using SP versions 1.x with NRAAS mods + compatibility file provided by LazyDuchess.
Optional mods:
Mod The Sims - No (or fewer) automatic memories - Memories cause a huge amount of save-file bloat. There are three options to combat them: completely disabling memories in-game (below in in-game tips), using a flavor of this mod. Or using NRAAS Master Controller with Cheats (City Hall > NRAAS > Master Controller > Sim > Intermediate > Remove Memories).
Mod The Sims - simler90's Gameplay Core Mod - a core mod set to fix numerous in-game bugs. However, this mod IS NOT COMPATIBLE with several NRAAS mods such as: StoryProgression, GoHere, Traffic, Tagger, Careers, Traveler. To make CoreMOD work with NRAAS Overwatch, players need to follow (Step 4 of this guide) and properly edit the compatibility file.
3. Saving the game
Continuous use of the option Save over the same save-file (overwriting the data) quickly leads into file bloat and eventual corruption, and can help invoke ill-fated "error-code 12". Helping prevent these issues can be combatted by retorting to usage of Save As every often, and changing the save-file name. A way to do it is by writing (Town Name)(Household Name)(Number of save in order) - eg. Sunset Valley Smith 1. This also allows players to keep specific saves they deem important. nraas - Saver is a handy mod that prompts users to save the game under a new name every 30 minutes by default.
On another note - keeping the Saves folder (within TS3 folder) under 4GB is crucial for game performance. Our advice is to keep a minimum of saves in that folder. Others need to be transferred onto a hosting site, or an external device. All saves ending in .bad should be immediately deleted.
4. Cleaning save files
Cleaning save files is a step that should come after all of the previous ones. It's crucial to clean a file every now and then to rid it of unnecessary data, and prevent error-code 12 & 16 and/or corruption.
Mod The Sims - Regul Save Cleaner is currently the fastest, most reliable cleaner. After downloading it, unzip it and open the program. Within the program, open your Save file, check which boxes you wish to clean and click Clear. IMPORTANT NOTE: Back up your Saves before messing with any data within it. Step-by-Step cleaning is also described in step 10 of Steam Guide.
Another, albeit experimental, mean to clean your game using s3pe (from simlogical.com). This heavily detailed nraas - How to use S3PE to clean up your save-game guide shows you how to remove excess data piled by photographs, paintings, memories in-game. We repeat to back-up your save-files before doing anything to them.
5. In-game tweaks and settings
Settings and configurations in-game have a big impact on the gameplay. Depending on player's gaming system, tweaking their settings could speed up their performance. These can be found in game's menu (three dots) > Options. There are several tabs which have adjustable settings.
Graphics - this tab is meant for visual representation of the game. For faster, smoother playback, we recommend keeping the options to Medium (lower if the system can't handle it). Enabling Advanced Rendering, Enabling Animation Smoothing and High Detail Lots being set to a higher number can cause slower playback - adjust the boxes and number to your system's performance.
Sounds - audio options that entirely depend on the player.
General Settings - Things like edge scrolling, 12-hour clock and types of camera are player's choice. But we advise to disable shop mode, usage sharing, memories, lessons and Interactive Loading Screen. Latter can take up double-digit minutes of time in loading.
Game Options - in-game Sim & Pet autonomy and lifespans. All are player's choice.
Video Options - entirely dependent on the player and if they wish to capture anything in-game.
Music Options - list of in-game music.
Online - options to log in the game's website online and connect with other players. We recommend disabling online notifications and disabling Keep Me Logged In option.
Season & Environment - depending on which packs players have, this tab shows configurations for Seasons and Supernatural lunar cycle. The number of days per season can be changed, so can certain Seasons be disabled. Weather can be in Celsius or Fahrenheit. There are four types of weather offered - rain, hail, fog and snow. All but fog have a big impact on the game's performance, so players should disable them, or adjust them accordingly. Active Lunar cycle doesn't have much impact on the gameplay... except for those pesky Zombies during the Full Moon. That's why there's an ability to set the Lunar Cycle to one phase of player's choice, or keep it active per number of selected days.
Advanced Demographics Options - offer the ability to enable or disable built-in EA Story Porgression. Underneath that, depending on which packs player has, there are different categories to enable or disable. Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, Fairies, Pets, Horses and Celebrities. We recommend the player disables what they don't need in their current gameplay, or eventually everything if these Sim types are unneeded. Another option below is to Opt Active Household out of Celebrity System, which doesn't allow active household to gain celebrity points.
Guides we found useful to follow:
Sims 3 Options Overview (carls-sims-4-guide.com)

Steam Community :: Guide :: The Sims 3 Performance & Bug Fix Guide 2023 (Bonus Step: In-game Options - Optional)
6. In-game tips & tricks
Many issues can also be combatted from the gameplay.
Frequent town reset with NRAAS Master Controller + Cheats,
Keeping less to no items in personal inventory + frequent clearing out of townies' inventory with NRAAS MC (City Hall > NRAAS > Master Controller > Town > Object Stats > Inventory).
With rewards like Collections Helper, Tears of Horus, it's best to keep their selector to None.
Items like Sultan's Tabernacle, Axe of Pangu and random relics are known to be stuck in inventory, and cause traveling issues. It's best to not purchase the items, or delete or sell them before traveling.
Speaking of travel, any trip to World Adventure countries, the Future or any other world with twallan's Traveler, it's best to pack light! Less to no items in personal inventory that could cause corruption.
Should your Sim visit a WA country once and never go back - you could remove the .nhd file, remembering you'll lose everything you had related to that country (relationships, etc) - back-up your save before doing this.
Gameplays should not last longer than a couple of hours. After at least two hours, it's time to save as, then quit. Clear your cache, remove unnecessary save files and leave the last one in. Restart the game.
Never go from one save into main menu and then open another save. This is a fertile ground for memory leak and early corruption.
Clearing saved Styles and Presets should also be done for faster loading of CAS/CASt, but back-up your previous files before this.
Regularly check and remove/uninstall custom content you don't need anymore.
Regularly re-download mods and replace them in the Mods folder, in case of possible corruption.
Move your Saved Sims from same-named folder to somewhere safe, then delete the originals.
Captured media (screenshots, videos) should be removed from their respective files to somewhere safe often.
Too much custom music can slow down the game. Files should be in .mp3, no more than 320kbps and in limited amount.
Save files and content files from Downloads folder should be backed up on external drives and cleared from The Sims 3 folder.
Some tips taken from nraas - TIPS FOR BETTER GAME PERFORMANCE, but we recommend reading it all through - they connect The Sims 3 folder, in-game options, your device options and how your device can be affected to cause problematic gameplay.

Ad-free/Private/Anonymous Email services
Disroot.org is a free email service located in the Netherlands.
In addition to [email protected] you also get for free [email protected] and [email protected] addresses! Consider making an account and tossing a few bucks their way.
They also offer a plethora of apps/services for free (and for some you don’t even need an account!)
Their cloud service is powered by NextCloud which works exactly like Dropbox. Sync a folder on your pc, right click on a file to get the link and share it! It’s perfect for sending WIP updates to commissioners. Disroot is run by volunteers and you get a grassroots vibe from their site. I asked them if it was okay if I sold commissions using their email service, they say on a personal/occasional/hobby level it was fine, but not to use their service if I plan to move my entire business there. So I’m only using it for personal stuffs.
They don’t ask for a phone number, a real name or physical address, just a nickname for your account/email address.
-
Mailbox.org
Is what I’ve been using for about four years now. They’re located in Germany.
It’s a paid service, starting at 1 EUR/month. It costs 3 EUR per month if you want to link your personal domain. The only downside is their drive/cloud app which is clunky for the use I need, so I really don’t use it. They offer A LOT of additional email addresses as well as disposable email aliases.
Do you need an email address to check out a free service you probably won’t use? You’ve got it! The address will be gone in 90 days or less, you can delete it and never see an email from them again :D
Do you want one email address per social media account in case one suffers a data leak so no one can try hacking your other profiles? SURE
Do you want a different address for your banking stuffs separate from your shitposting emails? Very much possible here.
Same as Disroot, they’ve never asked for a phone number or physical address. Only one email address has my real name which I use for banking/real life stuffs. All others are under nicknames.
Overall I love mailbox.org and I would just stay with them if it wasn’t for:
-
Tutanota.com
Located in Germany! They have a much better entry pricing for linking custom domain (1 EUR/month) but only work with their proprietary email client.
It offers end-to-end encryption if you care about that sort of thing. They are truly anonymous as they don’t even ask for a name when you make an account. You’ve gotta set that yourself later. Also everything is encrypted, you can’t recover your password, so don’t lose it :)
I’ll move my email with them as soon as their email client starts grouping conversations in one thread. It’s a bit messy at the moment.
They do offer a free tier too! You’ve gotta use it however because free tiers get deleted after a while. Don’t litter!
-
For desktop email client I purchased an emClient license some years ago, they offer ONE TIME PAYMENT purchase. Crazy isn’t it? Everyone wants to bleed you dry with subscription even if you don’t need updates.
I know Thunderbird exists but holy shit it’s clunky. I haven’t looked into other free email clients so I guess this one you can ignore.
-
You can get rid of google and outlook and their tracking advertising bullshit. Their email is free because you’re the product.

DMO: Digimon Military Operatives_51.TXT
I think we got him.
Snatchmon is just finishing some trash data it was having for dinner, unlike the other Snatchmon we've been fighting, this one snitches on itself by showing that it's not used to this body, and needs large amounts of energy to keep itself up, I've been already warned by Damemon that Tyutyumon has a plan, however, it's unrelated to the fight itself, and has more to do with the aftermath, so I can rest knowing that. We can't just burst into the folder Snatchmon is in and attack with no regards, we may burn the files there to ashes, and taking into account that the main attack is MegaloGrowmon's job, attacking carelessly is something we can't let ourselves do, since the files erased by a Virus Attribute Digimon are near impossible to recover.
The ambush will be done by Rasenmon, she'll hold Snatchmon and throw it into a Canoweissmon that's powering up a Gran Nova, and then, a concentrated shot of the Atomic Blasters will be the finisher, so... Let's get on it!

I love that people are learning about the value of owning things but while buying or ripping something to mp3 is super easy, I do think physical media is the better option. I think this because I have had the double whammy of both my computer harddrive and my backup drive die at the same time. My backup drive was even less than a year old so I didn't initially have that much concern when, after I recovered my computer, I booted the backup to restore my backed up files and music and only thing it said was "khk khk whhhrrrrr khk khk". I thought popping that thing in the freezer would work. It usually does when the disk is just struggling to start spinning. But nope.
What I finally had to do was to take apart the casing and get the drive itself and put it in a dock and then Linux managed to see the data and get it bulk downloaded. And I have it. But it's all unnamed, anonymous files that I can only sort by filetype. It's still mostly like that bc it's a lot to sort through manually and it was definitely somehow too much for tag autofetching, that kept stuck on a loop of fetching tags for the exact same 1000 songs, over and over. So like, I have 1000 first songs, alphabetically. The rest is just a random mass of mp3, ogg, and flac files.
It is the world's luckiest thing I had not given in to the pressure to "clean and get rid of" my physical CDs so I was not left with 0 music. It is also probably why I now have such a hard time to let go of Spotify streaming and go back to files on a hard drive. It gives me anxiety to trust all that to something that can break so randomly.
Also, my solution to storage taking a lot of space was to just get rid of the jewel cases. I store the disks in a disk archive box and the sleeves in a folder. The cases I donated to the local library. They go through a lot of those bc customers break the cases all the time.
Also, some people do always bring up the data rot or CD rot and a lifespan of like 10-15 years or whatever. My oldest CDs are from like 1995 and still work. I haven't lost a single one to any kind of rot. My LPs are doing even better.

Hi! super quick question, is there a way to recover the data of an ssp ghost that randomly forgot, like, everything? home boi doesn't even know my name anymore and developed a few other issuies like not loading some options and not using any pronouns, like, at all. it's super confusing and made me really sad when i first opened it and they started off with one of the early stage lines. (which i was wayyyyy past.)
It sounds like your ghost's save data may have been corrupted/deleted. Unfortunately it's likely unrecoverable, unless you have a copy of it somewhere.
We're not quite sure why this happens sometimes; in normal use it usually doesn't, but if SSP crashes or something catastrophic happens during network updates, it can.
There is also the possibility that you are either running it out of a temporary folder (such as if you downloaded SSP as a .zip file and are running it out of that archive without extracting it), or you're running it out of a folder linked to some kind of cloud service (such as OneDrive or Google Drive) and those services are intervering with the save files.
It's hard to say more in this case without knowing what your exact situation was. If you're running SSP out of a temporary folder or have it stored in a folder linked to a cloud service, it is recommended to move it to a non-protected folder somewhere on your computer. Make sure that the folder name is plain alphanumeric characters as well; sometimes special characters in the file name can cause trouble with SSP and it will refuse to run, so in theory it's possible this could also have prevented ghosts from making their saves.
Either way, if you would like to make backups of your ghost's data in the future, here's what you can do:
If you're using a ghost that is written in AYA or YAYA, your save file is located in the ghost's folder, under ghost/master/
In YAYA ghosts, it'll be called yaya_variable.cfg. In AYA ghosts, it'll be called aya5_variable.cfg. (If you happen to be using a ghost written in a different programming language, you may need to do some digging to find out which file is the save file.)
While the ghost is closed, find the save file, and make a copy of it to a separate folder somewhere safe. That will effectively be a save state of your ghost at the time you copied the file. To restore that state, make sure the ghost is closed, then copy your backup back into the ghost's folder, making sure it's named appropriately.
It's really important to do this while the ghost is closed, since they always save upon closing, and you don't want them to overwrite the old file you just put in.
Hopefully that helps, if you're still having trouble or have more information to add, feel free to send us another ask! If it becomes a recurring problem, especially, then we might be able to help narrow it down.

masterpost
---
After the last hectic few weeks, things had finally died down a little bit again. Kelth had reached out to Kali to gauge interest about their idea for relics. It had seemed enthusiastic and had agreed to split the results fifty-fifty, so now they were paying extra attention on missions, to find more of the rocks to build up a first batch for it to pick up.
Missions which were sadly just paid contracts from various allied factions, and not to recover Ordis’ drives. After Vince, their resource stores and credit wallet had been painfully depleted - not that they were about to tell him that. He seemed to have enough on his mind already, which he did try to hide during their morning sit-downs with him to figure out his abilities, but it seemed that the pace at which he initially picked transference up didn’t extend to actually mastering it yet.
It helped that Vince had a lot to distract him, and Kelth along with him. His abilities seemed to be very maths-heavy, requiring a lot of split-second precision calculations, which he was doing almost subconsciously. When they asked him what all the numbers flying by in his head meant, he had sat down with them that evening for what had turned into a several-hours-long interdimensional maths masterclass, and to their surprise, it had actually made sense. Vince had seemed to enjoy teaching, and had complimented them on what he’d assumed to be a background in this field - which had confused them.
Did Kelth have a background in this? They didn’t know - they still didn’t remember much of anything from before they had woken up to Grineer soldiers stabbing a device into Sufford’s thigh, and beyond that only had the recurring nightmare of running down endless broken-down ship hallways. But - if they remembered this correctly - Ordis had felt familiar on that first horrible day. They’d known him before. They could ask him.
It was too bad that their life was a busy one now, with a spaceship, two warframes and their own human self to look after - so they only remembered it once Sufford and Vince were out. The two warframes had gone to a nearby relay’s shooting range for target practice, and Kelth had been left alone on board, and had decided to organise their brain on what resources they were missing with Ordis, when the idea came back to them.
“-we might have to find another Grineer base, then, see if they have- ohh, wait.”
“Hm? What is it?” Ordis asked when they took a little too long trying to formulate their thoughts.
“I had a question I’d wanted to ask you,” they started, stalling while trying to remember it, “it was something I thought of when- Oh!” There it was. “Do you remember anything from before all this? Before all the endless fighting? Because I don’t.”
Ordis’ table hologram flickered as he hummed. “Hmm. I can’t remember any specifics, no. The data I have on the Old War came from historical databanks. Ordis doesn’t even remember how he ended up on Earth on the day you awoke - I was brought back the same moment you were, it seems.”
“Oh,” Kelth said, a little disappointed. “I thought- I guess I’m just curious about what I did before all this. I can’t have been an operator forever, right? There’s got to be something from before. How did I even end up on Lua, for example?”
“Hmm… Oh, Ordis does have some files that weren’t authored by the Orokin in his database. But- I can’t fucking look at them- ahem, they are inaccessible to me. Maybe you created them? They might be a journal of some sort that you kept?”
Kelth blinked up at the hologram. It was weird that he had files he couldn’t access, so this might be a lead for his own glitch-related problems, on top of their own history. “Huh? I don’t remember ever keeping a journal, but that doesn’t mean much - can you send their location to my datapad?”
“Sent. Did you-”
“Got it,” they said, connecting to his local filesystem instead of the pad’s own. There were indeed some files in the folder he’d pointed them at with non-standard names - w1, w2, and so on. The file extension wasn’t like other text files, but looked familiar, too, though they couldn’t immediately place it. They opened the file called w1.
It contained text, but not to read - it was formatted weirdly but consistently, and a lot of it was symbol soup.
“Oh, this is program code,” they realised after a second of confused staring. And then looked back at the filenames. “Wait, is this old homework? There’s one per week.”
“Oh, that’s interesting,” Ordis said, sounding intrigued. “Can you make sense of the contents?”
Kelth scanned through the blocks of words and symbols, and - “I think so? I’d need to read them more thoroughly, but I think there’s- what were they called, comments? There’s lots of them in here, but I feel like I’m missing something. They’re not as easy to find as they should be?”
“Okay,” Ordis said. “Do you- wait, how are you looking at the files?”
“Uh-” Kelth said, confused, glancing up at Ordis’ hologram. “At the, uh. Datapad?”
“No, no- The program you’re using to look at them. What is it?”
“Oh, just the basic text editor?”
“Hm,” Ordis said. The screen of the datapad flickered between tabs rapidly for a moment. Then, an installation wizard appeared, and Ordis ran through the settings even faster. Finally, they were looking at a progress bar, filling up slowly with irregular intervals. “There, try opening the files in that program, once it’s done installing,” he said.
“Oh, sure, thanks- I’d forgotten those existed, what were they called?”
“Integrated development environments, or IDEs,” Ordis said. “Are your memories coming back?”
“It feels more like they’re being dragged back forcefully, but yes, very slowly, at least for this stuff,” Kelth said, feeling giddy. The progress bar filled up and the wizard closed itself. The icons of the code files had changed to the icon of the new IDE, so they opened them again with confidence.
And they did load into a much fancier text editor this time - with a dark background, several bars of options at the top and a file viewer on the side, and parts of the actual code in different colours. And suddenly, it clicked.
Kelth sucked in a breath as their eyes flew over the lines, identifying the relevant parts of comments and function and variables names and logic, putting the functionality together in their head-
“I take it the IDE is doing its job?” Ordis asked, amused, when they forgot to say anything again. They snorted.
“Yeah,” they said, “it’s all making a lot more sense now. I think I’ll just keep reading through this for now, actually, see if anything else comes back.”
“Do let me know if there’s something Ordis could help to figure out,” he said. “Or when you want to try actually running the code to see what it does.”
Kelth turned to his hologram, with a performance of puppy eyes they privately thought must’ve been their best one yet. The hologram shook as Ordis laughed.
A pointer in the form of a cracked blue cube appeared on their screen, pointing at a green triangle icon in one of the top bars of the IDE. “You can press this one to compile and run,” he said, before moving the cursor elsewhere. “And if you press this one-”
A while later, their head hurting just a little bit from all the newly-remembered information, they turned off the datapad and sat back with a great big sigh.
“That’s going to be a lot of work, but it’s interesting, and I think it can be useful,” they said, happy-tired.
“And you’ve done it once before already, or at least the start of it,” Ordis added. “And it can certainly be useful! You could write algorithms for things, I-O-Ordis can’t.”
“You can’t?” they repeated, confused. “Wait, yeah, you mentioned that - why do you not have access to your own files?”
“Ordis is afraid that- Ordis has no fucking clue- there’s a barrier of some kind, there.”
Kelth stared at the hologram - when Ordis glitched, it briefly jittered out of focus. They were quiet just a little too long, because he let out a bitter laugh.
“Maybe you could learn to fix that, and this glitch while you’re at it,” he said, tone self-deprecating, sounding like he had been aiming for joking but had missed completely.
“That sounds- not impossible, actually,” Kelth said, careful. “I can at least take a look, right?”
Ordis was quiet for a beat, before he tried to speak three thoughts at once. “I- Ordis hadn’t- that was just a joke, you don’t-”
“No, hey, once I get a bit better at this, I can absolutely take a look for you,” they said, now a little more firm, a little more concerned. Ordis might not feel like he was worth the effort, but he was to them.
He sighed deeply. “Ordis is- really not sure how he feels about the idea, especially while you’re already still working on the memory drives. Let’s just forget about this one for now?”
He intoned the last bit like a question. “Sure,” Kelth said, absolutely not intending to forget about it for any stretch of time. But before they could address it any more, he moved on.
The hologram flickered bright once, as Ordis made a sound like he’d just inhaled sharply. “In the meanwhile, for practice, I just had an idea,” he said, sounding excited and giddy. It felt a little like whiplash, but they were willing to roll with it.
“Yeah?” they asked, allowing themself to be affected by his enthusiasm, smiling again.
“Ordis has found an open-source repository of void fissure data,” he said, taking control of the datapad in their hands again to open a sleek-looking website. “Maybe you could do something with this? Combine it, process it in some way, and-”
“Predict the locations of future ones,” Kelth breathed, eyes wide. “Oh, that’s a fantastic idea - what format is the data in, could we use any of it?”
“It’s raw data with the location, timestamp and intensity, but from some preliminary analyses I ran on it, it looks pretty chaotic, and Ordis couldn’t immediately find a pattern in it.”
“Oh, you could try to ask Vince? He’s good with maths - you guys can try to find a pattern to it while I figure out how this whole code thing works again?” Kelth proposed.
“Oh, I had not considered- a fantastic idea!”
They were interrupted by the sound of the Liset docking again - had it already been so long? Time had flown by.
“Awesome, you can go get a start on that while I go see if Sufford’s up for another drive run?” they asked, already putting the datapad down on the table and grabbing for their cane to get up. “I need to look at something other than code for a few hours, give my eyes a rest.”
“Sure, I just- oh, he likes the idea,” Ordis said, as the doors to the lounge opened and Vince all but stormed in, clearly on his way to his room already, briefly startled by them and Ordis’ hologram just sitting there. He nodded towards them in greeting, but did not let this slow him down, and he was already down the hallway by the time Sufford even poked his head into the still-open door. Kelth snorted, thoroughly amused.
“Looks like you’ve got yourself a maths buddy now, Ordis,” they said, grinning wide, before waving at Sufford. “Hey Sufford, are you up to go shoot at some real moving targets?”
He jerked his head back a little as if to scoff, before tilting it and giving them an exaggerated thumbs-up. He then immediately disappeared back the way he’d come - presumably heading towards the arsenal, to pick up his skana. Kelth got up, then, taking a minute to stretch out their legs before they went to sit down for what was probably going to be another few hours.
Ordis’ hologram was still up, even though he was probably already distracted coming up with mathematical nonsense with Vince, so Kelth wished him good luck, and made their way towards the somatic link.
The whole ship at work, at once - it felt good, like they were all a team. And for all intents and purposes, Kelth was at the head of it - giving the orders if not also coming up with them in the first place.
Giddy, they lowered themself down into the seat, closing their eyes as the cover sank down over them, connecting to Sufford - he was already in the Liset, setting the nav console to go back to the planet where they’d last left off with the drives. On their signal, he started the flight.
The first batch of relics was handed over to Kali before any kind of fissure-finding algorithm was ready, so they simply didn’t mention it. Biting their tongue was hard, especially when Kali reported in only sporadically with when it had managed to find a fissure area and crack some of the relics open.
It only took a few days’ worth of downtime for them to get through all of their old homework files - there was disappointingly little of it on board - and go looking online for courses. But following a course was boring when they had the prospect of writing something actually useful, so they dropped that relatively quickly, in favour of messing around and trying to put together the framework for the fissure-finder instead.
And that did seem to work - while Ordis and Vince narrowed down the formula for the fissures’ appearances, Kelth cobbled together a functional finder algorithm. When they ran it on the available historical data, it worked. And when they’d handed it to Kali, to run in predictive mode, it still worked.
Compared to the week that the first batch had taken to crack, now Kali could do a dozen in a few hours. The Orokin trinkets that Kelth received from it sold for good money. Another worry off the list.
Since their skills had progressed to a passable level, Kelth tried bringing up the barrier between Ordis and the code of the ship again. He had however tried to nervously laugh it off, which Kelth had not entertained whatsoever - even though they ended up making a compromise: to only start looking into it after they’d found all of his drives. Which, fine, after another week they were starting to find less and less, with more and more gaps in the serials having gotten filled in, so they were getting close to finishing that, anyway - but still.
It was that moment that Ordis chose to inform them of the fact that not all the parts they’d received from Kali from the relic deal had made it to getting sold - they were disappearing.

not a commissioner BUT Google drive moves deleted items to the trash folder before fully deleting it AND keeps an automatic change log of all your files. If you check your drive trash folder, recover the form, and check the changelog... you might be able to recover it. I don't know what happens to survey data when a form is moved to the trash but it's probably worth checking.
Oh no. OH NO. This was PERMANENTLY deleted. :') Like. Perma perma ;;; It's gone and there's no way to retrieve it unfortunately.

Computer backups
Most of my career has been spent, one way or another, dealing with computer storage. Mostly this has been an accident, because I started out experimenting with some filesystem stuff a few decades ago, and it turns out I liked it.
I periodically make this offer:  I will offer advice about computer backups for free. This is not a light offer, as I have charged for this sort of stuff in my career. But not enough people do backups, and there are just *so many* ways to do it these days, and it’s not too expensive.
Mostly I focus on UNIX and MacOS, but some of the advice applies just as well to Windows; I just don’t know all of the details.
So let’s start off with some basics!
The most basic one is: why backup?  And that answer should be fairly obvious -- in case something bad happens, and you need your data again. The biggest bads here are losing the computer (either literally or via it breaking).  With a backup, you can minimize how much of your very important data you have lost.
A secondary reason for backups is because, with some of them, you can have a history.  eg., with macOS’ Time Machine, you can go look at different versions of a file over time, so if you accidentally deleted a bunch of text and can’t otherwise undo it, you can go look at an older version of the file and get it back.
Backups can come in two basic types:  complete (which I’ll refer to as “level zero” most commonly), and partial (aka “incremental”). A partial backup is where only the changes from a particular time are copied -- usually, the last backup. This can save a huge amount of storage space, which I think is obvious but may not be to some people.  Usually this will largely be invisible to you.
Then are are two other types to associate with backups: on-site (aka local) and offsite.  Local backups are just that -- they’re near you.  Most people have local backups by having an external disk attached to their computer, and either manually or automatically copying files.  (Both macOS and Windows can be set up to do this automatically; as I said, I’m not as sure about the Windows specifics, but I do know it can be done.)
A variant of this is to have a network disk of some sort -- what I’ll refer to as “NAS” (for Network Attached Storage, whereas DAS -- Direct Attached Storage -- is the USB kind).  In this case, you’ll have some sort of machine on your network, and the OS will access it over the network.  This is likely to be slow, especially if you’re using WiFi.
For off-site backups, there are again several options / flavours.  One easy way is to have multiple local backups, and simply take one of them to a friend’s house, an office, or a bank vault.  Physically transporting the backup is generally not something you can do automatically, but it’s fairly *easy*.  Once offsite, in this case, you can’t access or update it without retrieving it.
Another option for off-site backups, however, is to use a cloud app.  For example, backblaze.com offers cloud backup for something like US$60/year.  In this case, you install their application, and it periodically makes incremental backups up on their storage.  There are *lots* of programs for this, and one of the really nice things is that you can usually use more than one. (On one Mac, for example, I have both backblaze and an app called Arq, which I have configured to back up to Amazon’s S3 cloud storage.)
Lastly, to conclude the discussion of backup basics, you need to think about *recovery*.  Specifically, for any sort of backup method you choose, how do you get your data back if necessary?  macOS’ Time Machine is integrated into the operating system, so you can recover during installation the OS, when configuring a new machine, or at any time manually.  Backblaze, described above, lets you download a .zip archive of selected files/folders, or the entire thing.
That’s enough for now.

Maria R. Log #5 Surge the Tenrec
Tumblr media
Now this is a menace to society here. Surge the Tenrec is the latest addition to what Julian calls ‘Starline’s F*&k ups’, at least that’s what the folder is called. There isn’t a lot info about Surge or her partner in crime Kit, seems like Starline put his own encryption on the files that contained their data. From what Julian can figure from the late scientists notes it seems these two were test subjects of his, a failed attempt to make a duo like Sonic and Tails. Though calling them failures seems to be harsh, I can’t deny that they seem to encompass both Sonic and Tails’ worse traits.
For Surge she’s rude, violent, only seems to seek out what pleases her and thinks of no one besides herself and maybe Kit. She can certainly back up that brashness though and then some, with powerful lightning and booming thunder she can really mess someone up, it doesn’t help that she was easily able to take on Metal with the held of Kit and even go toe to toe with Sonic. It seems she even stole some untested Egg Tech that allows her to use Wisps to attack, kind of like a wispon though more painful for the creatures.
Right now her location is unknown, probably some old safe house that will help them recover from their last battle with Sonic. It’s strange though, while they don’t ally themselves with Sonic they aren’t with Julian and the empire either. They seem to simply live by their own rules, their own faction causing trouble. Hehe guess that makes them a menace three society then… too corny? Maybe I should stop reading Sonic’s earlier files before bed.
This is Maria Robotnik signing off!

Three signals your hard drive is failing and what to do
Tumblr media
After just three years, the average hard drive's failure probability skyrockets. When the drive is exposed to varying temperatures, humidity, or external shocks, it may occur sooner. In reality, the hard disc in your laptop starts to fail after three to five years, and SSDs are no different. Do you feel anxious yet?
In the best-case scenario, hard drives degrade gradually, giving you time to save your data and replace them before they completely fail. But how will you actually know if your hard drive is failing? Let's look at some tips:
1. Slow computer performance, frequent freezing, and Blue Screen of Death
One of the causes of this triple PC collapse is a failing hard disc, which is just one of a million possible causes. In Windows Safe Mode or after a fresh installation, these issues are almost probably the result of defective hardware, maybe a failing hard drive.
You can use a variety of diagnostic tools to rule out a hard disc problem, but you should start by reviewing the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on your system. You should be aware that although while Windows is continuously gathering this data in the background, it is notoriously bad at forecasting hard drive failure, and you can encounter a serious problem before an S.M.A.R.T. warning appears many business listings.
You'll need a third-party programme like CrystalDiskInfo to manually check the S.M.A.R.T. state of your drive. Select the disc to scan under Disk and make a note of the health of your disc.
After using additional diagnostic tools to rule out hardware problems, you should move to resetting or reinstalling your operating system. Windows 10 offers the option to save all of your files, but you should still create a backup just in case. For more information on backups, scroll down.
2. Corrupted Data
Numerous different ways might corrupted data manifest themselves? If you notice one of these signs consistently, your hard disc is likely slowly degrading:
File or folder names that are scrambled
When opening transferring, or saving files, unexpected errors may appear.
Documents that won't open
Data corruption in your files
Vanishing folders or files
When data is created or stored, corruption can occur. Your files could be being affected by a virus, but they could possibly just have corrupted sectors on your hard disc.
Hard drive sectors with bad data integrity are these locations. Bad sectors are automatically hidden by Windows, so you won't see them unless you experience data corruption problems. Bad sectors on a failing hard disc can build up quickly, increasing the frequency of these problems business listings.
You can recover data from damaged sectors and block them from being used again with the use of a Windows command tool called CHKDSK. To quickly scan:
1 - Press Windows + E to launch File Explorer, pick This PC, click the failed disc or partition, and then select Properties from the context menu.
2 - Click Check on the Tools tab of the Properties window. You can still select Scan drive to launch the application even if Windows says that "You don't need to scan this drive." You can decide whether to correct any faults it identified after it's finished.
A reboot is necessary after a longer, more complete CHKDSK scan. When you have a day and a night free to use your computer:
1 - Right-click Start and choose Command Prompt to launch an Administrator Command Prompt (Admin)
2 - To restore data and correct errors, issue the following command: chkdsk / r c: (for your C: drive).
3 - When prompted, respond with Y to perform CHKDSK after restarting your computer.
3. Unusual Noises
You're in trouble if your hard disc starts making odd noises. The head attempts to write data, fails, returns to its home place, and tries again, producing a recurrent noise known as the "click of death." When the hardware makes grinding or screaming noises, it is likely that the bearings or spindle motor are failing.
If you can still recover data from your hard disc at this stage, you're lucky.
My hard drive appears to be malfunctioning. How Do I Proceed?
Here's what you can do if you believe that a hard drive failure is approaching.
Step one - Back up your data
The greatest thing you can do is to always have backup copies of your data on a second drive and to be prepared to buy a replacement free business listings.
Two drives failing simultaneously are unlikely to occur. Natural calamities like fires or floods would be an exception. In these scenarios, we advise storing a copy of your most crucial information in a different physical location, such as your workplace, a relative, or a friend.
Another option is to utilise an online backup service like OneDrive or Google Drive. If you use Microsoft Office, you might want to consider switching to a Microsoft 365 subscription, which provides you the most recent version of Office plus 1TB of OneDrive storage, which may be sufficient to back up your entire computer to the cloud.
Step two - Replace the Drive
When you're prepared to replace your SSD or HDD, consult our advice on how to choose and install the appropriate drive.
Step three - Properly Get Rid of Your Old Drive
Remember to delete your old drive before you discard it to stop someone from recovering your data.
Please refrain from throwing away your failing drive in any way. Electronics have dangerous parts and precious metals that shouldn't be disposed of in a landfill.
Avoid letting your hard drive crash!
You should not rely on software or signals to determine whether your hard disc is failing. It is more likely to fail suddenly and without any sort of indication beforehand. You should rely on backups rather than attempting to forecast something that is even less predictable than the weather.

Gonna be honest, what I've been writing has taken a freezer-burn because it feels like I don't know what I'm doing, like I have to get rid of a character in order to focus on one, normally I wouldn't even think of that so I went and looked for an old project to reignite my confidence which was the continuation of my Metroid fanfic, I actually have 3 and a half chapters (out of a planned 5) but I made them tentative because I wanted to make a bounty mission and I can't decide what fits best without driving too much away from the story. I have the outline sitting here but it's just a matter of connecting it all.
I went and saw that it wasn't in its folder with Season 1, which, I probably keep my writing more organized than anything, different folders for different files, inspirations, notes, pictures within files of the selective series I work on and it wasn't there. I remember last year my data got lost but I could've sworn that I was still working on it even without my data and I recovered it later so I knew it had to be somewhere. I was so scared that it was lost, checking my email, checking Word (which had all the stuff I worked on after I lost my data and before I got it back) and went to bed mad because of it.
Then I remembered today...Google Drive. That's where it was! So, I'm getting back to work on it, I can already see that I was in my element with the language I'm lacking on my other project so this should prove fruitful and I hope I can finally finish it and get it out. I just don't want to be one of those people who starts fanfics only to not finish them. I, myself, have done it before but that's a story for another time. I've made posts saying that I'm still working on it, so here's that update if anybody is even listening. BH6 Future Reaction is in there too, I probably have 2 chapters of that about ready without proof but I want to wait for that until I finish this project that I keep mentioning.
