Do you Pretty Birds know why I love my sunglasses so dearly? Other than accentuating my features and adding a bit of flair to any look, they perfectly conceal all the micro-defects around my eyes.  The small but resistant dark circles (that sometimes even the best of concealers or foundation can’t hide.) disappear instantly behind summer shades, and while this may only be a superficial solution, it does give me some peace of mind, and maybe even a little glamour to boot.  

In some strange paradox, sunglasses (that I will continue to madly love because they are a fundamental piece to my signature look) may strategically cover this zone of the face, but they also part of the problem.  Glasses put a little pressure on the area of ​​the root of your nose, no matter how light the frame. Over time, this pressure causes a small slowing of the subcutaneous blood microcirculation, which causes dark circles. That’s why every time I look in the mirror, especially when I’m very tired, I cannot help but reflect on the fact that it’s really time to find THE SOLUTION – and a definite one.

So, a few days ago, I asked my dermatologist to help me find an efficient remedy to diminish dark circles and small expression lines. Obviously, I could not resist flooding him with questions – déformation professionelle – to which I had more or less all the answers I wanted (but sadly found the magic wand I hoped for in fact does not exist). So I am sharing these tips with you because I’m sure you, too, have on occasion looked in the mirror only to grimace at unpleasant dark spots under your beautiful eyes.

First Off: What Causes Dark Circles?

Greyish-blue coloring of the lower eyelid comes from the slowing of local microcirculation and accumulation of melanin. This genetic and vascular phenomenon especially affects those who have very thin and clear skin, or who have problems with anemia, and often it increases during periods of high stress. If you sleep badly, work too much or workout too much, don’t be surprised if your dark circles are accentuated. The good news is: there is a remedy.

How Can We Prevent Them?

Put aside whatever products comprise your normal facial skincare routine, because, as a rule, what works for the rest of your face does not work on your eyes. The reason is simple: the skin in the eye area is thinner than the rest of the face, and lacks the sebaceous glands that create natural protection. As a result, the eye area appears more arid, and is more prone to swelling and signs of small wrinkles (accentuated by our facial expressions throughout our lives). Eye creams are the important first step, together with a series of basic precautions, such as protecting your eyes from light and integrating a diet with detoxifying vitamins to improve blood circulation. Your eye’s biggest enemy is alcohol, so limit the best you can. There are also a few small tricks that you can try in order to maximize the benefits of your eye cream (and make the application even more enjoyable). They are:

Apply the cream in the right direction

Move from inside to outside, starting from the nose to the cheekbone and then pushing up until the eyebrows. Make sure to apply the product only after you have carefully removed any make up residue.

Massage the eye area during application

Morning and night, when you apply the cream, you can take advantage of nice massage that reactivates your circulation. Tap with your fingertips, from the inner corner of the eyes to the temples. Try a little “firming exercise”: eyes closed tight, count to ten, and tap as much as possible. The exercise should be repeated at least five times, before blotting the eyes with a cotton disk soaked in cold water and with a drop of essential rose oil to help decongest.

This depends on your needs, which is often mostly determined by your age. Phyto Paris Moisturizing Mask

If you have dry hair, you are going to want to get your hands on Phyto Paris Moisturizing Mask, $30 (150 ml). This mask contains Jojoba oil to strengthen hair fibre and provide hydration. I just apply the cream-like mask to the lower half of my hair after shampooing, then wait for 2-3 minutes before rinsing it off. This next product I was so excited to see in the box; the BioEffect EGF Serum worth £25.00. The 3ml sample size might seem small at first, but a little goes a long way. BioEffect products are some of the most luxurious & results-driven on the market & a firm favourite of mine after trying the range a couple of years ago. This serum contains a plant based replica of ‘EGF’ (a naurally occurring protein in humans). It works to rehydrate the skin, whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles.

Another firm favourite of mine inside this months box is the Bumble And Bumble Surf Spray! I’ve loved this product for years & am very happy to have this mini to pack in my gym bag.

  Yet another full sized product in the box comes from Korres. Their Natural Pure Greek Soap (I received the Chamomile scent) is worth £5.00​ & it actually sat in my bathroom right now. Forget dry, overly stripping soap bars – this one is nourishing & lightly fragranced.

Then finally we have the Filorga Lift Structure mini worth £9.10. Formulated with collagen & hyaluronic acid this cream instantly plumps the skin & gives long-lasting hydration.

Sun Care Finishing Touches

I’ve written quite a bit about sun care and SPF as part of my Holiday Heroes series, with this post looking at some of the finishing touches that can enhance the other products that fall under the sun care umbrella.  When I return from holiday, I’ll do an overview of all the products that actually got used whilst I was away.

I think hair can easily be neglected in the sun, but I try really hard to keep a close eye on mine, especially as it’s quite heavily bleached and I tend to favour cooler blonde tones which can easily get tainted by sunlight.  Aveda do some great sun care for hair, such as their Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, which is a waterproof hair protector that should help keep hair healthy and stop it drying out in the sun.  It’s £22.50 here – link. The Aveda Sun Care After-Sun Care Mask is the perfect product for when you feel your poor hair has suffered in the sun, as this will replace the moisture and get it back to its pre-sun condition.  It’s £25 here – link.  The Korres Red Vine Hair Sun Protection is a nourishing and hydrating spray that promises to protect hair from sun damage and is particularly kind to coloured hair.  It’s £10 here – link.

After sun is one of those products that never occurs to me to pack, yet I almost always find a need for it.  Consequently, I’ve made a point of including some in my luggage this year to make sure I have it to hand.  The Mary Kay Sun Care After-Sun Replenishing Gel is pretty much as it sounds; a lightweight gel that provides a soothing hydration in a gel format.  It’s £12 here – link. The Ultrasun Sun Protection After Sun is your run-of-the-mill aftersun with no bells and whistles, just lightly hydrating, soothing and calming, making it a great choice for all the family.  You can pick up a duo for £27 from QVC UK here – link.  The Filorga UV Bronze After Sun is a really interesting product, as it promises to boost your tan without the inclusion of self-tanner or DHA in the ingredients.  The formula is a combination of oils and hyaluronic acid, so it might just be a case of promoting skins optimum health so it has the best chance of developing a colour…who knows!? It’s an interesting product, and I shall give it a go on holiday.  It’s £25 here – link.

I’ve actually already tried the St Moriz Advanced Pro Tan Boosting Facial Serum and my advice would be to ease yourself in gently as this stuff is powerful! I went in with three drops the first time and I was extremely dark the next day (you mix the drops with your moisturiser) so start off with a single drop and see how you get on – having read some other reviews, it seems to be a case of finding your magic mix, then this product becomes a star, but I thought I’d include it as it’s a great way to get a glow going pre-holiday without having to make any major adjustments to your skincare routine.  Find it here – link – for £8.99.
