Transforming Chaos: Dialogue with Environmental Artist Alejandro Durán, environmental artist from Mexico.
"Washed Up" is his most famous art project
This interview aligns with the ‘Nature and Culture’ Program initiated by the Culture For Causes Network. Within this framework, an exhibition titled ‘Reconciliation with the Living’ was exhibited in Paris at UNESCO HQ, focusing on the theme of harmonizing humanity with itself and the natural world; the exhibition travelled to Florence and Lisbon as well.
Alejandro Durán (Mexico City, 1974) is a Mexican-American artist known for his work on the environment and the issue of plastic waste in the ocean. Durán is particularly famous for the Washed Up art project: he collects plastic waste from beaches and turns it into art installations. These visual artworks aim to raise public awareness of the problem of marine pollution and the growing amount of plastic in our oceans.
The works from Washed Up have been exhibited in several galleries and art spaces worldwide, helping to raise public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and the need to address the problem of plastic waste.
For his work, Durán earned an MA in Teaching from Tufts University and an MFA in poetry from the New School for Social Research, and, as an educator, the artist teaches photography and video courses. During his career, Durán has received several awards such as the Creative Capital Award 2019 and the Social Impact Award of Art With Me Tulum.
With your technique, you have found a balance between nature and pollution, how did the idea of denouncing the environmental emergency through art come about?
The concept for this project didn’t stem from preconceived notions; rather, it emerged as a direct response to witnessing the situation in Sian Ka’an firsthand. When I visited this stunning coastline in Mexico, I was not prepared for it to resemble a garbage dump.
Despite my initial disgust, I chose to create something meaningful from this material, portraying the extensive infiltration of synthetic plastic into the natural environment.
Before creating your work, do you carry out a preparation process before using the materials you find?
My preparation process for this project has involved familiarizing myself with the stretch of coastline between Tulum and Punta Allen and actively seeking magical locations for the installations created from the world’s plastic waste.
So, what are the production times for a work?
It’s challenging to determine the exact time it takes to make one of my installations. The physical construction of an installation may take a day or two, but the process of collecting the plastic material has spanned years.
Analyzing natural light to identify the optimal time of day and ideal weather conditions is another crucial step in the creation process. Post-production and printing contribute additional days to the overall timeline. At this point, I’ve lost track of the actual time required for a work to come to fruition.
This is all part of a process that demands significant dedication. While my perfectionism can sometimes feel burdensome, it also defines my creative process. Although it may consume time, the satisfaction of creating an image that I can gaze at endlessly makes it all worthwhile.
Speaking of COP28, global emergencies are increasingly urgent, do you think international politics is doing its best to find the right path towards sustainability?
It seems to me that the profit motive is one of the main motivations for political leaders and many of the attendees at COP gatherings. From my understanding, this year’s COP gathering had a record number of fossil fuel industry lobbyists.

Durante sua carreira, Durán recebeu diversos prêmios como o Creative Capital Award 2019 e o Social Impact Award of Art With Me Tulum.
Apesar do meu desgosto inicial, optei por criar algo significativo a partir deste material, retratando a extensa infiltração do plástico sintético no ambiente natural.

Pepe By Paolo Woods Port au Prince’s Fifth Avenue is a waterfront road, just off the harbor, where mountains of second hand clothes bake in the tropical sun. The market, Croix-des-Bossales, is where the slaves used to be sold. Now it is not strong men from Africa that the merchants receive, but containers loaded with skirts, pants and shirts from the US. These second-hand garments are called “Pèpè” and it is increasingly difficult to see a Haitian wearing something that has not been previously worn by an American. A t-shirt produced for Wal-Mart in the sweatshops of Port au Prince will be sported by a Texan and then returned to the sender, who, at last, will be able to wear it. This back and forth gives us a peek into the workings of the globalization of the textile industry. Some of the images have been taken by http://www.bendepp.com and other generous Pèpè hunters. Paolo Woods was born of Canadian and Dutch parentage. He grew up in Florence, Italy and has lived in Paris and Haiti. He is devoted to long-term projects that blend photography with text. He is the author of six books, including “Chinafrica” (with Serge Michel), which deals with the spectacular rise of the Chinese in Africa, “STATE” (with Arnaud Robert) on the uniqueness and universality of Haiti and “The Heavens” (with Gabriele Galimberti) that for the first time investigates tax havens photographically. His books have been published in eleven different countries and acclaimed as an exemplary melding of art and documentary photography. He is one of the founders of RIVERBOOM and deeply believes in collaborative projects. His work is regularly featured in major international publications. He has had solo exhibitions in more than a dozen countries and his pictures are in private and public collections. He has received a number of prizes, including two World Press Photo Awards. Currently he is working on his first film. ©📸 @paolowoods #Pepe #PaoloWoods #PepeHunters #PortauPrince #Loved&Posted #TheStreetIsWatching 🥳🔉 🍕🖕🏿 #Ⓚ #kittesencula 𝖉𝖗𝖆𝖌𝖔𝖕𝖚𝖇𝖑𝖎𝖘𝖍𝖊𝖗.𝖈𝖔𝖒 ᴋɪᴛᴛᴇsᴇɴᴄᴜʟᴀ.ᴄᴏᴍ https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwXTT_NT23/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Wild Ones: Diego Saldiva
Insta @kgoldtemporarygallery
Το έργο του έχει παρουσιαστεί στο Belfast Photo Festival, στο Visible White Photo Prize στη Φλωρεντία, στο PHOTOEspaña στη Μαδρίτη, στο Photo OFF στο Παρίσι, στο Nuit des Images στη Λωζάνη και στο Φεστιβάλ Organ Vida στο Ζάγκρεμπ.
BT: Ζεις και εργάζεσαι μεταξύ Βραζιλίας και Ελβετίας. Δύο αντιφατικά περιβάλλοντα που διαμορφώνουν έναν διαφορετικό τρόπο σκέψης και ζωής. Πώς θεωρείς ότι το περιβάλλον αυτό έχει επηρεάσει εσένα ως άτομο και κατά συνέπεια τη δουλειά σου;
ΒΤ: Από ένα πτυχίο στην Κοινωνική Επικοινωνία, αλλάζεις την πορεία σου, επιλέγοντας σπουδές στην Φωτογραφία. Ποιό ήταν το κίνητρό σου για αυτή την απόφαση;
ΒΤ: Μετά τα έργα “Break of Day” και “Momentos e Màculas”, δημιούργησες τη σειρά “Gigantes”. Παρά την μεγαλοπρέπεια του τίτλου, οι εικόνες σου αποκαλύπτουν ξεπεσμένους χαρακτήρες. Ποιό ήταν το έναυσμα για αυτή τη σειρά;
ΒΤ: Αποφάσισες να παρουσιάσεις αυτές τις εικόνες συνοδευόμενες από ένα απόσπασμα από τη Θεογονία του Ησίοδου, πατέρα της γνωμικής ποίησης. Οι “Γίγαντες” σου είναι εξίσου πηγή σύγχρονων γιγάντων;
ΒΤ: Θα ήθελα να επιστρέψω σε ένα από τα προηγούμενα έργα σου, το “Break of Day”. Είναι ο καρπός μιας πολύ δύσκολης κατάστασης που εσύ και η οικογένειά σου αναγκαστήκατε να αντιμετωπίσετε. Τι συνέβη;
ΒΤ: Ωστόσο, φωτογράφισες αυτό το επώδυνο ταξίδι ως ένα είδος λύτρωσης αυτού που συνέβαινε. Ο Λέοναρντ Κόεν τραγούδησε «Υπάρχει μια ρωγμή σε όλα, έτσι μπαίνει το φως». Παρά την κρίσιμη κατάσταση που περάσατε, σε έφερε αυτό το περιστατικό πιο κοντά στην οικογένειά και στον φωτογραφικό φακό σου, αφήνοντας το φως να μπει;
ΒΤ: Έχεις λάβει διάφορα βραβεία και τιμητικές διακρίσεις. Ποιο είναι το πιο σημαντικό για εσένα;
ΒΤ: Δεδομένου ότι το τρέχον πρότζεκτ πραγματοποιείται στο Instagram, που θεωρείται ως ένα νέο μέσο αυτο-έκφρασης, πώς θα περιέγραφες τη δική σου προσέγγιση στα κοινωνικά μέσα;
The Wild Ones: Diego Saldiva
January 28 - February 22, 2019
Insta @kgoldtemporarygallery
The exhibition “The Wild Ones” of K-Gold Temporary Gallery presents the work of six international photographers through the Instagram account of the platform (@kgoldtemporarygallery). The exhibition examines the quests, trends and experiments in contemporary photography, starting from diverse challenges brought by the age of the image.
In the second of six parts of the show, we present “Gigantes” by Brazilian photographer Diego Saldiva, a new series where veteran wrestlers struggle to regain their lost glory. Balancing between mythology and reality, his protagonists reflect critically on stereotypes of human society.
Diego Saldiva is a photographer living between Brazil and Switzerland. He studied Social Communication at ESPM in São Paulo and Photography at the School of Photography in Vevey. His work has been exhibited worldwide including the Belfast Photo Festival, Visible White Photo Prize in Florence, PHotoEspaña in Madrid, Photo OFF in Paris, Nuit des Images in Lausanne and Organ Vida Festival in Zagreb. Saldiva was the winner of the Prix Photoforum 2011, finalist of the vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis 2011 and was nominated for the Paul Huff Award 2012.
The exhibition accompanies a series of discussions between Vicky Tsirou and the photographers, which will shed light on their practices.
Interview of Diego Saldiva to Vicky Tsirou
VT: You live and work between Brazil and Switzerland. Two contradictory environments that form a different way of thinking and living. How do you think the environment you find yourself in has affected you as a person and your work as a consequence?
DS: I think my project “Momentos e Máculas” was a real reaction to this environmental change for me. I moved to Switzerland because of my wife and the first years were like the process described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (which happened to be Swiss) on her five stages of grief. I have a very spontaneous way of doing things which does not match very often with the way most things are done here by the Alps. It is a good opportunity for self-knowledge and be open to different experiences.
VT: From a BA in Social Communication you changed your route, choosing studies in photography. What was your motivation for this decision?
DS: I was working as a graphic designer at that time. After finishing my BA I thought my working life would be more creative, which was not the case. After a year, I had the opportunity to travel and my father gave me a photo camera as a gift.
VT: After your projects “Break of Day” and “Momentos e Màculas”, you created the “Gigantes” series. In spite of its grandiose title, your images claim to uncover impoverished characters. What was the starting point for this series?
DS: I was on holidays back home and a certain day I saw on the local newspaper that the "Gigantes do Ringue" (Giants of the Ring) would be presenting themselves in the peripheral area of my town, which is already in the outskirts. It surprised me, for they were very popular until the 90's and I remembered seeing them on TV. A cousin of mine was part of the crew at that time. So I thought it was interesting enough to have a look. I did not know what to expect. Their show did not last a long time, so I think the project is taking other forms now that they struggle to make new shows again.
VT: You decided to present these images accompanied by a quotation from Theogony by Hesiod, the father of gnomic verse. Are your “Gigantes” also a source of contemporary Giants?
DS: When I tried to edit my pictures, I had to find a red thread that would make sense. I wanted everything to be more than pure documentary, at least in my mind. So it took a while until I noticed their name and decided to research it further. That’s when I discovered that the myth was not far from reality. Roland Barthes opens his book “Mythologies” with a chapter on Wrestlers.
Wrestling is a staged spectacle acting out the public's basic concepts of Suffering, Defeat and above all, Justice. The wrestlers (as actors), in a immediate pantomime, portray grossly-exaggerated stereotypes of human weakness: the traitor, the conceited, the effeminate teddy-boy. The audience expects to watch them suffer and be punished for their own transgressions of wrestling's rules in a theatrical version of society's ideology of justice.
Roland Barthes writes “in the ring, and even in the depths of their voluntary ignominy, wrestlers remain gods because they are, for a few moments, the key which opens Nature, the pure gesture which separates Good from Evil, and unveils the form of a justice which is at last intelligible.”
VT: I would like to go back to one of your past project, the “Break of Day”. It is the fruit of a very difficult situation that you and your family were forced to face. What actually happened?
DS:  My son was born 3 months premature. After coming home he stopped breathing. I could reanimate him and had time to go to hospital. After some tests, they discovered his blood cells were too low. They kept him for weeks until they found out he had hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
VT: However, you were photographing this painful journey as a sort of redemption of what was happening. Leonard Cohen sang “There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in”. Despite the crucial situation you have been through, did this incident bring you closer to your family and to your lens, letting the light get in?
DS: I was in a strange country, surrounded by strangers when this happened. I was still in Photography School. There were so many mixed feelings, that photography (and the flash of course) seemed to be a way to deal with it. Regarding my family, I would say that I tried to be  “antifragile”, towards these events. Antifragility [term by Nassim Nicholas Taleb] is beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better. In other words, I believe that all those facts made us stronger somehow. That’s why we are still here.
VT: You have received various awards, honors and recognitions. Which one is the most important to you?
DS: They all have some kind of importance, mostly for showing that I underestimate myself.
VT: Since the current project takes place on Instagram, which is perceived as a new medium of self-expression, how would you describe your own approach to social media?
DS: I lack the discipline of posting my own work on regular basis.

The Corner, Mies van der Rohe Award 2022 Nominee,
10 Feb 2021
The Corner
Design: Atelier (s) Alfonso Femia
Location: Milan, Italy
The Corner by Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia selected for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022
Candidates for the 2022 Mies van der Rohe Award of the European Union for Contemporary Architecture have been announced: representing Italy, among the nominees, “The Corner” signed by Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia.
The official list, presented by the European Commission with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, for the 2022 award – named after the master of the Modern Movement – shows the best architectural projects in the old continent and includes 449 works from 41 countries. Among the 18 Italians selected, ‘The Corner’ by Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia appears in the Office Building category. Redevelopment project of the Generali Real Estate building located in Milan, on the corner of Viale della Liberazione and Viale Melchiorre Gioia.
The different facades act as a distinctive element strongly characterizing the entire structure, and the urban area in which it is located, an object of profound and radical change in recent years.
This is what architect Alfonso Femia, founder of the studio with offices in Milan, Paris, and Genoa, tells us about the project: “We meet a building in an urban area where everything has changed over time. A sentinel on the border between industrial settlements, infrastructures, and the beginning of the urban city, with an immediate, strong, almost alienating change of scale and perception. The city was the background, and the building the threshold to enter the metropolitan area of Milan from the northwest. At the limits of that threshold, a new, contemporary urban centrality was created and is in continuous development.
Today the building is almost at the center of that transformation, it remains consistent with it, and at the same time it stays faithful to its role as a “presence/preexistence”. It interacts with the changing surroundings and reaffirms its precise urban and architectural identity. The Corner derives its name from its founding design idea: the corner of a building tells the story of the city and speaks with a different voice for each facade. The Corner dialogues with the light of Milan, with its sky, with its compressed and expanded perspectives, with its new horizons”.
The nominated works for the Mies van der Rohe Award starting from 1988, constitute the most complete archive on contemporary architecture in Europe, unique for the accurate selection of projects, analyzed and chosen by a jury of architects, critics, journalists, and curators. John Mark Shares Some Of The Most Exquisite Locations For Your Italian Wedding
John Mark Shares Some Of The Most Exquisite Locations For Your Italian Wedding
The John Mark Studio is a multi-award-winning studio in the UK wedding industry. As such a desired name by brides and grooms from all over, the job does often entail travelling to some of the most exquisite wedding locations globally. Many of them based in the romantic setting of Italy.
Do you wish to elope to somewhere foreign and unique, to celebrate your love in a setting like none other? Then check out these magnificent settings which the trusted and reputable wedding videographer recommends.
Declare your love for each other at the most magnificent lake setting at Lake Como and the Villa Balbianello. It is a romantic setting amidst the most beautiful gardens giving it an elegant feel. The villa is only accessible by boat and offers all the privacy you need for a magical event.
Florence is a city known for art and architecture. It is a place where modern lines and rustic ancient architecture finds a balance and harmony, the perfect backdrop to the breath-taking photos of your celebration of life and love. It is no wonder that the Hotel Four Seasons is such a sought-after wedding destination. It is a setting surrounded by majestic trees contrasted against ancient craftsmanship of old walls, offering the perfect ambience for your wedding day.
In Tuscany, you can book the perfect location if a touch of medieval charm is what you desire. the Vincigliata Castle is set against rolling hills and has a magnificent balcony and the quaintest courtyard, the perfect setting for a medieval celebration of love.
The Amalfi Coast is a magical setting for the perfect fairy tale wedding. It is also home to the Villa Cimbrone, a villa where dreams come true. Dreams such as your eternal love joined for eternity on this magnificent coastline.
Tuscany is for many a dream destination. Now you can make it your ultimate wedding destination with a touch of baroque at the Villa Centinale. The 17th-century villa is home to many love stories throughout the centuries. Add some aged-old traditions to your love celebration.
It is hard to find any more romantic setting than Venice. Amidst the chaos of this unusual city, you’ll find the charming calm of the Belmont Hotel Cipriani an excellent combination of elegance and old-school charm as their team truly takes care to ensure that all your needs are met from the moment you enter through their doors. A destination rich in history, offering wonderful indulgence in only the most magnificent.
There are so many locations set in the wonderful charm of ancient architecture, romantic lakesides, rustic vineyards and the eclectic charm of remnants of a time gone by in Italy.
Something which John Mark highlights is when you opt for an Italian wedding is to send out your invitations earlier than usual, unless you are planning to elope. It is the polite thing to do to give your guests enough time to arrange their international travels to ensure all you want to be present can make it. It also helps you to gather the exact number of your guests and how many people you need to prepare for at your event.
It will take a lot of stress from your shoulders if you find a trusted and reputable wedding planner who is locally based to assist with arrangements of your perfect day abroad.
Whether it is an Italian wedding destination you desire or to say your vows in the local town church, it is completely up to you. Yet, make sure that you book the right wedding photographer to capture the special moments of the day. Someone whose portfolio presents what you like and desire, whose style fulfils the visual dreams you have about your special day.

[UTC+13:45] Germany - BARBARA LUBICH & ANNA TILL - PARALLEL SITUATION
>> INTERVIEW In “parallel situation” dance meets photography in real time. The stage production is a performative examination which poses questions regarding the creation of images and the relationship between beholder and subject. From reconstructing historical dance photography to live documentation on the streets, artists Barbara Lubich (photography) and Anna Till (dance) deal with the power of captured moments. “parallel situation” is an intense dialogue between a dancer and a photographer. The photographs are taken in the very moment of the performance and immediately projected on stage. Two larger-than-life screens are part of te set design and refer to the two standard dimensions often used in photography: one screen positioned upright, refering to “portait”, the other one horizontal, refering to “landscape”.  Both artists are present on stage and interact in a playful way with each other as well as with the objects on stage (various materials that are used in photography industry). Within this direct confrontation of the performed dance and the capturing of itself, Lubich and Till point to the the power of images and reveal the process of picture taking - questions about the possibilties of memory and perspective arise. In this way, “parallel situation” also opens up the view on how movement emerges and vanishes, so does remembrance. Sound and image are directly linked. In this way, “Parallel Situation” explores how the athmosphere of memories inscribes itself in images. The gaze of the photographer acts as the third performer and guides the audiences perception. What do you see - and what is invisible to the spectators? Text - written by authour Ulrike Feibig - opens up a new level of imagination: While the performers increasingly retreat from the audience’s view during the performance, the spectators are drawn into their own imaginative world.
// – // – // – // – //

illusion Research
Cole Fischman
Cole is an extremely underrated photo manipulation photographer. He is also a 20 year old self taught visual artist. His skills with photoshop and lightroom have really inspired me to create similari mages with his “style”.
Tumblr media
I really love Cole’s images as he uses a lot of orange and teal tones in his photos which is similar to my colour palette. His style is also very mordern compared to most other manipulation photographers. In the image below, i think it as an unsettiling vibe to it. The orange/red balloon adds a sort of “Penny-wiise” feeling to this image. I like this because it adds a sense of story for the viewer.
Tumblr media
Tommy Ingberg
Tommy Ingberg is a multi-award winning photographer and visual artist. He was born 1980 in Sweden. He works with photography and digital image editing to create minimalistic and self-reflecting surreal photo montages dealing with human nature, feelings and thoughts. His work is represented in collections all over the world, from the National Museum of Photography in Colombia and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. During the last eight years his work has won over 30 international awards.
Tumblr media
Tommy’s work has such an “old fashioned” style, almost like his photos were taken in early1900. His manipulation photography is really interesting and quite a mystery. His images also have a dark melancholic look. I like these images due to the simplicity that Tommy has created. I really like the composition in the image above, it is simple but still interesting. I also like the black and white contrast beause I think it puts a moody atmosphere into the image. The two images also creates an unsettiling tone or vibe. Overall I really like the style of Tommy’s work.
Tumblr media
Erik Johansson
Erik Johansson was born 1985. He is a photographer and visual artist from Sweden based in Prague, Czech Republic. His work can be described as surreal world created by combining different images. Erik works on both personal and commissioned projects with exhibitions and clients all around the world. within Erik’s photography the focus is on the story and the goal is to make it look as realistic as possible even if the scene itself contains impossible elements/events.
Tumblr media
An obvious choice for this research but his photography is remarkable. Johansson’s skill in creating illusion images is phenomenal, and his photoshop skills are exceptionally good. Erik is a photographer as much as a retoucher which allows him to create anything you can imagine. The reasoning to me liking Erik’s images is his creativity. Every imahes has a different “story” and Erik’s imagination turned into real images is amazing. In the background of the image above, the electric guitar almost blends within the image. I only noticed it was surreal when i looked at the image for longer than 10 seconds. The metal strings from the guitar contrast really well into the power lines, making it look like the guitar actually fits into the scene.
Tumblr media
Dariusz Klimczak
A polish photographer called Dariusz Klimczak composes dreamlike landscapes that show their surprise and weirdness. Dariusz Klimczak has been a professional photographer for 30 years, a few of which he spent creating photo manipulations. The artist prefers monochromatic (colours of a single hue.) images, where fantastic scenes look even more authentic and mystical at the same time when they’re black and white. The manipulations of the photographer's images open the door to his imaginative world where quirky characters bring a bleak desert to life. Everyday items contrast in odd compositions with animals or humans, conflicting with gravity and the other physical laws without which our common sense would collapse, Similar to Erik Johansson‘s work. His photos are surrealistic due to his artist montages. He says that the aim of his images is to use stories and universal symbols to move his viewers and force them to think or to simply crack a smile.

These images remind me of Tommy Ingberg’s style. They’re similar in a sense but still have their uniqueness. Dariusz’s images give off a very vintage look/mood. His work seems to inspire the atmosphere of the vast deserts in his photos, as do the stilt-walkers and other characters. These images seem to bend or break the laws of physics, but the fact that most of the images remain photo-realistic makes them all the more unsettling. I particularly liked the phone in the sand shot. The phones look like they represent “palm trees” dug into the sand. His work is really brilliant, unique, and innovative.

THe image above features surfers hatching from eggs, emphasising the coming out of the Sundek surf wear. i really like this image because it adds alot of mystery to the “characters” within the scene. i also like the moody look with the musty tones frmo the sand and mountain in the background. When looking at the second image the first thing that jumps out is the man breathing fire intothe big hot air balloon, due to the scale of it compared to everything else in the scene, he is shown to be at the foreground of the image, another thing that makes the subject stand out is the contrasting colours used like the dull, cold and moody background with the bright fire. I also believe that the cold and dull colours help to set a mood that contrasts the city below. I think that this image is showing excitement and fun.

Fu Wenjun's Digital Pictorial Photography
Website: www.fuwenjun.com
 Fu Wenjun’s creative output can be summed up by his term Digital Pictorial Photography, which he uses to redefine the traditions found at the core of the photographic arts. By demonstrating the complementary relationship of photographs and other modes of artistic practice, Fu Wenjun transforms what may seem to be an inaccessible message into a highly approachable concept that can trigger critical thought about history and humanity.
