My drawing of Vasilisa The Beautiful for the final day of Folktale Week! I made it just in time ✨ For “Found”, I decided to depict the scene where Vasilisa has just been gifted the boon of light by Baba Yaga for completing all of her tasks, and with burning skull-staff in hand, Vasilisa quickly and easily finds her way home through the dark forest. I decided to try my hand at a different sort of fairy tale/illustration style for this drawing, and it was fun, but also challenging. I’ve been asked many times over the years to draw Vasilisa, and I’m glad I finally got the chance to!

Folktale Week, day 2: Tree

The tradition of wassailing (or toasting) an apple tree is done in January to wake the tree and ask for a good crop of apples in the coming year. Last years cider is poured on the roots and stale toast tied to the branches.

This year I'll be getting back to my folky roots and participate for the first time of #folktaleweek2023 ✨🌷

The main idea is to bring you some of my favorite of Brazilian folklore, as I did you in this lovely fanart of a traditional clay sculpture of the Boi Bumbá.

Boi Bumbá, also known as "Bumba-meu-boi" or simply "Boi," is a popular folk festival celebrated in various regions of Brazil, particularly in the states of Amazonas and Pará. Friederike Hauffe, the Seeress of Prevorst and Dr. Justinus Kerner for Folktale Week on Instagram: Day Four: Sleep. ☄️ Mrs. Hauffe (1801-1829) was a German mystic and "sleep-waker" who could see the future, communicate with ghosts and spirits, see the time of people's deaths, and sense magnetic fields. She lived in the house of Dr. Justinus Kerner as a patient for an unknown chronic illness for three years while he wrote a book about her visions and attempted to scientifically study ghosts, clairvoyance, and the afterlife.

Folktale Week 2023 - Lost

This piece, like all the others, is a late submission, but for Lost, I decided to depict a part from the Polish fairy tale The Bear in the Forest Hut. Essentially, this maiden had just been abandoned to a dark and expansive forest thanks to her envious and cruel stepmother and her lazy and entitled stepsister, who twisted her father's arm into making her wander the world alone with just some bread. Little would she know that her fortune would turn around soon in this tale that is part Mother Hölle, part Beauty and the Beast.
