Planning a wedding was way more stressful than Changbin could’ve ever expected. It seemed so easy at first, like all that was needed was to fulfil a checklist and call it a day, but he realised very quickly that there was a reason for the concept of bride and groomzilla to have been created.
Changbin was a perfectionist to a fault, and so were you. This combination was a recipe for disaster… ‘You want those flowers? Are you serious? Do you even want to get married?’, ‘That tablecloth fabric is atrocious, I can’t believe you’d choose such a thing!’, ‘If there aren’t exactly eight flowers in each table arrangement we can’t even call this a wedding’…
It didn’t matter who said what, both you and Changbin had become absolutely insufferable beings. Not only to each other, but to the people around you as well. Which was why, by the nth month of you both planning your wedding, you’d very smartly agreed to create a proper system, name your must-haves and your absolutely-nots, and to fully hand over all duties to a wedding planner, your bridesmaids, and his groomsmen–who had also agreed it was the best choice for everyone’s sanity.
It’d been the best decision you both could’ve taken, since petty arguments over locations and flowers and tablecloths were most certainly taking a toll in your household’s dynamic.
Finally, after months, Changbin and you had returned to acting like your normal selves again, and he’d figured, what better way to celebrate this regained freedom than to take his beloved fiancé on an escapade to the mountains?
Changbin was a man of luxury, he was well aware of this. When it came to his loved ones, he spared nothing. So renting a cabin in the middle of the woods for five days and four nights was an insignificant expense when it meant he could spend all that time with you. A time where he wasn’t Changbin the engineer, nor the right hand of an Alpha wolf, nor the groom in a wedding that would soon take place…
It was a time solely reserved for him to be himself, for him to be your mate and fiancé, your future husband, and for you to be his future wife.
His wife…
Every time he thought about it, he felt giddy, he just had to admit it.
It was just a title, of course. He didn’t love you any less when you were ‘just’ his girlfriend, nor would he love you any differently when you’d legally become his wife, but he still liked the way it sounded. Not only that, but you liked the way it sounded.
Every time he called you his wife, he could just hear the way your heart rate spiked, he could see the big smile on your face…
But, oh, boy… When you called him your husband?
Changbin always felt like he was the luckiest man in the world, like he was ready to run a marathon or become the next Ninja Warrior.
You were mates, yes. You had mated long ago, and although he was very satisfied with this, the idea of being your husband did things to him. Maybe it was the fact that he spent a lot of his time surrounded by humans, but the prospect of being legally tied to you in their world made his heart swell in his chest.
When you’d arrived earlier than expected to the main lodge three days ago, you’d proudly told the receptionist that ‘My husband has made a reservation for one of your cabins. Do you know if it’s already available?’ he couldn’t keep the grin off his face, nor did he want to.
These three days had been absolutely amazing. You’d had the opportunity to go on runs through the woods together, to stuff yourselves full of delicious food, to have couple massages, and to huddle yourselves inside this cosy cabin to escape the outside world.
The fireplace radiated warmth, which was more than appreciated during these cold months. The gentle crackling produced by it was an immensely relaxing background noise. The fairy lights and many candles distributed throughout the cabin covered the inside of your little safe haven with the gentlest light, and, truly, this was probably the most relaxed Changbin had felt in months.
Especially now, when he could feel your nails digging on his forearms, when your delighted moans joined the sounds of your bodies colliding and the wood burning in the fireplace.
“B–Binnie, b–bunny, b–baby–”
Oh, you were already dropping the Three Bs on him, and that only made him want to rail you more.
Yes, Changbin was usually the more submissive one in the bedroom, that was no secret to either of you, but sometimes, the alpha in him just wanted to satisfy you, just like the omega in you wanted to be satisfied…
Was there a better way to do that than to have you in a mating press right there by the fireplace?
There just wasn’t.
“Hm?” He grasped at the soft faux-fur rug under you, trying to ground himself. If he focused too much on the vice-grip of your cunt, or the blissed-out expression on your face, he’d just come.
He was so fucking close… He’d been for a while now, but he was enjoying himself too much, he just needed to prolong this for as long as possible. It wasn’t like he couldn’t have you like this again later, on the contrary, he was sure he was going to, but he was horny and an idiot and you felt so good and the sound of the dainty ‘C’ charm on your anklet tinkling next to his ear was just so enticing…
“You’re so–Fuck…–you’re so good, b–baby…” Even if you were looking at him, your eyes had lost focus a long time ago. If he looked hard enough, he could’ve sworn your blown pupils had taken the shape of two cute little hearts. “I love you, love you…”
You repeated yourself over and over again, and Changbin couldn’t help but swear under his breath. He took your calves off of his shoulders and leaned into you so he could hold you close. With an arm under your neck and his forearm planted on the floor for stability, he resumed his steady pace. “Lo–love you, too… Love you, pup…”
Your quiet whimpers so close to his ear were bringing him to the edge at an alarming rate, and he was incapable of keeping his own moans in check with how aggressively his insides were burning up.
“Fuck, baby, I’m so, so, so fucking close…” He mumbled against your hair, speeding the movement of his hips and increasing the strength of his thrusts.
“Yes! Please, please come… Want–Binnie, I want your puppies so badly, please–!”
His brain fogged up immediately, and he started to feel dizzy. “Yeah? My wife wants to be full of my pups?”
“Fuck, yes!” You dug your nails on his buttocks, and the sting alone almost made him blow. “Please, please, my– my alpha, my husband–”
“Oh, shit–!”
An animalistic growl resonated throughout the small cabin when he came. The sound quickly turned into desperate moans as he kept fucking bucket-loads of his cum into your hole. He was too far gone, too overcome with pleasure and warmth.
He didn’t stop moving until your slick walls had milked every single drop he had to offer, and even then, he kept pumping himself into you, just to make sure…
Well, it wasn’t like you’d be getting pregnant, since your birth control had been very efficiently doing its job for months and months now, but his instincts didn’t care about that. All his inner wolf cared about was to try his best for it to stick.
It wasn’t until the mild sting of overstimulation started to settle in that he pulled his cock out, but swiftly replaced it with two of his fingers before he was moving down your body and attaching his lips to your puffy clit.
Oh, how heavenly it felt when he had you in his mouth… When you grasped at his hair and started gasping because of his tongue. His ears were still ringing, and he was still dizzy, but he needed to make you come, too. He was dying to feel you clamp around his fingers and hear you moan his name over and over again.
“O–oh, Changbin, fuck–!”
More.
He needed more.
Before he knew it, he was sucking and licking your clit like a starved man, fucking you with his fingers to stimulate that area within your walls that had your thighs trembling around his head and your grip on his hair tightening.
And, of course, you gave him more. Every moan, every sigh, every whimper was either a pet name, or a version of his name, or just a sound of pure pleasure and he was on absolute cloud nine.
“Bun–bunny, I’m coming–”
Changbin could barely perceive the sounds coming out of his throat. He’d been groaning and moaning against your folds since he’d settled camp here. But when your walls started fluttering deliciously around his fingers, you managed to pull another growl out of him, and your whole body just trembled in response.
He stopped lapping at your clit when you’d patted his head with a whine. Pulling out his fingers, he revelled in the creamy mix of your climaxes coating his digits. His eyes found yours before he brought them to his mouth and sucked them clean.
Your breath hitched in your throat, and you bit on your bottom lip as a smile started to spread across your face. Changbin loved to see that twinkle in your eye, to hear your body’s responses to him and his actions. They always made him feel proud of himself, and like you were the only person in this world for him.
He supposed you were.
Never had he romantically loved someone this much, and at this point, he didn’t want to love anyone else romantically like this ever again. For him, it was just you. Every day, he was reminded that he was ready to spend the rest of his life with you.
As soon as he noticed his cum starting to spill out of your cunt, he immediately started cleaning you up with his tongue. He made sure to collect as much as he could in his mouth before he pressed a final, tender kiss to your clit and made his way up your body again.
With a satisfied sigh and your fingers buried in his hair, you pulled him in, sealing your mouths in a sloppy, loving kiss that had his brain almost disintegrating in his skull.
Changbin let his weight fall on you, and you simply wrapped your limbs around his body and squeezed him tight.
As the kiss slowed down and turned to tender pecks, Changbin hummed, pleased. Not only because of the body-rocking orgasm he’d just had, but because he was just so incredibly in love with you.
When he pulled away and his eyes found yours, he couldn’t help but appreciate how the reflection of the fairy lights sparkled in your eyes. His cheeks heated up at the sight, and a small giggle escaped his mouth before he was pressing another brief kiss on your lips.
“Y’know”, you mumbled, burying your fingers in his hair when he shuffled a bit so he could lay his head on your chest. “Coming here was an excellent idea”.
“Mmm… Of course. It was my idea”, Changbin laughed when you pulled on his hair at his comment, and pressed a kiss to your chest right after.
“Duh, what would we do without your huge brain, Bin”.
He pulled himself away from your chest and planted both hands next to your head to look down at you. “I don’t appreciate the hints of sarcasm in that sentence, puppy”.
He was, of course, joking. The splitting smile on his face was a great indicator of that. The comment made you chuckle.
“Me? Being sarcastic about these things? Never”, a smile tugged at your lips, and you brought your hands to hold his waist. “But seriously, though. I couldn’t even recognise myself the last few months… It’s been awful”.
“It really has been. I couldn’t recognise myself, either. I’m really happy we can be here together. It’s like our pre-honeymoon!”
“Oh, my God, the honeymoon…” You sighed dreamily, squeezing his sides. “We’re really gonna be gone for two whole weeks…”
“Mm. Two whole weeks of you, me, and all those tourist traps we’re gonna visit”.
“All those tourist traps we’re gonna visit as husband and wife”, you giggled, wrapping your arms around his middle. “I can’t wait”.
“Me neither”, Changbin didn’t think he could smile any wider. The thought genuinely made him so, so happy, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to contain all these feelings within himself for long. “Anyway, how d’you feel about a warm bath?”
“That is another amazing idea for sure”, you chuckled, hanging onto Changbin with all of your limbs so he could stand up from the floor with you wrapped around him.
That warm bath was absolutely lovely. The way you caressed his hair and lovingly left trails of kisses on his face, arms, and shoulders had his heart swelling with adoration. Plus, getting to pamper you as well always left his inner wolf with a metaphorical wagging tail, so he stepped out of that bathroom feeling light, like he was walking on clouds.
With your bodies dry and fluffy robes over your frames, Changbin held onto you from behind as you both waddled back to the fireplace so you both could lay down again.
He tried his best to choose a clean spot before he dropped a cushion on the floor for him to lay his head on, and pulled you into his arms. On the very first night here, you’d both mutually decided that you didn’t care about paying the extra cleaning fees for this rug…
Changbin exhaled a satisfied sigh once you had buried your face in his neck and hugged him close.
You inhaled deeply, almost dreamily, and the tender kiss you left on his pulse point had a small smile appearing on his face.
“I really do love your scent…” You mumbled, letting your lips graze against his skin with every word. “I never thought I’d find so much comfort in an alpha’s scent. But yours is just so… ugh, I just looove it”.
Changbin could feel heat creep on his face, making him blush, and since words failed him, he just pressed a loud kiss on your forehead to show some appreciation for your words.
“I was thinking…” You mumbled after a while, cuddling closer to his side and draping a leg over his torso.
“Mm?”
“Y’know… About puppies…”
Changbin’s ears perked up, and his heart did a flip in his chest. “…Yeah?”
“D’you think Chris would have any problems if another couple in the pack had pups first?” You mumbled, tracing shapes with your index finger on his clothed chest.
What an interesting question… Would Chris have any problems with that?
He was The Alpha of their pack, their leader, and tradition dictated that the alpha must be the first one to reproduce and bring pups to the pack. However… Chris wasn’t particularly traditional.
Chris had never really enforced anything on their packmates other than a few barely existing rules here and there, not only that but he had a human mate–yes, yes, he hadn’t claimed his girlfriend yet, but there was no doubt in Changbin’s mind that his dear best friend was going to do it at some point anyway. As far as Changbin had seen, having a human mate meant that their relationship would definitely go at a much slower pace than it’d go between werewolves.
Knowing Chris, and knowing his girlfriend, he was sure there wouldn’t be pups from them coming anytime soon.
“Chris… I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t mind”, Changbin said after a while, caressing your hair. “I could be mistaken… To be honest, I’m not, but I could be, so it’s something you could always ask him if you’re curious… Why?”
You hummed in response, and remained silent for a bit. Your hand slipped into his robe, and the shapes you’d been tracing over the fluffy fabric were now leaving a fiery trace on the skin of his chest, right over his heart.
Puppies… Changbin had thought about puppies before. Years ago, he would’ve never imagined himself as a father. He was a wreck, he didn’t have the emotional maturity to care for a child in the way they needed. Back then, that was… Nowadays, though…
“Would you… would you like to try for puppies?”
Your voice startled him. It went through his eardrum and spread all over his body, reaching his heart to accelerate its pumping. Puppies… Your puppies…
Changbin pulled himself away from you a bit, enough so he could prop himself on his elbow and look you in the eyes. You were looking straight at him, but he could tell you were nervous about what you were asking, and he realised then that he’d been quiet for a bit too long.
“Yes”.
“Yes?” The shock in your voice almost made him laugh. Were you doubting it?
“Of fucking course, puppy. Have our own litter?” He was almost shaking with excitement at the thought. “It’s like a dream. Our puppies, you and I…”.
A bright smile made its way onto your face, and in no time, you had straddled his waist and started peppering kisses on his cheeks, making him giggle.
“Our puppies, you and I…” You repeated, just before you planted a loud, wet kiss on his lips. “It really does sound like a dream”.
Well, nowadays, Changbin believed he could be a parent, especially if it involved you.
It seemed like that honeymoon was not only gonna be spent as a husband and wife visiting tourist traps, but also mating like dogs until that dream became a reality. It was very clear that you were both absolutely looking forward to it.

Adventuring Health&Safety Considerations
Massive disclaimer: there are a million different things to take into consideration to keep yourself safe and healthy that are deeply personal and individual. These are basic things I find important and it is by no means an exhaustive list.
If you have worries or questions about keeping healthy on the trails, please consult a medical professional. Specific safety questions are best posed to Park Rangers or other such authorities.
∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆
Eating- balanced, tasty meals and snacks to keep you going! Food is fuel, food is fun, food is yummy, especially when your body is working hard.
Drinking- stay hydrated. No discussion. Carry enough, consider resupply places and water treatment options.
Equiptment- Adequately prepare for changeable weather, terrain and your needs. Take the right kit for where you're going. Know your equiptment, make sure it's in good shape. Your footwear is very very important. Keep it clean, dry and in one piece.
Dry out- dry out your kit. Keep your skin dry. Dry your hair. TAKE CLEAN AND DRY SOCKS. A change of the layers closest to your skin (at least) will go a long way to keeping you clean and comfy.
Cleanliness- mud is brilliant. Sand is great. Forest debris and leaf litter is excellent. But not on your person for extended amounts of time. That gets irritating. Literally. There's a reason it's called 'dirt' and your body will remind you forcefully of this unless you wipe or brush it off.
First aid- something we all probably have in common? Always covered in cuts and bruises. Keep them clean. Know basic treatments for common ailmemts. Prepare for the worst, hope for the good, enjoy the best. Supply with this in mind+extras.
Risk- small, acceptable and well-managed risks are great. Consider the things you do before you do them, including potential consequences to you AND OTHERS.
Animals- check the areas you visit. What lives here, what migrates here, what could eat or hurt you here? Prepare for meetings with your animal neighbours, you're in their neighbourhood after all.
Toilet needs- necessary consideration, I apologise. Where, how, with what, leave no trace. There are tutorials and guidelines out there.
Rest and Recuperation- take a break. Relax. Chill. Your body will thank you and be ready to go again soon. Look after your body and your body will try its best for you.
Fitness- match your fitness level to the things you're doing. Pushing too hard, too fast will hurt you. Don't do that. Slow and steady, building up in increments. You are the expert on your body and fitness looks different on everybody.
Medications- have what you need and take enough of it with you. Don't get caught short. If you find yourself on a mountain summit and need to take your meds, do it- no shame. Keep a list of the meds you take and their dosages on your person.
Communication- stay in contact. Ensure people know where you are, what you're doing and when you'll be back. Know who to call in an emergency or when you just need a bit of help. Keep your emergency contacts and information close to hand. Fully charged phone and emergency whistle. Consider phone service coverage in different places.
Navigation- know where you're headed. How to get there, how to leave, where to go for help, food, water. Note the direction and paths you're following and what landmarks you should encounter. Consider multiple means of navigation- online, offline, compass and paper. Consider what to do if you get lost.
Heed the signs and rules in the places you visit- no brainer. It doesn't need explaining. Also, stick to the paths.
Look after yourself, look out for others, go out there and explore!

Capstone Project
Capstone ProjectYou'll turn in your capstone project at the end of this program, but you'll want to begin working on it now. The project involves creating a complete litigation file, including a legal analysis brief, investigative report, client interview checklist, intake memo, complaint, legal research, and an interoffice memorandum of law. This project is worth 30% of your grade and will take a good amount of time to complete. For your capstone project, you'll apply what you learn in Chapters 7 through 12 of your Introduction to Paralegalism textbook, creating a complete litigation file for the Brown vs. Hammond case: Brown v. Hammond, 810 F. Supp 644, United States Eastern District, Pennsylvania 1993. Page 262 in your textbook. Your litigation file will include seven items: Legal analysis briefInvestigative reportClient interview checklistIntake memoComplaintLegal research, traditional and computer-aidedInteroffice memorandum of lawYou'll use the checklists, exhibits, terminology, and references from the textbook to prepare the required documents for your file. Your complete project is due at the end of this program. Because this is such a large project, you should put yourself on a schedule to finish each component after you've read the referenced textbook chapter. Contact your instructor if you have any questions or if you need any assistance. Legal Analysis Brief (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapter 7)A legal analysis brief is a summary of a case. The brief includes the essential parts of a court opinion, such as the facts, issues, holding, and reasoning. Complete a comprehensive and thumbnail brief. Refer to Exhibits 7.14 and Exhibit 7.15 and the Comprehensive Brief of People v. Bruni on pages 349-350) as a guide. Investigative Report, Fact Particularization (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapters 8 and 9)Fact particularization is a technique for generating a list of factual questions that will help you obtain a comprehensive picture of all available facts relevant to a legal issue. Your investigative report will be a fact particularization. Read the facts the Brown v. Hammond et al case (page 262), and particularize each fact using the categories of questions in Exhibit 8.5, page 373. Once you've completed the fact particularization, organize the information into a memorandum for the fictional law office (Stewart Law Office) with the following opening elements: To: Attorney StewartFrom: Your nameDate: The date the memorandum is preparedSubject: Investigative Report: Brown v. Hammond et al Client Interview Checklist (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapter 8)Create a list of at least 20 initial questions and 10 follow-up questions that you would ask Ms. Brown. Use at least one example of each kind of question explained in Exhibit 8.11, page 385-387. Label each question according to its type: open-ended, close-ended, or other. Intake memo (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapter 8)Prepare an intake memo for Brown v. Hammond. You need only create an intake memo for Ms. Brown, who has come to your fictional law office (Stewart Law Office) seeking representation. Addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information should be fictional. Use the layout described in your textbook on pages 368-369, and you may refer to Exhibit 8.3 on page 369 as a guide. Complaint (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapter 10)A complaint is the pleading filed by the plaintiff, which states a claim or cause of action against the defendant. Draft a complaint for wrongful termination against defendant Attorney Robert Hammond. Refer to Exhibit 10.6, page 469, as a guide. Hint: Use both your legal analysis brief and fact particularization to complete the complaint body. Legal Research: Traditional and Computer Aided (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapters 11 and 13)Use Westlaw computer-aided legal research to find and cite the following applicable authorities for the Brown v. Hammond case: three mandatory authorities discussed in the case, and three persuasive authorities relevant to the case. Using the Westlaw Key Cite feature, key cite the case (citation 810 F.Supp. 644). Are there any negative citing sources? If so, provide the case citations, and briefly discuss the basis for the negative citations. If you have access to traditional legal research sources via a law library or court library, you may use those, as well. Interoffice Memorandum of Law (Introduction to Paralegalism, Chapter 12)An interoffice memorandum objectively analyzes the law. This memorandum is written for the supervising attorney or other individuals in your law office. Prepare an Interoffice Memorandum of Law using all research you gathered. Geography in settings
Hi, I saw you answered a question earlier mixing real and fictional settings (not mine). Well, there is a lot of fiction that take liberties with geography. You mentioned “explicit reason for change”. Could you explain more? Also, what kind of checklist might you do when considering what’s bad geographic change. I have examples too. For example the geography in Independence Day (distances between various locations have been completely changed and they moved Area 51) or Sound of Music (the mountain escape is nowhere near Switzerland and actually even goes straight to one of Hitler’s homes). Yet, everyone I personally know who has watched those never shut them down for the bad geography, just found the truth hilarious and interesting. What, in your examples (sunrise in California and Gotham/Metropolis distance) make people complain? Of course, everyone responds differently and there are majorities and minorities. To be honest, I would have thought Sound of Music would be most atrocious because of the politics that go with the bad geography, but I’m surprised people aren’t. Thanks a lot for any more input on this.
__________________________________________________________
Synth:  I think the live-action films and TV shows are given a bit of a pass on questionable geography because it isn't always possible to film on location. Studios make do with what is available, which can lead to some weirdness.
Due South was set in Chicago but filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, because it was a Canadian show, but recognizing the landmarks as being definitely not Chicago doesn't make me hate the show. (There was one episode set in Toronto that they went and filmed in Chicago, because that's the sort of show it was.) Stargate SG-1 was set in Cheyenne Mountain/Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, and various not-Earth planets, but was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Knowing that <other planet's futuristic city> is really <university campus> doesn't make the show less enjoyable to watch.
The first time I watched Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, my dad wandered past during some of the Hoth scenes and remarked, "Hey, I used to go skiing there," because he did indeed used to go skiing around Finse, the town in Norway near which those scenes were filmed. To me those moments of recognition are more like Easter Eggs than immersion-breaking screw-ups.
Constablewrites:  I used the example of the sun rising over the ocean in California because the coast is on the western side of the landmass, meaning the sun sets over the ocean. It's not possible for the sun to rise in that view unless the earth starts spinning in the opposite direction, so it's not a thing you can just artistically fudge. It's also not an obscure fact that requires specialized knowledge, so anyone who's seen a map of the US and has a basic understanding of how that works is going to immediately know that it's wrong, and will then assume that the writer has absolutely no idea what they're talking about. That's where making changes can get you into trouble: when the natural assumption would be that you intended to be accurate and failed.
Synth:  "...you intended to be accurate and failed." ↑ This exactly. If it's obvious that you Did Not Do the Research (for things about which it is relatively easy to find information), that's when people are going to get annoyed.
Constablewrites:  Not everyone is going to spot every error, of course. I have lawyer friends who cannot watch any courtroom dramas because of how many liberties they take with reality, and that doesn't keep the shows from being popular. (It does mean that most of what the average person thinks they know about the legal system is wildly incorrect, but that's a separate topic.) I have a friend who ranted at some length about a fanfic she'd read which was ostensibly set in Kansas City that made it sound like it was some tiny town in the middle of nowhere rather than a fairly sprawly metro region. IIRC, the author mentioned that they were getting off at a particular junction because it was the last place to stop for a bathroom break for hours--that junction is in the heart of downtown, and at least half an hour from the edges of the suburbs in any direction. It jumped right out at her because she lived there, and it would probably sound off to anyone at all familiar with the area. (And of course, a cursory glance at Google Maps would show how wrong it was.) But if you didn't know anything about it, you might gloss over that and add that very incorrect depiction to your general impression of the city.
Basically, when you make those sorts of counterfactual changes, you're taking the risk that 1) someone will know that it's incorrect, and 2) that knowledge will disrupt their enjoyment of the story. You can usually mitigate point 2 if the story is otherwise well crafted and engaging. But push either point too far, and that's where you get dismissed as bad research, or just bad writing.

The Utility Patent Process
A utility patent is issued for the invention of a new and useful process, the machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or a new and useful improvement thereof. It generally permits its owner to exclude others from making, using or selling the invention for a period of up to twenty years from the date of patent application filing. Approximately 90% of the patent documents issued by the USPTO in recent years have been utility patents.
Below is a summary of the benefits of US Utility patent:
Protects the functional aspects of an invention.
Can provide broad patent protection making it difficult for a competing product to avoid patent infringement.
Capable of protecting many different variations of a product with a single utility patent.
We have tried to collate a list of questions with answers from the USPTO website that will help you in understanding the process to get a Utility Patent:
What should be my Application strategy? Provisional or Non-provisional application?
Provisional Application: A     provisional patent application allows you to simply file your invention without a formal patent claim, oath or declaration, or any information disclosure (prior art) statement. A provisional application is a quick and     inexpensive way for investors to establish a U.S. filing date for their     invention (priority date), so anyone conceiving the same invention later     will not be able to obtain a patent (as long as a full, non-provisional     patent application is filed within one year of filing the provisional     version). Filing a provisional patent application allows the inventor to refer to her or his invention, and mark the product ‘Patent Pending’.
Non-Provisional Application: The non-provisional application establishes the filing date of your patent application and begins the examination process. Your patent application will be examined by the USPTO only after the Non-provisional application is filed.
Should I use professional legal services or file myself?
Hiring a Patent Attorney or IP Firm: The preparation of an application for patent and the conducting of the proceedings in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to obtain the patent is an undertaking which requires good knowledge of patent laws, Office practice and procedures, as well as knowledge of the scientific or technical matters involved in the particular invention. Also, a comprehensive search needs to be performed to be sure that the invention is new and can be patented. Investors may get into considerable difficulty if they prepare their own applications and file them in the USPTO and conduct the proceedings themselves.
Inventors are not skilled in the art of searching prior-arts and hence might miss important references which might lead to loss of filing and examination fees and eventually abandon of their patent application. While a patent may be obtained in many cases by persons not skilled in this work, there would be no assurance that the patent obtained would adequately protect the particular invention.
Therefore, hiring a Patent Attorney for filing your patent and a Patent search firm for Patentability search may be the two most important and correct decisions of your patent’s life cycle.
I want to file myself (Pro Se):
If you do want to file your patent yourself, familiarize yourself with important patent laws, procedures of the patent office and study the domain of your invention in detail.
If you are an inventor or small business who has limited resources and needs help applying for a patent on an invention, you may be eligible to receive pro bono (“for free”) attorney representation through the Nationwide Pro Bono Program.
Make sure you have all the required documents listed in the Checklist for Filing a Nonprovisional Utility Patent Application with the USPTO.
How much is this going to cost me?
A patent application is subject to the payment of a basic fee and additional fees that include a search fee, an examination fee, and issue fee. Depending on your application, there may also be excess claims fees. Fees vary depending on the type of patent application that you submit. Get the Current Fee Schedule here.
How long will this take?
The time it will take until you receive your first letter from the USPTO in response to your application depends on the domain of the invention. You can estimate the time using the First Office Action Estimator.
Can I get my patent faster?
Consider expedited examination options. The USPTO has various programs and initiatives that are available to applicants during each phase of the application process. Each program is designed to advance the progress of a patent application and to provide applicant assistance. You can view a detailed Matrix of programs available Prior to Examination on USPTO’s website.
How do I prepare and submit my application?
There are several sets of requirements to prepare and submit a Patent application. See the Patent Application Guides for the detailed legal requirements for filing a Utility Patent Application.
Make sure to submit your initial application with all the required parts needed for obtaining a filing date and include the correct fee.
Can I submit my application online?
Use EFS-Web, the USPTO’s electronic filing system for patent applications, to submit Utility patent applications, Provisional applications and many other types of Office correspondence to the USPTO via the Internet.
To get an idea of what must be submitted to get a filing date and documents that are often included in a new application, see a Very basic tutorial on Filing a New Application online.
First time online filers may also contact the Patents     Electronic Business Center for assistance.
Before you sign the application, make sure that you read the written specification and claims. You will not be able to add anything new to your application once it has been filed with the USPTO.
What if my application is incomplete?
If your application is incomplete, you will be notified of the deficiencies by an official letter from the USPTO, known as an Office Action. You will be given a time period to complete the application filing (a surcharge may be required). If the omission is not corrected within a specified time period, the application will be returned or otherwise disposed of; the filing fee if submitted will be refunded less a handling fee as set forth in the fee schedule.
When and how will my application be examined?
Once your application has been accepted as complete, it will be assigned for examination.
Your examiner will review the contents of the application to determine if the application meets the requirements. If the examiner does not think your application meets the requirements, the examiner will explain the reason(s). You will have opportunities to make amendments or argue against the examiner’s objections. If you fail to respond to the examiner’s requisition, within the required time, your application will be abandoned.
What if my response to a Final Action does not overcome all of the examiner’s objections?
If your response to a Final Action does not overcome all of the examiner’s objections or if any of the claims have been twice rejected. You can consider filing an appeal with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
Can I get updates about my application?
Sign up to view your pending application and documents in Private PAIR. You can also sign up for the PAIR e-Office Action Program to receive an email notification when a new Office communication is available for viewing and download in PAIR.
When do I receive an approval?
If the examiner determines that your application is in satisfactory condition and meets the requirements, you will receive a Notice of Allowance. The notice of allowance will list the issue fee and may also include the publication fee that must be paid prior to the Patent being issued.
When do I get a Patent number for my invention?
Utility and reissue patents are issued within about four weeks after the issue fee and any required publication fee are received in the Office. A patent number and issue date will be assigned to an application and an Issue Notification will be mailed after the issue fee has been paid and processed by the USPTO.
How will I receive my patent with a ribbon and gold seal?
The patent grant is mailed on the issue date of the patent. It includes any references to prior patents, the inventor(s)’) names, specification, and claims (to name a few). It is bound in an attractive cover and includes a gold seal and red ribbon on the cover. You can also Order certified documents with the USPTO ribbon and seal as well as the signature of an authorized certifying officer.
We hope these FAQs will help you file and get a US Utility patent. Keep Innovating!

A Kindlebook For People of Various Backgrounds/Walks of LifeI admit that one of the reasons for my interest in this kindlebook that is titled Making The Most of Your Veterans Affairs (VA) Home Loan Benefits ; An Active Duty Service Member and Veterans Guide To Home Ownership by David E Nelson Jr.  is because of my intent to do what I legally can to be eligible to purchase a home with my husband by the year 2025 andor sooner that we both can reside in/live in for the rest of our current earth lifetimes. Fortunately both he and I have yet to use our VA loans and this kindlebook helped give some ideas on how the VA loan works in regards to particular home buying plans. This kindlebook is also good for a potential home buyers of various backgrounds, occupations,  and ages even if you have yet to be near a military base because various issues on home buying are addressed that could appeal to many people buying homes regardless of their background that include;  short sales and info on working with real estate agents/realtors in regards to checking how long they expect to work with you, why you want to doublecheck with ideally the same loan officer on certain matters even when working with multiple real estate agents in the way addressed in the kindlebook, the author’s explanation on why you want to ideally still at least google search for a realtor even when there is temptation to rely on online real estate listings, Veteran’s Affairs Home Loan Buyer’s checklist and more.  This kindlebook was well worth the purchase for me to better inform myself and share some of the details with my husband for both present and future reference.
Heartwarming
This kindlebook that is The Team; A Mother’s Wisdom From The Other Side Book 1 by Teddy and Frances Key and Oscar Senn as the illustrator has heartfelt information. Areas that are touched on include forgiveness, a person’s spiritual team, eureka moments that appear out of the blue and much more. I also came away with more insight with the way the writings on the power of thought and visualizations are much more powerful in a person than they may realize regardless of who they are, their level of self confidence etc. I feel blessed in both my personal and professional life with a loving and open minded husband who is understanding of my unconventional spiritual beliefs. However, I admit that the deaths of both my adoptive parents even though they occurred 15 years apart has me sometimes unintentionally wondering/thinking about how they are doing even though I have faith that both of them went to a world/worlds of whatever they consider their version of heaven. This kindlebook helps remind me that is more than normal and understandable to wonder about one’s late family members from time to time  (regardless of how long ago they passed)with the way the matriarch of the family is discussed in this kindlebook who passed away around the age of 86.
Multiple Chefs/Places ReferencedThis book that is Chef’s Night Out; From Four-Star Restaurants To Neighborhood Favorites; 100 Top Chefs Tell You Where (And How) To Enjoy America’s Best by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page has a mix of various types of restaurants that use to be open or are still open this year that include; El Bulli in Spain (mentioned on pages 18 to 19 online Wikipedia listed them open from 1964 to 2017), a chef who was referenced in connection with the Inn At Little Washington in Virginia (on page 41), a section of various restaurants affiliated with Los Angeles California that starts on page 112 that also reference Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles across multiple locations on page 113, pages 149 to 208 reference places and chefs pertaining to New York,  Washington DC Area restaurants and chefs are referenced from pages 279 to 293, and more.
I confess that I finally had the chance to catch up with watching the remaining episodes of Season 5 Last Ship this week. The finale of the Last Ship Season 5 did wrap up creatively and with much emotion and suspense. The ending especially the remaining 15 to 20 minutes definitely also took me by surprise in a wow way especially because it touches on spiritual/afterlife themes in a creative fiction way (I must leave it at that for those who still have yet to see season 5 of the Last Ship), I still stand by my sentiment that I hope that a movie is eventually released of the Last Ship with as much of the original actors actresses that can feature in the film as possible (I say as possible) only because I understand it would be too much of a stretch to feature all due to what occurred with a multiple number of the characters.  I definitely intend to order the complete Last Ship dvd set sometime this year and I am glad to have originally been introduced to the Last Ship tv series from an advertisement that I had seen in an Entertainment Weekly magazine issue sometime around June 2014. The following is my Last Ship Season 5 Review from September 19, 2018 a person could still be a novice to this show and enjoy The Last Ship. However I would still recommend at least watching Season 4 if possible time andor moneywise before viewing Season 5 to further understand the workings behind a multiple number of the actors and actresses who feature in Last Ship Season 5. I have to admit that I found it a very novel idea on how one of the characters on the villain side was written to have had a connection with Disney.
A Phenomenal Season Start
September 19, 2018
Already with the Last Ship Season 5 there are a multiple number of heartstring tugging and keep the viewer in suspenseful type of scenes that definitely have me looking forward to more episodes in this season. I am fortunate to have been introduced to the Last Ship television series back in June 2014 via an advertisement in Entertainment Weekly magazine. While still being considerate to those novices/new to the Last Ship tv series I feel compelled to share that multiple locations of military bases are featured even though the USS Nathan James is based in Norfolk Virginia. These listed locations obviously become essential andor vital in some way to being part of the puzzle piece of the season 5 Last Ship beginning 2 episodes. I do feel that it was definitely worth purchasing the whole season from my pocket yet I do wonder out of curiosity if more details can be featured why this season’s antagonist feels so strongly about America. As an American born woman who was adopted by 2 of my late adoptive parents who were also American even I understand some of the reasons why a person from other areas outside of the U.S. would be far from patriotic. I prefer to avoid harping further about culture out of respect for many people in my personal andor professional/career/employment life who I have interacted with that are from other countries outside of the U.S. However, I wonder and am curious if by episode 5 more is going to be revealed on why the main antagonist feels the way they do about America. Of course, the addition/feature of other actors/actresses for this season; Eric Dane, Adam Baldwin, Charles Parnell, Kevin Michael Martin, Bridget Regan, Jocko Sims, Bren Foster, Jodie Smith, Christina Elmore, Marissa Neitling, Travis Van Winkle, Ben Cho, Michael Dorsano, Maximiliano Hernandez, Fay Masterson, Adam Irigoyen, and more. Of course, I was a little surprised how the conclusion of each of the two episodes unfolded and I am eager to see the rest of the Last Ship season 5.
Abundance Profiles
I’m intuitively and logically aware how blessed I am in both my personal and working life and what also helps is that my husband is ultra supportive of my career, spiritual and money goals. I admit from a place of curiosity of striving to understand what creates an abundance mindset influenced my purchase of this kindlebook that is titled Instant Millionaires The Secret of Overnight Success by Max Gunther. The real life accounts in this kindlebook include; an advertising employee who hit a goldmine through candy, a family man who became rich through a boardgame, a  woman who unexpectedly came into great prosperity from using the outlet of her fiction writing as a hobby/something to do, a stock market millionaire, a cereal millionaire, a woman who became a millionaire through her dressmaking, and more. I am fortunate to have purchased this Akashic Who’s Who of Psychic Mediums Healers and More by Victoria Lynn Weston via Amazon on December 14 2014 and to have reviewed it on January 9 2015. I’m intuitively and logically aware that it is important to learn to use and consistently strengthen my own logical, intuitive and imaginative/creative faculties/talents and to be wise and reasonable on how often I consult in a psychic. I admit that the last time I got a psychic reading was in 2017 though I do intend to eventually have another reading again by the end of this year andor sooner. I feel fortunate to know about the existence of certain books to help me understand andor get an idea on how various psychics live and believe. I now realize that I am responsible for creating my reality both the challenging and pleasant parts of my life. However, even with me being logically and intuitively aware of how I may be perceived, the researcher and investigator in me wants to keep track of how I have wrote and thought from both the past and present in order for me to better understand my true and braver self for both present and future reference. Detailed Glossary of Multiple Psychics/Spiritual LightworkersJanuary 9, 2015I have to properly credit psychic elizabeth joyce for finding out about this book that is titled akashic who’s who of psychics, mediums, and healers by Victoria lynn Weston. This is because I was researching if the book psychic attack are you a victim by Elizabeth joyce was right for me. I felt a strong psychic impression when she referenced this book and now I understand why I felt intuitively guided to get Akashic who’s who of psychics, mediums, healers, and more by Victoria lynn Weston. The difference between a psychic and a medium (starts on page 113), each person is asked their take on what they see may happen in the year 2020 and any books that they recommend such as on pages 34-35 and 196-197. There are also some resources listed in the back of the book and information on the author (pages 331-337). The positive takeaway that I got from akashic whos who of psychics, mediums, and healers by Victoria lynn Weston is how it is important to consistently have faith and ask for heaven’s help in a more skilled way in channeling inner power that will grow and reinforce that belief that life is going to turn out for the brighter and more charmed (filled with the fruits of good luck/good fortune/good karma) regardless of what others may say and/or current external circumstances. Descendants movie review-fortunately I originally got the chance to review the first Descendants film on January 10 2016 sometime after watching the film and I noticed that I obviously reviewed over the first review sometime in 2017 or 2018
Perfect Film To Watch If You Enjoy the Ever After High or Cartoon Book Series
Original amazon review written on January 10 2016-archived from my stellacarrier googleplus blog via the stellacarrier googleplus online blog section of Stella Carrier online reviews and purchases for creative analysis Fantasy Movie Good For Either Those Who Simply Want to Just Watch the Film and/or Aspiring WritersJanuary 10 2016The Disney Descendants Movie centers around the characters who are torn between following what they want or following the legacy of their parents. I immediately recognized Kristin Chenoweth in the Descendants movie (due to being previously familiar with her work portraying a public relations specialist in 12 Men of Christmas). There are also other actresses and actors in this film that also contribute heavily to the film and the viewer gets introduced to both the parents as well as the kids that are grappling with whether to follow their parents. The kids also deal with themes of fitting in. Due to the fantasy genre slant, this Descendants film is also good for those who like the Ever After High cartoon series. Revised and edited review in either 2017 or 2018January 10 2016I admit that I got the idea to watch the first Disney Descendants film after unexpectedly catching the tail end of the Descendants 2 film less than 4 hours ago and deciding by one of the dragon scenes of this film to check out the first Descendants.Additionally, curiosity influenced me enough to watch it as both an aspiring writer for plot ideas on connecting this series to Ever After High and simply just to watch it as a fantasy type film with a happy ending. The Descendants film involves a plot where Ben (Mitchell Hope) successfully convinces his parents who are now queen and king of the land of Auradon Belle (Keegan Connor Tracy) and Beast (Dan Payne) to allow the following children into Auradon Prep School;Mal (Dove Cameron) daughter of Malificent (Kristin Chenoweth has featured in such films as 12 Men of Christmas, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure), Evie (Sofia Carson) daughter of the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy),Carlos (Cameron Boyce) son of Cruella de Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson), and Jay (Booboo Stewart) son of Jaffar (Maz Jobrani). Of course, there are multiple actors and actresses who also play crucial roles into the plot. From what I see, the Descendants film sends a healthy and positive (maybe even spiritual message) that it is possible for a person to create their own happy reality that is different from what may be expected of them depending on their parental andor family background. Obviously, this lesson could still be inclusive depending on whether what type of background a person came from. The children of the villains do adjust to life really well at Auradon Prep school and even enjoy themselves. This Descendants film is also good if you enjoy musical movies as there are song performances in the film. I may be in the minority saying this, yet I do feel that the writers of the Ever After High Series and the Descendants films could maybe get together and collaborate (as there are creative parallels in a beneficial way with some of the plot points while each of the series maintains its own originality). I also know for sure that I intend to eventually purchase both Disney Descendants films. Might Appeal To Some Ever After High Fans andor Animated TV Show FansThe animated cartoon tv series that is Descendants Wicked World has plot and cartoon elements that touch upon friendship, magic, and enjoying life. The messages and the unique plot elements and colorful sequences might interest some viewers of the Ever After High Series because that series also touches on themes of friendship and adventures in storybook type of worlds.
A Good Continuation From the First Descendants FilmThis film that is Descendants 2 definitely has a strong flow of continuation of events from the first Disney Descendants film. There is great contrast shown with the first Descendants film  where some of the characters that came from another place were treated better and shown a warmer welcome a sense of belonging compared to the first film. I would prefer to say to pay attention to the theme of a certain kind of book referenced in the second film as this is important to a significant part of the plot development. I admit that I had seen the first Descendants film in early 2016 by January 2016 and I am glad to have finally seen the second Descendants film because a multiple number of the actors and actresses gave much energy and animated emotion to their parts (on both the good guy and villain sides). This film is definitely worth a try to watch if you enjoyed the first film and you might like this film as a novice if you are an eclectic Disney movie viewer.

I admit that I unexpected spotted this magazine that is From The Food Critics of US Weekly; 100 Best Restaurants in America (listed for a recommendation to display until 3/1/19) from a CVS store less than 3 miles from where my husband and I currently live. Some of the following places/names referenced in this magazine; Restaurant Guy Savoy in Las Vegas Nevada (page 16), La Super Rica Taqueria in Santa Barbara California on page 17, Uchi in Austin Texas on page 27, The Inn at Little Washington and Maydan referenced on pages 45 to 46 for Washington DC,ABC Cocina in New York New York on page 52, Arethusa al Tavolo in Bantam Connecticut on page 53, Anthony Bourdain’s Top 20 starts on pages 68 to 69, a listing of the 150 under $25 The Best Cheap Eats in Your State on page 69, a section on 25 Recipes from Top Chefs pages 70 to 95, and more.

This 8 ounce Bath & Body Works brand of lotion that is Sweet Escape Strawberry Picnic (24 hour Ultra Shea Body Cream) has a good mix of the summery strawberry scent that is also very moisturizing to my skin.  I admit that I got this lotion from an annual Bath & Body works sale in Northern Virginia. Right Blend of Apple and Honey ScentsThis Bath & Body Works brand of 8 ounces Champagne Apple & Honey Lotion (24 hour Ultra Shea Body Cream) has a terrific blend of the fruity scent of the apple balancing the honey fragrance in a lotion that is soothing to my skin. I got this lotion from a Bath and Body Works location in Virginia that was having an annual sale on a number of their products.
Classic
This Bath & Body Works brand of  8 ounces lotion that is Japanese Cherry Blossom (24 hour Ultra Shea Body Cream) has a pleasant flowery scent. I am fortunate to have known about this fragrance since around 2006/2007 when my husband and I noticed the Bath & Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom lotion and body sprays being sold at a Bath & Body Works location in Florida where my husband and I lived at the time. Bought For
This one pound 4 ounce (20 ounces)bag of  double stuff oreos definitely has a fair mix of the classic chocolate cookie flavor paired with the smooth filling. The Nabisco Oreo brand has been one of my husband’s favorite cookies for a while, and I admit to my husband being a significant influence on why I purchased these cookies.

'Many' Park Co. homes could be legally unlivable
FAIRPLAY, Colo. -- Park County officials are facing stiff criticism, and litigation, in the wake of a Contact7 investigation in which they admit they don't even know how many homes in the county are legally unlivable in the eyes of the law.
The revelations come after a new homeowner discovered her home never received a certificate of occupancy when the sellers built the home around 2006.
"And she's like, 'What are you doing living in this house?'" Christina Mansfield said building officials told her earlier this year when she inquired about getting a building permit for small renovations. She and her husband bought the home in late 2017.
The home, situated at an elevation of roughly 11,000 feet, is the quintessential Colorado mountain dream home. But it's mired in unresolved legal problems that were never disclosed in its sale.
"This is terrible," Mansfield said.
Equally as alarming is that the county's failure to enforce longstanding code violations is common knowledge among people who've endured some of the same types of headaches Mansfield has.
"Absolutely," realtor John Angelico said in an interview with Contact7. He said Park County homeowners may not realize their homes have unresolved legal problems too until they try to sell.
"I mean, I think it's a mess," he said.
Angelico said he's developed a checklist for himself any time someone wants him to list their home. He'll visit Park County building officials to pull a property's records to see whether it has a certificate of occupancy or not. Sometimes they don't.
In Mansfield's case, the home only ever received a temporary certificate of occupancy because of numerous safety and code issues.
Mansfield discovered a box of paperwork in the garage that the sellers inadvertently left behind that contains all of the paperwork documenting the legal issues. Many of the documents appear to be originals.
With those documents, Mansfield and Contact7 discovered Park County failed to enforce its own safety and code concerns after it issued a temporary certificate of occupancy yet taxed the property as if it is a legal home.
"We shouldn't have had to have been put in this situation. This is terrible. And I don't want this to happen to anyone else," Mansfield said.
However, Park County building officials admit that it likely will happen to other people.
"I suspect there are many homes being occupied without COs -- or even TCOs in some instances," Sheila Cross, Park County's Director of Development Services, said in a letter to Contact7.  "Park County is vast.  It is not possible, or a good use of taxpayer funds, to assign resources to finding them."
Contact7 relayed the letter to Denver attorney Ian Hicks, who agreed to assist Mansfield after seeing Contact7's initial story in October. He incorporated the letter into a lawsuit he filed last week against Mansfield's realtor, the sellers, Park County, and Mansfield's lender for failing to do their due diligence in handling the real estate transaction.
"It's no wonder truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense,'" Hicks said in the complaint, quoting Mark Twain. "The circumstances giving rise to this civil action prove the fidelity of that statement."
He considers Park County's position "astonishing" because it "admits applying arbitrary and capricious standards in the exercise of one of their most critical safety functions."
On Mansfield's case specifically, he said, "The situation described is farcical and tragic. The collection of mistakes and outright recklessness required to make it into a reality were authored by each person involved in the transaction -- the sellers, [Mansfield's realtor], the title company, the mortgage lender, Park County, the home inspector, the appraiser and the listing agent for the sellers. Plaintiffs have zero fault..."
Hicks explained Mansfield's realtor was her "eyes and ears on the ground" in the sale because the realtor agreed to handle the entire transaction while Mansfield and her husband were still living in Michigan.
Among the specific problems with Mansfield's home, which Hicks described as a "money pit," are a driveway that's too steep and installed in the wrong direction without a permit, a "deck that utilizes the wrong-sized structural beams, causing it to sag like an overloaded diaper," and random pipes that "poke out of the walls for no rhyme or reason."
"It seems that they need to take charge," realtor Angelico said.  He's currently working with a seller, living in a different country, whose Park County home never received a certificate of occupancy in the early 1980s – unbeknownst to the seller until now. Angelico said the seller will have to hire structural engineers to ensure that the home could even qualify for one.
Mansfield's home has remained on the market for months despite Colorado homes selling quickly on the whole. She said prospective buyers have expressed interest but have backed out when she's disclosed the property's legal troubles.

Check Baby, Checklist
4 Lists to Aid Your Decision Making
We are a society of list-makers. We gather groups of to-dos and to-don’ts, would-bes and should-bes, and we slap them down on legal pads and post-it notes, fancy journal pages and stained napkins. But far too often those lists fail to translate to measurable success.
It doesn’t have to be this way. When making lists, a little strategy and intentionality can go a long way. It’s a discipline that far too many of us—especially those of us who the Wall Street Journal says are drowning in lists—are unaware of.
“ You can actually get better at making lists and those lists can help you become a better leader.
—ANDREA WILLIAMS
The truth is, you can actually get better at making lists and those lists can help you become a better leader. It starts with making the right lists. Here are 4 kinds of lists that can greatly aid the decisions you make for your business.
Checklists
As the broadest of all list categories, “checklists” can be populated with any data imaginable. Spencer Smith, a former VP of Sales at two Fortune 100 companies and recent founder of social media marketing firm Ampliphi, recommends a three-step checklist approach to stay on track:
Create a daily checklist that determines what success looks like. “Small business owners can work 24/7 since there’s no longer a definition of a proper work day,” he says. “Without checklists, small business owners have a very, very hard time of knowing when they’re on-the-clock and when they’re not. Create a realistic daily checklist, and once you’re done, you can allow yourself to leave work feeling great.”
Create a not-doing list: “It forces you to reconcile the best use of your time right now, and by knowing what you’re not doing, you’re telling yourself that the things you are doing are the most important and high-value items. A ‘not doing’ list also helps assuage that gnawing feeling of ‘what am I forgetting?'”
Use the first two checklists to create systems for other team members. “Think to yourself, ‘If I was a brand-new person working in my business, what would I need to do, step-by-step, to complete this task/project?’ These step-by-step systems will prevent employee/contractor issues in the future since they’ll know what’s expected of them,” Smith says.
Like Smith, Helena Escalante, founder of Entregurus, also uses checklists on a daily basis. They are especially important when she is engaging in a repetitive process.
“Anything that I have to repeat more than twice merits a checklist to ensure uniformity in the outcome and quality,” she explains. “The more familiar you are with any process, the more you tend to become complacent and leave it to memory, but that’s when you are more prone to making mistakes. Checklists are wonderful to avoid mistakes because there is no decision-making. You simply follow and check every step, and at the end you will have the result that you set out to achieve initially.”
Pros and cons
In the hierarchy of lists, pros and cons may be just below to-dos in both popularity and ease of use. Most of us have probably been using them all our lives—from making dinner plans to deciding who to play with at recess—even if they were never written down. These lists are just as valuable in the business world.
Lazhar Ichir, founder of the AI-powered content marketing platform Topicseed, says that lists of pros and cons are like “fictional partners” that lend necessary reason and data to his decision-making process.
“You need to be at peace with criticizing your own ‘genius ideas’ and tearing them apart after thinking them through,” Ichir says. “Having cons does not mean the initial thought is not worth pursuing. Instead, cons allow you to be prepared once you start working on whatever it is that you have in mind.”
While relatively straightforward in design, Nate Masterson, CEO of Maple Holistics, argues that the most effective pros and cons lists don’t just reflect the obvious positive and negative aspects of a project or decision. They should also reflect the values and future vision of the company.
“Longevity is probably the most important factor to consider when you face a decision—tough or otherwise,” says Masterson. “When you make your pros and cons list, every factor of the decision should be filtered through longevity and values; if represented this way you can only make the best possible decisions.”
Workflows
If the goal of most businesses is to be as efficient as possible—to work smarter, not harder—it stands to reason that those businesses should be tracking how their work is actually done.
“Mapping workflows are critical in finding choke points and areas of inefficiency,” says business consultant Aaron Pfeifer. “When I work with organizations to optimize their operations, I insist on sitting with a person from each position within a workflow to understand not just the overall process, but the minutiae that can derail a process.”
Members of a team generally have a verbal understanding of their related workflows, whether their role is to publish blog content or process retail orders. But, says Pfeifer, writing them down often uncovers inefficiencies that can significantly impact operations.
“Often, we’ll find out that people are using workarounds for a broken system, duplicating data input, or waiting on a single person to approve work before it can continue,” he says. “Any delay in workflows results not only in delayed billing, but it increases employee frustration, mistakes, and upset customers—risking future opportunities.”
Louisiana-based business consultant Connelly Hayward is also a staunch advocate for developing workflows, noting that they “open up and enhance big picture thinking.”
“It allows everyone to see everything and prepare for seasonality, specifically the busy season,” Hayward explains. “When things get busy, where are problems likely to happen? What will be the nature of those problems? What can we do now to prevent those problems? If we can’t prevent them, what can we do to be best prepared to solve them when they do happen?”
Hayward also offers guidance on how to develop worfklow lists, suggesting that starting from the beginning may not be the best strategy.
“My advice, pick something and work backwards and forwards from there,” he says. “The process is basic and straightforward: We are at X, what does having X create/cause? Once we are at X, what is the very next thing that happens? What had to have happened for X to happen? What is the very last event/task before we have X? Many clients are surprised to discover that what they thought was the beginning point actually wasn’t.”
Prioritized vendors
As the founder and CEO of IndustryStar Solutions, a supply chain services and software company that helps organizations launch new products, Williams Crane helps his customers develop lists of vendors who can provide various capabilities or materials. His company also develops an internal Tracked Suppliers list that rates vendors on their performance across several metrics (cost, quality, service, and delivery) and assigns each supplier a status of “preferred” or “no source.”
“It is important to develop a scoring system for your vendors that will allow you and your team to communicate ratings and rankings,” Crane explains. “For example, if an organization’s goal is to optimize buffer stock levels to reduce inventory costs, it should track suppliers with quality or delivery issues and long lead times to reduce the impact of delayed and missed shipments.”
Developing a list of prioritized vendors is a nuanced, multi-step process. For Crane, it’s also one that ensures his company is able to best meet its own needs and those of its clients. He says the list is always in flux—growing, shrinking, and otherwise evolving based on the most current information available.
“Established companies with [prioritized vendor] lists often find that continuous maintenance—removing under-performing suppliers and adding new ones—is a key enabler for maintaining their supply bases,” Crane says. “Modern cloud software tools enable professionals to automate the process of identifying and qualifying suppliers and free up time to focus on engaging suppliers.”
