I’m going to hell for saying this, but I think the reason H&M don’t publicly shill their kids is because they’re really not photogenic. Just based off of the pictures we have seen of them. They’ve already monetised the kids before (Netflix bath pictures, Archie’s H&M outift), but I can see them not doing so more simply because they just aren’t conventionally beautiful. How a kid looks shouldn’t matter, but I can see H&M being shallow enough to care - especially given how photogenically cute Charlotte was at that age.

Also, those kids are 1/4 black - they’re not biracial. The older they get and more clear that is, the more people will quickly get sick of H&M weaponising very serious and very real racial issues over kids that will never face the same discrimination as a black person.

When you look at everything we have seen of those kids we get photos from the side or out of focus. Heck, Lili's 1st birthday photo was heavily edited to make her look more Windsor and they gave her red hair.

It has to kill Meghan because when she sees the Wales kids.

George is starting to look like a Windsor more and more and he has those golden locks.

Charlotte is a carbon copy of William, aka Diana.

Louis is Catherine's mini-me.

I think there was a reason we never got infant photos of Lili. I believe, even though she is only 1/4 black, that when she was born her skin color was darker than Meghan would have preferred. Over time her skin lightened, as pigments tend to lighten or darken, but yeah...

Also, Archie's hair is brown. Not red.

I also think those kids look way more like Tom Markle, aka Meghan before the plastic surgery, than they do the Windsor's.

Meghan really wanted a Diana mini-me like Charlotte but she forgot to take into account that Harry looks way more like the Mountbatten side of his family and he has zero Spencer in him.

Chapter Summary - Spencer starts to doubt his reality and inadvertently hurts himself again. Can a visit from JJ help him see sense?

Chapter 10 - Welcome Oblivion

That night he laid in bed staring at the ceiling once more. 

Just got to think. Just got to piece this all together. Just gotta make sense of it all. 

But that was hard to do when his brain was so foggy. It felt like his head was filled with nothing but cotton wool. The combination of his meds and the withdrawals weren’t allowing his brain to work at even half the capacity it normally would. 

Just gotta focus. Just gotta figure this out. Something is going on. You’re being lied to, Reid. You’re being lied to by all the people you’re supposed to trust. Everyone’s turned against you. Can’t trust anyone. Can’t trust anyone. 

He started scratching at his bicep despite his lack of nails. 

Just gotta figure it out. You’re smart. You’re a goddamn genius for Christ sake. Just focus on the little pieces. Focus on the pieces and you’ll see the bigger picture. 

For lack of being able to scratch he started pinching his skin, harder and harder while he focused on one spot on the ceiling. 

It’s not real. None of this is real. It can’t be, can it? I’m not here, that’s the secret. I’m not even really here. 

He pinched himself harder, urging himself to wake up. Nothing happened. 

This is all in my head. All in my fucking head. I must be passed out somewhere, slowly dying. Brain bleeding. None of it is real. It can’t be real. 

He moved his hand from his bicep down to the dressing on his right arm. 

It’s all fake. Everything’s fake. I'm not here. I'm not here. It’s not real. 

His fingers made quick work of the bandage and he shifted his eyes from the ceiling to the wound on his arm. 

Not real. It’s not real. Gotta prove it. Gotta prove it.

He ran his fingertips over the stitches before settling on the one closest to his wrist. 

It’s not real so it won’t hurt. It’s not real. It’s all in my head. It can't be a coincidence that Maggie is so much like Tara. And if I squint Cedric kind of looks like Matt. Can’t be a coincidence. Can’t be. Just can’t be. 

With strength he didn’t know he possessed, he gripped the stitch between his fingers and he pulled. He was so far gone he didn’t notice the pain that spread up his arm as he yanked the stitch free from his skin. He also didn’t notice the blood that instantly started spilling from the wound. 

And if you think about it, Reid, that’s not all. Nick…Nick he’s like Morgan. He’s just like Morgan, only bigger. Delaney is a friendlier Hotch. 

He gripped another and didn’t hesitate in tugging that too.

And the nurse you attacked. Linda? Wasn’t she just Garcia? Yes, that was Garcia. 

Blood poured from the wound staining the sheets but he didn’t notice. Once the second stitch was free he worked on the third. 

Then there’s the old guy who works in the dining hall. Rossi. It’s just Rossi. And George…

The pain would have been consuming him if he wasn’t so hyper focused on his crazed thoughts. With the third stitch gone he moved onto the forth. 

George is Luke? Luke. Luke is my nurse? No, that’s not right. George has blue eyes. Luke has brown. Maybe he didn’t have blue eyes. Maybe they were brown? Maybe they were trying to trick me. Luke was wearing contacts? Yes. Has to be. Has to be Luke. 

Five stitches now laid on the blood soaked bed. 

And Taylor is just me. Younger me. Much younger me. Would have been me at twenty five. Would have been me if I hadn’t gotten clean back then. 

In a different timeline. Timelines have shifted. Nothing's right. Not supposed to be here. 

Would have been me if I hadn’t gotten clean after Tobias…

His eyes shot away from the wound and his itchy fingers stilled. 

“That’s it.” He mumbled to no one but himself. “It’s all in my fucking head. None of this ever happened. I’m…he’s me. Taylor is me. All these years have just been in my head. I'm still twenty five. I didn’t get clean after Tobis drugged me. Everything was in my head.” 

He started losing too much blood. His brain was lacking oxygen and his eyes started to flutter closed.

“No. No.” He mumbled. “Stay awake. Stay awake. Gotta get outta here. Gotta figure out how to get back to the right time. Gotta figure out…”

Everything faded to black and Spencer passed out in a pool of his own blood.

A soft breeze caressed the back of his neck and forced his eyes to open. His retinas were instantly flooded by sunlight, causing him to squint. 

Another breeze tickled the exposed skin and he heard the faint sound of leaves rustling. 

“You’re really over dramatic sometimes, you know that right?” 

The voice forced him to turn to his left where a figure stood less than a few feet away, staring straight forward. 

“What?” He croaked.

You nodded your head forward in the direction your eyes were trained. Spencer turned his head and followed your gaze. 

You both stood at the end of an empty grave, at least eight feet deep and a fresh headstone sat at the end. It was the engraving in the headstone he assumed you to be referring to. 

He rubbed his eyes with his palms making sure he was reading it correctly and when he looked back at it, it still read the same. 

Doctor Spencer Reid. 

Son and Friend. 

Agent. Convict. Addict.

Lost the battle with his own mind.

“Oh.” He turned back to you. 

“Pulling out your stitches? Smart move.” Your face was still out of focus as you looked at him. 

It wasn’t quite melted off this time but definitely fuzzy around the edges.You nodded towards his arm and once again he followed with his eyes. All of the stitches had now been removed from his arm leaving an open, bleeding wound. 

But if it hurt, he didn’t notice. 

“Why are you here?” He looked back at you. “You didn’t seem like you knew me.” 

“Maybe I don’t.” You shrugged, turning away from him and the grave. 

“Don’t do that. Don’t try to make me out to be crazier than I already feel.” 

“You’re losing it Spencer. You’re completely losing it.” You chuckled. 

“What are you even doing at the institute? You’re not a drug addict, you shouldn’t be here!” He looked back at you. 

“It’s such a waste of a brain, truly.” You turned back to face him, a wry smile on your blurry face. “Once so smart and now your brain is nothing more than a pile of mush.” 

“That’s not true. I’m struggling, sure, but my brain is still intact.” 

“Are you sure about that?” You laughed again, producing something from behind your back, seemingly out of thin air. 

You ran your hazy fingers over the spine of his journal with a cunning look in your eyes. 

“Where did you get that?” His jaw clenched in frustration. 

“I read it, you know. And this is the ramblings of a man on the brink.” Your smirk spread across your face until you were grinning like the Cheshire Cat. 

“I didn’t say you could read it. That’s an invasion of my privacy.” He stepped forward and reached to grab it from you but you held it out of his reach. 

“Have you looked at it recently? Have you really looked at it?” You opened the book to a particular page and turned it so he could see. 

What awaited him wasn’t his chicken scratch entries he recalled writing. The scribblings were complete nonsense, not even real words. It was utter gibberish. Nonsensical scrawlings laced with childlike doodles that he ascertained were supposed to be you. 

The only words that made any sense was your name written over and over again. 

“This isn’t what I wrote. This isn’t mine.” He shook his head, trying to snatch the journal from your hand but you were faster. 

You snapped it closed and quickly tossed it into the open grave. 

“Don’t be so sure.” You shrugged. 

“What did you do that for?” He spat, turning away and padding closer to the grave. 

He knelt next to it staring down at his discarded journal in the dirt at the bottom. 

“Spencer, the drugs have ruined your brain, baby. They should stick you in a padded cell, put you in a straight jacket. Throw away the key.” You crouched next to him, placing your hand on his shoulder. 

“No. No. I’m fine. I’m not crazy. I’m just…I’m struggling but I’ll be ok.” He shook his head. 

“You’re too far gone.” 

“I’m not! I’m not!” He yelled. “I’m FINE!” 

“There’s no coming back from this Spencer. You and I both know it. You’re too far gone. Too far gone.” Your voice started to wither but your hand grasped heavily around his shoulder.

And then you shoved him, sending him tumbling forward and down to the bottom of the grave with a loud thud. 

“Ow!” He groaned, laying in the mud next to his journal. “What did you do that for?”

Your fuzzy face appeared over the side. 

“It’s your grave.” You shrugged, your image starting to fade in front of his eyes. 

“Please don’t go. You can’t leave me here!” He propped himself up on his elbows. 

“It’s too late. Your memories are already gone.” 

And that was the final thing you said before you vanished entirely, leaving Spencer laying in a grave of his own creation.

The first thing he became aware of was the pain coursing through his right arm. He groaned at the sensation before he even opened his eyes.

The stitches. The blood. 

It was real. 

“Fuck.” He mumbled, trying to force his tired eyes to open. 

“Doctor Reid? Doctor Reid, can you hear me?” The voice was familiar. Spencer wasn’t sure why. 

“Hmm.” 

“Can you open your eyes?” 

“Hmm.” He squeezed them shut tighter for a brief moment before obliging and opening his eyes. 

Light flooded his retinas in an instant and he scowled. 

“Where the fuck am I now?” 

“The hospital wing.” 

He rolled his head on the pillow towards the voice to see Doctor Sanderson stood at his bedside. 

“It wasn’t deliberate.” Spencer knew he would be asked. Better to get it out of the way. “I wasn’t trying to hurt myself even though I know I’m not exactly trustworthy.” 

“Why did you pick five stitches out of your arm then?” 

“Maybe it’s better if I say it was deliberate actually.” He groaned again as the pain shot through him. “The truth is probably worse.” 

“I need the truth, Doctor Reid. Please?” Sanderson was much more soft spoken than Delaney and Spencer actually liked him a lot more. 

But surely if he told the doctor his suspicions he would be committed, straight jackets, a padded cell and all. If he told Doctor Sanderson that he’d picked out his stitches because he was convinced they weren’t real, that he was positive he was somehow in a different timeline in a parallel universe, they’d never let him see the light of day again. 

“The truth is,” he closed his eyes again. “I wanted to die. I was hoping I would lose enough blood that my organs would fail and my heart would shut down.” He lied. 

But Spencer was such a convincing liar, Sanderson believed him. 

“This is the third time you’ve hurt yourself since you’ve been here.” 

“Yes.” Spencer opened his eyes again. “Because, as I keep telling people, I want to die. I don’t know why you people won’t just let me die.” 

“If you really want to leave Doctor Reid, be my guest.” Sanderson shrugged. “I am not going to force you to get help if you don’t want it. We have plenty of patients here that do want our help so if you’re going to waste our time then leave.” 

“Seriously?” Spencer perked up a little. 

“Seriously.” Sanderson scoffed. “I’m not spending my precious time on someone who simply doesn’t care to get better.”

“Ok.” Spencer shuffled in the bed, ignoring the pain in his arm. “When can I leave?”

“You’ll have to have an exit appointment with your therapist. And then we can discharge you into the care of your emergency contact.” 

“Emily?” Fuck. “She won’t…she’s not going to let me leave.” 

“We can’t discharge you unless it’s in the care of someone else. I will call her and explain that we simply can’t accommodate you. I’ll have Maggie come by later to conduct her exit appointment.” Sanderson turned and headed towards the door. 

Spencer felt his chest constricting.

He’d wanted nothing more than to get out of this place since he’d arrived but now the prospect of actually leaving scared the shit out of him. He needed to collect his thoughts, needed to work out what the fuck was going on. He needed to talk to Emily. 

Emily would have the answers he was sure of it. He needed to speak to her and get her to tell him everything. He couldn’t even begin to think about getting better until he had all the facts. He needed every piece of information at his disposal. 

And he had a very good feeling that it started and ended with you.

He couldn’t sleep due to the pain in his arm so he spent the entire day trying to collect his thoughts but he got nowhere. He kept bouncing around in circles, his brain still too hazy to form a coherent trail of thoughts. He laid there for hours with nothing but his rampant and confusing musings. 

When the door opened he didn’t even bother to look over. 

“I’m disappointed, Doctor Reid.” Maggie spoke as she headed inside his hospital room. “You want to check out even though we were making progress?” 

“Does this look like progress to you?” He looked over at her, pointing at his newly bandaged arm. 

“Why don’t you tell me why you did it?” She sat down in the chair. 

“Isn’t it obvious? I don’t know how many times I have to tell you people, I want to be left alone to die.” Spencer rolled his eyes. 

“That was a lie.” She spoke simply. 

“It most certainly was not.” 

“I’ve been a therapist for a really long time. I know when someone is lying, Spencer. Every other time you’ve said you wanted to die, I believed you. This time you’re lying. So why don’t you tell me what’s really going on.” She fixed him a look that told Spencer she could see right through him. 

Tara had given him that look so many times before. And it always made him spill his guts to her. 

“I’m losing my fucking mind.” He confessed. “I don’t know what’s real and what’s not. A part of me thinks I’m trapped in some kind of parallel universe, like the timeline of my life has shifted somehow. And I know that sounds crazy and I know logically that that isn’t possible. I’m losing my fucking mind one piece at a time and I’m scared shitless.” 

“So the picking of your stitches was…?”

“I didn’t think they were real. I had to be sure.” God he sounded absolutely insane. 

Maggie’s expression didn’t change though. She just sat forward in the chair.

“Why do you think you’re in a parallel universe, Spencer? There must be a reason.” 

“Because nothing makes sense. I can’t make sense of anything. There’s this kid here who is me at twenty five. I swear to fucking god he doesn’t just look and act like me, he is me. My whole team is here, working here. I think everything since I was twenty five has been some kind of crazy fucking fever dream. 

And I know that makes me sound deranged. I know that’s not at all possible. But nothing makes sense to me anymore. It’s the only explanation I can come up with.” He sighed sadly. 

He wasn’t ready to tell Maggie about you being here, mostly because he thought he’d probably imagined it. Just like he imagined so many other things. 

“I think we might need to up your Zoloft dosage.” She spoke calmly but assuredly, seemingly completely unphased by his inane ramblings. 

“Because I’m insane.” Spencer huffed. 

“No, not because you’re insane, because you’re paranoid.” Maggie countered. “I really do think it will be beneficial if you stay under our care. I’ll be frank with you Spencer, I’m scared of what might happen to you if you leave.” 

“Truthfully, so am I.” He chewed on his lip. “I need to speak to Emily Prentiss. She’s the only one that can make sense of this for me. I need you to get her here. If you can do that, then I’ll stay.” 

“Ok.” Maggie agreed. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“Can I go back to my room? I hate it here.” Spencer grumbled. “I mean I hate my room too but I hate it slightly less than this room.” 

“I’ll speak to Doctor Sanderson. I don’t see any reason why not though.” Maggie smiled softly at him and stood from the chair. 

Spencer hoped this was a light at the end of the tunnel. He hoped if he could speak to Emily then he could make sense of everything and start focusing on healing. But Spencer was worried that he’d already figure it out. He hoped he was wrong but it wasn’t often that he was. 

Spencer had started to formulate a new theory and his biggest fear was that it was right. And he was certain Emily was only going to confirm what he already knew. Spencer was terrified that his new hypothesis about you and his memories of you was correct. 

But if it was, Spencer didn’t know how he was going to cope with that.

He was informed later that night as Maggie helped him back to his room that Emily and the team were away in California on a case. Emily promised to visit as soon as she was back. Until then, Spencer was expected to carry on his normal routine. 

He hung the drawings from Henry and Michael up on his walls which went some way towards cheering himself up. He went to his therapies. He took his meds. He talked to Taylor in the dining hall and did his PT. He dealt with his withdrawals as and when they hit. 

He wrote in his journal. He wrote in his journal after ripping out and throwing away the pages of nonsense you’d shown him in his dream which had turned out to be real excerpts from his journal. Some pages were legible. But others had showcased his mind for what it truly was and he didn’t need a constant reminder of that. 

He started taking an arts and craft class in his free time to try and keep himself occupied. But his head was always elsewhere. 

On the next visitation he hurried down to the courtyard as fast as his crutches would carry him. The anticipation of finding out the truth, of finally understanding what the fuck was going on swelled in his body. 

But when he found his guest waiting for him by the water fountain and it wasn’t the raven haired Emily Prentiss, Spencer nearly lost it entirely. 

“What are you doing here?” He spat more angrily than he really meant to. 

Understandably, JJ pouted a little sadly at his tone. 

“Good to see you too, Spence.” She refrained from hugging him, his back was clearly up. 

“I need to see Emily.” He didn’t try to disguise his annoyance. 

“She’s got piles of paperwork and she couldn’t make it.” JJ shrunk in on herself. 

She’d thought Spencer would be happy to see her. She was his best friend wasn’t she? 

“I need to see Emily.” He repeated. 

“I understand but could you not just be happy I’m here?” 

Spencer was beyond frustrated. The only person he wanted to see right now was Emily. She was the only one who would have answers for him. He couldn’t even muster the energy to pretend he was happy to see JJ. He clenched and unclenched his hands around the crutches. 

“You should go. I’m not in the mood for visitors.” 

“Spence,” she frowned sadly. 

She’d been chomping at the bit to see her friend since his hospitalisation. She knew she wouldn’t believe he was ok unless she saw it with her own eyes. Emily, Luke, Rossi and Garcia had warned her what she was walking into. She knew she wouldn’t be seeing the same Spencer she once knew. But she never expected him to be hostile towards her. 

“Seriously Jennifer, I don’t want to see anyone unless it’s Emily. So you should just leave. I’m really not in the mood.” He shuffled himself on his crutches so his back was to her. 

It broke her heart in two. She knew they weren’t as close as they used to be, but she still thought he’d be happy to see her. 

“You know, I think I preferred the high Spencer.” She spat angrily and she saw his back stiffen. 

He took a breath before slowly shuffling back around to face her. 

“What?” 

“The last time I saw you. You were a complete disaster but at least you weren’t an asshole!” 

“W-when was that?” He softened a little. 

JJ rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her chest. 

“I don’t know, two months ago?” 

“T-two months ago?” He slowly hobbled closer to her. “I need to know everything.” 

And although JJ didn’t want to tell him, the look in his eyes was desperate. 

She sighed and settled back down before she recounted every detail.

JJ’s favourite way to blow off steam after a tough case was simply to run. Headphones in, music blasting in her ears while she ran and ran for miles. 

Feeling the breeze against her face as she ran made her feel as though it was blowing her worries away. The ache she felt in her muscles as she pushed herself grounded her. 

She ran all the way up Capitol Hill and was working her way around the outskirts of Folger Park, a light sheen of sweat on her forehead as the burn started to spread to her calves. 

It was early, only a little after six am and the sun had yet to rise fully over the horizon and the park was delightfully quiet. 

It wasn’t entirely uncommon to see homeless people sleeping on benches in the park. What was peculiar about the one asleep on the bench she was approaching was the familiar mop of brown curls nestled into the wooden slats.

JJ slowed her pace as she got closer, heart race increasing and not from the exertion of her run. 

Long, spindly limbs were curled precariously on the bench, tucked underneath a navy blue overcoat. Battered converse clad feet hung over the end of the seat and a dried puddle of vomit was on the floor next to a used syringe. 

The closed eyes surrounded by dark circles and cracked lips belonged to none other than her best friend who she hadn’t seen in well over a year. 

Spencer looked peaceful. A part of her didn’t want to wake him because she was sure he would not be so serene once he was conscious. Despite being covered by his coat she could already see how terrifyingly skinny he was. 

She cautiously neared him and crouched next to the bench. She couldn’t stop herself from reaching out and stroking his messy hair off his face. His forehead was freezing and she wondered how long he’d been out here for. They were miles from his apartment. How had he gotten here? What had brought him up here? 

“Spence?” She whispered, not wanting to startle him. “Spence?” 

When he didn’t stir she gently placed her hand on his arm and nudged him a little. 

“Spencer?” She raised her voice slightly, shaking him a little harder. 

His lips parted and a soft groan left his mouth. He shifted a little on the bench. 

“Spencer?” She tried again, really shaking him this time. His eyes fluttered slightly but didn’t open properly. “Spence, it’s JJ.” 

“Hmm.” He hummed a little. “JJ?” 

She heard it in his voice. He didn’t know who she was. Her chest tightened with the realisation and tears swam in her eyes. She had to keep it together for now. 

When his eyes opened his pupils were barely visible and his eyes were incredibly bloodshot. She watched them as they explored her face, taking her in without recognition. 

“Spence,” she pouted. “It’s JJ. Jennifer.” 

A few seconds passed by but they felt like hours to JJ. Finally his eyes widened in realisation and a slightly dopey smile pulled at the corners of his dry lips.

“JJ!” He scrambled to sit up on the bench with a little help from JJ. 

She got up and sat next to him, handing him over her water flask without a word. He practically snatched it from her hands and downed the entire thing. 

“W-where are we?” He croaked once the water was gone. 

“Folger Park.” She told him but he just frowned in confusion. “Capitol Hill.” 

“Capitol Hill?” He frowned. “How did I g-get here?”

“I don’t know, Spence.” She sighed. “What drugs are you on?” 

His frown turned into another slightly wistful smile. 

“Good drugs. Good drugs.” He hummed. 

“We should get you home. I’m going to call Will and get him to pick us up.” She patted his knee. “Sit tight for a minute.” 

“Hmm.” 

JJ pushed herself back up and took a few steps away while unfastening her phone from its holder on her bicep. 

Will answered on the second ring. 

“Cher, everything ok?” 

“I need you to come and pick me up from Folger Park. I found Spencer passed out on a bench, he’s high Will. He has no idea how he got here. He needs to go home.” She was quick to fill him in. 

“Fuck, I’ll call the nanny for the kids and be there as soon as I can.” His tone was panicked. 

“Thanks. See you soon.” Just as quickly as the call started, it ended and she turned to head back to Spencer. 

But the bench was empty. And Spencer was gone.

“I came to your apartment almost everyday after that. Every day we weren’t away on a case, I came to your place but you never answered the door. Every day until Emily got the call from the hospital.” A few tears escaped her eyes as she finished her story. 

Spencer rubbed his eyes with his palms trying to force the memory from his brain but it didn’t work.

“I don’t remember any of that.” He confessed. “I don’t even know how I would have gotten to Folger Park.” 

“It was so scary. Not nearly as scary as finding out you’d overdosed though.” She wiped her tears. 

“I’m sorry I scared you.” He said but he didn’t sound at all like he meant it. “Garcia gave me the pictures from Henry and Michael. They look great in my room.” 

“They miss you.” JJ smiled sadly. 

“I miss them too.” 

“They’ve both gotten so big. And Henry still practises that magic trick you taught him nearly everyday. Every time my mom comes round he shows her even though she’s seen it at least twenty times.”

“I hope I get to see it.” Spencer sniffed. 

“Of course you will.” JJ placed her hand gently on Spencer’s knee. “You’re going to get better and you’re going to get out of here.”

“I hope so.” He rubbed his hand over his jaw. He still hadn’t had that shave and his facial hair seemed to be growing thick and fast. 

“Do you think you’ll get better?” 

Spencer’s eyes snapped onto JJ now and his eyebrows furrowed a little. 

“No one’s asked me that.” He chewed on his lip. “Everyone just keeps telling me that I will get better. But no one’s asked if I think I will.”

“And?” 

“I want to.” He nodded. “At least most of the time I do. But being sober is fucking hard. Honestly I’m torn. Half of me wants to break out of here and go on a complete binge, never get sober. But the other half of me wants to stay clean and sort my life out. It’s hard to say which part of me is going to win right now.” 

“It can’t be easy admitting that.” JJ smiled softly at him and squeezed his knee. 

“You have no idea.” He sighed. “I’m sorry I was hostile. I just really need to see Emily. I need to talk to her about…” 

“Yeah.” JJ nodded, knowing what he was going to say without him actually saying it. 

“I know she told you not to talk to me about Y/N. But it’s just…I wish someone would talk to me. I’m not a child.” He huffed which contradicted his words. 

“We just don’t think…it’s not that we think…” JJ couldn’t get her thoughts into words. 

“You don’t think I’m strong enough to handle the truth.” He closed his eyes, chest aching. 

Spencer wasn’t sure he could handle the truth either. He’d dwelled on nothing but his new theory for days. And the more he contemplated it, the more it scarily made sense. But also it made absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever. 

He might be forgetting your face but he could still feel you so clearly. If he closed his eyes and concentrated hard enough he could feel your silken skin, every curve of your body beneath his fingertips. He could feel your glossy hair as he buried his digits in the locks and your lips as they pressed against his, even your tongue as it explored his mouth. 

He could feel the way you clenched around him when he pushed you to your orgasm. He could feel the way he caused your body to react to him. He could smell your lavender shampoo and the perfume you always wore. 

He could taste the cocaine still on your gums when he…

…no that wasn’t right. You didn’t taste like drugs. You didn’t do drugs. 

His eyes snapped open to see JJ staring at him in confusion. He hadn’t realised how long he’d been lost down a rabbit hole of thoughts. 

“Are you ok, Spence?” She asked, her voice laced with concern. 

Are my memories real? Just tell me if they are real or if I’m going mad. Am I just simply forgetting her or is something bigger at play? I need to know, just tell me JJ. Just tell me and do it fast. Like ripping off a bandaid. Just get it over with. 

He didn’t say any of that out loud. Instead he grabbed his crutches and used them to get to his feet. 

“I need to go.” He told her suddenly. 

“What? Why? Is everything ok?” She jumped up too. 

“Yes I’m fine. I’m just…exhausted. Between therapies I’m just constantly drained.” It wasn’t a complete lie. 

The institute kept its patients on tight schedules to try and avoid too much time spent thinking. It was gruelling some days and sometimes it was nice to just be alone. 

“Oh. Ok.” JJ nodded a little sadly, clearly wanting to spend more time with him. 

“Sorry. I do appreciate you coming but I’m just so tired.” 

“It’s ok.” JJ forced a smile. “Take care of yourself, ok?” 

“Thanks.” He nodded, shuffling back on his crutches. 

He turned slowly and JJ watched him hobble away across the courtyard and towards the building. Her heart broke for her best friend. None of this should be happening to him. Maybe if she’d been a better friend she could have prevented this. 

But she supposed she’d never know.
