“Jason knows a Titan how?” Molly asked. She, Gar, and I stood in the middle of her apartment that she had just invited us into.
“We had friends in common,” Gar said, looking at me.
“Had,” Molly echoed.
“Have you seen him lately?” I asked.
“Not in a while. The last time he showed up here, he found a missing kid for me,” she answered.
“And he seemed okay?” I asked.
“Other than the wack suit, yeah. Tip top,” Molly shrugged.
“Jason’s in trouble,” Gar sighed. “We need to find him.”
“And then what?” Molly crossed her arms.
“Some people want him dead. We just wanna help him,” Gar told her.
“I think you do, too,” I said, taking a step closer.
“How does this happen?” Molly muttered. “He was erratic, but he cared. He wakes up one day and he’s just- I don’t even know. It’s like the old Jason died.”
“When Jason came back, was there anything different about him?” I asked. “His voice, the way he walked…”
“Like dead and come back to life different?” Molly scoffed. I had to keep myself from laughing.
“I don’t know, I’m trying to figure this out like you,” Gar said.
“What are you asking me?” Molly shifted.
“We need to talk to him. Fix this,” I said.
“Aren’t you his girlfriend? Why can’t you talk to him?”
“He’s been ignoring me,” I shook my head.
“You two think you’re the people for the job?” Molly asked. Something out the window caught Gar’s attention. Molly and I followed him to the window. In the sky, there was a “T”. I laughed to myself. Maybe Babs decided that the Titans were worth the risk.
“Not just us,” Gar chuckled. “Elana, we have to go. Molly, if you hear anything from him at all, please tell us.”
“Go ahead, Gar. I’ll meet you back later,” I told him. He nodded and headed out the door.
“You know, he talked a lot about you,” Molly said. “You made him better, so I don’t know why he wouldn’t talk to you.”
“He’s overprotective. I think with the trouble he’s gotten himself into, he doesn’t want anyone he cares about getting in harm’s way,” I sighed. “You said he helped find a missing kid?”
“Yeah. He showed up in a weird costume and brought the missing kid back, but something was definitely off.”
“This really helps, you telling us this. It gets us closer to bringing him home,” I told her.
“Do you know what happened to him?”
I bit my lip. “I think he got involved with some people he shouldn’t have. I’m not sure who, but I think it has something to do with drugs,” I sighed. She nodded.
“Bring him back,” she said. “I’ll see if I can get ahold of him. If I can, I’ll tell you.”
“Thank you,” I nodded.
“You’d better go. It seems like the city needs you and your friends,” she pointed out the window.
“I guess you’re right. It was nice to meet you.”
“You too,” she smiled softly. “Maybe after this is all sorted out, I could show you around my part of town.”
“I’d like that,” I smiled. “I’ll see you later.”

Kory and I walked into the kitchen where Dick had just hung up with Barbara.
“Hey,” Kory greeted him. “I thought you were going to the gala.”
“I am,” Dick said.
“Pregame meal?” Kory asked.
“Have you seen the dinners of those things?” I scoffed. “Chicken the size of golf balls.”
“Dick,” Kory said, handing him a napkin. I snickered at the fact that he had already managed to spill.
“Thanks,” Dick said.
“Enjoying some of our good press?” I asked, looking at the iPad in front of him.
“Barb asked me to look at it,” Dick said. “It’s a “T” in the sky.”
“Yes, yes it is,” Kory laughed. The speaker beeped and Gar’s voice came through.
“Hey, Dick?”
“What’s up?” he responded.
“Someone’s here to see you and Elana,” Gar said.
“I’m heading out,” Dick said.
“I’m not feeling particularly social,” I said.
“No, you’re gonna wanna talk to him,” Gar said.
“Gar, I can’t be late,” Dick sighed.
“He said he knows you’re Nightwing and that Elana’s the Huntress,” Gar said. I could feel the blood drain from my face. The feed was sent to the iPad. There was a kid standing outside, pacing. I looked at Dick with a questioning look and he returned it.
“Who is this?” Dick asked.
“He says his name’s Tim. Tim Drake,” Gar told us.
“Maybe a friend of Crane’s?” Kory suggested.
“That was right after he told me Bruce Wayne is Batman,” Gar said. Dick and I shared one more look and headed to greet Tim.
“I was there,” Tim said as we sat down. “At the beginning, at the end. I went to Haly’s circus to see the flying Graysons the night your parents were killed. You signed it for me before the show. I remember every move you performed. Then one day, I saw Batman and Robin on the news chasing Penguin. Robin did a one-handed meat hook to scale a rain gutter.” He showed us the papers. “A trapeze move only two people in the world could do. You and your dad.”
“So Robin pinched my moves?” Dick scoffed. “I can’t copyright them.”
“Then, the Titans made a splash,” Tim set down a picture of the Titans. “I heard they were good so I started keeping tabs. Guess what? Nightwing also does the same one-handed meat hook. You were Robin then Nightwing.” Tim looked very proud of himself. Dick leaned forward and picked up one of the pictures. “Keep ‘em, I got copies,” Tim said.
“Thank you,” Dick said. I was leaned against the doorframe, smirking. Dick had a fan. “Like I said, stole my moves. Come on, follow me.” Dick stood up, Tim followed, and I followed him. Tim awkwardly waved at me and I smiled back.
“Gothamites we’re treated to a mid-evening declaration that a new sheriff has arrived in town,” the news channel said.
“My dad got shot and the Titans put on a light show?” Tim scoffed. Dick turned off the IPad and grabbed his keys.
“I’m sorry about your dad,” I said, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“It wouldn’t have happened if Batman were here,” Tim said. Dick looked slightly annoyed as he turned around. “You need help.”
“Help?” Dick asked.
“I want to be the next Robin.” Dick stopped in his tracks. My eyes widened in surprise.
“You’re barking up the wrong tree. I appreciate your imagination, but Bruce Wayne is just a philanthropist who’s currently consulting in Europe. And I’m just a former Detroit City cop. And Elana’s a rich gymnast. We don’t wear capes,” Dick said.
“Oh, next you tell me there’s no Batcave,” Tim scoffed.
“Come on, I’ll give you a lift home,” Dick said. I patted Tim on the shoulder and walked past him into the living room. I waited until they were pulled out of the driveway and then hopped on my bike to follow them. I trailed them discreetly so that Dick wouldn’t realize I was trailing him. I followed him through the streets of Gotham until he came to a stop by a sidewalk. I parked back behind the corner and waited for Dick to drive off. Once he did, I rounded the corner.
“Tim!” I called. Tim turned around, looking surprised to see me. I caught up with him.
“Um, hey, Elana,” he said, clearly confused.
“Can we talk?” I asked.
“Sure,” he nodded. We found a bench a little ways down and sat down.
“I know Dick would kill me if I said anything, but you know you’re right,” I sighed. “It’s actually really impressive. There have been people who should be smarter than you that haven’t figured out our identities.”
“Thanks,” Tim smiled.
“Just out of curiosity, how did you figure out who I was?” I asked.
“Well, I figured Dick out first and you two always seemed to be together. From what I could gather about you, getting anything on you was hard by the way, you were always with a Robin, usually Dick. And Bruce took you in after your parents died, who were both superheroes. You’re also a gymnast. A lot of the Huntresss moves are very gymnast-like.”
I laughed. “Look at you, detective.”
“Even then, I wasn’t sure until I saw the small scar under your ear. One night you were fighting Bane and some of his thugs and your hood caught. It was pulled back enough that I was able to see it. But it was only because I knew what to look for.”
“You are crazy,” I laughed. “I’m seriously impressed.”
“Thanks,” he smiled.
“And about your dad, is there anything I can do?” I asked.
“Not now, no,” he shook his head. “Dick offered, too.”
“If you think of something later, just tell me. I’d be more than happy to help,” I smiled. “Are you staying near here, or…”
“My cousin is just around the corner,” he pointed behind him. “I should probably head that way. It was nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, too, Tim. I’m sure we’ll talk again sometime.” He smiled and waved, jogging off. I smiled to myself. I liked the guy. He would make a good Robin, but I’m not gonna recommend it. Things don’t work out amazingly if you’re a Robin. But you get to meet me, so that’s a plus. I headed back toward my motorcycle when my phone started to ring. It was Babs.
“Hey,” I answered.
“Have you seen Dick?” she asked, panic in her voice.
“Uh, like ten minutes ago. Why? Is something wrong?” I asked.
“I was on the phone with him and we were tracking Jason then he just stopped talking out of nowhere but his call never went off,” she rambled.
“What was his last location?” I asked.
“He was headed toward the south end of Ripley Park. I heard something crash and then he went silent. Elana, something’s really wrong,” Babs said.
“Relax, Barbara. I’m sure he’s fine,” I said. I hopped on my bike and went to go to that street. Just as I did that, an ambulance flew by, lights flashing and sirens blaring.
“Uh, Elana?”
“Yeah, hold that thought and check for any recent 911 calls,” I said. There was a pause before she spoke again.
“Two minutes ago. Someone called in that Dick was hit after pulling out from behind a car,” she breathed.
“Great. Meet me at the hospital,” I sighed, hanging up and taking off on my bike.
—————————
Babs and I found Dick at the hospital in the middle of his operation. It was quick. Dick would be fine, but Babs and I stayed the night just in case. We were sitting with him as the doctor was checking his vitals when he shot awake.
“Morning, sunshine,” I smirked.
“How are you feeling?” Babs asked.
“Like I was hit by a truck,” he groaned. “How was the gala?”
“It was amazing,” Babs said. “I danced my butt off.”
“Liar,” the nurse said. “These two were here ten minutes after you came in. Didn’t sleep a wink.” Barbara laughed softly as the nurse left the room.
“I’m sorry,” Dick mumbled. “I better call home.”
“No need to worry about that,” I said. “I did. Everyone’s worried, obviously, but I told them I had you covered. Actually, when I said that they were even more worried. They relaxed when I mentioned Babs was here, too.”
“Thanks.” Dick gave a small smile.
“It’s quite a spill you took,” Babs said. “You’re luck they paramedics got there so quick. Somebody anonymously dialed 911.”
“I think it was Jason,” Dick said.
“What?” I furrowed my eyebrows.
“Funny,” Barbara said.
“I’m not kidding. He was standing right over me when I was on the ground,” Dick said.
“Babe, you hit your head pretty hard,” Babs started.
“You’re saying Jason was standing over you, but called 911 instead,” I took over.
“He must have lost his nerve. Ran out of drugs. Who knows?” Dick suggested. “He’ll be easier to finish off now.”
“Hey,” I snapped. “Don’t even think about it.”
“Finish?” Babs asked calmly.
“Bruce used to say throw water on a drowning man, what was the deal,” Dick told us.
“Hey, I know that the peaceful way might not have the same “Batman” flourish that you’re looking for, but if Jason wants to end this quietly, then we do that,” Babs said.
“I’m sorry, what?” I chimed in.
“Right?” Barbara asked Dick, ignoring me.
“Right,” Dick said after hesitating.
“How’s your head?” I changed the subject.
“It’s fine,” Dick answered. “Can I get out of here, or what?”
Barbara looked back at an eye chart. “Read the sixth line,” she instructed.
“Jewelry thief, police commissioner, and now optometrist,” Dick joked.
“Humor me,” Babs insisted.
“E, D, F, C, Z, P,” Dick read quickly.
“Good,” Babs said. “Read the eighth line.” Dick looked at it long and hard, with a confused look in his eye.
“D, E, F, P, O, T, E, C,” he finally recited. “Is that good enough for you, doctor. Can I go now?”
“Not quite,” Barbara said. “Soon, though.” She looked down. “Crap. I think I have an 11 o’clock with the mayor.”
“You tell him we’re getting close,” I said.
“Yeah,” Dick nodded. “We’ll wrap this up and give the city back.”
“Whose city will it be then?” Babs asked.
“Yours, of course, Commissioner,” Dick said.
“All right,” Babs sighed. “I’ll give the mayor both of your regards.” She took Dick’s hand. “Be back in a few hours. Don’t go running off.”
“Ew, you two. PDA.” I fake gagged.
“Shut up, Elana,” Dick said. Barbara left as I looked back at Dick.
“So… I’d love to hang around, but I have places to be,” I said, backing toward the door.
“Like what?” Dick scoffed.
“The couch misses me,” I said with a smirk. “I’ll see you later, but if you get hurt again, I’ll kill you myself.”
—————————
I was spinning around in my chair in the Cave while Gar paced, food in his hand. We had run out of conversation topics about fifteen minutes ago. The computer was running a search for Jason, but I knew it wouldn’t work. Jason was too smart.
Finally, something happened. Gar’s phone started ringing.
“Hello?” he answered. He went still.
“Who is it?” I whispered. He didn’t answer.
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll tell him. Thank you, Molly.” Then, he hung up.
“Molly?” I asked. “Did she get ahold of Jason?”
“Jason wants to meet with Dick alone in the Townsent Tunnels at six o’clock,” Gar answered.
“Wait, for a fight?” I furrowed my eyebrows.
“No, just Dick. Not Nightwing.”
“Did she say why?” I asked.
“No,” Gar sighed. I nodded. “I’m gonna go tell Dick.”
“‘Kay,” I muttered. Gar headed upstairs and I leaned back in my chair, deep in thought. If I followed Dick, I’d be able to find Jason, who still hadn’t answered my calls or texts. My only problem would be the cameras and other equipment Bruce had installed in the tunnels. Not too hard, but more work than needed. I’d take my chance.
—————————
I waited until Dick left for the tunnels and followed him. I didn’t get too close to him, because he may be easy to tail, but he wasn’t stupid. We finally got to the tunnel entrance and I split off. I sat outside for about five minutes before figuring I could go in. As soon as I rounded the corner, I almost ran into a person and my heart jumped, worried it was Dick.
“Elana?” Tim asked.
“Hey, Tim,” I sighed.
“You looking for Dick?” He pointed behind him.
“Kind of,” I laughed.
“You weren’t supposed to come with him,” Tim realized.
“Yeah,” I said.
“Go. I won’t say anything.” Tim smiled.
“Thanks, Tim.” I waved and ran off into the tunnels. As I walked down the steps, I pulled up my hood and activated a piece of tech I had around my wrist. It would loop any security cameras in a certain radius of me to make it seems like I wasn’t there. And yes, I did steal it from Bruce. As I crept through the tunnels, I heard Jason over the loudspeaker.
“Are you alone?” I assumed he was asking Dick.
“I am. Are you?” I faintly heard Dick respond from the other direction.
“Me and Crane are finished. I’m done killing for him.” I stopped for a second and smiled to myself.
“How do I know that?” Dick asked.
“You saw me standing over you. I could’ve killed you Dick,” Jason said. I kept moving and pulled out my phone to track where the intercom room was.
“What do you want?” Dick asked.
“I want to come home,” Jason said. “Be with my friends, my girl,” I smiled, “be a Titan again.”
“You killed Hank.” Dick’s voice was barely audible now.
“That wasn’t me. That was the drugs talking. Crane talking, too,” Jay defended. “But I’m clean now.”
“You can come home if you give up Crane,” Dick called. I looked back down at my phone to see how close I was. I took a few more turns and found the room. Jason had his back to the door, so I propped myself up against the doorframe and waited until he was done.
“Live in the house?” Jay asked.
“Right in your own bed,” Dick said.
“Meet me at the old Wellington pump station. And Dick? Thank you,” Jason said.
“Of course, you’re family.” Jason hung up the speaker and sighed.
“You’re avoiding me,” I spoke up. Jason jumped and turned around. He let out a breath of relief when he saw it was me.
“You’re gonna give me a heart attack,” he said. “Dick said he was here alone.”
“He certainly thought he was.” I smirked.
“No regard for the rules?” He laughed.
“That’s why you love me. But why are you avoiding me?” I asked, uncrossing my arms and walking up to him.
“I’m not avoiding you,” he said. I raised an eyebrow and he wrapped his arms around my waist. “I’m not.”
“Why don’t I believe you?” I asked.
“I was trying to protect you,” he sighed. “Crane threatened you and I didn’t want you to get hurt.” I hummed.
“Do you realize how cliché that is?” I grinned.
“My bad if I love you.” Jay leaned in and gave me a kiss.
“You really wanna come back?” I asked, looking him in the eye.
“Yeah, I do. I miss my friends, my bed, my girl.” He smiled.
“I bet you do.” I gave him another kiss. “I’m pretty great.”
“You have a bigger ego than me,” Jay laughed. I smiled and went in for a kiss, but the ringing of my phone stopped me. “Every time,” Jason groaned. I scoffed and answered it.
“What do you want, birdbrain?” I answered.
“What’s up with you and your nicknames?” Dick asked.
“It’s fun.” I smirked to myself.
“Team meeting. I need you there. It’s about Jason and him being back on the team.”
“Yup. I’m on my way,” I sighed and hung up. “Dick wants to talk about your request to rejoin the team,” I told Jason.
“You should go, then. You promise to put in a good word for me?” Jay asked.
“Always.” I smiled.
—————————
“You said he could do what?” Kory exclaimed.
“He killed Hank,” Conner said.
“He kidnapped kids. He made that woman snap her own neck!” Kory listed. I looked down and sighed from my spot leaned against the wall.
“We’re just gonna set and extra place at the table?” Conner scoffed. “Oh, hey, Jay. Pass the mashed potatoes.”
“He’s offering to turn himself in and bring in Crane,” Dick said calmly.
“This is crap. You’re forgiving a murderer,” Kory said.
“We need Crane,” Dick said.
“Hold on. What if all the killing was Scarecrow?” Gar pointed out. I nodded in agreement.
“No, he needs to be held accountable,” Dick shook his head.
“You didn’t hold me accountable when Cadmus took me over, made me a killer,” Gar raised his voice. “You guys all took me back. No questions asked. Because we’re family. Jason deserves the same chance.”
“Yeah,” I spoke up. “You all know about what I’ve done. And I did it on my own accord. I was let back in by just saying I wanted to turn myself around. Why shouldn’t that apply to Jason?” Everyone looked around at each other.
“Alright. We bring ‘em both in and after that, we assess the situation,” Dick said.
“I’ve never met the guy, but I’m bullish on second chances,” Blackfire spoke up from the back of the room.
“Batcave, five minutes,” Dick instructed. I went off to the Cave. I started feeling better about the situation between Jason and the Titans. I pulled out my phone to call Jason when Gar stepped in front of me.
“You followed Jason into the tunnels,” he said with a smile.
“How’s you know?” I asked innocently.
“You were gone at six. I’m not stupid. Did you talk to him?”
“Yeah. He said he wants to come home and he misses his friends. And me, but that besides the point,” I laughed.
“Do you think we’ll get him back?” Gar asked.
“You know, I think we will.”
“Elana.” I turned around to see Dick walking my direction.
“I gotta go deal with this.” Gar nodded. “Yeah?” I asked Dick, walking up to him.
“I trust your judgement, so I need you to look at this from an outside point of view,” Dick said. “Would you give Jason another chance?”
“Logically, yeah, I would. Me, Gar, and Kory were all given second chances. And Jason went through the Lazarus Pit, which can change a person, believe me. It just makes the most sense,” I answered.
“‘Kay.” Dick nodded. “But if this goes south, I’m blaming you.” He began to walk away with an amused smirk on his face.
“What?!” I cried, chasing after him.
—————————
We got to the way to the Wellington pump station and stepped out of our collective vehicles.
“This is the place,” Dick sighed. A sharp gunshot rang out through the cold, crisp night.
“That came from over here,” I said. I led the group in the direction of the shot until Conner sped ahead.
“That was Jason!” he called. “There’s someone on the ground!” We ran closer and knelt down beside the form on the ground.
“Tim,” I breathed. He had blood running out of his mouth and looked as if he was trying to speak through the blood filling his lungs. Dick put pressure on his wound and I checked his pulse. “Conner?”
“Looks like the bullet went clean through,” Conner said, his eyes glowing blue.
“Somebody call an ambulance,” Dick ordered.
“I’m on it,” Gar said.
“We need something to stop the bleeding,” I said. Conner grabbed a jacket and handed it to me. I swaddled it tightly and pressed it on his entry wound. “There’s blood in his lungs.” I looked up at Dick. “He’s gonna drown.”
“Paramedics are on their way. Three minutes tops,” Gar announced. Dick zoned out for a second and jumped back to reality the next. I decided not to bring it up due to the situation.
“Hey, Dick, you alright?” Gar asked, kneeling down next to us. He pinched his nose and backed away from Tim. Something wasn’t right.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” he said, not very convincingly.
“Here, take over,” I told Gar. He placed his hands on the jacket to keep pressure.
“Kory and I are going this way,” Dick said.
“We’ll go around back,” Conner said. “You stay here, girl,” he told Krypto.
“I’m going in side entrance,” I announced. I ran in the door to be greeted with darkness and a damp smell. I slowed down and crept around the cramped area. I turned night vision on my mask. There was machinery all around, but no signs of anyone else. I took out my bullwhip and let it dangle behind me as I walked down the stairs.
Before I found anything, a loud boom came from the next room. I rushed through the door to see a pipe with a huge hole in it and Dick and Kory staring down at it.
“This can’t be good,” I muttered to myself.
