Crazy ex-natural

Okay, hear me out.

I had an idea of a crossover between Supernatural and Crazy ex-girlfriend (one is definitely more popular than the other), where Dean would play Rebecca's role:

Dean met Benny when they were young, around 16 years old. They saw each other for the first time at that summer camp back in the days, which was called Purgatory. It was a kind of military camp where Dean's father, John, sent him to put him back on track before the next school year. Dean chose his own track and it was Benny. They started the kind of relationship Dean never knew before. They had a lot of fun and Dean was probably in love. That's why bumping into him here, among all the other streets of New York, where Dean is having a life crisis right now, seems to be a sign of fate.

A fate that Dean decides to follow. He drops his job at the major law firm, and moves to California, more specifically to West Covina, where Benny had always lived with his family and friends.

Dean joins a little law firm here and finds a new flat. He meets new people, one barmaid named Crowley that seems sarcastic but funny and kinda cute, a coworker named Charlie who probably will become his best friend, but Benny is nowhere to find for now.

Mystery/Thriller Monday

It’s summer in New Orleans, and that means that Chanse MacLeod’s new case (he’s a PI) probably won’t wind up being as simple as he thinks it will be. It starts as him being hired to find out who is blackmailing the rich and closeted boyfriend of his client, Mike. It doesn’t stay that way as he winds up being late to their meeting, and finds that Mike is dead.

From there the twists and turns kept me guessing, and the characters were amazing, from the character of New Orleans to Paige (reporter), to Paul, and so many more that leapt off the page.

The Show Must Be Go - a post CSI 8x16 crack fic

(A/N: Dedicated to @addictedtostorytelling and @sidlesbitch for their advice and encouragement during my struggles when writing this and the If the CSI Characters Swore headcanon set. Okay, before we get any further, check out these posts

Yeah. That's what this fic is about. I picked out the most suitable song I knew, which would be The Show Must Be Go by Kevin MacLeod

Weeeeeee are just going to ignore timings and pretend that this song existed in 2008. This is a really short crack fic just for good feels.)

Grissom knew that his boys tended to play and fool around during slow nights, but he had never fathomed that their goofing around could take on this level of insanity.

He was walking along the hallway, flipping through the case folder of the Anabelle Fundt case, or the rubber chicken case as David had so aptly named it, when he heard the squawking of rubber chickens coming from the break room. His head jerked up. For one thing, they had just solved the case, and for another, the squawking came from multiple chickens, whilst they had only found one throughout the duration of the case.

He snapped the folder shut and quickened his pace, making a beeline for the break room. He slid his heels to a stop and put his hand on the doorframe when he reached his destination. The most conspicuous eye-catcher was the PVC pipe ramp fit for the bowling ball on the floor.  Nick had a hand on that ball, and was kneeling on the floor along Warrick and Greg.  To top it all off, there was a row of rubber chickens in between them.  On the table, there was an opened laptop which was facing the three boys. Catherine and Sara were sitting on the couch, watching them over the rims of their coffee mugs.

Grissom slowly took off his glasses. "What the fuck...?" He stared in bewilderment and disbelief, his eyebrows frowned and his mouth gaping.

"Hey Gil!" Sara greeted perkily, raising her mug in his direction; she responded first because she was the most perceptive to his voice.  Catherine gave him a lazy wave.  The three on the floor gave him variations of a distracted 'hey Grissom'.  Sara could see how distressed her husband was and waved him over.

He gladly strode over to her.  "What the hell are you doing?  And where'd you even get those things from???"  he asked as he walked.  He sat down in between the two ladies, snuggling right up to Sara, who put her arm around his neck and bent it up so that she could play with his hair. From Grissom's new vantage point, he could see that the laptop's screen was showing a YouTube video that had been paused.

The rest of them left Sara to explain the situation to Gil. "They went out and bought all this. They did clock out first.  They're arranging the chickens so that when the ball is rolled over them, they'll imitate a part of that song."  At the last part, Sara pointed to the laptop.  In the meantime, Greg, Nick and Warrick went on arranging the chickens.

Gil raised an eyebrow.  "And what song would that be?"

Nick, who was the closest to the computer, replied, "The Show Must Be Go by Kevin MacLeod."  He scrolled to the start of the video and pressed the space bar to allow Grissom to sample the song.

Gil's eyebrow fell, then both his eyebrows flinched upwards just a little bit, and that was immediately followed by his head cocking to the right slightly and twitching.  "I admire your dedication to this stupidity," he said genuinely, leaning back into Sara fully and relaxing.

Sara and Catherine laughed.  As for the boys, they were grinning brightly.  "Thank you," was the general response from the three of them.

"So, we're just doing the sounds for the trumpet at this part, up until the point before it starts to die down, since that links to when the music picks up," Nick explained, scrolling to when the trumpet first joined in and pressing 'play'.

"We've already got the first half, so we just need to repeat that," Warrick added.  Gil nodded in acknowledgment.

So the three of them laid out another set of rubber chickens in the exact same arrangement as the first set.  "Alright!  I think we're ready!" Greg declared, standing up.

"Yeah?" Nick smiled, standing up as well and putting the ball at the top of the ramp.

"Yeah.  Let it go, dude," Warrick said with a slight laugh, waving his hand down the path the ball would roll.

"Okay," Nick grinned.  He removed his hands from the bowling ball.

It rolled down the make-shift ramp, and over the rubber chickens.  As had been hoped for, the imitation of the sounds of the hopeless trumpet sounded.  All six people burst out in laughter, each one letting it through in different ways. Warrick fell back a little and needed to put his hands behind himself to prevent himself from falling. Nick and Greg let out whooping laughs of celebration and heartily hi-fived each other, their hands high in the air and sounding a loud slap. Catherine laughed and choked on her drink the way she had when Gil told her he had missed her tush. Sara was looking at Gil, seeking the reaction of the one she loved the most. The said lover had buried his face in her shoulder to hide his laughter, but she could feel his stupid smile.  She used her arm around his shoulders to pull him closer, leant her head down and smooched the top of his head.  She felt his smile drop, his body stiffen and his face heat up; he still got flustered when she gave him unexpected kisses.  It made her chuckle.

"You know..." Nick mused, "we still have more chickens.  We can make this pattern at least twice more."

"Oh.  No," Catherine snickered.

"I say let's do it!"  Warrick chimed in, standing up so that he could stretch before another session of kneeling and stooping.

"Yeah, why not?" Greg said cheerily.  He and Nick took Warrick's place on the floor.

Grissom and Sara looked at each other, fondly annoyed smiles on their faces.  Their children were idiots, and they loved them very much.

The love boat

Ran from 1976  to 1990 It starred  Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, Ted Lange, Lauren Tewes, Jill Whelan, Ted McGinley and Pat Klous. The show was based on the original 1976 made-for-TV movie  (also titled The Love Boat) which was based of a nonfiction book called The Love Boats by Jeraldine Saunders, a real-life cruise director for a passenger cruise-ship line.

The Addams family

Ran from 1964 to 1966 it starred Carolyn Jones, John Astin, Jackie Coogan, Ted Cassidy, Blossom Rock, Ken Weatherwax and Lisa Loring.  It came out the same week as The Munsters. The Addams Family is a close-knit extended family with creepy  interests and supernatural abilities, which is never explained how they got the powers in the  first place.

Mary Richards is a single woman who moves to Minneapolis and  gets a job at fictional television station WJM and is associate producer of the station's six o'clock news.

'I was beside myself': Son of Northwood resident pushes for mandatory vaccinations for long-term care workers, visitors

When Greg Sheaves found out an unvaccinated relative had been able to visit his 85-year-old mother in Halifax's Northwood long-term care facility, he couldn't believe it. 

He called Northwood, to find out how that happened.

"They explained to me that there were still employees and workers that were not vaccinated," he recalls.

"I was beside myself, I said 'excuse me?'" Sheaves said.

His mother has Alzheimer's disease and survived the deadly COVID-19 outbreak in the facility last year, which killed 53 residents.

Sheaves spent months not being allowed to see her, even as her designated caregiver.

Once she was fully vaccinated, he did the same. Even so, he still had to wait until the province lifted restrictions enough to allow him to visit again.

Now, he says anyone can come into the facility and see a resident, regardless of their vaccination status.

Sheaves says that shouldn't be allowed and says all staff in the facility should also be required to be fully vaccinated.

"To find out that there are workers inside that aren't mandated to get a vaccination is appalling to me," he says.

"We've adhered to all of their policies (as a designated caregiver), been extra careful," he says, "They've explained that their hands are tied, it has to come from the Premier."

The CEO of Northwood, Janet Simm, declined CTV's request for an interview.

In a written statement, Simm said: "Northwood continues to encourage and offer opportunities to vaccinate staff and Designated Caregivers, (and) continues to work under the guidance of Public Health and follows the directives for long-term care issued by the Department of Health and Wellness."

Those guidelines do not require staff to be vaccinated, nor do they require that visitors be screened based on their vaccination status.

 "We're opening up Nova Scotia to the world," says Sheaves, "but we're not protecting our own inside of our own borders, which is a very scary thought for me and for my mother, who is our last family member."

The head of the Nursing Homes of Nova Scotia Association says some homes have a 97 per cent vaccination rate among staff.

"We're very pleased to see we've had very strong vaccination uptake," says Michele Lowe.

"But we continue to educate those who are vaccine hesitant in the facilities."

CTV News asked Northwood for its vaccination rate among workers but was not provided the information despite several inquiries.

On Friday, some of Canada's largest private long-term care companies announced the requirement for staff to be fully vaccinated by Oct. 12 or be placed on unpaid leave.

When asked if the same should happen in Nova Scotia, NHNSA's executive director says the situation in this province is different than in other jurisdictions.

"The protocols that we've had in place long before staff were even vaccinated kept COVID out of our facilities in the third wave," says Michele Lowe.

As for screening visitors by vaccination status, "They're just asked the (usual) screening questions," says Lowe, "we certainly know that that is one of these confidential questions, and until we hear otherwise, we have not been mandated by public health to be asking those kinds of questions."

In New Brunswick servants and teachers must get the shot -- or get tested regularly.

In an email response to CTV News, Nova Scotia's Department of Health and Wellness writes:

"Vaccine policy, including mandates, is an important issue, and we are giving this careful consideration."

"At the same time, we are watching our vaccine coverage rates and epidemiology closely. Public health will bring forward recommendations on vaccine policy if it is felt that is it needed to keep all Nova Scotians safe."

If the province did mandate vaccinations for long-term care staff, Lowe says facilities would comply.

It a measure one elder care advocacy group says government should have already been implemented for all hands-on health-care workers.

Gary MacLeod of Advocates for the Care of the Elderly says even a 97 per cent vaccination rate among workers is not enough.

"It should be 100 per cent vaccination," he says, "with the elderly it's a real vulnerable segment of our population, and we need to have the utmost protection that they can get."

He believes workers who can't be vaccinated – or chose not to – could be moved into jobs that don't require patient contact.

For Greg Sheaves, it's about protecting his mother from any potential risk.

"The very least we should be doing," he says, "is the very best."

The Old Guard

* The women. The women are the decision-makers in The Old Guard. They help each other, they betray each other, they are the engines of everything that happens. The guys do stuff that matters, but they are drawing the maps -- the women decide where anyone goes. 

* Andy is betrayed by women at the start of her journey; she befriends and bonds with Quynh/Noriko, whose presence and absence shapes her character; she finds and guides Nile; she is aided by the French chemist’s clerk. 

* Nile is aided by the Afghani women who are tired of the terrorist in their midst; she is trusted by and then betrayed by her FET teammates who are justifiably freaked out by her survival; she is guided by Andy but then comes into her own and protects/saves Andy (and the boys) later. 

The women in this story, even the minor ones like the Afghani women and the pharmacy gal and the FET team and Dr. Kozak, are all given agency. None of them are pawns, none of them choose inaction when it is a viable option for them. I loved that a lot. Between Greg Rucka and Gina Price-Bythewood, no women got fridged or naked or thrown aside. Nile and Andy both took a lot of punishment and neither of them showed as much as a bra strap. 

* The guys are tropes, but in good ways. Nicky and Joe are going to be decorating gifsets for ages with their romance, with their casual affection and symbiosis in combat; I read a newspaper review of the movie that said that Joe’s declaration of love would turn up in marriage vows and I believe it. Booker is a walking tragedy who drinks constantly because he had a truly heartbreaking and traumatic experience and then spent two hundred years with the loved-up Joe and Nicky and then the nihilist Andy and that would make anyone wish for a cure for immortality. If you are old enough to have grown up with The Highlander -- and comics/screenplay author Rucka certainly is old enough and nerdy enough -- then you look at Booker and remember that not everyone moves through time with the grace that MacLeods can. 

* I still hated the epilogue. 

* That said, I wish they’d done an eight-hour series instead of a two-hour movie. (Netflix makes everything too long, so it would have been ten hours.) This would have been a great first two hours of that series. 

* I deeply regret that nobody pointed out to Copley that the human condition is suffering and that removing physical diminishment doesn’t change that. You just hurt differently. But he was holding the idiot stick for this movie to work, so....

* I watched this and had a fresh bout of wondering What-If? with the film version of The Losers, another gang of super-competent off-the-map types who are betrayed and angry about it. Booker = Roque. 

* Nile’s evolution through the movie is dramatic, but she doesn’t change who she is despite no longer knowing what she is. There isn’t anything she does that she wouldn’t have done before, including taking bullets for a vulnerable teammate. (But that was a super-cool moment, throwing herself in front of one for Andy, moreso than even her swan dive.)

Pauillac is one of the most sought-after wine regions in Bordeaux, home to world famous wineries, the appellation produces a collection of fine red wines that are unrivalled in terms of quality. Having the deepest gravel in theMédoc*, with some chalk and clay, soils and microclimates play a vital role in Pauillac. In Bordeaux, proximity to the river is also all-important. Vineyards located at the river’s edge bask in a microclimate, and this is where the highest quality wines in Bordeaux are found.

The style of Pauillac wine is what many think of as textbook Bordeaux wine; a balance of power and grace with notable flavours of cassis, blackberry, tobacco, cigar box, spice, earth and cedar wood aromas coupled with firm tannins.

Malt Master, Stephanie MacLeod, carefully monitored maturation and flavour development in the casks until the desired flavour profile had been achieved. Pauillac is a robust wine, so the goal was to use this cask type to complement and elevate the signature character of Aberfeldy, not mask it.
