Game designer Jim Ward has passed away at age 72. He was the author of many early D&D titles and Dragon articles, including Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes for OD&D (1976) and Deities & Demigods for AD&D (1980), both with Rob Kuntz, and the AD&D book Greyhawk Adventures (1988).
He created the first sci-fi RPG, Metamorphosis Alpha (1976), and cowrote the thematically related Gamma World (1978) with Gary Jaquet. Anagrams of his name appear in Greyhawk lore as the mage Drawmij, a member of the Circle of Eight, and the Dramidj Ocean in the far northwest corner of the map.

Greetings!
Walks through the forest are always full of possibilities and adventure. In their never-ending quest to be the best of the best, the party of adventurers comes across a set of streams.
Stopping to take a sip of the clear, blue waters, the party lowers their defenses for just a fraction of a moment. The rustling of leaves surprises them and they're ready to spring into action.
But nothing comes out. They wait and then they wait some more, readying their weapons and looking around the wilderness for another sign of an ambush. They feel the cool wind on their cheeks, and a deadly silence makes itself present. Still nothing.
Paranoia starts to settle in the minds of our heroes, and they desperately try to find something, anything that might prove them right in their fears.
Is someone or something really stalking our heroes? Or is an evil curse starting to take hold of their minds? A curse that might've been cast a long time ago. Are they starting to see things that aren't really there?

WG5: Mordenkainen’s Fantastic Adventure (1984) is a pretty old school adventure. Literally! Though adapted to the Greyhawk setting for publication, it actually draws primarily on a dungeon designed by Rob Kuntz for his Castle El Raja Key. Gygax experienced it as a player and it proved more than Mordenkainen was capable of (for a time, anyway). Considering that history, the framework of the adventure was likely around ten or twelve years before publication, making it a glimpse of an earlier time and design sense.
In the preface, Gygax calls it a hack and slash adventure, and that is pretty true. Three levels, all action. Lulls in the action are are punctuated by Tomb of Horrors-style death traps and the occasional puzzle (the initial entrance of the dungeon is one such puzzle, sealed with impossible to open doors). There’s a mad mage, there’s a demon, there are hints at a larger world of Greyhawk. There’s the option to play as some of Gary’s characters instead of bespoke PCs. Just the peak at Mordenkainen’s attributes feels somehow important.
It isn’t earthshaking, really, and I don’t love the climactic demon, but on the whole, I would probably pull this off the shelf if I wanted to run something in the “classic” mode. It has an energy that I like better than most of the more popular “classic” modules, though that might be thanks to over-familiarity. I certainly prefer it over Tomb of Horrors. The art package — a classic Caldwell cover and interiors by Easley — goes a long way in selling it, too.

Eddie dies.
There's nothing.
Then…there's something.
He isn’t alive but he isn’t dead either.
There's a voice echoing in his head. It's raspy, chilling. Promising him everything. Life. Power. Strength. The ability to destroy everyone who ever hurt him. To kill the town that chased him to his death.
All he has to do is accept the offer.
Be his champion.
Yes.
He feels the promise in his new fangs, tastes his own blood on his lips. Feels the life rushing to his fingertips as they sharpen into claws. Feels the power in every muscle in his once weak body as he stands to take his place next to Vecna.
But as he dons the mantle of Kas, lets himself become Vecna’s champion, the place where his heart used to beat fills with noise. Other voices clamoring for a hold on him.
Never tell me the odds.
My name is Lady AppleJack.
I’m not sure if I love the idea of you driving.
Don’t try to be heroes.
Never change Henderson.
Wasn’t planning on it.
I didn’t run away this time, right?
No, no, you didn’t run.
Take care of the sheep for me.
No, you’re gonna do that yourself.
Say you’re gonna look after them.
I’m gonna look after them.
I think it’s finally my year.
I love you, man.
I love you, too.
Eddie?
Eddie?
No. Come on!
Ed—
Eddie!!
The last voice anchors something in his chest, chains itself to the last dregs of his humanity. Henderson. He hides it away from the prying mind of the Lich. Keeps it safe.
Keeps it secret.
It waits.
To be heard.
To be needed.
To be the voice, the anchor, that binds Eddie to the family he found along the way.
To be a sword when the final die is rolled.
I love you, man.
I love you, too.

408. Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer - T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil (1985)
Tumblr media
A true classic which spawned remakes up until our days and even a computer game, this is by far the longest adventure published in one go up until this time. Looking at the code T1-4 you might think that this is a compilation of reprints into one volume (as in the later GDQ1-7 module reprints that compose Queen of the Spiders) but you'd be wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See, there was indeed a T1, The Village of Hommlet, and that does compose the opening bit of this adventure, but there is no T2, T3 or independent T4, those are all new to this edition and T2 to T4 is just the Temple of Elemental Evil, after a short trip to Nulb. The temple itself is one of the most classic of dungeon crawls, a sprawling place dedicated to cults of the four elements and then another deeper evil, the now infamous Zuggtmoy the Demon Queen of Fungi... remember that next time you have a mushroom pizza.
Tumblr media
If you had bought T1 back in 1979 you were left with a starting area with a promising setting and nowhere to go after a short adventure in a moathouse, and then you were left with a six year wait for this massive piece while Gygax got a bit distracted with the growth of TSR and Hollywood, which is only natural. When this finally came out you could throw T1, as it was reprinted here, but also you had a great time in store for you and your player with nearly 140 pages of adventure at your fingertips.

"Standing on the shoulders of Giants
Up here, I still don't feel alive! Alive!
Lived a lonely life made of wires
And I will never be alive! Alive!
Until you fell from the sky!"
Chorus to "And They Fell From The Sky" by Benn Down
Finally got done with this one for the Month of February, just a day late. This is my spin on the Mighty Servant of Leuk-O from the World of Greyhawk setting, with the idea being an alternate future of Oerth where Mighty Servants became a classification of mechs used in warfare, with Titanfall and Gungriffon being inspirations for this drawing. May design more Mighty Servants with a futuristic look to em for this Future Greyhawk idea I got in my head right now.

JUSTIFICATION:
"I mean, she transcended mortality to become a god, she's already trans, and her main goal in Die Vecna, Die is to take the place of the LADY of Pain. Why does she want to discard her mortal flesh so much if she isn't trans" - Anonymous

Some treasure party members acquired in a recent adventure. The Lyre of Building is of special note, being New Phyrexian in origin.
Though the symbol from Greyhawk is also groovy.
This is honestly the first time I've done mostly 'canon' trinkets.

Old time religion -- A mendicant collects alms outside a temple in the Free City of Greyhawk. (Jeff Easley, AD&D supplement Greyhawk Adventures by Jim Ward, TSR, 1988)
In the world of Greyhawk the priesthood of St Cuthbert is divided into three orders: the Chapeaux, the Stars, and the Billets. All three orders have access to the beguiling spell, which imbues their cudgels with the power to charm one opponent by touch. The cleric may tap the target to help convert them to the faith, or attempt a damaging attack on a more incorrigible soul.

Greetings!
There has been many reported robberies in the countryside, a group of bandits has been stealing all sorts of goods from wagons, travelers and everyone who is unfortunate enough to go through those dangerous roads outside the city.
And through a series of events that shall not be discussed here, the traveling party of heroes has learned of the location where the bandits have made their hideout.
Inside a cave, abandoned for years, there's a building with rotten floorboards and a foul stench of mold. Nobody remembers its original purpose, but now it serves as a place where the aforementioned bandits store their stolen goods, come to rest and otherwise have a good time amongst themselves.

We’ve had some good luck with the WG-series modules so far, but with WG7: Castle Greyhawk (1988), the level of quality takes a steep dip and never really recovers.
Taken on its own merits, Castle Greyhawk is…fine? I don’t know what compelled the powers that be at TSR to produce a deluxe softcover adventure named after one of Dungeons & Dragons most mysterious and never-seen locales, and turn it into a farcical parody, but that’s exactly what it is. The humor is on par with the Dragon Magazine April Fool’s issues, which, I never liked those.
The parody mirrors the real thing: Ruined upper works above thirteen dungeon levels (though this treatment isn’t very sprawling and doesn’t have much in the way of sub-levels or pocket dimensions). I get why folks who waited years for the real thing were so annoyed when this came out (even setting the history aside, for what is maybe the first true megadungeon produced by TSR to be a farce is a bit eyerolly). I don’t buy conspiracy theories that this was some parting shot at Gygax or an intentional sullying of his TSR legacy, though. It’s just a stupid idea that got into print. There are a lot of those in TSR’s history.
The Keith Parkinson cover painting is nice, at least.
