Title: It’s a Date, Chapter 1: The First Date
Fandom: Collar x Malice
Pairing(s): Minegishi/Morioka
Word count: 3258
Warnings: None
Summary: With the threat of X-Day finally eliminated, Morioka and Minegishi are as busy as ever. However, without impending disaster looming over them anymore, they have time again to consider more personal matters...the most important of which being their unspoken feelings for each other.
It had been a couple of months since the dreaded X-Day countdown ended and Adonis’s plans had been thwarted, preventing a disaster that surely would have destroyed many lives and pushed Shinjuku over the brink of chaos. The city could now breathe a sigh of relief, but for Morioka, he was as busy as ever and barely had the time to catch his breath.
With a furrowed brow, he poured over the documents spread haphazardly across his desk, carefully going over each report before filing them away into the appropriate folder. Between cleaning up the remnants of Adonis and the usual workload of the Investigations Unit, he couldn’t afford to lose focus...
“Good morning, Morioka.”
...and that was easier said than done.
Glancing up from his documents, Morioka watched as Minegishi placed a cup of coffee on the corner of his desk; it was the only spot that wasn’t covered in paper. A small smile crossed his face, and he carefully set down the papers he had been holding so that he could pick up the cup.
“Morning, Minegishi, and thanks. Didn’t even have time to grab myself a cup before I got here,” Morioka said before taking a sip of coffee, and he let out a satisfied hum when the hot liquid slipped down his throat. Minegishi smiled and waved a nonchalant hand at him.
“No need to thank me. I was up late last night and needed a cup myself, so I thought I’d bring you one too.”
“Another late night?” Morioka raised an eyebrow at him. If he was counting right, this was the third night in a row that Minegishi had almost pulled an all-nighter (and Morioka was sure that the first night had actually been one). “You’re always so busy. If I could, I’d force you to take a vacation.”
Minegishi shook his head and laughed, and the sound made a not-so-subtle warmth spread throughout Morioka’s chest. “I should be the one bugging you to take a vacation. Maybe you’d actually listen to me then, unlike my lectures to get you to stop smoking.”
Morioka rolled his eyes as he snorted. “You should give that up already.”
“I can’t promise you that.”
“Anyway, I’m glad you stopped by,” Morioka said quickly, wanting to change the subject, “I’ve collected those files that you were asking about.” He picked up one of the stacks of paper on his desk and held it out to Minegishi.
“Thanks, I appreciate it.”
As Minegishi took the files from him, his fingers brushed against Morioka’s, sending a spark coursing through the latter’s body that made his heart start to race. This wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling for him. The same thing happened when their eyes met as they passed in the hallway after a brief greeting, or when Morioka leaned over Minegishi’s shoulder to scan the documents he had been reading from and his chest pressed against his back, lingering there far longer than what would be considered appropriate for mere colleagues.
Morioka could no longer brush off these feelings; he just had to accept the fact that he had fallen - and fallen hard - for Minegishi. He had known that he had felt something for Minegishi for a long time now, but he hadn’t really been able to figure out exactly how deep his feelings were.
The X-Day Incidents had made Morioka realize that he had many things to lose, and one of those being Minegishi. He had been kept busy with leading the efforts to stop Adonis and their X-Day countdown, but the fear of losing the man that he had come to care so much about to that senseless violence had always been gnawing at the back of his mind.
Now that he wasn’t preoccupied with the possible impending doom of the entire city, Morioka had more time to consider personal matters. The most important of these were his unspoken feelings for Minegishi, and how he was going to go about confessing them.
“Well, you seem quite busy, so I’ll leave you to it.” Morioka blinked as his focus returned to Minegishi, who bowed slightly and turned towards the door. He paused as he placed his hand on the frame and he glanced over his shoulder.
“Ah, Morioka, are you free tonight?” he asked, and Morioka raised a curious eyebrow.
“Yeah, why?”
“I was just wondering if you’d like to join me for dinner? My treat.”
Morioka’s eyes widened as he stared at Minegishi in response. This wasn’t the first time he had been asked this question. In fact, he and Minegishi had gone out together a few times before the X-Day mess kept them both too busy to do so. But, the thought of having dinner with Minegishi now, after he had finally come to terms with his feelings for him, made a pit of nervousness form deep within Morioka’s gut.
“Sure. It’s a date.” The words slipped out before he could think twice about what he was saying, and Morioka felt his face heat up as Minegishi smirked at him.
“Oh? Well, I did not intend for this to be a date exactly, but I’m certainly not opposed to the idea.” Minegishi chuckled and shot Morioka a wink, and the latter averted his gaze as he rubbed at the back of his neck.
“Right...I’ll, er, see you later then.”
Morioka watched as Minegishi turned and left the office, and only when his footsteps fully faded away did Morioka let out the breath that he had been holding. Letting out a frustrated sigh, he rubbed at his temples as he stared down at his desk.
Minegishi had always been a tough person to read; he was always calm and collected, and very good at masking his true feelings, as any investigator should be. Morioka couldn’t tell if he was actually flirting with him, or just being a terrible tease. Well, Morioka was certain about one thing: this “date” would be interesting.
For once he was glad that he was so busy because the day flew by in the blink of an eye, and Morioka met Minegishi outside as soon as his shift ended. Morioka knew that Minegishi had expensive taste when it came to dining out, so he wasn’t surprised at all when they ended up at a fancy place he had never been to before.
“You really spare no expense, huh?” Morioka said when they sat down. Minegishi shrugged as he picked up the menu.
“Oh, this really isn’t too bad. Honestly, this place is rather reasonably priced.”
“...I feel like you and I have a completely different definition of ‘reasonable.’”
Minegishi laughed at that, and after they had received their drinks and ordered their food, he said, “Well, this is a date after all. I couldn’t just bring you to any run-of-the-mill place.”
“A date…” Morioka mumbled, and he hid his flushed face behind his menu. He had forgotten about that slip of the tongue, and of course Minegishi wouldn’t miss the chance to tease him about it.
“Yes, of course.” Minegishi chuckled and twirled his wine glass in his hand, the deep red liquid threatening to spill over the sides with the movement. “You were the one to call it that, if I recall correctly.”
“Yeah, yeah. Do you go around teasing everyone like this?”
“No, just you.”
Morioka rolled his eyes, but the grin that crossed his face betrayed his amusement. He had known Minegishi for a long time, so while he normally kept up his stoic and polite demeanor in front of everyone, Morioka was probably the only one who knew about this mischievous, playful side of him...and he was very happy about that fact.
“Well, you’d better show me a good time then. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a date.”
“Ah, it’s the same for me.” Minegishi a serious look appeared in his eyes as he took a long sip of his drink, and his gaze shifted to the window. Morioka was surprised at this sudden change in his demeanor, and he was even more so when a slight frown crossed his face. “In fact, it’s been so long that my family has begun suggesting an arranged marriage.”
Morioka pursed his lips and set his glass down, hard enough to make their plates clatter against the table. The intense feeling of jealousy that suddenly welled up within him surprised Morioka, but he couldn’t help it; the thought of Minegishi being with someone else was almost unbearable, especially through an arranged deal with no actual feelings involved. If Minegishi wasn’t happy, then Morioka wouldn’t be happy either.
Minegishi didn’t seem to notice Morioka’s silent objection, so the latter spoke up. “Well, I guess if you don’t want to be married off by your family, you’d better find a partner soon.”
“I suppose so.”
“Well, is there anyone you are considering dating?” Morioka tried to sound disinterested, but that didn’t stop his stomach from twisting into knots.
“Oh, I think there might be.” Minegishi turned his head away from the window and shot Morioka a smirk, and he swallowed thickly as his heartbeat quickened.
“...Well?”
Minegishi chuckled and wagged a finger in Morioka’s direction. “A man has to have his secrets, Morioka.” He laughed when Morioka pouted, unaware of the unease that had started to creep into the latter’s heart. Morioka knew that Minegishi liked to tease him, but what if he actually was interested in someone? And what if that someone wasn’t him?
Their food had arrived, so their bantering was cut off for a bit as they ate and chatted about mundane things. Morioka’s focus wavered as he watched Minegishi take a sip of his wine, taking note of how his lips molded against the glass, and his Adam's apple bobbed with the motion of him swallowing. Morioka had always thought that Minegishi was an attractive man, but he never realized before how the bastard could make a simple act such as taking a drink seem like something so...sensual.
“Hm? Is there something on my face?”
Morioka was snapped back to reality and he saw that Minegishi was watching him carefully, his head cocked to the side and an eyebrow raised. Embarrassed at being caught staring, Morioka felt his face heat up as he quickly looked away and cleared his throat.
“Er, no it’s just...did you even comb your hair this morning?” Morioka blurted out the first excuse for his staring that he could think of, and Minegishi burst out laughing.
“Oh, you’re one to talk, Morioka. You always look like you’ve just rolled out of bed and ran right out the door.” Minegishi continued to snicker as Morioka’s face flushed red and he rubbed at the back of his neck.
“That’s...usually the case, actually. I spend all my free time in the morning getting the girls ready.”
Minegishi collected himself as he nodded and cleared his throat. “I can see that. You don’t even seem to have the time to even button up your shirt properly.” Morioka’s throat grew dry when Minegishi’s gaze wandered down to his exposed collarbone and lingered there for a few long seconds. Those beautiful eyes of his eventually wandered back to his, and for a moment Morioka felt like he could drown in them. He bit the inside of his cheek and shook his head.
“You-Your hair looks like it can be fixed easier than mine, at least...” Without warning, Morioka reached across the table and pushed the stray strands of hair out of Minegishi’s face, tucking them behind his ear while being careful not to knock his glasses askew. Minegishi’s eyes widened with a rare look of shock, and Morioka quickly pulled back as he immediately started to regret what he had just done.
“Er, s-sorry. Should’ve probably...asked first…” he mumbled lamely, his gaze dropping to his plate as he poked at the little food that remained on it.
He heard Minegishi chuckle, and when Morioka glanced back up at him, he had his elbow propped on the table and his head resting in his hand. His amused gaze bore into Morioka, and the latter groaned internally at his awkward blundering, but he tried his best not to show it as he took a long drink of his wine.
“Oh, it’s fine. Thank you for that, Morioka. I would do the same for you, but I fear that the mess on your head is a lost cause.”
“...Whatever.”
Minegishi laughed again as a red-faced Morioka glowered at him, and they both continued to enjoy their meal until their plates were clean.
“That was pretty good, Minegishi. You really do have a knack for finding places with damn good food,” Morioka said as they stood up from the table after Minegishi had paid the bill.
“Ah, so I’ve been told, but it means so much more coming from you,” Minegishi said, and Morioka didn’t know what to make of that statement; he sometimes wished that Minegishi was a little less of a goddamn tease so that he could more easily tell if he was being serious or not.
“Well, next time I’m gonna take you to this pub that I used to frequent. They usually have pretty good deals on their food and drink.”
“Oh?” Minegishi smiled as they left the restaurant. “Next time? You want to go on another date?”
“Er, it doesn’t have to be a date necessarily.”
“Mm, sure, but I do like the idea. I’m having a great time on our date right now.”
Morioka stared at Minegishi for a moment before he burst out laughing. “Alright, fine, it’s another date then.” Morioka’s laughter was short-lived, however, because in his distraction, he almost stepped right into the torrential downpour happening outside.
“Careful now, you’ll get soaked.” Minegishi saved the day by grabbing Morioka’s arm and pulling him back under the building’s awning.
“Ah, thanks. I didn’t think it was supposed to rain tonight.”
“Hm,” Minegishi hummed as he scrolled through his phone. “It looks like it shouldn’t last too much longer, maybe about ten minutes or so.”
“I guess we’ll just have to wait it out.”
A comfortable silence fell between them as they watched the rain fall onto the sidewalk, and Morioka started feeling a bit anxious as he tried to figure out if Minegishi had been seriously flirting with him. He knew that Minegishi frowned upon his usual method of calming his nerves, but he was willing to take the risk of annoying him this time.
Reaching into his pocket, Morioka pulled out his lighter and a pack of cigarettes. He tried to pretend that he was alone as he lit one and took a long drag, but he could practically feel Minegishi’s disapproving gaze boring into him. Sure enough, Minegishi was indeed staring at him when Morioka glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. Morioka’s brow furrowed, and he turned fully to look at him.
“...Yes?” he inquired, even though he already knew what was coming.
“Smoking is incredibly bad for you, Morioka. You should think about quitting,” Minegishi said, and if Morioka had rolled his eyes any harder they would have popped out of his head. Minegishi was always badgering him to quit, and that’s why Morioka avoided smoking in front of him if he could help it.
Although...the thought of Minegishi caring about his health so much warmed his heart, and Morioka had to snort to hide the smile that threatened to break out over his face.
“Alright mom, I’ll be sure to think really hard about it,” Morioka grumbled, taking a deliberately long drag and blowing the smoke in Minegishi’s direction. That earned him quite the heated glare, but the mischievous grin that suddenly crossed Minegishi’s face caused Morioka to raise an eyebrow.
“I wonder why you’re so hellbent on continuing to smoke.” Morioka opened his mouth to respond, but the words caught in his throat when Minegishi suddenly plucked the cigarette from his hand.
Striking hazel eyes locked onto Morioka’s as Minegishi slowly lifted the filter to his mouth. Morioka swallowed thickly, and he wished that Minegishi was a smoker, because damn did he look hot with a cigarette held between his slender fingers.
Taking a short drag, Minegishi grimaced as he coughed a bit. He scoffed and shook his head, casting a dubious look in Morioka’s direction.
“Really, I don’t see the appeal of it at all. But,” Morioka was too shocked to respond as Minegishi tucked the cigarette back between his fingers, “to each their own, I suppose.”
Minegishi turned and started to walk down the sidewalk, while Morioka lifted the cigarette back to his face, taking a long, slow drag while secretly hoping for a taste of Minegishi that might still be lingering on the filter.
“Come on. The rain stopped, so we should get going in case it starts up again.” Morioka was finally snapped out of his stupor and he looked up to find Minegishi glancing at him over his shoulder with a stupid, smug grin on his face.
“Right…” Morioka mumbled as he moved to follow. They struck up some lighthearted conversation that put Morioka at ease, and all too soon, they were standing in front of his place.
“Well, I better get up there. Gotta make sure my girls get something good to eat too,” Morioka said, smiling as he turned towards Minegishi and offered him a slight bow, “Thanks again for dinner. I had a good time tonight.”
“Oh, you’re most welcome.” Minegishi chuckled as he suddenly reached out and took Morioka’s hand, and the latter’s eyes went wide. “I am certainly looking forward to our next date.” Morioka’s heart leapt right into his throat when Minegishi lifted his hand to his lips and placed a light kiss upon his knuckles. He knew that Minegishi was a horrible tease, but this was on another level entirely...and it gave Morioka a sliver of hope that maybe Minegishi wasn’t just fucking with him and his feelings.
“Oh my, seeing you speechless is indeed a rare sight,” Minegishi teased, giving the still-stunned Morioka’s cheek a light pat with his hand. Morioka couldn’t respond as he watched with wide eyes and his jaw agape as Minegishi stepped towards the street and flagged down a cab.
“Goodnight, Morioka,” he said softly, before disappearing inside. Morioka was still frozen in place, and his eyes were glued to the cab as it drove off. He didn’t even realize that it had started raining again, even as his hair and clothes started to become soaking wet.
His gaze shifted down to his hand, where Minegishi's lips had brushed against his skin, the warmth lingering in spite of the cold rain. Slowly, he lifted his hand to his lips and kissed right over the spot that Minegishi had, before barking out a boisterous laugh.
“You teasing bastard…” Morioka mumbled, a broad smile slowly spreading across his face. He may have been soaked to the bone by the chilly rainwater, but all he felt was an overwhelming amount of warmth that originated in his chest and spread quickly throughout his entire being. When he finally was able to move again, he turned and headed up to his apartment, hoping to come up with some excuse as to how he had gotten so thoroughly wet to tell his girls. It was difficult, because all that he could really think about was how much he was looking forward to his next date with Minegishi.

So this is the last of my first set!
Basically I took screenshots of all the ones I had received up until this point after receiving this one, so I’ve been working through all of those.
Though don’t worry! That doesn’t mean I’ll be slowing down or stopping anytime soon. I have more suggestions in my inbox than I ever have before, so I think I’ll be busy for quite some time.
Still, keep them coming if you have ideas! It might just take me a while to get around to them.
Hajime Morioka -
- At first he tried to keep things secret, though people began to notice when they noticed the slight blush which would appear on his cheeks whenever he saw his S/O. Even once everyone knew, he would become frustratingly embarrassed when he and his S/O's relationship was brought up.
- When the two had began dating, he went over to his S/O's direct coworkers and asked – though everyone heard it as him demanding – that they keep an eye out for his S/O and make sure they didn't end up doing anything stupid which may have ended up with them hurting themselves.
- Everytime he thinks his S/O is involved in a particularly difficult case, he scolds them for ending up on it, and tries to make sure it doesn't happen as much as possible. He also 'secretly' keeps his eye on them, making sure nothing could happen. He hates that his S/O could get in any bad situation, even though he isn't really one to talk.
- He tends to try not to be around his S/O to much, partially because he's afraid of being distracted and also because he thinks he won't get as much work done. However, he does often send her a message at the very least to check in on her every now and again.
- As hard as he tries not to show that he's in a relationship, he struggles when he is stressed. In these times, he tends to search for her and take her some place they can be alone so he can 'vent his stress'. Luckily, they have never been caught during these times.
- Hajime still gets embarrassed when every now and again he sees a bento on his desk, with a note stuck on it which has some sort of motivational message.
Seiji Minegishi -
- He doesn't let his relationship get in the way of work, though he does have his S/O helping out where possible. At work, the two are like perfect teammates, and really work in sync. So much so that those around them are in complete awe.
- As soon as he and his S/O began dating, he made sure to be upfront and told people what was going on. This was mostly to avoid drama down the line, however, it was also because he honestly found him wanting people to know.
- The two spend their lunches together wherever possible and more often than not, will eat bentos which either of them has prepared for the two. Other times, they will go out for a meal together if Seiji had decided he wanted to do that.
- When Seiji is in a meeting which involves his S/O also being there, he tends to shoot glances and also slips secret messages into the things he's saying. His messages are things which only his S/O understands as he enjoys seeing how embarrassed S/O feels because of this.
- There are times when he will go quite a while of ignoring his S/O, knowing it will begin to frustrate her. He will then call her to his office, (assuming he has one, otherwise his desk) and make up for the lack of attention he has given. The way he does this changes, depending entirely on how he's feeling at the time.
In my head, I had read the suggestion as co-worker at first.
And then once I reread that it said subordinate, I started getting more ideas which is insane!
Anyway, hope you enjoyed!
Also, you should all be proud of me. I managed to get today’s one done earlier today!
... Admittedly, this is only because I had to be up for a job interview ^^;
