The warm Hawaiian sun kisses your skin as you and your boyfriend, Park Seonghwa, zip down the coastal highway on a sleek vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle he decided to rent less than an hour ago. The wind whips through your hair, salty and free, as you cling tightly to Seonghwa, your arms wrapped around his waist.
The rhythmic hum of the engine matches the beating of your heart, both racing with the thrill of the ride and the unspoken bond between you.
Your breath catches as the motorcycle swerves gently between lanes on the seemingly heart-shaped highway that hugs the coastline. The turquoise waves crash against the rocks below, a perfect backdrop for your spontaneous adventure. Every curve of the road feels like a new beginning, each mile bringing the two of you even closer together.
You had met Seonghwa just three months ago, a chance encounter at a sports car exhibition. His easy smile and carefree attitude had immediately caught your eye. You were drawn to his sense of adventure, the way he lived in the moment, a stark contrast to your usually meticulous and planned life. You worked as an automotive designer and were currently on vacation for two weeks, and Seonghwa was a model who happened to love motorcycles and cars. He actually had a photoshoot in Hawaii for a magazine and had asked you if you would like to come with him since your vacation days were at the same time. Of course, you would never miss an opportunity like this.
Now, in Hawaii, it hadn't taken Seonghwa much to convince you to hop on the rented Harley for a late-night ride under the stars that very first night you landed on the beautiful island. The way he looked at you, with a mix of curiosity and genuine interest, made you feel like you had known him forever, though it had only been three months.
Now, you seemed inseparable, spending every free moment together. Three months felt like three years— it was that natural with him.
It was a Sunday, the perfect day to escape the routine and explore the scenic island.
"Why don't we get out of town today?" Seonghwa had suggested that afternoon after lunch, his eyes gleaming with excitement. Without hesitation, you had agreed. You'd do anything with him, understandably.
You left the crowded city behind, following the winding roads that led to hidden beaches and secret coves. The sense of freedom was intoxicating, the open road stretching out before you like an invitation to endless possibilities.
As the sun dips lower in the sky, casting pink and purple hues over the horizon, you find yourselves at a secluded beach. The golden sand stretches out before you, inviting and serene.
You sat on the parked Harley, Seonghwa standing in front of you. You run your fingers through his hair, feeling the soft strands slip through your fingers. The warmth of his skin and the sparkle in his eyes are all you need to feel completely content.
"Let's explore the island," you suggest, your eyes sparkling with anticipation. Seonghwa nods, taking your hand as you walk along the shore. The waves lap at your feet, and the sound of the ocean is a soothing symphony. Every step you take feels like a deeper dive into the magic of your surroundings and the deepening connection between you. The island is alive with vibrant colors and sounds, each corner revealing a new surprise, a new memory in the making.
"Let's take a picture here," you suggested, reaching into your sling bag for your phone. Seonghwa took a couple of pictures with you with the ocean and the sunset sky in the background. Then, you were taking videos of the beautiful scenery.
You switched the camera to use the front camera, talking about how much you loved mother nature. Seonghwa came up behind you and rested his chin on your shoulder so that he was in your video, too. His actions caught you by surprise, and you turned your head to look at him, your lips nearly meeting.
Seonghwa didn't straighten up, but instead, his eyes dropped to your plump lips that were glittery due to your lip gloss. He looked between your eyes and your lips before he leaned in to kiss you oh so gently, your phone recording the precious moment. You kissed him back with the same gentleness, turning your body more towards him so you could wrap your free arm around his neck. Seonghwa smiled into the kiss, causing you to do the same. He pulled away, his beautiful eyes staring into yours with nothing but love and adoration.
"I love you," he confessed for the first time, and the butterflies went wild in your stomach. You shared the same feelings as him, though you were afraid to tell him as you thought it was still too early in the relationship.
You giggled, and he mimicked you, grinning from ear to ear. "I love you too, Seonghwa," you said, pecking his lips. You completely forgot you were still recording until your arm felt sore. "Oh! Oh, it's still recording!" you stopped recording and went to your camera roll to replay the video.
"Send it to me," Seonghwa said while he watched the video. He kissed your head, sighing in content.
The two of you spent some quality time at the beach before continuing your little adventure on the Harley. You stumbled upon a small, local market, vibrant with colors and the scent of tropical fruits. Seonghwa buys a delicate flower crown for you, placing it gently on your head. The gesture is sweet, a reminder of the carefree joy you have found in each other's company. The market buzzes with activity, locals and tourists mingling, sharing stories and laughter.
You and Seonghwa sample exotic fruits, their flavors bursting on your tongues, a symphony of taste that perfectly complements the beauty around you.
The day turns darker, and the market's lights begin to twinkle like stars. You wander through the stalls, hand in hand, sampling local delicacies and marveling at the handcrafted jewelry.
One jeweler catches Seonghwa's eye, and he leads you to the display of sparkling gems. The array of necklaces, bracelets, and rings glint under the soft lights, each piece telling a story of craftsmanship and tradition.
Seonghwa grins, picking up a delicate bracelet adorned with tiny seashells and pearls. "For you," he says, fastening it around your wrist. "To remember this perfect day." The bracelet feels cool against your skin, a tangible reminder of the day's magic. You can't help but smile, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for these moments that seem too perfect to be real.
As night falls, you return to your beach-side hotel, where a bonfire has been lit at the beach. The flames dance and crackle, casting a warm glow over the gathered crowd. You join the gathering, dancing to the beat of the drums, your bodies swaying in sync with the island rhythms. The stars above seem to dance with you, a celestial celebration of your newfound love. The music, the fire, and the stars create an atmosphere that is both surreal and grounding, a perfect end to a perfect day.
"Being here with you in Hawaii," you murmur, leaning against Seonghwa as you sit by the fire, watching the embers float up into the night sky. "It's like a dream." The warmth of the fire and the cool breeze from the ocean create a perfect balance, much like the balance you have found with Seonghwa.
Seonghwa kisses your forehead, his arm wrapped protectively around you. "A dream we'll keep living," he promises. "Just you and I." His words are a soothing balm to your soul, a promise of many more adventures, many more perfect days.
And as you hold each other close, the promise of many more adventures to come lingers in the warm Hawaiian air, as endless and beautiful as the ocean before you.
The island, with its vibrant life and serene beauty, has become a backdrop to your love story, each moment adding a new layer to your bond. As you drift into a contented silence, the waves whispering softly in the background, you know that this is just the beginning of something truly magical.

Quick Notes On Hyrule & Its Neighbors In MoaH
I have plans to do full deep dives into all of the countries in MoaH eventually. I am waiting a little on it to get some spoiler stuff figured out how I want to handle that. For now, as a brief overview, here are the quick notes. All of the countries in MoaH are cultural amalgamates because Hyrule is a cultural amalgamate in canon, but I am still doing my best to research those cultures to makes sure that what is there is as respectful as it can be to the source.
Hyrule - Arthurian European medieval (working on emphasis for Cmyru origins over the British/French romantization, though there is some intentional contrasting of both) & Japanese, this combo is loosely based on canon
Farona - Slavic/Eastern European/Germanic, slight Norse
Holan - Chinese & Roman (this is an intentional contrast to Hyrule's European main and the Japanese secondary influence), Roman focused Mediterranean
Kohno - Oceania cultures like Maori, Hawai'i & wayfinding cultures (Kohno is the general alliance between a number of Pacific islander cultures)
Lyberic - Gaelic/Celtic, chiefly Irish for plot reasons (this is circling back on why I'm focusing Cmyru over Britain for Hyrule, but this is a 26+6=1 kind of plot)
Naydrana - Sami & Inuit cultures, generally subarctic cultures
Rahaal - Middle Eastern, North, East, and West African cultures (generally the Ottoman Empire). As a note, the Gerudo caravans are based loosely on Romani and Bedouin culture, though Rahaal has both nomadic and settlement based cultures in equal standing (generally nomadic cultures are respected as well in setting).
Teromac - Incan and, I can't do the accent so I'm including the modern term, Mexican/Aztec cultures
I am always learning. I'm sure I will get things wrong, and if I do, then I hope folks will push me to do better. I am not above revisions, I wanted to include a wide variety of cultures with their own full countries instead of small regions. Each of these nations get their own full book to explore their setting, and I want to do that right. I can't afford sensitivity readers, this is a fanfic and a no budget kind of project, but I always want feedback on how my representation is skewing.

Okay, we’ll admit we were among those hoping for an appearance from Special Agent Kensi Blye tonight, considering the episode was directed by Daniela Ruah, who played the badass agent on NCIS: LA from 2009 to 2023.
But we’re happy to have Ruah (who previously directed episodes of NCIS: LA) bring her knowing eye to helming NCIS. “It was the first time I was directing on ‘the mothership’ as we lovingly call it,” Ruah tells us in Case Closed, our NCIS aftershow. “It almost didn’t matter what came my way in terms of storyline, I just wanted to be part of it and work with the crew and cast of NCIS. I was received with open arms – like a wonderful, warm hug.”
Her passion for directing showed in this classic case-of-the-week storyline where the team chased down a petty officer’s murderer, who turned out to be someone a little too close to home. It also included a comedic through line about Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) trying to hide the fact that he sometimes cheated on his strict fitness regimen from his new temporary roommate, boss Alden Parker (Gary Cole). “Wilmer’s a funny guy,” Ruah says. “He brings a comedic timing. My job is just to capture it. Maybe I throw in a possible improv.”
Tumblr media
Sonja Flemming/CBS
Considering we last saw Kensi in the NCIS: LA series finale, discovering that her dream had come true, and she was finally pregnant with hubs/fellow agent Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen), we had to know if Ruah wonders as much as we do what her alter ego is doing now. As Ruah was sharing with us that she calculated Kensi’s due date and would always love the character she’d played for so long, she realized she was wearing an outfit she’d taken home from set that had been part of Kensi’s onscreen wardrobe – sweater, jeans, and signature boots. She cracks about how the writers might have worked Kensi’s motherhood into a script: “Do we now have an episode with Kensi fighting with a baby in her arms? I wouldn’t put it past her. Or is she out of the game for a couple months?”
Ruah also told us how she feels about the upcoming Paramount+ series (nicknamed) NCIS: Europe which reunites beloved NCIS couple Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo). “I think it’s the best thing ever,” Ruah says. “They had time to go off and do other things. These roles are so establishing for us who have been cast members on the show. For them to pick up these two characters that people fell so madly in love with — even I was shipping ‘Tiva’ —  it’s a wonderful idea, and I’m so excited to watch it.”
As for a Kensi and Deeks spinoff? “I don’t know that I could see one in the near future,” Ruah says. “Eric’s really busy doing what he’s doing and loving that. I’m loving this. I would never say never, but in the near future, that’s probably not on the table. It’s important for us to go and find ourselves in other things. The show was important and special to us, but it’s like leaving the nest.”
You’ll get to see Ruah’s behind-the-camera talents again in an episode of NCIS: Hawai’i coming up in April. Ruah, who does not appear in the hour, reveals that the plot takes deep dives into the characters and, “I think it’s the darkest episode they’ve ever had. The crime that’s committed and what we find out over the course of the episode…it’s not a pleasant story.”
Check out the video for more from Ruah about working with Sean Murray and LL Cool J; what Agents Kensi, Knight (Katrina Law), and Ziva have in common; and more of her thoughts on what it takes to direct a top-notch hour of TV. Hey, we may even see her pulling double duty at some point. Ruah tells us, “I am not opposed at all to showing up as Kensi in one of the NCIS shows.”

As NCIS surpasses 1,000 episodes, Rocky Carroll is reveling in the unique space the franchise has found itself in.
Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE, the actor, whose starred as Leon Vance since season 5, reflects on the franchise's new "incredible, rare era" and why he believes its been able to endure for so long.
"By the time I joined the show, it was already a very well-established show," he begins. "It was five seasons in. Before you know it, you look up, and it's 10 seasons. You're into a new decade."
Carroll says that one of NCIS' secret to success is its team of producers and writers haven't "allowed" the show and its characters to remain stagnant in a "certain year or a certain timeframe or at a certain age."
"The characters have grown and evolved," he explains. "We evolved over these 20-something years. We're not playing the characters with the same mindset and sensibility they had 20 years ago. They're older. All the characters have gone through their own share of peaks and valleys, death, loss, separations, all these different things."
Despite the changes NCIS and its cast has endured, Carroll notes that the procedural's characters are "still doing the same job" and working for the same agency. Even though some things have changed and some haven't, at the core of NCIS is it's purpose. Carroll says that former NCIS veteran, Mark Harmon, would always say, "The star of this show has to be the agency."
"It has to be about NCIS. If it becomes about any one person in particular, we probably would've been off the air 15 years ago," he adds.
On April 15, the crime-fighting franchise celebrated its 1,000 episode milestone.
In a statement exclusively shared with PEOPLE, Vanessa Lachey, who made history as the first female lead in NCIS history in its Hawai'i based spinoff series, opened up about what it's meant to be a part of the millennial milestone.
"It’s an honor to be able to add to this incredible franchise and to do it as the first female lead has meant more to me than I can ever express," she said. "It shows the incredible evolution and longevity that NCIS continues to give its fans."
Lachey added that getting to have a "family" both "across the generations as well as continents" is what she loves most about being a part of the NCIS universe.
"Not only with our cast but the fans as well," she continued. "The NCIS franchise is all over the world and it brings people together to watch and talk about, as well as provide comfort and entertainment, which is what you want when you dive into a show."

Four Coastlines
This is just my list of headcanons for a specific group dynamic: Florida, Hawai'i, Alaska and California. According to a CRS report, these four have the largest coastline in the states if we do not include tidal inlets. All of this to say, I'm brainrotting hard for these four's dynamics :'))
All four of them are chaotic. Don't let the face and mascot Florida fool you, all of them have the capacity for some kind of total mayhem and Florida is kind of proud of it
They are comprised of 3 extroverts and 1 introvert. They do wild things but they make sure that Alaska is having some kind of fun in the meanwhile
One day, they have a beach day, coming to a secluded beach where nobody really goes. Alaska prefers to stay under the beach umbrella while the rest go out to sea. California is trying to teach Florida how to surf but how well Florida is retaining it is up for debate. Hawai'i has definitely buried Alaska in sand before they left tho
Conversely, Alaska has taken them out to the tundra wilderness. California is prepared for the cold and keeps up with Alaska just fine. Hawai'i at least has experienced some kind of cold from her mountains but is definitely unused to it. Same goes with Florida. The only reason Florida and Hawai'i can keep going is sheer spite really. That and California was taunting them so they had to keep going
Beach Buds
FL & HI
Snorkeling is one of Hawai'i's favourite pasttimes. She gets Florida to join in since he also free dives a lot and it's better to have a partner to spot you. They tend to see which one of them could stay underwater for the longest time. Hawai'i always wins that competition
They explore the coral reefs just off the coast of the Keys to see the sights and colours of a thriving ecosystem and the bleached death for those left to the wayside
There's one time where they dived down for a nearly an hour without resurfacing and without any oxygen tanks whatsoever. It kinda freaked California and Alaska out because they're pretty sure not a lot of people could stay down there for that long
Ice cream. They go out for ice cream if they're on a beach and will exchange their favourite ice cream flavours so they could see the other taste it and judge it. No, Florida does not pick out the wackiest flavours just so he could see her wince at the taste, wdym
Florida has taken her to see alligators. She loved holding the babies because they're so small and so dangerous and holy crap is that their mother—
Two Extremes
AK & FL
The only reason Alaska remembers him is because he is the designated "fun" one. It's difficult to not remember someone who constsntly blows everything up with a smile on their face.
They get along because Alaska is one of the few people he actively doesn't mess with. He knows Alaska can and will throw the first punch if annoyed; and though he would love to see Alaska break, he's not about to find out. Alaska kinda appreciates it
Another way Alaska keeps remembering Florida is the way Florida shoves food into his hands. Mostly, it's just tropical fruits like dragonfruit, mangos and pineapples. Interestingly enough, Florida has never given him oranges
In recompense, Alaska started to give Florida some of his blueberries and ligonberries simply because he's confused as to why Florida keeps aggressively handing him fruits every once in a while and feels the need to repay him in some fashion
Hawai'i keeps helping Florida in giving Alaska tropical food — and then asked if Alaska ever had spiced foods and then it just kinda went downhill
Catchin' Waves
CA & HI
Surfing buddies. Hawai'i will drag California out to the beach so she could use her boards more, dammit
California hasn't had this much fun competing with someone — Hawai'i provides a good challenge that is hard to keep up but damn him if he won't stop trying
If there's a memorable event, like California absolutely eating shit by falling off his board, Hawai'i will pop in a nearby souvenir store to grab something from the store and hand it over to California so "he wouldn't forget". Likewise, California hasn't forgotten how Hawai'is hair got stuck in one of the doors for a long while and gave her a door keychain
California is pretentious and Hawai'i is aggressive. With these two, there's no Karen that can ruin their day (should they ever try, they'll find themselves running away with tears streaming down their face while the two high five for a job well-done)
She's the one of the few states that can fully call him out on his bullshit if he starts acting up — harsh glares and threatening gestures from Texas, he could take. Just not from Hawai'i. Her slaps hurt dude
Upper 2
AK & HI
Hawai'i tends to show Alaska everything and anything she's doing via Snap, Insta, Discord, Facetime, anything. That kind of friendship where Hawai'i has video and microphone on at all times while Alaska has his vid closed with push-to-talk on. Sometimes he has video on for that spice
Alaska gifts her small wooden carvings of her favourite animals and flowers every month, just to "put his skills to good use". One time, he gifted her a wooden hawaiian hibiscus, her state flower, for her birthday. Painted it yellow and made sure it has enough detail to seem real. She constantly has it out on display in her home, making sure that Alaska sees it in every video call
Hawai'i has a list of Alaskan facts bouncing around in her mind, will correct anyone about anything from Alaska. That is her bestie don't even try
He has indirectly learn some Hawaiian words from Hawai'i herself. Considering how many native languages he has on his tongue, it just seemed natural for him to learn another native language... just not one from his region. Definitely uses it to surprise Hawai'i
Golden Midnight
AK & CA
California rambles. A lot. So much so that the only one who tolerates it (barely) is Alaska and that's normally because California barged into his room to "get away from idiots"
Alaska tried kicking him out but ugh he keeps coming back
California likes to teach others so he just tells Alaska what it's like to live in the Lower 48. From memes to social etiquette to Taylor Swift albums and if Jefferson should just be kicked out. At first, he wasn't sure if Alaska was listening or not but after Alaska prodded him about folklore, he was more than happy to find out someone does listen
Sure Alaska's just kinda listening to California bc it helps with understanding Hawai'i but it seems to make the beanie guy happy so who was he to say anything
Disney Siblings
Alaska can and will use memes and lingo wrong just so California can do that strained smile that is barely holding back all his frustrations. It's funny
"So then I said—" "Purr, slay, keep going going" "... Alaska, what the fuck"
CA & FL
[Insert all canon interactions here]
"Why the fuck is your park so small? There's nothing to do here!" "Dude at least you can get inside the park at a reasonable time, how long are your lines and how high is your prices?!"
Florida calls California "Calcal" because there's "Norcal and Socal and since you're California, Calcal." California has long since accepted the nickname. Florida won't stop using it
California keeps a whole slew of insults and comebacks up his sleeve all reserved for Florida. California... may or may not use Florida as a sort of training grounds for when he actually needs a deadly insult (Texas or Gov) he can actually use it with no remorse
They have movie nights together. All of impromptu and no planning. Florida just tends to be in the living room watching Lilo and Stitch before California, after spending the whole afternoon in his office, pops down and gets enthralled by the animation again and BAM movie night. They shares snacks but Florida keeps stealing the sweets so California hogs all the popcorn bowls
maybe i'll make a part 2 of this idk i just know these four have my braincells

(have a little hawai'i au)
"I knew befriending you would eventually pay off."
"Like you would ever plan this far."
"Oh, you'd be surprised. I've been playing the long con."
Robin rolls her eyes, or at least Steve thinks she does. He can't really see because she's wearing her big sunglasses. The ones that cover at least half of her face. Robin says it's to keep the freckles at bay but Steve knows she likes how they make her look like a Broadway diva.
"Well, if that's the case, then I'll take you off the meal plan and ask for a refund."
Steve feigns shock, a move he's learned from Munson.
"You wouldn't dare."
"Try me, dingus. In fact, if you want to reinstate my good graces go get me a --, a --, something fruity."
"And I get to stay on the meal plan?"
"You have my word."
Steve rises up from his lounger and looks at the girl lying next to him. They've scored a nice set of loungers under an umbrella, near to the pool but not so close that they're under risk of getting sprayed at by all the kids playing in it. Tomorrow morning they're going to try to get to the adults only area, even if Steve has to wake up at sunrise to score a spot.
"Something fruity coming right up," Steve agrees and gets up.
He's immediately reminded of the sun and how merciless it is, as the skin around his shoulders starts feeling tight and hot to the touch. Robin had lathered him with sunscreen when they first got to the pool, but that was hours ago and Steve had gone swimming since. Oh well. It'll turn into a tan in no time.
He makes his way to the pool bar, tucked under an awning. It's tiki themed because of course it is, how else would the tourists staying here know that they are in Hawai'i.
Steve greets the bartender like an old friend. During the past four days he's been here often enough to get familiar with him.
"Rum and coke?" Makani asks and Steve nods. It's kind of embarrassing that the guy knows his order already, but he's on a holiday so fuck it.
"What about the missus?"
It's a game he and Robin are playing. They're pretending to be newlyweds because a) it's kind of funny and b) you get so many accommodations everywhere. It's no extra effort on their part either, they get mistaken as a couple everywhere they go.
Makani here obviously knows that it's all fake, but he's decided to play along. He thinks it's hilarious, makes him feel like a spy apparently. And who's Steve to begrudge the man of one of the few things that help him make it through his shift.
"She wants something fruity. And--"
"Expensive," Makani winks and gets to work.
The expensive part is also something Makani finds hilarious. You see, the thing is, that he and Robin are on this vacation because of Robin and her insane work ethic. She won the hire of the year at her new company, or at least something along those lines, and that awarded her and a plus one a two-week holiday in O'ahu in one of the company hotels, meal plan and drinks included. So they have made it their mission to eat and drink the most expensive shit on the menus, just to bleed the company dry. Robin hates his boss and is thinking of leaving, so she might as well go all out while she still can.
As Steve's waiting for their drinks he sees a little brochure on the table, left there by some former customer. He grabs it and shifts his glasses up to get an unobstructed view.
It's a brochure listing down all the activities at the resort. Some of them Steve's already seen, like the boat trips they keep advertising in the lobby as well as the scuba diving courses. The list here, however, is a bit more comprehensive and offers little blurbs of different kind of yogas, as well as aerobics classes, swimming lessons, excursions, surfing, reiki, you name it.
"There you go," Makani says and puts their drink on the bar. There's a little green umbrella in Robin's drink. She's going to love it.
"Oh, if you're thinking of doing some activities--," Makani says, noticing the brochure Steve's holding. "A friend of mine's doing both the yoga classes and some of the surfing. He's a sound guy. William."
"Oh, okay, yeah. Thanks. I'll check it out," Steve smiles and takes the drinks.
Steve thanks the man, hands him a tip and then goes back to their loungers, brochure shoved into the pocket of his swimming shorts.
Robin reaches for her drink and giggles in delight when she sees the little umbrella. She picks it off right away, and pins it in her hair.
"How do I look?"
"Tropical."
Steve watches Robin take a sip of her garishly orange drink. She makes a pleased little hum, and takes another sip. That's when Steve flings the folded up brochure at her, timing it perfectly and making her spill all over her swimsuit.
"Steve!" Robin sputters as Steve sits down on his lounger, stretching his legs in front of him. The shadow's are starting to grow longer, they need to shuffle the umbrella soon. Robin grabs the brochure, now sticky and glazed in orange syrup, pages sticking together.
"What's this?" she asks, while she's patting herself dry with the white hotel towel. The orange keeps bleeding around.
"Stuff to do. I feel like we could do something between all the lounging."
"You're such a fucking jock," Robin snorts, but takes a look at the offering.
"Makani said he has a friend who teaches yoga and surfing. That could be cool."
"You? Yoga?"
"Yeah, maybe not that, but the surfing for sure," Steve shrugs. Yoga's the one with the stretching and humming and stuff, right? So maybe that's not really up his alley. But surfing? That has always sounded so cool so why not give it a try when they're this close to a good beach.
He says as much to Robin, who just nods along.
"I want to try yoga though," Robin offers.
"Okay, you do yoga and I go surfing."
They share a look.
As if.
They burst laughing.
They spend the rest of the afternoon by the pool. It's too late to sign up for the day's classes anyway, and they're well on their way to tipsy. That can't be good when you want to balance on a piece of board.
Later, on their way back to their room, they stop by the front desk and sign up for surfing. Steve makes sure that their particular class is helmed by William, as vouched by Makani. The concierge smiles and assures that to be the case, complimenting them on their choice.
Steve feels good, eager to get moving after staying more or less stationary for the better part of the week.
It's not until he's standing there, tepid ocean water bracing his calves, that he comes to regret his decision. He's always had a good hand-eye coordination but balance is a different matter. He's going to make a fool of himself.
"Aloha. You here for surfing?"
It's weird how some things can bury themselves so deep into your subconsciousness that they seem to fade from view. Steve has not thought about that voice for years, yet hearing it now, with the gently lapping waves as a backing track--
"Billy?" he asks, feeling suddenly like he's breathing in heavy metals.
"Holy shit, Harrington."
The metals in the air drop all the way down to his feet, rooting him down there, in the shallow water. Steve wouldn't be able to move even if he wanted to.
Robin, who's been wading further into the ocean, makes a surprised sound. "William!"
Billy looks at her, eyebrows scrunched together.
"You're William," she sounds excited. She makes her way closer to the shore, splashing everywhere as he goes, including on Steve. "Makani told us there'd be a william, oh my god."
"Makani sent you?" Billy asks, sounding suspicious.
"Yeah," Steve sounds like he's been chewing gravel, throat all scratched up. "We were looking for stuff to do."
"Uhhuh," Billy nods, the air of suspicion not clearing up the slightest.
There's a silence. Or as silent as it can get on a resort beach around midday.
The fact that Billy's there feels like some sort foregone conclusion. Like Steve should've expected it, and he's an idiot for not doing so. Naturally he'd be in O'ahu, teaching surfing, what else was the guy to do.
He's always looked the part, at least. Maybe now even more so, with his sun bleached curls dropping past his shoulders and a ridiculous tan. Unlike back in Hawkins, he's also gained a little more bulk, something Steve's a little jealous of right away. Clearly the man's thriving in a way he'd never done under the Indiana sky.
Steve swallows past the gravel, feeling parched.
"So, surfing?" he asks.

The Revillagigedos Islands, 240 miles plus from the tip of Baja, Mexico. A Mexican National Park and UNESCO world heritage site. A diving bucket list. The Boiler was the second day of diving we did, but I made the video first because the thing the Revillagigedos are most famed for is the giant oceanic mantas. I've dived with mantas in Hawai'i, the reef mantas. The smaller mantas. The mantas there are basically being fed, with lights put in the water in a cove to attract plankton, which is manta food. The mantas are eating and you just happen to be there. The Pacific Ocean is huge. Diving at The Boiler, you hang off a precipitous wall, with amazing visibility. And the mantas come. They could go anywhere, but they choose to check out the weird bubbling creatures, circling around you and looking you right in the eye as they pass. Some of them will hang with you for the whole dive, just because they can. I wonder what they think we are? The Boiler would have been great dive site anyway - great wall, lots of pretty fish, ledges full of white-tipped reef sharks. But it's hard to stop looking at the mantas.

Hi, um just wanted to know if you have any info on Namaka (Namakaokahai), I only find the wiki info repeated on other sites.
Hey!
It looks like this may be a case where not much is known about a deity for one reason or another. Without looking into it too much, I wouldn't doubt if colonization played a role in it (as it usually does in USA territory...) but here are some general Hawaiian resources that mention her. Hopefully, the bits and pieces throughout these texts will help you find something <3
Here's the whole book "Hawaiian Mythology" by Martha Beckwith published in 1940. See also her References page which has a long list of texts and resources where she found her material, even marking which ones are from Hawaiian material.
Here is the Hawaiian Legends search index for Namakaokahai created by the Hawai'i state library maintained by the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Library which shows you references to her throughout different legends.
I did just the historical info I've found, as I don't know enough about the cosmology, practices, and religion of the people in Hawai'i to do an adequate search for modern practices. Maybe in the future, I'll do a deep dive into her once I've had the time to learn more! <:
If anyone else has any resources on this deity please send feel free to reblog or comment them!

Do you watch the Kate and Lucy story from NCIS: Hawai'i? If you don't, you totally should. They are way less frustrating than Maya and Carina is at the moment. The creatives/writers/producers are really leaning into the story for the fans much like Wynonna Earp did. If you do watch it, I would love to get your take. If you don't watch it, I think you should give it a try. I hadn't seen any of the NCIS or CSI franchises before diving into NCIS: Hawai'i.
I don't! I've never really been into NCIS/CSI type shows before but I've seen a bunch of Kate/Lucy on my dash and they do seem cute. I've wondered if I should start watching just for them but I just haven't yet haha. It does seem like the writers treat them well though so I hope that continues for everyone who watches sake! Maybe I will give it a try at some point!

NCIS: Los Angeles may have wrapped last year after 14 seasons, but fans are still getting a double dose of Daniela Ruah (who played Kensi Blye) on April 15: She guest stars in the franchise’s 1,000th episode, airing on NCIS, and directed the franchise’s 1,001st episode, with Hawai’i.
Ruah’s no stranger to being behind the camera for the NCISverse. She directed six episodes of LA (seen above) and one of the mothership earlier this season. “This [Hawai’i episode] was a bigger challenge than the other ones, I think, because it was an incredible storyline, and add to that, that it was a new cast and crew for me, but it was, oh my gosh, I had the absolute best time,” she raves to TV Insider. “I called my husband after day one. I was like, ‘We have to move here. I want to keep working with these guys.’”
In the aptly-titled “The Next Thousand,” when a Marine is murdered during training on the Big Island, the team tracks the suspect deep into the woods and discovers a disturbing secret. Below, Ruah talks about directing this episode, reuniting with her LA co-star LL COOL J (who’s a special guest star on Hawai’i this season), and more.
It’s wild that we’re on 1,001 episodes and counting of the franchise.
Daniela Ruah: I know! And by the way, I am so honored to have been given Episode 1,001. I mean, that’s insane.
When we spoke for one of the episodes of LA you directed, you said you like directing both action and character-driven moments and you get both with this Hawai’i episode. What excited you most about the story when you read the script?
First of all, the case itself really takes you in one direction, and then the episode about three-quarters in kind of flips on its head. … You take the audience on a journey in this episode, for sure.
The fact that we got to shoot in forestry and jungle areas, just the production value, the richness of that was really exciting. And then add to that, the sort of volcanic barren area that you get to contrast that with diving into Tennant’s [Vanessa Lachey] past is also really interesting. Showrunners Matt Bosack, Jan Nash, and Christopher Silber, who wrote the episode, did an exceptional job, not only with the story, but also the dialogue. And oh my gosh, our guest cast was absolutely phenomenal, and they carried this episode just as much as our main cast.
Tumblr media
The case takes everyone in different directions so you got to play with different pairings.
Oh, yeah, absolutely. I have to say, I think Alex [Tarrant] and Noah [Mills] are so charming together. Those guys really love each other in real life. So watching their chemistry, they’re so different. Alex’s character Kai is so zen, and he’s so connected to the island. And then you have Noah’s character, who’s not originally from that area. So that contrast is really cute to play with.
And then, yeah, Kate [Tori Anderson] and Sam [LL COOL J], I loved watching those two together, to be honest with you. The guy who’s so comfortable with himself and is used to using his gut to solve things as well as obviously facts and science, and she’s by-the-book and still learning to kind of relax into a case and just solve it with every tool you have, which includes your gut. So yeah, it was really cool to watch these pairings.
And then Vanessa was such a game player. She was so open to just diving into an intense emotional journey with these scenes that she had. Yeah, I love directing, and every time I direct an episode of something, I’m extremely happy. And this latest one just made me fall in love with directing even more.
You also reunited with LL COOL J and directed him again. And this episode really lets Sam be funny.
I know. I love it when Kate walks in and she’s got all these files and he’s got parfait. [Laughs] Yeah, working with Todd, it is like we never skipped a beat. It’s like no time had passed between seeing him at the end of last year on our show and seeing him now. I mean, in his own words, we’re homies. He’s my guy. It’s been 14 years of growing next to him and finding my stride as an actor and finding my stride as a director. And he’s been nothing but supportive and gracious and kind and open. Yeah, I mean, it’s Todd, it’s Uncle Todd to my kids.
Now that you’ve directed NCIS, NCIS: LA, and NCIS: Hawai’i, is there something you specifically enjoy about directing each one?
I love directing on our show because obviously it’s where I started. It’s the show where I was the most comfortable. I knew the characters, the tone, the rhythm, the crew, the cinematographer who I worked closely with. There were no surprises there. And I had a team of people who knew me so well that they weren’t going to let me fail, if I forget something because I’m new at it and it’s a lot of multitasking. No one was going to let me drop the ball at anything. So I really had that support. I would say that actually goes for all three shows, but that was just where my passion for it all began.
And then the mothership is an incredibly well-oiled machine. I definitely knew the cast from before, not just from crossovers, but our characters got introduced on their show. So I knew a lot of the crew members as well, and the producers and people who started off on set and rose up throughout the years into being into the production office. So there was a big comfort level there. And being a fan of NCIS, I had watched a bunch of episodes prior to that. So I just feel like I knew the characters really, really well, and that brought a lot of comfort to me as a director. I just felt like I was coming home. It was interesting. As soon as I walked onto their set, I was like, “I feel like I’m home.” And this wasn’t even my show.
And then with NCIS: Hawai’i, you have so many exterior scenes—the mothership is set in D.C. but it’s shot in Santa Clarita, so you actually have to be very careful about how you shoot exteriors, not to make it look like you’re in California, you have to make it look like you’re in D.C.. So there’s actually a lot of sets that are built and that you’re inside for. And in Hawai’i, it was more similar to our show where you’re actually shooting where the show is set so you can shoot as much as you want of the outside, and that really visually enriches their show. But also they’re in Season 3, so they’re still finding their characters, and I think it’s really, really fun to be in that process with them of finding new things that they haven’t done before. So, yeah, I just love the NCISverse, let’s face it.
