I know we all like to think about Haymitch being like a grandpa to the toast babies, but I raise you: Hazelle being like a grandma to them! Because tbh she's the more responsible one and experienced with kids between her and Haymitch, and she loves Katniss like a daughter.
But also imagine this from Gale's perspective. First white boy steals your girl, then he steals your MOM!!!!!!!

as someone from appalachia, i think about katniss’s father and his death a lot. i grew up in a coal town and i saw firsthand what a difficult and dangerous job that could be. but also how important it was to my people and culture.
i remember hearing the news stories of miners trapped in the mines. i remember when my best friends father got an awful injury after a rock fell on him. i remember that fear that comes with mine accidents, even if you don’t know the people inside personally.
i just think about katniss’s father a lot and how that accident must have shook the whole district. i think about the aftermath and the anxiety of the other miners and their families when they had to go back.
i think about what it must have been like for hazelle hawthorn when her oldest son had to go into the mines after having after lost her husband to them.
and i think about how the mines got shut down after the war. and how that is both good and bad. but that’s another post.

SECOND QUARTER QUELL II UPRISING AU
Ok, look. I’m obsessed with Second Quarter Quell generation and I have A LOT of head canons about them. And sometimes these head canons contradict each other, lol. Previously I showed you some of my illustrations about SQQ generation but it was always one particular AU (where they all are kinda friends/classmates?). And I think it’s time to show you another one that I also like. This is AU (or “head canon” since we don’t really know what is real and what is not) where all of them were part of revolutionary movement before the 50th Hunger Games. Some things are the same in both universes (Mr. Hawthorne and Mrs.Mellark are best friends in both, haha), some are completely different (Mr.Mellark and Mrs.Mellark were not in love in “uprising au” and had to marry for the sake of revolution after Mr.M/Mr.E partnership was broken, oh oh, that was super dramatic!). But they look pretty much the same in every AU I have in my head haha. So here are quick portraits of SQQ gen characters and their confident files from D13 before the 50th Hunger Games reaping day (everything went wrong after that, huh).
About Donner sisters. Peeta said that Mr.Mellark described them as “twins or something” and I interpreted this “something” as that they were not identical twins. Katniss was amazed by young Mrs.Undersee and Madge’s similarity but she didn’t have this feeling about Maysilee. So I think they looked like sisters but not super similar to each other. I mean, I’m a mother of identical twins, I know what I’m talking about lol.
These portraits are not perfect and were done quickly but I really tried 😅. Funny fact: overall I have more clear vision of SQQ characters than THG characters, haha (especially young Haymitch, Mr.Everdeen, Hazelle and Mrs.Mellark). Oh, and you have no idea how much time I’ve spent on these files lol. I don’t even know WHY I did it, because obviously no one cares, but this idea lived in my head for far too long. Ugh, I’m finally free of it. And now I need to return to my work and also main series uffffffff.
P.S. “agent Fox” is Haymitch’s girl, but I have no decent head canon for her
P.P.S. I don’t mention any names because I try not to be too attached to particular names for these characters (who knows maybe one day Suzanne will reveal some information and I don’t want to be upset lol)

wow the movies really did exclude every female peer Katniss was close with in the books, didn’t they?
like I talk about Madge a lot and obviously she’s the most important example, but Delly wasn’t there either. neither was Lavinia. that makes me so sad. Johanna was there, but their friendship wasn’t really elaborated on much in the movies, either.
now obviously she had Prim and she bonded with Mags, Wiress, and Rue before they died, as well as becoming closer with her mother, but they’re not her peers. (Hazelle isn’t Katniss’s peer either, but I wish she’d been in the movies, too. their relationship is so special to me.)
Katniss’s friendships/connections with her female peers (and other female characters in general) are so much more… profound than her relationships with male characters, or at least in my opinion. she describes female characters and her relationships with them so differently than she does male characters and her relationships with them. she values all of her relationships with other girls and women so highly. with Madge specifically (and maybe Lavinia, too), her admiration borders on sapphic.
but nooooooo apparently the love triangle was more important.

I heart Posy and am sad she was cut from the movies (Hazelle too)
But it's Posy, Gale's five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. “You're green. Are you sick?”
“It's a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lipstick,” I say.
“It's meant to be pretty,” whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes. Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, “I think you'd be pretty in any color.” The tiniest of smiles forms on Octavia's lips. “Thank you.”
“If you really want to impress Posy, you'll have to dye yourself bright pink,” says Gale, thumping his tray down beside me. “That's her favorite color.” Posy giggles and slides back down to her mother.
-- "Mockingjay", Suzanne Collins
I shall never forgive the Capitol for using Posy's voice against Katniss in one of the jabberjays in the arena. I don't know why it's worse than using Prim to me. I guess because Posy is a baby. It's just pretend torture but... why would you think torturing a five-year-old is totally normal?

What do you think about Mother's role in characters' life of The Hunger Games series?
Do you think there is correlation of their situation with their action?
Thank you :)
@curiousthg
What a great ask. I’m a firm believer in this too. What a mother/maternal figure does greatly affects the child, and the lack thereof. In the series, three mothers come to my mind: Mrs. Everdeen, Mrs. Mellark, and Hazelle Hawthorne. Thankfully, their children are big characters in the series so I can correlate actions and emotions to their mothers.
Starting with the obvious, Mrs. Everdeen and Katniss:
We do not know much about Mrs. Everdeen from before Mr. Everdeen died, but we can infer that she was a decent mother then. Happy even. Leaving her merchant life for love rather than status. When, Mr. Everdeen dies tragically, she is almost lifeless. Severely depressed and mentally withdrawn from the world around her. It’s this that drives Katniss to be the provider of family. Without the knowledge and skill of survival she would have never of made it as far as she did. Mrs. Everdeen is emotionally driven and so is Katniss. Volunteering for Prim. Singing for Rue. The nightlock berries. While Katniss has built a brick wall to hide her feelings from everyone, so has her mother. They just go about it differently. Then in Mockingjay, Katniss mirrors her mother regarding Peeta’s capture. I think a lot of people see Mrs Everdeen and Katniss as opposites, but really they’re just two sides of the same coin.
Mrs. Mellark and Peeta: While we really don’t have a lot of information on Mrs. Mellark, we know enough to infer that she was abusive. Unfortunately, we don’t know the reasons why she is the way and many chalk it to an unhappy marriage/life—and I agree. But, I want to focus on how much of opposites Peeta and his mother are. Peeta is this optimistic, self-sacrificing, charismatic, character. I think he learns this from his mother too, but in a backwards way. He learns what not to be. He does not want to be brutal. Does he have his outbursts of anger? Yes. Because he’s human. So he learns what not to be from others, while also seeing the good things in everyone.
Hazelle and Gale Hawthorne: This my least thought out, just because I never looked too much into it. Hazelle is a strong woman. A widow raising four children in poverty. She had to be strong. I feel like Gale saw this strength and made by it to help out his family. It’s altruism. Gale is a sacrificing character. Putting himself in harms way to save others. I trait he undeniably had learned somewhere, I just want to believe it’s Hazelle.
Thank you so much for the ask!

“Don't let [Hazelle] bring the kids.”
I can't tell if this line says more about Hazelle or Katniss.
it's in-line with Katniss' protective nature toward children. amid all the fear over Gale, she thinks, nearly unprompted, of his younger siblings and their terror at seeing him so torn up.
...but why would Hazelle think to bring them if Leevy's running in, saying Gale's been whipped, it's bad, get to the Everdeen's asap? like wouldn't their actual mom be on the same wavelength as Katniss in not terrifying them?
so I find it interesting to also take away that, for all her steadiness, maybe there's a small degree of naivety in Hazelle. Katniss doesn't yet know she's already seen whippings from before Cray and so maybe fears she won't know the severity but again, I am sure Leevy got that across.

If I had to ship two characters in The Hunger Games we never see interact, it would be Hazelle Hawthorne and Mr Mellark. Partly because they both deserve happiness (from limited information we know, at least) but also, imagine Gale finding out Peeta was going to be his step-brother

Do you think Gale’s mother Hazelle shared or even influenced his “radical” beliefs or was more like Katniss’ mother where she’d start with nerves at hearing her children speak their minds and attempt to quiet them?
Oh I think it was a proud discouragement.
I actually think Gale gets his fire from Hazelle and that when she was younger she had a similar need for justice.
But Hazelle is older now and has learned how to quell the fire because she has a family she wants to keep safe. And being outspoken is not safe.
So she agrees with Gale politically and knows there is a need for someone like him, someone to speak out and fight back.
She just wishes it wasn't him.

Okay now that hunger games is popular again I’m reminded of a small detail is nagging at me.
Hazelle Hawthorne, Gale’s mom, is never mentioned doing any mining. Like, we know women in district 12 mine. She surely was either pregnant or had just given birth when Me Everdeen died, so it’s understandable that at first she didn’t.
But mining brings in the most money. More than being a laundress. Gale gives up hunting time to pursue mining.
And we never get a reason why. Mrs Everdeen was an apothecary and after recovering from her cationic period became one again.
It’s easy to speculate that she needed to raise the kids or that mothers aren’t allowed to mine but I’m so curious as to why.

Haha! Bet y’all thought I would make Peeta, Gale, or even Madge next... but you were wrong! Here is the lovely Hazelle Hawthorne for y'all, in her everyday outfit and work clothes. The outfits I have her in don't show off her figure very well, but I see her being sort of apple shaped.
Custom Content Used: [eyes], [skin], [eyelashes], [freckles], [hair + bandana recolors], [body hair (slightly nsfw image warning)], [skirt (everyday)], [shirt (athletic), [stretch marks (tattoo)]
(Also, for those of you who aren’t sims players, I would have put the bandages on both of her arms, but the game will not let me.)

Conversation
Rory: I thought that was one of those rules that don't really matter! You know, like "don't run with scissors" or whatever.
Hazelle: That is a rule that matters!
