Why Sulli is one of my biggest inspirations

Hello i'd like to share some of the reasons why Sulli (aka Jinri) is one of my favorite people in the korean entertainment industry and why she is such an inspiring woman. I also provided links to several articles so you can read more in depth about certain amazing things she's done.

!Note that south korea is a highly conservative and misogynistic country. Especially in the idol industry, women are judged for every single little thing they do. Sulli however decided to lean against the standards set for female idols and always did as she pleased and what she thought was right. It's sad that only now after she passed netizens are being nice and supportive towards her. I'd like to share some of the reasons why she was such an inspirational woman and why she should never be forgotten!

1.Going Braless . Sulli didn't like wearing bras

and would often post pictures of herself while not wearing one. Of course this shouldn't be considered an issue at all but even western countries often still take offense to it fsm so obviously highly conservative korea was very unhappy about her decision and would send her lots of hate and call her vulgar names for it. She never stopped doing it though.

2. Abortion Rights

Sulli is pro choice! She celebrated South Korea changing their anti abortion laws which ofc was yet another reason for people to hate her.

3. Raised awareness on her public instagram about comofort women and showed her sympathy despite knowing she'll make her japanese fans upset by shedding light on it .

Japanese people often don't like to acknowlage their war crimes and felt very offended by Sulli for talking about it on her social media. Being the woman supporting feminist she is, she thought it was an important topic to discuss and posted about it regardless.

4. Openly shared her relationship

Dating is often completly banned for kpop idols altogether and only few dare to make their relationship public. Only in recent years have idols slowly starting sharing their relationship status. But back then idols tried their absolute hardest to hide that they're dating in fear of facing MASSIVE backlash, sometimes even receiving death threats. Yet Sulli openly posted photos of her and her now ex boyfriend on her instagram like any other normal person would.

5. Openly expressed her sexuality

making her own choices on when or how she decides to be sexy, taking all power from netizens sexualizing her against her will. This is a big issue in the idol industry, especially due to conservative views, a woman openly showing herself to be a self empowered sexual individual is looked down upon and seen as offensive. Netizens often called her mentally unstable, dirty, nasty and a wh*re for simply not wearing a bra or showing cleavage (which is quite scandalous in korea) or taking sexy photos as an adult woman! She talked about this and the double standards in depth in Persona:Sulli!

6. Defended herself

It's very rare for idols to stand up for themselves especially in such a blunt, forward way. Usually when idols have to apologize for the most mundane stuff, an official apology is issued through the agency but Sulli always took matters into her own hands.

7. Endured a massive amount of hate and ultimately left f(x) for the sake of protecting herself from hate and persuing her true artistic visions

She was constantly harrassed from her "attitude" to her looks, her views, her behavior and her talents.

8. Publicly discussed mental health, inlcuding her own struggles,

and based her solo debut around DiD. Mental Health was and still is very stigmatised in South Korea. While it's slowly changing, talking about such things back then was seen as highly controversial and people wouldn't be very understanding at all. Moreover netizens would think of idols to be ungrateful if they'd ever talked about their struggles.

9. Just overall always supported women and their rights. (girls supporting girls shirt, talked about being a feminist and wanting women to be equal on tv and defending fellow female idols).

Again, with Korea being a very conservative and sexist country, people sent her a massive amount of hate (mostly men) for speaking up about womens rights. This still happens to other female idols today when they declare themselves to be feminists.

10. Was unapoligeticly herself no matter what.

Always showing her personality and interests and voicing her opinions. She loved showing everyone how fun loving and free spirited she is . All she ever wanted was to be loved by others but she still didn't want to change her identity for others to do so.

11. Loved herself and her beauty

and would also voice it yet she was never arrogant or felt like she was better than anyone because she's pretty (Persona:Sulli)

12. She critizised the idol industry and the publics treatment towards idols (see Persona:Sulli)

13. Sent a low income student a feminine hygiene package for free

and planned to regulary send out packages to girls who couldn't afford to buy these products themselves. Unfortunatly she passed away before she had the chance to do so.

Theres so much more to Sulli. But these are some of the main points as to why I love her so much.

She endured the tremendous amount of hate for such a long time and despite feeling hurt she always remained true to herself. She struggled a lot but always continued doing what she thought was right and didn't apologize for simply living her life and being a feminist.

It all started by subscribing to the bubble for JYPnation; and honestly, you were very reluctant at first. Is this even worth my money? Will I really be communicating with my bias here? Oh my god, this ain’t some kind of scam right? You asked yourself these questions before actually paying. And here comes the exciting part: choosing the artist to receive. This wasn’t a hard decision to make, after all, you installed the app for him—for Hyunjin. 

After receiving the first message of greeting, the one where he thanks you for being bubble’s friend, you were already ecstatic at this moment. Oh, god, Hwang Hyunjin, I cannot wait for you to actually message me. And so, the magic begins.

“Hello, Y/N” 

“Y/N, Good morning”

“Y/N… Y/N… Y/N!!!”

“Look, I painted your profile although I know that’s not you.”

At first, you were sure he is just like this because he was supposed to do this, and most importantly, he might be doing this to everyone, and you shouldn’t be paying too much attention and affection to all his actions towards you; however, messages like these started with everyday texts, and the days turned to weeks, and weeks soon arrived to almost a month, which means you’re approaching the end for this subscription. When you subscribed to bubble, you planned on changing a member every month that passed by, not until Hyunjin messaged you something you could never decline. 

“Y/N~, I know you’re reaching a month from being with me, please don’t choose another member :(( I’ll be good please don’t leave me.” First of all, how did he know I’m planning on switching to another member? Second, why did he have to be this cute? And MOST of all, why is he doing and saying this to me??? This were the things you asked yourself after what he had said

You don’t know how things went to this miracle but the only thing you can do is thank god for allowing you to subscribe to bubble, you’re an agnostic by the way, because if you didn’t, then maybe you won’t be laying in this fluffy bed with a long haired blonde beautiful man beside you. 

Now, this might sound like a dream come true, it is, of course; but dating an idol has its fair share of pros and cons. Greatest of all pros is that you don’t need to collect all his photo cards anymore because he sends you his selfies everyday. Also, the fact that he updates you of his schedule every time? A heavenly feeling of assurance. You can honestly state a list of pros covering a whole yellow pad paper back-to-back, but you’re not going to dwell with that too much. For cons, first and most exhausting of all for you, your relationship has to be hidden. Not that it’s a secret for both your family and his, and stray kids, but having to be extra careful around everyone is the hardest. You want to tell the world that you’re dating the one and only Hwang Hyunjin and that he loves you and you love him more than anything else; but that’s just how you can imagine things for now. Next, you are in a long distance relationship. He’s in South Korea and you’re in New Jersey, USA. Oh, what a nice 12-hour time difference. 

Having to be beside him right now is a rare moment, first time even, for the both of you. He can’t go to you since it will be a dead giveaway to everyone that he is indeed seeing someone in New Jersey. So, since your anniversary is nearing, a few months back, you started saving money so that you can be with him, which leads you to this situation—hugged by the most beautiful person on earth you could ever lay your eyes on. He looks even wonderful now that he’s sound asleep, you feel peaceful with his presence. You wish for this moment to last forever, you’d give up everything just to have him stay by your side; but you know this isn’t something you can really hope for. 

Being an idol has its pros and cons. Doing a job they truly love and enjoy, but having eyes around them any time of the day, anywhere they go. Making their fans happy makes them happy as well, but also being robbed off of their freedom. People expect them to be perfect while also prying on their private lives. 

Dating ban wasn’t on his contract, at first you thought there would be no problem because of that, but why would JYP allow his artist to date someone like you? An average person who isn’t even a top student in the least. How can he allow Hyunjin to date someone who isn’t the prettiest and popular in some ways? This is why your relationship is hidden, because if people find out about this, their boss would not even protect him about your relationship, and you don’t want to be a burden to him and the group. 

You hate that you’re thinking like this despite all the constant reassurances Hyunjin has given you. He’s the sweetest person you know and you’ll ever have. You didn’t notice the tears welling up in your eyes not until a drop had rolled down the side of your eyes, to the bridge of your nose and to the pillow you were lying on. You also wouldn’t notice that Hyunjin was already awake if he didn’t suddenly sit up and hold your right cheek with his palm.

“Why are you crying, darling?” You softened with the pet name. You have always adored him calling you that.

“Nothing, love, just thinking about how lucky I am with you,” you said and smiled softly at him.

He’s lying down again and pulling you closer into him. Your head is now pressed against his chest, you can even hear the beating of his heart. In moments like this, you’re in the most fragile state; you want to be protected more than you want to protect him.

Although muffled, you heard clearly what he said after a short comforting silence. “I’m the lucky one here. I got to date my crush and now we’re celebrating our one year together.” 

“I love you, Hyunjin.” At this point, you don’t even understand why you were crying.

He pulled away and cupped your face. “I love you too, Y/N. Don’t cry, my love, please.” He cooed and kissed your forehead. Down to the tip of your nose. Then your philtrum, and finally, your lips. It was a comforting one. The most wholesome kiss he ever gave you. You’ve always felt amazing in his arms and his kisses, but this one made you feel very safe with his touches, you’d never want to break the kiss. 

As he pulled away from the kiss, he reached for the drawer of his bedside table. It took him a little while before he got what he was looking for. He sat down and pulled you with him, making you two now sitting up on the bed. He held your hand and pulled it up so that it was on eye level for the both of you. On his right hand, there you saw what he was rummaging for in the drawer, it was a ring—a promise ring to be exact.

“Happy anniversary, my darling. I’m sorry that we’ve reached a total year together having our relationship in this situation. I may not be able to tell the whole world how much I love you, but I hope you know that I genuinely do,” now, you’re both a crying mess.

“I’m sorry if I ever made you feel insecure and small for keeping our relationship a secret, but please know that my heart holds you dearly and that I am really proud of you. My gift for you is this ring, this will hold all my promises for you that soon we’ll get to be a normal couple just like everyone. Soon, I’ll be able to hold your hand in public and we won’t have to be scared of getting caught. Until then, please let me hold onto you for as long as you’d allow me.” You wiped his tears, while yours are pouring heavily all the way to your neck.

“May I put this on you?” He asked. He didn’t really have to ask but you nodded. Smiling as he slid the ring on your left hand’s ring finger. It fits heavenly, like it was specially made for you.

“Happy anniversary, my lovely Y/N. I love you forever and always.” He kissed you again, the same loving kiss a while ago, and then proceeded to pull you into his arms, snuggling his head on the crook of your neck.

“I love you, Hyunjin. Always in all ways.” You said as you allowed yourself to melt into his arms.

Who would have thought that, what was a reluctant decision at first, will bring you to this—to him.

This might not be the perfect love story you expected, but you’re grateful you get to spend and write every chapter of it with him, and you don’t plan on asking for more than to be with him for the rest of it.

after her mom died she had no idea what to do with her life because she still loved sports but didn't know how to make that her career and he could go back to school and become a physical therapist or a pe teacher or something blah blah blah

but it didn't take her long to decide that she actually wanted to achieve her mom's dream of being a musician to honor her

in the meantime tho she's a personal trainer at her local gym! and she might pick up some other jobs too we'll see.

she is pretty much a Music Newbie, she learned how to play guitar from her mom and she always loved music but was never a singer or anything

she decided to go down the kpop path because becoming an indie musician or whatever seemed way more overwhelming than becoming a trainee LMAO like "ok all i have to do is get signed to a company and they'll teach me everything right???"

she is still a sports girlie. catch her at the gym even when she's not working but also on the tennis courts and at the pool and probably in a volleyball league and

she got a dog AND a motorcycle after her mom died to cheer herself up LMAO but it helped! she loves miso (the dog) and the unnamed motorcycle because she cannot decide on a name for it even though it's been a year or something

an interview with lucy lamb — a talk about couchsurfing, australia and the afterlife

today's thorns of the future guest is lucy lamb, a rising star of modern post-crystal castles electronic music, inspired by early 2010s fashion. lucy is an artist from melbourne, australia. she describes her music as "alt, indie, electronica, dance-pop and witch house with elements of darkwave". lucy is a producer and a singer, as well as a lyricist. her first ever release was a single titled "hello", which was self-released by lamb through distrokid.

thorns of the future: how did you start your journey with music?

lucy: I’ve always loved making music ever since I was a little kid. Started singing lessons when I was like 7 years old, fell in love with Miley Cyrus which was the reason I wanted to become a singer lol. Started making music when I was about 16, and released my first EP when I was 18.

thorns of the future: what are some of your favourite songs right now?

lucy: My favourite songs right now are Canary Wharf Drift by Bassvictim and Your Face by Wisp.

thorns of the future: who inspired you to make music?

lucy: Literally Miley Cyrus in the Hannah Montana tv show I was so obsessed.

thorns of the future: what is your craziest experience during a live show?

lucy: I played in this club in Tokyo which was a wild experience for me. There was no stage so I was just on the danceflooor with the crowd and kind of just walking around like weaving through everybody with my microphone which I definitely wasn’t used to.

thorns of the future: what software do you use to make music?

lucy: I use Logic Pro, I’m still learning how to use it properly though.

thorns of the future: what's "the other side" about?

lucy: The Other Side is about crossing over to the after life pretty much. It talks about being scared to die and the things you would miss. It can kind of be interpreted as being about any sort of transition from one thing to another, any sort of change, but I think the obvious one (especially when watching the music video) is the transition to death. It’s just a fictional sort of story if you will.

thorns of the future: are you planning any new releases?

lucy: I have 3 singles coming out in the next few months all with music videos. ‘Bed of Snow’ is coming out on September 20th and I’m so excited for it. All the songs are of course dance/electronic but I’m leaning a little bit into like indie rock elements in two of them, with the third being like a full commitment to witch house.

thorns of the future: what's a country you would never travel to?

lucy: Probably North Korea for obvious reasons.

thorns of the future: tell us about the things you enjoy most, except for making music.

lucy: I love travelling that’s my second favourite thing in the world after music. I went on a year long trip around the world in 2022 which was absolutely amazing. I went on a 5 month road-trip around Australia earlier this year too. It’s a little hard to travel like that while also doing music so I think for now I’m taking a break from travelling. I also love animals, especially weird exotic ones. The weirder they look the more I love them because it just makes me thing how weird and amazing the world is.

thorns of the future: have you ever met anyone famous from the electronic scene? who was it and how was your experience with them?

lucy: I can’t say I have yet. Someone I’d LOVE to meet is the guys from Air. They’re a huge inspiration for me and one of the most talented electronic duos I know.

thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?

lucy: The riskiest thing I’ve done was probably when my friend and I did couchsurfing through Europe. There’s this app called couchsurfing where you can arrange to stay at strangers’ houses for free while you’re travelling. We were pretty nervous every time we stayed with someone because there was always the question of like what’s in it for them? Why are they letting random people stay at their house for free? The people we stayed with sometimes turned out to be weird and kind of put us on edge but a lot of the time they were really cool people too so. We were literally on such a tight budget we had no other option but to do our accomodation this way.

thorns of the future: are there artists you truly hate? why?

lucy: I don’t really hate any artist in terms of the kind of music they do like I respect all genres and whatever kind of music you wanna make even if I don’t like it. Like it’s got nothing to do with me so I don’t really care enough to HATE any artist.

thorns of the future: what is the best live show you've ever been to?

lucy: There’s this experimental electronic duo from Melbourne called Npcede. I played a show with them and they were really great. It was a guy singing and a guy playing bass. They both had like really amazing stage presence and interacted with the crowd so much. The lead singer started playing the electric guitar with a violin bow halfway through as well I loved it. I also have to mention seeing the band Film Noir in Berlin, they’re an indie rock band and the lead singer’s energy was so compelling it made the whole thing sooo immersive and fun.

thorns of the future: name one thing you really hate about australia.

lucy: Honestly I think Australia is a great place to live I think it’s beautiful, it’s diverse and it’s very liveable. If I had to say one thing I hated about it I guess just how far away it is from everything lol because it’s always so hard and expensive to travel anywhere.

thorns of the future: tell us about the weirdest thing that has happened to you as an artist.

lucy: The weirdest thing that’s happened to me as an artist is probably when someone randomly approached me on the street when I was in Tromso, Norway, and told me they recognise me and love my music. Was superrrr weird for me because Tromso is a pretty small town with not many people and it was just really random to meet someone who knows me there.

Notes: This part takes place way later, towards the end. I wanted Reader to have a nice candid moment with ARMY, bc I love this fandom a lot, y'know? It needs a lot of revision so that it's less rambly and dense, but I'd like to keep the honest and frank atmosphere I've got going on here. It'll probably change a lot by the time I actually get to this part of the fic, but I'll keep something like it in the final product, I'm sure.

You crouch down to come face to lens with the camera in the hallway and wave tiredly.

“Hello~” you drawl out in a whisper, giving a small smile, “The boys have treated me to so many yummy Korean foods, so, because this is our last morning before we travel back to Seoul, I am up stupid early,” You pause to pull out your phone to show the glaring 5:15am, as if the pre-dawn lighting wasn’t already evidence enough. “So I make them my family’s traditional pre-travel breakfast feast!” You give a near-silent cheer and jazz hands to the camera before heaving yourself to your feet and ambling your way over to the kitchen.

As you set about gathering up your ingredients and finding your required utensils, you make sure to look around and spot all of the kitchen cameras. You hadn’t really had much purpose in here before, and when you had there were usually camera directors about to be mindful of instead of the mounted cameras you were taking advantage of now.

One of the cameras happens to be angled toward an ideal space to do most of your prep work (probably on purpose) so you point to it and make your way over.

“I don’t like cooking alone.” you tell it in a low, conspiratorial tone. “So you’re gonna be my buddy and listen to me babble.”

That being said you really only whistle lightly to yourself as you finish collecting the ingredients and lay out the stuff for your first dish - a simple fruit salad. When you begin slicing up the first apple, you finally start speaking to the camera as promised.

“Now, I know I’m not one of the members, but I hope ARMY will be fine with whatever this segment looks like anyways,” You start softly, “BTS may be my ult bias group, but ARMY is my ult bias fandom, you know? It might be weird to say as ARMY myself, but I’ve never seen another fandom quite like it.” You take a breath and pause your chopping, flexing your wrists and popping your knuckles while you contemplate.

“ARMY was welcoming from the start, for me.” You continue, “Heck, someone gave me a link for a BTS101 guide at some point! That was actually super helpful, It made catching up with content and understanding memes a lot easier.” you smile at the memory, grateful still to the person who’d given it to you. “It’s a very warm and close community, and very open and accessible to new people. That’s pretty rare, in my experience.”

You switch tracks now, beginning to explain what you’re making even though you’re already halfway done. No one claimed you were a pro at this entertainment stuff. “I’m making a fruit salad right now. It’s easiest to start with because after I put the lemon juice on, i can just put in in the fridge and get it out of the way.” You inform the camera. “My Ma says it’s the most important part of this spread because it lets us pretend any of it is healthy.” You laugh softly at yourself as you dice up your chosen fruits.

You’d been kind of surprised you’d been able to find everything you wanted, given that you weren’t entirely sure which fruits were available in South Korea. There had definitely been a few you’d never seen before when you’d gone shopping, and you were curious to try, but you were going for traditional today so you’d just have to hope you could find them again at an Asian market at home.

You fall into a bit of a daze as you wash fruits, chop them up, and dump them in a bowl on repeat. The silence you fall into is broken only by the occasional whistled tune or soft hum from you. You’re broken from your trance when it’s at long last time to sprinkle in the lemon juice and sugar and stir it all up. You speak to the camera again as you give your arm a workout trying to mix everything.

“If I really wanted to make this how my grandma does, I’d add this mix of cream cheese and whipped topping that she uses. It’s really yummy, but I think it’s a bit too much like desert for today.” You cover the bowl when you’re done and place it in the fridge.

hello ! thanks for sending this to me, i just finished reading the thread and i just want to clarify things for the people seeing my pro-Palestine posts on my account along that one ask regarding yunjin. i do not hate, as in hate hate yunjin, as in over-the-top hate or anything like that because there are bigger things or topics happening that we don't know or aware of and the media hasn't tackled yet, but i hope this situation won't bring haters (actual haters who just want to shit on others just because) and start influencing other people or kpop stans, in general, to hate on the group without proper research.

also, from the thread, yes, even though sb korea has a different group from sb international, idols have a great influence on the fans because well, they're idols. there are some people who want to feel or be like them just because, especially some fans that will go overboard with it. also ! i've been hearing that sb being not on the boycott list anymore, but even though that could be real, don't stop boycotting sb because no one, even me, knows if it's real or just a way to manipulate people into doing the opposite

PARK JIMIN

he was seated in the middle of the crowd, yawning every once in a while due to how long the performance line ups were taking. if he were truly being honest with himself, he was only here to see the latest debut stage.

sure he could always see it from the comfort of his own home, rather than be seated with other people who possibly don't care about the performances at all. however he needed to see this particular stage in person to meet one of the members from this new girl group.

the space went dark as the stage lit up with colorful lights and five female silhouettes began to step forward, a spot light lit each of them up and that's when jimin saw her.

she was beautiful, not in the standard type of beauty but her own category. the group made elegant and large moves across the stage as they displayed their voices for everyone. by the time the whole show was over, along with introductions, jimin quickly made his way backstage so he could get a glimpse of this girl close up. his members weren't far behind as they all snickered at the desperate boy.

"i think i could've had a lot more movement here, ya know?" Y/n frowned as she chugged down her water. the new group was standing in the middle of a lobby. a staff member came over quickly and pat sweat off her forehead, another was fanning her with a random paper. "i think you did pretty well, especially for a debut stage, you looked like a pro out there.. at least thats what i think," jimin spoke as he casually strolled up behind the woman.

Y/n turned around with a shocked expression, nearly dropping her water. "oh my! aren't you park jimin of BTS?" jimin only chuckled at the shocked face of the woman. "yeah that's me.. uhm," he scratched the back of his neck as he sensed his members coming up behind him.

"you're Y/n, correct? i couldn't remember your last name, my apologies!" namjoon quickly came to help out his, obviously nervous, friend. "that's me alright, it's alright sometimes i can't remember it either with how unique it is," a laugh escaped her lips as her attention dragged to the taller male. "so, uh, my friend here came to ask you for your contact info.. in case you need any help navigating Korea," namjoon elbowed jimin and with that jimin took his phone out slowly, anticipating a rejection.

"really? i have been getting lost lately so that'd be lovely!" a bright smile appeared on her face as she gave jimin her contact info. he received it with a wide grin and a deep blush.

the TV was displaying a rerun of an award show that was hosting a promotional stage for a new girl group. they were popping off well with all sorts of fans. the screen was finally displaying the new group as their intro began. tae was seated comfortably on his couch with a bowl of ramen and a glass of water.

as the group continued their performance with much grace. one of the members caught his eye. at the end of the performance they all introduced themselves, however tae was intently paying attention to one of the members only. so, he did some research and found their youtube channel that was started only last month. he found a video dedicated to getting to know the members.

"hello [fandom name], it's me, Y/n!" the woman on the screen was breathtaking. her hair was well done in every clip, her skin was glowing, her smile was beautiful and her body was another story. tae was hooked, he looked into anything about her. he found her age, height, where she was from, her favorite food, hobbies and favorite places to visit.

he even at some point messaged the Bangtan gc about her.

he just so happened to stumble across a pop up stage performance with colorful lights. the crowd wasn't huge but not small either, so he stepped through the crowd to find a good spot to see what was going on.

"busan are you readyy?!" a beautiful woman approached the center of the stage and introduced herself as the groups official leader and lead vocalist. the other members went on, and introduced themselves as well.

despite all the other members introducing themselves as well junkooks eyes were set on one woman in particular. The woman who introduced herself as the leader. her skin was amazing. Her features were unique and unlike the beauty standard, her outfit was flashy, and her voice was soothing.

her style of dancing and her tone of singing, drew him in quite quickly. however, just as quickly as the mini concert started it ended, but he was so entranced with the woman that it took him a minute to realize that the concert was over or what he assumed was in concert.

jungkook was a bit unsatisfied with just seeing her up on the stage and preferred to see her closer. so he tried to put his superstar status to use and get backstage, or at least in the VIP section if they had any.

eventually he found his way to the backstage, and saw her standing inside of an open tent with staff surrounding her. she was gorgeous even though she was covered in sweat. with a deep breath he marched forwards and tapped her shoulder, disregarding the staff asking him how and why hes back stage.

"oh my..! aren't you jungkook of BTS? how are you here?" the woman, whos name is Y/n, beamed at him. "yeah thats me!" he blushed a bit and rubbed his neck. he began fiddling with his lip ring out of nervousness as she began questioning why he came back stage. " 'm sorry, uh, i just thought you were gorgeous and a good singer and dancer too! you know, like, good at your job-" jungkook's rambling was cut short as a staff member soon stopped by to let Y/n know of their soon departure.

"thank you thank you but i'm kinda in a time crunch right now.. is there anything you needed before i gotta run?"

"uh.. can i get your number?"

Korean War: The Forgotten War and why it matters.

Hello, and welcome again, my amazing readers to another history blog lesson. Last time we talked about the black death and how it changed Europe as a whole, now we talk about the Korean War.

When It comes to wars in the 20th century post ww1 that people talk about, It's mostly ww2 and the Vietnam War that people talk about. In ww2 Americans celebrated the end of the war. It was a momentous victory and many soldiers came back as heroes in post-war America.

Two decades later, Vietnam was the opposite. The Vietnam War was a humiliation for any American serving in the war. They were shamed and hated. the deaths of a lot of Us soldiers tend to have that effect.

But there was one war that wasn't loved or hated, It was just right there. The Korean War. To say that this war was forgotten would be an understatement. It might just be one of the most forgotten wars in history.

Often today, it's never taught. The one time I learned about it was when I was 12 years old, That was it. But millions died in a footnote in history including some 33,000 Americans.

And we are left with the ramifications of the end of the conflict. So what was the Korean War? Why does it matter? Well, strap in, and let me tell you about the forgotten cold war proxy war.

The Buildup To War

This whole thing starts before ww2. Korea was once independent before being annexed or taken over by Japan in 1910. The Koreans were subject to awful treatment by their Japanese overlords for at least three and a half decades.

By 1945, the Japanese empire was defeated through a combination of two atomic bombs, a Naval war, and the Soviets invaded Manchuria. The United states and the Soviet Union( Russia) proceeded to divide Korea amongst themselves.

It was divided and held between Soviet and American occupation with both deciding to divide it by the 38th parallel.

The Un attempted to give free elections to Korea, However, the Soviets blocked it and boycotted it real quick, the reason being that it would be unfair. By December 1945, Korea was stuck in a hard place between both sides. They both agreed to a trusteeship that would last for five years.

There was an attempt however to establish a new provisional government in the American zone, Known as the People's Republic of Korea, or PRK. The issue was they were pro-radical communists. The American military quickly smashed its legitimacy as a government and outlawed the Prk.

In the north, the Soviets hired a man and veteran activist called Cho man sik and saw that he could be a leader for a potential Korea.

Cho however disagreed with the Soviets and only worked with them under his own terms, which annoyed them. The final straw came after he refused to sign the trusteeship. As a result, he was removed from power and sent under house arrest before he disappeared.

This was Stalin after all, so guess what happened. Cho's leave of absence convinced the Soviets to find a new leader for a new Korea. This new puppet was Kim il sung, a former. communist guerilla leader.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or what would become known to the world as North Korea was born.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of Korea, the elections were held and the presidential candidate, Syngman Rhee came to power. Thus south korea was born in 1948

Rhee was a hardline anticommunist and proceeded to have the military hunt down and kill suspected communists across the south to suppress uprisings. About 100,000 people were killed in the south for being suspected communists.

Things came to a head in 1950. Kim il sung believed he could invade South Korea and so proceeded to meet with Stalin to ask for equipment and support for the invasion.

Stalin was wary at first, but eventually, by April, He gave Kim his support. However, he made it clear that he would not send Soviet ground troops if a conflict broke out as to avoid conflict with the Americans.

North Korean forces Numbered around between 150,000 and 200,000 troops. 10 infantry divisions were organized, one tank division and one air force division. 210 aircraft as well as 280 tanks were prepared for the invasion of South Korea.

The South, by comparison, was nowhere close to that. By the day of the invasion, they only had around 98,000 soldiers, 0 tanks, and a 22 aircraft force, Most of which were trainer and liaison aircraft.

On the 25 of June 1950, North Korea launched an invasion of the south. The Korean war had begun.

The course of the war.

The North Koreans easily smashed their way into South Korea. The S South Korean military or Rok military had virtually no tanks or anti-tank weaponry to speak of. They resorted to blowing up a bridge in the Han River, killing many refugees. Seoul, the capital fell on the same day, the 28th of June.

The South Korean military had been reduced to just 22,000 troops from its original force of 98,000 in the spend of five days. While the North Koreans were consolidating their success, The Us was deciding whether or not they wanted to get involved or not.

They were concerned about the fact that if Korea fell, the communists could easily follow the same line with other nations, domino theory, and all of that. China had fallen a year earlier to communism, while half of Europe was encompassed under the Soviet sphere.

At the same time, they were also concerned about escalating the situation in Korea into war with the Soviets, believing that Europe was more of a concern than Korea.

Eventually, however, they agreed to send a Un peacekeeping force from several different nations, led by the Us in order to support South Korea. The generals were tasked to rebuild a force that was a shadow of its ww2 self.

Meanwhile, Us forces in Korea were fighting the Kpa, or the Korean people's army, for control of the south. The battle of Osan was one instance when task force Smith was fighting the North Koreans and highlighted the failures of poorly trained men and equipment such as bazookas and recoilless rifles, which were unable to penetrate the t34 tanks the North had.

Task force Smith retreated from the battlefield, but not before succeeding to hold off the enemy.

The battle of the Pusan perimeter was a battle where Un forces managed to hold back the North Koreans for a long time, with the air force and navy's amazing overwhelming superiority, And the grit of the un troops, they succeeded in holding the perimeter long enough for reinforcements to come.

During the battle of Pusan, efforts to relieve the defenders were underway. The Battle of Inchon however was a turning point in the un's favor. While I would like to go more in-depth about Inchon, All you need to know is that the landings were a success and they destroyed the North Korean forces there.

As a result of the landings, the defenders of Pusan were relieved. On September 15th, they broke out of Pusan. That same month the Un forces launched a counteroffensive into the south and managed to retake lost territory.

On September 22, 1950, Un forces fought for Seoul In what was known as the second battle of Seoul. The battle was a Un victory and Seoul was freed from the north.

Wanting to stop any future incursion from happening, the Un decided to eliminate North Korea once and for all by invading the North. They succeeded in capturing most of the north by October, as Kpa resistance crumbled. It finally culminated in the capture of the capital Pyongyang on October 19th, 1950.

Regardless, They continued to pummel the Kpa and pushed them all the way back to the Chinese border. And this is where things take a huge turn backward.

Chinese Involvement in this Conflict

As the Un pushed up north, China was starting to become increasingly wary of an approaching American force, which was pummeling a fellow communist state that they supported from the start. Mao Zedong, the leader of China, feared that America might not just stop at eradicating communism in Korea and that China might be the next one on the block.

After a series of emergency meetings that lasted from the 2 to the 5th of October, China decided to send in troops to support their ally. After enlisting Stalin's support, the Chinese were ready with about 200,000 troops. On October 19th, 1950, Chinese soldiers crossed the border in secret and across the Frozen Yalu River.

Wave after wave of Chinese soldiers crossed down the mountains and borders, Overwhelming the Un forces and forcing them back. They successfully retook Pyongyang as well as North Korea from the American forces.

Enraged so much that the Chinese had done this, the American commander Douglas MacArthur began looking for a way to defeat the Chinese, One of which was atomic weapons. Truman had said earlier at the beginning of the war that all options were on the table, including the bomb.

However as the months went by, This decision slowly changed. By 1951, However, Macarthur wanted to still use atomic bombs on China. Eventually, Macarthur's requests for the bombs were too much for Truman, and on April 11, He fired him and replaced him with this man, General Matthew Ridgeway.

Meanwhile, the Chinese and North Koreans were rapidly advancing and had taken Seoul again. However, Ridgeway hatched a counteroffensive known as Operation Thunderbolt. The counteroffensive was a success and they once again took Seoul back into un hands as well as South Korea.

However, from this point forwards, The war became a back-and-forth between the Chinese and North Koreans vs the Un and the South Koreans. Un forces were unable to get to Pyongyang while Chinese and north korean forces were unable to reach Seoul. Any gain both sides make was just taken back by the next offensive.

Now while the war on the ground was a stalemate, the war in the air was a far different story. This was the first war in which jet fighters played the central war in combat. No longer are piston fighters the main fighter plane, Jets are the new rage.

Fighters such as the ww2 era gloster meteor, the f-80 shooting Star, Mig 15, And especially the f-86 sabre became the standard jet fighters in the Korean War. This was a decade when fighter jets were still new and looked exactly like this.

See what I mean. North Korea was also subject to a huge bombing campaign that left thousands dead and injured. It still ranks among the highest countries that have been bombed. both sides continued to fight,

But eventually however by 1953, both sides were tired of conflict. After gaining no strategic advantage for several years, The combatants agreed to an armistice that was officially signed on July 27, 1953. The fighting was over.

The aftermath and conclusion

With the fighting over, Both sides created the Korean demilitarized zone, or Dmz for short. The Zone still exists to this very day.

With the war over, there was no cheering in the streets for Korea. Most people barely even paid attention to the war at all. Soldiers went back to their civilian lives. the 1950s continued, that was it.

North Korea was somehow better off than the South, With better health care and a better standard of living in the South, which is weird considering it's North Korea we are talking about here. But by the 80s, It began to stagnate and became a poverty-stricken place with concentration camps and famine.

South Korea went through a lot of regime changes and had a poor economy and living standards than the North. However, by the 1980s, South Korea's economy increased big time to the point of being one of the richest economies on earth.

The Korean War also had the highest causality civilian count than ww2 with approximately about 3 million civilian causalities in the entire war. 1.5 million North Koreans fled the country during the war. Millions of Koreans from both the North and South died during the war.

33,000 Americans were also dead, as well as 114,000 Chinese.

Ironically even though it's called the forgotten war, It's still ongoing. There was never an official peace treaty signed, meaning the Us is still at war with North Korea. The North in many ways sees the war from all those decades ago as a constant part of their ideology, with generations born to hate the Americans.

And a constant paranoia that the war may start again, which explains most of their craziness and general hostility towards other nations that aren't allied with them.

Even though the Korean War may be remembered today as a forgotten war, It's a war that impacted the lives of two nations and has defined generations of young Koreans. And it will continue to define future generations, as we still live with the consequences of a small conflict that began on that fateful day on 25 of June 1950.

she'll be the first to admit that she's pretty nervous for filming this show on her own for the first time. she's been to a few shows on her own now, but she's never been the host of a show and having the audience's interest ride on her shoulders.

it's a lot to take in, but she's prepared a script and she thinks that the first episode is a bit extreme but she thinks she should probably start with a bang right?

it starts outside and she greets the camera with a bright smile, feeling very nervous but also very excited for the activity today.

"hello everyone!" she greets, having decided she wouldn't really have an intro but had already come up with an outro for the episode. hopefully it was cute enough that it would take and alize would like it?

she's not sure.

"it's crystallis's selene, but i'm sure our alize knew that already right?" she grins, waving at the camera and then quickly getting back on track to do what she needed to do.

"do you guys recognize where we are today?" she assumes that the editors will add in a large background shot of the area that they're in, but she thinks it's pretty obvious either way.

"you're right! we're at nami island!" she cheers, clapping her hands and she's glad she had spent the entire ride out here memorizing the lines she had pre-written for the show. "do you know what nami island has?"

she goes over the different things nami island is famous for, keeping it all relatively brief but wanting to educate any foreign fans that crystallis had that hadn't had a chance to visit korea yet. hopefully she would be a good tour guide in that sense, if they wanted to see any sights and also do some fun activities.

"but, the thing i'm here for today is ... drumroll please ...!" she hits her hands against her thighs and makes the drumroll noise with her mouth before turning to the side with a bright smile.

"the zipline course!"

the rest of the intro is filmed when she's at the ziplining area, receiving information and relaying it back to the camera. she's glad they had managed to get this as one of the things she could do in an episode since it's been on her bucket list for a long time.

she lets the experts explain what they're going to do before she suits up, shooting a nervous but excited grin and a peace sign at the camera as they fit her with a helmet that has a go-pro on it for close-up shots of her going down the zipline.

she's pretty excited, considering she's not scared of heights so she's not too worried about this.

she talks a little bit more as she waits for her turn before she gets onto the zipline.

"ready?" she asks, looking into the camera and holding up a thumbs up before pushing off and sliding down the line, letting out cheers of excitement the entire time.

once she reaches the bottom, she looks around for the cameraman who's already filming her and she rushes over excitedly, jumping up and down. "that was so fun!" she cheers, really playing into her maknae image and letting herself enjoy the activity she had done.

somin discusses the experience a little bit, having a feeling there were going to be some unattractive angles of her excited yells from when she's on the zipline but she can't even be mad. she's used to being a meme at this point that she thinks she might as well fully embrace it.

"thanks for watching. i hope you enjoyed you daily dose of some ssom today!" she says excitedly, cupping her face in a flower pose at the 'ssom' part since it was her nickname and winking. "tune in for the next episode! byeee~" she waves, covering the camera before turning back to the director.

Hi. It's so nice to find a like-minded political friend on this cursed site. It's so rare to find someone with such a favourable opinion of North Korea. Even in my country (Russia! Former Soviet Union!) people who seemingly don't consider themselves pro-western capitalists shudder and whisper fearfully - "bloody closed gulag". I don't even want to know what the star-spangled centre of capital thinks in this case about the poor country, covered with sanctions and false propaganda, but which has survived. I don't understand my compatriots, their older generation. When I ask them what life was like in the Soviet Union and what their attitude to the Western opinion about it is, I hear "Oh, well, life was not easy, but there were a lot of good things and everything the West says is lies and nonsense". In that case why do you now believe their nonsense about the same closed country? It's a disgrace. Eh, I would love to visit North Korea and see for myself. 🇷🇺🤝🇧🇾🤝🇰🇵🤝🇨🇳. Fuck capital-imperialism.

What is it like to live in America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, anywhere? I'm going to be honest, America is pretty decent. Sure, it's not perfect, everything has places to improve in. But I don't think I'm kept down by my gender. I don't think I'll be illegally locked up by the government, and hell, America's free speech is so well-protected that you can safely cuss out Police without being legally in trouble. (silently looks at China's Hong Kong Protestors, at North Korea, at Russia, at the Middle East that kills those who are LGBTQ, at Africa that still engages in genitalia mutilation). I'm not saying that we necessarily have the right to get involved in another culture, but I'll leave this comparison. A mere what 50 years ago, America thought Racism was still okay, and what like 150 years ago or 100 years or whatever ago we still thought slavery was okay. What is okay in one culture at one point in time is accepted as wrong in another point in time. Why are we allowed to nitpick America, which is a pretty good place all things considered, but we don't call for cultures which are consistently denying human rights and lives to examine and change their behavior when it comes to such crimes against humans?

Why do you believe in your faith? Why are you Christian, Catholic, Mormon, Jewish, Buddhist, Athiest, or any belief? I'm in a complicated religious place. I believe there is some higher universal cosmic being, but I think they look at us like we look at ants. Funky, fun to light on fire with a magnifying glass, but barely worth any thought. I just don't agree with the idea that there is a god out there that gives a shit about us, but I also don't think there isn't a higher being out there who had some hand in the world as it is.

Why are you an optimist? A pessimist? A realist? I would call myself a realist with a dose of anxious pessimism. Again, Anxiety, and abuse has created in me a struggle to be 100% blindly optimistic about anything.

Less about raising women up, more about tearing men down. The "Strong Female Character has no flaws, makes no mistakes, and needs no man" makes me unironically immediately hate whatever story has the trope. Women have flaws, they make mistakes, and most women would say that even if they don't need men, they would like to have one in their life. Does the strong female character not need her father? what about a brother? Or a male friend? Is she truly self-sufficient enough that she doesn't need anyone? Or how about the fact that the Strong Female Character is only ever one type of Strong, which usually feels like the female "Stoic Hero with physical strength" archtype. All this to say, the Radical left has complicated my political position.

Why are you pro-choice? Pro-life? Radical left has completely ruined pro-choice for me, because they go after women who choose not to abort, to keep the baby. Pro-Choice implies you support people having the choice to choose either one without reprimand or scolding, and without undue harm. :/ Also, when I was younger, I wrote an essay about Abortion, and though I lost the essay, I remember two poignant things: The methods by which abortions are done (none are pretty, all are so unbelievably fucked up), and that too many abortions from one woman can leave her completely infertile. Any medical process that leaves you infertile and isn't known to have that side effect feels ick to me. What if it's the wrong time in her life but then she later wants kids and can't have any later? How fucked up is that. I do think abortions should be permitted, especially in cases of rape, incest, or where the baby/mother would die to go through childbirth. But if you just don't want to get pregnant, get the implant, use condoms, and practice safe, sane, and consensual sex. Don't put your reproductive organs at risk if you do want children later in life. And look up the methods of abortion. My information was from 2013, so it might be updated, but it might not have updated. It was some fucked up shit.

Why are you a feminist? An anti-feminist? I want equality between men and women, which I honestly think we got quite a bit of equality (the wage gap I think doesn't take into account that it's the average of all men v all women. Compare men to women in the same field. That will give you a more accurate account of wages and gaps). If a man is abused, he's ignored or ridiculed, if a woman is abused, she's supported and the man demonized. If a man rapes a woman, his life is torn down. If a woman lies about a man raping her and is found out, she gets a slap on the wrist for destroying his life. Google it, there's a bunch more fake rape accusations than you think there are. Women are just as nasty to fellow women as men are. If a man and woman divorce, a woman is almost always given 100% custody of any children, unless very extreme circumstances come into play, or it's a fair divorce like my dad and mom, where mom got my sibling and my dad got me, and we each visited the other house every other weekend. But I don't want those double standards. i want the arbitrary Male v Female standards to fade away and judge by facts, not what genitalia the people involved have.

Why do you love certain people, certain groups? What about them makes you so happy? Why? Why do you despise certain people, certain groups? What about them makes you so mad? Why? I assume this is pointing towards being for/against cops, anti-semitism, racism, or sexism. I don't generalize groups. I don't think all of X group is Y, because that is boiling everyone down to one label they have. I want to judge people by their actions and what I know of them. I don't want to assume all men are rapists, or all women are victimized, or all blacks are criminals. Those are all false, and when you make that narrative, you'll look around and see the narrative you craft. I don't judge you for whatever you believe, look, or dress like, though if you wear a shirt of a game/show I like, I'll happily comment on it, and if you behave in a way I find annoying/mean, I'll just avoid you, but it won't change my perception about the group of people, though I have strong thoughts about activist groups that have done more harm than good. (MeToo, with the Cancel Culture that assumes a tweet from a decade ago 100% represents your current beliefs, that jokes don't exist, and you can never change or be better and can only be confronted aggressively and cancelled; BLM, with their violent protests that destroyed so many cities across the country. Both cases had good intentions in their goals, but the way they went about achieving it, or even just in not restricting things [Cancel Culture] ended up causing more harm to the cause in question. Remember #BelieveWomen? You wonder why fake rape accusations are happening? It's because our society with MeToo was primed to just believe women without questioning their story, without properly investigating. And fake rape and abuse accusations only make it harder for real victims to come forward and be believed. Good intentioned, poorly executed.)

All this to say, I try to approach everyone I meet and everything I do with an understanding there is more nuance to the situation than a simple Black and White, a simple "you either are with us or against us" mentality. I never want to remove a seat for all people from the table just because history has had it that our seat was removed. My piece of advice for everyone is: Treat others how you want to be treated, and never assume you know exactly what a person went through. I told a lot of what I experienced, and I didn't expunge a very large amount of my story, as a lot of it is identifying for people who know me well/knew me at a particular point in my life. You, who have heard a lot of my story, do not know everything about me. Likewise, imagine all the people with stories like mine (this is to everyone, not just the owner of this tumblr) that haven't told you, or that you don't know. Better to err on the side of caution and treat others as you'd like to be treated than potentially negatively affecting people for no reason. And generalization is the death of nuance. By boiling people down to their unchangeable characteristics, like their gender, sexuality, or skin color, you're limiting that person to a caricature of what you think of those characteristics. Caricature's, even well meaning ones, are never a good basis on which to judge people. Better to treat every person with blinders on to their skin color, gender, and sexuality, yes? I'm not saying those characteristics don't affect their life (I have characteristics that can affect my life myself), I'm just saying that people shouldn't be judged by those characteristics.

Also, I applaud you, OP, for being willing to be so open to other stories, and I apologize for the heccin essay I just sent you, lol.

Mentioning Cancel Culture, I reccomend reading this post! I found it very enlightnening and it does a good job explaining how Cancel Culture is such a bad thing!

With number 7, you are right but it's also a bit more extensive than that. I stated at the beginning that I want to hear from everybody, I want to learn about as many people's stories as I can, and that includes people who aren't commonly liked or are seen as bad people. That includes; homophobes, racists, and/or people who think stuff like incest is okay, to name a few. I'm not saying I agree or will agree with anything and everything I hear, but I want to know why. It's good to hear from good people, but I want to know the wants and motives behind people society has deemed wrong and immoral as well. Or maybe that's just psychology nerd in me talking.

One thing I think is important though, is that the world isn't black and white, and neither are the people that live in it, everything is all in shades of grey. No one's perfect, but no one's entirely a monster either.
