    She had taken to wearing sunglasses to hide the shadows of her eyes and donning long sleeves, pants, and boots so as to hide her wounds behind a veil of perfection. There was nothing, though, that could be done about her hollow cheeks or the tremors of her hands. Her nails were still growing back so she had elected to wear gloves that Orion had bought her, fine and gentle -- lovely for the horrors that they hid. Despite it all, though, she had found a semblance of a routine and was beginning to tediously piece her life back together. The occasional doses of ambrosia that Ivan (beautiful, devoted -- heartbreakingly so) was able to provide her. Absentmindedly, her thumb rubbed the crook of her arm, where Henry’s needle had sunk deep. Or, just deep enough. 
    Even so, there was still satisfaction that she could take in this all. Though Henry had won the battle, there was no doubt who between the two of them would declare victory in this war. Already, she was beginning to sharpen her teeth, was ready to sink her canine’s into someone’s throat -- but she would be more careful this time. She wouldn’t let her passions carry her away, no, she had learned her lesson and learned it well. Rafaella was going to take her time with these vengeance, just as she would methodically and systematically dismantle the Montagues from within. Then she would offer the ashes that would be left to Juliana and Vivianne. The first step? Making sure that Henry had ruined himself as much as he’d ruined her. At the very least, shaken her. Orion had, after all, promised her that she was not ruined, and she never doubted him. 
    “Zia Zhang,” Rafaella greeted, a smile on her lips as she peered at the woman who had cared for her as a child -- when she was running rampant with Henry, Hector, and the others. “I was so glad to hear from you -- I hope Damiano wasn’t too upset by my sudden leave. Although I know Henry was. He must miss me.”

ฉลอง 10 ปีกับสุดยอดไฮไลต์ในเทศกาลดนตรีแจ๊สนานาชาติ – TIJC 2018
ก้าวเข้าสู่ปีที่ 10 แล้ว สำหรับงาน Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) โครงการเทศกาล ดนตรีแจ๊สนานาชาติเพื่อการเรียนรู้ ซึ่งจัดขึ้นโดยวิทยาลัยดุริยางคศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ในปัจจุบัน
เทศกาลนี้เป็นการรวมตัวของนักดนตรีแจ๊สจากทุกสถาบันทั่วประเทศ รวมไปถึงนักดนตรีจากต่างประเทศที่ให้ความร่วมมือในการเข้าม���แสดง ร่วมจัด workshop และ master class เพื่อการพัฒนาไปข้างหน้าอย่างยั่งยืนของวงการดนตรีแจ๊สในประเทศไทย
เทศกาลดนตรีแจ๊สนานาชาติเพื่อการเรียนรู้ครั้งที่ 10 หรือ TIJC 2018 นั้น จัดขึ้นในวันที่ 26-28 ม.ค. 2561 ณ วิทยาลัยดุริยางคศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ศาลายา ส่วนประกอบหลักๆ ได้แก่การแสดงดนตรีแจ๊ส (Jazz Music Performance) กิจกรรมด้านการศึกษา (Jazz Education Activities) การแข่งขันแสดงเดี่ยวดนตรี แจ๊ส (Jazz Solo Competition) และ การถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้จากศิลปินต่างชาติ (Jazz Camp) ความพิเศษ ของงานในปีนี้ จะได้พบกับกิจกรรมต่างๆ ทั้งการแข่งขันเวิร์คชอป และการแสดง รวมแล้วมากกว่า 100 กิจกรรม โดยไฮไลต์สำคัญของการจัด Jazz Camp คือ นอกจากวง Will Vinson Quintet จากนิวยอร์กจะมา ขึ้นเวที จากการรวมตัวของศิลปินแจ๊สขั้นเทพ 5 คน ได้แก่ Will Vinson นักแซ็กโซโฟมือฉมัง Mike Moreno  นักกีต้าร์มือโปร Keven Hayes นักเปียโนฝีมือจัดจ้าน Orlando Le Fleming มือเบสระดับพระกาฬ และ Henry Cole มือกลองความสามารถสุดล้ำคนหนึ่งของยุคสมัย ศิลปินทั้ง 5 ยังมาร่วมถ่ายทอดประสบการณ์กับกิจกรรม Jazz Camp
นอกจากนี้ยังมีวง Alfredo Rodriguez Trio จากคิวบา รวมทั้ง วง Claudio Filippini Trio และ Enrico Zanisi นักดนตรีจากประเทศอิตาลีมาร่วมแสดง โดยความสนับสนุน จากสถานทูตอิตาลีประจำประเทศไทย ที่สำคัญยังมีการแสดงดนตรีซึ่งเป็นการบรรเลงร่วมกันระหว่างวง Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) กับวง Pomelo Town จะนำบทเพลงพื้นบ้านของภาคเหนือ ได้แก่เพลงน้อยใจยา และเซเลเมา ที่ครั้งหนึ่ง วง Pomelo Town ได้นำมาบรรเลงในรูปแบบแจ๊ส และในครั้งนี้บทเพลงดังกล่าว จะถูกนำมาเรียบเรียงใหม่ สำหรับวง Symphony Orchestra โดย ดร. ณรงค์ ปรางค์เจริญ คณบดีวิทยาลัยดุริยางคศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัย มหิดล  ซึ่งจะเปิดมิติใหม่ในวงการการประพันธ์ดนตรีของไทย ที่ผู้ฟังจะได้รับฟังผลงานไทยในลักษณะของ Jazz Symphony  เป็นครั้งแรกในประวัติศาสตร์
ในส่วนของกิจกรรมอื่นๆ ที่น่าสนใจก็คือ การแสดงของวงบิ๊กแบนด์จากทั่วประเทศ และจากประเทศเพื่อน บ้าน อย่างเช่น The Big Band of Penang จากมาเลเซีย I/D Trio จากอินโดนีเซีย และการต่อยอดความรู้
ไปกับกิจกรรม Workshop และ Master class ทั้งในด้านการแสดงดนตรีการประพันธ์และเรียบเรียงดนตรี การควบคุมวงดนตรีและการอำนวยเพลง จากนักดนตรีและบุคลากรดนตรีชั้นนำ ที่ได้รับเชิญมาร่วมเทศกาล
ดนตรีครั้งนี้ รวมถึงการแข่งขันแสดงเดี่ยวดนตรีแจ๊ส ซึ่งมีศิลปินระดับโลกมาร่วมตัดสินในรอบสุดท้าย
โดยแบ่งออกเป็น ๒ ประเภทคือ Type A: Open Division ผู้ชนะเลิศจะได้รับเงินรางวัล 100,000 บาท และ

Art Movements is a weekly collection of news, developments, and stirrings in the art world.
Around 150 anti-immigration protesters gathered in Dresden to disrupt the unveiling of Manaf Halbouni‘s “Monument,” a public sculpture dedicated to the people of Aleppo. The sculpture, which consists of three upturned buses fastened together with wire, refers to a photograph of a barricade built on the streets of Aleppo in 2015. According to Christiane Mennicke-Schwarz, the artistic director of the Dresden Kunsthaus, the opening was disrupted by chants of “traitors” and “get lost.”
Sotheby’s filed a second lawsuit over the sale of a group of Old Master paintings that it believes to be forgeries. The auction house filed a lawsuit against art dealer Mark Weiss and collector David Kowitz in order to recover the profits of the 2011 private sale of “Portrait of a Man,” which Sotheby’s attributed to Frans Hals at the time. In a statement, Weiss said that he “intends to contest the claim vigorously.”
The Louvre Museum was reopened less than 24-hours after a man attacked a French soldier with a machete. An Egyptian Interior Ministry official identified the attacker as 28-year-old Abdullah Reda Refaie al-Hamahmy.
German prosecutors announced that a 36-year-old Tunisian man arrested on terrorism charges is also being held for his suspected involvement in the 2015 attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis.

American hedge fund manager Tom Hill rejected a £30.7 million ($38.4 million) matching offer from London’s National Gallery for the purchase of Pontormo’s “Portrait of a Young Man in a Red Cap” (1530), a decision he attributes to the fall in the pound’s value. The UK government is likely to refuse a permanent export licence as a result. An export bar was placed on the work in 2015.
Hundreds of artists, dealers, critics, and curators signed an open letter opposing President Donald Trump’s executive order banning non-US citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.
A report by Bloomberg identified Oprah Winfrey as the former owner of Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II” (1912). Pesquisar quadrinhos: uma tarefa ingrata e desanimadora

Costumo reclamar com meus amigos do Universo HQ sobre a falta de material biográfico correto e fontes erradas, não apenas em português, mas em inglês, francês etc.
Existem centenas de livros sobre quadrinhos, em várias línguas, mas muitos deles incluem erros de datas e nomes, ou repetem informações já caducas, que há anos foram atualizadas, ou se limitam a materiais de referência de apenas uma origem (por exemplo, autores estadunidenses) e acabam sendo cúmplices na omissão dos outros.
São poucas as obras precisas e criteriosas que se pode consultar sem ter que confirmar as informações com outras fontes.
Esse problema sempre existiu e já era aparente para mim, mas essa dificuldade se cristalizou durante mais de uma década produzindo artigos para o Universo HQ. A situação se agrava quando preciso noticiar algo mais penoso, como o óbito de algum artista ou escritor.
Se o autor for brasileiro, existe outra agravante, a quase total falta de biografias de quem fez e faz quadrinhos no País.
Resolvi listar alguns exemplos encontrados nos últimos meses.
Ao contrário do que está escrito na maioria dos livros teóricos sobre Tarzan, a estreia do personagem nos quadrinhos não aconteceu em 1929 – junto com Buck Rogers. Na verdade, isso aconteceu em novembro de 1928, na revista semanal inglesa Tit-Bits, quase dois meses antes do lançamento nos Estados Unidos e Canadá. A informação não é “secreta”, está no livro Hal Foster, de Brian M. Kane (Vanguard Productions, 2001).
Logo após o anúncio dos indicados ao Eisner Award de 2014, surgiu a informação que o colorista Frank Martin era brasileiro. Sou leitor de East of West, a revista que lhe valeu a menção, e gosto do trabalho dele, mas não sabia que era meu conterrâneo.
Fui alertado pelo desenhista Mike Deodato e entrei em contato para fazer um perfil do artista. Frank Martin, na verdade Francisco Martins de Souza Júnior, foi bastante simpático e me enviou todas as informações necessárias.
Ele não é o único brasileiro a usar pseudônimo em seu trabalho para as editoras estadunidenses – uma prática sugerida por muitos agentes e estúdios que fazem o meio de campo para essa produção.
Mike Deodato (Deodato Taumaturgo Borges Filho), Roger Cruz (Rogério da Cruz Kuroda), Will Conrad (Vilmar Conrado) são alguns outros exemplos dessa prática.
Os três volumes da boa enciclopédia de Henri Filippini, Dictionnaire Encyclopédique des Héros et Auteurs de BD, cada um deles com quase mil páginas, também apresentam alguns erros, dentre eles, o fato de creditar alguns artistas brasileiros, como Roger Cruz, como norte-americanos.
Mas existe outro problema com o uso de pseudônimo. Na Era de Ouro (dos quadrinhos nos Estados Unidos), isso era prática comum para editoras pequenas que queriam se passar por grandes, e usavam alguns artistas com vários nomes para esse fim.
O inverso também ocorria. Alguns artistas inventavam pseudônimos para trabalhar secretamente para uma editora concorrente.
Existe um pseudônimo bastante peculiar nos quadrinhos: Charles Nicholas.
Era um nome de uso comum de vários artistas e foi usado em três ou quatro editoras diferentes, como a Fox Feature Syndicate e a Timely Comics (futura Marvel Comics).
Na Timely, o nome Charles Nicholas foi usado por Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski (que também utilizava Nick Karlton) e por Jack Kirby  (que teve diversos pseudônimos no começo da carreira, como: Jake Cortez, Jack Curtis, Jack Curtiss, Bob Brown, Teddy, Ted Grey, Curt Davis e Fred Sande).
Kirby também assinou trabalhos com esse nome na Fox. Outro artista que usava esse pseudônimo foi Chuck Cuidera (Charles Nicholas Cuidera). Mas a documentação confusa e escassa não facilita a pesquisa do assunto.
Aliás, sobre Kirby, nem mesmo uma informação óbvia, como a data de nascimento do artista pode ser considerada simples. Em algumas fontes – muito possivelmente por um erro tipográfico – aparece o dia 25 de agosto de 1917, embora a maioria dos livros mais recentes (como a biografia escrita por Mark Evanier) aceite o dia 28 de agosto de 1917 como a data correta.
Particularmente, acredito que 28 de agosto de 1917 seja a correta, pois uma busca usando o nome e número do seguro social do artista em sites especializado sobre esse tipo registros batem com essa informação.
Para complicar, no caso de nascimentos no início do Século 20, os registros eram manuais e muitas vezes podiam ser de difícil leitura ou até transcritos para o meio digital com erros. Sem falar que, naquela época, não era incomum a pessoa nascer em uma data e ser registrada dias depois sem muita confusão.
Outro problema é a falta de arquivos e coleções definitivas. Veja o caso do personagem Namor. Até 1975, se acreditava que ele havia surgido na revista Marvel Comics # 1, cuja data de capa é de outubro de 1939.
Em 1975, porém, foram descobertas cópias da revista Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly # 1 (que só possui nove cópias “sobreviventes”), de abril de 1939, com a mesma história do Namor, mas com apenas oito páginas. A HQ publicada em Marvel Comics # 1 possui quatro páginas extras.
Essa revista trouxe outra curiosidade à tona. Algumas de suas edições são conhecidas comoPay Copy, pois nelas Lloyd Jacquet (o responsável pelo estúdio Funnies Inc.) anotava os valores pagos para os artistas pelas histórias, incluindo datas e números de cheques.
É por isso que se sabe quanto Bill Everett e Carl Burgos ganharam para criar o Namor e o Tocha Humana. O autor recebeu 83,25 dólares pelas oito páginas de Namor em MPFW # 1; e a quantia chegou a 96 dólares depois que ele desenhou mais quatro páginas para Marvel Comics # 1 (as 12 páginas finais de Namor).
Burgos recebeu 128 dólares pelas 16 páginas do Tocha Humana (de Marvel Comics # 1).Esses valores são de 1939.
A revista Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly foi cancelada antes da produção dos outros números. Apesar disso, foram produzidas capas para as edições # 2, # 3 e # 4 do título.
A descoberta de Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly invalidou diversos livros sobre quadrinhos publicados na década de 1970. Esse tipo de problema continua existindo, uma vez que poucos (mas eles existem) livros teóricos são reimpressos com correções.
Outro exemplo, mais recente, de um problema relativo à pesquisa é o tratamento da origem da personagem Isabel Kane, da Marvel Comics, que ganhou superpoderes em Avengers – Volume 5 #1, de fevereiro de 2013, e se tornou a heroína Smasher (posteriormente, Messenger).
Na revista original, seu nome era Isabel Dare e seu avô se chamava Dan. Para quem não sabe, Dan Dare é o nome de um famoso herói de quadrinhos das revistas inglesas, criado em 1950, por Frank Hampson.
A Marvel retificou a homenagem na edição encadernada da série. Atualmente, Isabel se chama Isabel Kane, e seu avô era Daniel “Dan” Kane, mais conhecido como o herói da Era de Ouro, Capitão Terror (Captain Terror), que surgiu em 1941.
Fica a impressão de que são realmente poucos e raros os livros nos quais os pesquisadores podem confiar. Parece que cada informação, por mais ínfima que seja, precisa ser verificada em duas, três ou mais fontes. Não é possível apenas replicar o que está nos livros e enciclopédias de HQs.
Os autores estadunidenses particularmente são mestres em repetir erros de “estudiosos” da década de 1960 e 1970. A divisão que eles fazem de tiras e comic books, como se fossem coisas completamente distintas e diferentes, e o fato de que costumam excluir o resto do planeta de suas pesquisas também atrapalham muito, tanto no estudo da história das HQs, quanto no estudo da evolução da narrativa. Uma pena.
