Bloomsday- Heart of the Artichoke (Bayonet Records)
Tumblr media
Here’s the 2nd full-length from Brooklyn's Iris James Garrison, better known as Bloomsday, on Bayonet Records. It’s filled with a slew of indie musicians right down to producer Ryan Albert (Babehoven) and mixer Henry Stoehr (Slow Pulp). I mention this because the press release states it’s a collaborative feel on this one. “Where I End and You Begin” sets the mood of the album with strumming acoustic guitars, Neil Young’s “Southern Man” beat, dreamy keyboards, and Iris’s mellow singing. “Smell your perfume here; Used to smell it everywhere; Never got it out of that sweater; I hope that you’re doing better; Where I end and you begin.” It ends with a soaring guitar solo. “Virtual Hug” gives off a boygenius vibe (pick any of the three songwriters), which is not a bad comparison. More upbeat, but still a slow, soft sound. “You took me to your local haunt. The bartender knew exactly what you want. And played your favorite songs on the jukebox all night long. Seeing you, Sewn together, Weave me through, Where you go when you are along.” The title track, “Artichoke,” is another softer song highlighting intricate guitar work that eventually builds and builds with added instruments. “Peel back all your layers, Get you to your core. Heart of the artichoke keeps me wanting more.” “Bumper Sticker” is another favorite, a song with a bit of a bounce to it. Excellent electric guitar this time around. “Can you see past this; On a different day; Show them everything that we’ve got on a small screen; Leave out anything with feeling or a bad dream. I wanna go where you go. I wanna stay in our home. Holding our hands through the phone. I need to settle down. I need to.” More soaring guitar solos and keyboards add to this one. “Night Swim” is a short, slow, eerie instrumental that fits in perfectly with the rest of the album’s soft sound.  Next up, “Carefully,” quietly trickles in with Iris and acoustic guitar. A beautiful song displaying intricate guitar and vocals. “Make them laugh, Carefully, You’ll find a way, To hide your needs, In cups of tea, In empty beer cans.” “Object Permanence” is another upbeat song that would be great to hear live. (Looks like only New York shows at this point.). Great beats, hypnotic keyboards, occasional guitar riffs, and Iris’s vocals make this song another gem. The album closes out with “Old Friend,” another slower, softer track. The lyrics tell it all, “Old friend, See me as I was before, Drifting, begging, for a place to land.” Ten new songs that capture a mood perfect for late night, early morning, or an adventure in the quiet outdoors. Here’s hoping Bloosmsday will make it out of New York this summer.  ERIC EGGLESON

Manpreet Kundi
South Asian, UK-based artist Manpreet Kundi is releasing her self-written debut single ‘something’, setting the unique tone for her upcoming EP. Created acoustically at the piano; the song's essence is dreamy, lovelorn, melancholy and raw—dressed up in both dark and sad pop ambiances. something is layered in an emotional and lyrical sense; but at its core, is about "doubting everything you ever were to someone who for a while made you feel the most significant. It is the chaos and sheer sadness in the breakdown of what you had with said person; after they seemingly change their mind and leave you in panicked confusion with little to no explanation." The composition is an enchanted entwine of lingering vocal melodies and evocative instrumental; blending Manpreet’s signature acoustic piano, smooth atmospheric sounds and heavy, slow-tempo drums. "The entire song fell into place very naturally; born of my reflective tendencies and the intense, prolonged emotion I was feeling." Each section develops dynamically, inviting the listener on a journey through tender string arrangements to deep, bassy, hard-hitting sections. Her boyfriend Michael Brooker is the main producer of the track; along with Manpreet directing the nature of fundamental components plus engaging in elements of co-production—yet giving him creative freedom over the project's soundscape. Manpreet casts a glitter-dripping spell of magical, emotive piano and hauntingly mesmeric vocals to move you with the innate rawness and sentiment they carry. Writing music mostly at her piano; she is constantly inspired and liberated by the instrument that ever-propels her dynamic songcraft. Manpreet's heady, slow-tempo and cinematic style is reflective of main musical influence Lana Del Rey; as well as the 80's and 90's Disney movie soundtracks she began singing along to at 3 years old. She also grew up a fan of Taylor Swift, who furthered her love of poignant story-telling and sparklingly melodic lyricisms. She is repeatedly drawn to Lennon Stella's powerful vocal delivery, and unrivalled Frank Sinatra's spellbinding artistry. Listen to ‘something’ below.
300D
Jen Weisberg (former Ruby Pins) and Ben Pearce (former Windhal Flat) met through the Santa Cruz music scene of 2004. They didn’t become friends until a chance meeting on a street corner in Oakland, and they didn’t form 300D until a couple months into the pandemic. Ben Pearce produces Jen Weisberg’s words and vocal melodies. Their sophomore release ‘Grocery Vaping’ follows their December release ‘Valley Riff’. 300D held the Oakland friends together through the pandemic when Jen (a librarian) was enlisted as a disaster service worker, and Ben returned to Santa Cruz to help his family with the childcare gap left by school closures. ‘Grocery Vaping,’ echoes the duo’s musical evolution through swelling strings and words of longing. Listen below.

VIAL
VIAL is an indie punk quartet based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, made up of Taylor Kraemer, Kate Kanfield, KT Branscom, and Katie Fischer. Their album LOUDMOUTH is here. Building on the band’s indie-punk DNA, it’s equal parts volatile and vulnerable. Producer Henry Stoehr (Slow Pulp) approaches the band’s core tenacity with an open heart, unleashing energy informed by guts, not necessarily genre. The band’s punk rock roots pack plenty of punch while new-wave moments rub elbows with WLW songs that wear roughness on their sleeves. There’s even a carnivalesque intro, reclaiming for VIAL what it means to be ringmaster. After all: in their three-ring circus, there’s no room for clowns. The track we’re focusing on here today is ‘Planet Drool’. The track is an emotional release of anger about our recurring feelings of discomfort in select punk scenes set to a fast-paced punk instrumental. Although named after the fictional universe of the 2005 children’s film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, ‘Planet Drool’ is the heaviest VIAL song they’ve yet to write! Listen below.
Chloe Castro
Chloe Castro has released her first single, 'FUTURE', since her debut EP AMID. Following a childhood spent living between France, Brazil and Wales, Chloe Castro relocated to the North East of England where she began writing songs aged 11. In 2016, half-Brazillian/half-British Chloe battled it out on National Television making it to the quarter finals of BBC One's The Voice UK. Having been recognized for her hypnotic voice, depth and lyrical prowess after her successful television debut, Chloe dedicated the next few years to honing her skills and building her repertoire in a studio in her spare bedroom with producer and co-writer Jake Karno. Inspired by artists including PARTYNEXTDOOR, Bryson Tiller and Frank Ocean, UK based R&B/Trapsoul artist Chloe Castro delicately blends together R&B and Soulful tones with Trap and elements of rap to create a sound that is uniquely her. 'FUTURE’ sees Chloe deliver a dark, sassy and powerful 'I don’t care if we break-up' song promoting independence and self-worth with straight to the point lyrics and emotive vocals. ‘FUTURE’ touches on the vulnerability of being in love and the frustration of feeling underestimated. It pairs that with a self-assured “fuck-you” attitude to create an anthemic vibe for summer 2021. As Chloe describes ‘FUTURE’: “Future is my way of saying let me do me, I know what’s best for me. Like feeling underestimated by someone but knowing your worth and not caring what anyone thinks, even someone you love.” Listen below.

Slow Pulp: From Playgrounds to Playing Crowds
Tumblr media
Paying homage to the vastly popular 90s rock group, the neo-grunge Slow Pulp is reviving and revolutionizing the alt-rock genre. Originally from Madison, WI, but now based in Chicago, the quartet is comprised of drummer Teddy Mathews, vocalist Emily Massey, guitarist Henry Stoehr, and bassist Alex Leeds. Apart from their front woman, who joined the group at the end of 2016, the band started playing music together in grade school. Not much has changed since then, except that playgrounds have turned into dimly-lit, crowded venues.
The quirky group of artists creates their sound based on their sight and vice versa. They are visual artists as well as musicians, and use a full spectrum of both color and sound in order to produce uniquely versatile electro-pop grunge anthems.
youtube
Their recent Big Day EP, which dropped May 15, is on the brink of reaching one million streams on Spotify, while their hit single from 2018, “Steel Birds,” has already surpassed the one million mark on its own. The recent EP is short but sweet, featuring four uber-moody yet hard-hitting tracks. The first, “Do You Feel It,” opens the project with an ethereal synth-driven intro that banters with and experimental keyboard and is eventually overtaken by Massey’s empyrean croons. The remaining three tracks, when heard in succession, create a starry lullaby-on-the-move; soft but sure-footed, and landing like a butterfly in the palm of ones hand.
Dive headfirst into Slow Pulp, and discover a dark musical aesthetic with a nightlight of hope whose perspective and maturity sounds similar to the way red wine tastes.

Slow Pulp- MOVEYS (WINSPEAR)
Tumblr media
Usually when a debut hits, it means a band finally has enough songs to release. This is not the case for Slow Pulp. They have been self-releasing EPs and singles since 2015. Moveys marks their move to the big stage with label Winspear (Barrie, Kevin Krauter, Video Age, etc.) behind this one. Alexander Leeds, Emily Massey, Theodore Mathews, and Henry Stoehr (handling engineering, also) make up the band that is from Madison or Chicago, depending on what you read. A Midwest band at any rate that gives us a wide variety of ten songs in 26 ½ minutes.
The first song, “New Horse,” lays the groundwork for an enjoyable taste of today’s indiepop. If you’re a fan of Soccer Mommy or Jay Som, both of which I am, then this a must listen for you. Jangling acoustic guitar, soft-spoken vocals sharing the tough times they have been through. “I know I’m still getting better; I might come back; I’ll hope for that.” A perfect way for them, and all of us, to get through this pandemic. “Idaho,” the longest song, clocking in at four minutes, continues with the struggle of relationships. “Before I knew why, I don’t think I can win your side on time, I’m losing all the while.” Probably my favorite song, “At It Again,” shifts to an upbeat, danceable melody that drops off with a gorgeous, trailing off ending. “Channel 2” kicks in with a Pumpkins-like rhythm section, but then the razor guitar comes in with one of the few tracks with male vocals. Just when you think you’ve nailed the album, Emily’s father adds his piano work to a beautiful instrumental called, “Whisper (In The Outfield).” Adding violin is also a nice touch to “Falling Apart” that brings the focus back to the heartfelt lyrics. “Why don’t you go back; To falling apart; You were so good at that.” Willie Christianson, a fellow Midwest friend, adds another dimension with his slide guitar and harmonica in “Montana.” If this was the only song you heard, you might think that they were alt-country or Americana if you tuned in towards the end of it. The last song, the title track, “Moveys,” takes the listener even further away with its funky, Hip Hop sound.
All in all, there’s really not a bad song on here. I would love to hear these songs performed live, but who knows when that will be?                                               https://slowpulp.bandcamp.com/album/moveys
