Note
Do you have any special keepsakes to remind yourself of eachother?
Also did you help Kiawe with his trial? Or did you distract him? :3c
Tumblr media
Thank you EM and Clara @alrest for these questions 🥺 since they're similar I'll answer them together!
I had a hawaiian oomf for a time that headcanoned Kiawe's necklace to have feathers and shark teeth instead of just the metallic accessories, so that's my hc too. The feathers are swapped out sometimes, one of them is Talonflame's (Kiawe's pokemon) and one of them is Toucannon's (Wren's partner pokemon). The latter is probably the one on the left since it's closer to his heart.
In general they keep a lot of feathers between themselves. Most of the feathers their bird pokemon dropped are given to the other. If wren also finds any feathers on the ground outside, he'd also give some of them to Kiawe :)
Apart from that, they're not very materialistic... So they don't really have many things they bought for the other.... Except these matching plush keychains they have on their bags.
Tumblr media
Kiawe also caught a shiny fletchling at Wela volcano park for wren once. Cute detail here- it was before they confessed and starting dating and he bought a love ball to catch it in to gift wren, but he got nervous about it and didn't know how appropriate it was so he just ended up using one of his ultra balls (all his pokemon are in ultra balls in the game). So that fletchling would remind wren of kiawe too!
As for other non-tangible things, in general the sunset reminds them of each other. They haven't spent a lot of sunsets apart since they got together, but when Wren flies back home for a break and before Kiawe started studying in Wren's region and they go university together, they always look at the sunset and think of the other when time is spent apart.
Also any birds, and Especially the pikipek line reminds kiawe of wren. Mainly becuz. Wren has always wanted a toucannon before he came to alola, and when he did the first pokemon he caught was a pikipek. So when kiawe and wren first met, kiawe's impression of him included that pikipek. And he always had it with him from then on.
Wren mentioned that their heads also reminds him of kiawe's hair. But the reason he really liked toucannon, apart from being really cool, was because they are also symbols of love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since pokemon doesn't have a hornbill equivalent (YET!) toucannon are to my s/i in the pokemon world what hornbills are to me in real life– symbols of love 🥺
So that's why despite growing up seeing pikipek everywhere, kiawe sees them in a different light because of wren.
As for the trial question– Majority of the time Wren isn't there with Kiawe during the day! They only meet during evening to see the sunset and head down the volcano park together. Wren has fieldwork to do in the daytime.
Buuuut his schedule is flexible. That means when he Does have time to visit kiawe during his trial duties, kiawe finds it distracting LOL. I think the first few times wren visited kiawe during his trials, he watches him and kiawe couldn't really focus, and wren noticed it so he started to not bother or even look at kiawe when he's conducting his trial, instead sitting a distance away at their usual sunset spot. But he's still visible to Kiawe and he keeps looking over at wren. And also wren peeks at kiawe. So. just keep these two away from each other during their 'working hours' 💀💀💀💀💀💀
Also sometimes wren has to do fieldwork at the volcano park and he gets reaalllyy excited for it. Even when he knows days in advance, he doesn't tell kiawe to surprise him there when the time comes. Kiawe's like wren what are you doing here.
"Why, am I being a distraction. Because I have to take 60 samples of volcanic soil of a specific water ratio from the rain 12 hours ago accounting for the influence of increased salandit traffic due to the nesting period and also investigating this relationship between soil temperature and herpeto-pokemon and whether it's unique to volcanic temperatures. And because I need a range I have to take at least 10 samples from the summit and your trial site too. Sorry. "
"Oh.... In that case..."
"I'm kiddingg, it's not that complicated. And I'll only be at the base of the volcano park. See ya."
"Oh.... See you, Wren." <- relieved he won't get distracted but also sad that wren will be out of his sight
They're so funnynyy to me.

The Next Generation - Chapter 2
Kion sat at the edge of Cikha Escarpment.  He opened his mouth and roared, but only a normal lion’s roar came out.  It sounded empty.  It felt empty.  He no longer had the Roar of the Elders.  But it hadn’t gone to Taakat either.  He knew she would’ve said something.  Where was it?  Was it forever back in the Pride Lands?
Rani walked up to him.  “There you are.  I’m used to hearing your roar from much farther away.”
“Yeah…” Kion looked away.  “Was it something I did?  Is that why our marks disappeared?”  He pawed at his scar.
“Kion,” Rani nuzzled him.  “It’s nothing on you.  You are the least evil animal I know.”
“But why didn’t Taakat get the Roar?” he asked.
“Maybe the Lions of the Past decided they didn’t need it then,” Rani suggested.  “They’ll get the Roar someday.  Soon.”
Kion nodded.  He stood up.  “Come.  Let’s go thank Badili.”
                “Thank…who?” Rani asked.
“Right, right,” Kion said.  He started walking and motioned for Rani to follow him.  “Makini and I had decided that we needed to make sure Taakat was ready to lead.”
                “They are,” Rani pointed out.
“Yes,” Kion said.  “But I was worried.  I got Badili to send some of leap to ‘invade’ the Tree.”
                “And you didn’t tell me?”
“Would you have let it happen?”
                “Fair.”
---------------------------------------------------------------
Taakat sat outside the Tree of Life.  Her parents weren’t there, so she was alone with Raaja.  His expression was hard to make out.  Was he worried?  Excited?
“You’re going to do a great job,” Taakat said.
“That’s what I’m worried about,” Raaja said.  “What if I try too hard and make a mistake?”
“Never,” Taakat said.  “Besides, I’m here to make sure you don’t end up getting yourself killed.”
“More than you know,” Fuli walked up to them.  Taakat always admired the cheetah.  She was responsible, but still wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.  “Kion told you about him and Kiara, right?”
“But there’s no Janja here,” Raaja said.  “We’ve had peace for the longest time.”
“All peaceful periods are destined to end,” Makini came up to them.
“You’re starting to sound like Rafiki,” Kion said.  “Should I be concerned?”
“Nonsense!” she hit Kion on the head with her staff.
“Oww,” Kion complained.  “Even acting like Rafiki.”
“Should I be concerned about that?” Raaja asked.
Everyone laughed, and Makini shook her head.  “Not if you’re sensible.”
“Yes,” Rani said.  “Makini will be staying behind as your Royal Mjuzi, Raaja.  Do not be afraid to ask her questions.  She will answer them to the best of her ability.”
“And you have Taakat by your side,” Baliyo pointed out.
“King Kion!” a voice Taakat had never heard before cried.
                Kion’s head shot up.  “Zazu?”
“Yes,” a bird flew in front of Kion.
“That’s a hornbill,” Yasna whispered to Taakat.  “This one is specifically the royal advisor of the Pride Lands.”
“Queen Kiara sent me for you,” the hornbill explained.  “Make sure you have safe passage into the Pride Lands.”
“Thank you,” Kion said.  He turned to everyone.  “Night Pride!”  There was a moment of silence as each member looked at their blank shoulders.  Kion shook himself.  “We’re heading out!”
Murmurs of agreement rose, and Taakat caught Kion and Rani looking at her, then sharing glances.  What’s that about?  She hoped her question would be answered when Rani came up to her.
“Something might happen while we’re gone,” Rani said.  “Don’t be alarmed, and just talk to Makini.”
Taakat’s gaze was drawn to the mandrill.  Makini was muttering something to herself.  Just from reading her lips, Taakat could see ‘fierce speed,’ ‘daughters,’ and ‘time.’  Fierce speed?  It was such a strange phrase that Taakat wondered if she misread.
                “Rani!” Kion called.
“Coming!” Rani started, but glanced back at her daughter.  Taakat nodded.  Whatever it is, I’ll make you proud, Mom.
She looked up just in time to see Kion stopping Ullu from following them.  “I fear you’ll be needed here,” he was saying.  “We have Zazu to help if necessary.”
“And I presume we will have the Roar of the Elders on our journey?” Zazu said.  Everyone went quiet.  Zazu peered around to Kion’s shoulder.  “Oh.”
“We don’t need it anyway, do we?” Rani said.
“Of course not!” Fuli nudged Kion.  “You led us here without your Roar, and you can lead us back.”
“But I had you,” Kion said.
                “And you’re not alone now.”
The Night Pride let out a resounding agreement.
“Alright,” Kion smiled.  “With strength and respect…”
                “Night Pride protect!”
---------------------------------------------------------------
It had been about a day since the Night Pride had left, and nothing had really changed for Taakat.  Sure, some animals were being nicer to her, but it was evident that it was superficial.  So, she still spent most of her time with Upesi.  For example, right now.  She was laying beside the cheetah in their usual spot, their tails intertwined.  It was one of the hotter days, but the waterfall was usually enough.  Usually.
“It’s really hot today,” Upesi complained.
“And yet you still don’t want to move to a cooler place,” Taakat observed.
                “Then it’s too cold.”
“I have a fix for that,” Taakat said, grinning mischievously.
                “Taakat…”
But it was too late.  Taakat had already pounced on Upesi and brought her into the lake.  Upesi groaned, while Taakat was laughing.  “You said you were hot!” Which you always were, she added silently.  Then, immediately reprimanded herself.  What are you thinking?  Upesi’s just a friend.  Just a friend.
“Yeah, but still!” Upesi clambered out of the water.
Takaat was following her, when a howl came from the entrance to the Tree of Life.  That’s strange.  That doesn’t sound like Loup.  “You hear that?” she asked Upesi.  Upesi nodded.  Where is everybody?  “We should get a closer look.”
They both shook water out of their pelts before sprinting towards the sound.  It was near the edge of the territory of the Tree of Life.  Five animals were tossing around a sixth.  The sixth one was balled up, and Takaat had to look closely for a second before realizing that it was an animal.
“I’ve never seen them before,” Upesi whispered.
“Look how they’re treating that animal,” Takaat pointed out.  “Armadillo?”
                “Pangolin.”
“Whatever.  We have to stop them.”
                “Without the others?”
“Does it look like they’ll last that long?”
                “Fair point.”
Taakat sprinted towards them.  “Hey!  Get away from that pangolin!”
A tiger glared at her.  “What are you going to do?”
Taakat unsheathed her claws.  She growled.  Upesi was at her side in a heartbeat.  Deep down, she knew that the battle would be hopeless.  But still…she couldn’t help but fight.  There was always a need to protect the Circle of Life – and these animals weren’t respecting it.
The tiger came to circle around them, but Taakat didn’t take her eyes off them.  There was no way she was going to let this abuse continue.  Her eyes darted towards the pangolin.  The commotion had at least freed them from the animals.
‘Go!’ she mouthed.  The pangolin nodded, and ran away.
“Now look what you’ve done,” the tiger growled.  They bounded back to the other animals and locked eyes with Taakat.  “It’s five against two.  I think I like those odds.  Maybe we could even get into that Tree with the Night Pride gone.”
The wind started to pick up as Taakat growled.  She stalked in front of Upesi.  “There are still those willing to protect the Circle of Life.”
She roared, the wind blowing strong behind her.  The animals in front of her cowered.  That’s right.  Back down.  Once the roar stopped, everything felt quieter.  Taakat was vaguely aware of Upesi calling her name, but her knees felt weak.  It felt like it was from far away as her legs and body hit the ground and everything went black.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Taakat opened their eyes.  Everything was white – she was nowhere close to the Tree of Life.  It wasn’t cold enough to be in the section for the cold animals.  In fact, the temperature was quite pleasant.  It almost looked like they were in the clouds.  Where am I?  From far away, they could see what looked like clouds turning into lions.  The lions looked like them.  Very familiar, but it took Taakat a second to realize who they were.
“Great Grandfather Mufasa?” they asked.  “Grandmother Ãnanda?  Grandfather Sãhasí?  Am I…”
Mufasa gave a small chuckle.  “No.  You still have quite the destiny in your future.”
“We have come to give you advice,” Sãhasí said.  “Makini will need your help.”
“My help for what?” Taakat asked.
“You are the new leader of the Night Pride,” Ãnanda explained.  “But your Roar will be much stronger than Kion’s.  Do not be afraid of what happens.”
                “What will happen?” Taakat asked.
The other three lions just smiled as they faded.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Taakat opened their eyes.  They were in the Tree of Life, and Upesi was lying next to them.  Her flank was rising and falling gently.  Although they couldn’t see her eyes, Taakat could tell that she was sleeping.  Or at least, not fully awake.  They stood up and stretched.  From the entrance, they saw the oranges of what they assumed to be sunset.  How long was I asleep?  They shook themselves.  Something was off, but they couldn’t place a claw on it.  They walked out, and saw Raaja sitting outside.
                “Taakat!” he said.  “You’re alright!”
“Yeah,” Taakat said.  “Don’t know what—what.”  Their voice had changed.  It was higher than it had been before.  Also more legato.  Not that they were complaining, but....They tried to bring it down to their old register.  “What happened?”  It was there, but it was certainly less comfortable.  They coughed and relaxed their voice.  “Huh.  That’s gonna be weird to explain to Mom and Dad.”
Raaja laughed.  “That’s not all.  Follow.”  He blew some hair from his mane out of his face.  Taakat tried to do the same, but there was no hair.  Did it…Regardless, they followed their brother.  He led them to Pratibimba.  The Lake of Reflection, Taakat thought.  They walked to the shore, and saw their face.
There was no mane.  As they turned, they became aware of their slightly different physique as well.  Plus a lion head on their right shoulder.  I’m really part of the Night Pride now.  And a lioness.  It was hard to tell which was more surprising.
“Is everything okay?” Raaja asked.  “I don’t know what happened.  Upesi was out of breath when she got me.  You were like that when we started to carry you.”
                “Even the Mark?” Taakat asked.
“It was the first thing I noticed.” Upesi walked up and butted Taakat in the flank.  She backed up.  “Wow.  You look nice.”
“Thanks,” Taakat said, looking down.  They then brought their eyes to Upesi.  There was always something about the cheetah’s deep, forest-green eyes.  The caring in them whenever they looked at Taakat.  “What happened after I passed out?”
“The other animals were gone quickly, and I panicked,” Upesi explained.  There was also her voice.  It was so nice, deep, and legato.  Much more resonant than Taakat’s new voice.  Okay Taakat, stop gushing over her.  Listen to her.  Upesi continued.  “Nothing had changed but the Mark originally.  I ran to get Raaja, and when we were back, you were like that.  It took both of us by surprise, but we knew we had to get you to the Tree.”
“That’s that,” Raaja said.  “Should probably talk to Makini, though.  Set up the Night Pride.  We’ll need you guys.”
Taakat nodded.  They remembered the stories about how Kion had assembled the Lion Guard.  They couldn’t be mad at me for doing the same, right?  Taakat looked around.  No other animals were around.  “Raaja, do you have any suggestions?”
“The Lion Guard had a great variety of strengths.  I can’t help but feel you’ll need it.”
Makini came bounding up to them.  “That’s right!”  She stopped speaking to catch her breath.  Her eyes landed on Taakat.  “Taa..kat?”
                “Yep.  That’s me.”
“Wow.  I had no idea the Roar could do that.  It is you with the Roar, right?”
“Do you see another explanation?” Taakat showed Makini their shoulder.  My dream was just that, right?
“I guess not.  Anyway.  Ultimately, the animals in the Night Pride are fully up to you.  They do not have to be fully lions – but know their strengths and weaknesses.”
                “I understand.  Come on, Upesi.”
Taakat started walking, Upesi behind them.

What to See and Do on the Dudhsagar Falls Trek?
Tumblr media
Dudhsagar Falls, nestled in the lush Western Ghats of India, is one of the country's tallest waterfalls and a popular destination for trekkers and nature lovers alike. The trek to Dudhsagar Falls offers a thrilling mix of adventure, breathtaking scenery, and the chance to experience the vibrant biodiversity of the region. Here’s a guide to what you can expect to see and do on this unforgettable journey. In this blog, we will answer all sorts of questions like “is Dudhsagar Trek open now?” and more.
Are You Confused About Planning Dudhsagar Falls Trek Optimally?
1. Witness the Majestic Dudhsagar Falls
The highlight of the Dudhsagar trek distance is, of course, the Dudhsagar Falls itself. Translated to “Sea of Milk,” Dudhsagar is a four-tiered waterfall that plunges from a height of over 1,000 feet. The sheer volume of water crashing down creates a mist that envelops the area, giving the appearance of milk flowing from the sky—a sight that leaves every visitor in awe. The falls are especially spectacular during the monsoon season, when the flow is at its peak, turning the cascade into a roaring white torrent.
Visitors often find themselves captivated by the sound and sight of the water as it gushes down, creating a natural symphony in the heart of the forest. The area around the falls is ideal for photography, with the verdant backdrop and the waterfall’s impressive drop providing stunning visuals.
2. Explore the Scenic Railway Trek
One of the most popular routes to reach Dudhsagar Falls trekking is via the railway track that runs through the dense forests of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Starting from Castle Rock or Kulem, this trek takes adventurers along railway tracks, through tunnels, and across bridges, offering a unique perspective of the Western Ghats. The railway trek is relatively flat but requires caution, as trekkers share the path with trains that occasionally pass by.
As trekkers make their way towards Dudhsagar, they are greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding hills, thick forest cover, and glimpses of local wildlife. The sight of the falls gradually coming into view, framed by the greenery, is an experience that few can forget.
3. Discover the Biodiversity of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary
The trek to Dudhsagar waterfall trip Goa takes you through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest protected areas in Goa. This sanctuary is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including several endangered species. The dense forests are teeming with life, and if you’re lucky, you might spot animals such as Indian bison, spotted deer, or even the elusive black panther.
Birdwatchers will find the sanctuary particularly rewarding, as it is home to numerous species of birds, including the Malabar whistling thrush, great Indian hornbill, and various species of kingfishers. The forest is also dotted with streams and small waterfalls, adding to the serene atmosphere of the trek.
4. Take a Dip in the Natural Pools
After a long trek, there’s nothing more refreshing than taking a dip in the cool, clear waters near Dudhsagar Falls. The natural pools formed by the waterfall are inviting, especially after the physical exertion of the trek. The water is cool, and the surroundings are peaceful, making it a perfect spot to relax and rejuvenate before heading back. Besides this, you can also book Dudhsagar waterfall resort that offers such amenities.
Swimming in these pools allows trekkers to experience the falls from a different perspective, feeling the mist on their skin and hearing the thunderous roar of the water up close. It’s a moment that connects you with nature in its purest form.
5. Enjoy a Picnic in the Lap of Nature
The area around Dudhsagar Falls is perfect for a picnic. After spending time at the falls, trekkers can find a quiet spot under the shade of the trees to enjoy a meal. Surrounded by the sounds of nature, with the distant roar of the waterfall, it’s an idyllic setting for a break. Remember to pack out all your trash to preserve the beauty of the environment.
6. Capture the Perfect Shot
The Dudhsagar Falls trek is a photographer’s paradise. From the mist-covered falls to the dense jungle paths, every step of the trek offers a potential photograph. Early morning light filtering through the trees, the vibrant green of the forest, and the play of shadows across the water all combine to create stunning imagery.
Whether you’re a professional photographer or just enjoy snapping pictures on your phone, the trek provides ample opportunities to capture the essence of this natural wonder.
Are You Well Prepared to Conquer the Dudhsagar Trek Distance ?
The Dudhsagar Falls trek is more than just a journey to a waterfall; it’s an adventure through one of India’s most beautiful landscapes. From the thrill of trekking along railway tracks to the tranquility of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, every aspect of this trek offers something unique. For those looking to experience nature in its raw, untamed form, the Dudhsagar Falls trek is an adventure not to be missed.

I find it *extremely* difficult to find any pre-colonial history of my culture. How did you go about your research process in order to write EOTM?
i feel you anon haha. so many of my writing hurdles with eotm involve getting trapped in research rabbit holes. i’ve answered this question before here.
for chapter two specifically, i dug into researching spiritual practices with the help of resources that ate ligaya at @pinoy-culture and the mods at the diwatahan server have put together because i thought that giving a glimpse into how the chaos upstairs is affecting the mortals was crucial to the storytelling. obviously i didn’t want to just make this part up completely since it would be a depiction (however loose) of real practices. i wanted to be respectful and do the reading before i could really build the scene. links below:
intro to anituo: practice and resources
anitism: a survey of religious beliefs
if you’re in the eotm discord server, we also have a channel in there with a small collection of resources (including some pdfs to books). 📚
the historical research i do influences the context and foundation of the story but most of the time it’s only the beginning of the creative process. ultimately, i’m telling a specific, intentional story against the backdrop of a mythological adventure, so real life needs to be exaggerated to really give kaluwalhatian a sense of surreal majesty—just familiar enough to be comforting but then emphasized into something fantastical.
for example when i came up with the design of the talusi, i literally just looked up “native birds palawan” and looked through pictures until something inspired me. i saw these hornbills and thought to myself that they already look like they have two heads so why not give it to em?
Tumblr media
hope this is helpful! good luck with your research 💞

(mine is scissor tailed flycatcher, bearded vulture, king vulture, and so many others I can't name or else this will get too long but know it includes tonnees of hornbills and birds of prey)
Hello gooberanon! I actually previously answered that here! :]
This one's going to be hard to answer. For raptors it's a tie between the harpy eagle and barn owls. For ratites, as much as I love emus (having one), I'd have to say the southern cassowary because they're awesome and can kill me. That's not a bird, that's a bloody dinosaur. Favourite water bird is probably swans because I wouldn't want to fight a swan, it'd kick my arse.

You are driven by your desires — the shaman had gravely told Phupha, as he held onto his palm tightly — you are confident but may become unempathetic on a gloomy day.
"You see this line?" the shaman had asked, shaking his head, pointing at a line on the center of his palm. "You see how straight it is? There are no rigid categories of right and wrong. Be sure to look at the grey areas in life, my boy. Not everything is black and white for you."
Nam had scoffed a little too loudly then, muttering something like see, I told you!
The shaman had touched the area where his thumb had ended, pressed down and said — you have no emotional connection to romance. Not yet anyway — in a blatant dismissal.
Phupha's eyes had found Torfun's eyes, then, who in turn had only smiled in return, her eyes dancing with something akin to amusement.
"You're just going to have to be careful," the shaman had said.
"Careful about what?"
The shaman had looked unimpressed, had pressed his lips in a thin line, and muttered quite seriously, "Someone is going to enter your life in bouts of hurricane. Nothing is going to be the same for you — you will thank them for that. You will love them for that. You will love them for showing you how to live. You will love them for everything that they are."
Phupha had been amused by this. "I will?"
"They will come and you will want them gone. They will stay and you will love them all the same. They will leave and you will find your heart leaving with them."
Phupha's amusement had died down then. He had never been the one for idle fantasies construed around words that were elicited by a mere touch of someone's palm on his. But this had seemed different.
"It will?" Phupha had asked in a moment of weakness.
"When you fall in love," he'd continued, oblivious to the turmoil in Phupha's heart, "you're going to fall deeper than what you imagine now. Do not allow yourself to be fearful of how ardently you'll want to be loved back. Do not hide from them. Your relationships have a potential to be restless, you see?" The shaman had tapped the starting of his heart line, underneath his middle finger. "Your relationship will last for a long time, though," he'd said, tracing his finger over his heart line.
"What then?" Phupha had asked, as though his future really did hold for him someone he is willing to give his heart for.
The shaman had looked disappointed then, had trailed a finger on his heart line pressed where it trailed off.
"It will depend on them," the shaman had said. "If you love them, you will want what is best for them. They will get to decide if they want to stay or leave. Not you — never you."
Phupha had nodded, entranced by the sincerity of the shaman's words, as though he could really be so consumed by love for someone, as though he could truly have that — have someone to return to, have someone to call his home.
All idle fantasies, Phupha told himself. Just because his palm showed the shaman things does not mean that they were true. There was no point in believing in those senseless dreams based on hopeless wishes he'd still had before. There was no point in hoping for someone who would love him just the same.
Then, he met Tian.
There was no point in hoping for love until a year later when his life revealed a cob-webbed space behind the camouflaged curtains that he'd thought of as previously non-existent — a space that Tian seemed to fit into, effortlessly, a space that had been Tian's ever since he lay his eyes on him.
Tian carried with him the winds of change, his presence cognate with all forces of nature, and Phupha felt his heart crawl out of his chest and sit atop of Tian, until all of him became consumed with Tian. Tian. Tian. Tian.
His heart screamed Tian's name when Phupha lay beside him, their little fingers touching. His heart screamed Tian's name when Phupha realised that all songs will, in fact, remind him of Tian. His heart screamed Tian's name every time Tian so much as looked, smiled in his direction. His heart whispered Tian's name — as continuous as the beat of a drum — when he found out. His heart thrummed Tian's name as he lay on the cold ground, blood oozing out of his shoulder.
Right now, when the room — their room, Phupha will maintain, even though Tian's leaving, even though he's staying here after Phupha had been cruel to him only to indulge Phupha — was enveloped by the hush of darkness, the distance between them an arm's length apart, Phupha is reminded of the words by the shaman, yet again. They will get to decide if they want to stay or leave. Not you — never you.
"Do you want to stay or leave?"
Phupha hears Tian's shuddering intake of breath, then the rustle of his clothes as he shifts to dangle his hand off of the bed. "Isn't it a little too late to ask that, chief? After you've asked me to leave only if I return the feelings you have for me?"
Phupha shifts closer to where Tian's hand is; he wants to twine their fingers together, wants to plant a kiss on the back of his palm all the way to his shoulder. He wants, wants, wants, to make Tian feel, even for a moment, just how consumed he feels.
Instead, he looks at the Tian — not that he can see any discernible features, barely a silhouette — and asks. "Would you want to stay here if it weren't for me?"
Tian is quiet, then.
"You must know," Phupha says, "all I want for you is to discover the life you want to live. For your sake. Not for mine, not for Torfun. Would you stay here if it weren't for me?"
"You must know," Tian counters. "I would follow you to the end of the world."
Phupha catches hold of Tian's hand then, weaving their fingers together. "What do you want for yourself, Tian?"
Tian's answer is brutal, honest. "You."
Phupha tries not to let his anxieties creep up on him, then — what if he were to not return home one day, would Tian have ruined his stable life in the city for nothing? — but this isn't about him. It's about Tian and what he wants.
"What life do you want to live then, Tian? Here, at the village, regardless of my presence, at the city or someplace entirely new?"
Tian is silent for a moment, then his answer — open, honest. "I don't know."
"It's okay," Phupha assures, shifting so he is almost at the edge of his mattress. "You don't have to know, now. You have time to figure out what you want. The village won't go anywhere. It will always be here for you."
"Will you?"
"Will I?"
"Will you go anywhere? Will you be here, then?"
In a bout of courage, Phupha presses a kiss on the tips of his fingers, hoping it conveys, I will be waiting for you till you figure out everything you need to. Even if it takes forever. Even if you decide that a life at the village is not what you want. Even if you decide that you could never come here, even to visit.
Tian sifts his palm so that his fingers are now splayed across Phupha's cheek, tracing shapes. Phupha plants a kiss to the centre of his palm, then at his heart line, all the while hoping that it translates to, do you know why the hornbill waits for its mate in the same place? Because it believes its mate is just lost, that it will come home when it finds its way back. I love you, Tian, do you know? I will be waiting like a hornbill waiting for its mate, even if you decide to never come back.
The repetitive shapes that Tian traces on his cheek don't cease to continue and Phupha finds his eyes grow heavy. His last thought before falling asleep is — I love you, Tian. Did you know? I love you. I would count a thousand stars and wish for only your happiness and safety. I love you.
("If you love them, you will want what is best for them. They will get to decide if they want to stay or leave. Not you — never you," the shaman had said.
"What if they leave?" Phupha had asked — he hadn't known where the questions were coming from; he barely believed in fortune foretellings. But there was something about the certainty in which the shaman carried himself, something that made Phupha was to unravel everything there was to know. What if they leave and I am the one waiting for them the way my mother waited for my father? What if they leave and I am left behind, only their memories keeping me alive?
The shaman had only looked pitifully in his direction, tapping the back of his palm to move to another one of his lines.)
The day is frigid and soaked in misery, when Tian leaves. Phupha can only look at the car in the distance, carrying his heart and soul, leaving him behind.
(The shaman, after reading everyone's palms, had found Phupha again. He had made Phupha splay his palm out, and had said, in a tone of gentle assurance, "They will find their way back home. One way or another.")
The day is warm, the sunlight golden and honey-hued the day Tian finds his way back home. Phupha can only hold Tian in his arms, then — can only shout I love you from the summit in his heart, can only whisper, "Welcome home," in his ears for it to also mean I love you.
"I am glad to find my way back home," Tian replies, and Phupha hears I love you too, interlaced with every word.
Phupha will say it out loud later, when they've both finished eating together — the first meal that they've shared in over three months. He will say it because stifling those words is no longer a possibility, he has been bursting at the seams. He will say it because even if it were, he will want Tian to know the enormity of his feelings. He will say it, and Tian will lean forward to capture their hands together. Tian will say, I love you too. I love you, so much.
For now, they entwine their fingers and make their way to the village that welcomes them as its own.

okay you finally opened your ask 😩 4. Favorite moment in the show 16. Favorite teacher!tian moment 22. The moment that made you cry the most 28. Opinions on dr nam
fjoeijef I had this tumblr since 2017 and I forgot about toggling the asks I-. Thank you to Orthy for this brillant ask-game. You can find the post here.  4. Favorite moment in the show  Why is this question so difficult to answer? I think I could write wessays on so many scenes. At first I thought I would pick Phupha asking Tian to live for himself but if I really have to choose, I’d say the hornbill scene. There is something about the innocence of Phutian in this scene. How did they manage to impact so muchs stuff in such a short moment? Foreshadowing purposes aside, you get so much of phutian’s characters and their blossoming romance. There is such an interesting contrast; it’s telling the audience that we are following an epic, once-in-a-lifetime romance but at the same time it’s just a tender moment between two men on their first date-ish, slowy opening more to each other. Also, there’s something with Phutian in nature. I absolutely think that there is something about Phutian with/in nature but an intellectual should probably be the one putting words to it.
16. Favorite teacher!tian moment.  I think it’s teaching the kids how to cook in episode 9  and specifically putting the focus on one of the kids because he knows he wants to be a chef. Something tells me it’s something Tian would do for each and every kid in his class. He would spend time on the passions and ambitions of each of them. I love that, it’s such a supportive thing to do. I also love how Tian is putting all his energy on making the most of his last days with the kids as memorable as possible. (Barber Tian comes in close second).
22. The moments that made you cry the most.  Although there are objectively sadder moments like Phutian saying goodbye to each other on the cliff, I think the scene that made my eyes the most moist (im sorry for using that word) was episode 8′s post credit scene. I think it’s mostly because the direction of this whole episode was brillant. The orchestra swelling in that scene, the choice to put that scene after Phupha getting shot and Tian thinking he could lose him? Damn, they were so happy at this moment because Tian has gotten the closest thing to a confession of love and adoration he could get from Phupha and Phupha was certain that he did not have to come back to an empty room anymore (or for quite a while). Earth’s acting in this scene is his best in the whole series and his vulnerability got to me. It’s also the knowledge that everything goes sideways just after this.
28.Opinions on Dr. Nam.   I WOULD MAKE DR. JIB HAPPIER THAN HE DOES.  I absolutely love his friendship with Phupha and I think we all need a friend like him in our lives but I don’t think I could have liked him as much if he had not apologized to Tian at the hospital. I loved this scene. In general, I love his level-headedness, his humor, his compassion and how he naturally cares for everyone around him.  I’d still steal his girlfriend away from him.
