Ok I need to vent about "LIKES DO NOTHING" discourse because I have had Thoughts for months now.
These are just feelings without much coherent thought put into them so lmk if I get something wrong. (LONG POST WARNING)
I'm gonna start by saying that I agree with the message that's INTENDED to be spread. Letting people know that reblogs are an important and essential part of Tumblr's ecosystem is good! Tumblr not having (much of, anyway) an algorithm is an important part to emphasize to newcomers of the website. And I know *why* people prefer getting reblogs to likes on their art purely from an exposure angle: reblogs expose the art to more people, who will themselves maybe like it and reblog it to more people.
That being said, the way people act about likes is... genuinely bothersome to me. There's a really fucking weird framing of likes as literally The Worst Thing Ever. Like you're a complete and utter monster for having the gall to show appreciation for their work. And all that really does is make ppl feel guilty about how they curate their blog. "Why would they not reblog the work then, if they like it???" Well there's many reasons! They might not want to share nsfw content to their followers. They might not want to spoil their followers with fanart of the latest episode of a show. They might have specific criteria for reblogging! Maybe they have a family member following them, and they don't want to be outed for liking queer stuff! I don't think anyone particularly owes anyone an explanation for liking only.
"Why not use a side blog to reblog then, if any of the above apply?" Because that blog won't have the followers of that other blog? Why would you want someone to reblog from a dummy account, if that account has nearly nobody following them? That would be defeating the purpose of the reblog in the first place; all you'd get out of it is an extra Note, which makes it functionally indistinguishable from a like.
Now I want to focus on the one thing that annoys me the most about the framing of this discourse: the idea that people only like because they think it'll boost the engagement. This is why I think people say ridiculous stuff like "likes do nothing". Well, let me tell you something. C'mere real close.
LIKES ARE FOR LIKING THINGS.
It's in the NAME! People "like" things to show their appreciation for a piece of art/meme/etc! I highly doubt that people who only like art do so with the delusion that what they actually help the artist get more exposure, even on other social media websites. The average layperson leaves a like to show they enjoyed a post. That's it. They don't think about The Algorithm, they just see post and hit like. That's how people act on other social media websites, and I'd wager even a good chunk of "old-hat" Tumblr users do this too.
Are they in the wrong for doing that? Well I think that varies from person to person, but I personally appreciate any interaction on an art post. Sure, reblogs get more eyes on things, and that's highly valuable to get even more likes, so I absolutely do love getting reblogs, but I'm not about to get mad at every single person who likes without reblogs. I also just think that's a very unhealthy attitude to have about art in general, which leads me to my next point:
The internet as a whole just... sucks for artists. It's an annoying and unfortunate truth, but this feeling of "oh my work doesn't get nearly enough attention as I wish it did"? I've experienced it everywhere I posted content to. Whether that was DeviantArt or Twitter or w/e, it's always been the same thing. I don't tend to accrue a lot of followers for the work I do in general, and that means that my content will only get a handful of engagements, if any at all. And I know a lot of other artists face that issue, and it's because of a very simple fact: THERE IS SO MUCH ART ONLINE. Fact of the matter is, you're gonna be fighting against others for exposure, and luck is basically the only real way people can break out of that initial circle.
And on a similar lane: fanart and memes just get more interaction as a whole because they are more "shareable". Memes are just easy to share because they're funny and very accessible to most people. Fanart isn't as accessible, but it still has a potential audience if your follower base has enough fans in it, or if you're friends with ppl who like similar things to that work. But original art just doesn't have as much of a shareability. You'd think they would be more accessible by virtue of not being tied to a fandom... but because it's not tied to something people can easily search, original art gets decimated in the interactions department, unless you have a pre-existing fanbase.
I don't think this is a problem with an easy solution. And I certainly don't think shaming people is going to be the way, tbh.
But wouldn't this be all the more reason to push back and demand that people to reblog and not just like? Well... on to my next point: The Internet at large has rarely looked kindly upon those who beg for attention and interactions. People literally make fun of calls to actions on YouTube, after all. So I fear people are going to turn on people who post things like "reblogs > likes" and whatnot. I've already noticed a good amount of people beginning to get actively mad towards this sort of attitude, and passive-aggressive polls that are like "do YOU support our reblogs in blue????". I don't think this aggressive reblog shaming trend is going to end well IMO.
But reblogs are the life source of Tumblr, right? If people don't want to reblog... then won't that kill the site? Well... I guess that's the tricky spot: for artists that need commissions to make a living, there's a genuine reason for wanting art to be shared. Exposure translates to commissions for them. And if they can't get exposure, they'll have to turn towards other means of making a living. And if a lot of artists have to stop making art or leave Tumblr... then yeah that would suck for the site. Like, don't get me wrong, as annoyed as I am towards how weirdly petty these posts are, I understand why they're made. And I'm all for encouraging more support to artists, but this ain't it y'all.
So how can we promote supporting artists without shaming? Well... here's some suggestions:
Let's stop this weird culture around shaming likes. This isn't getting anywhere and it's only gonna make people turn away from interacting with art at all. Can you imagine if YouTubers started getting angry at people who don't leave a like or subscribe? Like, genuinely making passive aggressive posts and videos about them? That would be wack, right? So let's not be like that.
Second, I think that emphasizing the GOOD that reblogs can do should be encouraged. Examples: "Reblogs get more eyes on art! If you really like an artist's content, reblog it and it might lead to that artist getting more followers! If you reblog, you're doing your part in helping an artist get exposure!" People want to feel like they're doing a good thing, so help them see the good that reblogging does, rather than lecturing on the evils of not doing so.
Third... do your part! Go look for artists who don't have a lot of interactions, and reblog their work! Spending your energy interacting with fellow artists, making connections, and supporting each other's work is going to do so much more in the long run than trying to fight a losing battle with General Internet Apathy. Besides, a reblog from asspissballs69 isn't going to have nearly as much of an impact as a reblog from someone who actually has a following. Tumblr doesn't have algorithms, but follower counts do still matter even if we can't see them.
Fourth, if we wish to actually change the hearts and minds of "Serial Likers", we need to actually understand why people like in the first place. One point I can think of is that people who come in from other social media may be afraid to spam their followers with things they like. I think that's absolutely an aspect of Tumblr that doesn't really carry over as well to other websites, and putting more emphasis on that should be done. Personally, this was my biggest obstacle to embracing reblogging fanart. So I think having more empathy and understanding of the issue, and addressing concerns these people may have would go a long way in helping us make the case for reblogging.
If you've read this far, thanks for engaging with this rambly post! If you have objections to the arguments I make, feel free to reply but BE CIVIL and constructive. I *will* block people who get aggressive or read in bad faith.

It has been a hot fucking minute. Shit.
Never thought I would see myself back here on Tumblr for anything substantial - besides the sapphic p8rn ( *sigh* to be young and unknowingly queer again. Would have definitely seized the day a bit better. Hindsight my friends. Hindsight).
But here I am committing and diving head first into writing. This thing that I have done all my life but convinced myself that I didn’t know how to do for one reason or another - main reason being grammar. Second reason being that I didn’t feel confident (re: cool) enough to use big words and engage with highly politicized conversations like the alt queer black hotties of my original Tumblr heyday.
But yeah, I am mostly back because I am tired. I am overwhelmed and overstimulated by the ads and the curating. I feel like the world is energetically transforming before, and behind, my eyes and I just don’t care to keep up with the pretense. But I feel very much inclined to continue to talk into the social ether.
Wtf is a social ether you might ask...?
To me the social ether is like the cloud. It is this arbitrary concept that we cant explain how it does what it does, who controls it, question its necessity but over all understand its double edged purpose and how it fits into society. The social ether is really just my more dramatic way of calling this place the internet or social media.
Anyway, I have a lot on my mind these days and I am here to share it. A lot of it will include the black experience, questioning societal values, healing and fantasizing about how we shift the power dynamics from the few to the many.  Ya know, just regular lowkey “non-revolutionary” things. But I still love to look at pretty things and I am too lazy to set up a wordpress so I am here on Tumblr - especially since there is a character limit on twitter.
I am honestly down to be anywhere that doesn’t talk about keeping up with the algorithm or feeling pressured to post everyday. It’s nice here. It is weird to describe a social platform in this way but it seems quiet here. It should be a nice place for social refuge in many ways - I will give it until summer before the girls swarm back.
But yeah that is a bit of where my mind is at and the things I will be discussing here. I always love playing around with ways to get my point across so expect poetry, short stories - I love personifying different forms of consciousness like money or mother nature, podcast (for when I don’t feel like typing). I am sorry but it literally feels so good to be writing this. I feel no pressure to conform or seem witty or different. This feels so nice. It is giving little miss orphan annie.
🎶I think I am going to like it here🎶

So having been on tiktok for a bit I wanna talk a little about it.
What I like
It’s actually rather entertaining to scroll through up to 30 second videos one after the other. Sometimes the humor falls flat or it’s not your taste, but the algorithim is quite good at recommending the kind of content you will like.
I joined right when there was a big trend going around about sharing your culture, and soon after a Blackout trend where non-Black creators stopped posting for a day & spread/supported videos by Black creators. So I ended up with a fairly diverse fyp or “for you page”. It also quickly gathered that I am bisexual, so I get plenty of lgbt+ content. There’s some art mixed in there, some cosplay, some historical costuming/seamstresses, lots of avatar jokes lately, musical theatre content, fashion, girls in bikinis on rollerskates (in outer space), commentary on political issues, body positivity, all the kinds of stuff I like. To get a feed that caters to your interests you just have to watch & like videos you’re interested in & eventually it gets a feel for what you’ll watch and what you won’t.
Theres a trend where people say which ‘side’ of tiktok they’re on and I get ‘science side of tumblr’ flashbacks but I’ve mostly avoided the “straight” and conservative sides of tiktok. I would be considered a part of “woke”, “alt” (as in alternative) and lgbt+ tiktok (there are separate ones for each letter of the acronym). Possibly also “theatre” and “cosplay” tiktok. These categories are nebulous and you’re usually part of multiple communities; its just as arbitray as ‘science side of tumblr’ was.
The format reminds me of snapchat a little, and I love to talk to myself on video & post dumb thirst traps for my friends (none of which I’m attracted to so idk what my goal is there) and make stupid jokes. So this app is kinda perfect for my attention seeking side & hyperactive tendencies. Its very easy to consume on a short attention span, though not as easy as vine was.
Being in quarantine, its a way for a lot of people to engage in hobbies that involve community. Cosplay is pretty popular, as its a fun way to show off a costume & dress up & have fun without having to attend a convention. I enjoy the way lip synced audios can be used to emulate the character someone is dressed as; that’s something you couldn’t really do unless you were really good at impressions. Its a nice succinct way to show the process of creating a cosplay as well.
Those who enjoy theatre, but cannot perform in shows at this time, are able to create mini-monologues & sketches as well as sing parts of their favorite songs. Its an avenue through which to perform without putting anyone at risk of the virus. It’s also an easy way to show off your talents without having to go through the audition process & actually get cast in a show as a prominent enough role that someone will notice it.
It’s a convenient format for discourse and educational videos. Nice, short, easily digestible tidbits that stay in your mind. This extremely catchy song, for example: “Black neighborhoods are overpoliced, so of course they have higher rates of crime, and white perpetrators are undercharged, so of course they have lower rates of crime. And all of those stupid stats you keep using are operating off a small sample size. So, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up”.
As well as other videos where people take the time to explain historical events, satirize racist arguments to demonstrate why they are wrong, talk about prevalent tropes in movies, teach a few signs in ASL, share facts about their culture, etc, etc. I have found there are quite a lot of people there from unique and fairly unknown cultures and backgrounds- and this is a place where they’re able to share their culture & existence with people all over the world. There are a thousand different viewpoints. Their videos are doing far more for diverse representation than any other platform, I’d argue, as everyone is extremely visible on the app. (‘Their’ as in the creators, not the app itself).
I also have enjoyed coming across new artists on the app. It’s really fun to watch the process they go through, as most art videos deal with the whole creation of a piece. It’s inspiring. I have also come across a painter who’s work I’m in love with, and a woman who makes and sells the CUTEST ceramic mugs, and I need to purchase some stuff from them both.
Now onto the bad:
Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have much in the way of a filtering or warning system. I talked about that tiktok of the kids coming across human remains? That was just on people’s fyp. Just popped up. No warning. No reason for it to still be up. Traumatizing.
You can click on a video and say ‘not interested’ (I do this to literally every video I get where some girl is thirsting after kylo ren 🤮..... like I want the star wars videos just not THOSE videos). However, it doesn’t seem to know exactly why you weren’t interested, because I still get those videos from time to time. There’s no content filter where I can blacklist the kylo ren or any other hashtag.
There’s some very shitty content. There are racist conservatives. Misogynistic teen white boys. Really weird thirst traps. Videos where people lip sync to something with a straight face and tag it with #acting. Harmful body image trends. I thankfully stay very clear of this, but this kind of content makes me worry for the minors on the app. The one’s who don’t have enough of a concept of self yet to realize they don’t need to be able to do the newest pointless beauty trend to be beautiful, to realize it’s ok for them to be gay, to realize how predatory some adults can be, etc etc.
It is extremely easy to come across minors on the app who don’t look like teens. One time I went to a girl’s page and it said she was FIFTEEN. I’m usually good at guessing ages but something about this app messes that up. I wish there was a way to separate people under 18 and adults. Where I don’t have minor’s thirst traps popping up on my fyp. Where pedophiles don’t get a chance to curate that fyp intentionally. If anyone reading this has kids, I highly recommend they make their tiktok private or only viewable to friends.
Just like any site, there are plenty of bigots. Lots of racist comments. Plenty of transphobia. Any hatred you’ve seen elsewhere, of course it exists on tiktok. I have actually zero clue if you can report people & if it works. Most people seem to send a video commentary to their haters or duet a video of a racist pointing out their racism. I’ve heard of creators blocking people, however. I remember a tiktok of a Black woman who’s video somehow went fairly viral in Poland and now she gets a lot of racist comments from this large group of random racisf Polish followers she has and its extremely time consuming to block them all, as there’s no mass block feature.
The rumors about what works with the algorithm and doesn’t abound. I’ve heard well lit videos get more views. Many people suspect they have been shadowbanned for speaking out about current events. TikTok will remove the audio from videos sometimes if they deem it controversial enough. Most of us know they were criticized recently for intentionally keeping Black creator’s videos from being seen (a catalyst for the Blackout, actually). Or you may also recall when it was criticized for widely removing lgbt+ content. Those creators are fighting to be seen the same amount as straight cis white creators are allowed to be seen with no effort.
The effects some trends could have on teen girls. So many of them are already so uncomfortable in their own skin simply because of societal standards, but the absolutely meaningless challenges people come up with on tiktok make it so much worse. One trend was based around whether your finger touched your lips when you put it in your nose. Or if you could get your clasped hands around the back of your legs and over your butt (if they get passed, you have a flat ass, if they get stuck, its big). These completely arbitrary signifiers of the things you need to have in order to be pretty, are far more ridiculous that anything I have seen yet in my life. I worry about little girls taking these ideas to heart. There is a very kind body positive community on the app & I hope more people can find that.
There’s also that thing where they steal your data. Like most apps. But apparently they got a lot more invasive than usual, so I would look into it before making an account; if you want to do that.
I think the apps users can be great & its a pretty intuitive set up. It certainly deserves its popularity solely as a creative form of social media. That being said, its owners are so so insidious & do the worst things. Just like all other social media, its controlled by the worst kind of people. Who can never figure out how to effectively get rid of nazis or keep kids safe from adult content.
These are my less serious gripes with the app:
1) Lip syncing
When people lip sync and don’t do any kind of skit, joke, etc, just look as if they’re saying what someone else said; I hate that. I have to go back and find the original tiktok so I can like it instead. You literally did nothing interesting by ripping off someones audio and moving your lips along to it. So many people on this app are creative and so many others lack any semblance of creativity.
Also people are too easily impressed by lip syncing to kinda-fast songs. I lip synced to like....10 seconds of the devil went down to georgia and two people praised my lip syncing abilities. Like, I can also sing and talk fast, out loud, isn’t that more impressive? more skillful? The fiddle playing in that song is impressive, not the fact I can lip sync ‘the devil went down to georgia, he was lookin for a soul to steal, he was in a bind, cause he was way behind.’ Have you ever seen someone play Johnny’s fiddle solo????? It’s insane!!!
Rather than see someone lip sync to the verse in Stressed Out 2x faster than normal (which is, extremely simple and the song was overplayed and ingrained into our collective consciousness) and go WOW what about someone.....doing the verse out loud. You can litterally just mouth random words and look like you’re saying the right ones. It’s driving me crazy lmao. I’m set to become a God of tiktok because I have a repertoire of fast songs and rap verses memorized. It’s not even an uncommon skill to speak or sing quickly, people literally make rap music for a living! Listen to it maybe.
2) “Acting”
I am begging you to stop making me sit through those horrible POVs. I cannot take another girl not quite fake crying towards the camera as she lip syncs the words from a song that apply to the random situation she decided she was in. I cannot take another boy who thinks its sexy to stare into a camera and smirk in every single situation he creates.
Back to lip syncing, making facial expressions along to words isn’t really acting. Try saying the words out loud perhaps? The inflection you use with your lines is a pretty big part of acting. Like you can lip sync all you want, just stop tagging it with #acting.
3) Comedic timing, or lack thereof
You don’t need the entire intro to sit there looking at the camera waiting until the first line starts and you can lip sync to the part that’s the joke. You could cut off at least 15 seconds. Brevity is the soul of wit.
When your joke involves both reading text on screen and listening to the song for the punchline, if it isn’t done prefectly, its so difficult to follow. I can’t read a paragraph in 5 seconds. Paraphrase.
4) self deprecating artist audio
the audio thats like ‘this wont get views’ ‘I suck’ ‘you probably won’t see this anyway’ LOVE YOURSELF
It sucks when people dont enagage with your art but it sucks worse when your value in yourself and you art is based solely on receiving that validation. Please find a healthy medium.
Also you’re asking for pity, and you don’t want that. You want people who genuinely love your art for what it is.
5) editing videos is really hard how do you make such cool & smooth transitions????
please help me I don’t understand
Finally
here’s my account if you’re interested

Submission from literalapologyblog + some thoughts re: GOT/Marvel/writing
“(too long for askbox, so sending as submission)
Hey, I left a dickish comment on a post you made (via defunct blog, “beewinged”), and I’m sorry. I just literally created a whole new account and painstakingly tracked down your url again to say that, because it was bugging me that much.
I was really into fandom and tumblr for a few years, and pulled out of it completely when one particular fandom went sour with drama and hatefulness. Hate directed at showrunners, between fans– a lot of it using the guise of progressive language.
I removed myself from fandom and social media entirely and pretty successfully, because I hate communicating with people in soundbites and hate how communities like tumblr (for all their upsides) make it easy for users to “curate” a personality and set of opinions with the click of a button.
And it took all of a few days scrolling the Endgame tag for me to go right back to a place of casual, de-personalizing interactions (two comments, the other one being, “this take bums me out”– but still two comments too many).
I saw about fifty posts that compared Endgame to GoT S8; yours wasn’t that unusual. Tags on tumblr, by design, highly concentrate extreme emotion and stimulus. Social media doesn’t care what it’s doing to compassionate discourse. Rationally, I know this! – but seeing post after post talking about writers and creatives, human people with families, as if they had committed war crimes– seeing “fuck the Russos”, “these writers are basically the same people as these writers”, treating “the Russos” like some kind of malicious entity or, worse, seeing anti-colonialist director of color Taika Waititi referred to as “a bag of racid dicks” (in the name of protecting the integrity of a made-up person) made it all too easy for me to perceive individual posts as a part of a vicious hivemind obsessed with its fandom reality-bubble.
I think there are some good criticisms of Endgame. I also felt and still feel that the writing in Endgame (flawed but thematically consistent, focuses on Tony’s arc to the exclusion of others, because his– for better or for worse– is the strongest) doesn’t bear comparison with the hasty and thoughtless writing of GoT’s last few episodes.
That opinion is not what I expressed in my comment on your post. I wasn’t starting a conversation in good faith (something I’ve tried very hard to hold myself to, in real life and when I do make posts online). I essentially expressed, “*you*, a part of a hivemind, are mad because the thing you wanted didn’t happened, and *you* are fronting like that’s ‘bad writing’”.
That’s a very personal accusation, and a really incendiary and unfair thing to say to someone on the basis of one post, ever if it reflects a generalized feeling I have about online fandom. I let my momentary irritation get the better of me, and focused it on you. It wasn’t the most unkind thing I’ve ever said, but that doesn’t rankle any less.
So: I’m sure you do have strong feelings about stories and opinions about storytelling, and I’m sure they are worth listening to, that you have people in your life who enjoy hearing your thoughts, and that the best and most complex of your thoughts can’t be gleaned from just scrolling through your tumblr.
You might have a thicker skin than I do, and maybe didn’t give my comment a second thought– but I’m sorry if, for even a second, it made you feel dismissed or hurt or misunderstood. You could be any number of people who, in “real” life, I’d never speak to so dismissively. I hope you continue to write, enjoy and engage with stories.”
First off, I want to apologise for taking a few days to post this. I saw this in my submission box and wanted to thoroughly think over it before I replied. I’ve since seen that the blog has been deactivated, but I wanted to post this in the hopes you might stumble across my response, because I do appreciate you going to the effort to find me again… It’s a serious effort! And rarely do people apologise for ‘dickish’ comments haha
First off, I understand anyone who wishes to take time away from fandoms, especially when things get toxic and experiences get ruined by it. For me personally, I have a tendency to just avoid those blogs/tags. There was certain things I don’t go near, and certain posts that I might read, internally disagree with, and move on. I’ve spent a lot less time on Twitter and Instagram lately, and I’m feeling better for it too.
In short, do I think that there are rightful comparisons to make between the writers at Marvel and GOT? Yes. Do I think that makes it okay for us to talk excessive smack about the Russos/TW? No. While my criticisms for the Russos and TW run deep, I never condone death threats or unnecessary insults. On one post in particular, I’ve ‘gone off’ on some comment the Russos made regarding fan reactions to Loki’s death. Nothing other than calling them ‘fucking eejits’, but cursing is used more casually here in Ireland, so maybe that’s why I use it as such. But yeah, other than that, I don’t agree with the notion of wishing death or serious harm on these people, and I think most people would agree with that. Criticise them all day, if it’s valid, but anything else is a bit… excessive. I certainly do think that there are far more valid criticisms floating about instead of death threats, but the harsh stuff is always going to jump out the most.
I agree with a lot of what you say - while there are definitely valid criticisms to be made about Endgame, it’s not an awful or bad film, and there are definitely more examples of poor and lazy writing in the last season of GOT. As someone who was in love with that show for a good five seasons, it was sad to see it go the way it did. I did, however, jump ship after some very telling and dramatic writing choices they made in season five. By my logic at the time, “if they will do x now, they’ll most definitely do y and z later”, and it’s never fun when that realisation comes to fruition. That being said, I still strongly believe that Marvel dropped the ball with some of my favourite characters in Endgame (Loki, Steve, Tony, Bucky, Thor). I think they did great by some characters, and terrible by others. But that’s probably a discussion for another post - most of my feelings have been far better explained in posts by other blogs!
“I essentially expressed, “*you*, a part of a hivemind, are mad because the thing you wanted didn’t happened, and *you* are fronting like that’s ‘bad writing’”.” If I’m being honest, this is absolutely nothing new to me haha. As a Loki fan and someone quite critical of the last season of GOT, I’m well used to people telling me “you’re just mad because your fave died!” and “you just don’t like it because it’s not the ending you wanted!” I think any Loki fan can attest to that too. It sucks, but if someone replies to me in that way, I don’t even bother continuing the conversation. You’ve already reached a wall before the conversation can start. I recently had a chat with a friend who I falsely assumed would cut me off in a similar manner, and it was amazingly refreshing to have my opinion heard and not automatically shut off because I’m a “Loki fangirl”. For me, Endgame just proved that my favourite character’s ending in IW was badly written, badly executed, pointless other than being motivation for Thor, and just overall illogical and out of character. Much like most Dany fans don’t mind her character becoming a mad queen, I don’t mind if Loki dies. My issue is how we get there and how badly executed it was in terms of writing. The actors themselves obviously put their hearts into what I would consider a weak story point. It seemed careless, much like Dany’s characterisation... “How do we get there exactly? Ah, who cares, just do it and get it over with. People will watch it and we’ll make money anyway.”. Can you imagine if they had screwed up Iron Man’s arc in the same manner? The backlash would’ve been insane!
I do of course apologise if I’ve ever some across as someone who just shits on Marvel, because that’s not who I am. I grew up being a massive Spider Man fan as a kid, and these heroes and films will always have a place in my heart, but I’m still going to critique something even if I love it. If anything, I think it’s even more important to acknowledge flaws in your favourite things. I’m certainly not right in ever instance, and I don’t think I know everything there is to know about writing!
My main hope from all of this is just that future writers learn from these mistakes and become better writers because of it.
I genuinely appreciate the fact you went to the trouble to find my blog again apologise, because it’s something that I see rarely. I hadn’t paid much attention to your original comment, but your apology is valued and appreciated. It’s honestly something I don’t usually receive amidst a sea of “yOu’rE JUst mAD bEcAUse yOuR faVE DieD!!”
Likewise I hope that you continue to express your own thoughts and opinions on writing in an articulate manner, and hopefully you see less of those posts that proper do your head in! Thank you for explaining your point of view to me, and thick skin or not, apologies and calm conversations always go a long way.

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikToks and Instagram?
Tumblr media
This topic honestly brings me back memories of the time I actually used to blog back in early secondary school, and no, I am not going to expose my actual blog to you guys here because just no. I ain't got time to feel embarrassed because I have my FYP to deal with :").
Anyway, let's get back to the question by starting of with the definition of blog and its origins.
__________________________________________
Blogging seemed to have been replaced by the development of social media, video sharing, and streaming (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, Facebook). However, in my opinion, I do not believe that blogging has truly been replaced but instead, it has evolved.
Tumblr media
What is blogging?
A blog is a type of online journal where people write about things that are important to them. Many individuals use it as a journal, some even blog for a living. There are many different kinds of reasons why people blog:
· Expressing their feelings
· Sharing interesting knowledge they have learned and wishes to learn together with the rest of the world
· Making a profit out of it

History of Blog
The word "blog" is actually a short form from its original name, "weblog". In the mid-1990s, online diaries grew into personal websites, which became blogs. Because there were limited materials on the internet at the time, people posted regular updates about their personal lives, things they were interested in, etc. By the late 1990s, blogging systems had emerged to enable people to post their blogs without having to bother about coding. In 1998, Open Diary debuted, followed by Blogger, LiveJournal and then the current Tumblr.
Has TikTok and Instagram replaced blogging?
Back when I used to blog, it was really tiring to actually put in a lot of effort because I always had to think about the kind of content I would like to post, alongside with images and videos.
Tumblr media
It is a known fact that technology is indeed disruptive. The social media format has dominated all other formats of blog delivery over the last decade. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and other social media platforms did not become famous by focusing just on photos and videos. Their popularity stems from the social media format, where discussion, collaboration and interaction thrive.
Let's first talk about Instagram and then the annoying TikTok
1. Instagram
Tumblr media
Instagram was created in 2010 and it first started out as a place for people to share contents of their daily lives. It could be a picture of you breakfast, lunch, dinner, a picture of your cat sleeping, or even a picture of you and your friends clubbing like mad people at the nightclub. Bloggers used Instagram as a way to promote their blogs, however, it was not really successful as Instagram does not allow captions to have clickable links (Unlike Facebook). At the most these bloggers could do was to put "Link in bio" as their caption so viewers will have to go to their profile for the link (A pain in the butt really -_-, and it is)
In this current generation, Instagram has transformed into a platform of highly curated images that literally looked like they are straight out of a magazine. People who took advantage of this platform became Instagrammers, influencers and content creators. Some bloggers may have migrated to instagram but honestly speaking, reading an instagram post is so much different from reading an actual blog.
2. TikTok
Before I start explaining about TikTok, I would like to clarify that I am NOT a fan of TikTok. Reason being is that I always come across cringy and stupid videos which made me question the amount of stupidity these kind of "content creators" have.
Tumblr media
Anyway, TikTok was created in 2016 and it allows people to create and share a 15 second video about anything. Yes, literally anything. They can either be  interesting to watch or just not interesting to watch at all. Younger kids in this generation love watching or creating TikTok content so much because their attention span is just that short. If you ask them to read a detailed blog, they’ll most likely going to say “It’s boring...” and then proceed to do their own thing.
Now, comparing blog to TikTok, there’s no way anyone can recreate a blog into a 15 second video because THAT’S JUST IMPOSSIBLE. If someone is able to do this, they are doing it wrong, UNLESS, they make it into different episodes (I guess you can say it like that?)
Also, if you haven’t noticed, Instagram also have this video feature called Instagram Reels, which is, you could say, it’s a ripoff of TikTok.
So where does this leave blogging?
Tumblr media
(Yes, the gif above says “If you say blogging is dead, I will slice you into salami pieces)
I will say it again: Blogging is not dead, it has just evolved. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become more accessible as a microblog. To do an actual blog, you have to create a domain, pay the host, finding the perfect theme and widgets to suit your blog. Compare to those microblogging platforms, all you need to do is just to sign up and you are ready to post anything.
Even for vlogging, basically blogging but in a video format, can easily reach out to a bigger audience because the audience are already there.
So for people like me who love to read and write a lot (I don’t read and write as much now because I’m a design student oops), they would actually start blogging and share whatever that was on their mind and then publish it to the audience who share the similar love for reading and writing.
And that being said, what do you think about this topic?

Are Disposables the Future of Photo Sharing? Dispo, a new photo-sharing app that mimics the experience of using a disposable camera, is taking off. People are clamoring for invites to test the beta version. Early adopters are praising its social features. And investors are betting big on its future. In the app, users frame photographs through a small rectangular viewfinder. There are no editing tools or captions; when the images “develop” — i.e. show up on your phone at 9 a.m. the next day — you get what you get. Multiple people can take photos on the same roll, as might happen with a real disposable camera at a party. “When I used to go to parties with my friends, they would have disposable cameras all throughout the house, and they’d urge people to take pictures throughout the night,” said David Dobrik, a YouTube star and a founder of the app. “In the morning, they’d collect all the cameras and look back at the footage and be like, ‘What happened last night?’” (He used an expletive for emphasis.) He and his friends loved the serendipity of scrolling through fleeting and forgotten moments. “It would be like the ending of ‘The Hangover’ every morning,” Mr. Dobrik, 24, said. He started posting his developed photographs on a dedicated Instagram account in June 2019, and quickly racked up millions of followers. Other influencers and celebrities, including Tana Mongeau and Gigi Hadid, soon started their own “disposable” accounts; their fans followed suit. Sensing a trend, Mr. Dobrik sought to recreate the disposable-camera experience digitally, as an antidote to the obsession with getting the perfect shot. “You never looked at the picture, you never checked the lighting,” he said of using disposables. “You just went on with your day, and in the morning you got to relive it.” In December 2019, he introduced a photo app called David’s Disposable, through which people could take retro-looking pictures that “developed” overnight. Its early following suggested that the model had bigger potential. So, over the course of a year, it was developed into Dispo, a full-fledged social network that began beta testing with the public last Friday. Though Dispo’s latest version has only been available to the public for less than a week, it’s already generating buzz. The app climbed the ranks in Apple’s App Store this week. Dispo-themed discussion rooms have popped up on Clubhouse. YouTubers are sharing reviews, tips for scoring invites and growth hacks. Just as VSCO gave rise to the VSCO girl, Dispo has produced a stable of “Dispo boys.” Some photos from Dispo have even hit the online art market as NFTs, or “nonfungible tokens.” The app’s beta users have lauded its restraint. “I feel like photos are just simpler,” said Goldie Chan, 38, the founder of Warm Robots, a social strategy agency in Los Angeles. “Apps like Clubhouse are so much noise, literally. When you have something like Dispo or VSCO, you’re just taking pictures. You can snap a moment in time and let it go.” This shift away from highly curated feeds has been in the works for several years. In 2019, the rise of “relatable” YouTubers like Emma Chamberlain helped pioneer a goofy and irreverent editing style that became the default for Gen Z. And throughout 2020, TikTok gave birth to a new wave of creators focused more on personality than perfection. “Where Instagram filters in 2011 made everyone beautiful, TikTok filters in 2021 make everyone ugly,” Rex Woodbury, a principal at Index Ventures, recently wrote. “And where Instagram gave you filters to help your bad photos look good, Dispo purposefully makes your good photos look worse.” Anyha Garcia, a 31-year-old stay-at-home mom in Utah, started using Dispo a week ago. She’s a fan of its simplicity. “I don’t have to sit and crop it or edit it,” she said. “I take a pic, and hopefully it turns out. I can go back and look at it later instead of looking at it now and making these tweaks or worrying about taking 10 to 12 more photos of that thing I’m trying to take a picture of.” People have also taken to the app’s emphasis on collaboration. “Insta made everyone a general photographer. Dispo makes you a photographer with a purpose,” said Terry O’Neal, 31, a brand manager in Los Angeles who has been using the app. He has created several color-themed camera rolls and asked other users to help him find objects that fit each theme. “That’s where the community building is, everyone looking for the same thing through their own lens,” he said. “The big thing with Dispo is the collaborative rolls,” said Luke Yun, 31, a social media director in Los Angeles. “People are finding ways to be creative together. It’s like an innate contest to out-create each other in these community rolls that I haven’t seen before on any social network.” Though Dispo’s photos don’t have captions, the comment sections of collaborative camera rolls can be lively. There are rolls where people are invited to guess the story behind each photo, or comment with song lyrics they feel match the mood of an image. Another roll features photos of handwritten notes meant to spark conversation. The social network has avoided the spammy growth-hack culture that often emerges on early-stage apps, and Easter eggs in its display poke fun at the obsession with boosting one’s metrics. Mr. Dobrik, for instance, appears to have 69 million followers and photos and 420 likes on Dispo. Small creator collectives have emerged, however. “I created a roll called the Dispo Hype Group where we were adding everyone and accepting everyone’s invite,” Ms. Garcia said. The group, which includes about 40 people, is hoping to organize an IRL meet-up when it’s safe to do so. Dispo has already begun expanding internationally, especially in Japan, where the company plans to open an office. Though it’s currently only an eight-person company, the start-up’s rapid expansion has made it an appealing target for venture capitalists. In a seed funding round in October, led by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s firm Seven Seven Six, Dispo raised $4 million. This week, the company raised $20 million at a $200 million valuation in a Series A funding round led by Spark Capital, according to Axios. Dispo has also held talks with other major venture firms, including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and Benchmark, according to The Information. As the app continues to grow, Dispo’s leaders have expressed a commitment to ensuring that the app remains a safe and open space for its users. “Trust and safety is something that is incredibly important to us and will be a relentless focus,” said Daniel Liss, 32, Dispo’s C.E.O. “Saying we don’t have a position on trust and safety is not good enough. To our community and shareholders it’s unacceptable.” “It’s a position I’m hiring for before any investor has asked me about it because it’s important to me, David and our team,” he added. Though there will always be competition and copycats, Mr. Dobrik believes what Dispo offers is something that photo filters can’t replicate. “When you see a disposable photo you know it’s real and it wasn’t crafted or put together,” he said. “It just happened and it was captured. That’s what makes it so exciting.” Source link Orbem News #Disposables #Future #photo #sharing

Finstas make online dating so much more complicated
Tumblr media
In our Love App-tually series, Mashable shines a light into the foggy world of online dating. It is cuffing season after all.
I will never again let someone I'm dating follow my finsta.
That's a sentiment that countless finsta users have when establishing emotional boundaries. In relationships built on intertwined online and in-person interactions, it's often a point of contention.
If you haven't been initiated into the bizarre world of niche memes and astrology tag posts, a finsta is a secondary, private Instagram account used to keep snarky screenshots, rant about your personal life, and post (mostly) risqué selfies that would leave the family members who follow your main account absolutely appalled. Finsta followers are usually a highly curated selection of close friends who wouldn't judge you for your bizarre one-night stands, validate you when you're feeling yourself, and support you when your mental health dips.
If a single group text represented only one circle of friends, then a finsta would be the overlapping portion of a Venn diagram. Friend groups don't always overlap, but on your finsta, you can access all of their unrelenting support on one platform.
Finsta really does teach you a lot. You find out who cheating, who hoeing, who got played and who depressed etc. Need help making a life decision? Ask your finsta, need help on an outfit?? FINSTA
— Tashie🌻 (@_NatashaMarie_) January 31, 2019
But when it comes to romance, deciding whose follow requests to approve can get hairy.
I personally have had a finsta for longer than any relationship I've been in and allowing a partner to follow it ended in disaster. In my case, I forgot to block the now ex from my finsta after we broke up. I posted a screenshot from a funny Tinder conversation with someone else weeks later. I woke up to a seething late night call from the ex, who was furious that I was on a dating app and even more enraged that I posted about it on the not quite public, but not quite private platform.

The whole debacle made me wonder if anyone should ever let their significant other follow their finstas. When I put out a call for thoughts on it, people were passionate about maintaining boundaries between the person they're dating and the content they post in private.
Caroline Long, a college student in Boston, said she rejected her boyfriend's follow request about a month into their relationship.
"If there's life news or drama I'm posting about, he's usually the first to hear about it anyway," she said. "And I've had my finsta for a while so there's some old, old posts about former boyfriends and issues that I'm sure wouldn't be fun for him to peruse."
my finsta b like -here’s a picture of my ass -let me expose my mental illness -now ima broadcast my depression episode -look @ my titties -this meme was funny

Online dating expert Julie Spira says couples with finstas don't necessarily need to share the accounts with each other for a healthy relationship. As long as you're not going out of your way to hide anything, Spira believes having a private space to vent is fine.
"When you're in a relationship, there are always things that you share with your close friends that you just might not share with your partner," she said during a phone call.
Finstas are appealing because they allow for vulnerability when there's an insurmountable pressure to be perfect on social media. Sydney Smalls calls her finsta a "little safe space," which is why she's hesitant to approve her boyfriend's follow request.
"It's where I'm the most honest version of myself online so I only trust a few people with what I write about," the New York-based production assistant explained. "Even though I trust my boyfriend it would just be an added level of pressure for some reason."
Many share her view; although they feel supported by their partners, the finsta users who shared their stories with me said that they would censor their posts if their partners followed them.
When I was convinced someone was ghosting me, for example, I turned to my finsta to talk through it. An army of close friends analyzed screenshots down to the timestamp and deliberated in the comments, concluding that although ghosting was a possibility, I should suck up my pride and double text. In the end, I had nothing to worry about — the support network I had through my finsta convinced me not to sabotage a new relationship, and all I had to do was literally communicate. But if I had let that person follow me, would I have asked for advice in the first place, or would I still be wallowing in my own anxiety?
Overheard in bar last night: Girl 1: I let him see my finsta so we're basically never gonna date Girl 2: oh ya that’s the kiss of death
— PAZ (@pazpaz) February 24, 2018
Finstas are like a semi-public diary for soliciting advice and rationalization and inviting someone you're actively dating into it might make you less inclined to seek out that advice. The private accounts are a valuable space to talk out issues beforehand so you can approach your partner with a reasonable level-headedness.
"Having a space for myself ensures that I'm being honest about what's upsetting me," Long said, elaborating on why she doesn't let her boyfriend follow her. "And how I'm getting from Point A to Point B. Not that I'm dishonest with my boyfriend, but I don't feel as obliged to cater or censor finsta posts for a certain audience."
For Danika Frank, a writer in Los Angeles, using a finsta to separate herself from the people she dates keeps her codependence in check.
"So it was good to have a space, a place where I could dissect my own thoughts away from them," she said. "Even if I was stressed about something relationship-wise, I could break it down on there before bringing it up to them."
Philadelphia college student Mal Sary, who went through a break up while she and her ex were still living together, said having a non-physical space to get away helped her through it until she could find somewhere else to live.
"Instead of yelling at my ex, I just used my finsta to channel a lot of my anger," Sary said.
In addition to having a defined place to put their thoughts in order, the people who don't let their significant other follow their finsta felt like they didn't have to because their relationships were already healthy enough. Although Smalls' boyfriend doesn't follow her private account, she doesn't turn to her finsta to complain about him when they have issues in their relationship.
"When I'd have problems with my ex, I'd just post about it and hide it from him and let it build," she said. "This time, I just talk directly to [my boyfriend]. It kinda feels disrespectful now. I don't want to talk about him behind his back [because] I know he wouldn't do that to me."
Jeung Bok Holmquist, an artist in Madison, Wisconsin, adds that their partner doesn't follow their finsta, but that doesn't give them a pass to complain about him.
"I guess I only wouldn't [allow a finsta follow] if I was actively talking about my partner on there, but I also shouldn't be talking shit about my partner in private," they said. "So then that's just a clear sign of a bad relationship!"
𝓷𝓮𝔀 rules of dating: 1st base: liking and unliking someone’s post 2nd base: “nah u don’t have to venmo me” 3rd: get called an asshole on their finsta homerun: a retweet
— vinay (@mumblecomic) January 10, 2019
That doesn't mean that not allowing a romantic interest to follow you ensures smooth sailing. Nothing you post on social media is truly private. Anything can be screenshot, passed through the screen grapevine, and end up hurting everyone involved. But do people have an obligation to break the trust of following a friend's finsta to protect another friend's feelings?
Evy Oliverio, who works at the United Nations in Beirut, was seeing someone who encouraged her to follow his finsta, until she DM'd him and realized she was blocked. Their mutual friends still followed him and could see that he wasn't interested in her anymore, but didn't tell her. She later found out that he had promptly started dating someone else "for real" after "months" of telling her he "wasn't ready."
"We had enough mutual friends who knew about him dragging me through metaphorical dirt," Oliverio said. "And yet none of them would be like 'Ev, this is happening.'"
Spiro, the relationship consultant, is cautious about breaking that trust. Even though it may be hurtful to mutual friends, if someone invites you to their finsta then you have a "digital moral obligation" not to share what they post.
"Either you're in something that's private or you're not," Spiro said. "I love the fact that this is small and intimate, but I think there needs to be spoken and unspoken rules of what you do and don't share."
Despite the moral obligations, Oliverio notes that finstas are still public, even if your account is set to private, and she'd rather step in than see a mutual friend be hurt.
"You allow who you want to see it but the fact that someone else besides you 'sees' your truth, it's no longer private," she noted, acknowledging that it doesn't justify sharing secrets. "I do think that if you and I have a mutual friend and on their finsta, they start dragging you, I'd tell you. And secondly, hold them accountable."
At the end of the day, finstas are yet another aspect of how the internet muddles dating. But that doesn't mean that finsta users shut their partners out of their secret accounts entirely. For Valentine's Day last year, Holmquist made their boyfriend a zine with drawings from their finsta posts when the couple first started seeing each other. As long as there's open and honest communication between a couple, finstas shouldn't be an issue, they said.
Spiro says it's "almost distrusting" when someone insists on following their partner's finsta.
"I think trust and communication is something couples engage in every day but that doesn't mean that they're on a third-party text or phone call every time they're communicating with somebody else," she said. "You need to have your personal life, and they have their personal life, and you need to have your communication together."
I, for one, value the tightly knit support network in my finsta over any potential partner's insecurities. If a partner asked me to give it up, I'd probably dump them and immediately post about it on my finsta.
Even if it makes dating more complicated, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Today we’re talking something I’m definitely passionate about and well-versed in: Instagram.
I know for a fact that I waste too much time on that app, so balance is definitely a goal for this year. But social media can also have really awesome impact!! I have met all of my best friends through this app…seriously. The first time I reached out to my best friend was some reply to her story saying that she looked super cute. I eventually worked up the courage to DM her and ask if she wanted to hang out some time…and here we are!
Tumblr media
I met my other very best friend and future bridesmaid on Instagram as well. If you haven’t already read my “Meeting My Internet Friend IRL!” blog post here, you definitely should! The Internet, and social media especially, has opened me up to a world of possibilites, places, ideas, people, you name it! So I’m eternally greatful for that. ♡
Tumblr media
As soon as I started my Instagram, I knew I wanted to be “aesthetic.” Yes, my account was private, and yes, my only followers at the time were my parents. My first post had a whopping 12 likes – including good ‘ol Mom & Dad, my aunts and uncles, a few close friends and even my friend’s mom. #therealones
I was always so focused on my “look,” growing up in the age of influencers, watching YouTubers do brand collabs and take trips to Bali. I knew I wanted my life to be like that. Which, granted, is a dream that I’m pretty sure every girl from 10 to 20 has wanted.
But seriously speaking, through Instagram I also began to develop my passion and figure out my career path. I’m no influencer yet – believe me, I know! But Instagram has become my creative playzone, a place to share about myself and my life and have a good time with it. Kinda like this blog!
I love spending time taking & editing photos and videos, figuring out color schemes and design along the way. One of the coolest things I think, is scrolling through somone’s Instagram and seeing how their theme and style has changed throughout the years! You can definitely see lots of different looks on mine…
LIGHTROOM
Tumblr media
I’ve used a lot of photo editing apps and tricks throughout the years, but I’m currently hooked on Lightroom Mobile. As the beginner noobie I was when I switched from VSCO I was like what…the heck. What am I supposed to do with all these buttons?! And no filters!?
Turns out Lightroom is super easy to use, and filters here are called “presets.” I have finally curated my own preset that I’m pretty dang happy about (it only took me forever), but there are literally a million availble to purchase and some even for free.
Since I’m a cheapskate I’m obvi going to talk all about the free stuff today! So, when I started using Lightroom, I started with this free preset from Tara Kellie Smith.
my feed with the free Tara Kellie preset
Not only did I love it, it was free, and downloading it and accessing it turned out to be a piece of cake. I’ll leave a link to her video about it here, she goes step-by-step through the process and the link for the preset is in the description!
When I wanted to switch it up a bit, I started looking around on YouTube for free presets or free editing tutorials. I found this AMAZING goldmine of a playlist that I definitely recommend you check out! It’s got tons of presets for almost any influencer you could want: Aspyn Ovard, Jaci Marie Smith, Jess Conte, Marla Catherine, Zoelaz, and Brandon Woelfel, just to name a few. 😉 I’m not kidding, this playlist literally has over 100 videos on it. It also has lots of general presets for different themes and color schemes as well!
The way to maintain a cohesive Instagram feed is to edit all your photos similarly. You can use the same preset on every photo, just keep in mine that it may need to be tweaked a little bit depending on what the light level is, colors, etc.
PICSART
Tumblr media
I love bringing my own creative elements into the picture (pun intended!) and playing around with different techniques. My favorite app to do this on by far is PicsArt.
It’s had its ups and downs for sure, but it’s a free app and has lots of amazing capabilities. In the past I used it when I went through my “doodle” stages and wanted to add drawings to my photos. Lately I have been using it for the “sticker” and “collage” options.
Having taken a couple of photography and design classes in high school, I got really used to Photoshop and Illustrator and loved them. Upon graduating, however, I was not willing to pay the hefty price tag just yet. PicsArt is the only app I’ve found so far that has so many Photoshop-like features yet is completely free!
So, when doodling on a photo I simply opt to go with the “draw” option. When making collages, I’ll pick the “freeform” option and select usually the max amount of photos allowed.
Processed with VSCO with c1 preset
some photos from a cruise that I then doodled on after
my *very* bright doodle feed
Then comes the really fun part. The “sticker” button essentially is a cut-and-paste selection type of tool. Take a photo of yourself for example, and you can completely cut out the background. PicsArt even has some pretty decent facial recognition, which comes in handy when doing portraits!
a couple of collages I have made, all on PicsArt. I simply gathered photos and tumblr posts/quotes from Pinterest and cropped and arranged as needed!
There are also thousands of stickers added by other people into the app that you can use for free, as well. You can search anything, from “tumblr” to “aesthetic” to whatever color scheme you’re going for. So get out there and spruce up your feed!
PHONTO
Tumblr media
If you love creating Instagram stories, iPhone lockscreen quotes, or just tasteful memes, I highly recommend Phonto. It’s a super basic app that lets you put text on your photos. Free and simple, it has everything you need. You can even download fonts off the Internet and add them to the app super easily. I have my own growing library of fonts of all kinds.
a collection of various wallpapers, lockscreens, and blog post photos I have made with Phonto
UNUM
Tumblr media
UNUM is a fantastic app if you really want to plan out how your feed is going to look or even schedule Instagram posts. I mostly just use it to see how a certain photo will match up with the rest of my feed before posting, but you can also set up your caption and hashtags and post directly through the app!
UNFOLD
Tumblr media
Unfold is the app you’ve probably seen influencers use but never knew what it was. With Unfold, you can create really gorgeous little setups of photos, videos, and text for your Instagram stories. I love to do it especially when I have story posts to make about my blog and blog posts.
————————————————————————————————————————–
And those are pretty much all my photo editing tips & tricks! Everything I talked about is 100% free to get started with. I don’t use all of these apps on a daily basis, but they’re super helpful from time to time. I hope you enjoyed these post and found it super helpful, till next time, cheers!
Kindly, Kenzie Marie

Hidden In an OOO: Re-defining a Modern Woman
Can the modern woman have it all? Put simply, no. But to elaborate on that immediate shut down, I say no because it is unrealistic to expect so much from a singular person. The idea of a “modern woman” defies the caveman expectations of a “super mom” and plays into the 2019 progressive ideals of a woman who can do exactly what she wants. It is through the use of various rhetorical appeals that Leandra Medine’s “MR’s Out-of-Office Reply Is Chock-Full of Feelings” is able to imply a shift towards a liberated modern woman.
Located within the depths of the fashion blog, Man Repeller, a search of “Leandra Medine” will provide you with the following description: “Leandra Medine is the founder of Man Repeller, which she likes to call a nudist colony, and author of Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls. She just started making her own chia pudding,” (About Leandra Medine 2012). But to further grasp the power of her ethos, one must look beyond the brief description provided by the sentence above. She attended The New School for Liberal Arts in New York, and then took a fact-checking job at New York Magazine (BoF Contributors 2018). Man Repeller was birthed in 2010 out of a semester abroad in Paris, previously under the pseudonym “Boogers + Bagles” (Wallace 2014). As reiterated in The Cut’s article, “its [Man Repeller’s] slangy language (‘this amazeballs Vena Cava safety pin blouse’), and its youthful, bloggy self-disclosure…” that make the site the perfect medium to discuss the underlying sources of self-reflection that are hidden in our everyday consumption of various forms of media (Wallace 2014).
Leandra Medine has a lot going for her: a newly updated Manhattan apartment with custom elephant wallpaper (Ross 2018), a blooming podcast, a Man Repeller Buffet brand complete with “unibrow sunglasses” and rooster earrings (Medine 2018b), and not to mention two beautifully expressive twin girls, all of this often documented via Instagram post. Yet, despite her bountiful achievements Leandra cannot be described as arrogant. She is not without her struggles, in her article “I Have a Complicated Relationship With Happiness” she discusses the struggle of losing relatability once achieving a state of happiness (Medine 2018a). She has also been open with discussing her struggles with infertility on Monocycle, her podcast. Her achievements are discrete, and by showing the good alongside the bad, our humble author is able to create an astounding ethos through which her message can be subjectively interpreted.
An understanding of Man Repeller’s tone is needed to fully discuss the flexibility of a modern woman as implied through the article at hand: “MR’s Out-of-Office Reply Is Chock-Full of Feelings.” Leandra’s quirky writing style is exemplified within the first thirty seconds of her Alexa Chung Interview in Man Repeller’s Chatroom, in which she discusses her contemplation of the word literally. One must first literally discuss the literal meaning of the word “literally,” which Leandra concludes literally connote be taken literally (Man Repeller 2016). Beyond the tangent implied above with the colloquialized interpretation of “literally,” the out of office (OOO) notice up for discussion today is anything but traditional. Yes, it has all the makings of a bounce-back, reply email, generated from a robot behind a screen, but the article has something a typical automated response lacks: heart.
Simply, the letter provides her audience with a personal update from the home front. Directly stated: there will be a lack of content over the holidays as people will be spending time with their families, but when viewed under a metaphorical “black light” the true message of a woman’s free will becomes visible. This declaration of work-place alleviation is paired (or maybe juxtaposed) with a call to action “Go out and do something you love, just for the sake of doing something you love! Go on! Right now!” (Medine 2018c) which rings with a hedonism acceptable only during the holidays. Leandra also uses this time to recap and reflect on the recent changes within Man Repeller HQ.
She opens the article by informing us on her whereabouts: Australia, which is strange for the holidays as traditionally people like to be close to home, but she insists she is still getting some much-needed R & R. By mentioning her own whereabouts Leandra challenges typical ideas of the holidays. She is on a tropical vacation in Australia, without her family, without her children, and without regret for doing so. The unapologetic nature of disregarding tradition shows an aloofness that proves a modern woman can do whatever the heck she wants, even if that thing is going to Australia for Christmas.
After a subtle anecdote about tomato paste, she reiterates Amelia Diamond’s leaving of Man Repeller. Now, for the first-time reader it may not mean much, but for us members of this girl cult, Amelia’s decision to leave came as a shock. Amelia Diamond has been with Man Repeller since the beginning. Her second-to-last post, “Why I’m Finally Letting Go of the Pressure to Be Something I’m Not,” hinted at a dissatisfaction, but never did I expect to read her informal, coded resignation notice to readers at home: “Amelia and Leandra on Working With Your Best Friend (and Saying Goodbye)” (Diamond & Medine 2018). Amelia’s departure was filled with emotion and by even briefly mentioning it, Leandra is able to pull pathos from other posts back into the OOO reply. By addressing the importance of memories, she indirectly touches on nostalgia. Similarly, in his piece “Instagram’s Instant Nostalgia,” Ian Crouch does an amazing job exploring new-wave perceptions of nostalgia (Crouch 2017). Humans have a desire to narrate their lives, and in the booming age of social media, self-documentation has never been easier. A curated sense of nostalgia can now be rendered in seconds with the help of apps such as Leap Second, Instagram, and Snapchat, all of which provide year-long recaps of your posted life. This empathetic sense of nostalgia can be seen through Leandra’s mention of reflecting on old photographs as a way to mark the passing of time. It is in contemplation that we find nostalgia and become more susceptible to empathetic approaches to rhetoric. By emphasizing words such as “memories” and “story” through repetition, an ongoing sense of passing time further adds to the nostalgic pathos appeals within the OOO announcement.
Digressing from Amelia’s departure, Leandra succumbs to the expected momentary self-reflection tied to the New Year. She discusses the notion that as one grows up, you begin to find answers to the great unknowns. You find who you are, what you want, and (almost) exactly how to get there. You become an active participant in your life, whether you realize it of not. Noting the insignificance of numbers on a page, Leandra struggles to accept the duality of human perceptions of time. We struggle to quantify it and therefore struggle to understand it. She uses a page break as an extended metaphor, aiding her attempted comprehension of necessary nostalgia. Moments of reflection, like those that surround the holidays, are not unlike pages breaks. They allow for moments of peace and time to gather our thoughts or, in her case, our miniskirts.
… other times I can’t believe that we don’t always see the significance of adding page breaks to the sequence of time. It’s an opportunity, more than anything, to sit with yourself and acknowledge the mental camera roll of a year passed. You can probably do this with your de facto camera roll but real pictures are distracting in that the memories you glue to them might get obscured by a cool skirt you wore, or how shiny your hair looked — any number of visible variables that tap at your shoulder as if to divert your attention from the grand scheme of the roll… (Medine 2018c).
It is logical for a page break to mark the place to take a breath and reflect. By having moments of reflection throughout the year we are better able to understand ourselves. Especially during points of high-stress, such as the holiday season, taking a meditative moment to re-focus on what really matters has the potential to allow for a more objective approach to life and a centered view of one’s personal desires.
To close the memo, Leandra leaves her audience with generalized advice. “It’s not as bad as you think it was. I guess the thing is that it never is.” (Medine 2018c). Maybe it’s my inner cynic but isn’t it a little cliché to end with generalized, feel-good statements? Similar to how zodiac readings are often less prescriptive and more imprecise than we think, the final paragraph, upon the first read, comes across as superficially airy. However, when further pondered, her words hold value. We must reflect on ourselves, the good and the bad; even within this post we must observe the OOO post’s true significance. Although a thesis is not directly stated, the implied notion of a change in what it means to be a woman in modern society, can be gathered in between the comedic interjections and sappy farewells. The modern woman is many things, but most importantly she is as she wishes to be.
Man Repeller’s brilliant combination of elevated diction and comedic jargon allows for a balance between work and play. This verbal co-op can be further modeled to a modern woman’s balancing act. No longer forced into scratchy pantsuits, and sexist The Office-esque meetings, Leandra exemplifies a sense of balance. She is able to work remotely, spend time with her husband, and still have a life and family back in New York. This duality of highly educated language paired alongside her casual voice shows that the modern woman is multi-faceted. Her articles read as an email from an old friend, and this OOO article is no exception. Whereas traditional scholarly writing is very standoffish, Man Repeller runs a fine-tuned balance, ideal for today’s world. Some critics of Man Repeller may say it is too informal, pulling from fragments such as “begging you to stop, look and unclench your butt cheeks,” (Medine 2018c). However, by choosing to focus on the more childish moments of the piece, one forgets the underlying sophistication of challenging the modern perception of women. No longer seen as chess pieces for society, but rather as their own entities.
Leandra Medine’s “MR’s Out-of-Office Reply Is Chock-Full of Feelings” serves as the perfect monocle through which we can examine the changing ideals of women’s societal expectations. No longer must we follow pre-historic, gendered rules by which women ought to live their lives; instead a movement towards creating our own lives has begun to take root, if only in the niche community of forward-thinking fashion enthusiasts. This hidden essence of the ideal modern-woman might be so elusive because it is different for everyone. Not all women want to live in Manhattan, just as not all women want to spend Christmas in Australia. The modern woman is recognizable by her options and the freedom to choose her own path. And in our own moment of reflection, is that really such a radical idea?

I have tested a lot of software tools over the years and I must say that I’ve never seen anything bring traffic in as fast, or as easily as ‘Traffic Builder 2.0’. I saw a demo video and had to get my hands on the software to see for myself. Surely it couldn’t be that fast and effective?! My very first test campaign brought in 267 unique, targeted visitors within just 39 minutes. By the following morning that number was up to 375.
Truly amazing, and my brain is whirling with ideas on how to turn this easy traffic into profit. It gets a MASSIVE thumbs ups from me.

Traffic – The One Thing EVERY Marketer Needs More Of. Doesn’t Matter WhatYou’re  Selling, How Good The Sales Page Or Product Is … It ALL Comes Down To Traffic…
Historically There Are 2 Types:
FREE TRAFFIC
AKA The Biggest Lie Ever Told. Some Ways To Get It:
Post in blogs and forums for hours every day.
Write articles, create videos and build out multiple social media profiles.
Optimize your sites for SEO and hope to compete against the big guns for the scraps that remain.
Invest hours of time HOPING all your efforts pay off.
Free Traffic Is A Lie Because All You’re Doing Is Trading Time For Results, And It’s Usually A Losing Deal.
PAID  TRAFFIC
Making The Rich Even Richer. It Can Be Fast, But You’ve Got To:
Pay for social media ads, boosted posts, banner ads and more.
Compete with MILLIONS of other marketers for the same audiences.
Put up with regular price increases AND risk your account being banned if you accidentally violate just one term of service.
Facebook Made $17.08 BILLION In Ad Revenues In 2015.  Another $27.6 Billion Last Year …  And Is Expected To Make $33.76 Billion In 2017 From Paid Ads.
Zuckerberg Is Rich Enough:
Time To Pay Yourself Instead…
Hey Ben Carroll along with Gee Sanghera. In our combined 12+ years of digital marketing, we’ve experimented with pretty much every type of traffic out there.
Ben got started with CPA and FB apps and learned early on how important traffic is to an online business. He loves developing softwares to automate marketing and has created many winning tools that make marketers’ lives easier.
Gee is behind software products including InstaEngage, Curation Studio and Social Stores. Each of these award-winning softwares is about driving traffic, and thousands of happy buyers still use them today.
The ULTIMATE In Converting Traffic:
Fast & 100% Free
Faced with increasing ad costs and audiences that ignored our posts, we set out to do the impossible: create a tool that would WORK like paid traffic, but require zero ad budget.
Nothing like this had been done before, so it wasn’t easy. It took all of Ben’s development skills and MONTHS of research into different networks.
But Enough About That – Let’s Get To What Matters – Real Results:
Seeing Is Believing:
AUTOMATED Sales From Completely Free Traffic!
Any Niche, Any Product, Any Offer
This Plain Works!
While we loved our results from the software, we wanted to make sure it would work for anyone.  So we shared it with a group of beta testers, and they couldn’t believe what they saw:

But Enough About That – Let’s Get To What Matters – Real Results:
Seeing Is Believing:
AUTOMATED Sales From Completely Free Traffic!
Any Niche, Any Product, Any Offer
This Plain Works!
While we loved our results from the software, we wanted to make sure it would work for anyone.  So we shared it with a group of beta testers, and they couldn’t believe what they saw:
