Hello! Please have an old drawing I did of these two little Medieval Rats (+birb). I'm in the process of redrawing them and completely forgot to post this lmao, next time you see them my style will have changed a bit (and I'm gonna improve their designs ofc).
Florian is a retired spy, Gylfi is his adopted feral child who's dream is to become a knight but alas due to her lineage and Florian's time as a spy, it will never come to fruition.
Flick is their pet falcon, he got the name because he's so fast that you can only see a flicker of colour when he flies.

2 & 14?
2) What is your favorite fic of yours?
Oh my god how could I choose only one of my babies????
I'm always very fond of So Many Are the Crossings and the Roads (BenJan Medieval AU), because at the time it was the longest thing I'd ever written (it's only 9k, but at the time that was very impressive to me), and I wrote it in a crazed rush over a single weekend after getting hit with a burst of inspiration, which is not at all how I usually write.
I'm also kind of fond of What Power (Saiyuki reincarnation cyberpunk) which has never really gotten that much feedback, probably because there's way too little of the story on the page and way too much of it left in my head. But I think it's a fun idea and fun characters, even if it probably should have been an original novel rather than a short fanfic.
I think Marks (Swordspoint, Alec fails to teach Richard how to read) is one of the best things I've ever written, craft-wise, though uh I haven't reread it in a long time so my opinion might change if I did.
14) What is something you wrote in a fic that you are hoping readers picked up on but you don’t know if they did? And/or, what is something that you were excited that readers did pick up on?
In chapter 7 of lay me down in the bed that I made (which I SWEAR TO GOD I haven't abandoned!!!), I spent so much time debating what story to have Stede tell Ed. I was looking up all sorts of myths, googling stuff to see what was around in the early 1700s; I wanted something that had resonances with the fic's plot without being too on-the-nose. I went with Mr Fox (aka The Robber Bridegroom), which is of course about a girl who (almost) marries a man she knows nothing about, only to discover that he has a deadly past. And also he's probably planning to murder her and eat her, but that part's less relevant to 'lay me down'. The other one I came close to using was Cupid and Psyche (marrying someone you don't know, going through trials to prove your love).
Anyway, I spent a ton of time thinking about this and then not one single person mentioned it, hahaha.
I also haven't learned my lesson, because I have a scene planned for a few chapters from now where Ed and Stede discuss a Shakespeare play, and I've been wasting too much time looking up quotes and deciding between Othello (Desdemona falls in love with Othello when he shares his stories of victory in battle; their love is sabotaged by Othello's right hand man; Ed has strong feelings about turning a husband murdering his wife into a performance), Antony & Cleopatra (choosing between love and duty; a man destined for greatness who just wants a happy private life instead; also a lot of performances have a scene with Antony and Cleopatra switch clothes) or maybe The Tempest (the closest thing Shakespeare has to actually writing about the Caribbean; about colonialism; also it's not even that relevant but I'm obsessed with putting the line "You taught me language, and my profit on't / Is, I know how to curse" into everything). I'm sure no one else will care about this discussion between them except for me, but I'm very excited to get to it.
Thank you for the asks! :D

Author Spotlight: Justgleekout Day 1
Tumblr media
Author Spotlight: @justgleekout
How did you get into Glee and Glee fandom?
I remember seeing commercials for it on tv when season 1 was about to come out in the Netherlands. It really looked like something I would love as I already loved musicals like HSM and Hairspray and all that stuff. Though the first episode I actually remember watching was Mattress. (Will finding out his wife was fake pregnant was a very intense and memorable scene for a 12yo!) I absolutely LOVED the show and watched it religiously. When I found out the US was about a season ahead I started watching online. When I was caught up, I started setting my alarm an hour early the day after the episode aired in the US so I could watch it before school started. It was a ride. A friend introduced me to tumblr and I made my glee/klaine blog in February 2012 and I am still here.
In general, what drew you into writing (and/or creating)?
I am more of an artist rather than an author. I've been drawing and making fanart for as long as I can remember. Even before I really knew fanart was a thing I was already making it. because I love my favourite characters and I love drawing them <3 Writing fic took a little longer because english is not my first language and I'm dyslexic. I always loved stories and I always just wanted more!! I started reading fic in 2011 and it looked like something I would be into. I still have a little notebook from when I was 13/14 ish which has a very long story about Sebastian kissing Blaine at a warblers party and Kurt freaking out about it in the worst possible English imaginable..... that story will never see the light of day oml..
I hadn't actually published a story until this year. Glad to be here now though!! Never too late <333
What was it about Glee that made you decide to write fanfic for it?
Kurt and Blaine. God their love is just so beautiful and inspiring. I could fantasize about them for days. It was about time to get the daydreams on paper! (or laptop screen in my case)
Have you been a part of other fandoms before? Have you written fanfiction pre-glee?
I have been in a lot of other fandoms, but none of which I felt as strongly about as glee. When I was younger I was obsessed with the original dutch version of "House of Anubis". I'm still high-key invested in the Avatar: the Last Airbender fandom. also also Shadowhunters and Harry Potter hold big places in my heart. I have however never written about these fandoms because, when it comes to it, nothing brings me as much joy as glee/klaine!
Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
Oh so, so many!! But the two ideas that I've been playing with a lot recently (in my head I might add) are a Hogwarts AU and a mid-evil soulmate AU!
Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?
There are some wild kinks I tend to stay far away from. But the two things I really cannot ever deal with are rape/noncon and abuse.
How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?
How many???? oof I have 28 saved in my notes app. Most are just one shots/ideas, but still. I really want to make a one-shot series of all the klaine kisses that should have been but never were.
But I'll give you a tease for the medieval soulmate AU I'm working on:
People are born with the name of their soulmate on their backs. But everyone who has the name of someone from the same gender has to get their mark magically removed/burned off when they are born. Kurt and Blaine are princes from different kingdoms, who never knew the true names of their soulmates because all there was to see on their backs was a small burn scar. When they meet however, they inevitably fall in love and seek a way to find out what their mark originally says.
***
Check out Justgleekout’s Fics
Grease Monkey -  Blaine goes to visit Kurt at 'Hummel Tires And Lube' but he is not prepared for the sight that awaits him.
Welcome Home -  After not having seen each other in months, Kurt goes to pick up Blaine from the airport.

nah the post was good, sorry i made it too board for you to undersatnd that, i was just curious of the whole show because i found mixed views of it on tumblr... and while i only watch a few clips AFTER it finished(the OVA didnt come out yet) i was curious about it and its problems. im one of those people who can go into somethign with spoilers anyway
while looking for KLK fics to read later, i find they arent many AUs of the show, especily since the show doesnt have as many fans as it used to. some of them are either incompleted or just one chapter and i dont know any dounjinshis. ya know any AU doujinshis and/or fanfics, if not you know any neat AU ideas/headcanons of the show i can write/draw about(i dont do crossovers sry)
reading your posts you have mention your fairytale AU you wanted to write about, you still doing that or you stop long ago? if you have more plotpoitns abotu it care to share(i'm curious abou your backstory for ragyo)
I'd describe my feelings on the show as "mixed," too. This post probably sums up my thoughts best.
Regarding AUs for the show, I think it's worth noting that regardless of Kill la Kill's popularity, its English-language fic scene has always seemed relatively quiet—at least, from my perspective, anyway. (I remember a popular fic writer once published a Kill la Kill piece, and it did very well for a Kill la Kill piece, but the author found the low engagement to be incredibly discouraging.)
The doujinshi scene seems to be much more happening, but unfortunately, I'm not very well versed in that area and don't think I can personally recommend any AUs, sorry!
But for English-language AUs, there have been some lovely ones over the years. I compiled a rec list here that includes a few. It's true that a lot of fics are incomplete, but incomplete works still deserve love and attention. After all, many works become incomplete because of a lack of interest.
As for my own fairytale AU... I'm sorry to say that it may never happen. I tried to continue it as my National Novel Writing Month project last year, but I only got a few thousand words in before switching gears to an "original" piece instead.
Thank you very much for the interest, though! Ragyo's backstory has changed a bit over the drafts, but I think the basis has always been one of the Indian tales from the Konjaku Monogatari, called "About King Prasenajit's Daughter Ugly Adamantina" in Marian Ury's Tales of Times Now Past: Sixty-Two Stories from a Medieval Japanese Collection. The story describes a princess born so ugly that she's hidden away from the world in a small hut. It turns out that her ugliness is because of a sin in her past life, but once she repents, she becomes spectacularly beautiful. Ragyo's story is similar, except her ugliness comes from a wicked woman's heart, and she becomes beautiful in a different way, a way that maybe has something to do with the Uchide-no-Kozuchi, or wish-granting mallet, quality of the demons in the AU....

My 2020 Sherlolly Self Interview
Tumblr media
Thanks for organizing this fun activity @sherlollyappreciationweek! 🎉 I’ll start out with a very brief “about me” section-
I live in the northeast area of the USA, I’ve been married for seventeen years, have one teenage son, and I’m in my *gulp* late thirties now. I do volunteer ministry work and also work part time from home. Among other leisure activities, obviously I love writing! I started writing original fiction when I was a preteen, but I’ve been writing fanfic under the pen name “writingwife83” for over six years now. I discovered fanfic and the world of online fandom after becoming obsessed with BBC Sherlock in 2014 after s3 aired. I read The Full House, fell in love with the whole concept of fanfic, specifically for sherlolly, and couldn’t help but give it a go myself. And as they say, the rest is history!
Below the cut I’ll talk about some of the topics and fics suggested by followers/readers. Buckle up cuz it’s a lot lol...
Ok, first up to be kind enough to give me some feedback is @readstoomuch. You said- “what inspires you. Any story (I love them all!). Who do you love writing? Who is hardest for you? And which is that one story that you had fun doing?”
As for what inspires me, first and foremost it’s the show and characters itself. Watching those two on screen, it’s not hard to be inspired! But beyond that, I find a lot of inspiration in music and art, and just generally in other creative works and people. I think for a while I had my own internal inspiration and no lack of it, but as months dragged into years lol, I have found that the rest of the shippers are invaluable in filling the gaps when I lack inspiration and motivation. Some prompts I’ve gotten from others have taken on a life I never would have expected, and that’s pretty great. I honestly don’t think writing works best as a purely solitary activity. I know myself and although there is an aspect of my writing that will always be “for me,” that’s absolutely not all it is. It’s the fun of creating with others and it’s the fun of sharing with others.
As for who I love writing and who’s hardest, I think I’ve always felt pretty comfortable writing the main characters in Sherlock. I probably especially love writing Sherlock himself because he’s fun to break down and really dig deep into his emotions and thought processes. There have definitely been times some of the side characters have overwhelmed me and made me nervous about conveying their voices accurately. For instance, Mycroft can be tough if it involves pulling him out of his shell in a way that still feels believable and true to character.
That one story I had fun doing? Well there’s no way I can say just one. 😆 As far as reader response, there’s no other fic that can compare to the fun of I Told You So, that’s for sure. But as far as the actual plotting and creating, I think the fics I’ve had the most fun with are the multi-chapters I’ve done since becoming good friends with @thisisartbylexie. Having her as a sounding board, plotting buddy, and editor has absolutely increased my creating fun and has definitely also made me a better writer.
Thanks so much for asking @readstoomuch 🥰
Alrighty, @thisisartbylexie, you asked- if there's a fic that you ever wanted to go back to change in some way, which one would it be and why? Which one do you feel "oh wow, did I write that?" in a super positive way?
Idk how to choose just one fic. There are plenty that could use some changing lol! One I’d like to fix though, would be Pleased to Meet You. I know (because I’ve been told) that there’s inaccuracies in that one seeing as I’m not personally familiar with university settings in the UK. I did actually attempt research and I thought I got the idea, but apparently it didn’t work out terribly well. But the plotting and progression of that fic is one I’ve always been happy with, so I guess I feel like it’s a shame if it came off messy in some general ways and distracted from the rest of it. I like how I was able to weave that one into the canon of the show up to that point. And tbh it actually still fits as a uni backstory for them without any conflicts to the canon. As much as I enjoy canon divergence and AU, I also have a big soft spot for fics that simply connect seamlessly to what we’ve already been given.
As for “oh wow, did I write that?” I think one of my proudest accomplishments has been Zephyr. That fic kinda has it all lol. The tropes, the pining, the romance, the Victorian setting...ugh I love it. And there’s a climactic kiss moment in that fic that’s one of my faves I’ve written. I’m so glad I wrote it because of the Sherlolly Remix Challenge in ‘16, and at your suggestion, Lexie. But I will also be forever sad that I had to release that fic all at once on AO3 once completed. That fic would have been great fun to be writing and posting as I went along! And on top of being happy with the fic itself and how it came out, I’m awfully proud of the fact that you were excited enough about the fic to illustrate it, and that @goodshipsherlolly enjoyed it enough to record it as an audio fic. Honestly, what more could a writer ask for? 🥺
@mizjoely, you said you’d like to hear anything about The Queen’s Man. Okey doke, you got it lol!
I actually went back and read through most of that fic when I got this because it had been a long time since I’d looked at it. I gotta be honest that in hindsight...I’m a little surprised it did as well as it did.😂🙈 As some may remember, it started because I saw a magnificent manip and wanted to write something to go with it, and then because that was well received, somehow it just kept going. I did very little world building and development of characters in that fic. It was largely just one shippy, romantic, pining scene after another lol. At the end I did kinda tie it all in and wrapped the story up ok, but it was definitely one of those self indulgent fics where I didn’t feel like doing the hard parts and really just wanted to write the fun stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I loved writing it, and I’m so glad it got the positive reception that it did! But it just kinda makes me laugh because it goes to show sometimes you don’t know what’s going to do really well. You could agonize over clever plotting and world building and character development etc, and be so super proud of the finished product and all your hard work, but then you share and the response is like “meh.” And then other times you legit just throw something together with barely any careful thought, and the crowd goes wild! But aside from all that, the visuals in my head of that AU are just too drool worthy to me. Molly in Medieval royal attire? Sherlock in dark armor with a Purple Tunic of Sex™️ underneath? The two of them lingering in the dimly lit hallways and rooms of a castle and gazing endlessly in mutual pining? Yes to all.
Thanks for asking @mizjoely 😘
Ok wow, see what I mean? That was long! 🤣 If you read all the way through this whole thing, *Moriarty voice* thank you...bless you. Honestly, this ship is amazing and I don’t think I’ll ever have a writing experience anywhere else like I’ve had here. I’ve seen the other side of things in another fandom now, so I can all the more so confirm that there’s no ship quite like sherlolly. The warmth, reception, and longevity is mind blowing and I’m just awfully happy to have played a part in creating for the beauty that is Sherlock Holmes and Molly Hooper. 💕

THE MEGA RP PLOTTING SHEET / MEME.
First and foremost, recall that no one is perfect, we all had witnessed some plotting once which did not went too well, be it because of us or our partner. So here have this, which may help for future plotting. It’s a lot! Yes, but perhaps give your partners some insight? Anyway BOLD what fully applies, italicize if only somewhat.

PREFERRED THREAD TYPE: CRACK / casual nothing too deep / SERIOUS / DEEP AS HECK. (i love it all sorry I am quite the mixed bag lmao)
IS REALISM / RESEARCH IMPORTANT FOR YOU IN CERTAIN THEMES?:   YES / NO. i gotta know what certain human body parts taste like u know
ARE YOU ATM OPEN FOR NEW PLOTS?:  YES / NO / DEPENDS.
DO YOU HANDLE YOUR DRAFT / ASK - COUNT WELL?:  YES / NO / SOMEWHAT. it’s SO BAD FOR ME RN ASGLDKJDJKA i’m very inconsistent i’m so sorry.
HOW LONG DO YOU USUALLY TAKE TO REPLY?: 24H / 1 WEEK / 2 WEEKS / 3+ / months / years. / a lot of it has more to do w my general writing mood and if the thread im writing catches my interest, and rn im writing a TON of really wonderful and fascinating threads so they’re all super captivating for me and i try to reply asap
I’M OKAY WITH INTERACTING: ORIGINAL CHARACTERS / a relative of my character (an oc) / duplicates / MY FANDOM / CROSSOVERS / MULTI-MUSES / self-inserts / people with no AU verse for my fandom / CANON-DIVERGENT PORTRAYALS / AU-VERSIONS.
DO YOU POST MORE IC OR OOC?: IC / OOC. (i have a lot of stupid shit sorry)
ARE YOU SELECTIVE WITH FOLLOWING OTHERS?: YES / NO / DEPENDS.
BEST WAYS TO APPROACH YOU FOR RP/PLOTTING: just send me a tumblr instant message, i know it sucks shit but im not comfy releasing my discord w everyone just yet cause i use it for personal use as well. i check tumblr on the daily so if you send me a message chances are i’ll see it and respond!
WHAT EXPECTATIONS DO YOU HOLD TOWARDS YOUR PLOTTING PARTNER:  i guess just be able to put up with my rambling and stopping and starting, a lot of characterisation choices i do go through various stages and its pretty messy so when i communicate that with others it usually ends up equally messy. just be patient with me please.
WHEN YOU NOTICE THE PLOTTING IS RATHER ONE-SIDED, WHAT DO YOU DO?:  i don’t mind! sometimes ppl have more ideas that they want to share first and i’m always super happy to listen to those ideas !! sometimes its nice to have someone with a clear guide or structure and be able to work around that rather than trying to fumble through a plot together.
HOW DO YOU USUALLY PLOT WITH OTHERS, DO YOU GIVE INPUT OR LEAVE MOST WORK TOWARDS YOUR PARTNER?:  i try to map out some basic info abt their characters that i otherwise don’t know from their bio or verses and try to pick out points of confrontation or similarities to expand on with giselle that can be used as points for like a starter to happen. its either that or sometimes i have really stupid ideas i just toss out there like ‘LMAO THEYRE BREAKING SHIT AT DISNEYLAND’ and go buck wild from there if the other person is down. i also always try to warn people or get a gauge for what subjects to avoid and steer clear of considering that giselle is a bit of a Freak(tm) and will say and do bad things.
WHEN A PARTNER DROPS THE THREAD, DO YOU WISH TO KNOW?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: if there’s something giselle did or said that upset you, i would love to know not to repeat it again (since i do still feel pretty new to the rp game, theres still plenty of time for me to make stupid mistakes). if its just a general lack of interest or uncertainty of where the plot should go, then you dont have to tell me i wont take it personally i promise !
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY LEAD YOU TO DROP A THREAD?: sometimes i can be made uncomfortable by certain things mentioned... it happens but its rare
- WILL YOU TELL YOUR PARTNER?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. i don’t want to upset anyone personally and sometimes explaining the ins and outs of my discomfort make things ten times worse so i just. would rather not.
IS COMMUNICATION IN THE RPC IMPORTANT TO YOU? YES / NO.
- AND WHY?: i am the most nervous person you can meet and my brain is always giving me misinfo abt paranoia and random shit so i having clear concrete communication between two parties abt if something is going wrong or is being received poorly means the world to me.
ARE YOU OKAY WITH ABSOLUTE HONESTY, EVEN IF IT MAY MEANS HEARING SOMETHING NEGA1TIVE ABOUT YOU AND/OR PORTRAYAL?: i need it !! i still feel relatively new to all this and i need to know whats going wrong to improve !!
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE SUCH SITUATION IN A MATURE WAY? YES / NO.
WHY DO YOU RP AGAIN, IS THERE A GOAL?: to help with my confidence in writing! i have v bad anxiety when it comes to sharing my works and i write a lot of other pieces alongside this blog on ao3 and i want to develop my writing skills just in general. when it comes to like the nuts and bolts of why i rp giselle specifically, its mainly to just have fun and have a laugh w my friends who are really awesome quincy writers
WISHLIST, BE IT PLOTS OR SCENARIOS:  OH SO MANY! ive managed to fulfil a lot of my wishlist threads with like, giselle talking to characters she’s already zombified and i love all that angst but i want to do more stupid shit. i want to make it my personal goal to bully every quincy man and woman on sight. although a REAL dream would be if i got to write a thread zombifying a character who managed to escape giselle’s clutches. and more fighting! i want to get better at describing action and fights and i love to write giselle getting beat up and beating people up! more more more!!
THEMES I WON’T EVER RP / EXPLORE:   hohoho theres a LOT... uh r*pe/dubcon threads for one, even if yeah i know writing it doesnt condone it, it makes me intensely uncomfortable to put my muse in that scenario, i feel like i have an obligation to like, protect her from that shit you know? racism is one i don’t want to transgress, even though i’m a poc, its not really cathartic or groundbreaking to write abt racism in threads its just... really fucking upsetting. also i know the quincy’s have this very close parallel to the whole n*zi imagery and ideology thing going on and i am not about to start even daring to thread that into my writing or bring those allusions and references of real life tragedies into giselle’s threads. i’ve already talked at length abt exploring giselles trans identity in rp and why im not comfortable doing so, so.... yeah! all those i guess.
WHAT TYPE OF STARTERS DO YOU PREFER / DISLIKE, CAN’T WORK WITH?: i like starters where giselle can just immediately get right into being a piece of shit. mise en scene and all that! cut out the build up and just get to the intense horror !! i don’t like starters where its not immediately clear where the characters are standing and what they’re doing and what’s happening around them. those really disorientate me and leave me kinda floundering because i always need some allusion or mention of a setting to ground giselle in a time and place other wise i cant tell what her response should be
WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE MOST?:  EVIL WOMEN EVIL WOMEN EVIL WOMEN. also just characters i can wholeheartedly clown on, or also characters who have hidden depths to them and have a single panel of screentime. honestly it’s just all over the place!
WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE LEAST?:  angry old men GSADJDKSJA i could never rp yhwach for example or yamamoto because idk. theyre just so crummy and boring to me. i also couldnt rp characters who always have an upper hand in battle like aizen. i like my dumbasses and i like them stupid and adaptive not just, ‘yes i know this because i Know this.’
WHAT ARE YOUR STRONG ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: i think im nice...? FKSJDKDJSA idk i hate trying to toot my own horn. sometimes i also think i make funny jokes and im pretty chill and laid back
WHAT ARE YOUR WEAK ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: my writing style is inconsistent and adapts to whatever i’m reading so sometimes it’ll be really good and i love it and other times it reads like really bad fanfic and i get carried away far too easily and write novella lengths for threads which should be much shorter. i also get shy a lot and dont think i communicate very effectively but HEYO we’re working on it!
DO YOU RP SMUT?:  YES / NO/ DEPENDS. haven’t had anybody brave enough to try yet lol
DO YOU PREFER TO GO INTO DETAIL?: YES / NO / DEPENDS.
ARE YOU OKAY WITH BLACK CURTAIN?: YES / NO.
- WHEN DO YOU RP SMUT? MORE OUT OF FUN OR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?: more for fun i’d imagine because that’s just giselles own attitude to sex and relationships where she doesnt want anything deep. it might show character development in one way of just showing how she regards others in a romantic sense to be used rather than actually appreciated as their own person and show how selfish she is but yeah, more out of fun
- ANYTHING YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO RP THERE?:  theres a few kinks and such but i dont think they’d ever really come up. again, just mainly no r*pe/dubcon.
ARE SHIPS IMPORTANT TO YOU?:   YES / NO lets hope this doesn’t make me sound like an asshole, but its more like a fun little side thing than anything important to giselle’s actual development and characterisation.
WOULD YOU SAY YOUR BLOG IS SHIP-FOCUSED?: YES / NO. again, hardly anyone is brave enough to try to romance this evil cannibal.
DO YOU USE READ MORE?:  YES / NO / SOMETIMES WHEN I WRITE LONG STUFF.
ARE YOU:  MULTI-SHIP / Single-Ship / Dual-Ship  —  MULTIVERSE / Singleverse.
- WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO EXPLORE THE MOST IN YOUR SHIPS?: more how giselle likes to give over her power or dominate in different circumstances depending on who she’s with and what’s being done. BUT AGAIN, not a whole lot to explore yet.
ARE YOU OKAY WITH PRE-ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS?: YES / NO. - i mean im down for p much anything if it vibes w giselle.
► SECTION ABOUT YOUR MUSE.
- WHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE YOUR MUSE INTERESTING TOWARDS OTHERS, WHY SHOULD THEY RP WITH THIS PARTICULAR CHARACTER OF YOURS NOW, WHAT POSSIBLE PLOTS DO THEY OFFER?: if you want an evil woman to taunt and mock and hurt your muse, she’s your gal. you want her to zombify and ruin your muse, shes also your gal. you want her to insult and maim and injure, she’s also YOUR GAL. basically, if you want to do anything fucked up or sad or scary, she can help with that.
- WITH WHAT TYPE OF MUSES DO YOU USUALLY STRUGGLE TO RP WITH?:  uh muses who get really angry quickly or don’t rise or respond to her jabs and are just kinda like a flatline. theres only so much pestering and annoying she can do until realises its not working and just wanders off
- WHAT DO THEY DESIRE, IS THEIR GOAL?:  to find a goal worth living for.
- WHAT CATCHES THEIR INTEREST FIRST WHEN MEETING SOMEONE NEW?:  appearance she always takes an interest in girls almost right away. age as well because she judges old people.
- WHAT DO THEY VALUE IN A PERSON?:  a good set of guts to ruin and strong muscles.
- WHAT THEMES DO THEY LIKE TALKING ABOUT?:  women, gore, murder, herself, music, stupid memes, gossip.
- WHICH THEMES BORE THEM?:  politics, history, quincy ideology, soul reaper ideology, hollow physiology.
- DID THEY EVER WENT THROUGH SOMETHING TRAUMATIC?:  her family tried to force the burden of upholding the quincy lineage onto her shoulders, she was thrown into the wrong prison and held in isolation, then pressured to become an undying monster in service of a god and then was nearly killed by that same man and left wandering without guidance or purpose. so, yeah?
- WHAT COULD LEAD TO AN INSTANT KILL?:  transphobia. even a whiff of it in her direction and she’ll gut you like a fish.
- IS THERE SOMEONE /-THING THEY HATE?:  the twink soul reaper who outted her.
IS YOUR MUSE EASY TO APPROACH?: YES / NO. - Best ways to approach them?:  if you’re smart, you’ll bring a big bone for her to chew on and distract her while you ask whatever you want.
SOMETHING YOU MAY STILL WANT TO POINT OUT ABOUT YOUR MUSE?: i love my evil queen!
CONGRATS!!! You managed it, now tag your mutuals! ♥

World Building Through Character Creation and Background NPCs
Entry 03. I was thinking over how to build out more plot points for both the underlying bones of original fiction, and also fleshing out ideas for some of the arcs in my ACABH fic. Honestly, adding more characters within reasonable limits seems to really help with that. Even if they’re just characters with a name and a few lines of description, or even just one line of description, it makes for a great springboard point to start tacking on more details. From those details, it’s a lot easier to build out the world around them in various layers. Like for the original fiction world I’m building out right now, creating the character Corwin Blackwood with the helpful input from my friends on how the name sounded, resulted in spinning up a huge chunk of the underlying world order. Originally I was going with just a two-sided state of tension and conflict, but Corwin’s family brings with it a third side that’s caught in the middle—people minding their own business that aren’t actively affiliated with either side. In terms of mechanics, the Blackwoods’ existence brought in some specific broad categories of magical beings, a rudimentary idea of various magical systems with an as of yet undefined overarching universal magic system, and social conflict regarding differing points of view relating to said beings and affiliations with them.
His name is all about his role in the story, with the meaning of his first name being “heart’s friend,” and having had a close if tempestuous friendship with the main character. The last name of Blackwood automatically brings to mind a haunted forest, and as inspired by a Netflix Castlevania fic called Baba by Crownofpins on Ao3 as recommended to me by a friend, and the Blackwoods’ home-locale and name makes me think of the Belmonts. So it was easy enough to consider the Blackwoods tentatively as a family of exorcists/monster-hunters/etc in this rough draft. (The Baba fic is pretty awesome btw, it’s got great elements of old Slavic folklore, obviously Baba Yaga for example, among other things. I shan’t spoil it ofc, but I thought it was a lovely read. Adult content warning for the fic ofc, read the tags, etc.) There’s other external factors that helped bring him about, including other recent media consumption on my part also again in thanks to my friends for recommending them, including Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Legend of The White Snake. (Content warning: Both of those works contain adult content, etc.) They’re both stories of Chinese origin that focus on romances that contain supernatural elements, with The Legend of The White Snake being an old classic tale of folklore. But what’s really fascinating to me is the mythology system that’s at play in the stories—I’m so used to “medieval” fantasy settings being European-influenced landscapes and civilizations, it was really cool to see a more involved Asiatic-inspired one. I’ve certainly seen Asian-mythos-based supernatural movies and series before, but not in this specific niche that’s more fantasy-adventure-ish. Usually the ones I’ve come across are much more heavily leaning into the martial arts category of movies as I’d classify them, or set in more modern-based times. That’s probably just a sign I need to go out and find more content of this sort to consume, honestly. But how the above two works treat the whole spirituality/magic/supernatural aspect is admittedly a huge inspiration point for me for how I’m hoping this original fic’s world will be built, and provides a great starting point to go and try to research more into stories and myths relating to those elements. It also happens to fit in neatly with me being interested in trying to learn a bit more about some of my heritage and culture, being partly of Chinese descent. That’s another thing I know I want Corwin to explore as an additional main character: what does it mean when you’re a part of multiple cultures as a person? What’s that experience like? How does that fact shape how he interacts with his world? I know it has a huge impact on how he’s perceived socially and allows him greater access to magical training via one side of his family having the history for it, and it interests me to think of exploring that in writing. What I’m not certain of is what name to label this general cluster of magical beings as—are they demons? Yaoguai? Spirits? There are associations with each word and name, and giving them a newly made up name would mean severing those ties for better or worse. There are definitely classical monstrous elements in that group, but also a lot of diversity, holding up yet another mirror to the run of the mill humans of that world. What is this group of magical beings specifically in this world’s build? Are they humans that have cultivated themselves spiritually enough to transcend, or is it a reincarnation gig, or something else? I’ll probably have to make another OC or import ideas from mythology to explain where they’re from. With regards to the FC 5 fic though, I’m currently listening to more of the in-game dialogue and commentary as provided by DanaDuchy on their account/channel (also: thanks to DanaDuchy for providing the rest of us such wonderful resources on this and other games/works) and boy the dev team did a wonderful job of just adding more of those little details to help make the setting feel alive. Like it’s honestly really cool to hear the NPCs talk about how haunted the King’s Hot Springs Hotel or the Catamount mines are, how Casey at the Spread Eagle makes the best loose meat/steamer/etc sandwiches and burgers in the entire county, the stories behind the Whistling Beaver Brewery, etc. It’s also pretty grim to hear the tales of all the people the cult’s taken and some of the things other people have seen the cult do, namely killing civilians in gruesomely inventive fashion. Which raises as an interesting problem for me as a fanfic writer is trying to figure out A) how much did the Seeds know about these particular clusters of mass murder, B) did they permit it if they knew about it ahead of time, and C) what purpose does it serve? Currently the answer to A is more than enough because the Seeds not knowing wouldn’t fit this AU nor their character builds in it to go well with the level of importance that the themes of responsibility and consequences carry both in the meta of the fic and in-world for Joshua personally. So that means for B, the Seeds are definitely permitting the additional senseless acts of cruelty noted in the dialogue and conflicted-conversations among the Peggies. Certainly they’re aware at least to some extent if not fully aware of the entirety of it, but I would assume based on the Heralds’ personalities that they all do like to know what their people get up to. They all seem like they would want to know the details of what’s going on for various reasons. I’m leaning towards having the particularly senseless murders be a mix of some acts the Seeds ordered, some acts they left open to interpretation to their followers who then took it to a dark extreme, and some acts were instigated by the followers alone. Basically: humans being humans during chaotic dark times and doing terrible, bad shit. Which leads to the conclusion for Joshua that the Seeds should be more disciplined about keeping their followers in line and not sinking down to this level of pointless evil. He’s not wild about their more purposeful evil acts either and is intent on trying to get them to stop the worst of that, but there are darker gradients of black and grey morality for him there to be more outraged by. So that pretty much wraps up C with the answer of “not much” other than humans being terrible to each other. Perhaps from the villainous perspective it helps terrorize the people of Hope County and whittle down the number of people the cult has to fight now or later, but overall that is still straight up mass murder. ...hm, that reminds me, I need to go tweak a line in a past chapter regarding the population of Hope County. I had it too low for there to be a reasonably-sized if small county aside from the cult’s numbers. Hm. I have the cult at around 1,800ish souls, with their goal being 3,000 total based on in-game commentary from nameless background NPCs, and the line from the Book of Joseph “A few thousand pure souls, whose mission would be to start over and repopulate the earth.” Doing a little quick search, there are some counties even in Montana that according to past censuses had 3,000 or less people in them. For it to feel a bit less likely that the Resistance and civilian population would be easily overwhelmed, it probably should be somewhat higher than the cult, since the county’s numbers will include those who cannot or do not want to fight—that being the old, the young, the ill, etc. Plus if the cult’s being quite so gruesomely wanton in the murdering sprees, that means they aren’t out to absorb the entire county, just most of it. But the cult must also be expecting losses on their side as well since this is a violent conquest they’re undertaking and all of Hope County’s armed to the teeth, if not as necessarily heavily as the cult itself seems to be. We’ll stick the vague number at around 2,400 civilians who are not in the cult for now then and add that to the notes—plus some of the cult’s population is certainly from the county itself pre-Reaping, not including increases that happen during the Reaping with all the active brainwashing, kidnapping, etc. Hm, given some of the generic-NPC-dialogue of how people were forcibly turned to being obedient members of the cult who actually did turn on and shoot their once-allies (and in that dialogue, the brainwashed were also long-time pre-Reaping neighbors of the speaker,) that makes Pratt’s situation in-game all the more interesting. He definitely recognizes the Deputy, whereas it sounded like the aforementioned brainwashed-individuals did not recognize their once-neighbors and friends at all. Pratt’s capable of thinking independent thoughts and he’s remained lucid enough to observe his surroundings and plan an escape, despite going on what sounds like a very dark “hunting trip” Jacob may have taken him on to hunt “deer” which sounds definitely like he was hallucinating in a bad way per his own lines. Jacob apparently isn’t a guy to miss out on using easy symbolism for his enemies, specifically the Whitetail Militia. That was probably not the only “hunting trip” Pratt and the other converts have been on, and that would potentially suggest that the converts are still possibly hallucinating much like how the Deputy is during the first portion of Jacob’s boss fight with the destroy-the-music-beacons visual effects, after exiting the Wolf’s Den. Is Pratt seeing something like that scene though? He doesn’t seem to be triggered by the music box or in the scenes where the music starts playing certainly. He’s surely been exposed to Jacob’s conditioning or at least the trials, and the list his name’s on would strongly suggest he passed his trial, dark as that is. Who did he kill as his sacrifice? Is he perhaps more immune to the Bliss effects? It seems to vary in intensity of how effective it is and how it effects people, based on their susceptibility to it—some factors may include addictive tendencies, personalities, etc, looking at generic-NPC-dialogue in Faith’s region. The sparkles that show up on the screen in addition to the red edges do lend themselves to interpreting that Jacob uses Bliss as part of the brainwashing regime, in addition to the hallucinations Pratt, the Deputy, and others seem to experience. (Also the Judges disappearing in Bliss clouds during the first half of Jacob’s boss fight, etc.) Either way, with the mention of no one expecting Jacob to go easy on Pratt, it seems like Pratt was more resistant to the brainwashing and breaking than Jacob expected, even in light of there being potentially more torment lined up for Pratt than the average captured civilian. (I suspect aside from Pratt’s involvement with the officers who tried to arrest Joseph, Jacob in particular is more likely to not think kindly of police men, given his time in Juvie and the events leading to him being sentenced to doing time, setting him on the path to joining the Army and the ensuing tragedy, and separated from his brothers when they were younger. Also possibly the lack of perceived protection from policemen in the times prior to their father Old Mad Seed’s arrest.) However, it could also be that Jacob deliberately set Pratt up to test his loyalty to Jacob and the Project by giving Pratt the opportunity to help the Deputy escape, instead (or a little from column A, a little from column B.) That music did come on awfully fast after the breakout after all, and perhaps Pratt hadn’t made his sacrifice yet. Maybe the Deputy was meant to be his sacrifice, in a less murderous way of just leaving the Deputy in Jacob’s hands. Seems like Jacob would have mentioned it if the Deputy was meant to be Pratt’s sacrifice by leaving them in the cage to their fate, but on the other hand it would fit the game’s plot and Jacob’s theme real well. Plus Jacob’s a cunning bastard and able to plot this kind of scheme out quite readily, I would say. This all probably means I need to flesh out more of the fic’s world with background NPCs here and there a bit more for the plot. That being said, I’m all excited to be borrowing with permission AU versions of some of my friend’s OCs for this. It’s definitely a new addition to the plotting that I hadn’t started out with, but feels like they’d fit in well with the plot overall. Two of the OCs will have a significant impact on Jacob as a character across his entire timeline in the past, present, and future. It’ll be an interesting challenge to deal with that, since while I do want to try to interpret the characters as close to their original canon lines and outlooks as possible, I feel this addition does open up more preexisting lines for Jacob that do fit the hints we get of his internal workings from in-game. It’ll mean he’s got more development in certain areas of his psyche and mental state, but a little bit of twisting here and there still keeps it all in line with the initial interpretation this AU’s got for him. I do feel the addition of the OCs will help bring Jacob to be more emotionally involved than he potentially was to begin with before the real-world-now with the intended future events of the fic, and this creates much more potential for up-close-and-personal levels of emotional exploration for the entire lot of them, both positive and negative emotions. ...oo, we might get to see Jacob actually losing his cool on-screen externally as a result of possible plot happenings. That could lead to an entire mess of the entire Seed family being angry and yelling at each other, creating emotional development. It’s really quite fascinating to try to work out how to get a group to actually get along well with characters like Faith, John, Joseph, and Jacob who are often at odds with each other. All while dealing with their rampant personal issues. Still something to study and test out for other original writings—haven’t quite learned how to take that kind of group dynamic apart and construct something from that inspiration yet. But definitely learning as we go. Back to listening to more NPC dialogue recordings though.

5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?
I think if I had to pick I would go with The Whole of Us (is greater than the sum of our broken pieces). Not necessarily because I like that story the best (although I do like it very much!) but because that story is novel length. Guys I wrote a novel.
I can remember in my early days of writing fic being all sad and wistful at @josephina-x because all my fics were so short and I want to write long fics like all the lovely ones I was reading. (Jo was super amazing and supportive of course, always cheering me on as my fics got longer and longer). And now ~7 years later and I’ve written a novel.
12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?
Goodness, I love all of my babies! But if I had to choose, I had a lot of fun writing grown-up Mabel in Five Years Older. Mostly because while her and my interests don’t exactly align (I am way nerdier than Mabel) in terms of general personality Mabel is super similar to my best self’s personality. It was a lot of fun just getting to live there because it’s basically my happy place.
22) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?
Nope, because I just don’t reread those. :P
But in seriousness, yeah I have some old ones that aren’t that great, IMO. In particular (and this is not going to be a popular opinion, I don’t think) I don’t like The Crazy F’ed Up Life of Conner Kent. The writing is just so rushed and the plot is all over the place. It’s a mess really.
29) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?
*deadpan stare* ALL of them. (Except the few that are bad. And maybe Ain’t Gonna Face No Defeat, because that’s getting a lot of love, like whoa, thank you guys so much!) More specifically, there are times when I write in smaller fandoms or for more rare pairs and even though I know walking in it’s not going to get the same response as some of my other stuff covering more popular things, but it’s still a little disappointing.
49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
I do! It would have been sometime in late 2010 and I had just watched the anime Princess Tutu for the first time. I had been feeling a sort of listless melancholy before starting the show, but it just lifted me so much, you have no idea. Except when it was over I started to fall back into that melancholy. I was desperate for more content. I read basically every related page on tvtropes and finally clicked on the fanfic recs. At this point I had only ever heard of fanfic as the butt of a joke, but like I said, I was desperate.
Enter The Heart of Everything. The first line is “Once upon a time there was a man who did not die.” Which, if you’ve seen the anime, is a very poignant and chilling opening line. It’s an AU retelling of Princess Tutu placed in a medieval fantasy setting that draws on the story within a story The Prince and the Raven and also emphasizes Princess Tutu’s Swan Lake origins. It’s a beautiful sweeping story that struck me at the time as being better than many published books I’d read. (It’s also a dead WIP, just so you know what you’re getting into if you follow the link there.) I made an account on FFN for the express purpose of leaving a review on that story (I didn’t know guest reviews were a thing at the time.) Roughly 2 weeks later I posted my own first fanfic.
Send me a fanfic writer ask.

Fanfic trope meme
Apologies to those of you who see this for a third time, as I’ve crossposted it to both LJ and Pillowfort. Feel free to comment over on there (or my other posts) if you like. And of course, feel free to grab this one and do it yourself, if you like.
***
Grabbed this meme from a couple of people on LJ. It's... well, apparently about fanfic tropes. Some of them more terrifying than others.
I have written:
-Hurt/comfort (Yeah, baby! Most of my fic is this.)
-Body swapping (Sort of? Souls slipping into each other's bodies for a bit? Jaffar feeling what Yassamin feels? Sex swap, I've definitely done.)
-Soulmate identifying marks (tattoo, red thread of fate, etc) (I have! The Throne of Solomon. And maybe The Past Forgotten counts, in its way. I may have written more, but I forget.)
-Snowed-in cabin/isolated together for extended period of time (The Jaffar/Pwinzezz Cavefic!)
-Found families (I guess the Samarkand gang counts for poor old Fadl? Even if Jaffar *is* his brother, so technically it is his family. But he does have his religious congregation and Zainab, and is... well, he always does seem to be seeking something, so he's the kind of guy to go for this trope.)
-Fairy tale/mythology AU (And not just when I am  writing in *actual* fairytale/mythology fandoms. Which I am doing most of the time, what with Thief of Bagdad being a 1001 Nights fanfic anyway. So I'm writing fanfic about a fanfic of some age-old RPF (fantasy AU!) about historical figures from the late 700s/early 800s...)
-Enemies  to friends to lovers (Yes, please! Aplenty. I'm surprised that  enemyslash/FoeYay/Hero(ine)/Villain(ess), whatever you want to call it,  isn't mentioned on this list.)
-Characters swap roles AU (Uh... I've written sexual switching in some isolated chapters? Like when Laura  briefly doms Torsten in The Fall of Angels, to help him get over some traumas?)
-Friends to lovers (With RPS, Veidtbone in particular, and Theta/Koschei. This also seems to happen whenever I write femslash.)
-Magical  connection (telepathy, etc) (Doctor/Master basically ruined me for all  my other ships what with their telepathic ability. So that now, it feels less interesting for me to write love/sex that *doesn't* have telepathy.)
-Fake dating/fake marriage accidentally turns into feelings (see next trope)
-Royals/political marriage turns into feelings (These last two are pretty much the same thing in ToB, as I've had Yassamin marry Jaffar a couple of times--like The Past Forgotten and The King's White Falcon, but without him laying a hand on her for up to a year, until she finally grows a brain and realises how loveworthy he is after all.)
-Seemingly unrequited pining (Emphasis on the "seemingly." Jaffar's unrequited   pining is painful enough in the movie, so there's no point in making him  suffer any more.)
-Accidentally fell in love with the mission target (Well, *kind of,* what with Torsten. Lars-Erik was definitely his mission target in the original film, and at the start of Because The World Belongs to the Devil, he made no bones about having wanted to kill Laura Erika [the teenage girl version of Lars-Erik in this AU, to those of you just joining in] when she was born.)
-They break up (but then they get back together) (With Jaffar/Fadl.  Fadl's stormed off in a huff at least twice in the past. And Doctor/Master is always the same old on-off car crash, isn't it? Although this is not a favourite trope of mine, as the setup would usually necessitate them being an existing couple in the first place,  and I tend to not write canon or "plausibly lovers" ships because   they're already happily together. What do Two and Jamie, Holmes and   Watson etc. need me for? They're already as good as married. Let them have their happiness.)
-Supernatural creature/human romance (Sort of. I've written Time Lords/humans, humans/djinn at least. And surely wizards count as supernatural romance, anyway?)
-Reincarnation/'25  Lives' AU (What's with the 25 lives? Is this some big fandom thing again? One of the darkest, most fucked-up fics I ever wrote was the Master killing the Doctor during sex and fucking him as he regenerated around him. As you do. And there's reincarnation in one of my Jaffar/Pwinzezz fics,  but I won't spoil it for the new readers by telling you which one it is.)
-Selfcest (possibly due to time travel) (I am scratching my head trying to remember when I wrote this and in which fandom, but I have the distinct feeling I've written it. I've certainly whacked off to  that World Of Simm!Masters clusterfuck what with the pink dress so many  times I... I think I broke two clit buzzers during that time. I've certainly drawn it. And drawn some Connies on Connies. And then there's, of course, Sarosh the Sexbot  who's a clone of Jaffar, looks-wise, but he is very distinctly just a robot, not a living character as such--not the sort with which you could  have a real, interpersonal dynamic. My problem with selfcest, in general, is that I like having that character dynamic--and that requires  the characters to be different from one another. If it's two characters  that are too similar--if they fulfill a similar role in the canons--it's hard to create a dynamic between them and to make it   interesting.)
-Polyamory (Swinging away ALL the bloody time with the Roses!Jaffar and Yassamin, and Torsten/Laura. Sometimes I miss the monogamous 'verses.)
-Amnesia (I've got a post-movie "Jaffar comes  back from the dead" WIP I'll probs never finish, because it doesn't seem to get off the ground. If I wrote this trope, I would have the characters gradually regain memory, though; complete mind-wipes are   horrid. I did have Handy lose the majority of his cognitive/motor/Timey skills in No More  and that was the main reason I had to... well, I'm not going to spoil it if someone hasn't read it yet, but it wasn't the cheeriest of fics. The Past Forgotten *sort of* has this, but I don't want to spoil as to how that happens.)
***
I could write:
-Daemons (Why the archaic spelling? I have written djinn, so I almost put this in the 'have written' section. I can't remember if I actually *have* written real demons, because I might have. Surely, Torsten counts...)
-'Everyone is evil'/mirrorverse AU (Well, mostly, if I want to explore "evil"   characters, I write about those types of characters in the first place, without having to turn anyone evil. Devilry is the 'verse for that. Hell, usually it's the other way around; I try to look for the human elements of the baddies, or at least explore their logic--what makes them tick, what makes them the way they are. So, IDK, I could've also   put this in the "unlikely to ever write" section.)
-And they were roommates! (This would be terrible and also hilarious, whatever characters ended up becoming my victims. Even if I'm more interested in those hurt/comfort plots, overall. And I have always found it *impossible* to live under the same roof with other people because I need peace and quiet and solitude too much. So this is almost a bit too much like the sorts of negative RL experiences I don't really want to get more of in fic.  But I *could* write it as a comedy for cheap lols, especially if the stress were resolved by hot bonking, ASAP.)
-'They  all work in an office' AU (Otherwise, I would've put this in the "just  no" category, but... the Barmakids were civil servants. So I *could*   write Jaffar and Fadl drowning in paperwork--"WHY DID WE EVER introduce paper into THIS EMPIRE?!?" and cursing their fates and Jaffar restraining Fadl from braining Harun al-Rashid with a paperweight. Same with Lina doing Zainab's books and trying to hold back The Fist of Death when Fadl carelessly drops a piece of his lunch over her perfectly calligraphied accounting.)
-'Falling for a coworker/teammate is a bad idea' except this is fiction so it works out (Maybe. Just maybe. But it'd also be in a medieval ToB context.)
***
I will probably never write:
-'Groundhog  Day'/karmic time loop (I just never got the appeal of this. Sounds like the sort of thing experimental writers would like? The sorts who really  like filling in bingo cards and challenge lists?)
-Vampires/werewolves  AU (I'm not that big on either. Super-unpopular opinion coming up: I prefer sex to the sublimation of it that vampires are often all about; bloodsucking in lieu of sex, and/or being seen as way better than sex just always feel to me like a cheap cop-out from writers who are disappointed in sex, or afraid of it. I've never grokked it any more   than that stupid, stupid "chocolate is better than sex" quip from women who don't know what masturbation is--yes, it fucking well is sex, TYVM! I much prefer to make partnered sex better than it is IRL by adding supernatural stuff like telepathy to *that*. Immortality alone is interesting to explore, as are Gothic themes, but all the usual themes that vampires *specifically* usually represent just... either hold little interest for me, or then, I can explore them in other ways.)
-'Pride  and Prejudice' AU (I don't hate Jane Austen, but it's not my fandom. That kind of society stuff and being witty over teacups in bonnets has never really been my thing--if anything, I usually have my characters exist in their own bubble, isolated from society and its restrictive mores and social stresses.)
***
JUST NO!
-Coffee  house AU/food service AU (AUGH! Please, no coffeeshop AUs for me; the world is full of them already. Maybe I could write it as some terrible, short parody? Or doodle it? But no more than that.)
-Hogwarts AU (Haven't read HP. Young Adult isn't really my genre. I know, I know; I've just lost all my WLW cred.)
-High  school/university AU (I've done Time Lord Academy-era stuff with Doctor/Master, but I expect this means a sort of American high school/university AU with jocks and cheerleaders and shit. Hell, no. Again, the exact sort of horrid society stuff I would rather have my characters escape from.)
-Adopting/raising a baby (Erm, not unless you count Jaffar/Yassamin adopting a cheetah? They do have kids in some 'verses but there's none of that everyday baby stuff that this question/trope probably implies. I'm squicked by   babies, sorry.)
-Unusually specific occupation AU, like, the Author clearly has the same job (It worries me that this is, by virtue of its inclusion here, apparently seen as normal and acceptable..? When it's crap fanfic, inserting yourself into something that should be about the *established* characters instead. Jesus, I don't want to go in expecting a fanfic, and then find out it’s your diary instead! Unless you're Anaïs Nin. And even if you really *do* want to write about yourself, then just... write original fic? An autobiography? A blog? Write an OC that has your job. Don't do this false advertising where you insist it's fanfic when it's not. That's a dick move towards your readers.)
-Loyalty kink (see next trope)
-Alpha/beta/omega (Too creepy. I can write about piss, shit, incest, necrophilia and cannibalism, but not these last two. Any more than I can glorify the Nazis I've written about; I either take the piss out of them, as with Strasser, or just step outside of their politics and bring them into the land of happy sexings like with von Kolb, with the aim of dragging him out of that madness and leaving it behind.)
-Hot single parent(s) (Please. Rundvik: "You love children." Torsten: "I loooooathe themm.")
-Unrequited pining (Too much of an emotional squick. Has to be requited. I write fanfic to fix things, to avenge wrongs, to set things right. I don't write them to make the characters more miserable than they already are. Unless it's for temporary, character-development purposes, that is.)

So reading all of you amazing works as well as following the content of other lovely Sheith shippers has inspired to finally write some fan fiction and contribute too! It’s been literal years since I’ve written anything though, and of course the story that got me really excited is going to have to be a multi chapter monster. As the master of long and complex fanfics, any advice for beginners?
Good!! I believe in you.
Sure, why the heck not :’) been awhile since I made a big writing tips post and I feel like I have some new things to offer since the last one. I don’t know if your fic is gonna be an AU or canon-compliant, but since my specialty is long and complex multichapter AUs, this is mainly gonna be about that.
First, you can check out my ‘writing tips’ tag for my own tips and tips from others on tumblr: http://saltyshiro.tumblr.com/tagged/writing-tips
The most important advice I can give to you as a writer is to READ. I don’t read nearly as much as I used to, but I still try to when I can. Reading was what gave me the inspiration and knowledge I needed for worldbuilding, which is a vital part of not just AUs, but any long and complex fic. You need to be confident about writing the world you’ve stuck your characters in. You have to know that world better than anyone.
More often than not, books aimed at children actually have better worldbuilding than books for adults. There are exceptions to this (a lot of sci-fi, like Dune & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, for example, as well as dystopian fiction like The Handmaid’s Tale), but some of my favorite worlds remain those from children’s books. They include:
The Ever After in the May Bird & the Ever After series
The absurdist and time-period defiant world where anything goes (as long as it’s unfortunate) of A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Other World in Coraline & London Below Gaiman’s adult fantasy novel Neverwhere
The world populated by various small animals like mice, rats, and squirrels in Redwall by Brian Jacques
The medieval kingdoms of Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
The eerie surrealist circus world of The Palace of Laughter by Jon Berkeley
I’m also currently working my way through the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, which is some INCREDIBLE worldbuilding in a high fantasy setting.
So what do all of these have in common? Well, contrary to popular belief, I don’t think you have to go Full Tolkien and write a brand new language as well as six thousand maps for your world. Nope. None of that is required. All that is required is that you LOVE the world you created. Love the heck out of it. Even if it’s a shitty world. Doesn’t matter. It’s YOUR shitty world.
The more you love this world of yours, the more you’re gonna want to write about it, and the more reluctant you will be to let yourself drop the project. The pitfall many fanfic writers (and writers in general) fall into when writing long works is that they get burnt out and tired of their own story. You can’t get tired of your story if you keep adding to the world and finding new things to love and explore within it.
Worldbuilding reflects onto your characters, too - people are in many ways a product of their surroundings, after all. If your world is shitty, then your characters might end up a little shitty, too. But - and here’s the clever thing about this - because you love your world so much, and because your characters are an integral part of that world (they should be, if they’re your protagonist/villain/etc), you end up loving your characters, too. It feels like a betrayal if you stop writing their stories, and the world you’ve created should at this point feel almost like a real place, albeit within your head and your imagination. And when that happens, writing about your world and characters doesn’t feel like a chore or an obligation anymore. It feels like an adventure.
That being said, human brains have limits and it shouldn’t ALL exist in your head. You gotta take notes, do some doodles and simple maps if you’re into that, and also use resources made specifically to organize worldbuilding. I tend to just use good ol’ fashioned pencil and paper, but I’ve heard this tool is pretty good for digital organization:
https://www.notebook.ai/
Additionally, don’t be afraid to uh....“borrow” from other worlds that have been made before. The sooner you understand that everyone kinda steals (respectfully) from everyone (i.e. the lion king is hamlet; romeo and juliet is heavily inspired by the greek myth of pyramus and thisbe), the better off you’re gonna be in worldbuilding. You can, and unavoidably will, use worlds you’ve read about and/or experienced in the past in your own worldbuilding. It becomes a patchwork of your own, and once you have a base for your world, it becomes increasingly easy to add onto it and expand with more original ideas.
It can also be helpful to do a ton of research. Say you want your world to somewhat resemble Victorian England. How are you gonna know what that was like? Watch movies set in Victorian England to understand the aesthetic and speech. Watch documentaries to get a more factual basis. Read books set in Victorian England for the language and the societal ideas. Go on a Wikipedia or Google deep dive - almost always, you will end up in a much more interesting place than you expected. Listening to music can also be super helpful to get into a particular tone you want to see in your world, or can help you find the tone if you’re not sure what you want yet. I have playlists for most of my stories.
And, finally, understand that there’s always room for growth. I know my worldbuilding can be better than it is, so with every new story, I strive to make a more vibrant, vivid, lovable world than before. And guess what? Usually, not only does it work, but I also enjoy myself while writing more.
The key to long and complex fics is genuinely enjoying what you’re writing. You may be able to bullshit and slog your way through a shorter fic, but not a 200k monster. Another important key - know where your story is going to end up.
You need a goal to work towards. Maybe it’s a scene you’ve been wanting to write since you came up with the story. It doesn’t have to be the ending, but it helps if it is. You should know the ending by at least the middle of the story. I’m pretty sure I’ve written stories where that wasn’t the case and I was just flying by the seat of my pants, seeing where my world and characters took me next...which is a valid way to approach writing, but riskier, and ultimately rather frustrating when writing fics since you can’t exactly go back and insert foreshadowing for the ending you didn’t know was coming, lol.
I find late-night brainstorms best for figuring out how I want to end stories. I’ll open up a word doc, think for a good while, and then just start typing. Type it out stream of consciousness style. It doesn’t need to be a good explanation of the events, it just has to be an explanation. (This is also helpful in long stories for writing down reoccuring elements you don’t want to forget, such as slang, societal titles, a promise a character made to another than they really need to bring up again sometime...)
For example, here is my stream of consciousness brain-spew for my fic Seal It With A Kiss (this did not all end up happening quite like this, but here it is, warning for nsfw mentions lmao):
Witch Classes: Apprentice, novice, journeyman, master/magus, archmagus
The Wastes – western desert wasteland, Keith is from Blackwater, three days’ ride from the Citadel. It’s bordered by the River Acheron to the west, on the other side of which are the lands where Keith’s father lived with his first wife. The ocean is to the north, with the island of Cobao directly south of the Citadel.
The Citadel – centrally located, perched among Asphodel Peaks, near the lowland Oscuran Woods. Capital, Altea City, is three days’ ride to the east. Shiro’s grandparents live to the south on the shores of Lake Lucanus, a major fishing outpost bordered by the Dalterion Swamplands to the south.
THE VOID: mysterious dimension (or entity?) accidentally opened by witches eons ago (oops), which created Hell and unleashed demons/monsters/old gods (Voidborn). It is made up of what witches call infernal magic – a powerful and supposedly corrupted/corrupting form of quintessence. The Void is largely unknown and inaccessible to humans. Few return, and those who do are always changed by it.
HELL: Thought to be a reflection of the Void on a more physical/less abstract plane. Hell is made up of many pocket realms, including Daibazaal (one of the largest, ruled by the Galra), and Stratonikeia (ruled by Hecate). It is populated by Voidborn, who carve out sections of it for themselves in warlord-esque fashion.
Neither Hell nor the Void are inherently “evil,” though most witches consider them so, and they are dangerous. While the most well-established Voidborn rule with law and order, many other parts are lawless chaos centered around power struggles, and all Voidborn are morally gray to an extent.
VOIDBORN: Despite their vast differences, all Voidborn derive power from human souls & quintessence. Often generalized as demons, Voidborn are secular beings with no “holy” counterpart (i.e. angels), however, they come in many forms:
SPECTERS: generally the weakest Voidborn, they lack corporeal form and often “haunt” areas with histories of death, grief, and bloodshed, frightening humans and feeding off of their fear.
MONSTERS: a large and varied group of Voidborn, not as intelligent nor powerful as demons. They are the mostly likely to directly attack/kill/eat humans and are often hunted, with trophies of their heads displayed outside remote villages to ward off other monsters.
OLD GODS: a more rare group which often overlaps with greater demons; old gods can be benevolent if appeased (i.e. through ritual sacrifice, favors, offerings, worship, etc). They define territories for themselves and over time can become deified by local peoples, since old gods have been known to protect their lands and the people within them in exchange for worship.
LESSER DEMONS: more intelligent than monsters but less powerful than greater demons and old gods, they often rely on contracts and trickery to get their way. They are known to be petty, cruel, and ugly.
GREATER DEMONS: highly intelligent and powerful, they are dangerous beings who chiefly use contracts, torture, manipulation, and possession to take power from souls, which they crave more than any other Voidborn.
*Haggar has been cloaking Keith from Krolia so she cannot find her son since Keith went to the Citadel*
Shiro was captured by Haggar, who experimented on him (gave him the arm, which is powered by infernal energy/Void quintessence and began to corrupt his soul/erode it) and used him as a gladiator, until she managed to capture and slay Kurobasanir, whose quintessence she combined with the remnants of Shiro’s soul. His soulless, empty body was left to fight in the arena as a kind of robotic killing machine, while Shiro’s self became entangled with Kurobasanir. Because Kurobasanir was dead but Shiro was alive and so determined to stay alive, Shiro’s soul (primed with the Void energy which allowed him to stand up against Kuro) took control, though he gained Kurobasanir’s memories, abilities, and personality, while losing/forgetting his own. However as time passes with Keith, Shiro’s subconscious (ironically the only part of him which is still conscious/knows who he is) begins to break through, making him more ‘human’ as he starts to remember who he is/have doubts that he is really Kurobasanir.
He is unable to shift into any other human but Shiro, falls in love with Keith (demons are supposedly incapable of love), experiences sudden surges of emotion/nostalgia and feels protective towards Shiro’s family/horse/possessions/etc, is mostly unaffected by spells that should exorcise or defeat demons, and acts differently than the original Kurobasanir according to the late incubus’s friends. Because Kurobasanir was a sadist, but Shiro is not, so when he fucks Keith in front of the other demons, they know something’s up because he’s not hurting Keith at all.
What he doesn’t remember/know, though, is that this whole thing is a trap set by Haggar in order to lure Keith, who is a cambion (half demon, half human) to her so she can experiment on him in her quest to gain immortality so she can stay with Zarkon forever without surrendering her soul/turn her own soul into a demon’s essence. Because cambion, once mature, are effectively immortal and have a soul, while still retaining dormant Void magic within them which allows for their immortality and more demonic qualities. They are also extremely rare, and Haggar only knows of Keith because Hekate (Krolia) was her mentor and mentioned him.
So when Keith and Shiro go to find Shiro at the Samhain Tourney, Keith sees Shiro’s soulless body fighting and goes to break him out of his cell in the intermission; Shiro, not recognizing him/caring about him/trained to kill on sight tries to kill him, Keith is horrified and unable to bring himself to hurt Shiro, so he is saved by Kurobasanir, who realizes the situation fully once he comes face to face with the body that was once his, realizing his (Shiro’s) soul has been transferred into the incubus’s.
Before he can tell Keith this, though, Keith is captured by Haggar (who he recognizes as Honerva) and the two are separated. Keith cries alone in his cell, thinking Shiro is gone for good and also thinking Kurobasanir betrayed him and/or will be killed or tortured, leaving him utterly alone again. Lots of time passes and Keith realizes Haggar is trying to break the bond between him and Kurobasanir, because they’re both trapped and the contract must be sealed via sex. So Keith is in agony (and very very horny) because he can’t touch Shiro, and the contract is on the verge of breaking (and causing a great deal of pain and harm to both of them, since it was broken against their will) when Hekate/Krolia shows up, kicks BUTT, and bc she’s Mom of the Year, rescues Keith and brings him to Shiro while explaining on the way what happened. She also mentions that Keith’s father left because he was fulfilling the contract Hekate had with him, which was that because he was infertile she would bear him a “human” son (Keith), who would be blessed by her and live a happy/prosperous life, but in exchange Keith’s dad would only get sixteen years with his son, and then Hecate would take his soul.
As it turns out, though, Hekate/Krolia grew pretty darn fond of Keith’s dad (he’s a human teddy bear hedge mage unfazed by demons, what’s not to love), so he’s just chilling in Hell with her and had planned to come back and tell Keith the whole story, but when he returned Keith had gone off to the Citadel & Haggar was hiding Keith from Hecate.
So Keith and Shiro reunite and they’re so desperate for each other that they basically end up fucking while escaping (Keith is VERY EMBARRASSED but Krolia is like boi I am the mistress of dark magic, I don’t care, get that demon dick, proud of u son. Plus Shiro does his best to hide Things), cue a very wild scene in which both Keith and Shiro are kicking ass while fucking, since Shiro has regained his powers and Keith is Restored By The Power of Shiro’s Dick. Amen. Hallelujah.
Thankfully they finish up by the time they find the Holts, who were being forced to do alchemy stuff in Haggar’s lab. Haggar’s druids attack them, but Keith, who has read up on Honerva’s magic/theories, and Krolia, who mentored Honerva and is now pissed at her bc she tried to use Krolia’s son for her experiments, defeat the druids and are about to destroy Haggar’s research. Then Haggar bursts in, and in a desperate attempt to save her life’s work tells Keith that she can separate Shiro’s soul from Kurobasanir if he spares her/her work. Shiro is actually the one who hesitates, since he thinks Keith deserves much better than him and should have him fully human, as he appeared in their future together. But Keith has made up his mind – he loves Shiro in any and every form, and he’s done with Haggar’s shit. Furious at the thought of what she did to Shiro and planned to do to him, Keith’s magic creates a massive explosion which destroys the lab as Krolia uses one of Haggar’s traveling crystals to take them all away from Daibazaal.
Krolia takes them to her realm of Stratonikeia, a much more chill part of Hell. Because it’s Samhain and everyone is partying, Hecate’s palace is hectic and full of drunk demons and debauchery bc demons just wanna have fun, okay? Krolia makes sure the Holts are given safe accomodations so they can rest up and receive treatment before returning home. Meanwhile, Keith and Shiro are very shaken and Keith is weak from using so much magic to destroy Haggar and her lab. He and Shiro manage to escape the party and get to a balcony or something, where Shiro tearfully apologizes for everything, saying he understands if Keith wants to break ties after their contract is over, and that he wishes it didn’t have to end like this. Keith is quiet, then tells him that nothing is ending, pointing out that apparently he’s also immortal, and that technically Shiro gets his immortal soul in return for completing the contract. Shiro misunderstands, panicking and assuring Keith he will not take his soul and will leave him alone, but Keith cups his face and says he wants Shiro to have him forever, because he loves him, and never stopped loving him. Disbelieving but hopeful, Shiro embraces him gently, and when they kiss Keith begins to show his demonic characteristics (little horns, glowing eyes, tail, reddish scales).
Epilogue – Keith and Shiro get married. In Hell. It’s beautiful. They also have the most romantic, tender, kinky demon/cambion sex ever. They’re in love and together forever :’))
*
I hope that helps, dear!! Best of luck in your writing endeavors.

Q&A with redcandle17
Get to know one of SanSan fanfic’s earliest writers, @redcandle17
Q- How long have you been writing fanfiction?
A- I started writing fan fiction when I was twelve years old. Fan fiction was the first fiction I ever wrote. At that age I was a huge fan of L.J. Smith's novels, especially the Night World series. I was a member of a LJ Smith fan mailing list that included fan fiction, which was also my introduction to fan fiction as a thing that existed. I distinctly remember the very first fan fic I ever wrote: I was sitting in the school cafeteria during lunch and I was thinking of Greek mythology and the Night World series and suddenly I began writing it down instead of just letting it play out in my imagination.
Q- Do you still have a copy?
A- No, I tore up the hard copy years ago, and the copy I had on my angelfire.com webpage disappeared into the ether.
Q- How did you choose your username?
A- When my family switched from AOL to another internet service provider, I needed to create a new account. I couldn't think of anything, so I looked around my room and I noticed a red candle. I needed to add a number to it, and since I was 17 at the time, I went with that number. I'm actually quite attached to 'redcandle17' as my online identity since I've had it for almost seventeen years. I've been redcandle17 for literally half my life.
Q- When did you first get into SanSan?
A- I first read ASoIaF in the fall of 2006. I was in a very bad phase of my life and GRRM's amazing world gave me a place to escape to. While reading A Game of Thrones, I didn't like Sansa at first and I didn't care about the Hound - right until the night of the Hand's Tourney. The Hound's backstory and him choosing to tell Sansa made him much more sympathetic and interesting, and Sansa's reaction to it made her more likable and interesting. By the end of A Clash of Kings, they were my favorite characters.
Of course, I had some qualms about shipping a character Sansa's age with an adult character, but the pseudo-medieval setting and the fact that GRRM used so many romance tropes with Sansa and Sandor assuaged my guilt. ASoIaF in general and SanSan in particular consumed me.
At that time, however, there were fewer than five fan fics in existence in English-speaking ASoIaF fandom. I began writing ASoIaF fan fiction because I wanted to read ASoIaF fan fiction. I made the acquaintance of other female ASoIaF fans on Livejournal and together we basically said 'fuck you' to the anti-fan fic sentiment that had predominated in the fandom.
I created the LJ communities asoiaf_exchange and sansaxsandor in the spring of 2007. Fanwork exchanges are a great way to encourage new content. It's very effective in a fandom as small as ASoIaF was at the time. And sansaxsandor was a place to ship SanSan in peace, safe from harassment from fanboys who looked down on shipping and were disgustingly misogynist towards Sansa.
Basically, I shipped SanSan like it was my job. :D
Q- Is there a SanSan fic you’re particularly proud of?
A- I'm especially pleased with Songbird. I worked very hard on it and I think I succeeded in conveying what I was trying to convey.
Q- Anything you’re embarrassed of or wish you hadn’t written?
A- Not for SanSan. There are things I've written for other pairings and other fandoms that I think I didn't do a good enough job with, but I'm pleased with all the SanSan I've written.
Q- Any SanSan fic of your own that you wish got more attention?
A- A Walk In The Garden. I really loved the unexpected emotional intimacy and the sexual tension that Sansa isn't yet aware that that's what it is of Sansa's and Sandor's scenes together in AGoT and ACoK, and I wished there had been even more scenes like those. A Walk In The Garden was me trying to write one of those scenes for myself.
Q- Any comments you’ve received that stick out, even now?
A- The best comments I've received on my ASoIaF fics over the years were the ones that praised my fidelity to canon. I've been told a couple of times that a fic could have been a missing scene from the books, which is the greatest compliment I could ever receive as a ASoIaF fan fic writer.
I also like it when people enjoy my SanSan crack!fics. I am very fond of my silly little crack!fics and I like knowing they amuse other people.
Q- Are there tropes/styles/genres you struggle with?  Any that are almost too easy?
A- I'm good at darker fic and at humor, but not good at all the stuff in-between. That's true of me for all pairings and fandoms, not just SanSan. I basically have no middle ground as a writer. I think it's probably due to my lack of patience. I like the immediate gratification of fluff/funny crack!fics and the emotional intensity of dark!fics, but I just don't have the patience for long, plotty drama.
Q- When you start a fic, do you know where it will end?  Or do you figure it out along the way?
A- Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Usually it's just a general idea in my head. I'm very much not the type of writer who writes an outline before they write a story. I just do it.
For a period of time when I was much younger, I did try using outlines since I was taught that was the correct way to write. But I found that once I had a story plotted out in a formal outline, I lost interest in actually writing it.
I want to be entertained while I am writing, I don't want it to feel like work.
I like just writing and seeing where the characters will take me. That's what works for me.
Q- Do you have any rituals/conditions for ‘getting in the mood’ to write?
A- There are some songs I find inspiring, so I'll put an inspiring song on repeat and try to write. Sometimes it works, and sometimes nothing works.
I'd put Sarah McLachlan's "Possession" on repeat while I was writing Songbird.
Q- Any tips for overcoming writer’s block?
A- The one that usually works for me is this: write what you *want* to write. Don't censor yourself, don't try to write what you think you should write, don't hold back from writing what other people tell you that you shouldn't write. Just write what you truly want to write.
Q- Any tips for nervous writers looking to post their first (or second, or twentieth) fic?
A- Even if it seems like no one will be interested in reading your story, there will be at least one person. It's a huge internet and no matter what you're into, there will be at least one person who shares your interest in a given AU scenario, pairing, or tiny obscure canon. Write for that unknown person.
Just don't worry about the people who may not like your fics, and focus on the people who will like it.
Q- Aspirations of publishing one day?
A- Nope. Writing is something I do for fun. Turning it into work would add too much stress and strip it of all enjoyment for me.
I would like to start writing more original fic though. There are some story ideas I want to read that won't exist, so I'll have to write them myself if I can.
Q- Will you be posting your original fic?
A- Yes, I'll probably post the original fic. But I've got to write it first and before I start writing it, I want to finish the fan fics I currently have in progress. So that's years away.
Q- Did you make any friends in SanSan that you still talk to today?
A- I've met some great people through our shared shipping of SanSan and although I'm no longer really active in ASoIaF fandom, I've remained acquainted with some of them.
Q- Anything you’d like to say to the SanSan fandom at large?
A- Just keep in mind that HBO's show is essentially an AU of ASoIaF at this point and that whatever happens or doesn't happen on it doesn't mean anything for bookverse SanSan.
Q- Anything you’d like to add?
A- SanSan forever! I may no longer be active in the fandom, but Sansa/Sandor will always be my OTP.

ALSO re: your tags - you’re right and I TOTALLY AGREE that there needs to be more Hanseatic League in fantasy! It’s something I grumble about when people talk about “medieval fantasy”, we’re generally seeing one hell of a narrow image of medieval times. (And now I’m thinking I might draw on the League a little for the Hwenti, bc I was already thinking of them as a seagoing culture with city-states and lots of trading. Although they’re also an Athenian-style democracy…)
Yeah, Tolkien is where I don’t have a problem with the lack of representational government- but there is a discussion to be hand about how prevalent monarchies are in American SF among other things.
The Hanseastic League is just so cool and I wish I knew more.
The original story stuff (that dumb rose story) is where I do two things- dump all the story ideas and especially expies and fanfic au ideas that I want to write but don’t want to write for that fandom. And force myself to write a setting that was “Medieval Fantasy” where I didn’t pull fashion from the Renaissance or go play in the Bronze Age. Which...I couldn’t help myself. But as I was setting up the basic medieval kingdom, I immediately decided that having just a king and lords was boring, so the king was an emperor that needed to be ratified by a group of Prince-Electors and some of those voting seats were clergy-held because my knowledge of the Holy Roman Empire might be mostly limited to Historical Fiction AU in the 1600s when those Elector votes are about to become obsolete in importance, but darn if that isn’t more interesting. And stock medieval fantasy needed more free charter towns and imperial cities. And that made me think of the Hanseatic League. And magical boats somehow. And then when I had to dump a bunch of Green Lanterns into this universe, well, perfect! If you’re forced to read Mark Twain and learn a little history of the American West, the river boat pilots stick in your head. Magic space interpol cops become magic templar summoners who exclusively work as ship pilots and security hired by the fantasy version Hanseatic League. Because I say so, and it works well with wacky mermaids!

Since this went over so well last year I decided to do it again! Cheers to the new year, lets start it off with some positivity towards the writers in this fandom! I love y’all and I’m wishing you the best of luck in this new year!!
Alternate universes:
Curiosity Killed the Cat by @thatmasquedgirl //  A cat adopts Oliver. He isn’t too happy about it. || This is one of those I ran across in the middle of the night and was like wtf, but also yes. It’s w o n d e r f u l.
Immortals by @therewas-a-girl //  To die for love, to die of love, to die in love, to die with love, to die over love, to die without love, to die to love, to die in the mine, and be a “mine,” in the arms of someone’s chest wound, “Here I will die of the above.” || Persphone and Hades, okay. Persphone and freaking Hades, but not in the “usual” way. This story is like crack.
Birds of a Feather by @alexiablackbriar13 //  Oliver’s biology leads to strange new changes for the team. || I love this one so much. It’s so different and it’s honestly such a lovely continuation of the original story. so much fun.
my love must be a kind of blind love by @artemisodinson //  Felicity Smoak, a mostly blind weapon designer of a Medieval-eque world, was simply the personal designer of the House of Queen. Until Lord Oliver Queen himself strolled into her workshop. || Blind!Felicity + midieval setting + vigilantism and olicity = yes yes and more yes. It’s awesome.
hold my hand (consign me not to darkness) by @overwatchandarrow // When Oliver Queen returns for his final year at Hogwarts with the mysterious death of his father hanging over his head, he doesn’t expect much to change. But when he meets Felicity Smoak, a brilliant force of nature with her own mysteries, everything does. As they fall in love and delve deep into the secrets of Hogwarts, they uncover many truths about themselves and the darkness within the magical world.Nothing will ever be the same. || harry potter au!!!! it’s good, there’s angst, and wtf it’s harry potter. go read [shoos you towards it]
Tastes like Pure Joy by @wherethereissmoak //  Felicity almost has her school paid off - and her last night as a live-donor at a vampire restaurant will settle her debt. But her encounter with client Oliver Queen was anything but the quick and easy feed either of them was expecting. || The easiest way to win Bev over is vampires and/or werewolves. And this is like fluffy adorable vampires, which you don’t see very often.
continues under the cut
Smutty smut smut:
carpe diem by @bisexuallaurellance //  “Oliver Jonas Queen,” she says softly, and if it wasn’t for the rapturous look in her eyes he would have thought he was in trouble. But nothing, nothing could possibly prepare him for what she says next. “Would you make me… the happiest woman on the face of the earth?” || Fluff and smut? Always a good combination. This is the kind that makes you feel all kinds of gooey while also sending you off for a cold shower.
Balinese Dreams by @queensoverwatch //  The origin of Oliver’s and Felicity’s love affair with ‘dessert’. || You can never go wrong with Bali and olicity smut. You just can’t. And this is perfect.
Suspenders and Stripping to Power Ballads by @imusuallyobsessed // After the mayoral event, Oliver and Felicity finish what they started in the closet. And Oliver fulfills his promise to make her forget about Channing Tatum. Olicity Hiatus Fic-A-Thon week 3 prompt: taste. || everything about this fic is absolutely swoon worthy. Suspenders, check. Stripping, check. Sexy smut, check. And an ending that’ll give you heart eyes. Yep.
Angst fest:
The Road to Recovery by @blackcanarydinah // At 19, Felicity Smoak accepts a dare from her college buddies that turns out to be the worst decision she could have made and it twists her life in ways she never thought possible. At 22, Oliver Queen gets on the Queen’s Gambit with his father and nearly drowns in the North China Sea. In the months to come he often wishes that he did. At 21, Felicity sells her soul to the Devil to save her husband. At 27, Oliver returns home, haunted by the ghost of his wife. || if you can’t tell by the summary this story will hurt you in ways that you can’t even imagine, but it will be a good hurt. In other words, you’re going to suffer, but you’re going to be happy about it.
The Donor by @spaztronautwriter //  Felicity Smoak has always dreamed of being a mother and she isn’t going to let a little thing like men stop her from making that dream come true. Having a baby by herself might just be biting off a little more than she can chew, but one way or the other it’s about to change her whole life. || Okay so I guess this is technically not the angstiest fic out there, but it stresses me the fuck o u t. It will have you screaming at your phone telling these idiots to get together and there’s only three chapters so far.
(our constant truth) we will never fade by @bokayjunkie //  Felicity encounters a mysterious stranger in her home except… he’s not so much of a stranger to her at all. In fact she knows him very well, but he is still ever bit as mysterious. || This fic wounded me…. WOUNDED ME, time traveling oliver queen from the future completely in love with felicity meets a felicity completely and utterly confused by her oliver. Nope. My heart hurts enough as it is.
Now go, read, and comment. And review and post your own recs! Show your favorite writers some love because they sure as hell deserve it!!

Thanks to the lovely @wakandasoldier for taking the time to answer these! Get to know more about lovely T, go give her a follow and then show her some love!
These questions are from this list. You should check it out, there’s 50 questions all together and they’d be great to ask your favorite fic writer!
1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan-fiction?
I've loved writing since I was old enough to string sentences together and have it make sense, but the fanfiction part for me didn't start until I was maybe 9 or 10. It's been a long time since then and I only wrote for my personal enjoyment, but I didn't start posting anything on Tumblr until I just did it one day after years of keeping my hobby locked away--on this same blog, believe it or not, and I haven't gone back since.
2) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.
As a Reader-Insert writer, the answer might seem obvious but I've always loved conjuring my own characters and bringing them to life in the wake of a new world and I have worked on a few of my own original stories but recently I've been attached to a certain one, so I love a good OC as much as Reader-Insert.
3) What is your favorite genre to write for?
I love a nice mix of romance and adventure. A story with an intense plot that keeps a reader on their toes as well as having characters fall in love along the way? Sign me up, man.
4) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?
The fic I wrote that I am not fond of is also one that became very popular. I honestly think it was poorly written on my part and I would not mind if it disappeared. It's my one-shot called A Hairy Situation.
5) When is your preferred time to write?
I have a hard time focusing at any time of day, but once night rolls around I find it a lot more peaceful and easier to write.
6) Where do you take your inspiration from?
I take inspiration from where I can get it. Sometimes a song will inspire me for a character, maybe a book I've read, and sometimes other writers!
7) What’s your favorite scene that you’ve written?
I was torn for this one because I love the scene in Before The King where Reader and Steve bust into the deli owner's house and have to squeeze into a tiny bathroom to reach the fire escape, but Steve finds the gun Reader has and wants to give her sh*t for it but can't since Bucky needs backup so he's just like: "We'll talk about this later." And the other scene is in Waters of Chaos in the dreamscape with Reader and Erik where she wants to know who and what he is because he mentions he's immortal and then Erik summons a sandstorm to be extra and reveals he's Horus in all his glory, and the mental image of that man wrapped in gold is truly something. So, it's a tie between Steve having to shut down his dad-mode and Erik being an Egyptian God.
8) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?
I haven't received criticisms for my works, but I have gone through and realized there was a few typos or a missing word from a sentence. I'm always open to criticism and feedback, though.
9) Who is your favorite character to write for? Why?
I really favor Bucky and Steve since they were the characters I initially latched on to and also grew with as a writer. The more I got a feel for the characters themselves and developed my skill, the more I came to love them. Although, T'Challa is always an honor to write for.
10) Who is your least favorite character to write for? Why?
I think my least favorite character is Vision--writing-wise-- since I find it impossible to figure out his character and personality, but I don't mind writing any other character.
11) How do you come up with the titles for your stories?
Okay, so titles have always just been easy for me and sometimes I've thought of a title and formed the whole story around it.
12) What do you think is the best idea you’ve had for a story so far?
I love the medieval/fantasy genre and story idea for When Winter Came, but also I've been waiting to do an Egyptian Gods AU for the longest time and finally I had the chance to write it, i.e. Waters of Chaos.
13) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?
Yes, I have plenty of things I've abandoned that I just lost inspiration for. There was one series I had that I stopped writing because the person who requested it was going around to other authors and demanding the same plot and that it be a multi-part fic, so I immediately stopped writing for the series because it not only irritated me, but seemed to be bound to cause problems.
14) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?
I wrote a one-shot as a birthday present for a friend of mine that I can't remember the title of, but it was short and sweet with Bucky showing up injured on Reader's doorstep and she patches him up in her bathroom so I would like to continue it one day.
15) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?
I actually don't! At least.. I think I don't, but nothing comes to mind so I'm satisfied with the endings I've dished out.
16) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?
I could go on and on about some of the wonderful writers who've become good friends of mine on this website, but I have made a few posts recommending quite a few of the writers in the Marvel community that I admire. I greatly admire a few authors as well and I recently read the entire Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas, so she's become a favorite and then there's been a few others that I can't remember the names of.
17) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?
I take the time some days to read through what I've posted and it kind of amazes me how far I've come since I first started posting, but I can't help but cringe at it a bit.
18) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?
It's impossible for me to write without music and the way it drowns out all other noise around me helps me focus more than silence does. I'm more used to tuning out music, so I not only can get inspiration with songs but write at the same time.
19) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?
I haven't cried while writing anything, but I feel that is partly because I already know where I am taking the fic and it kind of ruins it for myself.
20) Which part of your fics have been the hardest to write?
I have a really hard time writing characters crying and struggling with loss because you have to understand a character enough to know the ways they deal with showing raw emotion and how they cope in mourning. I've always had a difficult time showing that.
21) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?
In all honesty, if I would outline my stories I probably would have an easier time keeping up with everything and being able to see my fics through all the way, but I write as it comes to me so a girl can dream!
22) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fan-fiction?
If I were to look back and be able to tell myself one thing, it would be that I should be confident in whatever I write because that sh*t is hard to do and whether it's a one-shot or a series I should never lose faith in doing something I love.
23) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?
I feel like When Winter Came is a bit of an underdog compared to Before The King, but there isn't as many parts to the Medieval AU so I think I can understand the difference.
24) In contrast to 23 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?
In all honesty, I am pretty happy with the fics that got popular. My writing has gotten decent attention so I'm not complaining.
25) Are any of your characters based on real people?
Technically, yes? All the characters are the Marvel characters and they look like the actors who play them.
26) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?
I am eternally grateful for any compliment I receive! I love every comment I get on a story and can't chose a favorite.
27) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?
I've also been lucky to have not received any harsh criticisms on my work, but I have gotten input from other writers on certain works before I post them.
28) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?
I have always been the type to keep fic ideas pretty private until I'm almost finished, but with my series I have always been open about them.
29) Do people know you write fan-fiction?
No, not very many people do know that I write fanfiction. I believe the only person is my best friend and she's always been supportive about it.
30) What’s you favorite minor character you’ve written?
I have always appreciated writing Sam Wilson as a "minor" character in Before The King. He comes naturally in the story and I'm pretty confident in my characterization of him.
31) What spurs you on during the writing process?
I think it's just my level of focus and how much of the story I have in my head. If I can have 80% of the plot points figured out, then I can get it done. It also depends on how excited I am to bring the story to life, as well.
32) What’s your favorite trope to write?
My favorite trope is a tie between a nice enemies to lovers fic or a slow-burn fic. Nothing is better than two characters pining after each other for long period of time and dragging the readers through an intriguing story that has two characters admitting they love each other at a perilous time.
33) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
I honestly have no idea what I first read as a fanfic, but I did go through a One Direction phase so I was reading a lot of fanfiction during that time. After that I really got sucked into Marvel and I haven't gone back since.
34) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
I write more angst than anything else, so the answer is a bit obvious. The reason of choosing it is because smut is always a selective reading choice and a lot of people appreciate fluff, but I feel as though angst is what engages a reader entirely into the story and brings them completely into a character's shoes. As a reader myself, at times, I am more immersed when the story is mostly angst and find myself feeling more emotion than I do to other genres of fanfiction.

In Defense of Fanfiction: A rebuttal to the belief that Chronicles of Narnia is “not fanfiction”
It has come to my attention that an individual (@crnkl, sorry if Tumblr can’t identify the name because there are so many crnkls) thinks my post “In Defense of Fanfiction” is a, in their words, a “load of shite.” They go on to say that “most of those examples aren’t the same as creating new situations for existing intellectual property—the Chronicles of Narnia and other CS Lewis works use biblical themes and character inspirations, but they’re not ‘biblical fanfiction.’”
I invite crnk or others of the same opinion to defend their belief using sources beyond their opinion. In general, it seems that we are operating under different definitions for the word “fanfiction” itself.
Consider the following definitions of “fanfiction” from various sources:
·        Oxford Dictionary: fiction written by a fan of, and featuring characters from, a particular TV series, movie, etc.
·        Dictionary.com: a fictional account written by a fan of a show, movie, book, or video game to explore themes and ideas that will not or cannot be explored via the originating medium; also written fan fiction, also called fanfic
·        From Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged (2014): (Literary & Literary Critical Terms) fiction written around previously established characters invented by other authors
As we can see, the definition and very characteristics of “what is fanfiction” are slippery to some extent. However, all of these definitions suggest that fanfiction is a derivative work that intentionally borrows elements (especially with regards to character and setting) to further expand upon a pre-existing medium. A recent survey in 2017, “Towards a Definition of Fanfiction,” shows that 88% of responders agree with fanfiction being a derivative work of an original one. (In general, that survey’s an interesting read for many reasons!)
Now, let us apply these definitions to my list. Despite the many examples I provided, I see that crnkl focuses solely on C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia as not being a valid form of fanfiction. I hope that they will consider the following pieces of evidence to support my argument that it aligns with the definition of fanfiction.
C.S. Lewis himself admits the Narnia series is a derivative of the biblical story. Before his death, he wrote in a letter, “I asked myself ‘Supposing that there really was a world like Narnia and supposing it had (like our world) gone wrong and supposing Christ wanted to go into that world and save it (as He did ours), what might have happened?’ The stories are my answers. Since Narnia is a world of Talking Beasts, I thought He would become a Talking Beast there, as He became a man here. I pictured Him becoming a lion there because (a) the lion is supposed to be the king of beasts; (b) Christ is called ‘The Lion of Judah’ in the Bible; (c) I’d been having strange dreams about lions when I began writing the work. The whole series works out like this.
·        The Magician’s Nephew tells the Creation and how evil entered Narnia.
·        The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Crucifixion and Resurrection.
·        Prince Caspian, restoration of the true religion after corruption.
·        The Horse and His Boy, the calling and conversion of a heathen.
·        The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the spiritual life (especially in Reepicheep).
·        The Silver Chair, the continuing war with the powers of darkness.
·        The Last Battle, the coming of the Antichrist (the Ape), the end of the world and the Last Judgment.”**
(The source for this letter is Narnia Beckons and “Bluspels and Flalansferes: A Semantic Nightmare,” in Selected Literary Essays, Walter Hooper, ed. (London: Cambridge University Press, 1969), 426. Retrieved from: http://www1.cbn.com/books/deeper-truth-behind-chronicles-narnia)
As we can see here, Lewis himself strongly pulled the exact plot and progression of biblical stories, and even descriptions of biblical characters, to flesh out his own plot and characters. He basically wrote an “Alternate Universe” fanfiction of the story of Jesus Christ (a “what if” scenario where the same character is in a different situation/setting).
As noted by teachers/professors Kelly Bahoric and Elizabeth Swaggerty, Authors of fanfiction do not simply follow the “blueprint” of the original work; rather, they incorporate elements of canon, such as plot, setting, and characters, and use these elements as a way to create new stories that extend upon the existing universe (Black, 2009b; Thomas, 2006).” In addition, they note, “Fanfiction with elements from multiple source materials can be more aptly called alternate universe fic, or AU fic. AU fic takes the characters from a particular work and places them in a different time and/or setting.”
This is entirely what C.S. Lewis has done with the biblical character of Jesus Christ, as well as with several other Narnia characters that parallel the behaviors of biblical characters, including even biblical and various mythological references to talking/anthropomorphized animals. Critic Austin Cline, in his article “C.S. Lewis and Christian Allegory,” goes into further detail about many biblical parallels (article in the Sources section of this post). However, he also notes, “The problem is, Lewis either wasn’t capable of or didn’t think highly of subtlety. The Christian allusions in the books come on fast and strong, with little apparent effort to construct a story that might exist independently of the religious references.”  (Emphasis mine.)
Regarding the setting of Narnia itself—Lewis took the name of “Narnia” from a real city in Italy (now called Narni), which was known as Narnia during medieval times (Brockhaus). He therefore did not create the name himself, nor is it a surprise that Narnia is full of medieval-style culture, hierarchy, and clothing, given the medieval history of the real city. Various features of the city and its roads also appear in the setting of the fantasy world Narnia, with a statement  from Lewis’s personal secretary, Walter Hooper, that Lewis made these connections intentionally after being gifted an old Latin atlas that included the city of Narnia (Brockhaus).
But what about other more “original” factors in the books, like the adorable character of Lucy who does not have quite the biblical overtones of say, Peter or Edmund (who acts like Judas)? C.S. Lewis was inspired by one of the inhabitants of the real town of Narni—Lucy Brocadelli of Narni, who was known as a very religious child and deeply in tune with the spiritual (Brockhaus). Lucy Pevensie is little more than a fanfiction of that very saint.
All of this is to say that typically, the more “original” a story sounds, the more hidden or unknown its inspirations are. C.S. Lewis directly lifted a wide variety of pre-existing material, both in setting and with characters, to create the hodgepodge that became Chronicles of Narnia.
For all of the above reasons, Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series therefore qualifies as derivative work, or fanfiction. Although I might perhaps revise my statement that it is biblical fanfiction--it is that as well as a curious nod to other forms of fanfiction (including real person fanfiction).

My current obsession right now, every time it’s being updated my day is made! ^p^ Originally they both were engaged to different people, but the end game is still lawlu. Delicious dramas abound! The writers also have another fanfic worth checking out too, it’s really really dark though so beware, but the fic was sooo goood. Ongoing.
My Little Husband by Paulie MickeyJ
Arranged marriage AU set in modern times. I’ve gotta say, the content and the writing style of this fanfic may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the fic has certain charm that’ll make you curious to follow through until the ending. Many fluff moments in it it’ll rot your teeth away! Completed.
Umbrella by LunaSkye23
Arranged marriage AU set in modern times. Law is younger in this one, but there are also many sweet and fluff moments between those two it’ll make an entertaining read! ^ ^ It’s been a long time since last update though, so proceed with caution. Ongoing (on hiatus?)
My Husband is A Hurricane by @xaidrawsandwrites
