WHY DOES JEAN SAY "SHITKID" - a language theory
Ahh, I saw a post on tumblr here asking why Jean uses "shitkid" as an insult, and I forgot to respond, here is my theory:
English swears in most in sexual manners, "fuck" being the main one, French in scatological manners, "merde" being the big one.
Thus, French uses "de merde" (-of shit) as emphasis, like English uses "fucking", i.e.: "putain de merde" (fucking asshole), "truc de merde" (fucking thing that isn't working), "peur de merde" (fucking scared)
"shit" (noun) is just his native language way of using emphasis.
So he is calling Harry a "fucking child", putting emphasis on his tantrums, misbehaviour, immaturity, etc. As people can switch back to their native language when getting emotional, his native "gosse de merde/petit merdeux" probably became "shitkid", and it stuck, that is my theory.
I quickly checked what his real French insult is, and it is "clown de service" (service/professional clown). Again, stressing Harry's unacceptable behaviour *at work*. "Clown" definitely goes harder in the French language as an insult, stressing the unprofessional conduct.
So we have both French with "professional clown" and German with "jelly head" as localisations for "shitkid", and I really like both of them, they fit their respective languages really well! And the English one gives him a unique insult that loops back to the structure of his native language! :D

My random comic Recs #1
I've been reading more comics lately, so I wanted to share my love for them in the hopes that someone might give this medium a chance!
Note: I am not a fan of superhero comics, because I simply don't like that genre, so don't expect superheroes below. Gonna make these posts every now and then and they will always include 4 recs.
1.) The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
Death got demoted and sent to earth as a mortal! Some boy is going to figure out how to cheat death in the future, and our girl Death really doesn't appreciate that.
The entire graphic novel is only 5 issues long, so it's VERY digestible and easy to get through. There is something so light and playful about the art style, and the vibrant colors really sell it.
For people that are completely new to comics as a medium, I imagine that this is actually an A+ book to start with for the reasons I just mentioned. The way paneling and the flow of time is done in here, is a great example as to why comics are so unique as a medium and why they should be looked at as its own art from, separate from movies or books.
2) Mécanique Céleste (Or "Mechanica Calaestium" in the German translation, or "Aster Of Pan" in the English translation)
An absolutely breathtaking French comic. Aster lives in Pan, a post-apocalyptic France where she scavenges for wreckage with her friend Wallis. After their people come under a threat by the Federation of Fortuna, they are given a choice —submit to Fortuna’s rule or beat them in a weird Hunger Games-esque version of Dodge, called “Celestial Mechanics”.
The detailed art pieces in each panel, the careful line work, the lively way the characters move and the stunning watercolors captivated me from the first page. This graphic novel (now 2 volumes) is one of a kind and truly unique!
3) Something Is Killing the Children
Note: Comic contains a lot of gore and violence!
Children are starting to disappear in Archer's Peak. The ones that come back tell impossible stories that no one seems to believe. Only one stranger trusts these tales - a mysterious girl named Erica Slaughter who seems to be able to see these creatures too. And she's here for business.
I loooove Something is Killing the Children. I haven't finished reading the ongoing volumes yet, but I am super fascinated at how well the pacing goes in this story. The rough art style with Erica's freaky large eyes is SO fun, and you start appreciating it even more the longer you read.
4) Mon Ami Pierrot ("Mein Freund Pierrot" in German, "My friend Pierrot" in English)
Another fabulous French comic! Cléa is to marry soon - a young man name of Berthier. Right before the wedding she meets the fascinating magician Pierrot though, who completely changes the course of her life. Entranced by his whimsical nature that makes her feel "free" for the first time in her life, she follows him and leaves her previous life behind. During her stay with Pierrot, questions arise, though. Who is he really? All the while her betrothed sets out to find her again.
The Ghibli influence both art- and storywise is easy to make out, and I personally really enjoyed that. I particularly love the colors and the facial expressions the characters are drawn with. Everything feels very whimsical and playful and I had a good time going through this chonker of a graphic novel!
No spoilers, but I expected toothrottingly-sweet wholesome stuff, and ended up surprised on several occasions. I think the colours and art style really help give those moments wham, because you don't expect it.

So.
Werewolf 5th Edition.
Werewolf 5th edition sucks. A lot.
Edit-
I made some errors in my initial edit of this post that were fuelled entirely by being underinformed and almost insensible with anger, disappointment, and anxiety.
Some very informative responses have been made that I intend to incorporate into a much better and less rambling post with those updates and corrections. I'll probably delete this one soon as I type that one together, so folks only see the updated version.
Sorry for any mistakes I made on this old version, again, I was in an extremely poor place mentally and thoroughly dispirited by the total butchering of what was supposed to be a less shitty and mean-spirited version of a setting I care deeply for despite its foundational flaws and 30+ year history of exactly this thing happening.
I'm still very, very angry. But it's important to be angry and correct.
This post was not made by someone informed of all the facts, and I intend to correct that.
Paradox Interactive has made the brave decision to reboot the controversial Werewolf the Apocalypse setting entirely rather than try and fix it, and have somehow done a worse job than the games studio that released an RPG book titled an ethnic slur.
It's taken me almost a month since this came out to be anywhere near mentally prepared enough to even collect my thoughts on it.
Man, it is rare to see an edition of ANYTHING that pisses off old players, new players, players who want to keep the lore the same, players who want to change the lore, conservative players, radical players, and even powergamers.
How do you set out with the intention of making an infamously dated and poorly researched/outreached setting LESS uncomfortable and racist from a modern perspective.... and end up with something EVEN MORE racist and uncomfortable, but also suffocatingly tonedeaf, insincere, and deeply sinister and corporate in its erasure of existing issues rather than addressing them whatsoever.
We made the Get of Fenris irredeemably evil because some of them in the past were nazis and also nazis like Germanic mythology, so the viking werewolves are all nazis now.
Okay, I understand why you did that from a modern political perspective even if its kind of heavy hand-
The Native American werewolf tribes have been removed entirely and replaced with American Murican werewolf tribes. Renaming and rewriting them to be more respectful was just too much work! Now they're more inclusive. :)
The Irish werewolf tribe is now the Nature Werewolves tribe, like every other tribe of Werewolves also is, but also stripped completely of celtic origins.
The Red Talons are openly genocidal ecofascist malthusians and somehow NOT IRREDEEMABLY EVIL like the Get of Fenris are.
Also the feminist all women werewolves are no longer all women or even feminist. AND ALSO SOME OF THEM ARE SOCIAL DARWINISTS AND THATS SUPPOSED TO BE A GOOD THING!?!
Also we entirely dropped the themes about how forcing children to be a part of a war they barely understand while also lying to them about the crimes their ancestors committed that led to the current crisis is fucked up and evil.
Now its actually awesome to be a child soldier born into a repressive apocalyptic death cult with a siege mentality and everything is cool about that actually, you're the Good Guys, and no amount of covered-up historic genocides or internal/external bigotry will ever change that! :)
Also we solved the way people were uncomfortable with the idea that werewolf society is transitioning messily from being horrible ableist assholes that discriminated for centuries against those they view as deformed, disabled, or sexual deviants to new generations that don't care about that stuff, by removing disabled werewolves entirely! Problem solved! No more discomfort or moral conundrums! We are the liberal-est!
There's just something so unbelievably fucked up and suspicious about erasing entire minorities from a fictional universe because they were handled poorly in the first edition, rather than talking to writers and outreach specialists FROM the real world equivalents to those minorities to try and rewrite them.
Don't worry, we removed the group the setting was bigoted against! Problem solved! Just remove the minority!
I've written my own post on why the Metis/Crinos-born should be renamed and probably rewritten, but as a severely disabled individual with multiple hereditary disabilities that severely impact my QoL, outright removing disabled characters in a work of fiction because the prejudice other characters showed them in-universe made people uncomfortable makes me want to tear out someone's throat with my teeth.
Sure, completely remove my ability to play disabled a character fighting back against prejudice and bigotry, rather than rewrite the most uncomfortable aspects of YOUR FUCKING PORTRAYAL OF THOSE CHARACTERS to make it more clear who the sympathetic one is supposed to be.
It's just so unbelievably cowardly and whinging and wretched.
So fuck it, I guess!
Fuck the deeply applicable themes of being born into a well-intentioned but deeply flawed and bigoted society, and trying to create the better world your parents always told you your ancestors fought for, while dealing with the fact that your world is built on mass graves those ancestors helped fill.
Fuck a game that deals with intergenerational trauma and the ethical hellscape that is a highly religious society devoted to the very same ideals it often violates just to win fights against the enemies it created through its own arrogance and prejudice.
Fuck a game that lets you play someone born different, born strange and sickly, bouncing constantly between people who pity you and people who view you as subhuman, before finally finding the people, the family who love and accept and fight alongside you for a world that has never accepted you, but WILL FUCKING KNOW YOUR NAME.
That's not relevant to the real world at all!
There are no kids born in deeply flawed and hypocritical societies, who grew up on stories of the glorious future their society would create, forced then to reconcile the hopeful dreams of a better world with the comprehensive list of horrific things done in the name of that future.
There are no children born confused and alone in their navigation of the maze that is past atrocities, ethnic conflicts, religious prejudice and dogma, or modern propaganda attempting to erase the histories of all of those things.
There are no disabled teens who spent their lives believing they didn't belong in the world, kept going only by the connections they forged with other outsiders and people who fought back against the kind of wretched bigotry that suffocates children to death, who found homes and families they could trust outside the pissant communities they were born into.
Apparently those people don't need a game! They don't need to explore those feelings!
Just throw some more nazis in, so we can pretend we care about social issues or understand the redeeming threads of a deeply flawed gameline, ostensibly so we market it to leftist youngsters, but while we also erase the entire point of a game WHICH IS ALL ABOUT BEING PUNKASS YOUNGSTERS DESPERATELY TRYING TO FIND THE REDEEMING THREADS OF A DEEPLY FLAWED AND PREJUDICED SOCIETY THAT CONSTRAINS THEM, FINDING A WAY TO REBEL AGAINST BOTH THE EVILS OF THE RACIST BASTARDS WHO RAISED THEM AND THE POMPOUS SHITHEADS WHO WANT TO DESTROY THE WORLD OUT OF GREED.
No! We want a squeaky clean, sterile white game that AmericanTM parents can be proud of their kids for playing! A marketable game, that advertisers will gladly pay Revenue to put their products in! Play the good guys, everyone! You're the good guys! Be a big werewolf UwU!
Don't worry about historical atrocities or the flaws of the society that raised you! That's Pentex propaganda!
Fighting bad guys means you can't do anything bad yourself!
The Emperor told me so!
Deus Gaia Vult!
A hollow, performative, offensive jizzstain that should've been scrapped in its crib. I have no idea how this edition got past a quality assurance team.
Hell I have no idea how it got past a legal team, given the number of real peoples' likenesses they used without permission.
Devoid of artistic integrity or merit.

German Dark Knight quests
This is an English translation of the German script for the level 45 and 50 dark knight quests (and some extra bits at the end), meant as a supplement to the translation of the Japanese script found in this and this post showcasing the large differences between Japanese and English Fray’s characterisation. Since haillenarte mentioned in their posts that the German script usually stays closer to the Japanese script than the English script does, and I can’t read Japanese but can read German, I decided to check out the German version and translate it for comparison.
UPDATE: Please check out my translation website! I have the entire dark knight questline translated on there, including an updated translation of what’s in this post, as well as many other scenes from the rest of the game.
Since the English script is already in the other posts I won’t put it in here too, but I will separate it into the same blocks as the other posts for ease of comparison. I’m also sticking to gender neutral pronouns for the WoL, though German is a highly gendered language so all the screenshots of the German script will reflect me playing as a male au ra. It’s been a hot minute since I formally studied German so if you spot any glaring mistakes by all means correct me!
Level 45 quest - What must be said
Fray: It’s your life and it ends again every minute... I’ve been thinking again about what you told me about the voice.
Fray: Someone is trying to get through to you. Someone who needs your protection. But we don’t know any more.
Fray: We have to perform another ritual as soon as possible. Maybe that will give us a clue about who the voice belongs to.
Fray: After all, the voice resonates within your heart. Do you have someone you want to protect? More than anyone else?
Fray: ...Sorry. I don’t feel very well lately... I’m alright. I’m just a bit tired.
Fray: So, when you’re ready, we’ll perform the next ritual.
Fray: Show me what you’ve learned. I’ll wait for you at Moraby Drydocks.
Fray: Do you remember? The sea...
Fray: I told you before that I went on a journey once. With someone who... A terrible danger awaited us at sea.
Fray: I wanted to stop them. But we’d already drifted too far apart. There was no stopping them from getting on that damn boat.
Fray: It was like I was dying. They were the person I wanted to protect more than anything in the world. But my words didn't get through to them. That's why I'm...
???: What’s that? Isn’t the Maelstrom there to help us? ...I’m in need, goddammit!
Styrnlona: The Maelstrom isn’t responsible for that. You should turn to the Yellowjackets when reporting something like stolen wares.
Demanding dealer: The Yellowjackets... Before they get around to my case my newborn son will be an experienced sailor! Perhaps even admiral!
Styrnlona: Hey, you! Aren’t you [your rank at the Maelstrom] [Name]?
Strynlona: You did us all a great favour when you defeated the primal Leviathan. The citizens of Limsa Lominsa are forever grateful.
Demanding dealer: Whaaaat? There’s a real hero standing before me!
Demanding dealer: You’re a godsend. I’m in a real bind and need help.
Demanding dealer: A nasty Qiqirn has stolen all my wares! [cry] What do I tell my clients? [sob] I’m going to lose my good name as trader! [sniff]
Fray: Do you remember what I told you last time? You can’t help everyone. You can’t carry all the world’s suffering on your shoulders.
Fray: The Yellowjackets will take on his case soon enough. You should worry about your training as a dark knight instead and find a worthy opponent. There’s more important things at stake...
Demanding dealer: Don’t leave me high and dry! If you don’t help me, no-one will!
>Yes, or nobody will help him.
Demanding dealer: You’re truly a hero! Thank you!
Demanding dealer: The Qiqirn that stole my wares has to be some kind of leader or chief... It’s bigger and stronger than the others.
>No, I can’t help everyone.
Demanding dealer: But... didn’t you just say you were looking for worthy opponents?
Demanding dealer: The Qiqirn that stole my wares is a real big guy! Bigger and stronger than the others. A leader or chief, I would say.
Demanding dealer: I saw it walking towards the salt strand, the Qiqirn have a camp there. Please bring my wares back!
Fray: It always ends like this... When nobody wants to help, the heroes have to go... You'll never become a dark knight like this.
Fray: Cut that thieving Qiqirn down to size. Doesn’t matter how pathetically it begs for mercy. It shouldn’t have stolen the merchant’s wares...
Fray: We’ll use the opportunity to prepare the next ritual. Show me everything you’ve learned as a dark knight.
[Duty battle dialogue]
Fray the Dark: There’s quite a lot of them... This’ll be a right bloodbath.
Fray the Dark: Now we just need to get the wares!
Fray the Dark: The wares are definitely in this chest...
Fray: We... have the wares... [groan]
Bring them to the merchant... [huff]
Fray: Me? I’m just a bit... exhausted... [groan].
Go ahead, I’ll be right behind you...
Fray: Bring it to an end...
Demanding dealer: Hello, hero! Do you have my wares?
Demanding dealer: Yes, that’s the stuff! Thank you, thank you. Let’s see if everything is there.
Demanding dealer: Nooooo! In llymlaen’s name, I can’t sell these like this!
Demanding dealer: Those Qiqirn put their dirty hands all over everything! I can’t offer this to my customers! Or even worse, they’ll demand a discount!
Demanding dealer: What should i do? It’s the end for me! I’m ruined! I can say goodbye to that vacation in Costa del Sol...
Demanding dealer: I know! I’ve got a hero standing right in front of me! You’ll deliver me new wares in a snap!
Demanding dealer: The skin of a dangerous monster... A treasure from a trap-filled ruin... A lock of hair from a primal...
Fray: ENOUGH!!
Fray: Does it ever end? Is Eorzea populated entirely by children? Can nobody do anything on their own anymore? Does everyone have to keep begging the heroes for help?
Fray: [Name] is also just a [your race]! With their own feelings and interests. Axe blades and thunder magic also hurt them! Nobody thinks about that, huh?
Fray: We keep fighting for other people... Like back then, at open sea, against that watery primal...
Fray: “We’re not chosen! Let the chosen one fight!” - Pah, you’re just hiding behind those words! What are you doing for Eorzea anyway?
Fray: If you lot didn’t keep bringing in your troublesome business [Name] would’ve long since been a more experienced dark knight! Ugh, for real!
Demanding dealer: Who just blows their lid like that? I’m terribly sorry, adventurer...
Styrnlona: What the... [Maelstrom rank] [Name], your anger isn’t entirely unfounded, but...
Styrnlona: ...A short walk sounds like the right thing to cool your head. Have a good day.
Fray: That just had to be said. Don’t you think?
Fray: Seriously, such an ungrateful lot...
>All that matters is the voice.
Fray: Right, the voice. You can’t ignore it. That would mean ignoring your own existence.
Fray: I even know who the voice belongs to...
Fray: But I can’t tell you who it is. You have to find out yourself.
Fray: Well, let’s continue. Stick your hand out...
>I want to become a real dark knight as soon as possible.
Fray: You’re already a real dark knight, [Name]. The dark power, that’s real.
Fray: But remember what I told you in the Brume? That you have to face your feelings if you want to walk the path of the dark knight - if you want to survive it?
Fray: You’re not at the goal yet. There’s a place in your heart you still haven’t reached. But the voice will help you with that.
Fray: Well, let’s continue. Stick your hand out...
>You’re completely right. It had to be said.
[Fray makes a surprised gesture]
Fray: You also think I’m right? That’s great, [Name]!
Fray: I know it’s not in your nature to lash out like that. But you can rest easy leaving that to me.
Fray: I’m glad you’re finally realizing it...
Fray: More important right now is that you find out who the voice belongs to. And what its true meaning is. Stick your hand out...
???: The weak call for you, [Name]. As they always do.
???: They call, they scream, they wail... So loud that you can’t hear your own voice...
The pain... The anger... The sadness... Nobody wants to hear about those.
???: But you. You will listen to it.
???: You hear my prayers.
Fray: [Name].
Fray: You heard the voice, right?
Fray: You don’t have to tell me what you heard. But I’ll ask you one thing: Are you prepared to give up everything to answer that voice?
Fray: Your status, your fame, your fortune - everything? Only after losing everything will we have the freedom to do everything. If you’re willing to do that, then... come with me! Leave this Eorzea!
Fray: Here you will never be able to fulfil your purpose. To be truly free. Here you will forever have to concern yourself with others. But if you turn your back on Eorzea - you can go your own way.
Fray: You don’t have to answer right now. Meet me at the usual place when you’re ready. I’ll wait for you.
Level 50 quest - The knights’ core
Fray: [Name]... There you are again. I was already expecting you.
Fray: ...Ugh... We don't have much time left. We have to travel again soon... Or it'll be too late.
Fray: Too late for you... You don't understand it yet, but I want to help you. I'm starting to doubt whether you're really prepared... But we'll see.
Fray: We'll meet at the Gates of Judgement. Call my name and I'll come.
???: That voice! Isn't that [Sir/Lady] [Name]? The hero of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn?
Brave knight: Forgive me. I belong to Lord Drillemont's troops from Whitebrim Fort. Everyone in my regiment knows your name.
Brave knight: It can't be a coincidence that I meet you here. It's the Fury's work! She wants you to help us.
Nervous knight: A bit to the south from here lives a crowd of Gigas. They've been showing themselves in the region increasingly often and frequently raid caravans. It’s likely they intend to expand their territory.
Nervous knight: The troops at Whitebrim Fort are well armed, but the Gigas are numerous and better suited to the cold than us.
Nervous knight: They're better organised than other Gigas too. If we can disable their commander their advances will likely cease for now.
Brave knight: Indeed. Our commander underestimates the danger and refuses to send troops. Please, won't you help us and hunt down the Gigas commander? Coeus the Loudmouthed, they call the beast. Then our problems will be solved.
Durendaire knights: Please help us.
Durendaire knights: What could be more important? Please help us!
Nervous knight: Thank you! You’re a hero!
Brave knight: We believe we have a trail. Follow us!
Fray: That’s enough.... That’s.... ENOUGH!!!
Brave knight: That’s the place. We believe Coeus the Loudmouthed will come through the pass. Did I mention he’s always accompanied by his two bodyguards? They of course also have to be defeated.
Brave knight: Keep watch a little further down the pass. The leader of the Gigas won’t be long. May the Fury preserve you!
Brave knight: You’ve defeated the Gigas’ leader! Thank Halone and you!
Brave knight: That should stop their advance. We can easily deal with the few remaining unorganised Gigas. And if not, we know who we can ask.
Brave knight: You have our thanks. We will inform Lord Drillemont of your deeds.
Brave knight: And our comrades will hear of your heroic deeds too! They’ll all look up to you, if they don’t already.
Brave knight: The troops at Whitebrim Fort can use any boost to morale they can get. Your willingness to help us will bring new courage.
Brave knight: That reminds me... Could you perhaps autograph my shield? My name is...
???: March, march! Return to base immediately!
Brave knight: What happened? Why the rush?
Capable knight: Orders from above. Lord Drillemont heard that we’re working with [Name] and ordered us to return immediately. With them in custody, in fact.
Brave knight: In custody? What’s the meaning of this?
Capable knight: There have been... accusations. People are saying they’ve been spotted in the Brume... speaking with the corpse of a convicted heretic.
Capable knight: I don’t believe it of course, but we both know how serious such accusations are.
Brave knight: Surely someone is trying to play us for fools... I mean, speaking with a corpse? Do they take us for idiots?
Capable knight: Have you heard the accusations, [Sir/Lady]? They... have a certain weight, since they come from Temple Knights.
Capable knight: It might be necessary... Ah, purely as a formality of course... To ask you to remove your weapon.
Fray: Ha, ha! “Remove my weapon”? After what happened in Ul’dah? Are they out of their minds?
Fray: Tomorrow will be the best day in your life, [Name]. Your breakfast will taste better than any meal you’ve ever had.
Fray: That is, when you finally manage to look the truth in the eye. [Name], get ready for the evacuation of your soul...
Fray: You know already. You know whose voice speaks in your heart. You know who has to shoulder more suffering than anyone else in the world... You know who you have to save!
Fray: Don’t act so surprised. Of course Fray was stone dead, right from the start. But you wanted it to be different.
Fray: A sword, a crystal... All that was missing was a teacher. So you made yourself one.
Fray: The soul crystal of the Dark Knight, in which all his experiences were stored. Your aether and repressed feelings... The pain that you locked deep inside your heart... All that suffering that you have to endure as a hero.... The fear that the Champion of Eorzea is not allowed to show... Those are the ingredients from which you made a new Fray.
Fray: A mentor who could show you the feelings slumbering in your heart. Who could express these feelings for you, like you never could.
Fray: You still don’t want to believe it, but you can’t deny it. You can’t deny what we have achieved.
Fray: Haven’t I been good to you? I’ve given you a choice that none of your so-called friends ever gave you. Your so-called friends in the Scions or the Eorzean Alliance.
Fray: The choice to say no. To not help. To think of yourself. To save yourself. I’ve given your innermost desire to say no a voice, and made sure you heard it too.
Fray: Open your eyes! Look at me! Are you seeing it now? I... am you!
[Fray takes on your name]
[Name]: Everything that happened until now was your story...
[Name]: ...And everything that happens from now on is mine!
[Duty battle dialogue]
Dark shadow: Fight me! As hard as you can! You can’t kill me, no matter how hard you try.
Dark shadow: You can’t defeat me. I’m a part of you.
Drillemont: [Name], I’ll help you! You helped us in our greatest time of need too.
Dark shadow: Help them? Bet they’ll have to save you again?
Dark shadow: I... we were so close...
Dark shadow: That is exactly the problem!
Dark shadow: Do you even know how ridiculous this struggle must look to the others?
Dark shadow: Free yourself from the pain!
[Battle over]
[Name]: After a battle everything else in life is turned down in comparison - you can deal with anything.
[Name]: I made you strong. I have... given you all your strength...
[Name]: Recognise the irony of your existence: Your strength is the cause of your pain. It makes you a hero, and as a hero you’re doomed to suffer.
Knight: [Name]! We’re with you!
Cenota: [Name]! Believe in yourself! Believe in us!
Clotairion: We know who you really are. Don’t forget that!
[Name]: They stand at your side... while you carry their pain.
[Name]: But that’s what you want, isn’t it? You want to suffer. You’re always looking for someone whose pain you can carry. That’s your nature.
[Name]: The nature of a dark knight. It’s your fate. Nobody will ever do it better than you...
[Name]: You seek this pain. You seek that suffering.
[Name]: You’ve brought the last offering. So take this reward...
[Name]: [Name]...
[Name]: [Name]... I’m the part of you incapable of being a hero. Hide me. Deep in your heart.
[Name]: I will speak to you again. Because I know you’re stronger than me.
[Name]: What belongs together comes together.
[Name]: I’ll return back into you and give you the power to protect the world. I’ll cry your tears. I’ll carry your burden. I’ll be your rage.
[Name]: Let’s go on a journey together again.
Capable knight: We have you back, Halone be praised! For a moment there I thought we’d lost you to your innermost demons.
Capable knight: I don’t really understand what happened here, but Lord Drillemont doesn’t seem too angry. Fortunately nobody was permanently injured...
Capable knight: First up I’ll make sure Fray’s body is given an appropriate burial.
Capable knight: And you? Are you sure everything is okay? You were a little... confused. But what am I implying... Forgive me, my lord. And farewell.
Notes and commentary:
"Das ist dein Leben und es endet jede Minute aufs Neue” is a quote from the German dub of Fight Club apparently, though I never watched it in any language so I have no idea what the context is.
German has formal and informal pronouns, but the only character in these quests to use formal pronouns for your character is the capable knight. That said, everyone still speaks fairly politely to you except Fray, who speaks so casually to everyone it crosses into being rude and overly familiar.
Personally I like German Fray a lot. They feel like the best of both worlds, keeping the emotional vulnerability of Japanese Fray while adding some of the bitter anger English Fray has. They also have a certain awkwardness to them that is really endearing, and which I’m not sure really comes across in just these two quests even with the lame breakfast oneliner. The lv35 quest has this exchange which I really like.
>That voice I heard. Who is speaking to me?
>Why were you being accused by the High Tribunal anyway? Hmmm?
-->Wild playing and endangering the elderly - shouldn’t that be punished severely? (This is the excuse the temple knights used to take away the old woman’s granddaughter)
Fray: R-really? But things like that just happen when kids play...
Fray: A-haha, I get it! You made a joke! You really got me there. Seriously though, what do you want to ask me?
What stood out to me about German Fray next to the English one (and my limited knowledge of the Japanese one) is that they’re a bit of a jokester, though it doesn’t really show in the last two quests because they’re getting desperate. When you free the prisoners from the Amal’jaa in the lv40 quest duty, the enemy yells “You’ll pay for this with your blood!” and Fray responds “Send me an invoice!”
There’s also the exchange with Fray when you learn what happened to the old woman whose grandchild was taken in the lv30 quest, which in English goes like this
Fray: They might spare the girl, you know. Leave her with a few scars and a lifelong lesson.
Fray: ...Or, we could beat every single one of them within an ilm of their lives and rescue the girl. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
[You nod, and Fray smiles]
Fray: I knew you would.
and in German goes like this
Fray: Are you the dark knight that will stand up for this old woman? Think about it carefully, since it might cost you your head.
Fray: Think about the enemies you’re facing, and the wounds they will inflict on you. Think about how you could just turn around and go lie in a warm bed, and nobody would suspect you.
[You nod, and Fray smiles]
Fray: I feared as much.
In the Japanese and English versions (and French, since French drk is just a direct translation of the English one) the original Fray legitimately lost his trial by combat, but in the German version the trial was rigged. The Ishgardian Citizen describes how Fray was winning until Halone herself struck him down with a pillar of fire - someone in the audience mumbled that it looked suspiciously like a Flare spell cast from the direction of the jury, but naturally the citizen immediately reported that heretic to the inquisition for doubting Halone’s judgement. The reason I even read the German version was because I got mad about translators making some shit up wholesale, but I have to admit I do like this particular thing that translators made up wholesale.
It also turns out Fray writing in the quest journal is unique to the English version! I really missed their commentary when I checked the German journal and it just wasn’t there. Another win for making shit up wholesale I suppose.
I’ve been told the scripts for different languages of the game are written concurrently rather than first in Japanese and then translated, so it’s not entirely fair to claim any one of them as the original that the others are unfaithful translations of. Even if that’s the case I still don’t think the different language scripts should be so wildly different in meaning from each other, but putting that aside I do like having these varying takes on Fray to rotate in my head and I wouldn’t have any complaints if the way they were implemented was through supplementary material like short stories or a manga or something.
I also think each version of Fray has something good going for them, and that they become better when put next to each other. I like how the English script has even your repressed feelings be so repressed that they cling to their front of smug superiority and righteous anger until the very end, and only manage to really express themselves in the journal where nobody would ordinarily look. I like Japanese Fray spilling their whole entire heart out and sounding permanently on the verge of crying from how desperate they are despite their imposing appearance. And my personal favourite is German Fray for how much they feel like genuinely just a regular person who’s in too deep and has no choice but to keep doing what they think is best.

luke’s proposal card: poem analysis
The poem that features prominently in Luke’s proposal card is a translated version of “Heimweg vom Fest” by Hermann Hesse. This post will have some translations about the poem and discuss how it suits Luke’s proposal.
My usual disclaimers apply for any of my translations here. Check my masterlist for more translations and analysis. Please also note that the original language of the poem is German, so I’ll be referencing other people’s translations of it.
Background
I found the Big Data Lab entry for the poem in Luke’s proposal card, which I had previously translated as “Going Home After the Holidays” and was unable to find the source for. Here’s the BDL entry + my translation of it.
“Going Home After Festivities” is a poem written in 1913 by the German poet Hermann Hesse. It was included in his collection of poems titled “Songs of the Lonely”, published in 1914 by the Heilbronn publisher Eugen Salzer. The original text reads, “[the four lines of the poem which comprise the last stanza]”. When Luke’s mother quoted it, she made some slight changes.
I’ll get to the actual content of those four lines soon, but that last stanza is what appears in the game and reappears for the BDL entry. It seems to use the translation by Lin Ke (林克) that appears in Herman Hesse Selected Poems (黑塞诗选), published 2017 by Sichuan People’s Publishing House (四川人民出版社). Although the BDL entry states that Luke’s mother changed it, the only difference I saw in what appeared in the card story was the omission of “But” at the start of where she quotes.
Translation
You can find the original German text here, along with an English translation “The way home after celebration” by Sharon Krebs and a French translation by Pierre Mathé). Below is the last stanza in English:
The poor soul wishes to cherish
Only the most evil and the best,
Be they agonies, be they celebrations --
For [the soul] glows for the sake of glowing.
@enheduanna-bfv also found the German version of the poem, and would translate the title as "On the way home from a feast".
And finally, here’s the Chinese translation that seems to be the same version used in the game, alongside my translation of it (possibly influenced by Krebs’s). Please note that differences in translation could be due to different interpretations or errors at any step of translation, especially my own.
节庆后回家 Going Home After Festivities
又一个节日响成了碎片, Yet another holiday splinters with a sound.
恐惧令人窒息,我蹒跚 In suffocating fear, I stagger
走过冰雪覆盖的农田,across the frozen-over farmlands,
害怕再也回不到家园。fearing I can never return home again.
你呀,缘于痛苦的沉醉,You, the intoxication that comes from pain –
喜乐的杯盏破碎之后,After the joyful cup shatters,
我愿在心里,我情愿将你 In my heart, I’m willing to
当成半是欢喜来承受。endure you as a half-joy.
但要么至善要么至恶—— But the greatest good, or greatest evil –
可怜的灵魂恰恰喜好,it’s just what the sorry soul is after.
或是痛苦,或是欢乐—— Whether suffering, or celebration –
因为它只为燃烧而燃烧。because it burns for the sake of burning.”
As a note, my original translation was:
“The greatest good, or greatest evil – it’s just what sorry souls are after. Whether pain, or pleasure – because it burns for the sake of burning.”
Taking the cue from Krebs’s translation, I changed the “sorry soul” to singular, so it can connect more explicitly with the last line (the “it” in the last line would also refer back to the soul). I also changed the pain/pleasure word pair since it didn’t evoke quite the right dichotomy, and suffering/celebration at least let me keep the alliteration I used to reflect the parallelism of the line in Chinese.
Discussion
I think it’s pretty striking how the title evokes such warmth with the idea of home and celebration, then completely subverts that with its opening stanza – the celebration ends violently, and the poem paints a wretched, despairing picture of someone in the mindset of fear and anxiety. The tone of the rest of the poem is never quite as bleak, but even at best it’s a bittersweet one where pain is always on the other side of the coin.
There are a few ways I find this poem quite fitting for Luke’s engagement card. The first I thought of was that the more somber tone belied by the innocent title was like the experience of reading the story. Instead of the engagement being the happy occasion that we’d expect, Luke shows us the grave that the bought for himself. We’re faced with Luke’s mortality and fears and resignation in a way that we’ve never been before; instead of a pure celebration, it’s something that’s in pieces and bittersweet.
Rosa is indisputably “home” to Luke, and with that in mind, the narrator’s desperation in their journey back home seems emotional enough to describe how Luke must feel about Rosa.
For the second stanza, I’ll try to base it on Krebs’s translation since it makes more sense with the rest of the poem. The narrator declares that they would rather carry the pain with them than the “half-hearted joy” that remains when the “cup of bliss” shatters. Luke certainly intended to choose pain instead of allowing himself what happiness he could have, but I also think he ended up compromising many times for that half-joy, in the many compromises he makes himself when it comes to Rosa: be part of the family, but don’t ever cause them trouble; reunite with Rosa, but don’t ask for anything more; officially be with Rosa, but don’t let yourself take the next step. Luke may not align perfectly with the main message of this stanza, but the ideas here are similar to his mentalities that were explored in the card story.
And finally, the last stanza, the one that Rosa’s mom would recite to Luke, since it was his mom’s favorite that she often used as a lullaby, and that Rosa will repeat back to Luke as a plea. The card already explains what it meant for Luke’s mom and what it can mean for Luke – living their life fully, honestly, passionately. The only thing I can add is that if the poem begins with Luke alone and frightened, seeking his home and family, then it’s a beautiful bookend to have the words spoken to him by his family be the thing that pulls him out of his resignation to half-hearted joys.

I assume that you have emotional attachments to objects (because of the print you love) and so have a favourite book which you know you will never read again but can’t throw out (and what is it if I’m right?) ❤️❤️
Hi Rory!!! 💖
oh wow everyone is nailing it with these, you are so, so correct!!!!
My inability to get rid of things I have emotional attachments to definitely applies to books, here is an incomplete list of books I will likely never even read or reread but also will never be able to give away:
My Gregor the Overlander books!! I knew Suzanne Collins mostly from these books and when Hunger Games came out/became popular I tried to tell all my friends about this series because I loved it so much when I was 10-12 years old!! And my first internet name was "Boots" because of the younger sister in that book, I loved her so much. And I don't see myself rereading them anytime soon but I have so many fond memories of absolutely devouring and rererererereading them as a preteen so they will stay forever!
"Die Geschwister Apraksin" by Karla Schneider, this was also one of my fave books when I was around 12-13, I don't remember much, except that it was about 5 orphaned siblings during or after the Russian revolution, and it absolutely broke my heart and I cried more than I had ever cried before when reading a book. I don't even think it was a particularly sad book, I think it just made me very emotional for some reason, to imagine these kids' lives and their struggles. And I read it as part of my local bookstore's initiative where they let kids borrow and read the advanced reader copies of books, and then we wrote little reviews that would get posted on a pinboard at the store. So when I had to give the book back (in order to borrow a new book, it was like a little library system within the bookstore), I immediately asked the bookseller if they had the book in stock because I wanted to buy it with my pocket money, but they only had the paperback and (again) I had gotten so attached to the hardback one and the bookseller could tell how much the book meant to me so she just gifted me the copy I had just returned, the one I read, and that meant so much to me, to get to keep the physical copy that I actually read and not have to buy a new version.
Herzen, Hände und Stimmen by Ian McDonald - I have never read this book, idek what it's about but from the book cover I assume it's scifi. I did an exchange semester in France as a teenager, and my host family didn't speak any german but somehow they got this random (thrifted) german book and they gave it to me bc I speak german. And I've never been that much into scifi but the gesture was so sweet and I have so many nice memories of my time with them, so even though I will probably never read that book I will also never give it away.
A complete translation from Vergils Aeneid with the latin and german text side by side. I did Latin in school, and for our final exams we all had to pick one specialized subject we would have an oral exam on, and my specialized subject in Latin class was the 6th book of the Aeneid, so even though I barely remember any Latin and will definitely not reread that for fun, I enjoyed it back in the day and will never get rid of that book.
I have a book on erotic dream interpretation, idk if that fully counts into this category, but my friend and I saw it when my uni library (!!) had a thrift sale of their old books, and that book was so hilarious, I had to get it and then for a while whenever I had people come over to my flat to pregame I would ask them about their dreams and would then very professionally interpret them with my book. This one might not fully count bc I'm not ruling out that I will never do that again but I haven't looked at it in a long time but would never get rid of it because it's too iconic haha
Okay this got way too long so I'm stopping now, but yeah hahaha you were so correct with this one 😂
make an assumption about me!

Kaiju Week in Review (October 23-29, 2022)
Marvel published Ultraman: The Mystery of Ultraseven #3 (of 5) on Wednesday. Kaiju-Ultra combat dominates this one, with Hayata and Ultraman debating how to handle the out-of-control Ultraseven as well. I've fallen off with a lot of Ultra Series stuff, including the post-Z shows (hence Decker's absence from these reviews), but this reimagining of the classics continues to impress. Watch for the Pestar cameo!
Rumble has finally come to Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. Made for theaters (the first trailer played before Sonic the Hedgehog) but banished to Paramount+ last December, this kaiju wrestling comedy went completely overlooked by genre fans. Maybe now it'll get its due. I quite enjoyed it—as a sports movie, it's pure formula, but as a monster movie it's something new. And yes, the wrestling organization has the same name as the old fanfic series on Godzilla Tower. I actually bought the artbook as prep for a podcast episode I recorded last year that never aired, so expect more posts on this one soon.
By the way, this is actually last week's news—I just didn't know about it until I found the DVD on a cart of new materials at my library.
Godzilla vs. Kong won the Saturn Award for Best Film Visual Effects, beating out a crowded field thanks to an almost two-year eligibility period. This is familiar territory for both monsters: Godzilla (1998) and King Kong (2005) were among the previous victors. Deserved over Top Gun: Maverick? Probably not, but I dunno why Maverick was one of the nominees to begin with. It was also nominated for Best Science Fiction Film, losing to Nope.
Varan won a remarkably intensive Godzilla Store poll earlier this year to become the next Movie Monster Series figure (Super Mechagodzilla placed second again after losing to Gorosaurus last year), and said figure has finally been revealed. It'll go on sale November 3. Other Godzilla Store-exclusive vinyls can be ordered through Buyee, so I expect this one will be too.
The upcoming CG short Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex is also getting MMS figures. No details yet that I could find, but since the film premieres November 3rd, I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped that day too.
Godzilla Battle Line is teasing Evangelion Unit 01 as the next new Battle Piece, a rare EvaGoji collaboration that won't require traveling to or importing from Japan to experience. That would cover three of the four films in the Shin series... can a giant Kamen Rider be far behind?
Godzilla's 68th birthday is next Thursday, and since reporting on all the U.S. tie-in screenings after the fact won't do anyone any good, I'm going to list them all now:
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla - Limited release nationwide through Fathom Events; check if it's playing near you here
Godzilla (1954) - Alamo Drafthouse locations; will use Toho's 4K restoration
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - Roxy Cinema in NYC; 35mm print
Godzilla (1954); Rodan; Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster; The War of the Gargantuas - hosted by John Carpenter on various digital channels from November 3 to 6
Licensing International also has a list of all the non-film collaborations planned for that day. Nothing jumps out, to be honest, but I figured I'd include it.
But if you're like me and already have commitments that evening, why not check out @spacehunter-m's reconstruction of the 1956 German theatrical version of Godzilla instead? It premiered in West Germany just a few months after Godzilla, King of the Monsters! opened in the States, but it's actually based on the Japanese cut (just 13 minutes shorter). English subtitles are included.

Hi! I saw your post about Magda’s letter a few hours ago and did my best do do a translation of it (except for a few words that I just could not make out for the life of me🫠). I do have a german version in my handwriting written down as well, if you’d like that too, but here’s what I’ve got. I hope this helps😊
My dear happy Mrs. Hess!
I can barely describe how happy I was this morning when I read the happy news of the birth of your son in the newspaper!
I went to Maria immediately with the news and the both of us had tears in our eyes!
Accept my deep and heartfelt congratulations for you, your dear husband and the smallest Hess!
Now the toughest hours are behind you and I hope from the bottom of my heart that it wasn’t too awful.
It is the biggest happiness of a woman but we pay for it with the biggest pain.
The beautiful thing is, that as soon as […], it’s all but forgotten!
How happy you have to be! I can completely relate to it. Back then, when I felt as if the elemental violence of the birth pains should’ve taken my life and I believed to plunge into a deep, deep abyss, I heard the words: “Ha! You’re […] the boy!!”
And from the abyss I climbed into the sky and had to confess with incessant crying:
“You’re the happiest woman in the world! Be aware that there cannot be a more beautiful moment in your entire life!”
This is what I think you must have felt like and I share your happiness that you got to experience it.
The hour in […], when I […] my little Hilde and you were there […] haunted me many times and that’s why my joy was so great when I heard the good news from your husband in the summer, that’s why my thoughts were with you so many times during the past months and that’s why my Mitfreude is so great now!
As soon as I get out of my loneliness and to Berlin, I’ll send you a small token of my Mitfreude.
Until then, I wish the three of you all, all good and the little guy a kiss!
(Hopefully it will be a ‘little guy’ again for me. My small one should come early in May!)
In warm friendship,
your Magda Goebbels
Thank you very much for the translation! This is wonderful! ❤️
Thank you also to user jg-archive, who is currently translating the letter. I am sure that with everybody's help we will finally "decipher" the full letter.

Klaine Advent 2022: burst
Words: ~ 2,000 words
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary: Kurt wishes his companion would stop flirting with the sister missionary. Also, a duet.
I’m back with more vignettes from my Mormon!Klaine universe for Klaine Advent 2022! This vignette takes after Mustard Seed and before A New Beginning (i.e. before they attend the symphony).
My Mormon!Klaine Masterpost. Klaine Advent (and some other recent) posts in bold; Klaine Valentines 2023 posts in bold and italics.
Note: If you have been reading this as I've been posting, you might get to the latter part of this vignette and think, “Hey, I recognize this scene but also it’s different?” I’ve been dissatisfied with how the moment in Forever’s Not Enough Time when Kurt and Blaine accidentally sing a sincere romantic duet fits into the rest of the universe. So I moved the duet to earlier in the mission, when Blaine is still pretty clueless about the nature of his feelings, and the scene plays out differently even as many of the emotions remain the same. Here’s the video for The Circle of Our Love.
--------
Elder Anderson was giggling. Not laughing politely, not chuckling in a manly but somehow disinterested manner. Nope. He was giggling—his cheeks pink, his face scrunched up in delight, his chin tucking repeatedly toward his chest as if he'd simply couldn't stand to look at the source of his delight or he would burst.
It was so annoying. Kurt didn't think Schwester Rose's story was that funny. Costuming mishaps were serious business. Sure, for the performers, they made a silly anecdote. But all Kurt could think about was the costumer who had to spend the entire night and day before the next show rebuilding their work almost from scratch.
Schwester Wilde shared a meaningful look with Kurt. She wasn't amused, either. “Eat your dinners before they get cold. You paid good money for that.”
“Good money” was relative. They were at their favorite Italian joint, and the reason it was their favorite was because the food was cheap, the portions were generous, and the baked ziti stuck to their ribs for the better part of a day, even when they had to bike all around town. But on a missionary budget, dining out always felt like a splurge.
Elder Anderson and Schwester Rose dutifully obeyed—at least for a few minutes. Alas, the urge to flirt was apparently irresistible. They were soon at it again, this time exchanging lyrics from The Little Mermaid soundtrack—Schwester Rose teaching Elder Anderson snippets of the Swiss-German version of “A Whole New World,” and Elder Anderson teaching her the English one.
“Didn't anyone ever teach you to not to sing at the dinner table?” Schwester Wilde scolded.
“No,” answered Schwester Rose, unfazed. “My mother and I do it all the time. It helps with the digestion.”
“Anyway,” added Elder Anderson, “we're only doing one line at a time, and we're not being loud, so it doesn't count.”
“Perhaps,” Schwester Wilde said in a tone that conveyed You're wrong. “But we haven’t finished going through our business.”
Kurt had been hoping to put off the rest of their business until they were done eating, because he didn't like to write and chew at the same time, but this was officially their district meeting. They never met with the sisters just to socialize—though Elder Anderson, from his behavior, clearly wished they did.
Kurt shoved the rest of his food in his mouth, got out his enormous binder as Schwester Wilde got hers out, and the two pairs of missionaries attended to their statistics. It was boring, but it had been a good call on Schwester Wilde's part. It offered a break from the incessant flirting. Kurt was going to have to lecture Elder Anderson again about his behavior with women.
“Last but not least, we’ve been talking to some inactives,” Schwester Wilde announced as they finished up.
“Oh?” said Kurt. As far as mission priorities went, inactives actually were least—since they were already baptized, you couldn't count them toward those totals. But it was a nice thought.
“Yeah. You’re familiar with the McCarthy twins, of course. The ones who barely ever come to church because they’re ‘busy touring’?” Schwester Wilde made quote marks with her fingers as she spoke the last phrase. She glanced at Elder Anderson. “Or maybe only Elder Hummel is? They were at the Easter service, but they didn't linger.”
“No, I’ve met them,” said Elder Anderson. “Elder Hummel introduced me to them.” Kurt was glad he didn't elaborate. He wasn't sure Schwester Wilde would approve of missionaries going to watch a yodel-pop rehearsal on a non-P-day, even if it had been on their lunch break.
“Well, we've been talking to Madison—sharing scripture verses for her and Mason to study and encouraging them to visit other wards and branches when they're on tour. There isn't always a local ward or branch, but maybe you two could talk to Mason about doing the sacrament for her when that’s the case? You know, remind him of the importance of the weekly renewal of our baptismal vows. I think that would help Madison to have access to that, and Mason’s often the only priesthood holder in her vicinity. Remind him of his duty to her.” Schwester Wilde took a sip of her soda. “And obviously it would help Mason, too.”
Elder Anderson’s eyebrows furrowed. “That's not really fair, is it?”
“What?” asked Kurt.
“That women have to rely on whatever guy is closest by to have access to the sacrament and all the other blessings of the priesthood.”
Schwester Wilde scowled at Elder Anderson. “Women are naturally better at being faithful. Men are more wishy-washy, so the Lord gave them responsibilities to remind them of the importance of following him. Like Mason—maybe he wouldn't do the sacrament for himself, but if he’s reminded that his sister is depending on him for the blessings promised her at her baptism, he will probably do it out of love—I mean, they are insanely codependent.”
“Exactly!” chimed in Schwester Rose. “Well, maybe not the codependent part—I can't speak to that. But I think it's beautiful how God takes advantage of men’s love for and protectiveness of women to build their faith. Don’t you?” She smiled at Elder Anderson hopefully.
Kurt resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
This time, however, Elder Anderson did not return the flirtation. He frowned skeptically. “It didn't feel unfair to you not to have access to the priesthood when you were growing up, just because there wasn't a man living at home?”
Kurt was startled by the question. But he knew Elder Anderson didn’t mean to be callous by bringing up Schwester Rose’s imperfect family structure. He pried into other people's business out of an overabundance of empathy.
Schwester Rose must have understood that as well, because she answered cheerfully, “Not at all. We had lots of access to the priesthood. We could call up our home teachers anytime, or the bishop, or anyone in the ward. It’s important to depend on other church members for things. That’s how we form a community.”
Later, as they walked to the bus stop in the dark, Schwester Rose returned to that theme, but for more secular reasons. “Speaking of depending on others for certain things, remember that movie we watched on Easter? Saturday’s Warrior? The tunes have been going through my head over and over, but I’ve only heard them once so I don't know the words and can't sing them, and it's driving me crazy. But you two—” she pointed at the elders “—have them all memorized, don't you? Can you teach one or two to me. Maybe the one where he’s painting in the park?” She tugged on Schwester Wilde’s sleeve, like a little girl begging for candy, even though it was surely Elder Anderson’s sleeve she wanted to tug on. But it was against the rules for sisters and elders to touch each other outside of handshakes. Sometimes a companion had to suit as a body double. “And also the one where they’re in the premortal existence singing about the cycle of love!”
“A love song?” Kurt said. “We’re missionaries.”
“He has a point,” echoed Schwester Wilde.
“But it’s not trashy romance,” Schwester Rose effused. “And it could be about any love, not just romantic love, right? Like, it could be about choosing your parents or siblings or friends in the preexistence, too.”
Kurt ran through the lyrics in his head. To his surprise, she was right. “I thought you said you didn't remember the lyrics.”
“I don’t! Just a few phrases. but I remember that was my impression when I listened to it,” she said. “To be honest, it might have made me think about my cats a little. I get so homesick for them so much.”
Elder Anderson made a little fawning noise. Schwester Wilde huffed.
“I know technically they probably weren't in the preexistence,” Schwester Rose continued, “but I think they'll be in heaven, because heaven is supposed to be a happy place.”
“Oh my gosh!” Elder Anderson squealed. “I said the same thing to Elder Hummel a while back. Didn’t I, Elder Hummel?”
“Yes,” Kurt said, amused at his companion’s entusiasm in spite of himself. It was really sickening how well suited Schwester Rose and Elder Anderson were for each other. “But I didn’t endorse the idea.”
“Ah, but you didn’t deny the possibility, either,” Elder Anderson said with a wink. “Well, what do you say we make the sisters happy by singing a love song about cats?”
“How is that supposed to make me happy?” asked Schwester Wilde.
Schwester Rose squeezed her arm. “Because you're going to think about it in terms of forever families and your future husband and all those sorts of things, and also because it will make your companion happy.”
Schwester Wilde scoffed, but her eyes were smiling. “You're happy all the time, Schwester Rose. But whatever. Serenade us, elders.”
Elder Anderson’s eyes meeting Kurt’s in challenge. “I’ve seen that smile somewhere before,” he started.
It was unfair. There was no way Kurt could resist the power of Elder Anderson's charm. At least there weren't that many people around to hear them misbehaving. “I’ve heard your voice before …”
Kurt fell into the duet. He’d known it by heart since he was a little boy, singing it with his mother is they washed the dishes, or in front of the mirror imagining a duet with beautiful Spencer, a teenage boy at the Hill Cumorah Pageant who was his first childhood crush—before Kurt had figured out he wasn’t supposed to feel that way about other boys.
But the way Elder Anderson was singing to him now—his expression sincere and warm, and his voice full of emotion, as if the lyrics were a true representation of his heart’s desire—Kurt felt like maybe he was allowed to feel that way. That maybe eternal love could be real, even for him.
Feelings come so strong,
Like we known each other oh, so long.
If the celestial kingdom could include cats, then why couldn’t it include Kurt’s kind of love?
The circle of our love is more than just a rising sun that sets;
The circle of our love, it goes forever.
Looking into Elder Anderson's eyes, Kurt couldn't think of a single reason why not.
*
The circle of our love begins with now—
It felt, somehow, as if Blaine had waited all his life for this moment. He’d thought he’d been waiting for some amazing woman to walk into his life and turn his world upside down with her beauty and brilliance. And maybe that would happen someday. But Blaine suddenly didn't care if it did. This felt more important.
Hearing Elder Hummel sing about love and eternity, Blaine understood: He had already found an eternal companion.
Why didn’t they ever talk about this in general conference or firesides—the sanctity of friendship; its deep, eternal, all-consuming nature? He could read about it in the scriptures, in the story of Jonathan and David and the accounts of the first apostles, in the intense love that existed between Jesus and his disciples. But no modern apostle had warned him friendship could feel like this—as intense as a refining fire, as important as life itself.
The circle of our love extends beyond the reach of time,
Beyond the span of days and years, it goes forever.
It opened the door to paradise.
The circle of our love is found in every warm and tender thing—
Blaine had never been in love. He’d never found a girl who made him feel the sense of recognition he felt when he was around Elder Hummel. Kurt. He couldn’t imagine feeling it this strongly with anyone else.
That type of recognition didn’t always meant romance, of course. Sometimes it just meant that you belonged with a person, forever.

Reading Diary - Farseer Trilogy Part 07
Chapters 8 and 9
Sticking with chapters doesn't fit in with my spinning rhythm so... I will update this reading diary as I get to it.
Also somewhere in Chapter 9 I switched to the English Version of the audiobook. But my problems with several names remain as my listening comprehension is still shit and I just don't really catch the names now xD But ow let's get to business,
Verity departs from Buckkeep and Fitz goes on his first trip since his arrival at court. He is supposed to wait on a very old lady with a reaaaally bad temper. It's been a while since I listened to this part of the story. But I remember I felt something torn about her. On the one hand I thought "Hell what a terrible old hag, may Fitz never have to interact with her again" and the vague feeling there was more about her.
Well after a while of waiting on that moody ill-tempered ... lady they arrive at their destination. Fitz accompanies her to the inn where she usually stays and leaves for the keep where he tends to the horses but then has to go to Verity because his dog acts strange. Fitz quickly finds the cause of it and hopefully the poor beast will get his enrichment soon. (I love how Verity spoils his dog in secret)
Well Fitz gets a bath and, together with Verity, attends dinner with Duke Kelvar (Is he written like this?) and his very young wife. Fitz quickly sees that Duchess Grace is probably from lower birth and the Duke spoils her in riches - money that should rather go into infrastructure and manning watchtowers.
At night Fitz gets really hungry and goes for the kitchen to find something heartier to eat than what he got at dinner.
While eating a young maid enters the kitchen with her retching child which turned out to be a dog. At this point I already assumed her identity. Fitz saves the poor dog from choking on a poultry bone the girl had given the poor thing. And while he lectures her on dog caring he, too, realizes that she is Duchess Grace and uses some kitchen table diplomacy to hopefully get the watchtower thing solved.
Then Fitz returns to bed.
At the beginning of Chapter 9 we get a little excurse on the fool - definitely an interesting person - I liked how Fitz states no one knows the fool's gender and the fool also doesn't clarify it!
He is woken up still far before morning because the lady he had waited on during their journey (I really didn't catch her name I just know it's different from the German name x.x) calls for him and only him.
Whe he arrives at the inn, he quickly learns why: Waiting for him was no one other than Chade. Of course Fitz is suspicious the Chade came along because he didn't trust him to do his job. but Chade just did some listening in the streets outside of Fitz's reach.
Well some more politics, some more raids, abductions and a strange call for ransom. Sth along the lines of "Don't pay this and we will let the people go, Pay this and we will keep them."
Then Chade and Fitz leave the town and travel back to Buckkeep to take care of that matter. Chade get visibly exhausted by the journey which follows another road than the one they had taken with verity: shorter, quicker, but on rougher paths that cannot be used with carriages.
When they arrive at the sea a boat is waiting for them, they get on and continue Their journey on the water.
And that finishes chapter 9
I was not really surprised to find Chade waiting for Fitz in the inn. It makes sense for him to travel in this disguise. I guess he didn't want Fitz to know so soon, but well... things are urgent.
And now I will return to my spinning wheel because this post gets too long.

Finally, I have the courage to write this...! This one is a tricky post, I will admit it. It will be both about the weird german that was used in World Dai Star — the anime, since as far as I know there wasn't a lick of this language on the game — and about a little critic I have about the english translation. Please, bear with me.
Well then... we have this scene here:
Bist du gut in Japan angekommen?
Erzähl mir bitte wie deine Vorspielen war.
Ich verspreche mir sehr viel von dir.
This is what is written in the text that Kathrina's mom sent. There is only an english translation about the first two sentences:
Did you make it to Japan safely?
Tell me if you pass or fail your audition immediately.
Which is understandable, since the third sentence is the weird one — something that I discovered after trying to work on them with my very basic german knowledge. Yes, I am not a german speaker (yet) and my level of this language is barely scratching the A1; but I did start studying it before, so I do think I should comment about it. Anyone who has more knowledge about me in german can correct me on any error I made if they wish to do so!!
And why am I even talking about it...? 'Cause it misled me about the daughter and mother relationship that Kathrina and Theresa have. Or, being more specific, the translation misled me. After reading it, my first thought was that Kathrina had the typical relationship that rivals characters have with their mothers in anime: a very bad one. The first question seemed okayish, but the second one? It gave me the impression that Theresa was strict, unsupportive of her daughter's wishes and distant. It seemed that she only cared if Kathrina was good enough as an actress.
Of course, we know by now that this is not true. However I must admit I was pretty surprised when I found it out. When I saw that Theresa cared for her daughter? When I watched her being worried for Kathrina, being understanding and supportive? I couldn't understand why she was like that — and I blame my confusion on the translation of the text.
Look, I do know how hard it is to translate something. I am a language nerd, and translation is one of my favorite topics — still starting to study it seriously and all. That's why I will be critical over it, especially if it changes how I am supposed to interpret a character. [And that's why I said to bear with me...]
Thus, here is, more or less, my translations about the first two sentences. It is definitely not a great one, but it's more in character, that I assure.
Did you reach easily in Japan?
Relate me please how your audition went.
See, way less demanding...! I tried to translate the third one, but in german it simply doesn't make sense. It became something like “I promise me much much as long for you” — this is me translating german to portuguese to english, now. Can you hear me crying? No way I will try to translate it straight from german to english after finding results like this from translating machines when I first tried to.
Seeing as the last one was weird, I asked my friend if she could translate the text for me from japanese to portuguese. At first she thought there wasn't a japanese version of it, but she soon found it!
It became something like this — just a note I am, again, translating from portuguese to english:
Did you got safely in Japan?
Send me the audition result as soon possible.
I am awaiting with anticipation.
Very different, no? It also made me realize that the anime translations were, most definitely, also from the japanese version. Seeing as both of them have the second sentence mentioning Kathrina to tell her mother the results the fastest she can, it makes sense for it to be from the same language. Also, doesn't the third one make way more sense now?
Theresa also sounds more like a supportive and kind mom here than she did on the first translation. If I was introduced right at the start at this, I would definitely not be surprised when she shows up later. Being honest, I would expect something like she pulled off on the anime, hehe.
That's why I am criticizing the translation; it can help us to understand the character or it can drive us away — or, in my case, misled me from what the character actually is. And as also a literature nerd, this hurt me, since I will make all the wrong connections based on the little I know (the translated subtitles) and then, when I am proven wrong, I will not understand why since the first piece of information does not correlate with I am presented later. Which also makes me interpret things in a way it shouldn't. That's why I am a big supporter of having a variable of translations about the same source!!
Anyway, that wasn't supposed to get this big. I hope you enjoyed some part of this, since this is my first meta post, and that I made you think a little more about how complicated translation is...!

Seb’s F1 records
In preparation for Seb’s birthday this Sunday on the 3rd July, here is a short post detailing all the records that German F1 driver Sebastian Vettel holds.
Big shoutout to Wikipedia which I used for all of this
(This is a condensed version of post I'm writing detailing Seb’s records - I would post it for his birthday but realistically I cannot pump it out for then so this post was created)
(ALSOOO if I was wrong about a record please do say as I did the research for this during the preseason testing 2022. This would also beg the question why the fuck it took me this long to post the shortened version but anyways. But in 2022, the record holders might have changed hands but I have not kept up with that lmao)
Record Holder for
Most wins in a season - 13 in 2013 (shared with Michael Schumacher)
Most pole positions in a season - 15 in 2011
Most laps led in a season - 739 in 2011
Most consecutive wins - 9 from 2013 Belgian Grand Prix to 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix
Most consecutive grand slams - 2 with 2013 Singapore Grand Prix and 2013 Korean Grand Prix (shared with Alberto Ascari (1952) and Jim Clark (1963))
Most wins from pole position in a season - 9 in 2011 (shared with Nigel Mansell (1992)) [the power of the number 5 despite the fact that Seb had number 1 that season and he only took it from 2014 onwards]
Youngest Grand Prix pole position winner - 21 years and 72 days [2008 Italian Grand Prix 13th September 2008]
Youngest driver to score a double (pole and race win) - 21 years and 73 days [2008 Italian Grand Prix 14th September 2008]
Youngest driver to score a hat-trick (pole position, race win and fastest lap) - 21 years and 353 days [2009 British Grand Prix 21st June 2009]
Youngest F1 World Champion - 23 years and 134 days 2010 season [clinched title at final race Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 14th November 2010]
Youngest F1 Double World Champion - 24 years and 99 days 2011 season [clinched at the 15th race out of 19 Japan Grand Prix on 9th October 2011]
Youngest F1 Triple World Champion - 25 years and 146 days* 2012 season [clinched at the final race Brazilian Grand Prix on 25th November 2012] *calculated it myself so might be wrong just to let you know
Youngest F1 Quadruple World Champion - 26 years and 117 days* 2013 season [clinched at the 16th race out of 19 Indian Grand Prix on 27th October 2013] *again calculated it myself so may be wrong
Youngest F1 runner-up - 22 years and 121 days 2009 season (1st November 2009)
Shortest time elapsed before getting a penalty - 9 seconds 2006 Turkish Grand Prix (25th August 2006) Literally 9 seconds into his career for speeding in the pit lane
Most point between first and second in the Championship - 155 between Seb (397) and Alonso (242) in 2013
Most laps led in a season - 739 in 2011
Now the next section isn't about records he holds but is more about where he ranks(?) I’m not sure how to put it. Umm let’s say there is a record for fastest time to drop a hot dog onto the track (Disclaimer: this doesn't exist and is solely created for demonstration purposes) he would have the third fastest time.
These following records are structured like that except it’s real and not non-sensical like that.
Stuff to note:
Total race entries - 7th of all time with 287 (at time of writing 1/7/2022) (Note: tbh I don’t think he’ll lose the 7th position any time soon as Lewis Hamilton [6th] has ten more and Felipe Massa [8th] has 15 less and is also not active anymore)
Total race starts - 7th of all time with 286 (at time of writing 1/7/2022 before the Silverstone Grand Prix on the 3rd July) [Note: same as before as Lewis Hamilton [6th] has 11 more and Felipe Massa [8th] has 17 less and is again no longer active)
Now let’s take a short break to hear from our sponsor-- there is no sponsor for this lmao. Anyway, just to define the difference between race entries and race starts. Wikipedia says that a race entry is when a driver takes part in at least one official practice session with intent to take part in the race. In contrast, Wikipedia says that for a driver to have started a race, they would had to have lined up on the grid or at the pit lane exit for the start of the race.
Anyway back to regular programming : )
Most consecutive race starts - 10th of all time with 159 (2007 Hungarian Grand Prix - 2016 Australian Grand Prix)

The next two are records that are group effort(?):

Fewest drivers becoming World Champions in a decade - 3 (2010s) with Seb, Sir Lewis Hamilton and Nico ‘Britney’ Rosberg
Most different race winners in consecutive races (starting from first race in a season) - 7 in 2012. Jenson Button in Australia; Fernando Alonso in Malaysia; Nico Rosberg in China; Sebastian Vettel in Bahrain; Pastor Maldonado in Spain; Mark Webber in Monaco and Lewis Hamilton in Canada.
Well this went... out of control. But it shows that Seb really is an impressive driver and he is also an important activist for the environment and an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
Happy (early) Birthday Seb!

The lack of social interaction from 2 people who have obsessively stalked us.
EGX 23rd September 2018 -
First time I ever met Liam in person. I said hello but I hardly ever communicated with him.
Christening 22nd October 2018 -
First time meeting Stacey, I chatted to her quite abit because Phil and Liam occasionally went off to do their own thing. It was not long after this event her and Liam added me on Facebook, I never communicated with them privately.
Round Jess & Steve's early November 2018 - I hardly spoke during this gathering, mainly because I was very shy in a big group, but Liam & Stacey was there and during the evening Stacey proceeded to slap Liam round the head really hard, for no reason and then laughed hysterically because of how hard it was.
Comic Con & German Market 24th November 2018 - Liam & Stacey came with us to comic con & the German Market,I only interacted with them a couple times during the day because me and Phil explored different stalls as much as we could. When we was waiting for the train to Birmingham New Street from Birmingham International Stacey was swearing and complaining about being told to stand behind the white line whilst waiting for the train. What I started to notice with both their attitudes is they would complain about anything. I joked they was the female and male version of a Karen. They wasn't at the German Market long, I never even realised they had gone home until I asked Phil and he said they had gone.
Round Liams house 27th April 2019 - Liam had invited us round his house during the afternoon and as soon as we set foot in the front door there was a very weird atmosphere. Stacey never spoke to us, she was clearly in a mood and when I took snapchat photos with Phil she acted in a forceful way with Liam to take pictures with her. This was the first time I ever met Lucy who was there with her partner Will. During the gathering Liam took Phils phone and went into the kitchen with it, where I followed and he proceeded to go through Phils phone such as texts and messenger messages and then took photos of himself on Phils phone before giving it Phil back.
Masala Lounge 15th September 2019 - The last ever meeting was at the Masala Lounge with Phils other friends and their partners. Because there was so many of us I sat one end of the table where they sat the other end. When we got to Masala Lounge, Stacey blanked us and proceeded to strut in to the restaurant, flick her hair and sat in the corner. The whole time we was having a meal we did not interact with her at all.
Liam occasionally joined my friends playing Overwatch a couple nights. This probably happened 2-3 times.
I have not, or have I tried to see them in person again after these interactions. Usually when I block people, I never have any issues with them after. I've never blocked 2 people who have thrown their toys out of the pram and obsessively stalked. I am posting all this proof now because I want to prove what these two have done, their behaviour, which is psychotic and how I have repeatedly asked them to leave us alone and they carry on and will claim they are the victims. My last ever communication with them was with Stacey on the 22nd February 2023 after Liam made two fake accounts on Reddit to stalk me (ASimpleManInADress & MrsNervous) and I had ago at her for their behaviour over the years and also told them more than once in the message to leave me and Phil alone and move on with their lives. This was done through an old Facebook profile which I have since deleted. I have only been vocal in the r/Stalking about my experience, I've never named them and if they was to complain of anything I've posted it is simply because they have been actively stalking me on Littleredguardian since the account was made 26th June 2023. I have not sent any messages since, I do not have Twitter, I do not have Tiktok, they are blocked on Instagram and Facebook. I honestly wish with everything they've done that I had never met them.

How much time do you spend thinking about a reply before you sit down to type?
Are you proficient in any language outside of your native tongue? do you write characters that speak multiple languages?
Do you proofread / edit as you write or do you just wing it and save editing for last?
When roleplaying, do you pace yourself when answering replies or do you like to write for them as soon as you can?
Do you reply to threads you have the most inspiration for first or do you work on them in the order in which you received them?
What is your average length / word count regarding roleplay replies? does the length of your partner’s replies matter or is important to you?
What is your limit for how many active threads you can handle at one time?
Are you more comfortable writing in private or public spaces? Why or why not?
Do you have a routine that helps you prepare to work on your writing?
Between mobile or desktop version, which do you prefer regarding writing drabbles or roleplay replies?
When it comes to replies do you trim your posts? Does it bother you when others don’t trim their own replies? Is trimming not a problem at all?
Have you ever had a roleplay partner who helped you to improve something about your own writing quality?
If a reply isn’t coming easily do you draft it for later, delete and start over, chat with your writing partner for help, or something else?
Are there any writing elements that you sometimes find difficult? Monologues, character engagement, setting, progression, dialogue, other?
What subjects / genres do you find yourself becoming the most passionate about when you’re writing?
Does fatigue affect your ability to write or do you always have energy for the grind?
Are there any genres that you will not write or avoid writing?
Are there any writing habits others may have that you find frustrating or exhausting?
Are you comfortable asking your writing partner to correct something in their reply if they got a detail incorrect?
When working on replies or drabbles, do you prefer a desktop keyboard, a laptop, typing on mobile, or other accessibility methods?
{out of paprikash} OMG you sent almost the entire meme! O_O Alrighty then, here we go! XD Below the cut for length...
How much time do you spend thinking about a reply before you sit down to type?
It realy depends on what muse I'm writing, what the thread is about, and what's going on at the time in the thread. If it's something very simple like fluff and it's a muse that comes to be very easily, then I won't need much time to think at all, especially if the replies I'm writing are on the shorter side. But if I'm writing a very complex muse (e.g. Vision, Vincent, sometimes Tony), it's a long and detailed thread, and I'm writing about political intrigue or intricate technology or anything super complex, then yeah I'll sit on it for a while to kindof mull over what I want to write. It's the difference between replying as soon as I get it (whenever that blog is scheduled again), and maybe letting it sit for a week or two while I ponder things.
Are you proficient in any language outside of your native tongue? do you write characters that speak multiple languages?
I have a basic proficiency in German and Japanese. I studied German in high school and college and Japanese in just college. But unfortunately I don't write any muses who speak those languages, haha. As far as languages I have written in... I created my own fictional language for an original race I made when writing one of my novels, but I never used it on this site, just in original writing and for D&D purposes. I sometimes will try to incorporate some Arabic for Ardeth or Spanish for Carlos, but I don't overdo it because I know nothing about those languages and I don't trust G.oogle T.ranslate, so I don't want to make mistakes and risk offending anyone. Funnily enough, the muse I've written in a different language for the most is Leeloo using her fictional Divinian language, haha. I have a Divinian lexicon that I downloaded which is the same that they actually used for the movie as developed by the director, and I've read the director's notes on how the grammar functions in the language. It's... interesting to navigate, but once you kindof figure out how the grammar and everything works, you can kindof function in it well enough to make it seem at least halfway legit. And since it's fictional, I won't offend anyone if I make a mistake haha.
Do you proofread / edit as you write or do you just wing it and save editing for last?
Yes? Haha. I edit as I go, rereading sentences and paragraphs when I finish them, and then once I finish the entire reply, I'll read through it again. That's just how I roll because that's how I used to edit when I wrote my books, so I just got into that kind of frequent editing habit. It's a wonder, then, with all this editing, that I have so many freaking typos in my replies. XD
When roleplaying, do you pace yourself when answering replies or do you like to write for them as soon as you can?
It really depends on the muse and how much free time I have. Generally speaking I try to get to things that are time sensitive first, like asks I was just sent, things to do with holidays or certain events, or things that maybe just won't be relevant or doable if I wait a long time to reply to them. After that, I try to bounce around and do a little bit for as many people as I can so that everyone gets a turn. This... doesn't always work on some blogs (like Wanda's, unfortunately) where I have so may writing partners that I can't get to everybody every week. Other than that, I'll just reply to whatever the muse wants to do at the time. Very rarely I will reply a bunch of times to the same thread in a night, and that's only when the muse is so strong for that thread that I need to gush-write and indulge myself, heh.
Do you reply to threads you have the most inspiration for first or do you work on them in the order in which you received them?
Oh... I actually kindof also answered this one in the question just before this. XD
What is your average length / word count regarding roleplay replies? does the length of your partner’s replies matter or is important to you?
It varies with partner and thread, honestly. I prefer writing very long and detailed threads, but not everyone does. And lately time has not always allowed for me to write the lengths I would prefer. Sometimes if I see that I'm writing a lot and my partner consistently writes very little in return, I'll scale back so that I don't overwhelm them. But generally speaking... my length will tend to mirror that of my partners' replies, only because I try to address everything that they say in their reply unless it's not needed or it's reached a natural conclusion. So my muse will react to all gestures, words, and actions of yours... if they ask questions, my muse will always answer or at least react... or if anything happens I will try to have my muse react but then also add to it to advance the story. So the more you write, the more my muse has to react to, and the more I'll write back. =)
What is your limit for how many active threads you can handle at one time?
Definitely not as many as I have right now, haha. I'm one of these people that tends to just accumulate threads and keep making new ones, and the old ones just kindof get phased out. I work best with partners that can deal with replies after weeks or months on some threads, or ones who, if they wanted to continue something old, have no problem just skipping time and making a new thread. I just end to kindof work in the present because I don't have a lot of free time and I'm on meds that makes my memory a little wonky, so sometimes I genuinely forget about older threads. I realize this isn't the best way to run rp blogs, and it has kindof gotten out of hand, but I've found several very understanding rp partners who are perfectly okay with just rolling with my chaotic disarray, haha, and somehow we still manage to have fun, which is the overall point of this hobby anyway, right? XD
Are you more comfortable writing in private or public spaces? Why or why not?
Private spaces. Because when I write, I like... leave this world, hahaha. Seriously, like... I get so inside the world, the story, my character's head, etc. that I will say their dialog out loud to make sure it sounds like something they'd say, or I'll smile or chuckle as I'm writing if something funny is going on, or I'll cry if I get really into the emotion of what I'm writing. So....... to do that in public spaces would be really embarrassing. Also I would not be very aware of my surroundings, like to watch my purse or my own safety or whatever else is going on, because I get that absorbed when I write. So yeah, private writing is better for me.
Do you have a routine that helps you prepare to work on your writing?
Not one that I stick to, no. Usually I just decide okay, time to write, and I sit down, open the site, and start working. Sometimes if I need muse, or if I have a ton of muse and want to really soak in it, I'll put on one of my muse's movies or a movie with their FC in it, or I'll listen to music from their movies/shows. The music has to stop once I start writing though, because I tend to focus on music if it's on and I won't be able to concentrate on writing otherwise. But the movies I can leave on in the background while I write. Writing with background noise is better for me than silence.
Between mobile or desktop version, which do you prefer regarding writing drabbles or roleplay replies?
I prefer desktop, because I have a lot of problems with my eyesight, and staring at tiny little letters on a phone for hours tends to give me headaches. Also, mobile is so buggy and weird, not that the desktop version isn't, but I find it easier, quicker, and less obnoxious to deal with the setup and issues of the desktop version than the mobile version, personally.
When it comes to replies do you trim your posts? Does it bother you when others don’t trim their own replies? Is trimming not a problem at all?
I do... because I have several rp partners for whom not trimming posts is a major pet peeve and they really hate it, so for their sake, I do. Also I mean... with some of the replies I write, they really do become unwieldy at long lengths, so yeah I try to remember to trim if possible. Personally, I don't really care, long posts don't bother me at all, but as a courtesy to others who really dislike long posts or long chains of replies, I trim. =)
Have you ever had a roleplay partner who helped you to improve something about your own writing quality?
To be honest, I've been writing for about 25 years, so I've got my own style pretty well set. However, I will say that I have amazing writing partners that are always pushing me to keep up my level of vocabulary, description, sentence variation, balances between expos and dialog, things like that. Their writing is very good, therefore it pushes me to stay on their same level so that we both have a high quality writing experience, and for that I'm thankful because I don't write original writing anymore. I had some losses in my life all within the span of about eight months back in 2016-2017, and it really negatively affected me mentally and creatively. before that I would write 600-1000+ page epic fantasy novels and couldn't imagine a day going by without writing for one of my WIPs. But after that rough patch in my life, I just... weirdly lost the ability to do that. Even not only just writing novels, but short stories, fanfiction, everything just kindof stopped. I'm very sad about it, but it is what it is. RP is the only writing I do now, and... I've always identified as a writer. It's been a huge part of my life and I can't imagine not doing it at all. So for the past 6 years when I haven't been able to write original works anymore, I've been very thankful for and grateful to many of my rp writing partners for really pushing me to remain a writer and to keep up that level of creativity and productivity. So... thank you. I love you all. <3
If a reply isn’t coming easily do you draft it for later, delete and start over, chat with your writing partner for help, or something else?
If it's not coming to me easily, I might write a part of it or draft some notes about what I might want to do with it, and try again another day. If I'm really suck or I have a question, I will chat with my writing partner. But usually I can figure it out on my own, I just might need some sleep or to ponder things over music for a while.
Are there any writing elements that you sometimes find difficult? Monologues, character engagement, setting, progression, dialogue, other?
Yes, action scenes and fighting/battle scenes. I just..... I'm more of a visual person than a words person. I know. You're like buuuut you're a writer, haha. What I mean is... I tend to think visually and be inspired visually, so when I write, I'm picturing what's going on in my head. How the muses are standing, sitting, moving, gesturing, acting, etc. And sometimes I struggle with action or fight scenes because it comes out choppy or like I'm listing things instead of the writing just flowing. And then he did this, and then he moved here, and then he struck here, heh. It just... I haven't mastered the art of making combat and action sound anything other than a list of movements, and that sucks. Also.... s.mut. I just. Omg I'm so terrible at it. It comes out sounding like a bad adult film, like... hahaha, seriously, I'm just not good at making it sound classy, romantic, and creative instead of silly, crass, or again, just a play-by-play of movements instead of telling a story.
What subjects / genres do you find yourself becoming the most passionate about when you’re writing?
I really get into psychological things. My muse growing as a person, dealing with trauma, overcoming their own mental drawbacks, triggers, and traumas, etc. I find psychology fascinating, and so I tend to gravitate towards muses that have a lot of mental health issues, obstacles, or special circumstances, because I love to take them through constructive, healing, coping, therapeutic, or personal growth journeys. It's one of the most interesting things for me to write. I also really enjoy sandbox writing, which I don't get to do a lot of on this site because of how rp typically works. It's usually one on one with muses, or maybe a guest muse here and there, maybe two and two, but I really love writing a sandbox. What I mean is... you put your muse into my world with all my characters and I write everything and make a world for your character to get immersed in. Whether it's my own fictional world or a canon world from a movie or show, I love write multiple muses in that world to give you and your muse a "sandbox" feeling, kindof like when you play an RPG and your character can go anywhere and do anything and wherever they go there will be things for them to do and people for them to talk to. So it feels very open and expansive for the other person. I've done sandbox rps with my own fictional worlds with some of the muses on my multimuse blog, with the world of FFXII on Basch/Ashelia's blog, and with the world of Silent Hill, putting a muse of mine in there and you put yours in there and I write the town of SH around them. I ran a SH sandbox rp with Luther once and it was pretty cool. I'm a SH superfan and I get very into the creatures and the mythos of everything, so that's really fun for me. But a lot of this hasn't been recent, and unfortunately it didn't get very far.
Does fatigue affect your ability to write or do you always have energy for the grind?
Fatigue, my mood, anxiety, eyesight issues, etc. all affect my ability to write. And work and family drama drains me a lot too and can totally sap me of creativity. Years ago I used to have energy to write all the time, but not as much anymore.
Are there any genres that you will not write or avoid writing?
Not really? Other than anything that glorifies things I don't care for or that gets really inappropriate or uncomfortable in some way. I've shut down some anons on my other blogs who have asked questions about my muses that were really just not appropriate at all, and I refused to answer those questions. Other than that, as far as whole genres and things, I'm pretty much up for anything.
Are there any writing habits others may have that you find frustrating or exhausting?
I tend to gravitate away from people who overly punctuate and format their writing. You know, where every word is spaced out, bold, italics, bigger, smaller, colored, etc. and I just... can't make sense of it. It really distracts away from the writing and the story, and I prefer to avoid that. Having said that, if my partner really wants to do that and I like their writing and the stories we're creating, I'll deal with it.
Are you comfortable asking your writing partner to correct something in their reply if they got a detail incorrect?
Honestly, I usually just roll with it, heh. I'll change what I was going to do or retcon what I said to match so I don't embarrass them or because it's really not a big deal at all. If it is something that would really matter or that changes the story or affects my muse greatly, then yes, I will ask them to just confirm which way they wanted it or what it was supposed to be so that I know going forward.
When working on replies or drabbles, do you prefer a desktop keyboard, a laptop, typing on mobile, or other accessibility methods?
I don't have a desktop computer right now, I only have a laptop, and then my phone. Between those two, I vastly prefer my laptop keyboard. I'm old school, haha, so I grew up typing on a full-size keyboard. The laptops I get are fairly large because I need a lot of power and a bigger screen for work analyses and gaming, so the keyboard is full size. That's just what I'm used to and I'm a really fast typer, so that works for me. I get fat finger syndrome on my phone honestly, haha, and I spent more time fixing typos than actually writing if I try to use my phone for replies.
