IWTV S2 Ep7 Musings - Loustat: The Trial (Spoilers)

Imma split my Loustat musings into 3 parts, cuz there's A LOT to unpack. So I'll do the Ep3/4 & Ep5 revisits in the next posts; this is just general/initial Louis & Lestat stuff I wanted to respond to.

They beat the dog snot outta Louis, omg. They nearly snapped his neck! Louis was barely conscious, ofc his memory's spotty.

I LOVE how they're emphasizing the physicality of the Maker-Fledgling bond, first w/ Lou & Madz, now w/ Les. It's ofc all wrapped up in how much Loustat loves e/o, but its also their blood connection thru Amel. (I wonder how Louis Merrick'ing himself in Ep5 affects his connection to Amel if his heart didn't stop, cuz Armand stopped him from burning too much?)

And I love what Jacob said in the Insider, afterwards.

Fear that Lestat's come to exact revenge; excitement (a frisson of both negative & positive emotions, excited to see Les just cuz of the tension of having not seen him in so long, but also having all his nerves & senses tingling cuz of the tense anticipation & not knowing what to expect--hence: fear); fury cuz this whole mess could've been avoided if Les had told them WHY European vampires should be avoided at all costs; and relief cuz Les's' alive, his husband's ok.

But this time Lou KNOWS he's the real deal, cuz he can FEEL it--"it wasn't NOT his hand." And Dream!Stat jumpscare in Dubai, well well well; I thought Lou'd stopped seeing him on that Parisian bench? 👀

I was wondering how these frames would be used. It's about the Ep3 race riots and vampire loneliness, the night Louis left & Claudia was made. But I love the implications, cuz how could humans know ANYTHING about hows vampires feel--which is SO important when they start lying about everything else that went down with how Claudia was made and how it would affect her as a "defective" vamp.

Even the VAMPIRES don't know how other vampires feel, and the capacity they have for enduring--Armand said it over & over to Louis in Ep3 and Madeleine in Ep6. Lestat came closest in S1 when he commented on Claudia's eternally 14-yr old metabolism & needing to eat more than an normal vamp, but beyond that none of them had a effing clue what Claudia was going through. They don't know REAL loneliness, even with her diaries telling them what she thought, not HOW SHE FELT.

(And I'm reminded of what I said here about Gabrielle telling Lestat what her loneliness felt like. I think "vampire loneliness" is different for every vampire; which is precisely why Gab (and Claudia) was able to walk away from her Maker/son & live alone; while Nicky & Louis went crazy.)

Don’t Ship It

Why don’t you ship it? I have several reasons, which I will get into it, but I'm going to start with this one: I like a happy ending. Beejhawk cannot be a happy ending to me. I'm not entirely convinced any Hawkeye/4077th ship being endgame can be a happy ending, even the ones I like. I want to see Hawkeye move on from the war, which is what GFA is setting him up to do. Beejhawk keeps him stuck with the war defining his life. That's depressing to me. In the larger narrative of Hawkeye's life, it's important to me that the war is unimportant. The war being how Hawkeye met the love of his life gives me the ick. It implicitly suggests the war was somehow worth it. I can't think of a single reason why I would ship it. I think the biggest reason is it's simply too OOC for me. I cannot believe that Hawkeye would be in love with BJ. That is not Hawkeye to me. I actually can believe that BJ would be in love with Hawkeye, even though BJ is extremely straight to me, but I can't see Hawkeye reciprocating, ever. I've read some beejhawk fic and a lot of posts, and the way Hawkeye behaves and is characterized doesn't just feel wrong to me, it feels wrong in the way I hate the most. BJ is usually wildly OOC too. The other big reason is the complete lack of chemistry. They have negative romantic chemistry to me. This is a much smaller reason, but the things people get from beejhawk I get from other ships that make more sense to me. For a best friends ship, I have piercentyre. If I want to ship Hawkeye with someone repressed, I have hawnk or houlihawk. Sometimes I joke about this but it's kind of true that I don't need beejhawk because I have hawnk. The Joke Is Wild? Hawnk did it first. I genuinely do not understand why beejhawk is a ship at all, except that they're the two main guys. If I didn't know how slash culture worked, I would have been shocked that it even existed. In the last few seasons, I'm not even convinced they like each other. I found myself asking "do these guys even like each other?" about the alleged best friends more than once, and I had to actively rev up my suspension of disbelief to enjoy their goodbye properly the first time I watched GFA. I very strongly dislike any framing of MASH as a love story, and I have yet to find beejhawk content that doesn't turn it into the Ballad of Hawkeye and BJ. Piercentyre is fun for me, because it really changes the show very little. Beejhawk requires me to rewire the entire show, and I don't want to. A lot of moments that I adore become less meaningful to me if they're shippy. For example, Where There's a Will, There's a War. "When I wake up remind me to give you a kiss" is an expression of BJ's profound relief and a wonderful resolution to the anxiety and guilt he's been feeling for the whole episode. It's hyperbole that only works because they don't normally kiss or want to kiss. It always brings to mind a lyric from a song about WWII: "and I never kissed so many men as on that afternoon." It's not about romance, it's about being glad to be alive. I just like the show better without beejhawk. I started out a little more neutral and my visceral revulsion built through overexposure. There was also an assumption that you shipped beejhawk that I really resented. Especially because of the implications around it being slash. I am gay, I ship gay ships, I ship other gay ships in MASH. I don't ship beejhawk. I'm not required to ship every single gay ship. So all those beejhawk posts about "gay people love this" or "gay people think that" bother me and turn me off even more.

What would have made you like it? Completely different acting/chemistry. Something completely different from what I ever see the fandom do with it. I could probably be sold on unrequited (BJ's side only) or unhappy ending beejhawk in fic if it was really well done. This is your chance to plug! I think a realistic handling of it would help too. The show gives me a BJ who is as far from leaving his family as a man can be. I need to be convinced that something would change that. Meta claiming he's actually close to leaving in the show does not work for me, it directly contradicts what I see. I need writers to dig into it. Actually show me the dissolution of BJ's marriage, the pain and consequences. Show me how he manages to stay in his daughter's life, if he does. Brokeback Mountain does not shy away from how badly Ennis treats his wife and how absent he is to his children. My experience with beejhawk is that much angst is made of the obstacles to their being together, but they're quickly dispatched with. Tell me what Hawkeye sees in BJ, because I don't see it in the show.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? It inspired me to make these. I've been thinking lately that this lyric fits beejhawk "perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies." If you know me, you know this is something positive from me, because it's from what I think is one of the best songs ever written. There is some interesting potential. Just get out of the true love box! Try something dark, something one-sided (BJ's side), something that ends badly! I do really like their friendship in the first few BJ seasons.

time for some Eddie pov 👀👀 ft. Eddie's gay awakening

Eddie Munson misses Steve Harrington. And Eddie Munson might hate himself a little bit, too. That’s the only reason he can come up with for this self-imposed isolation, some complex kind of self-sabotage. Sometimes he thinks he hates Steve Harrington, for making him feel like this, for forcing him to do this to himself. He knows that’s stupid, though, because Eddie Munson loves Steve Harrington.

Love and hate are two sides of the same coin, isn’t that how the saying goes? Eddie thinks he understands now. Feeling for a person so strongly that you’re not sure what you’re feeling anymore. I love you. I hate you. I hate you because I love you. It’s all Steve’s fault, really, for making him love him. It was hard to tell when it started, though, because Eddie had always kind of admired Steve, he was a good-looking guy. But he was pretty sure he fell, and fell hard, when Steve started caring.

Steve always cared, in some way, because caring for people was practically his default setting. But Eddie had known that he’d made it into Steve’s inner circle when he started really caring, personally and fervently. It was the same feeling as walking into your favorite coffee shop and being able to order “the regular,” the feeling of familiarity, of belonging. He knew he had made it when Steve remembered to order him a large fries from the pizza place, because it was the one time he allowed himself to splurge. He knew he had made it when Steve correctly guessed three different songs when they went for a ride one night, like he had been studying or something. When Eddie had jokingly asked him if he had, it was a delight to see him turn pink and hesitantly deny the accusation. Eddie loved that he cared. That fucker.

Because now he has to hate him for making him love him, otherwise it’s very possible he’ll implode. He’s trying to flip the coin, because Steve made him love him, knowing he’d never love him back. Eddie’s gone down that road enough times to know the only way to protect himself is to flip that love to hate.

The first time Eddie fell in love with a straight boy was freshman year. He hadn’t had many friends in middle school, a broken home life plus a small town had made him an outsider from early on. Lucky for him, Hawkins High had kids from Hawkins and their neighboring town, so there was a host of new faces that hadn’t known him long enough to hate him yet. Among these faces was one Eddie came to be particularly fond of— Caleb Montgomery.

Throughout middle school, Eddie had just thought he was a late bloomer. Sure, he grew like a weed, his voice dropped, but he kept wondering when the whole “liking girls” thing was supposed to kick in. Evidently, it never did. Eddie had always admired boys, but he thought it was the same thing as girls looking at models in magazines and saying, “God, look at her! I wish I had tits like that.” In his mind, admiring people was totally fine, as long as you weren’t, like, weird about it. Then came locker rooms after gym class, and Eddie quickly took to changing alone, in a toilet stall. He finally realized why the whole “liking girls” thing never kicked in.

Enter freshman year drama class. After realizing that fading into the background wouldn’t make the bullies go away, Eddie began to take their perception of him in stride. He created a kind of alter ego, someone supremely confident to the point of being untouchable. Someone overly dramatic. So he joined drama. He acted “The Freak” well enough he thought he might as well give it a shot, and besides, he figured he’d much prefer the kinds of people he met in drama class to the ones he’d meet in shop. It turned out he really did, especially when that kind of person turned out to be Caleb.

The two got extremely close extremely quickly, and Eddie got maybe a little bit too attached. He didn’t mean to get a crush on Caleb, but once he realized what was happening it was a little bit too late. It was embarrassing looking back, really. How clingy he got, how often he tried to pass it off with phrases like “attached at the hip” and “brotherly bond.” He was fifteen when he figured out he was gay, but he had learned to hide it way before then. He wasn’t as good at hiding it as he thought, it turned out, because by January Caleb had stopped inviting him over as often, and by February Caleb was pulling him aside and telling him to ‘cut it out, you’re being really needy and weird. Just leave me alone for a bit, okay? you’re kinda creeping me out.’ Though not so eloquently put, the words had stung. So it turned out the stereotype about drama kids wasn’t always true, but at least Caleb wasn’t nasty about it. They stopped talking, but at least he never told anyone else. He still gave Eddie a small perfunctory smile when they passed in the halls, and by the time they got to senior year, Eddie was dreading telling his uncle he had failed half his classes and would have to repeat, but at least it would mark an end to the painful half-smiles and the crushing guilt that came with them.

Since then, Eddie has dedicated himself to making sure it never happens again. Whenever he feels himself getting close to someone, he makes sure to pull away first, for both their sakes. He hates that he has to do it to Steve, because there was something about him that really was just different,but he knows it’s for the best.

Ugh I hate being reminded that he exists but Leiv S is a pedophile, yes. Many are pushing the trans agenda because the narrative of children being in control of their sexual identity and orientation will pave way to introduce the ideology of children being able to consent to sex to be widely accepted. He’s just one of many but I do appreciate how he gets shamed anywhere outside of the Hollywood bubble. I’ve actually noticed how so many of these “Hollywood” people are getting more shame for their antics as they should

I have gotten dreams before of the western entertainment industry on fire so I think it will collapse as the truth will be revealed.

Agents of SHIELD Rewatch Season 3A (ep. 1-10)

Here's my commentary on my rewatch of Agents of SHIELD Season 3 Episodes 1-10. This may not be the best commentary since these are just the thoughts and opinions that come to my mind as I watch the episodes rather than a full-blown analysis, but I'm just having fun with it!

3x01 Laws of Nature

Can’t wait for more no lighting this season!

JOEY aka Marvel’s actual first on screen openly gay character. POC LGBTQ+ character to mention. Do wish they did more with him though. Love him.

Very beginning, and the government already wants to use lethal force against innocent, scared, and confused people.

Though I will admit, Fitz’s field skills have improved well.

Kinda hate how no one talks to Fitz and confronts things he might be doing wrong because they don’t want to have that confrontation. Mack and Bobbi just choose to not talk to him about it. Maybe that’s why he is so much worse in season 4/5.

And I get wanting Jemma back. I have no doubt in my mind that Daisy researched the monolith for months and tried everything she could to get Jemma back. I just hate how much praise Fitz gets for being single minded.

“Only love can make a man so stupid” I don’t disagree. But there’s a certain level with Fitz that I just had to laugh. Also I’m willing to argue obsessive more than love.

I wasn’t a big fan of Rosalind at first, but she became a fun character.

Coulson and Hunter is always a fun duo. They bounce off each other so well.

Every time the power flickers at the hospital, I always just think about the people on life support lol😅

Also was Lash/Andrew specifically going after Lincoln. Because of his connection to SHIELD, I feel like he would be a no no target.

I get why people are upset with how Lash looked, but given that’s it’s an actual costume and not CGI, I think it’s pretty impressive. That’s just me though. Honestly, doesn’t take much to impress me.

Here is the scene of a major red flag for Fitz. Totally disregarding Daisy’s health. She said she can hold it for maybe a minute. She holds it for too long because Fitz is single minded and cares for no one else but Simmons and himself. Again, I want Jemma back, but not at the expense of another. Daisy could have had serious brain damage or other injuries due to her powers. She also doesn’t have her gauntlets, so her arms are being damaged as well.

I feel like this scene lasted longer in canon time but for screen time, it was about 3 minutes long. Again, Daisy said she could only hold it for 1 minute. Fitz totally over exerted her.

Will doesn’t deserve to hate he gets. He literally did nothing wrong. He protected Jemma and helped to keep her in check and not lose her mind. He truly is an amazing guy.

Also Jemma does not deserve hate for falling in love with Will. She didn’t cheat on Fitz, they were never a couple. Jemma deserves to be happy and if she was alone on a planet, she deserves someone like Will. Also they were together for six months. That’s enough time to fall in love with someone. This episode shows some of the fandom’s true colors and how they view women compared to the men on the show. Yes, I am calling this out.

Also, what’s so wrong about Jemma just wanting to be best friends with Fitz? She doesn’t owe him romantic feelings just because he feels that way about her.

I love Daisy’s discipline in this scene. It’s short and small but it’s very telling of her character development. Her instincts turned out to be wrong, and though she was so sure, she accepted it and it moving on the working the problem.

Also, Fitz trying to find dirt on Will is just gross. Not only does it show something about his character, but it shows how he doesn’t trust Jemma about what she’s saying about Will.

Another reason why Daisy was right all along. Putting inhumans in the gel matrix is in no way more humane than what SHIELD is trying to do. SHIELD, well at least Daisy, is trying to educate people and help them understand their heritage and powers. Daisy wants to help others better themselves. Putting people in involuntary comas is not making them better. It’s also taking the choice to learn and grow away from them.

I really feel for Coulson, I really do, but he went off the deep end and not in a good way. I understand wanting to get information on Ward, but interrogating the og team, making them open up about uncomfortable things.

And then there’s Daisy’s interrogation. He’s quick to accuse Daisy of being able to forgive Ward despite knowing all that Ward had done to her and how she will never forgive him. Did we just forget about the kidnappings? Kidnappings! Plural!

Again, a character going off the deep end and acting on emotion and being excused for it, but the moment Daisy goes off the deep end cause she’s drowning in guilt or when she’s in charge, making emotional decisions, she’s ridiculed. No, I will never stop talking about it.

once again an episode that made me absolutely lose my mind!!! kp are so in love and they finally said it!! although, i would have liked it better if they said it to each other in private first but oh well can't have everything. and porsche is officially a stay at home wife i love that for him. the scene when p was drying kinn’s hair though, it was the softest shit i have ever seen in my life <3 i also loved the scenes with taytime they are always so good i wish they had more screen time. 1/4

and we got the kimchay breakup :/ i was expecting it but it still hurt. I still have hope that they will end up together. however, the most important part of this episode (for me) was vegaspete!!! god these two make me go insane. the way we went from sadistic torture to that convo at the end. bible and build's chemistry is actually unbelievable i can't get enough of these sick motherfuckers. and don't even get me started on the cinematography like the lights and the shots and just the whole atmosphere it was so good and so sexy and I’m gonna need 3-5 business days to recover. that preview was the final nail in my coffin i don't think i can wait a whole week for more. I’ve read some metas about them but honestly I don’t even care if vegas changes for pete or not. their relationship is so fucked up on so many levels that I don’t think it can really be redeemed. certainly not in 3 episodes. and honestly does he need to be? can’t he just stay the fucked up villain that he is? i had quite a few issues with it (be warned there are a lot of spoilers ahead, also as always this is my opinion, if you liked the show good for you)

1. the plot was something

let’s start with victor’s storyline: i love the idea of showing a teenager figuring out his sexuality, because honestly victor is barely 16, i didn’t know shit about my sexual orientation when i was 15/16. being unsure and figuring all that out is, in my experience, a very universal part of coming out. the majority of us didn’t know and accept our sexuality until later in life, not many people just know from the moment we were born

but him figuring out he is gay was so obviously written for a plot twist and not because the writers genuinely wanted to portray a teen struggling, everything about victor and mia’s relationship was only added to give the audience more drama and cheating. maybe it was because the whole show was advertised as a show about a gay boy but his feelings for mia never felt genuine, he wasn’t actually exploring anything, he was just using her as a beard

it could have actually worked really well if he ended up being bi, bisexual men exists, just something to consider for hollywood

speaking of mia, I’m just going to say mia deserves better, and god pls don’t make her date that awful jock next season

victor’s parents, idk, their affair subplot thing was fine i guess? i didn’t like either of them particularly plus i hate how the season ended on this cliff hanger. though i love the dig at simon’s perfect parents because yeah some parents aren’t like that, most people’s parents probably aren’t like that, i think most of us have heard our parents make gay jokes at least once in our lives. but then again i don’t think we necessarily need a show aimed at teens to show us more negative examples of coming out because we know coming out is scary, we need more encouragement and less anxiety, thank you very much 

overall, every single plot point felt very much like “this happens and then that happens and then this happens and then this happens”, there was no connection, it often just felt like a random order of events

the ending. i just, who came up with that needs to take a timeout. not just was it rushed as hell, it was also so disrespectful to so many characters, pretty much every character, at the same time, and what is it with america and everything culminating at prom?? 

2. the characters were underdeveloped

victor: on paper a Puerto Rican queer main character is awesome, honestly ground breaking, but after watching 10 episodes i still don’t know if i hate or love the guy, he is both a caring person and really selfish and a dick, there is just no consistency, or at least i didn’t find one

benji was.... a character? i still don’t know much about his personality, i guess his personality is being gay? and he drew victor that one time, and he makes coffee

all of the other side characters were so bland, the only character i actually ended up caring about was victor’s sister pilar, i propose mia and pilar start dating in season 2, now that would be a subplot i can see myself be invested in

in general the focus of the show was very much on the straight characters, they should have worked more on giving more nuance to victor’s inner turmoil and confusion, and less on whatever cliche thing lake and that other guy had going on

3. other things that happened that I want to mention

that episode in new york had some of the worst editing i have ever seen in my life.... i thought disney had money, but they apparently didn’t care to spend any of it on this tv-show (no wonder since they knew gay people would watch anything about gay characters) but i did love the flatshare, can we get a show about them?

why do straight writers think being gay makes it okay to cheat..... pls stop making gay characters cheat on their partners, it perpetuates very toxic stereotypes, it’s not romantic and cute 

the show overall was so cheesy american, like literally every cliche you can think of happened in this show

TL;DR this show is very underdeveloped and some things are so painfully cringey to watch, i’d say it’s not the worst show i have ever seen but 1) the movie, while not perfect, was a lot better than the show and 2) i wish disney had given a spin-off to andi mack instead, or continued that show because tj and cyrus had a lot more development and nuance than whatever happened in love victor. or better yet, disney should have adapted leah on the offbeat, give me two bisexual girls falling in love, you cowards

opinions are always subjective, i don’t want to discredit your feelings at all. no opinion is worth more than another, and if you liked and connected with the show good for you

i personally didn’t like it at all. they included too many overused tropes, stereotypes, and triggering content. and sure, a typical american show isn’t necessarily bad. even a typical disney show isn’t always bad, look at andi mack and hsmtmts, two rather recent disney shows that have cringey writing and the typical disney-aesthetic but are imo rather positive and fun shows with serious topics, good representation, and character development

love, victor on the other hand wanted to combine disney-cringe with being a CW gay coming of age drama which ended up being such a clash of writing styles that simply didn’t work for me. they thought they were being forward-thinking but somehow managed to include so many cliches common in gay media (eg. having a beard, cheating, being outed, homophobic parents), while also constantly side-lining the gay puerto rican main character’s development for the sake of giving the cishet white side characters more screen-time... why i ask you, why did felix and lake get more development than victor and benji? couldn’t they at least have given pilar an interesting fleshed-out side storyline instead

i’m also not a fan of the “dating a girl while knowing you’re gay” trope. i thought in the beginning it was done rather interestingly. victor wasn’t sure of his sexuality and that is so valid, especially at his age (but really at any age) and figuring out your sexuality is great. i do wonder why they couldn’t have decided to make victor bisexual, male bi rep is definitely very uncommon and for a while i thought we were heading in that direction, i would have applauded that. but it turns out victor pretty quickly figured out he is gay but he kept dating mia for the entire season??? he was using her and that is not okay, no matter how scared you are to come out. not to mention that these types of storylines always shift the focus of the gay character coming out away from the gay character and onto the question “how will the girlfriend react” which is super iffy because coming out is not supposed to be about anyone but the character coming out

i have to mention the last episode. it was a trainwreck. not only was victor publicly outed multiple times within a short amount of time but they also end the whole season, the entire arc of his coming to terms with being gay and coming out, on a cliffhanger. cishet writers should honestly not be allowed to write gay seasons anymore because the majority of them will never understand that coming out is scary, no matter how loving you parents are you will always have a tiny voice inside your head that tells you they won’t accept you. they turn victor’s coming out which is a pivotal moment in a gay person’s life into a cheap suspenseful writing technique, made even worse by the fact that his dad is homophobic and his mom is hyper-religious. not getting to see their immediate reaction can be very triggering to their young and closeted lgbt+ audience, young lgbt+ kids need reassurance that coming out will be fine, we don’t need to turn our real life fears and uncertainties into cishet suspense fantasies. being gay isn’t supposed to be the plot-twist you can end your season on

so yeah... not really a show I personally will rewatch or recommenced, but to be completely honest I’m not the biggest fan of becky albertelli’s books and writing in general so i expected the show to be a hit or miss for me and sadly it ended up being a miss (though I did rather like the movie love simon, I thought it was cute)
