10. what is the worst part of fanon?

‘the class system is good, actually.’

as someone who is also annoying, vaguely sinister, and spends a remarkable amount of time with the dead (because i’m a doctor, rather than a serial killer, i promise), i am one of lord voldemort’s ride-or-die girlies. what i am not a ride-or-die girly for is the tiresome pro-aristocracy fanon which infects so many death-eater-centric fics.

the sacred twenty eight is not real (it’s a pisstake of things like debrett’s), lucius malfoy doesn’t have a seat on the wizengamot, when sirius says his parents thought being a black made them ‘practically royal’ it is with utter disdain and not a statement of fact, aristocrats are not better or more special than people who are not aristocrats, just as purebloods are not better or more special than people who are half-blood or muggleborn.

class is the central theme of the harry potter series, absolutely - just as it is the central theme of pretty much everything in britain - but that doesn’t mean that glorifying it is good or enjoyable or a way of sticking it to jkr. if you meet real-life aristocrats, they’re almost exclusively all cringe. don’t give them a veneer of being sexy and fun that they don’t deserve.

ron being written as dumb or abusive.

ron is incredible and i love him. he’s emotionally mature, kind, obviously a wife-guy, clever, a big-picture thinker etc., and i hate when he gets turned into a violent boor just for being a dick about viktor krum (he was acting up because he’s bi and he fancied krum, for one; hermione is just as bad about how ron acts around fleur and lavender, for two).

i especially hate it when he gets turned into a violent boor to enable hermione to run off with either severus snape or draco malfoy. two men whom i always associate with the phrase ‘not prone to jealousy’...

I’ve noticed that with a few fanfics I’ve read of Drarry / Harry and Draco friendship with eventual Harry and Snape mentorship, it always goes like this

The story takes a canon scene of Harry and Snape going at each other’s throats and rewrites it so that both characters are not at fault and it was instead someone else’s doing* Example: In canon Snape has to teach Harry Occlumency, but the two of them are too stubborn and blame the other. In fanfic it’s rewritten as both not at fault due to a misunderstanding and it’s someone else’s (usually Molly) fault.

I don’t see the fandom complain about this all too often and even praise the authour for “redeeming” Snape and how it “fits well with how I perceive him in canon”. Even though it’s a complete twist of canon to bash another character who had no part in the original scene.

But if the same story has a Draco redemption, even if the story adds in few minor details not backed by canon, it’s mostly based on canon - such as him being raised to be prejudiced and forced to do evil things under a evil character or gives him the benefit if the doubt for being a child. Or it could simply just be Draco apologising and learning to better himself. Apparently that’s not OK and you must use canon.

Like, we get it. You hate Draco. It just tells me that that person cares less about hating bullies and just using that as a “valid” reason to hate Draco, when actually they hate him because the fandom loves him.

(btw, not trying to say anti Draco are always pro Snape - they may simply just like how he was written in that particular story. Maybe they just hate the character used as a scapegoat - Molly bashing is very common. I think some of them may not be Snape fans, they just hate Draco and don’t care if any other bad character got rewritten as a good person. I’ve seen Voldemort be rewritten as sympathetic - again, no canon backing, and the same story having Draco as such is wrong.

Nothing against Snape or other characters. I’m just tried of the blatant hypocrisy.)

You say that with such causality that I can’t help but feel that you don’t know how a majority of the HP fandom reacts when one of us actually supports Rowling and her actions. She’s a shitty person who makes horrendous claims about trans people and donates money to try and make trans folks’ lives more miserable. Sorry that this doesn’t seem like a big deal to you. (<- P.S. I’m not sorry)

And to me this is even bigger given that you’re apparently a Snape fan, since, throughout all my years in this fandom, I have not once seen someone who loves Severus Snape while simultaneously supporting JKR. I’ve never even seen a Snape fan be transphobic until like two months ago.

I don’t expect anything, love. Choose your words more carefully. I, like you, have literally never seen your blog before, and when I saw a post you made about how some Snape fans are misogynistic towards Lily, I was taken by curiosity, clicked on your profile, and went through some of your top posts. Then I found one of your reblogs that seemed kind of pro-Rowling, then I saw it was tagged as “jkr” so I wondered if you had more posts about her. Then I find out you wholly support her. I told some of my friends and asked if they knew you and knew about this, and so on. I decide to make a call-out post to warn my Snape friends and my followers that one of us supports Rowling. No, I didn’t expect all HP fans to despise Rowling, I’m well-aware that some of us support her (and I click the block button faster than ever <3), that doesn’t mean I can’t warn my friends that there’s a radfem Snape fan.

And imagine thinking that just because you’re not the only radfem means that I shouldn’t be concerned. 💀 I’m shocked by how proudly you call yourself that.

Contrary to what you seemingly believe, I do not know everything about you or your blog. I do not know nor care that this is “one of your radfem sideblogs” (as if that’s somehow supposed to lessen it??), or that you’re barely active. You were active enough for one of your posts to appear on my feed.
