my vain hope for unsounded is by the end duane or really anyone has a long overdue epiphany that they shouldn’t have any allegiance to their country’s governing bodies. also that the military is fuckin evil
#the political scheming and dramatic irony of this story stress me out so much. it's infuriating#in which everyone is morally dubious and has committed at least one thing irreedeemable#duane is a tragic dad figure but he's also an asshole#who says things like In my country lying harlots have their tongues cut with the same blades used to neuter dogs#I think he's at the cusp of learning. it was at the 'you have always been a fine judge of character' moment.#technically quigley is already at this point but he. yknow. he is how he is#we know in at least alderode's army rape is a commonly accepted practice. so there's that#and duane had his little band of charming child soldiers. fun stuff#I'm already fed up with lem and he just showed up. he can take his sad crying-in-his-brother's-arms flashbacks and shove it#I know a big central theme of this story is that everyone has their own motivations#and thinks that they're in the right when they are from the outside so clearly undeniably wrong#people will profess a moral code in one breath and slaughter innocents the next. so much prejudice so much brutality#hypocrites everybody#sorry I read all of it in a week#and I only understand maybe sixty percent of it#unsounded
