I guess you haven't seen the extra comics yet. Izutsumi likes to nap on people (not in a lewd waay, regular cat way) but she is picky about who she naps on. Chilchuck is the chosen one even though he is not comfortable with someone using his as a mattress.
Don't have a link to all the comics but here is her rating for everyone plus some doodles from Kui herself.

Found something more! Here is a image from the manga. https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonMeshi/comments/1crj3q4/incase_youre_having_a_bad_day_remember_that/
I'm not caught up on all the extra material yet, so thank you for sharing. This made me giggle so much. I'm so happy this is canon. Even as I was typing that post I was thinking "there's gotta be a story there" and of course lore queen ryoko kui had us covered :'))
Also, important side note:

Ep22 gave me a small ulcer so I went down the rabbit hole of looking for the next chapters heh, read like 5 chapters after the current episode and then proceeded to look for the Adventurer's Bible, and while I've been told that stuff in it don't appear in the main story, I now have some screenshots of what stood out to me with no context just because-
1. Laios's social skills level. I feel so seen. I'm not alone
Tumblr media
2. Falin. Senshi thinks she looks so like Laios. That's it.
Tumblr media
3. Very important expression by your 29 yrs old half-foot. I can never resist his annoyed faces honestly idk
Tumblr media
4. "A mere 20 years"
Tumblr media
5.
Tumblr media
Also, Laios and Senshi straight up thinking of Izutsumi as ''cat" and Izutsumi thinking of Tade as the one with horns while Tade thinks they're friends, lol;
Tumblr media
Bonus
I've seen lotsa ppl talk about Mayjack Chils but listen Packpatty is just exuding youngest child
Tumblr media
Bonus bonus
Smiley eyes Senshi. Very important.

Some viewers are saying that a story of revenge is too tropey and Phi/Non endgame is “too predictable”. But there are so many twists and turns that I’m surprised every week and I gave up guessing; ANY outcome/explanation for ghost/mundane murder-fuckiness makes sense. DFF is basically a choose-your-own adventure. I personally love revenge stories because it’s so satisfying when wrongs are righted. I really hope we see Phi/Non reunite; I will lose my shit (again) if that turns out to be the case - just like I lost my shit with the reveal that they were lovers. Please start a PhiNon Supporters club where we can all wear matching membership bracelets!
Anon, one of the major reasons I'm enjoying Dead Friend Forever, which in its current moment in the story is not very enjoyable, is because all theories are possible. I agree with you that this is really choose your own adventure!
If you are defending Fluke, skip to page 87! If you ship Jin x Phi, go to page 129. If you think Tee should be spared, flip to the end. If you think White is an innocent bystander, stay on the current page, but if you think he is New instead of Tan being New, go to page 95. If you think Phi is actually the worst offender, move to the next chapter. If you want to know who Perth is in this story, keep reading!
Tumblr media
I'm scrolling through the tags enjoying each person's take and desires for the series because they are all different. And, of course, some people aren't enjoying the series, which happens with all shows. Others feel it's predictable while you and I think this could end six different ways. Like you wrote, any outcome is going to make sense to me because every action up until this point has made sense to me, (except Fluke cancelling the Uber). The conversations are all over the place and about twelve different things. I LOVE IT!
Tumblr media
Also, as a person who actively maintains a Grudge Garden and a Petty Prison where I nurture my grievances against shows, I think disliking a show for trivial reasons is acceptable. If people hate the idea of Phi and Non being together in the end because it feels predictable to them, that has nothing to do with me and how I'm interacting with the show, so I remain unbothered by it.
Tumblr media
But as for what I am concerned about, if Dead Friend Forever and BOC wanted to sell merch from this series in order to raise funds for upcoming projects (praying 4 Minutes is Bible x Fluke, amen), a simple red bracelet would be the only item I'd need because this Phi x Non ship ain't sailing itself!

Feel free to ignore this, but I love reading your analysis and was wondering how you start analyzing things? I try to do it myself but I always feel so unconfident in my interpretations and feel scared about posting about them and them being “wrong.”
Just curious to see how you approach your analysis and meta! Have a lovely day!
Ooh, what a good question! I'm happy to share a little, sure.
Under the cut bc it got long hehe 😅
So my first (and probably the most important) response to this is: it's hard to feel 100% sure that you are totally "correct" about this stuff.
There are always going to be other ways to interpret things. There are things you miss, or perspectives you don't consider. There will always be people who disagree. And even if you are as accurate and totally convincing as humanly possible, there always going to be different types of analysis that you can't cover all at the same time!
I think, especially when it comes to like, doing casual analysis for something you love, it really helps to just follow your passion. It's fine to speak confidently about an interpretation that you find compelling, even if you haven't considered every possible angle of how it could be wrong. It's about what speaks to you, after all.
For instance, the conflict-avoidant Falin post (which is currently the analysis post of mine with the most notes) was largely born from an interpretation of Falin that really resonated with me, based on a couple of points I remembered strongly from reading the story. It's definitely not the only way to look at Falin, and I don't think it's like the universally correct interpretation of her character. But it is the interpretation that got ME interested in talking about her, and in turn, resonated with other people, too!
I have plenty of anxiety about this stuff, so I won't pretend that it's just easy to turn off that "what if I'm wrong, though" part of your brain, but I will say it doesn't hurt to try to start writing. You can always draft a post and come back to it, or delete/private it, or reblog it later to add more context or nuance. You aren't shackled to your opinion forever, much as the internet (and anxiety) can make it feel that way.
As to where to actually start with analysis... for me, it's almost always either a detail, a question, or both.
Here's an example of an Idea In Progress I've been thinking about.
While I was grabbing screenshots from the Nightmare chapter, I noticed that Marcille's hairstyle there is similar to one of the chapter covers I'd also just looked at:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So like, that's interesting to me! Especially since the cover was from the chapter where Marcille makes her deal with the Winged Lion. So then I can start to ask like... what does it mean that there's this similarity? I could tie it in to the way I think the Lion kind of infantilizes her, talk about what influence the Nightmare chapter might have had on Marcilles decision. Alternatively, I could ask, are there any other similar times Marcille wears this hairstyle? Any other hairstyles that are repeated at key times?
Any of which could lead to some fun analysis! Alternatively, it can also just be fun to post about the detail without the analysis. Just be like, "hey, look at this weird thing." Other people might chime in with ideas about it, or maybe it will sparks something for you later! Either way, you'll have an easy reference saved for reference. Even if deeper analysis doesn't come, it's still fun to have pointed out. Details and connections are just. They are just great. And Dunmeshi especially has SO much to dig into.
(Oh, also, quick aside here: ignore anyone who tells you the details don't matter and weren't intentional. It fully does not matter. If drawing a connection helps you realize a new meaning in the story - if it inspires and motivates you - it's worth investigating.)
Anyway, the Adventurer's Bible is also a great place to find details to jump off of. The timelines and little blurbs highlight important events or facts about the characters, and you can then go fishing for other times those things come up or are referenced in the story.
In terms of starting from a question, it can also be fun just to spend a little time with something you don't feel like you totally got. I had a great time doing that with the succubus chapter, for instance. If there's a scene you find yourself kind of skimming over because its not clicking for you... go back and try and examine it! Even if it's just a small thing - an expression you missed or a panel with a funny little joke - it can be just as rewarding to try and pay attention to the parts of the story you don't understand as it is to dig into the parts you do.
~
Really, in a lot of ways, I like to use analysis as an excuse to just spend time with a story I care about. It's a way to savor it! And if you can write up those thoughts and ideas, you can share them with others, which can be even better. A dish doesn't have to be perfectly cooked to delicious, after all. Go, with Senshi's blessing, and make good food.
And of course, as with all things creative, never forget about Two Cakes:

This idea is probably too ambitious for me to carry out at the moment, especially with Art Fight and this one particular WIP I haven't finished... But I recently finished reading Dungeon Meshi (haven't touched the Adventurer's Bible or the prologue chapters yet). Highly recommend! But finishing a manga like that has been filling me with the itch to draw comics again.
If or when I have the time to make a comic, I'm thinking of doing a lil' series called "Lessons in Lore" (current working title, may change later). It'd basically function as a lore dump + a chance to see more of Mufotsuki and Piripu's dynamic. The first chapter I have in mind revolves around why candles are used as currency.

do you have any character analysis posts you're working on? i'm currently mulling Daya/Dia over in my head right now. In general, I'm thinking a lot about Kabru's team because they don't show up much in the manga and won't be in the show much longer as noticeable players, but have quite a bit of outside-the-manga content to comb through. Personally, I like the idea of Rin and Dia becoming friends with Marcille post-canon, but I want to know them better first. I know Rin pretty well already. 1/2
(for example, Rin/Dia/Marcille seem to like clothes, and i want to draw them clothes shopping.) And I ask this not to put all the work on you! I want to discuss these characters with somebody, and you're one of the only ones I can think of who enjoys doing in-depth dives into the side characters of Dungeon Meshi. You, summerboletes, shisurus, and ambrosiagourmet are some other blogs i can think of that made great meta posts. You can reply to this privately if you want! 2/2 (think about it. daya has a boyfriend and marries him post-canon. marcille loves romance and loves clothes. it'd be adorable if she helped daya find a wedding dress. like kabru introduces them and dia (god i'm so used to writing 'daya') mentions her wedding and marcille immediately pounces on her with eyes sparkling in excitement. i plan to write this fic one day)
This idea is so cute! I’ll also check out those other blogs you mentioned when I have the time to hehe~ I do latch onto minor characters easily but it doesn’t mean I have much to say about everyone. Dia (agreed btw, the situation with Daya vs Dia is confusing)… I do like her, but I feel like her Adventurer’s Bible profile sums it all up quite nicely and straightforwardly honestly. You’re right though her reaction to the treasure bugs was so cute and honestly surprising considering her appearance and demeanor, she does like pretty things and jewelry I could def see her going shopping. More content of her would definitely be fun, I’d read your fic!! I do love imagining how everyone’s relationships are like in Kabru’s party, the intricacies of it… I haven’t mulled it over enough though. I’ve been thinking of Mickbell more because of recent posts though, also Rin… If you’d like, the dunmeshi discord I’m in would be a good place to brainstorm about it I think! Hmu for an invite if you want
Summing up the posts I’m working on was long so here’s a cut out of mercy
I have 78 drafts on tumblr currently oh boy… The thing about my process is that I ramble easily but then I need to compile panels to illustrate the points and that’s real tedious… Character analysis wise - I’m most hyped about a Falin one on the topic of if she’s a people pleaser, how much does she care, what’s her way of thinking etc etc, also her differences with Laios because I hate seeing people seriously say they’re the same person. - Also a Cithis one that I just need to streamline at this point. I want to analyze her demeanor, poke at her psychology and analyze her relationships, she’s fascinating. - Oh I’m so stupid I almost forgot to mention the one I’ve been working on currently about Thistle, the age shenanigans but in an in-world way where yes it’s wonky and it means something. He hauntssss me I have so many thoughts on Thistle & Falin lately. Like, offtopic for the analysis but… Falin loves nature and Thistle is named after a flower… Imagine her post-canon coming across wild thistles and feeling a rush of fondness and she doesn’t know why… Thistles have thorns but they taste sweet… Peel of his thorns and eat him pls.
I have more Chilchuck & family thoughts coming, and more Toshiro & family, but these will have more of a casual brainstorm & speculating tone to them, I also just need to streamline these… Like I am obsessed about Toshiyuki and Chilchuck’s alcoholism I’m sorry
Beyond those the topics of the character analysis become more specific, like - How much social awareness does Laios have? Not none, not a lot, but the specifics can be blurry in ways I think are interesting, he was sensitive to people’s judgements in his hometown after all, and he does worry about others’ perception of him… He does know that buzzcut guy was taking advantage of him, etc etc. - There’s an extensive one I want to make on how the winged lion reflects abusive relationships, like how he targets all his ‘meals’'s specific weaknesses and draws out the worst in each of them. A lot of Dunmeshi is about unity and overcoming prejudices & differences & flaws and forming deep and long-lasting bonds despite it all, and amongst all of it it’s like… How flawed relationships with flawed people can still be made into somehing good and healthy that make the world brighter… Except the winged lion there to represent abusive relationships which you need to fucking DITCH, lol. - And on the topic of Dunmeshi & relationships I want to talk about it and queerness, especially in the queerplatonic sense of blurring lines, and Izutsumi + Laios’ relationship to touch should feature in those.
And my crown jewel but I’m soooo hyped about the Marcille & Chilchuck’s arcs one I’m working on it’s gonna go over so much stuff I’m obsessed about, like the importance of books in Marcille’s life, what the succubi reveal about the characters in what ways, the theme that’s so prevalent in Dunmeshi of idealization, Marcille’s imagery as a dungeon lord, a shepherd a general a princess a monster a damsel a woman in mourning…
But that’s enough for heavy ones, side characters wise: doing quick posts like for the gold-stripper characters has been great, but those usually come to me on the same day that I post them. I might make some analysis posts on say Mickbell or Holm or Otta, but I don’t have the thread I want to follow yet. Flamela’s been on my brain so much too…
Mostly though there’s just a lot that I wouldn’t write analysis for, but that I’d love to explore in fanfics! For example, the hienbeni I want to write the most rn is about the surges of anger that Benichidori gets, impulsive and stressed out. I haven’t made a post on my Izutsumi & Benichidori brotp and all the interesting parallels I think I have, but I’ve written a fic on it! Same about Chilchuck’s daughters and their relationship with his alcoholism, etc. I explored the guilt and confliction he may feel about his wife in my fic Enough as well, etc etc. You can see my fics here! For Kabru’s party lately mickrin has been having a chokehold on my brain, I’d love love love to explore Rin’s and Mickbell’s characters and issues through fics for them. As I think you might have figured, I love to explore characters through the lenses of relationships they have with others (Cithis & Mithrun and Pattadol, Thistle and Falin, etc), and that’s why for example I love to make posts that pitch ship ideas, I think specific dynamics can really have a lot to say about either characters. Oh another one’s toshimari, I want to make a fic about them and their feelings of being foreigners and not being able to integrate well to The Island, through the plot of them going to a restaurant as coworkers and the food they eat there~
These are only the ones I have at the top of my head though………. Someone help me Hopefully this post wasn’t boring lol, but yeah those are my wips rn. Need to make posts on toshimari, kabushuro, cithaios, cittadela and ships like that I think have interesting potential too. Many of these I’ve mentioned here I’ve had in my drafts for like 6 months btw gdvd 😭

I saw a poll a while back that asked about how many books you'd read, and capped it by saying that long fanfictions didn't count as books. As one might expect, the comments and reblogs were abound with people upset with that addition, but honestly, that was the least interesting part to me. I'm going to get into some probably controversial opinions here, so if you have strong opinions on anything book or reading related, here's your fair warning.
I doubt anyone will deny that fanfiction counts as reading, but I view fanfiction as a separate medium to books and original fiction, especially as it exists in the current context. We can argue about the Aeneid being fanfic, or Chaucer, or Shakespeare, but while those were derivative works, fanfiction as it exists nowadays is different. It's generally a singular work, made for a very small audience of fans who want to seek out extensions of or changes to the work they love. The Aeneid wasn't produced for the love of the game, Dante wasn't writing the Divine Comedy because people were hankering for more Bible content. Fanfiction isn't books in the same way that musical theatre isn't books -- it's a different medium.
But then, are plays books? As I said, musicals are a different medium, and if I go to Shakespeare in the Park to watch Much Ado About Nothing, I haven't read a book. But if I read the Penguin Books publication of Much Ado, have I read a book, or have I read something else? Antigone was produced for the Dionysia over two thousand years ago, it was never meant to survive for this long. If I read the Theban Tragedies, have I read a book, or have I read something else? Have I read three something elses?
Arthur Conan Doyle wrote dozens of Sherlock Holmes stories, many of which were originally published in magazines. A magazine isn't a book, so what makes a short story collection of those adventures more of a book? If I read a compilation of Sophocles's works with all seven surviving plays, and then I read a compilation of just the Theban tragedies, how is that two separate books?
Most of my interest these days is in ancient Greek works. And the Iliad and the Odyssey were originally orally transmitted. They were never meant to be books, so why are they the foundation of European literary canon? I own four copies of the Odyssey, three copies of the Iliad, and two copies of the Aeneid. All of them are different translations. I consider them to be different books. The story is the same, but the words are different, the translator's notes are different, the introduction has changed from author to author. Homer is responsible for the Iliad, but he didn't write it. Who did?
Are audiobooks reading? Audiobooks are certainly books, but I would consider them listening, and not reading -- which doesn't make them less book! And I get why people would consider audiobooks reading, because the medium is the same. The format is different, but the medium is still book. It's still literature.
But there's always edge cases, I think. If I ask you how many books you've read this year, and you're a parent, would you count all the picture books you've read your kids? What about comic books, or graphic novels? What makes a book a book?
The answer, I think, is different for everyone. But the conversation will always be more interesting to me than the conclusion.

Hey all, I'm Katrina, a long time Tumblr user who thought it was overdue I actually made a Writeblr for the original works I'm writing. What works, you say? I'm glad you asked! We'll get there shortly.
First, a bit about me. I've been a writer for 30+ years, but have never actually pursued something that would be printable. If I ever do publish, it will be Indie (unless there is a drastic change in my life and the industry) and probably alongside a Patreon setup. Right now, I'm writing the first book in a planned out tetralogy, and intend to post snippets here and in full on Royal Road when it's in a state I'm comfortable with.
I primarily write science fantasy / soft scifi with low fantasy aspects. This runs the gamut from post-apocalyptic rebuilding, adventures in space, and time travel just to hit the highlights. I'm also rolling around the concept of a couple things that will either be LitRPG or Gamelit depending on how certain details pan out, regarding a somewhat fantasy-esque MMO setting and something else akin to a monster breeder game.
Like the sound of my work? Give me a follow and read about my current projects under the cut. Are you also a creative? Pop in my ask and let's talk about our projects! I'm eager to make friends.
Tumblr media
My biggest project is undeniably the Luica Universe, which promises to contain multiple series under the same banner. The four book series I'm working on now - tentatively four, it might need tweaked a little bit but I won't know until I'm further along - is Luica: The Forgotten. I am currently working on Book 1: The Cure.
The Cure is a post-apocalyptic soft scifi adventure that takes place over a thousand years after world altering events that made Earth uninhabitable for human life. While the descendants of the survivors are recognizable in many ways, there are things about their society that are very different. As of 6/8/24 The Cure is:
Fully plotted
15.5 chapters
35,000ish words
Somewhere between 1/3-1/2 completed
Tied to a loosely structured digital story bible
The other named works I'm currently working on are Rewind and Legend's Legacy.
Rewind is loosely plotted - all the main points are there, but it's a matter of getting from one to another. Originally laid out as a piece of interactive fiction (using Twine) I did determine that this would make a better novel.
Rewind is an interesting work in that there is not a single time travel event, but one used repeatedly. It straddles the fine line between soft scifi and fantasy, set in a different, earthlike world with fantastic items and detailing, but with recognizably human dynamics between characters. As of this point, Rewind is in the plot / worldbuilding stage.
Legend's Legacy is the could-have-been-an-MMO story whose mechanics have been adapted from a lit rp group that I never actually put out to the public. It will either be a crunchy LitRPG story or a much softer but still dynamic gamelit story. The theme, as you may guess, is legacy and will sprawl over generations of character arcs and smaller plotlines to achieve a bigger picture. This one in particular is for Royal Road and I intend to have it develop as a much more lengthy adventure than the others.
Legend's Legacy sits in the worldbuilding stage, not yet having fully advanced to plot.
Tumblr media
And that's it for my currently progressing works! Others are percolating at the moment - the other books in the Luica Universe / The Forgotten Worlds have some planning in varied detail, but the way I write it's better to keep it loose until I get there. XD
Interested in any of this? All of it? Hit me up! I'm generally slow to respond to instant messages but I plan to keep a close eye on my asks. Looking forward to meeting you!

books i read in sept 2023
Tumblr media
[these are all short + casual reviews - feel free to ask about individual ones if u want my full thoughts or ask for my goodreads!!]
sometimes u travel somewhere where u have a relative lot of downtime + no data and u reinvent urself as a person who reads
she who became the sun (reread) + he who drowned the world - shelley parker-chan ★★★★★ (historical fantasy)
i reread swbts before tackling hwdtw and the way that this duology is so emotionally devastating! big win for readers who are fans of characters tearing the world apart in their grief and then realizing they cannot live in their new world! and the insane gender goodstuff, of course. ough. will think about this for a while
into the riverlands - nghi vo ★★★★★ (fantasy)
excellent third entry to the series that felt more fun than the other two thus far - i love playing around with myths and legendmaking
[reread] raven quest - sharon stewart ★★★★★ (adventure)
really happy to find out that this book from my childhood absolutely holds up. tightly plotted and paced and really poignant. i love animal adventures <3
the last devil to die - richard osman ★★★★★ (mystery)
no more withholding 5*s from genre fiction!! this book made me tear up for real so even though a silly murder mystery is probably never going to change my life, we have to give credit where credit is due. the most character-focused entry of the series so far and it definitely shows!
war of the foxes - ricahrd siken ★★★★☆ (poetry)
individually less interesting but collectively more coherent than crush. it's cool to have a conversation with a bit of poetry standing in a field, and I do love a good metaphor
the paper menagerie - ken liu ★★★★☆ (sci fi short stories)
great collection to go over slowly - i suspect it might have felt a bit tedious reading it front to back in a sitting. i liked how chinese a number of the stories felt. lots of ideas to chew on!
the poisonwood bible - barbara kingsolver ★★★★☆ (historical)
i just know this book went crazy in high school english class! it has themes and motifs and characters to compare and contrast! there's so much rich ground for analysis. and also treating characters like a bizarre personality test (the avenue of entertainment i chose). fantastic book to chew on and i greatly enjoyed talking to people about it
carrie - stephen king ★★★★☆ (horror)
yeah, i get the hype! this is a book that's impossible to read divorced from how deeply it's ingrained in current popular culture, but it stands up beautifully for itself. i'd love to read more analysis of it that puts in the cultural context of the 70s
hotline - dimitri nasrallah ★★★★☆ (historical)
surprisingly kind and hopeful story, definitely lovely if you want something feel-good. i really enjoyed how the occasional french was threaded into the english, it felt very montreal to me
the monstrumologist - rick yancey ★★★★☆ (historical horror)
tremendously gory and often unsettling. i found myself surprisingly attached to the characters and all the historical affectations of the book - it's not a series that i'm itching to continue but it was a good read
hark! a vagrant - kate beaton ★★★★☆ (historical humour graphic novel)
skimmed through parts of this but it was a fun read from cover to cover. always entertaining to see the origins of some very famous internet memes and there are also some hidden gems!
dead silence - s. a. barnes ★★★☆☆ (sci fi horror)
the author writes a very good spooky ship and very mediocre everything else
the word is murder + the sentence is death + a line to kill + the twist of a knife - anthony horowitz (-★★★☆☆+) (mystery)
decent murder mystery series. the author self-insert is goofy, the random homophobia is persistent, but they're quick and easy reads that go down like junk food
all that's left in the world - erik j. brown ★★★☆☆ (post-apocalyptic romance)
genre-mash that just didn't quite work for me. the tonal shifts between "fluffy gay YA romance" and "the world has ended post-apocalyptic bleakness" were jarring and the book never felt like it cohered into anything meaningful

it's been almost two months since i read dungeon meshi
and the fact that i'm still thinking about and obsessing over it says a lot. i have found a new favorite author in ryoko kui. she is so incredibly good at storytelling, character creating and world building (the daydream character design sheets, the adventurer's bible as well as the monster facts) and she's also probably the funniest human on the planet! i have never laughed out so loud and so often while reading a long running series. i've also read her collection of short stories, terrarium in drawer, and it currently stands as the single time, in my life, i've ever actually enjoyed the entirety of a short story collection. it's such a perfect example of kui's complete skillset. and going back to dungeon meshi, the fact that you can just read it as some silly little fun story about these weirdos and their adventures, but also as a tale of desires, rejection and otherness, love and hate that support and feed off of each other and so much more, is so telling of the mastery of kui's writing skills. people have given such interesting takes of this manga and i think that goes to show how balanced this story is. we're told a lot in order to keep us engaged, but also not so much that there's no room for speculation or analysis.

Jeezus 49 powers is a lot of powers. Anyway once I read them all it’s over for u, but here are the first three Writer’s Asks from that ask game u reblogged!
Tell me of BEASTS, COSTUMEd in the DARKNESS hehehe
BEASTS: Who is your favorite OC?
This is not a fair ask. You are cruel. Cruel, I say. Carson is still a darling to me, but he's years in the past with the book never properly re-edited. I loved watching Sol grow up. Logan has my heart shattered into little pieces. I don't think I'm being vain to say they strike me all very differently. Let's I guess limit to current WIP: It might be Witness. I love how sharp and angry she is, but she has vulnerabilities and cares about others, and she just deserves so much love.
COSTUME: How much research have you done for your WIP?
Actually, not a ton. Somewhat easier for me because I'm making my own world. I did look up how fast a hot air balloon typically travels to try to scale the adventure during travel. And I watched a few videos on angels in the bible, to see how 6 wings can attach to a body. Besides that, this one was fairly low on research.
DARKNESS: Would you rather start a WIP with no plan, or with everything planned to the exact detail?
I can't plan things to the exact detail. I really can't. It takes away my will to write, since it feels like I got the idea out. I work better having a few scenes in mind, some major plot ideas for big picture, but only focusing on the part in front of me.

The Beginning
It's been about a month.
If you couldn't guess by my URL, I am a trans person (FTM) who is entering the HVAC trade. This is for a few reasons.
As the economic crisis rapidly sends us streaming forward toward poverty, my entry level job was not making us (my partner and I) enough money anymore.
Gifted kid burnout caught up to me a long time ago, and with the affordability of college being completely impossible without loans I would never have a hope of paying back, I turned to trades as an option of higher education without the ridiculous price tag.
I am more of a hands on person. Sitting down at an office desk was never for me, and I'm not sure why I ever thought it would be. I want to get my hands dirty, and have a new adventure every day.
Why HVAC specifically? Good question. I was interested in trades in general, how things work has always fascinated me. HVAC was a matter of elimination. Medical was not for me, blood and high stakes stress me out and the cost of those courses are very high. I've already flunked out of engineering classes in high school so anything related to it was a no go. Welding was another good option, but with loud sounds and bright lights my autism and bad hearing were not going to have a good time. The last two I was considering were HVAC and electrical. Each excellent fields and I had high interest in both, so I applied for EMT which is a combination of both (electrical mechanical technician, not the medical worker).
Now a new issue arose, one I have dealt with my whole life.
I am transgender.
The current trans panic, living in the bible belt, not passing well, and the already intimidating trades were a lot to take in a navigate, but I believe I have been very fortunate.
The first step was shopping around for a school and being very up front with how I identify and the situation. Emailing schools made it easier to imagine the school as an entity rather than a collection of people each with their own political views that make them view me very differently. I was ghosted by a couple schools, I am unsure if this is because of my identity or if they thought I was a spammer, but for my sake I'd like to think it was the ladder.
I managed to get pell grants, a few scholarships, loans that are far smaller than they would be for a four year degree, and finally an approved application.
The first couple of months were intimidating, there is a lot to learn in a small amount of time and a recent head injury was not helping. However, I do not give up easily. I found that passing had never been more important to me than ever, and I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps the far more masculine men around me make me feel more inadequate. Perhaps the trans panic has indeed instilled a terror in me of being clocked as trans far more than I originally thought. Perhaps it is simply paranoia and the unknown. Whatever the case, I've found myself taking more steps than I usually do to pass, including binding. I never really did befores since having covid binding has restricted my breathing when any strenuous activity is involved, my chest is not large to begin with, and the mentioned current economic crisis has made it impossible to save for top.
There have been a couple instances when I was misidentified as female, thankfully my voice saved me in that regard, but when I am stopped up due to the weather, it is not as convincing.
In one instance the wrong name was called (since I have been unable to change it) so I had to pretend like my name was simply not on the roster until I could correct the person in private, embarrassing everyone involved. My existence is very alien, so there is no system in place to change my name or inform staff other than by email or word of mouth. It is all very overwhelming.
Other than all of these moving parts, day to day has been very smooth. I can update in the future if there are any incidents or new challenges come up. Thank you for reading.
