What If Scenario. The Pandemic never happened, but the renovations at Her Majesty’s eventually did. During that time, they put together a concert-like production of Phantom like they did with Les Mis in 2019. Who would you have cast in each part? Feel free to include Ensemble & Understudies
I think I answered something very similar before where I said that I'd love to have had an international celebration, with recent, fan-favorite, or long-running members from productions all over the world given an opportunity to perform and do, like, one song each, along with the then-current cast at the time. So I guess it might be something like:
Phantom: Josh Piterman (London), Ben Crawford (Broadway), Derrick Davis (national tour), Osamu Takai (Japan), Alexander Goebel (Vienna), Colm Wilkinson (Toronto), Peter Karrie (Canadian tour), Peter Joback (Stockholm), Ian Jon Bourg (Germany), Anthony Warlow (Australia), Henk Poort (Scheveningen), Juan Navarro (Mexico City), Hans Peter Janssens (Antwerp), Tomas Ambt Kofod (Copenhagen), Hong Kwang Ho (Seoul), Juan Carlos Barona (Madrid), Sandor Sasvari (Budapest), Saulo Vasconcelos (Sao Paulo), Damian Aleksander (Poland), Carlos Vittori (Buenos Aires), Marian Vojtko (Prague), Stephen Brandt Hansen (Estonia), Ivan Ozhogin (Moscow), Ilkka Hamalainen (Helsinki), Adrian Nour (Bucharest), Nikola Bulatovic (Belgrade), Vladimir Grudkov (Sofia), Jonathan Roxmouth (World Tour), Espen Grjotheim (Oslo), Ben Forster (Greece), Killian Donnelly (UK Tour)
Christine: Kelly Mathieson (London), Meghan Picerno (Broadway), Emma Grimsley (national tour), Sae Yamamoto (Japan), Luzia Nistler (Vienna), Rebecca Caine (Toronto), Teresa DeZarn (Canadian tour), Emmi Christensson (Stockholm), Valerie Link (Germany), Ana Marina (Australia), Joke de Kruijf (Scheveningen), Irasema Terrazas (Mexico City), Inneke van Klinken (Antwerp), Sibylle Glosted (Copenhagen), Kim So Hyun (Seoul), Julia Moller (Madrid), Barbara Fonyo (Budapest), Lina Mendes (Sao Paulo), Edyta Krzemien (Poland), Claudia Cota (Buenos Aires), Monika Sommerova (Prague), Maria Listra (Estonia), Tamara Kotova (Moscow), Sofie Asplund (Helsinki), Irina Baiant (Bucharest), Mirjana Matic (Belgrade), Vesela Delcheva (Sofia), Claire Lyon (World Tour), Astrid Giske (Oslo), Amy Manford (Greece), Holly-Anne Hull (UK Tour)
Raoul: Danny Whitehead (London), John Riddle (Broadway), Michael Maliakel (national tour), Kanji Ishimaru (Japan), Thorsten Tinney (Vienna), Laird Mackintosh (Toronto), Kip Wilborne (Canadian tour), Anton Zetterholm (Stockholm), Nicky Wuchinger (Germany), Alexander Lewis (Australia), Peter de Smet (Scheveningen), someone who's not Jose Joel (Mexico City), Michael Shawn Lewis (Antwerp), Christian Lund (Copenhagen), Son Jun Ho (Seoul), Armando Pita (Madrid), Zoltan Miller (Budapest), Nando Prado (Sao Paulo), Marcin Mrozinski (Poland), Nicholas Martinelli (Buenos Aires), Tomas Vanek (Prague), Koit Toome (Estonia), Evgeny Zaycev (Moscow), John Martin Bengtsson (Helsinki), Florin Ristei (Bucharest), Slaven Doslo (Belgrade), Denko Prodanov (Sofia), Matt Leisy (World Tour), Carl Lindquist (Oslo), Nadim Naaman (Greece), Rhys Whitfield (UK Tour)
Is that way too many cast members? Probably! Are there even enough scenes for each of them to perform together? Unlikely! Did I give up doing supporting, ensemble, and understudies because it was too exhausting? Definitely! Do I even know who some of these people are or if they want to come back at all? Not really!
But you have to admit - it's a huge and very international cast!

Tracking every major 2018 NHL trade rumor heading into the deadline
Tumblr media
The NHL trade deadline is one week away.
The 2018 NHL trade deadline is rapidly approaching. On Monday, Feb. 26 the NHL will officially close its doors on trades for the remainder of the 2017-18 season, meaning we have two weeks of potential madness left.
NHL trade deadline day is usually not as crazy as the NBA’s deadline is, as most major hockey trades happen — if at all — in the days leading up to the deadline. The rumors, however, seem to churn out new names every day as we get closer to the Feb. 26 deadline.
As such, we’ve compiled a complete list of trade rumors from Feb. 1 onwards about the biggest names potentially hitting the trade market. We’ve already seen teams like the New York Rangers flat out admit big trades are likely coming as we head into the deadline, but teams like the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators will also likely be major sellers as their playoff hopes end.
Here are the latest NHL trade rumors
Feb. 23
Senators are in “massive” trade talks involving multiple teams for Erik Karlsson Ottawa has a “strong preference” to package Bobby Ryan with Karlsson. The Canucks are getting calls on Chris Tanev, but injury concerns limit offers.
Feb. 22
“Every team” asks about Nashville’s Eeli Tolvanen but he’s not available. The Maple Leafs are not on Ryan McDonagh’s 10-team no-trade list. The Blue Jackets have initiated extension talks with trade candidate Jack Johnson. Vegas could be buyers at the trade deadline. The Canadiens are in “no rush” to move Max Pacioretty or Alex Galchenyuk. Jarome Iginla wants to sign with an NHL team before the trade deadline.
Feb. 21
The Blue Jackets have asked about Blackhawks’ forward Artem Anisimov. Erik Karlsson is “still in play” for other teams this month.
Feb. 20
Senators are trying to package Bobby Ryan’s contract in talks for Erik Karlsson. Another potential center target for the Penguins: Colorado’s Carl Soderberg. The Penguins have shown interest in Rangers’ winger Michael Grabner. Anaheim may be looking at winger Thomas Vanek from Vancouver.
Feb. 19
Boston does not want to trade top prospects or high draft picks for expensive rentals. Jets have discussed several forwards, including Chicago’s Ryan Hartman. Artem Anisimov, who has a NMC, hasn’t discussed any deals with Hawks management. The Penguins are also among teams interested in Derick Brassard.
Feb. 18
Detroit reportedly offered Petr Mrazek to the Flyers for a 3rd round pick. They declined. The Blues have inquired about Max Pacioretty from the Canadiens. Oilers forward Patrick Maroon is getting incredible interest across the league. The Rangers are looking to trade Nash, Grabner, Holden and Desharnais.
Feb. 17
Despite their denial, “don’t be surprised” if the Senators trade Erik Karlsson. Blues, Senators are in “serious talks” about Derick Brassard, Mike Hoffman. The Canucks have inquired about Max Domi, Tobias Rieder out of Arizona. San Jose may have interest in Bruins’ forward Matt Beleskey. Maple Leafs, Stars among teams who have inquired on Red Wings’ Luke Glendening.
Feb. 16
Buffalo defenseman Josh Gorges is available, and the Blues have shown interest. The Jets and Bruins are among teams interested in Patrick Maroon. The Rangers want Jake DeBrusk in a Ryan McDonagh deal with the Bruins. Rangers are more interested in players and prospects than draft picks. Blue Jackets are interested in Derick Brassard, but the “price is steep.” Penguins’ Matt Hunwick may be on the trade block with Ian Cole. The Maple Leafs and Stars are interested in Red Wings forward Luke Glendening. Stars deny reported interest in Glendening.
Feb. 15
The Red Wings are looking to move Gustav Nyquist and/or Tomas Tatar this month. Detroit’s Jimmy Howard has received more interest than Petr Mrazek from other teams. Kings are now shopping for a “mid-level scoring winger” after landing Dion Phaneuf. The Blue Jackets may be open to dealing young forward Boone Jenner. Radim Vrbata was asked to submit his 10-team no trade list to the Panthers last month.
Feb. 14
Rick Nash, Max Pacioretty, and Mike Green are among the NHL’s most coveted assets. The Panthers are a potential dark horse candidate for Pacioretty. Brian Gionta and James Wisniewski are hoping to sign NHL deals after the Olympics. The Senators are ready to listen on anyone but Chabot, Karlsson, and Stone. Ryan McDonagh has reportedly submitted his 10-team no trade list to the Rangers.
Feb. 13
The Jets are interested in landing a top-six forward before the trade deadline. The Coyotes aren’t shopping Max Domi, but they’ll listen to offers. Kings have “circled back” to Dion Phaneuf, Penguins interested in Derick Brassard. Penguins could be looking for fourth-line center, not a third-line center. There are 8-10 teams interested in Sabres winger Evander Kane. The Flyers may be in on a goaltender now that Brian Elliott has been sidelined with injury.
Feb. 12
Jeff Skinner, Max Domi among potential trade targets for the Colorado Avalanche. The Bruins are reportedly in on Ryan McDonagh, but does it makes sense? The Edmonton Oilers are maybe, possibly, thinking of trading Leon Draisaitl. Senators are talking Derick Brassard with other teams, but the price is high. Talks are starting to heat up around Golden Knights winger James Neal.
Feb. 11
Are the Penguins zeroing in on minor addition like Tomas Plekanec or Matt Cullen? Speaking of Plekanec, the Sharks are also reportedly interested in the center.
Feb. 9
The Red Wings may try to trade one of Petr Mrazek or Jimmy Howard this month.
Feb. 8
Stan Bowman says he doesn’t expect the Blackhawks to be buyers at trade deadline. Josh Leivo, Nikita Soshnikov, and Matt Martin may all be on the trading block.
Feb. 7
Will the Lightning chase defenseman Ryan McDonagh at the NHL trade deadline? Elliotte Friedman speculated on a potential Red Wings-Hurricanes blockbuster Could the Chicago Blackhawks consider trading Brandon Saad this season?
Feb. 5
The Rangers requested Rick Nash’s no-trade list, putting the winger on the trade block. The Avalanche are reportedly looking at Michael Grabner from the Rangers. The Predators have been “checking out” the Red Wings for scoring wingers.
Feb. 3
Josh Leivo has reportedly asked the Maple Leafs for a trade.
Feb. 1
The Canucks want to re-sign defenseman Erik Gudbranson, for some reason.

Today Scene Point Blank is excited to share a video from Howardian’s recently released new album The Silly Shit You Say. “Still Here” comes from Howardian’s sixth full-length, which came out on March 15 on Let’s Pretend/Starcleaner. “Leaving my old band and starting a new one inspired this song,” Ian Vanek explains, referencing his time with Japanther. “Exhausted and sad, my friend and bandmate Justin Mckaughan helped inspire me to start playing and releasing music right away. Mental Illness and late style art inspired the rest. Making songs and albums well into the future without regard for motives.” The video was directed by Mustafa Daka, who plays drums on the record. Schuyler Maehl, Scott Brummel, Justin Mckaughan, Flo Amarino, Gardner Allen and Farley Glavin also contributed throughout the process of making The Silly Shit You Say. Speaking about “Still Here” in particular, Vanek says: This honest tale of longevity in the face of change and growth embodies Howardian’s spirit. Picking up and moving on, despite it all, is a theme many of us need a constant reminder of. Still Here gives a voice to this journey and space to the traveler. The song stands out as one of the catchiest and saddest songs on the album, perhaps because of Flo Amarino’s accordion playing… In a way this song is about all of the other songs we’ve released. via Scene Point Blank music news feed

Injury Ward: Karlsson, Edler, Kadri, Letang, Hart, & Hall
Here’s the latest in the world of NHL injuries! Before you ask (and I know you were about to), the Jets haven’t provided us with a significant update on Dustin Byfuglien as this article is being written, so I recommend you follow me on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza to see his status as soon as it’s made publicly available.
Ryan Miller – The 38-year-old goaltender was originally slated to start on Monday against the Canucks, but a lower-body ailment kept him out of the game. This injury isn’t expected to keep him out for too long.
Ryan Getzlaf – The Ducks captain has been sidelined for the past three games with an upper-body injury. According to GM/coach Bob Murray, there’s no sign that Getzlaf is improving and his status for Wednesday’s game against the Blackhawks remains up in the air. Despite a disappointing 39 points in 54 games this season, Getzlaf still leads the team in scoring. That should give you an idea of how miserable this season has been for Anaheim.
John Gibson – Anaheim’s top goaltender could be available on Wednesday when the team faces off against Chicago. He had his wisdom teeth removed during the Ducks’ most recent three-game road trip (February 19th to February 23rd). If he doesn’t start on Wednesday, I’d expect him to be an option on Friday against the Golden Knights. Whatever the case, he should be able to contribute to your fantasy hockey playoff matchup.
Antti Raanta – Has been skating as he continues to recover from knee surgery. While Raanta isn’t expected to play for the rest of the regular season, if you’re participating in a playoff pool and the Coyotes make the playoffs – he might be an option.
David Pastrnak – Will be out for at least two more weeks as he needs to keep his thumb in a cast. After those two weeks, he’s probably going to need a short amount of time to get comfortable holding his stick and shooting the puck. Danton Heinen has been filling in for Pastrnak on the Bruins’ top line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, he has nine points in his last 10 games.
James Neal – Is currently week-to-week with a lower-body injury. He’s expected to be evaluated at some point this week, after which we’ll probably have a more concrete timetable for his return.
Micheal Ferland – Left Tuesday’s game against LA with an upper-body injury. No further updates have been released as of right now.
Justin Faulk – Left Tuesday’s game against the Kings with an upper-body injury. No further updates have been released as of right now. Did I just copy and paste Ferland’s update for Faulk? No. I changed ‘LA’ to ‘the Kings’. Okay?
Ian Cole – Has been skating in a non-contact sweater. With that being said, he’s dealing with a broken orbital bone (a bone which surrounds your eye) so the fact that he’s skating doesn’t exactly mean he’s about to return.
Ryan Murray – Is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. The Blue Jackets did acquire Adam McQuaid at the trade deadline, so maybe that slightly offsets the loss of Murray? Very slightly? Not at all?
Mats Zuccarello – Imagine what it’s like to put on a different jersey after nine seasons of being a Blueshirt. Imagine having an incredible debut with your new team, putting up a goal and an assist through 13 minutes of ice time. The next thing you know you’re doubled over after blocking a shot from Blackhawks’ defenseman Connor Murphy. Such is the life of Mats Zuccarello, who will be out for about four weeks with a broken arm. While he did have surgery on the arm, the purpose of the surgery was to hold the arm in place and speed up the healing process – this wasn’t some reconstructive surgery where he’ll need to learn how to hold a stick again.
Jamie Benn – He left Sunday’s game against the Blackhawks with an upper-body injury, which also kept him out of the lineup on Tuesday against the Golden Knights. Fortunately, he’s expected to return to the lineup on Thursday when the Stars take on the Kings. Benn has struggled to produce offensively this season with just 41 points in 61 games.
Thomas Vanek – Is expected to be out long term with a hip flexor injury. If you’re unfamiliar with the intricacies of the hip flexors (like I was until seconds ago), all you really need to know is that they allow the joint between your hip and your leg to bend. Since the injury is expected to keep Vanek out for a long time, it sounds like he’s dealing with a relatively large tear that’s going to significantly decrease his range of motion until it heals. Another important note – especially considering Vanek is 35 years old – is that you’re more likely to injure a hip flexor if you’ve injured it before. See how much fun this article can be when teams actually give us details on an injury? Three cheers for learning!
Jesse Puljujarvi – The belief is that he requires surgery for a lower-body injury. What exactly is he dealing with? How long will he be out? Find out in next week’s episode of ‘Spoiled Oil’ (copyright pending).
James Reimer – Looked like he tweaked something in his leg on Tuesday night against the Coyotes. No word yet on how long the injury will keep him sidelined.
Mike Matheson – Hopeful to return from a lower-body injury on Thursday against the Golden Knights.
Alec Martinez – Has been skating for the past few days as he gets closer and closer to a return. The team is hopeful to see him back in the lineup within the next week.
Craig Smith – You know what my favourite kind of update is? No update! At this point, all we really know is that Smith is dealing with a lower-body injury. Nashville’s acquisition of Mikael Granlund and Wayne Simmonds at the Trade Deadline should relieve any pressure of rushing Smith back into the lineup.
Will Butcher – Is day-to-day with a lower-body injury but he has been skating.
Jesper Bratt – Is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and won’t be in the lineup against the Flames on Wednesday. The Devils have been absolutely decimated by injuries recently. If you can name a player in the lineup who isn’t Nico Hischier, I’ll give you a high five.
Sami Vatanen – Will return from a concussion on Wednesday against the Flames.
  Kyle Palmieri – Out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Taylor Hall – The Devils expect to find out sometime this week whether Hall is going to play again this season. Considering the team isn’t playoff-bound, there’s really no reason to rush Hall back into the lineup and risk his long-term health. GM Ray Shero made it clear that if Hall does return this season, it’s because the team’s medical staff is absolutely confident that his return won’t have any long-term impact on his well-being. While it’s easy to say Hall should be shut down for the rest of the season considering there’s nothing left to play for, he’s a hockey player. Hockey players want to play hockey.
Carter Hart – The rookie goaltender is expected to be out for at least a week with an ankle injury. If everything goes well he’ll be back on the ice this weekend, with a return hopefully following soon after. Hart has been fantastic this season, sporting a .917 SV% and a 13-8-1 record.
Brian Dumoulin – Suffered a concussion after this hit from Wayne Simmonds in an outdoor game with the Flyers. No timetable for his return is available at this time.
  {youtube}Y5xxUAwDpF8{/youtube}
Kris Letang – If you watch the video above closely, you’ll notice that Kris Letang went after Wayne Simmonds following his hit on Brian Dumoulin. In an attempt to defend Simmonds, Shayne Gostisbehere came in and threw Letang to the ice. Letang suffered an upper-body injury following the takedown and is currently out on a day-to-day basis.
Bryan Rust – Left Tuesday’s game against Columbus on crutches after this hit from new Blue Jacket Adam McQuaid. He’ll be evaluated on Wednesday and we’ll probably get a better idea of how severe the injury is.
  {youtube}TOG5fIlExVU{/youtube}
Erik Karlsson – Left Tuesday’s game against the Bruins with an injury, but we don’t yet know if it’s related to the groin injury that caused him to miss significant time recently. What we do know is that he wasn’t able to put much pressure on his left leg. This clip from late in the second period shows Karlsson’s skating was not at 100 percent. He didn’t play in the third period.
Alexander Steen – Missed Tuesday’s game against the Predators because he was sick. Don’t expect him to miss too much more time as a result of the illness.
Brayden Schenn – Remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He’s expected to be back sooner rather than later. While we still don’t know exactly what the injury is and when he was injured, some believe it’s a concussion.
David Perron – Has been skating but is still officially day-to-day. GM Doug Armstrong stated that he should be back sooner rather than later. I feel like I’ve been saying his return is just around the corner for a long time now, but maybe this time it’s true?
Jake Gardiner – Has missed the team’s last couple of practices and won’t be in the lineup against the Oilers on Wednesday. Coach Mike Babcock has noticed Gardiner’s skating hasn’t been as good as it normally is. It’s possible he’s still dealing with back spasms that were bothering him earlier in the season.
Nazem Kadri – Skated on Tuesday for the first time since suffering a concussion. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: concussions are unpredictable because everyone experiences symptoms differently, so there’s a lot of variation in recovery times.
Alexander Edler – The Canucks begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday against the Avalanche and it’s still not clear whether or not Edler will be travelling with the team. While he has been skating, we still don’t know when exactly he’ll return from a concussion.
Erik Haula – May start skating soon! While that’s great news considering he had knee surgery a couple of months ago, I don’t think he’ll be back in time to have an impact on your fantasy hockey playoff matchup.
Josh Morrissey – Will be out of the lineup for the rest of February and the entirety of March with an upper-body injury. Once April rolls around we can start expecting a return.

The Hockey News’ 2018-19 Season Preview: Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets are under pressure to perform with the future up in the air for pending UFAs Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky, and Columbus has all the tools to seriously challenge for a division title.
The Hockey News’ 2018-19 Season Preview series dives into off-season transactions, best- and worst-case scenarios and one burning question for each team in reverse order of Stanley Cup odds.
Stanley Cup odds: 25-1
Key Additions: Riley Nash, C; Anthony Duclair, RW; Adam Clendening, D; Jean-Francois Berube, G
Key Departures: Thomas Vanek, LW; Jack Johnson, D; Matt Calvert, LW; Ian Cole, D; Jordan Schroeder, RW; Jeff Zatkoff, G
BEST-CASE SCENARIO With the Capitals nursing a Stanley Cup hangover and the Penguins looking a little vulnerable, the Blue Jackets have a legitimate shot at winning the division. Columbus has a top-flight defense corps led by Seth Jones (who will miss at least a month due to injury) and Zach Werenski, and the only subtraction was Jack Johnson, who was a healthy scratch in the playoffs. Sergei Bobrovsky has been excellent the past two years and is as close to a sure thing in net as any goalie in the NHL right now.
Up front, the Blue Jackets come at you in waves, led by left winger Artemi Panarin. There has been a lot of talk about Panarin’s unwillingness to sign an extension in Columbus, but he swears it’s not personal, and the Jackets could ride him to a strong season and long playoff run. Pierre-Luc Dubois came on strong in his rookie year and looks to be a true No. 1 center, something the Blue Jackets have struggled to find in their history. Rebound seasons by Boone Jenner and Alexander Wennberg make Columbus even tougher to handle, as does the addition of Riley Nash.
Coach John Tortorella’s style isn’t for everyone, but it has resonated with this lunch-bucket team. This is the year Columbus finally wins a playoff round.
WORST-CASE SCENARIO Forced into the reality that Panarin could be lost for nothing as a UFA next summer, the Blue Jackets trade him for dimes on the dollar. It’s a gut-shot for an organization unaccustomed to coming out on top, and the lack of a suitable replacement badly hurts the offense. Without Panarin, Dubois suffers a sophomore slump season and Wennberg confirms his ceiling is as a No. 2 center and no greater.
Werenski had shoulder surgery in May and the prognosis was a recovery period of up to six months. If it’s the latter, he doesn’t return until November and the team’s defense corps takes a hit. Ryan Murray could pick up the slack, but his own injury history, including a pre-season knock, makes him a question mark at any point in the season. Either way, the Blue Jackets will need unproven defenders to step up.
Bobrovsky, also a UFA to be, is elite, but the Blue Jackets count on him a lot, and any backsliding would really hurt. Plus, he’s been worked over in the playoffs and has just five post-season wins in his NHL career. The Jackets still make the dance, but fall to a more confident opponent in the first round yet again. That scenario destabilizes confidence in coach Tortorella and GM Jarmo Kekalainen.
BURNING QUESTION How will injuries to Jones, Murray impact the Blue Jackets’ start? There’s no worse break the Blue Jackets could have suffered ahead of the campaign than the loss of Jones, who underwent an MRI after a pre-season contest that revealed a second-degree MCL sprain. The recovery time is anywhere from four-to-six weeks, which puts Jones’ return at early- to mid-November. A month-plus without Jones, a legitimate Norris Trophy calibre defender, is a bad way to start the campaign, and his loss means the blueline is going to need to be shuffled.
Chances are David Savard moves up to the top pairing, with Markus Nutivaara and Adam Clendening taking second- and third-pairing roles. Making matters worse, though, is that Ryan Murray is also out of action, which means Gabriel Carlsson and Dean Kukan are likewise going to need to slide up the depth chart. One month or more with a jumbled up blueline is bad news for the Blue Jackets. That’s going to put a ton of pressure on Zach Werenski, who might not leave the ice until Jones returns.
If Columbus can’t stop the defensive bleeding caused by the injuries, it’s hard to fathom they’ll be able to start quickly. And if the Blue Jackets are behind the eight ball early, they’ll have some serious catching up to if they want anything better than a wild-card spot in the Metro.
THE HOCKEY NEWS’ PREDICTION: 1st in the Metropolitan Division. The two injuries on the blueline make for a bad start to the season for the Blue Jackets, but the offense should be able to keep Columbus afloat. Bobrovsky is a difference-maker, too, and if any netminder can bail out a wounded defense corps, it’s him.

Homeward bound: Star center John Tavares chooses Maple Leafs

Homeward bound: Star center John Tavares chooses Maple Leafs
John Tavares needed to post only one picture on his Twitter account to explain the grip the Maple Leafs have had on him since he was a youngster growing up in suburban Toronto.
The photo featured a young Tavares in bed, fast asleep on a pillowcase and under a blanket adorned with Maple Leafs logos, and accompanied by a note that read: “Not everyday you can live a childhood dream.”
In bidding farewell to the New York Islanders, where he was the captain and face of the franchise since being drafted with the No. 1 pick in 2009, Tavares chose Toronto and agreed to a seven-year, $77 million contract about an hour after the NHL’s free-agency signing period opened on Sunday. The skilled center was considered one of the biggest prizes on the market.
The 27-year-old Tavares spent last week assessing offers from with the Islanders, San Jose, Toronto, Dallas, Tampa Bay and Boston. By waiting until Sunday, Tavares gave up the opportunity to sign an eight-year extension with the Islanders. Tavares called his decision the toughest of his life in choosing between staying in New York or taking “a calculated leap of faith into an opportunity I believe will be special to me and my family.”
“The island, the fans, the organization, my teammates will always be special to me and my family,” he wrote. “But it’s time to live my childhood dream here in Toronto.”
Tavares’ average annual salary of $11 million per season is the highest signed by a free agent since the NHL introduced the salary cap in 2005. And his signing offsets the Maple Leafs losing forward James van Riemsdyk, who left in free agency to sign a five-year, $35 million contract to return to Philadelphia.
Van Riemsdyk is a five-time 20-goal scorer who spent his first three NHL seasons with the Flyers before being traded to Toronto in 2012. The 6-foot-3, 217-pound left wing provides the Flyers with more scoring punch on the power play and could be a long-term replacement for Wayne Simmonds, who has one year left on his contract. Toronto also lost center Tyler Bozak, who signed a three-year, $15 million contract with St. Louis.
There was plenty of moves around the league, including the Vegas Golden Knights signing forward Paul Stastny to a three-year, $19.5 million contract, though the Stanley Cup finalist lost free agent forward Dave Perron, who returned to St. Louis for a four-year, $16 million deal.
Veteran defenseman Jack Johnson is heading to Pittsburgh after agreeing to a five-year, $16.25 million contract. The 31-year-old Johnson is a 12-year NHL veteran, who spent the past six-plus seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Chicago Blackhawks made a splash by signing former Carolina starting goalie Cam Ward, forward Chris Kunitz and defenseman Brandon Manning. Ward provides the Blackhawks veteran insurance after starter Corey Crawford missed most of last season with an upper-body injury.
Tavares’ signing has the potential of turning the hockey world on its head, especially in the Eastern Conference.
He joins a young, talented group that already features Auston Matthews, the 2016 draft’s No. 1 pick, a veteran presence in Patrick Marleau and a top coach in Mike Babcock.
The Leafs, who haven’t won a championship since their last Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1967, have made strides in three years since Babcock’s arrival. Toronto has made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, after qualifying just once in the previous 11. And yet, they’ve not advanced past the first round since 2004.
The Islanders experienced struggles even with Tavares by qualifying for the playoffs just three times in nine seasons.
Now they face a daunting uphill climb minus their unquestioned leader and point-a-game producer.
In a bid to retain Tavares, the team underwent an organizational makeover in recent months. They hired Lou Lamoriello as president of hockey operations and fresh Stanley Cup winner Barry Trotz as coach.
“The New York Islanders would like to thank John Tavares for everything he has done for the franchise throughout his nine seasons,” Lamoriello said in a statement released by the Islanders.
“We wish him and his family all the best.”
Other notable deals:
—The Colorado Avalanche added two former Columbus Blue Jackets in signing defenseman Ian Cole and forward Matt Calvert to three-year deals. Cole gets $12.75 million and Calvert gets $8.4 million.
—The Buffalo Sabres filled a need at goaltender by signing former St. Louis Blues backup Carter Hutton to a three-year, $8.25 million deal. Hutton will share the starting duties with Linus Ullmark, who is pegged to make the jump to Buffalo after three seasons in the minors.
— Detroit agreed to sign goalie Jonathan Bernier and Thomas Vanek. The 29-year-old Bernier signed a three-year contract after going 19-13-3 in 37 games with the Colorado Avalanche. Vanek signed a one-year, $3 million contract to return to the Red Wings, where he spent a portion of the 2016-17 season. Vanek opened last season with Vancouver and closed it in Columbus.
—The Arizona Coyotes signed All-Star defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson to an eight-year contract extension that averages $8.25 million per year.
—The San Jose Sharks announced a $64 million, eight-year extension with center Logan Couture.
—The Lightning signed defenseman Ryan McDonagh to a seven-year, $47.25 million extension, which kicks in next summer.
—The New York Rangers agreed to sign restricted free-agent forward Vladislav Namestnikov to a two-year, $8 million deal.
