So I just read this great post by @kittyandco and it struck a really, really deep chord with me as someone who was also in the selfship community in ye olden days (as in, pre-pandemic olden days).

Now, don't get me wrong, those days weren't perfect either. I still experienced hostility for little reason, and it still hurts me to think about and affects my ability to trust people to this day. And I sure as hell wasn't the only one, or the one who had it the worst. But that lack of good faith that used to be the exception really does feel like the norm now, and it makes interacting way more stressful than it ever was back then. You're expected to read novella-length DNIs and can't interact with or follow anyone without fearing that you missed one of your fandoms on their DNI list and will get shit for it.

(And those pages are often confusing to navigate and use hard-to-read colors, to boot. Seriously, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines should be mandatory reading for anyone making a Carrd or Rentry account)

And that's not even to mention the fear of what you say to someone in a private conversation getting twisted and shared and vagueposted about without your permission. That's something I've witnessed happen to multiple friends of mine. Again, isolated incidents back then, way more common than it should be now.

Meanwhile, *old woman voice* back in my day... What I always think back to was the really popular ask game that would go around, where you could ask whoever reblogged it to come up with headcanons for your F/Os. And people were sending each other asks left and right! People were excited to look up F/Os they'd never heard of to come up with a little pick-me-up for the person in their ask box! And I remember them being a blast to read and write!

Nowadays? If your F/Os are from sources that's not in the media zeitgeist or another limited set of perennial sources people will generally know enough to engage with... Good luck getting anyone to talk to you. (And that definitely goes double for anyone who ships with characters who aren't white men or isn't white themselves, that's a whole other issue that I've definitely experienced as a lesbian.)

I think it's both the growing atmosphere of hostility and social media in general's growing focus on "making content" and "branding" that keeps people from reaching out to each other unless they ship the same kinds of things they do. It's not really a community anymore. And that sucks, because that's a problem that's infected selfship spaces from the social media landscape as a whole

But I think we could still make the choice to see each other as people. Because, at the end of the day, selfshippers don't really have anywhere else to go. We're all just a bunch of people who carry love for characters in our hearts. Shouldn't we be willing to extend that love to each other, too?

(Obviously, this comes with caveats. I don't know if this is just me and my friends, but it also feels like we're all just too tired nowadays to reach out or meaningfully engage with other shippers' work. I'm definitely guilty of going MIA for long periods for that reason, so I'm not going to act like the lack of interaction with my blog specifically isn't my fault there. But in my experience I've seen a lot of that exhaustion come from this, from the walking on eggshells and the lack of reciprocity of the energy you put in, so it all still applies)

You know it's rare for me to openly speak out on a topic such as this, I've, legit only ever drawn attention to my stance on things like this literally only once, like, like ever I think?? Cause someone asked but like-

Could we just let, people, like things?? Like y'all, I, everyone who is ever in a fandom, especially for selfshipping, you, do know we're all basically playing with evolved stages with our imaginations, that which does not affect the real world like, whatsoever??

If you like a villain character, you can write how they legit loathe everyone else but you, that they're the softest around you, and would raze the entire world if it meant that you'd be smiling and all theirs.

If you like a character that happens to have a sexuality pertaining to the gender you're not, you can just CHANGE IT so that it does involve you, if you love the character, it is JUST A FICTIONAL BEING, do the things that make you happy! That make you comfortable, that is fitted for yourself, hence the term "selfshipping", it shouldn't be a concern or worry to anyone else about how you go about, what you want to do to a character unless you share your love to the world.

Take it from someone who has been harassed before over an incredibly stupid list of things, (villain characters, age difference as my f/os are much older than me, bi erasure??? yeah okay), let people, just, be, people, it's not hard to do - if you don't like something, don't look at it, and leave the person alone-you're not saving a fictional character who's gonna somehow thank you if you call out something that you don't like personally, you just look like a prude who has control of a keyboard and taking advantage of anonymity as long as it lasts.

Live by the creed of, "if they're not hurting anyone, if they're not hurting living, breathing people, then do what you want."

And while I kinda prefer not to sway over to a label in the selfshipping community, proship people you are ALWAYS safe here on my blog, gush about a character, talk to me about it, I welcome it.

This will never be an area where happiness is forbidden or talked down upon. Fandom areas are, oddly enough very dangerous which is so, bizarre to me, that people get that insanely mad over someone just trying to enjoy the piece of media they are.

Okay but does anyone talk about making your ocs into your f/os? I haven't looked too deeply but I barely hear about it.. And all about how extra special that is? There's no room for doubt since they're yours, you don't have to worry about sharing them if you're uncomfortable with it and anything you think about is canon!

People who ship with their ocs are just as valid as those who ship with characters from media.

And of course, if we want to get meta- imagine how they react to learning that you created them, how would they react? Would they be angry if you've given them tragedy or would they be glad that you've finally given them solace?

The sort of deepseated loyalty that parallels that of a nun, you are their god, after all. Or how that you cherish them so much you decided to actually love them, no matter how angry they are initially, they can't shake off that fact.

Y'all I've come to a conclusion that seeing self ship doubles MAKES ME MORE SAD THAN SEEING CANON X CANON SHIPS-

Like bc- they actually dont bother me THAT much, I think of them more like a 'alternative cursed universe where there could always be a posibillity for crazy stuff' ship. Yk, like, how there COULD be an alternative universe out there where every president of a country have to wear a maid dress or something idfk-

BUT THE FUCKING- ... DOUBLES...

It actually really really breaks my heart... Almost like I'm watching a "thief" take away my most valuable treasure, yk... No offense to any doubles out there, you're valid, and you're no thief, you cannot choose who you love.

But I dunno... I also am very scared of "shadowbanning" in the self ship community... Like VERY scared.

With "shadowbanning" I mean, there being some bigger, more popular users on social media who are famous for being the (character's) spouse. The character we both self ship with. But of course, the popular one is going to gain much more attention and interactions because they have been self shipping for longer time, or their art/ s/is are very popular and likeable.

So, if I tried to break the ice through and consider myself the (character's) spouse, and share my self ship stuff on the platforms, I would be DOUBLE IGNORED, and FORGOTTEN above all.

And I cannot have the same mindset with the canon x canon ships, because I know that person DOES exist in real life. And that they the character much longer than me... And have merch... And celebrate anniversaries... And treat the relationship as a real one.

It's literally like a war... where the more 'loved' one wins.

Don't get me wrong. I ALSO want to do that form my own f/os. I WANT to build the a shrine, I WANT to treat my ship serious, I WANT to draw us, and to gather merch, I WANT to love my f/os as much as I feel love for them.

But sometimes, people are not able to fulfill their needs because of the situation/environment they're in.

For example, they could either be financially unstable, the country they live in has no 'merch' of the said media, the family is unsupportive and abusive, or just... Be VERY busy with life in general. Not being able to give attention to even the smallest things, like stuff they love to do in free time, let alone their beloved f/o.

.. I myself am in that situation. My country is poor, I am about to enter university, I am still healing from my past traumas/trying to get better and fight off the problems on my own, even if it is VERY difficult, and no one understands. I should already work and have a job, have MY money, ACT like an adult should, and become independent. But I am not. I was emotionally scarred, which left big impact on my (concerning) social, (terrifying) future, and (nonexistent) work life.

I basically depend off my parents, and know absolutely nothing in general, like- I feel hopeless, dissapointed. Scared above all. Because I think a part of me is still not ready to move on and grow up, and I already did.

So, if I cannot take care of MYSELF, how can I take care of the sacred relationship me and my f/os have, love I feel for them? The attention I oh so, DESPARATELY want to give them, yet I don't even give attention to my life, and try to hide away from everything? How can I even think about them if I cannot think about anything else?

... I dunno. I'm just... I just sometimes think I am underserving of such recognition, and to be called the (character's) lover/friend/family. Because, not do I "ignore" us, but I ignore my life, too.

With ignore, I mean, I TRY to survive every single day as the best I can. Get over it, then repeat again. For quite some time now. Cope with "stress" (when there IS NO actual stress) with unhealthy maladaptive daydreaming methods and isolation. And the stress is just... Life, in general.

Being a depression survivor is hard, because you're supposed to find a purpose for yourself, when you didn't even PICTURE yourself being THIS far. Keep going, while you're actually still somewhat struggling to find the path, and will to continue.

You isolate yourself from the world in your mind, your safe, comfort zone. Where anything good can happen, there's no stress, no duties, adultery, no work. You ghost people, avoid everyone and everything, stay in your home, and LITERALLY survive the day to the best of your abillity. Try to avoid thinking about ANYTHING else but you, your f/os, your perfect little world. You struggle with most simple things like getting up, eating the right ammount, doing things you like, taking care of yourself, but you're supposed to be an ADULT. To already KNOW how to take care of yourself, because FAR more worse things are waiting for you out there.

I love my f/os. But I don't love myself, what I have become. And that is what makes me worried the most. I cannot become what I want if I already act this terrible.

I am not comfortable with characters that have canonically assaulted someone, are predators, or child abusers.

You unnecessarily dictate how others write characters, especially asexual ones (pointing out the use of bad stereotypes is not this and completely understandable).

You are not plural safe. (BTW I use the term plural, please use this term, not D.I.D). I have a zero tolerance policy for not only people that are negative about/to plurality and systems, but also people that misuse plural experiences for their own entertainment. Some examples would include:

Featuring characters doing things very similar to "switches" because you find it funny/to show they're "mentally unstable".

Have your character talk to "people inside their head" to paint them as crazy.

Treat an evil alter ego or persona as another personality.

Painting alters or alter equivalent characters as evil.

That shit isn't for your singlet characters and it definitely isn't for your "crazed" or "violent" characters, and alters deserve to be treated kindly.

There is some media I am uncomfortable with and I will block you if your F/Os are from these sources: SAO (sword-art-online), R/ayman, J/ekyll and H/yde, and H/arry P/otter. (These medias make me uncomfortable for one reason or another it's not always for moral reasons, please respect that even if you don't understand).

Other wise we should get along just fine!

🚸 - What are/were they like in school?

Ah, well... Now a days he seems to be rather enjoying school life. He spends most days off campus, exploring the region, searching for his very own treasure. He's made friends and does well enough in class.

But, well... I didn't know this originally, but before I was hired as Headmaster Emile did have a few... problems... at school. Namely, bullying. Not- No he wasn't bullied, he actually was the bully. Or- One of the bullies, I suppose.

It was a rampant problem here at Naranja Academy up until a few years ago when the victims of the situation started up a team and packed together to defend themselves. Honestly the entire thing was a mess, and to think my Grandson was part of the problem...

Well, at least it's gotten better now, and I know first hand how terrible he feels for how he acted back then. He seems to have made up rather well with his peers, so it seems everything has worked out well enough.

💭 - What’s your favorite memory with them?

Well, back during my days as a researcher, Emile and Arven use to come visit the professor and myself in the Great Crater. I have many fond memories of this time.

Seeing as the Professor was usually busy, I would take it upon myself to show the children around and tell them about our research. I couldn't always keep Arven's spirits high, but at least when they were younger the two seemed fully invested in our work.

I even remember for a time Emile saying how he couldn't wait to grow up and be a Professor like his Grandfather... Why it just... It brings a tear to this old man's eye just thinking about it.. *Sniff*

i've been with hans for almost 10 years (come december), and lately it's just... exploded. i've been able to connect with him on such a deep level that it's even surprised me a little bit! and on that front, i don't know how to explain it. it's just something i feel.

but here's more about how i am able to grow and feel very close to him and many of my other f/os:

a lot of it is just being naturally curious and wanting to know more and more about him. you might not know everything there is to know about your f/o. almost a decade later and i'm still learning about hans (and no, i don't mean with new content necessarily because he never really gets any!). i still find bits and pieces about him from people's archives/general internet archives like the wayback machine, from canon sources, from wiki pages, from new-to-me media (books i haven't read where he plays a major role). the more i learn about him, the closer i feel to him.

i also make it a point to make the fictional world in which we both occupy as immersive and detailed as possible. think about the little things. even if it isn't about you and your f/o together. think about your s/i and their world. make them more real to you, in a sense.

on that note, WRITE. write often about you and your f/o, or even your s/i, or just about your f/o. even if you don't write stories, you can just write about your f/o either from your POV or your s/i's. or you could use your f/o's POV to write about you!

you can also just write dialogue snippets or random moments you think of sharing with them. imagined them going to breakfast with you? great! write it down somewhere. what did they order? did they like the place you chose? why? why not?

think about the things (interests, characteristics, opinions, beliefs) you have in common, or that you bond over. it's probably more than you think! and you can always extrapolate if there isn't canon basis for literally everything you can think of (chances are, there won't be).

listen to your f/o's voice. often. in my case, it keeps me grounded and makes me feel safer

have an archive of pics you can look at. i use pinterest a ton. i have one board that's just hans. just his pretty face everywhere. but i also have a board that captures the vibes of our relationship, what my s/i is like (i.e. how do *I* fit into all this?), and the world we come from (so it could also extend to the vibes of whatever source your f/o is from too). i also have a board that visualizes my s/i. what does your s/i look like? what's in their closet/what do they wear? what do they like?

there's probably more but this is what i thought of off the top of my head!

and lastly, and likely most importantly: never be ashamed of your love. love unapologetically, passionately, and truthfully. with all your heart.

I just wanted to say that you motivated me to like, I think the words you used was "curate my space"? (I can't really remember, I'm sorry, English is not my first language ;__;)

I have a F/O from a media that's not that much popular, and I tend to find the same person who selfships with my F/O on any social media, Twitter, FB, Tumblr, Instagram... Even YouTube. They're everywhere, and their love for my F/O is so we'll know that people in the fandom even mention them on posts related to my F/O. I tried so hard let it slide and be happy for them, but it was making me quite sad. I tried to suppress my feelings, but at the end of the day I felt like a hypocrite.

So when I saw your posts related to block people to make your space a better, comfy place, I tried it out and felt so much better. I can say a little more openly that I'm not-sharing, and I don't feel ashamed as I used to feel. It sucks, of course, cause I don't like to feel this way, but at the same time it feels nice to see other people like you, who are not-sharing, being so supportive! :)

So what I'm trying to say is... Thank you. Your posts make me feel happy! :D

hi.. sorry to bother you but i really just need to get this off my chest, yk? also any outside perspective would help a lot /gen /nf

i own and run a selfshipping discord server and am uncomfortable sharing f/os, as are most of my server members and my co-owner. someone joined and has a lot of f/os in general but a lot from a particular fandom im in. they're 'best friends' with one of my f/os and in a qpr with one of my co-owners f/os. we're both really uncomfortable with them in the server but we cant kick them bc they've done nothing wrong besides be annoying.

i want them gone, i hate that they think my f/o would ever touch them with a ten foot pole, hed hate them, like genuinely hate them. same for my co-owner's f/o, hed also hate them and wouldn't ever want to be in any sort of relationship with them, platonic, queer platonic, or romantic.

they also selfship with someone from that media that my co-owner heavily kins and sees herself as and whenever they refer to her as their wife, she gets really upset/

if youre thinking this is about you while reading this, i swear its not, the person isn't even active on tumblr so please do not think this is about you as you're reading this (not targeted at the runner of this account, just at selfship tumblr in general)

I think the best bet in this situation may be to kick the person you're having problems with (/nf), as even if they haven't done anything but be annoying, it sounds like the situation might only get worse if you have someone around who negatively impacts you or other people. Having someone around who makes you really uncomfortable seems like it would just lead to you and the co-owner feeling put out of your own space, and that wouldn't be very fair to either of you considering it's your space/server, so it's important to prioritize how you two feel and your boundaries
