Hot take: helluva boss is kinda better than hazbin? The characters feel more genuine and are more complex, they have more clear motivations and, though it definitely has its flaws (unhappy campers I’m looking at you), it’s just so much more fun.

The songs are often better, so is the animation— somehow— and it just consistently hits harder with both the comedy and the emotional points. Like I am so much more invested in the romances of helluva than the kinda-boring romances of hazbin. Both m&m and fizz/ozzie are sweeter and more developed than chaggie, stolitz intrigues me so much more than huskerdust (though I get that stolitz gets more of a focus in its show). Moxxie’s and Blitz’s daddy issues are so much more interesting than Charlie’s relationship with Lucifer.

It feels consistently better written, maybe that’s because there’s no interference from Amazon executives, maybe that’s because there’s less pressure to make it perfect, maybe that’s because it took its original concept and evolved out of it while not losing sight of it (something that can’t be said for hazbin hotel), I don’t know, but to me it’s true. Don’t get me wrong, I like Hazbin Hotel, but while I often feel the need to rewatch helluva episodes for things I missed or just because I want to experience it again, I don’t really get that for hazbin (except maybe episode 4?). Helluva boss feels more innovative, more creative, probably because it has the space and time to be that.

But first - this is probably my last Hazbin Hotel-related analysis until the next season; give me asks during this long dry spell!

I’m all for subjectivity. People can just like or dislike things regardless of quality. Heck, I know Helluva Boss is part of the Hazbin world, but it gives me too much cringe and vicarious embarrassment to handle.

But I keep hearing people say Hazbin Hotel is mid or just relying on hype.

Those are fighting words!

We are getting quality on par with Disney movies for a tv series!

That’s crazy! Let’s break it down.

Musical numbers

Talented singers play the main crew. Stephanie Beatrix plays Mirabel Madrigal, Kimiko plays Izzy, etc.

There were 2 songs per episode! And because it is truly perfect for a musical, we even get thematic reprises and callbacks!

Does anyone recall when similar things have happened in animation? MLP:FiM had a glorious episode that was ALL musical with a reprise. That’s all I have at this scale outside of Disney.

Characters

I’ve always known Vivzie to put thought into her work, and this shines through so well in Hazbin.

Lucifer’s depression is similar to my own

Angel’s gradual changes and struggles are realistic

Charlie’s breed of passion is the same as mine in my career

Alastor’s extremely manipulative yet we all love him

Velvette had one of the best formal character intros I’ve seen in a long time

Hazbin Hotel works really hard to get away from stereotypes, and dives in past superficial traits.

Also, we get things like Valentino sounding like he’s squeaking because moths squeak. We don’t need these things!

Animation

You know what else we don’t need?

Airplane arms!

Complicated dance moves!

Cute leg swishies with cuter sound effects?

Every second you see is 10+ frames traditionally. (Idk the studio’s technical details). That’s wild to add in these complicated extra details! And they flow so nicely! This level of quality for 2D (and honestly 3D too most of the time) is unheard of in the West nowadays.

And on that, western adult animated shows typically are so poorly made, especially in the art. Even the few I have seen that have okay stories to tell absolutely stink in terms of visuals and movement.

Story

Yeah, this is the biggest weakness Hazbin Hotel has, no doubt. The story is actually an incredible premise, and truly done pretty well within the awful time constraints. I think everyone is valid in saying it was far too fast! Hopefully we get more (or longer) episodes in upcoming seasons.

But at the same time, this is also the nature of musicals. If you think this is fast, don’t watch the Les Miserables musical where everyone only sings. Idk why, but singing the entire time makes everything seem like you’re in a race car on autopilot.

Don’t forget; the symbolism just drips out of the screen in this show. The fact that I could still do more analyses even now is a testament to that with all the content I have done since it aired. Vivienne goes hard on the details.

But put yourself in Vivzie’s shoes. You do the impossible, shot for the moon while hoping for maybe the top of a 5-story building, and you were offered the stars. Your project has been a part of who you are before you even went to university, and a major company gives you a way to bring it to life? Why wouldn’t you settle for this good of a deal?

Innovation

People do not bring up often enough that Vivienne broke a glass ceiling separate from that of gender. She showed that YouTube animations can be taken seriously, and even be aired.

In this age, the Saturday morning cartoon blocks I grew up with no longer exist. There were tons of great shows, and I could talk with other kids about it. Nestled within these weekends were shows that ran short pilot episodes for potential series. The last time I saw one was Adventure Time’s pilot.

It’s been a whiiiiiiile.

So having a cutesy little indie pilot animation amongst thousands on YouTube be such high quality and get a mainstream platform? Spindlehorse made history!

Moreso, Helluva Boss is also demonstrating the capacity of indie studios like never before - and what may pave the way for the future of animation too.

Out of all the animated series running on YouTube, Glitch is the only creator who does 3D that I am aware of. Even Glitch’s work has only started within the past few years, ie after Vivienne managed the impossible.

So please, stop complaining about subjective parts so much. Hazbin Hotel objectively has some of the highest craftsmanship in western animation.

We are blessed that Vivienne’s dream has come true in such a glorious manner. When I discovered her back in 2012, I couldn’t have guessed the pilot would be so successful, nor that it would change what was possible for animation!

Episode 3

Blitzo has an ex, and he also has a sister. 👀

Verosika. That like a weird mashup of Veronica and Vriska….But she was in rehab?

Ok Veroskia’s design is so pretty. But man she and Blitzo do not look like there from the same universe. Made it’s the color palette, or the lineart, it they kind of collide.

Oh, she’s a succubs. Neat.

Loona has a human disguise? Do all Hellhounds have one, or just her? 

Verosika human design is very pretty.

Loona having a crush on Vortex is cute. But man Loona human design is god awful when she’s standing next to Vortex. Her head is too big in some frames, and her anatomy looks off.

Moxxie and Millie team name is M&M, that’s cute.

Oh, Blitzo adopted Loona, who was almost 18 and almost aged out of the orphanage. Interesting choice. I wonder when that decision was made from the pilot to the actual show? Because in the pilot, Loona was just a snarky rude teenager receptionist. Here in the show, she insincure angry teenager.

So human alcohol can make imps drunk, but demon alcohol can make animals into violent mutants monsters..cool.

Vortex has a girlfriend, but it’s cool that he wants to help Loona make some friends!

Scale of 5, I give this a 3. It was just an ok episode.

Episode 4

Ok this version of heaven is very different then the Hazbin heaven. Maybe this is because this show was created when Hazbin was still a pilot? But there a a Cherub version of the Imps. AKA 3 angels trying to save people’s love ones. Ok that a cool premiere! Assassin group vs rescue (?) group!

Oh seems like Blitzo’s sister is his twin! Again, are they human that turn Imp or a hell-born demon?? It’s also cool how in the background they show small but important details. Like in a few episodes ago, they had a bunch of ads and poster of Fizz the clown robot.

Heheh her name is a play on barwire.

There 3 trilionaires in the human world??

Blitzo does have a point, when they kill somebody for hire, the victim gets sent to hell. Why is that? If it’s like a murder and the victim wants revenge that’s understandable. But in this case, the client wanted to kill the guy because he doesn’t want the person to have the inheritance. Why would that make the potential victim be sent to hell? Why would the clients want the people to be in hell anyway? To physically torment them? Like the episode where the teacher wanted to kill the girlfriend, what would she do once the girlfriend is in hell? Kill her again? Torment her?

Idk why, maybe it’s the lighting, or maybe it’s because Blitzo out makeup on, but in this episode he’s like a weird pale pink color then his normal red. I noticed this too with Moxxie in the beach episode. It’s kind of distracting.

Little pet peeve; I feel like there too much cursing? Like I can toon it out, but still. That and the causal fatphobia, sexism, and slur shaming..😬

Seeing 2 out of the 3 cherubs getting angry and curing, make me wish that when an Angel starts to do that, they start to fall. That the hate and stress corrupt them. It would be so cool to see.

Oh!!!!!! OMG the cherubs accidentally killed the old man, and now can’t be allowed back in heaven!!! Though the little deer girl didn’t actually explain what the rules are? BUT JUSTICE FOR LITTLE GOAT BOY HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG HE WASNT STARTING TO GET CORRUPTED. Goat boy is my son now. And I’m taking him as mine now.

Scale out of 5. I give it a 5. I love this episode, it shows a deeper worldbuilding of how heaven and hell operates and how both sides try to get humans on their side.

Episode 5

Ok, so the deal Stolas and Blitzo had was about having casual sex. Thought Blitzo can’t really do his job without the grimoire, but neither can Stolas. So what does it do?

Blitzo’s co-workers are from the ring of Wrath. 👀 interesting.

Yooooooo Millie’s parents!!!! Oooooo a lore episode. Ok so Millie has parents, so I guess Imps are born in hell? Then what’s the difference, the physical differences, between a human turn demon, and an Imp? Maybe it’s the white spots/marked they have??

Moxxie infodumping about war and the history is cute.

Millie moved to Imp City. I guess that’s either the capital of the ring they stay at, or like an area only for Imp???

In Dante’s Infero, Wrath is the 5th circle of hell. There 2 groups of sinner in this circus, those who anger is expressed, and thoese who anger is internal/repressed (sullen). The groups have different punishment. Thoese who express their anger fight one another on the surface/side banks of the Styx, and the repressed are underneath the river Styx, in the swampy mud.

What Vivzie does here is have the Imps play games an annual Pain Game. I’m getting the Imps here are just farmers??

Moxxie feeling insecure about not being physically strong is neat. I like his and Strikers dynamic.

Blitzo having some insecurities is odd, idk if feels way out of left field? But Striker does have a point, why does Blitzo stay or keep going back to Stolas if he needs the book? Can’t he find a different way to get to the human realm?

👀 stolas’s wife hired Striker to kill somebody. My guess it’s Blitzo, since I don’t think She would kill her husband, and especially not tell her plans when they’re at the dinner table.

Score out of 5, I give this a 4.

Episode 6

So the government as been noticing and keeping track of the Imps. 👀. Blitzo and Moxxie were kidnapping and Millie became extremely overprotective and while Loona was concerned. Nice that the girls are going to help.

Moxxie making an extra long and complicated code order, and then laughing at the humans and just being chill, is a bit odd. I’m use to him either being angry, insecure, or being empathetic. So seeing this side of him is new. Also, I feels like Blitzo, Stolas, and Moxxie and the ones that have the most screen time/character development.

“I’m like 5 years older than you”. If Lonna is 18, that means Millie would be 23???? Idk if that’s true or not but if it is….WHAT?????

👀 yoooo higher animation for the hallucinations scenes!!!

Ok, wow. I love this?? Moxxie hallucinations is him and Blitzo dress as phantom of the opera, and Moxxie is questioning his “friendship” with Blitzo. Asking him why he keeps pushing his friends away, why he alienates other with his toxicity. Meanwhile Blitzo is dress in a clown outfit, in the mud, seeing shapes. The hallucinations of Moxxie telling him that Blitzo needs him and that he doesn’t want to be alone. He also hallucinations Striker, Fizz, and his ex. Saying that people resent him. And that he doesn’t understand relationships but also craves it. Moxxie wants to speak his mind and be a better friend to Blitzo.

After they hallucinate, Moxxie tells Blitzo what he said to Moxxie on their first day together. Blitzo also compliments Moxxie and tell him to use his name instead of sir.

This is a sweet bonding between the two. I don’t know how to feel about it though? Like it feels like progress and to make the two characters that fight and argue at lot to finally come together…But at the same time, it feels a bit too soon? I don’t know…

The fight scenes are very good! Lots of camera movements, fluid animation, and fun angles. Thought at some parts when there wasn’t that many characters and it only focused on one person, the space of the room felt too big and the animation felt slow.

“HEY THE ENDO PERIOD WAS BADASS AND YOU KNOW IT” haha nice.

Uno oh spaghetti O….the gang is traps by the two governments agents……and they….cant get out with the book because the room is too dark? Seriously. Guys, there like, 4 of you and 2 of them. You literally massacred a room full of agents…

Oh well, Stolas came and save the day. That little horror scene is neat, I like his monster demon bird form. But also how did he knew what was happening????

Oh…Blitzo kissed Stolas…are they a thing? Just friends with benefits? I don’t ship them so I don’t care. Well, besides Stolas’s cheating.

Dang the government guys have evidence now!!!

Score out of 5. I give this a 3. The fights and hallucinations scenes were cool, but that all that was interesting.

Episode 7

For some reason this episode is title as final but there also an episode 8?????

!!!! Well dang, Blitzo is having a character growth. He acting nicer to Moxxie and Millie. Also, it’s Moxxiea and Millie anniversary! Demons can get married. They’re also going to the Lust ring.

In Dante’s inferno, Lust is the second ring, but the first sin. Sinners are punished by being whipped and hurled around tornado and violent winds. Dante also thinks lust is the least serious sin. Also King Minos is a demon who judge and listens to sinners and send them to their correct circle. Btw, Dante infero hell has 9 circles; Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Hersey, Violence, Fraud, and lastly Treachery.

In the Christian mythology, the seven sins are lust, pride, greed, gluttony, sloth, wrath, and lastly envy.

It’s interesting to see how Viv will combine or different the seven sins vs Dante inferno…

“Octavia is with her mother this weekend” 👀 oh they did get a divorce!!! Got for them. Well, like, not. But I’m glad they decided to end it instead of staying together and keep fighting every day. I guess Stolas can now try to be with Blitzo since he and his wife broke up?? But I still think it’s not good..

Okay If I’m being honest, Hazbin has made me pretty much lock it away from ever giving it anything higher than a 6/10 (For meaning “this overall is fine but I'll never rewatch it) And I feel a lot bad for it because I'm honestly less mean to it the Helluva. Because my biggest criticism of both shows is that they go WAY too fast. And that is really bad if you are a character progression show.

But I give Hazbin less shit for this because it is a LGBT+, animated show on a streaming service. They had reasons to believe the show wasn't going to get a second season. It is of course, but when working on the episodes they had no reason to believe that. They don't choose how many episodes they are given. They were only given eight episodes. That is an unfortunate amount of episodes too, even if you did do it at the right pace, you would have to pray it doesn't get canceled. So that's less of a fault on the show and more just the fault of streaming services nowadays and that just makes me sad.

This is more of a fault with Helluva because, please correct me with proof if I'm wrong, but there is ZERO reasons why they don't have time for at least ONE more episode. I know working on an animated show takes time I'm not downplaying that. But I CANNOT stress this enough. If you are a character progression show, don't skim over the progression. My biggest problem with stolitz is that it feels rushed to the point it is now. It would’ve been better if the two had ONE episode together. IDK maybe their working on a I.M.P mission together they bond. And with that, you can make Blitz’s feelings for him not come out of nowhere. Because it just shows UP in D.H.O.R.K.S.

And honestly do think I might like the Hazbin better. I'm not at the point where I hate a character that’s a good sign for me. Charlie is good, Husk is good, Angel and Vaggie are good. Pentious is great, Niffty is great. And fucking hottake after watching episode five. I think Alastor is my favorite character, I like him being a petty little bitch. Only being asshole to Lucifer by passive aggressively becoming Charlie’s father figure in only night because he’s a bitch. he’s horrible. He’s great.

Honestly the only way I'll love him by the end of the show fully. Is if he is just the main antagonist by the end. Let this petty fucker be the villain it would be awesome.

(I lied I hate Carmine as a character. Hey writers! Don’t reavel the culprit to a mystery after we just introduced that same character and then make them sing a power ballad over it so we can feel bad for them even though we just met them. Let us at least know the character for an episode before doing that.)

Last thing I saw someone say this and I need to let out a some facts. For those who say they changed Vaggie’s backstory last minute. Let me remind you that the pilot came out FOUR YEARS AGO. Things changed. Your OC’s aren't always gonna stay the same in the span of four years. I'm sure there are DOZENS of things in Hazbin that was changed for the original plan four years ago. And that's not a bad thing. Remember in the Steven Universe Pilot where they hinted Amethyst and Steven might be a couple, that shit ain'tn nowhere in the final show. The Pilot and the final show are different things. Things are not always gonna remain the same and that's fine.

Hellaverse Theories: Hazbin Hotel S1E6

Welcome to Quilly’s Hellaverse Theories, where I overthink the entire Hellaverse! Took a brief dinner intermission, now time to dig in, because this episode introduces so much to feast upon I’m probably gonna choke on it!

Hazbin Hotel s1e6, locked and loaded!

One of the stickers on Charlie’s luggage says “Pride” and it isn’t bedecked in rainbows, so I think that’s a pretty good indication too that Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are still in the same universe. Or at least it’s a nod to when they were. The thing is it shows up twice, now that I’m paying attention, and is a piece of background that follows them around—it’s on Charlie’s guitar case and another piece of luggage that’s in Charlie’s room, in the hotel lobby, and in their room in Heaven. That feels more significant.

(Also please tell me at least one other person hears the music playing when they first approach the gates of Heaven and hears “alien invasion” rather than “heavenly host.”)

I have heard it said that Saint Peter has “Kenergy” and I couldn’t agree more.

Interesting too that while Emily is completely sincere in her welcome and energy, Sera is…not. She’s polite, she smiles, but there’s always an edge underneath her that comes out more fully when talking to Adam in private, and keeping in mind that Sera has been here since before the Beginning and was the one who had to approve things like Lucifer’s Fall and the Exterminations…idk, introducing her with a line like “You are gifted to be here” really makes sense in that context.

OKAY SO MOLLY: according to my friend who has been a Hellaverse fan for years, Molly was originally meant to be in Hell with Angel. Cool story! Makes it especially interesting that for a background cameo, she stands out so much from the other winners. Maybe it’s her color scheme, maybe it’s the shape of her, but she stands out to the point where even if you don’t know who she is, she is hard to ignore. Everyone’s eyes move to follow Charlie and Emily when Emily starts picking up the song after Peter’s “and everyone is hot” line, but when Molly’s eyes are that huge, it’s much easier to notice when she does it. Combining her very obvious placement with this tidbit of background lore that appears to have changed (or did it?), it makes me question even more if Sir Pentious was the first sinner to be redeemed…or if he was just the first one that Sera noticed. She would have no reason to have seen another sinner in her eternal life, and we don’t know what happens to souls when they first show up; maybe teleporting in front of Sera and Emily is normal (I doubt it, since it’s much more likely that they show up in front of the golden gates to be shown in by Peter…which begs the question of why Pentious showed up there other than for narrative convenience). Either way…it’s a thought I’ll be keeping in mind going forward, because the idea of Molly being like Sir Pentious and being a sinner turned winner is very interesting to me.

Sera’s one rule might have been that only the Exorcists could know about the Exterminations…but with Adam’s loud mouth? I do have to wonder if it’s a badly-kept Heavenly secret. And there’s still the question of who the Exorcists are in the Heavenly hierarchy, if they’re Heavenborn or winners or what. (Y’all don’t know how desperately I want a mini-series about Heaven. Just regular life in Heaven. Slice of life stuff. Helluva Boss energy rather than Hazbin Hotel energy.)

Sera’s motivations in this episode are so incredibly interesting to me personally, and her language is worth digging into. “You failed to control the demons’ unrest” okay…so mass murder them once a year so they don’t have the numbers or the strength to rise up, expect it to break their spirits and submit to Heaven’s authority, got it. “I never would have agreed to your yearly activities if I thought it would bring trouble to our doorstep” So Sera has a clear distaste for the Exterminations, but she allows it anyway, all for the sake of keeping Hell out of Heaven’s hair. Or…perhaps something else? “Keeping Heaven safe was my only reason for allowing it.” Hmm. Hang onto this tidbit, might be more important later. “I want you to do whatever you need to in order to stop this problem from getting any worse.” Lady you have the Princess of Hell in here whose plan really boils down to “can you stop killing my people please,” YOU could stop the problem from getting worse if you cared to open up your mind a little.

The thing is, though…there are many reasons why someone can be closed-minded, but the root of it is usually fear. Sera considers protecting Heaven enough of a priority to agree to a yearly genocide that she doesn’t particularly like the idea of. She wants to keep the genocide a secret, because she knows very well how the rest of Heaven will react to being even tangentially responsible for a widespread act of bloodshed and carnage even if it is against sinners (those are the winners’ families too, y’know; look at Angel and Molly). She has all the makings of a leader with good intentions that lets those good intentions lead her to committing war crimes in the name of preserving what she considers to be good and worthy. Getting the shape of her now; let’s move on.

Alright, detour for a second: cannibals. What the actual heck are they? I know none of us know and have theories and blah blah blah, but…everything points to them being sinners, as far as I understand it, even the kids (which, the fact that there are kid sinners…hecked up, dude), but then again, I keep not paying attention in the last episode when several of them are getting killed and potentially showing incriminating gore splatter, so maybe the evidence is there, I just haven’t seen it. But to my understanding, Overlords can only be sinners because only sinners have any use for souls and soul contracts, and an Exorcist wouldn’t be chasing down a kid if it wasn’t a sinner in the first place. Which makes me wonder if there are any Hellborn at all in Pentagram City. We know they exist in Pride at large, assuming once again that HH/HB are in the same universe, because Imp City is in Pride and is the home of IMP, where they specifically cater to sinners (and recently dead ones, too), so sinners have to be able to travel between the cities in Pride. Does this mean that the Exterminations are ring-wide, or are they just centered on Pentagram City because that’s the seat of power? If there’s overcrowding in Hell (Pride), is Pride just that inhospitable a landscape where they can’t build more, or are the Exterminations effective in culling their numbers while still not really making a dent in the overcrowding problem? (Is there actually an overcrowding problem or is that just what Heaven says they’re doing when the real reason is a lot scarier?)

Here we go, the only person to acknowledge Lilith’s existence outside of Charlie, and it’s Adam! And he’s super gross about it! Womp womp! But I suppose he’d be more likely to mention Lilith over Lucifer, since. Y’know. Married to her and all. And apparently making recent deals with her. Maybe. I have a whole Thing about it but it occurred to me to wait until I get to that part of the finale, but. Just wanted to acknowledge that there is one singular person who knows who Lilith is and mentions her and he isn’t even from Hell at all, he’s her shitty ex-husband who comes down to cut her kingdom down to size once a year.

Also, can we admire the audacity Charlie has to approach Heaven—HEAVEN—with her business plan without any indication that the damn thing actually works? That’s the point, that’s the whole point of this episode, but I just. Wow. WOW. She believes in it so hard but she still can’t PROVE it. The fact that she happens to be RIGHT is almost like a huge cosmic coincidence, like she made it happen by believing in it hard enough (and wouldn’t that be a kick in the head?). PRINCESS. OF. PRIDE.

And again, a callback to episode two: when the stakes are higher and the battleground is much more real, Charlie doesn’t go for Sir Pentious to prove that her hotel can work; she goes to Angel, because even though the work he’s been putting in hasn’t been flashy and catering to her initial kindergarten snowflake version of help, it’s been quiet and real and hard-won. Charlie is right to put her faith in Angel, and she sees him and everything he’s doing to improve himself. He’s the perfect candidate for her to make her point. And it’s a beautiful turning of the pilot on its head, because whereas there, Angel embarrasses Charlie and disproves her entire plan, here…he proves her right. He has her back and doesn’t even know it. I am emotional about it.

oKAY HERE IT IS THE BOMBSHELL THE ONE I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR AND NOT THE ONE YOU ALL HAVE PROBABLY BEEN THINKING: Adam was the first human soul in Heaven. It’s been established that while the Hellaverse’s version of Heaven and Hell follows the basic Christian map, it differs in some important key areas. Those familiar with the Biblical story of Genesis might remember a little tale about two brothers named Cain and Abel. The cliffnotes: Cain kills Abel. Abel is the first human who dies according to the Bible. So, with this singular piece of information—Adam was the first human soul in Heaven—we have a few possibilities here. Either Cain and Abel didn’t happen, Adam died before Abel did, or…maybe Abel isn’t in Heaven. And I am fairly certain that the last possibility is the one that excites me most, even if I think the first is the most likely.

But this also leads me to the other topic I’ve been dancing all around throughout these episodes: Adam, Lilith, Alastor, and the nature of their respective afterlives. There’s still one important episode to get through before I can tie all the pieces together, but I can start to weave a lot of them together right now. Adam is explicitly a human soul. The First Human Soul. Lilith was also a human soul. They should be a winner and a sinner, but they aren’t. It’s unknown if Lilith ever even died. So. What the unholy hell happened to them? Does something happen to a human who enters Hell without dying first? Did Lucifer do something to her to help her as they were being cast into Hell? Lilith has, without question, the biggest horns in both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. If someone points out some bigger ones to me that I missed, I’ll be embarrassed, but for now I’m sticking to this point: Lilith got honkin’ horns. Big mommy gorers. Really scarily impressive headgear. Like, proportionally, what are her neck muscles even like?? But more importantly: what she is taxonomically is really unclear, just like Adam. It would appear that as the first creations of Heaven, it’s possible Heaven and Hell respectively changed them. Perhaps Sera gave Adam a promotion and Lucifer, in making Lilith queen, gave her a leg up. They’re something else, something apart from run of the mill angels and demons.

So is Alastor, it would appear, but more on him at the finale when I tie this all up.

Anyway, back to the other regular bombshell: the first indications that no one has any idea what the rules are for getting into Heaven or sent to Hell. I am sincerely wondering what Adam thinks he did in life to “stick it to the Man” and I would love to hear him talk about it, actually.

And for another thing—if he wasn’t so opposed to what Charlie is trying to do, he would be the exact soul to understand what Charlie means about getting a drink with friends at the end of a hard day. What, Adam, you’ve never gone and gotten smashed with your Exorcist buddies at the end of a hard day of Exterminating? Would have been such a sweet gotcha but also ruined the dramatic tension so I get it but meh. I can dream. The Exorcists probably lift more fingers than he does during any given Extermination Day anyway.

(Side note to grumble about the fatphobia; the character designs are so good and varied, Viv, you’re telling me you couldn’t fit more than two fat main-ish characters in the Hellaverse and they’re both pretty shitty people? Anyway. ANYWAY. To be fair, it took me a while to realize that Adam is supposed to be fat; he has a very A-line frame, which is. Y’know. Appropriate. But the “letting yourself go” thing Lucifer says…ugh. Come on. Though I do appreciate that there were no fat jokes about Mammon in the Mid-Season Mammon Special, bc it would have been so easy to slip one in there but they didn’t. That shouldn’t be where the bar is but the bar is…well, not even in Hell, we have to go lower, because of the fat jokes about Moxxie who is visibly not even a little chunky. I get that it’s edgy shock comedy but. Sigh.)

Additional side note to appreciate Joel Perez and wonder if the background stuff he says as Val before Niffty shows up was ad libbed, because “yeah I’m here all the time, they know me” at a sex club called CONSENT just about KILLS ME. THE IRONY. SO MANY LEVELS.

Side note to my side note that I don’t know if that’s actually irony or if I’m so used to that word being applied to funny coincidences that it has lost all meaning.

Anyway I hope Niffty gets to terrorize Valentino more in upcoming seasons. Also the public nature of this standoff between Val and Angel is something I wish they had more time to go into the repercussions of. Angel pulling against the chain, Angel standing up to his abuser for the sake of his friends—I LOVE IT OKAY. HE’S A GOOD MAN.

And there it is, the quiet part said out loud: NOBODY KNOWS WHAT GETS A SOUL INTO HEAVEN. Still the best twist I’ve ever seen in my entire life. And the most maddening piece of worldbuilding to date, because it’s great, it’s flawless, it sets up so many questions and conflicts, but wtf do you MEAN nobody knows?? Well. Clearly somebody must. They know when a soul passes divine judgement (how?), when a soul shows up in Heaven, but who set that mechanism into place? Who does the judging? Who wrote the program? The obvious answer should be God, but God isn’t here, at least not yet. I think it’s entirely possible the Seraphim were following a plan of Creation that they didn’t understand, they just trusted blindly and punished Lucifer for deviating from. It’s a popular view of Heaven in pop culture, tbh. And I just relistened—the souls arrive, and then they pass divine judgement. Is it possible for a soul to arrive and NOT pass divine judgement? Probably not, one would think arriving meant they passed, but…the problem with the fast-paced nature of Hazbin as opposed to Helluva Boss is that stuff like this doesn’t have TIME to get explained, if it would in the first place. It’s just dweebs like me who overanalyze everything and who are stuck gnawing on every scrap we can get our teeth around who maybe ask questions like this. Sigh.

“It is our job to ensure these souls are safe.” Wait for iiiit.

“It’s not as simple as you think. Not everything is spelled in ink.” Wait for iiiiiiiit.

“I’m sure you wish it could be so, but there’s a lot that you don’t know.” Waaaiiiit foooor iiiiit….

(Side note that this song still gives me massive chills, I adore it, but WAIT FOR IT—)

“They were uprising, Emily! It is my position as the head Seraphim to protect our people at all costs! […] Heaven needs us, Emily. […] We can’t doubt ourselves or worry about the fates of demons when we have our own souls to protect.” THERE IT IS. Okay. This isn’t exactly new information, but to hear it from Sera—Sera is TERRIFIED. That’s what strikes me about her. She’s not angry, she’s frightened. She has contempt for Hell, but there is something she is so scared of that she will allow something she clearly abhors because it’s a necessary cost for protecting Heaven. This is what makes me think that either Lilith really was plotting an uprising against Heaven…or something else was. Something else was taking advantage of Hell’s strength, growing as it grew, gaining…root, perhaps? (Roo. It’s Roo. I’m talking about the Root of Evil.) And it also strikes me as significant that Sera is concerned with protecting SOULS. If Heavenborn are like Hellborn, they don’t HAVE souls (except as a metaphor for a sense of self, not as an actual worldbuilding mechanic). We’ve seen that souls can be double-dead. We’ve seen that they can be sold, and told they can be mangled (because I’m not convinced that Alastor’s unlucky Overlords died—I think he shredded them and stuffed them into his radio waves somehow and that’s just where they live now, but that ties into the whole argument of if sinners can regenerate or if anything but angelic steel can kill them). Can something else happen to souls? Is it possible that maybe Roo or something like her can consume souls? Gain their power? Threaten Heaven itself the more she consumes, the more she grows?

Are they afraid of the potential of Roo? Or did she do something to earn that terror? Because the way Sera is acting…my money is on something happening early on or even before Creation, something that the head Seraphim knew about but maybe Lucifer didn’t. That sure seems to be a recurring theme, not telling your sparkly-eyed young dreamers all the risks before they take them and then punishing them when their mistakes get a little too big to handle. Hmm. Hmm hmm hmm. Interesting.

Now I’m gonna detour to talk about Emily: it’s a popular theory that Emily is going to Fall, and there is definitely foreshadowing aplenty. But seeing how the other angels in that courtroom seemed to react to Emily, how a good number seemed inclined to agree with her…I’m not so sure now. Conflict in Heaven is unavoidable, because the secret Sera didn’t want getting out is out there now, but will Emily and those who agree with her be cast out…or something else? A War in Heaven is never mentioned in the Hellaverse, another way it diverges from a lot of Genesis-based theology; we don’t know if the Sins in Helluva Boss are Hellborn or Fallen angels like Lucifer, and there’s no mention of any angel falling except for Lucifer in Hazbin Hotel. Could Emily be the one to lead a War in Heaven? Whether that ends with her Falling or not, it’s an incredibly intriguing concept, actually, bringing to the fore the very fears that Sera has been working so hard against. Because if War comes to Heaven, I’m sure certain agents of chaos (Roo) won’t be far behind.

A lot of looking down the road, for me, seems to be forming a shape where Heaven and Hell work together to take care of their souls, hanging onto the ones who like Hell and passing on the ones who put in the work to deserve Heaven. But that still feels too simplistic, too tidy. Combining the two into a singular afterlife is a theory I saw once, which feels slightly more on the mark but I’m not sure. There’s just so much we don’t know—and the fact that there is so much more to the story that Sera knows but refuses to tell Emily or Charlie tells me that it’s finding out the deeper, darker lore that is going to make predicting what will happen with Heaven and Hell easier. Gotta know where you were to know where you’re going and all.

And that is the end of my theorizing for this episode; the next episode probably won’t have much, but the finale is going to be a doozy for wrapping up a lot of my theories about afterlives, Overlords, deals, magic, a lot of it. And I’ll get it done some other day because it takes me over two hours to get through these episodes when I’m pausing to word vomit like this!

idk but since it seems you’ve seen a lot of animated stuff, have you watched rescue bots? It’s a transformers animated show (all the seasons are free on YouTube, YouTube my beloved)

Rescue Bots I have not seen. The moment my parent realized theyl abuser had caused a fight between us on purpose, they promised me I never had to go back. And I never did. The abuser underestimated us, and now my parent and I are doing better. The abuser's daycare/afternoon care business is gone from where it was (and hopefully hopefully aren't working with kids). I had... not so healthy friendships as a younger kid. Where others would be the dominant friend, tell me to do certain things or we wouldn't be friends, treated me less like a person and more like an extension of themself. I maybe had one constant, healthy friend, and we weren't even in the same grade, or same part of the school. Went to my (later would become) adopted grandma's homeschool, and it helped me learn how to heal. How to become better, and let go of unhealthy religious beliefs and deal with my trauma.

I haven't seen Rescue Bots, but I've heard of Transformers, and thought it looked kinda cute. And while I haven't seen BoJack Horseman, children should not see it either. Not for kids. Just because it is a cartoon does NOT make it child friendly. Even Hazbin and Helluva aren't child friendly, they're for older audiences.

I made a post about Hazbin Hotel, now it’s time for Helluva Boss

If I had to pick a favorite character, it’s quite easy. I absolutely adore Stolas. Just his personality & the way he still cares for his daughter despite his wife being a colossal grade a bitch. Honorable mentions to Blitzø & Moxxie, I absolutely love those two. Same with Asmodeus and Fizzarolli, I love those two as well. Beelzebub is another fun character (fun fact of the day: her song “Cotton Candy” is the first song I ever heard from both HB & HH. I heard it on TikTok)

Least favorite character has to be Striker. I’m probably gonna get crucified for that opinion, but I just can’t stand his arrogance. Dishonorable mentions to Moxxie’s dad (who I can’t be bothered to remember his name because I hate him THAT much.) as well as Stella & Mammon.

If I had to pick a favorite ship… Besides Stolitz I absolutely love whatever Ozzie & Fizz have going. I want someone to look at me the way Ozzie looks at Fizz. (Maybe I just want to be loved idk XD)

Helluva doesn’t have much bad abt it afaik (apart from Brandon rogers who says the n word and makes rape jokes constantly in his “comedy”) but there was a lot of problems with hazbin, with the racist stereotyping of vaggie (angry Latina, also wtf is that name) and how she treats charlie, the fact that Charlie could honestly have been replaced with a hat stand and nothing would have changed, the homophobic stereotype of angel dust (violent drug addicted drag queen who sexually harasses other men), how the voice actor of alastor treated kellen goff (voice of Funtime Freddy + other characters) in an animation cleanup stream (he was really rude to kellen, telling him to shut up and just being mean to the point where the angel dust va and the artist running the stream had to ask him to stop), and blah, the fact that alastor (the fucked up asshole serial killer) is meant to be creole.

When it comes to vivzie herself, it’s shown she encouraged people shipping charlie with alastor (before charlie was retconned as bisexual. She was supposed to be a lesbian in a wlw relationship at the time), she originally confirmed alastor as aroace because he was “too evil to love” (and still encouraged shipping him with charlie), she defended racists and transphobes, she tried to deflect the homophobia allegations by saying “I’m bisexual I can’t be homophobic”, she used voodoo symbols off of google images for spooky points in hazbin, she used to make comics where she had a teacher and a student in a romantic relationship

This is all just things I remember from when I was in the hazbin hotel fandom. I left pretty soon after the alastor VA was an asshole to kellen for not picking up social cues right after kellen talked about his autism, but I just kept hearing more shit about what vivzie was doing. This is the kind of thing that people dislike her for

I don't want to support or bash Vivzie and Hazbin 'cause there are lot of red flags but like it doesn't seem super bad at the same time???

My DEPRESSION BEATING, fandom obsessing, shit-tastic FANTASTIC year in review!

TL;DR: I’m fixing my mental health and figuring out WHO THE FUCK I AM one fandom filled day at a time! Thank you to everyone who’s been there for me along the way. xoxo

what’s up HEATHENS.

stating the goddamn obvious here, it’s been a HELLUVA YEAR. One emotional rollercoaster after another but we’re ALMOST DONE. I know things aren’t gonna magically get better the second it flips to 00:01 on January first, but I’m excited to put this year behind me, and (SHOCKINGLY) a bit sad to see it go.

It was a year where the whole world completely stopped, we realized what is really important, what is really worth fighting for, and took a GODDAMN SECOND to just breathe.

For me personally, the year (which I’m counting off from November 1st) started out UNBELIEVABLY SHIT. I had just been kicked out of the country I called home for the last four years (thank you Brexit), I had ZERO job prospects, my depression was the WORST it had ever been, and I just didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. And in the beginning, the pandemic felt like salt in the wound, an extra kick in the teeth to my early twenties that had already “failed to launch.”

But I tried to embrace the madness, really take advantage of the world (that I always thought moved to fast) properly slowing down, and take time to try and become myself again. I wanted to figure out what I loved and try and become a bit more like the person I was before my depression got so bad.

I often say I became that Manic Trash Planet Lady™ you see in sci-fi adventure films; a bit zany to say the least, with a million ideas and a very eclectic fashion sense, but embracing the insanity as it comes...

*cough cough* audrey, get to the goddamn point!

I’m not 100% “healed”, I’m not sure if I think depression is a “oh look you’re officially cured! hooray!” type of disease, but this year I let myself ENJOY SHIT for the first time in god knows how long. I still don’t know “wHaT i WaNt To dO WiTh mY LiFe”, but I’ve got a better idea and I’m heading in (what feels like) the right direction. And most of all, I can look back and say I am better than where I was a year ago.

So I wanted to say T H A N K Y O U to the mad lads on this website that introduced me to the fandoms, shows, movies, fics... THE SHIT that made me happy this year and were there to be one (BIG) piece in my healing journey.

November 2019  The Arcana (Visual Novel)

I had just gotten home and I was in a LOOOOOOW place. Randomly decided to download this app when it came up and it proceeded to ruin my life (and my bank account...) for pretty much the rest of the year. It was exactly what I needed to get me through a tough time and I was thoroughly, horse-blinders-up-to-the-rest-of-the-world, OBSESSED. These gorgeous magical fiends ruined me and all I could say was thank you.

Joined the fandom: November 2019 Obsession peaked: Late November Obsession faded: December 2019; I started a new job AND my bank statement came in and I realized I had accidentally spent over SIXTY BUCKS on this stupid app. No ragrets, but I definitely started to phase out at that point. Fandom friends: Velma, (@lanavxds on insta) miss you girlie xx Fanfics you NEED to read: ‘Second Mistake’ by DeathBelle on AO3, because DAAAAAYUM SON. Favourite moments: Basically the whole of the Julian arc. That gangly himbo OWNED my ass for a month.

December 2019 Hazbin Hotel (TV Series)

Y’ALL okay here me out. Am I proud of this one? No. Is the show crass as hell? OOOOOOOOHHHH YEAH. Did my angsty ass love it at the end of last year? DAMN STRAIGHT IT DID. Goes without saying, but this is NOT FOR EVERYBODY, but it definitely helped me along the way to becoming more comfortable with myself and being open about being the massive geek that I always was, and watching things I enjoy regardless of what people say about it.

*Officially* discovered this one thanksgiving weekend in 2019, but my Arcana phase was still raging pretty strong at that point so I didn’t really get in to it until later. EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOTHER NEEDS TO READ IT. It has everything and handles the reality sexual assault and it’s aftermath EXTREMELY well.

March 2020 Yuri!!! On Ice (TV Series)

*deep breath* ...y’all knew this one was coming.

Was I ready for this show to ruin my fucking life? No.  Am I so glad it happened??? FUCK YEAH.

NEVER IN MY LIFE have I fallen off the deep end so quickly with a fandom. HOLY SHIT. This blog didn’t have much of an “identity” before, but I you said that this is a Yuri On Ice blog now I wouldn’t even be mad (nor could I really defend myself to the contrary... bc??? like??? just go LOOK at my archive). Craziest thing is I watched the first two episodes like?? a solid TWO YEARS ago, but I didn’t continue watching because I was just not in the right head space for all the love and silliness and positivity.

I could do a whole separate post about how much this show and how this fandom has changed my life (DON’T TEMPT ME I JUST MIGHT). But I’ll stick with the highlights for now ;)

April 2020 Bungou Stray Dogs (TV Series)

I had a hunch I was gonna like this show considering ALL of the characters are based off of famous classic authors from around the world... what I was NOT prepared for was just HOW MUCH I was going to love it. HOLY SHIT. The art style? Love it. The plot?? Bonkers, but so fun. THE VOICE CAST??? AMAZING. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to get in to anime, great place to start.

‘He Works Hard For the Money’ by CataclysmicEvent @cataclysmicevent2019​ -- Sugar Daddy AU. FUCK MAN. I was not expecting to like this one, but bloody hell. This fic grabbed me by the throat and WOULD NOT let me go. Praying for chapter 16! But the author is working on another STELLAR fic so I’m okay for now.

‘Everything or Nothing’ by CataclysmicEvent @cataclysmicevent2019​ -- University AU. FUCK THIS FIC. Started reading it as I was waiting for HWHFTM to update and BOI, this fic ROCKS. The alternating POV fits so well with the enemies/idiots-to-lovers vibe. Solid 10 outta 10.

‘The City Where Wind Blows’ by @raven-rein​ -- Cancer Death fic. *pained shriek* AAAAAAGUUUUUUUHHHH *gasp* aaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHHHHH, FUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKK MEEEEE. THIS FIC. Only the second fic I’ve ever cried to but I BAWLED MY GODDAMN EYES OUT. FUUUUUUUCK. I was not ready, never would have been ready. This is so tremendously well done, it killed me so beautifully, 

‘Haunted by Hatred’ by DeathBelle -- Canon compliant Soukoku. It is a CRIME that DeathBelle doesn’t have more BSD fics on her page, but this one is still brilliant.

June 2020 Trash Taste (Podcast)

Goddamn I love these chaotic lads so much.

As I became more and more comfortable with myself and my love for anime I stumbled upon these three goons, -- Joey, Connor, and Garnt, -- best known for there SUPER successful (mostly) anime YouTube channels. Even if you don’t watch anime, WATCH/LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST. The focus is mostly on their lives and the overall expat/immigrant experience, with a bit of anecdotal anime references sprinkled in. 

This show is both wholesome and heathenous in equal measure, and after having lived abroad for a significant portion of my (admittedly still quite short) life, it was such a breath of fresh air to hear people talk so openly about how living outside your home country is both wonderful and terrifying. They’re wonderfully candid about the fact that even if you love a place dearly, no where is perfect, and you WILL hate somethings about your new home even if the majority of the experience is fantastic. I cannot rate this show highly enough.

Joined the fandom: June 5th 2020, loved it from the first episode. Obsession peaked: July maybe? I was RELIGIOUS about watching the episodes as soon as they came out. Still watch every week, but less “on time.” Fandom friends: None :( but I have tricked my partner in to listening several times :) Obsession faded: It’s dimmed from where it was, but still going strong. Fanfics you NEED to read: NONE. NEVER PLAN TO. Hard and fast rule, I don’t read fics about real people. Characters played by real people, even that’s a maybe for me. But real-real people? FUCK NO. Bringing a retired Japanese porn star in the show for an honest conversation about consensual sex work and showing people can have more than one career in life.

Everything about the, ‘Are Online Friends Real Friends?’ episode. GO WATCH IT, it’s brilliant.

August 2020 Great Pretender (TV Series)

Spent most of the summer marinating in my BSD and YOI bubbles, until THIS BAD BOI came up on my Netflix recommendations. HOOOO BOI. This is some Anime Of The Year shit right here. Has a pretty original concept (Catch Me If You Can by way of Oceans 11-ish) but generally starts out like most other shounen (sans the super powers). AND THEN EPISODE FIVE HAPPENS. Not gonna spoil it but they TOOK THAT SHIT UP A NOTCH. Brilliant, even with a bit of an insane ending. GO WATCH THIS ONE.

November 2020... kind of. Figure Skating (Sport)

Okay this one is a bit hard to explain. 

I have been a DIE HARD figure skating for A LOOOOOONG time. My grandmother got me a hat from the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and I remember watching even then. But I first became consciously aware of different skaters, my faves, etc. from about 2010. I vividly remember watching Plushenko skating in 2014 while on a school trip to Hawaii, and my friends laughing at me as I yelled at the TV.

But I didn’t TRULY get involved in the fandom side of it until this year. I had all this knowledge bottled up, but didn’t have any skating friends to talk to... UNTIL NOW. Super ironic that this happened in a year with almost NO skating, but I’ll take what I can get ;) Also did I stay up until FOUR-GODDAMN-THIRTY IN THE MORNING a few nights ago to stream Japanese Nationals on my phone??? YOU BET I DID.

Joined the fandom: Three times; 2002, 2010, and 2020. Obsession peaked: 2014? 2018? Idk it peaks any time someone does something amazing. Coco (Film): I watched this the weekend I came home and I owe this movie a lot. It is so sweet an heartwarming, and it a roundabout way it brought me back to Tumblr (needed somewhere to vent my feelings considering I watched the movie a solid THREE YEARS after it came out, Tumblr seemed like the place to go lol). Watched in again in 2020 and it’s just as amazing.

Jekyll and Hyde (All media): Loved this book from the first time I read it in my first year of uni. But in December 2019, my fandom understanding reached its PEAK. The musical?? The comic?? YOOOOOO.

Dear Evan Hansen (Musical): I have BARELY engaged in fandom discourse, but the MUSIC. She fucking SLAPS.

Sirius the Jaeger (TV Series): This show is such an underrated gem. It literally has so much; "dead” family drama? Eclectic international group of monster hunters? Cowboys and vampires?? Yes, yes, and YES. And the main character has the same Japanese voice actor as Atsushi from BSD!

Studio Ghilbi (Films): My love affair with Ghibli goes back to when I was about 5 and BEGGED my mom to take me to the library so we could rent Kiki’s Delivery Service on DVD. But that love has been FULLY rejuvenated this year when I went to the Ghibli Film Festival in New York City (ironically in the last week in February). If you haven’t seen them, go watch From Up On Poppy Hill, Whisper of the Heart, and The Wind Rises. Spoilers, you’re probably gonna cry.

Let me preface this by saying: obviously whatever I say right now is a cry into the wind. Nothing I say has any application to the actual shows and will probably be moot in the next few episodes of Helluva Boss or when the Hazbin Hotel episodes start up.

This is all theory, basically. My personal theory, and my personal preferences for what I like to see in media.

I think the biggest hurdle for Charlie's hotel will end up being that Heaven simply won't let sinners in.

Idk if it'll be a superiority complex, or if Heaven has their own overpopulation issues like Hell (although I think that's bullshit, and if anyone wants to hear my theory why, LMK)

But even the cherubs got the boot when they fucked up and ACCIDENTALLY killed a human. Not even killed! "Resulted in their death!" Implying even if they had done everything right, but the old man still... ya know.... they still would've been kicked out of Heaven! And maybe that was part of why they were so desperate to fight the IMPs on that one, because they'd have severe consequences if they screwed up.

I very much look forward to Angel and others working towards redemption. (I'm always a sucker for a good redemption arc.) And I think that'll be really difficult. But I think, ironically, the main conflict of Hazbin Hotel will come from Heaven, not Hell.

Oh boy, I feel like A LOT of people are gonna hate me for saying this…..

BUT-

Yes. The first reason was because before episode 3 came out, I was already shipping Loona with someone else. (No, it’s not Octavia. It’s not ANY of the Helluva Boss Characters, It’s a character from Hazbin Hotel.)

When it comes to ships, I basically just pick a ship, and stick with it. Sometimes I don’t understand it when people lose interest in their ship and say “Oh yeah, I don’t ship that anymore, I actually ship this now”, when that happens, I’m just like “Wait, how? How do you do that?” I honestly LOVE the ships I already have, when new ships come by, I’m just not interested. I’m STILL a Stolitz shipper, even when Striker exist. (Also I have stories and Headcanons making Stolas a better person.)

So, yeah, with this Loona and Vortex ship, I was kinda just doing everything in my power to avoid seeing it, cause like, I was sick of seeing it everywhere. I was still in love with my Loona and Crymini ship. (Yup, that’s who I ship her with. )

Now, obviously, Crymini is aged up when I ship her with Loona, because, I think the last time I checked, she was a teenager and Loona was a young Adult. But, I could be wrong, maybe Crymini isn’t a teen? Idk, things have changed with Hazbin a lot.

But, anyways, I kinda like the idea of Vortex being like a big brother and seeing Loona as a sister. He was so nice to her and wants to help her get friends!

I’m shipping Vortex with his girlfriend. (I actually drew a picture on what I think Vortex’s girlfriend looks like, I told myself I wasn’t going to do that though, because I was gonna end up being upset when she doesnt end up looking like how I imagined, but, I like to torture myself, so I drew it anyways, maybe I’ll post it on Tumblr sometimes. But that’s not really important right now!)
