Sunday adventure: A mix of hiking and cycling 🚴 for 12 km to reach the ‘Kanheri Caves’ atop a hill 🏞️ in a national park. The inclines burned my legs but the freedom of the the view at the top and of cycling down the paths made it all worth it. Tough day, but so rewarding.
‘Kanheri’ comes from the Sanskrit word, Krishnagiri, meaning black mountain. The 109 caves were rock cut in the 1st century BCE by Buddhist monks and contain inscriptions and sculptures reflecting the spread of Buddhism and its monastic way of life during its early phases in India.

The most beautiful place on the Earth is KASHMIR, India. There are 4 places in the mountains of Himalayas. Valleys, mountains, passes and peaks (or summits). Mostly the tourists will be in the valleys, watching the tall mountains. The trekkers were in the mountains, crossing the passes and watching the valleys. The mountaineers climb the peaks!
The views for each observer is different and is breathtakingly beautiful. But the landscape seen by the trekkers cannot be ever seen by the tourists.

Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek: A Scenic Adventure in the Heart of Uttarakhand
Nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is a picturesque journey through some of the most beautiful alpine meadows in India. Known for its expansive grassy slopes, awe-inspiring views of towering Himalayan peaks, and rich biodiversity, this trek is a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. The trek is ideal for beginners and seasoned trekkers alike, offering a moderate level of difficulty while rewarding them with unforgettable vistas and cultural experiences.
Tumblr media
The Route and Key Highlights
The trek typically begins from Lohajung, a small hamlet located about 230 kilometers from Kathgodam, the nearest railway station. From here, trekkers embark on a multi-day adventure that takes them through dense forests, charming villages, and vast open meadows known locally as "bugyals." The two primary bugyals on this trek—Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal—are among the largest high-altitude meadows in Asia, sitting at an altitude of around 11,000 to 12,000 feet.
Ali Bugyal: As you emerge from the forested trail, Ali Bugyal opens up like a lush green carpet, with gentle slopes stretching endlessly towards the horizon. The meadow offers panoramic views of the snow-clad peaks, including Trishul (7,120 meters) and Nanda Ghunti (6,310 meters), two of the most revered mountains in the region. The tranquility of Ali Bugyal, coupled with its expansive beauty, makes it a photographer’s paradise.
Bedni Bugyal: A short distance away lies Bedni Bugyal, another verdant meadow with equally stunning views. This area holds religious significance, as it is en route to Roopkund, a high-altitude glacial lake famous for the ancient human skeletons discovered at its edge. Bedni Bugyal is also home to the sacred Bedni Kund, a small lake where pilgrims offer prayers during the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, an important festival held every 12 years.
Flora, Fauna, and Cultural Richness
The trek offers a diverse experience in terms of both flora and fauna. The lower sections of the trail pass through dense oak and rhododendron forests, which come alive with vibrant blossoms in the spring. As you ascend, the vegetation gives way to vast alpine pastures, home to grazing sheep and horses. The region also boasts a variety of bird species, making it a delight for birdwatchers.
Another highlight of the trek is the opportunity to interact with the local people in the villages of Lohajung, Wan, and Didina. These villages are home to the Bhotiya community, known for their rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Trekkers often get a glimpse into their traditional way of life, experiencing the unique charm of these remote Himalayan settlements.
Best Time to Trek
The best time to embark on the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is from May to June and September to November. In the summer months, the meadows are lush and green, with clear skies offering splendid views of the surrounding peaks. Post-monsoon, the bugyals take on a golden hue, creating a different yet equally mesmerizing landscape. Winters bring heavy snowfall, making the trek inaccessible from December to March.
Conclusion
The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is a must-do for anyone looking to experience the raw beauty of Uttarakhand's Himalayas. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural encounters, this trek offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and the local heritage of the region. Whether you’re trekking for the panoramic mountain views or the serene beauty of the bugyals, this adventure promises an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas.
