“Shit. Shit, shit, shit, c’mere.”
“Someone get the medic. Get the medic!”
“Hey, hey, shhhh. Shhhh. You’re okay.”
“You did so good. Don’t worry, you-you did so good.”
“Here, lean on me. I can carry you.”
“We’re gonna fix you up, brand new. I promise.”
“No. No, stop. Stop talking like that. You’re gonna be fine.”
“Okay. Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do—fuck.”
“I know, I know it hurts.”
"I don't care. I'm not leaving you."
“I’m going to lift you up, okay? Tell me if it hurts.”
“Where are they? Where are they?!”
"I would believe that you're fine, but you have a goddamn knife sticking out of your leg, so."
"You just watched them die."
"This is going to hurt, okay?"
"God, I'm so sorry, it'll be over soon, I promise."
"How many fingers am I holding up? ... I don't have six fingers."
"Stop. No. Wake up. Wake up! I said wake up!"
"I came as soon as I heard."
“Get away! You’re hurting them!”
“Please be okay. Please be okay, please be okay—”
“Shit. Shit, that’s a lot of blood.”
“You dumbass. Don’t do that. Ever again.”
"Help them! Please!"
"You scared us all back there. I... Including me."
"[name]? [name], this isn't funny. Stop... please..."
"Breathe... breathe. Look at the stars, kid."
"It was supposed to be me... please, no, [name], please..."
"Tell me where it hurts, and be specific."
“You’ll be fine.” *silence* “You’ll be fine. Hey! Wake up! Please. Please wake up…”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

"Shh, it's fine, I'll carry you the rest of the way."
"No one will hurt you again, I promise."
"Can you walk?"
"I'm going to kill them for doing this to you!"
"Please, don't leave me here." "I would never."
"I'm sorry I took so long."
"We'll patch you up soon, don't worry. And then everything will be fine."
"Hold onto me, okay? I'll get us out of here."
"Please don't be scared. I won't hurt you, I swear. I'm here to help."

^ they try to smile, followed by an immediate hiss
"it hurts, huh."
"shh, it's gonna be fine. please keep talking." "i can't.. t-talk-"
their blood smudged hand reach for your cheek. eyes trying to focus on you
"i.. love you."
"this is not your fault."
"i can't.. *tearing up* i can't feel your touch."
eyes tearing up, not knowing what to tell you
"it hurts so much, it's so.." frustrated tears flow because there's nothing they can do now
"please don't leave me.." "i want to rest, my love."
hugging them, saying something to them and then panicking, when they don't respond. (bonus points if one said i love you and the other died right after hearing it!!)
wincing between every word.
"I'm- so...so sorry."
"You're my heaven o-on earth, did you k-know that? :)" followed my an attempt at a smile that shreds you apart.
constant shortness of breath.
they take your hand and kiss it, griping it tight. it's when their grip loosens, you know...
"You've to live your life, [name]. You need to survive, and move on, and-and be.. happy. The happiest. just like i am now."
^ "why are you happy--now?" "because i get to die in your arms. the safest place.."
noticing a tear rush down their cheek after they've closed their eyes.
"no, no-no, fuck, [name], don't give up on me like that, please-please.. stay.."
"I'm gonna get you--" "no, no, no.. no don't. don't l-leave me alone, [name]. I can't br-breathe..."
"let go of me, love, I'm gonna sleep now."
lying near their cold unmoving body.
^ holding their limb hand, praying that this is all a nightmare and then you can wake up to their cheerful self. stupid hope.

how to make a character’s death even sadder (part 2)
have the friend(s) comforting X as they die sing a song that has special meaning between the two of them
bonus points if the song was a favorite of one of their deceased family members/friends
have the toughest, most serious character cry at the funeral or burial after they’ve toughed it out until then
have them warn their friends that they’re not cut out for a dangerous mission, only for it to result in their death and their friends blame themselves
have the character die doing something they’ve always wanted to do, such as dying during childbirth when all they’ve ever wanted to be was a parent, or dying during a car accident immediately after getting the car they’ve wanted since they were a little kid
have the other characters realize that X’s death was completely preventable right after X has died
show the character’s parents’ reactions
have another character be forced to make a split second decision to save X, not realizing it would kill Y in the process, then have them find out that Y died because of their choice
have them die on the way to the hospital
force one of their family members to kill them or aid in their death
have X celebrate killing the threat, then have the threat immediately kill X in the middle of saying that they’re in the clear
right before their death, show a part of their personality that no one has seen before, such as make an always bubbly character cry during their death, have the tough character break and show genuine fear of dying, or have the one who’s always been afraid of dying finally come to peace with death as they’re slipping away
make it so that the audience is just beginning to really like the character
show X’s friends defeat an enemy and when they turn back to X, they reveal they were injured
put the character through emotional turmoil the majority of the story, then kill them off when they’ve finally gotten back to a good place
make their death happen as they’re having a good time, telling a joke, or overall being happy so that it’s unexpected
make it so that they’re a timid character who lets people be mean to them, and they die standing up for themselves for the first time

"Drop them." Caretaker ordered, causing Whumper to freeze. Their arm was under whumpees shoulder, they seemed barely conscious and are clinging to their arm for support.
"I SAID DROP THEM!" Caretaker yells.
"As you wish." Whumper sighs; the second they unhook their arm, whumpee collapses on their knees with a wounded gasp.
Unfortunately, that's how caretaker realized they're hurt.

Injury…
"does it hurt?"
"here, let me get that for you..."
the classic "who did this to you?"
"I can do it myself."
a going wild over b's minor injury
not leaving the bedside
pacing back and forth
squeezing the hand of a comatose
"it'll be quick."
"it won't hurt, I promise."
"maybe you should hold my hand..."
"it's no big deal."
"...damn."
fanning a stinging spot
"oh, I didn't notice."
keeping a stern face for them while dying inside
"stay? please?"
making soup
"can you even see through all these get-well flowers?"
"you're lucky it's not worse."

Whump stuff that often gets overlooked
Whumpee has a specific position they must assume in order to sleep; but due to the nature of their injuries, they must sleep in a position that is uncomfortable to them
Having an injury that doesn’t hurt very much, but is potentially life-threatening if the healing process is messed up. Whumpee tries to move in a way that lets it heal, even though they could easily run, jump, twist, and climb (which would probably grind their bones or pop some stitches if they tried it).
Coming up with increasingly creative ways of picking things up off the floor
Overusing the other limb so much that it becomes worse than the injured one
Swollen masses of bruises being visible through tight clothing; so Whumpee has to wear baggy clothing
Needing to wear soft, loose clothing to not break open a healing wound when they move

Imagine a character taking a nasty fall and immediately crying. Everybody thinks they're being dramatic because there's no visible injury. So while everyone else is busy calling them a baby, caretaker knows something is up because they never wail like that. Upon closer inspection, caretaker realizes they've torn a muscle. That shuts everyone up real quick.

Comfort Prompts
"It's alright, just breathe, okay?"
"You look like you need a hug."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"I'm here if you want to talk."
"You know you can tell me anything, right? And I will listen."
"Shh, please don't cry."
"C-can you... hold me for a while?" "Of course."
"It's going to get better, you'll see."
"I know it doesn't look like it now, but the pain will pass."
"It's fine, shout if you need. Just let it all out."
"I'm not going anywhere. Now, or ever."
"You are not alone in this."

cw: whump aftercare, dialogue, implied near death experience
the caretaker and the medic sitting down after treating the whumpee. maybe the medic just performed a difficult operation, made some really effective medicine or treated a particularly bad wound.
whatever it was, the medic helped the whumpee with their capability and quick thinking.
the caretaker didn't have the tiniest idea of how bad the whumpee was actually doing. but it looked bad enough, so they sigh in relief when they finally rest next to the medic, and they try to brighten the mood a little bit with some optimistic thinking.
"wow, medic," the caretaker gives a tired but relieved laugh, "you might've just saved their life there."
the medic looks them in the eyes as they stay quiet for a few seconds. "yeah," they admit and run their hand across their face, just as exhausted, if not more. their tone was nowhere near caretaker's uplifting one.
"wh- wait, medic," caretaker breathed out and their smile dropped, "medic, i was just joking. they wouldn't have actually..."
medic looked away. "yeah."
the room went silent.
