Iniziato lo sviluppo della PCI Express 6.0: quando arriverà sul mercato?
La tecnologia procede un po' a gradini, alternando progressi a momenti di stallo. Pensate al mondo delle CPU prima del ritorno di AMD con i Ryzen – che vedeva Intel praticamente ferma sui suoi piedi – e al moltiplicarsi di core e frequenze avvenuto in un solo anno. Certo il chipmaker in blu continua ad avere ritardi sulle tecnologie produttive, ma oggi abbiamo processori di fascia consumer che prima potevano sognarci, come l'i9-9900K con 8-core/16-thread. Guardando dentro il case di un PC assemblato nel corso degli ultimi 10 anni, possiamo facilmente evidenziare le aree in cui si sono concentrati i cambiamenti. Penso ad esempio allo storage, che è passato da soluzioni meccaniche su SATA II ai primi dischi solidi, poi alla SATA 3 ed infine alla ben più veloce PCIe. La RAM, invece, è un componente che ha impiegato più tempo per migliorare, difatti nel 2009 c'erano già le DDR3 che ancora si usano oggi nelle soluzioni mobile o a basso voltaggio, mentre le DDR4 si sono imposte a fatica.
Un altro ambito particolarmente stagnante è stato quello delle interfacce d'espansione seriali interne. Dopo la PCIe 3.0 – presentata nel 2007, ratificata nel 2010 e disponibile dal 2011 – la successiva versione 4.0 ha latitato per molto tempo. La cosa curiosa è che nel 2017 è stata già annunciata la PCIe 5.0, le cui specifiche sono state completate e rilasciate a gennaio di quest'anno (2019), dunque precedentemente alla primissima implementazione concreta nel mercato consumer della vecchia versione 4.0, arrivata con il recente annuncio di AMD.

Questo accavallamento di date che ci ingarbuglia il cervello è divenuto piuttosto normale dati i lunghi tempi di gestazione del PCI-SIG e quelli di aggiornamento, ancor più lunghi, dei chipmaker. Possiamo solo sperare che non servano altri sei anni prima che arrivino soluzioni concrete con PCIe 5.0, ma la ruota, nel frattempo, non smette di girare.
Proprio ieri, 18 giugno 2019, è stato annunciato lo sviluppo del PCI Express 6.0, che raddoppierà ancora il data rate in/out con configurazioni a 16 linee totali e se ne prevede il rilascio definitivo (delle specifiche) nel 2021. Se già con la versione 3.0 c'erano stati ritardi dovuti a problemi tecnici, la 4.0 ha rappresentato il più lungo periodo di stasi che ora, però, sembra decisamente superato. Almeno da parte del PCI-SIG. Non possiamo di certo prevedere i tempi che richiederanno i produttori per adeguarsi con implementazioni concrete, ma una stima di massima potrebbe realisticamente essere la seguente:

EPI: el proyecto de microprocesador de Europa
Europa está preparando un gran proyecto, se llama EPI (European Processor Initiative), para crear un microprocesador de alto rendimiento para evitar la dependencia tecnológica de Estados Unidos. Una idea extremadamente necesaria viendo cómo está el panorama actual y los bloqueos que ha impuesto Estados Unidos a China. Europa necesita de grandes proyectos colaborativos entre sus miembros como este.
Tenemos una alta dependencia de tecnología extranjera y ante ciertas artimañas de políticos o de geopolítica, no podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados o arrodillados antes las potencias. Con EPI tendremos un futuro microprocesador con una gran cantidad de inversión para su desarrollo y con la participación de 10 países europeos, entre los que está España, Suecia, Alemania, Francia, Suiza, Italia, etc.

Concretamente, de España participan dos miembros importantes, una empresa especializada en diseños de dispositivos semiconductores y el centro de supercomputación situado en Barcelona. Es decir, el hogar del supercomputador Marenostrum del que ya hemos hablado en varias ocasiones. Todos juntos trabajaran para crear un chip de alto rendimiento y eficiente energéticamente hablando.
Con él podrán crear futuros supercomputadores de exaescala (EFLOPS), y además extenderlo a otras aplicaciones. Y para ello, y esto es lo que tiene que ver con este blog, se basarán en una ISA abierta, la RISC-V de la que también hemos hablado en otras ocasiones en LxA. De esa forma, no dependeremos de chips de Intel (Xeon), AMD (EPYC), Oracle (SPARC), IBM (POWER), etc., y quién sabe si en un futuro también para la informática de consumo. ¿Te imaginas un PC 100% Europeo? Ojalá se consiga algún día.
Resumiendo el proyecto EPI, tendría los siguientes puntos clave:

Crear un procesador de alto rendimiento y propósito general.
Podrá ser usado en supercomputación en 2023, pero también se trabaja para obtener procesadores para sistemas de consumo, dispositivos de bajo consumo, automóviles, etc.
Basado en un sistema económico sólido y prolongado en el tiempo.
Sin duda otra gran noticia que nos ha pillado casi por sorpresa tras los problemas de Huawei y el bloqueo tecnológico por esa guerra de Estados Unidos vs China. Cuando comience a dar más frutos y sepamos más noticias, las iremos contando.
