Making a Food Pyramid for Health & Well-being at Ela Green School

As it is a center of value addition concerning the health and well-being of students, learning by doing is hugely applied by Ela Green School. The other day students went to the class with food items, and even Kinder acted as the decorators; however, this time they were able to make better use of the food items as they built a food pyramid.

Classroom Activity: Classifying Food Groups.

In this activity, each student drew a chit from a box in which he/she had inscribed the name of the food item. Their assignment was to establish what the food was and put it in its family. Learning this process included learning the food groups, which include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy products, and the roles and practices.

Building the Food Pyramid.

The students explored further cooperation through the making of a food pyramid after food item classification. The pyramid portrayed the order of importance of various means, stating that a healthy diet is when the right amount of nutrients, nutrition of all types, is taken in moderation. The visual representation helped to strengthen the principle of moderation and the example of daily food consumption.

Strengthening Understanding in Nutrition

The task is challenging and very useful in helping the students explore and consolidate their knowledge of categorizing food items based on their nutritional qualities. They understood it better by doing what different kinds of food do towards maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

At Ela Green School, we put the safety and welfare of our students first. As a way of furthering our dedication to protecting our children, we recently had an important meeting on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. We are privileged to have had Mr. Krishna Moorthy as our guest speaker, a distinguished advocate at the Chengalpattu District Court, and a senior counselor with 15 years of illustrious experience in handling POCSO, Malia, and criminal cases. His expertise and dedication to justice make him highly respected, and his insights were invaluable to us.

Insight from the Ela Green School’s Meeting on Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH)

Introduction and Purpose of the Meeting

Welcome to the Ela Green School Community! We are very excited to share our discussions during the meeting that was held lately concerning the prevention of sexual harassment (Posh) at the workplace in India. Everybody present, however, had an experience that showed them how enlightening this entire session could become.

Esteemed Guest Speaker: Mr. Arocia Das

Our guest speaker was Mr. Arocia Das, who is known for oration on diverse themes and is a practicing advocate at the High Court of Madras. His expansive knowledge about legal matters helped in bringing insight into the PoSH Act, thus making it an informative as well as an interesting session.

Key Insights on the PoSH Act

Firstly, Mr. Das talked about various issues related to this act and its use for the creation of a safe work environment where respect reigns supreme. To explain this Act fully, he went through the fine points of the legal framework, employer’s responsibility, and employee’s rights under the same document, whose elaborateness culminated in enabling our staff and students to appreciate how important PoSH is in preventing as well as tackling sexual harassment at workplaces.

Questions flowed after that; participants had the chance to ask queries that they never understood regarding the Posh Act, but they wished to get it made clear by Das from his end. He answered each one, still ensuring nobody left without knowing what he had been assigned under the PoSh Act.

Among the several IB schools in Chennai, India, including Ela Green School, which is considered one of the best, this institution where we nurture young minds to be lifelong learners is filled with pride. This year, our primary school program 5 students who are about to become graduates were celebrated with a grand exhibition as their last activity, marking the end of their basic education. It did not only display their academic excellence but also their profound knowledge of nature because it was based on the natural environment.

A Theme Rooted in Nature

The PYP exhibition is an important part of the school curriculum that allows students to apply what they have learned in classrooms to real-life situations. For instance, pupils opted for the subject matter of “the natural environment,” which echoed our philosophy on ecological sustainability and carrying out environmentally friendly decisions. The theme therefore provided a good opportunity for connection between what our youngsters know and the reality within which they live as an IB PYP school in Vandalur, situated amidst luxuriant trees.

Several months ago, preparations for this exhibit started when our children embarked on serious research and inquiry. The learners explored different things concerning nature, such as ecosystems and biodiversity, conservation efforts, and human activities that affect it, among others. We've given them a new life, transforming them from potential landfill dwellers into twinkling, shimmering ornaments fit for a plastic-free paradise. But this isn't just about decking the halls with recycled goods (though, let's be honest, it's pretty darn cool).
