#OTD in 1922 – The last British troops leave the Free State.
They are the remnants of a 5,000 strong garrison maintained up to that point in Dublin, commanded by Nevil Macready. Last British troops leave the twenty-six counties of the Irish Free State. It appears to have been a friendly farewell, even while Ireland was embroiled in its own Civil War. The Union Jack was lowered at the hospital and Macready went to review the final contingent of troops as…

“They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything.
But the fools, oh, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace”.
Patrick Pearse - in his famous speech at the graveside of the militant Fenian O’ Donovan Rossa at Glasnesvin Cemetery in Dublin, in 1915.

“Oath of Allegiance to Crown to Soon Vanish,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 28, 1933. Page 1 & 12. ---- It Will Become Dead Letter in Anglo-Irish Free State Treaty - Senate Blocked de Valera Move But That Body Now Rendered Powerless ---- (By the Canadian Press) DUBLIN, Irish Free State, Feb, 28. - Sixty days from tomorrow the oath of allegiance to the British Crown will vanish from the constitution of the Irish Free State and become a dead letter in the Anglo-Irish treaty.
President Eamonn de Valera will effect its disappearance by a motion in the Dail Eireann invoking Article 38A of the constitution, rendering the Senate powerless to obstruct passage of his Oath Removal Bill any longer. The constitution provides that bills which the Senate refuses to pass in such a manner as to satisfy the Lower House will, at the expiration of fifteen months, become law despite the Senate. In the event the Dail is dissolved in the meantime, the waiting period is shortened to sixty days.
The oath question has dominated every election campaign since the Free State was founded and has caused endless acrimony and bitterness between large sections of the Irish people.
Section That Offends The section of the Treaty to which so many Irishmen have taken offence says:
"The oath to be taken by members of the Parliament of the Irish Free State shall be in the following form: I... do solemnly swear true faith and allegiance to the constitution of the Irish Free State as by law established and that I will be faithful to H. M. George V, his heirs and success by law, in virtue of the common citizenship of Ireland with Great Britain and her adherence to and membership of the group of nations forming the British Commonwealth of Nations."
It was on this section that Mr. de Valera and his followers in 1921 founded their objection to the treaty and refused to recognize it. William T. Cosgrove and his party, however, found no cause for complaint in the section and insured that the oath clause in the constitution which was framed later should be a strong one.
Made Mandatory Article 17 of the constitution made the oath mandatory. The Republicans refused to take it and remained outside the Dail, leaving Mr. Cosgrave and his adherents with a clear field.
For a while the Republicians pursued a policy of abstention, contenting themselves with getting elected to the Dail and boycotting the Assembly. At that time all the Republican forces were concentrated in one organization, styled "Sinn Fein" (literally "ourselves alone"), but they grew tired of abstention and loss of political capital in the few years that followed.
After the 1932 elections when Mr. de Valera found himself heading the Government for the first time he immediately attempted to remove the oath. He was blocked by the Senate, He is now in a position to force removal of the oath but is still faced with a possibility that this move will fail to satisfy left wing extremists including the old Sinn Fein,

Bridie, did you get that new hat yet?
'In wider Irish society workers like Bridie, or the women organised by the IWWU, were like a puzzle piece that did not fit into the broader picture of nationalist imagination of Éireannachas (Irishness) ...' - Klara-Maeve O’Reilly

6th December
On Raglan Road by Patrick Kavanagh
On this day in 1922, the Irish Free State was founded as an independent state after the Irish Civil War. From that point 26 of the 32 Irish counties formed the Republic of Ireland while the remaining six comprised Northern Ireland, dominated by Protestant Loyalists, and remained part of the United Kingdom. Kavanagh’s poem of lost love is set on a Dublin Street. Three of its four stanzas follow below.

On Raglan Road
On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I walked along the enchanted way,
And I said, let brief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.
On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the
ledge
On the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s
pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay -
O I loved too much and by such and such is happiness thrown
away.
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had wooed not as I should a creature made of clay -
When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn
of day.
The Irish Civil War was between two factions of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who had fought for independence from Britain. The so-called “Free Staters” wished to accept the British offer of the 26 counties while the remaining IRA wished to hold out for full independence and to renew the war with the Crown. The Free Staters won and the boundary between the two Irelands has remained fixed to this day.

#OTD in 1933 – The Irish Free State government purchases the copyright of Peadar Kearney’s, ’The Soldiers Song’ (Amhrán na bhFiann) which becomes the national anthem.
The lyrics of ‘The Soldiers Song’ were written by Peadar Ó Cearnaigh (Kearney), an uncle of Brendan Behan, who together with Patrick Heeney composed the music. Before the present-day National Anthem was adopted, “God Save Ireland” was the unofficial anthem used by the Fenians and the official anthem was “God Save the King” until the Irish Free State was established in 1922. The official anthem…

Here's the thing
I don't care what happened in the past. I don't care what happened before Israel started their genocide on the Palestinian people. I know, sure, but I don't care.
I do not care what happened, you never take your revenge in the form of civilian lives. No crime should ever be paid for in innocent blood. There is no provocation- and I mean none, absolutely zero- that could ever possibly justify torturing, displacing, starving, and mass-murdering innocent people. There is not one crime on this Earth that could ever, and I mean ever, justify murdering even one innocent child. There is no crime that could justify ethnic cleansing, no crime that could justify genocide, no crime that could justify attacking journalists and medics, no crime that gives you a free pass to use the Geneva Convention as a goddamn to-do list.
There is nothing that could ever justify what Israel is doing in Palestine. I don't care if something provoked them, the only acceptable amount of civilians killed by combatants is zero. And yet Israel targets civilians, journalists, and medics with glee. They use a six-year-old girl as bait to lure Red Cresent workers into a trap and murder them. There is nothing that could justify that. Not one fucking thing.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
