In The Memory Of Irrfan Khan
On April 29th, 2020, the well-known actor Irrfan Khan passed away due to a colon inflammation. This was unexpected even when he disclosed his condition on Twitter in 2018. This is a sad occasion for everyone, so I thought instead of mourning his death, we should celebrate his contribution to the industry.
Long Story Short
Born in Rajasthan to a Muslim family, Irrfan Khan was from a generally low class family. Although he was talented in cricket, he had to opt out for acting instead because he didn’t have that much funds. He did his MA in Jaipur and joined the National School of Drama in 1984. After graduation, he was given minor roles in TV shows with little to no acknowledgement. Soon enough, he was given a slew of feature length films that gave him critical success and recognition, such as Rog, Maqbool, and Haasil. In 2008, he appeared in Slumdog Millionaire as the cop interrogating Jamal ruthlessly and he gained international recognition from there. After some more movies, he recieved a National Film Award for best actor for his role in Paan Singh Tomar. During this time, he recieved the fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri Award. He got a taste of commercial success with movies like The Lunchbox, Piku, and Hindi Medium, which eared him Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His career seemed to be going stable with movies like Karwaan and Angrezi Medium, but little did we know that the latter will be his last film appearance.
Notable Performances
Miyan Maqbool in Maqbool
Ranvijay Singh in Haasil
Ashoke Ganguly in The Namesake
The Police Inspector in Slumdog Millionaire
Paan Singh Tomar in Paan Singh Tomar
“Pi” Molitor Patel (adult) in Life of Pi
Saajan Fernandes in The Lunchbox
Rana Chaudhary in Piku
Raj Batra in Hindi Medium
Champak Bansal in Angrezi Medium
Legacy
In his 35 years of acting, Irrfan has grown a cult following with very devoted fans. Coming from a low class family, his inspiring story to stardom is the best example of hard work and perseverance. He was a role model for an entire generation of film lovers and showed how far true dedication can get you. Truly a humble talent Bollywood didn’t deserve, his death has left a gaping hole in the industry. May he rest in peace and may his memory and legacy live on forever.

Ahead of the Bigg Boss 13 finale, we ask our readers to vote for their favourite contestant and tell us who should be the winner this year.  Take the poll here: Who should win the Bigg Boss 13 trophy? Here is a look at the Bigg Boss 13 contestants and their journey in the house: SidharthShukla One of the strongest contestants on the show, Sidharth has been an aggressive player throughout. Be it his fights with Rashami, Paras, Asim or even close friends Arti and Shehnaaz, he has always been abusive and often physical during his altercations. However, fans of the TV actor advocate him as a genuine person who has been playing the game logically. Of late, Sidharth began showing his softer side, as he got close to Shehnaaz. He has even said he cares a lot for her and loves spending time with her. Will the clever mastermind win hearts? Asim Riaz Model Asim is one of the most oft-seen faces on the show. After being the closest friend to Sidharth, Asim turned his biggest rival and has shown his violent and abusive side during his fights inside the house. Asim also displayed his romantic side when Punjabi singer Himanshi Khurana entered the show as a wild card entry. ShehnaazGill Punjabi singer Shehnaaz has the image of an innocent, who can often be irrational. Often claiming to be a child at heart, Shehnaaz has brilliantly stayed in the game, switching sides and loyalties. She began her journey with Paras and announced her love for him but later switched preferences and declared Sidharth as her new love. Will her innocence be rewarded? Also read: ‘Irrfan, waiting for you’: Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor’s heartfelt messages after Angrezi Medium video ParasChhabra The reality TV star has been one of the most innovative players during most of the tasks. However, his innovations were lost in trying his best to get the tasks cancelled, eventually getting a scolding from Bigg Boss. Paras has had a rather controversial journey inside the house, with his closeness to Mahira creating trouble with his girlfriend Akanksha Puri outside the house. Will his real life affect his game or will he be seen as a person true to his feelings? RashamiDesai TV actor Rashami journey began on a quieter note but she soon gained momentum. Her altercations, mainly with Sidharth and later Mahira, have kept audiences entertained and engaged. Will that be enough to win the show? Arti Singh One of the underdog success stories on the show is that of Arti. A comparatively lesser known face and with lower confidence than most contestants, Arti soon emerged as a clear voice - one that stands with whosoever she feels is right at the moment. However, she has been criticised for taking Sidharth’s abuses and even justifying him. Will she win the game? Mahira Sharma Though she is still seen on the show, Mahira Sharma will reportedly be evicted during a mid-night eviction that will be announced by Vicky Kaushal. Vicky will visit the house to promote Bhoot that hits theatres on February 21. Mahira has often been blamed to be a shadow of Paras and not playing the game on her own. Paras, on his part, has declared he wants more than friendship from her but she has drawn the line at friendship. Follow @htshowbiz for more Read the full article

Hindi Medium Review - Hindi Movie Hindi Medium Review
Tumblr media
Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar are childhood sweethearts from Chandni Chowk. He has a large clothing store and she takes care of their home and their child Pia who is now ready to be sent to school.
She's fun to watch, with her character finicky about the child eating right, not watching too much tv, playing right (you laugh out loud when you see her sanitise the slide in the park!). But she has ambitions for her child. And the ambitions include getting the child admitted to the best school in Delhi.
Irrfan Khan plays the loving husband, drives the wife to the schools that look more like fancy hotels rather than schools. But at her insistence he moves bag and baggage to a fancy neighborhood so they fulfil the residential requirement that will enable the child's admission to a fancy school.
Now Irrfan Khan is a good actor, but you see red flags go up when he begins to overdo the 'acting' as they leave Chandni Chowk and he laments over Kulche Chhole. The script takes us to the travails of this wealthy but very clearly 'Hindi Medium' family attempting to fit into 'posh' society. Your jaw drops as the madness to get the child into a good school is pushed further and further and you like when Deepak Dobriyal shows up on the screen as neighbor. The humanity and the way of life is fun up to a point, but you are exhausted by things like 'kill the Dengue mosquito by humming like female mosquito' which are meant to be funny.
By the time the lessons are learnt and the hearts transformed, you as audience is exhausted. Hindi Medium Review - Hindi Movie Hindi Medium Review of how poor kids deserve a good school too is tiresome. Sabah Qamar is beautiful and unlike TV actors who have not really made a mark on the big screen, she actually shines. Irrfan Khan starts out as a fun guy but tends to ham, ham and ham some more. Deepak Dobriyal is as good as ever. Tillotama Shome hammers home the role of a supercilious prep school head and you shudder because such people exist and terrify new parents as they get desperate to get their kids admitted to good schools.

August: First Week
Over the last 14 weeks, I’ve acquired a new addiction… analyzing. Since I started studying media I can't seem to see things how they used to be. Nowadays it happens quite often that whenever I’m watching a movie I automatically start analyzing it,  although not like professional but more like layman and it annoys my brother so much that he stopped watching movies with me as frequently as he used to. Before I opted for media the only things which I wanted in a movie to be were it should be light hearted, without too much action and a happily ever after.
Now I can watch movies of any genre and can give honest review too but......their are side effects that I face like if I don’t get a clear ending I’ll keep thinking about it for days or If someone did something foolish even after knowing it’s going to lead him to an unfortunate life I start thinking about ifs and buts this sometime gives me a headache.
If it were up to me, I would like to watch a movie without facing any after-effects.
Anyway, so this week we revised what we previously learned and some new key media terms.
There is an acronym developed for the key media concepts. It is called MIGRAINE.
M- media
I- institution
G- genre
R- representation
A- audience
I- ideology
N- narrative
E- environment
Key media terms:-
Anchorage
Where the meaning of a media text is fixed or stabilized by a caption, shot type, costume or so on. Often, the elements of a media product, for example pictures in a newspaper, a camera angle in a TV programme, or a setting in a videogame tell us very little. Without the producer anchoring the image into a particular ideology, an audience could interpret a text in any way they choose.   However, producers often have a point of view that they wish to disseminate to the audience, so they choose to fix a particular meaning. The most pertinent example of anchorage is where meaning is anchored by newspaper captions.
We also learnt about connotations and  denotations.
Connotation
connotations are the meaning that the sign has and is derived through the audience’s cultural experiences. For example the color black has a lot of meaning, it means the absence of color. Black is a mysterious color that is typically associated with the unknown or the negative. It also represents strength, seriousness, power, and authority. Black is a formal, elegant, and prestigious color.
Denotation
Denotations are what an image actually shows and is therefore immediately apparent to the audience. Literal definition of a word in a dictionary.
Clip Analysis
We even did some clip analysis so that before we start studying this topic in detail we have a idea how we have to write the answer in notes and after we are done with that we can go for the big answer.
 Bypass - 2003
Tumblr media
The first film which we analyzed was a 17 min Indian short film, titled Bypass. Directed by and written by Amit Kumar.
A bypass somewhere in Rajasthan, two violent bandits and one of them is a mute desperado. These two fleece frequently rob people and ultimately strip them off there life. specially the ones who travel by that road. There is one more character which although in the eyes of people is their knight in the shining armor but in reality his armor does not shine, a corrupt police officer. A knight who does not hesitate before cutting the wrist of the damsel in distress only for a mere watch. “Bypass" is a beautifully shot short film based on a simple premise. This dark tale of life in the desert takes no prisoners, life is shown as cheap and the director delivers an uncompromising story in a stylish manner. This short is also considered a work of art as it uses no dialogue or subtitles, instead it relies on the performances of its small cast to deliver the story which  includes   legendary actors like Nawaz Uddin Siddiqui and Irfan Khan.
Fight Club - 1999
Tumblr media
For this movie we only analyzed the airplane sequence. This was an adaptation from Chuck Palahniuk Novel of the same name directed by David Fincher.          As far as I could understand. It was about an unnamed narrator who attends several support groups in attempt to subdue his emotional state and relieve his insomniac state. And also needed a fantasy to escape from his deadly mundane life, however the only thing they do in the group is cry into each others chest, which actually helped him a lot for he was having some peace in his life. But then he is on a plane on his way back from what a viewer would assume is a business trip. and that was it, I’ll be honest I haven't watched it till now maybe someday I might watch the whole movie. Although some of my friends who are crazy fan of this film warns me...….God might not give me any place in the heaven if I won't watch this movie before dying (it's not like I’m dying tomorrow...…🤷‍♀️ .fine who have seen the future).
Meghe Dhaka Tara  - 1960
Tumblr media
Although we analyzed the opening 4 minutes of this film, but as I’m a curious minded person, I had to watch it completely and I did exactly that. As we all know one curiosity leads to another that is director Ritwik Ghatak. An active Marxist who began his career in the Communist People's Theater, Ghatak's films never achieved widespread popularity but he is now considered to be one of the top Indian directors of the last half of the 20th century. His best known film Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star),The independence of India in August 1947 resulted in the partition of Bengal, a trauma etched in the minds of the people whose lives were changed forever. Nowhere is this upheaval better portrayed than in this films. It was the first in a trilogy examining the economic effects of partition, is a powerful story about a young Indian women who sacrifices her education and marriage in order to hold her family together.   Ghatak's inspiration for the character was a woman he saw at a bus stop whose beaten down appearance struck him as being typical of Bengali refugees. This movie was not a perfect movie and definitely not a flawless one but as we look at the time 1960′s, things can be ignored. This was definitely a work of art which is worth admiring. Ok, there is something I want to confess I’m not used to watching B&W movies so it was quit a task for me. Especially the sound which I can't seem to understand not only in this movie but in any other old B&W though I didn't needed that as I can’t speak Bengali and I would have still asked for subtitles. Overall it is a movie that should be watched before arranging a dinner date with Yama.
 That’s all for this week!

Virtual meetings, Wonder Woman, WarriOrb & Austism Studies
Welcome, to the World of TOMOROOOW!
What does listening to a podcast have to do with listening to your boss? Science is now showing benefits to virtual meetings. Which means one day, even your boss might be replaced by a voice over the wire. This still doesn't mean you can get out of wearing pants.
Wonder Woman's director thinks DC shouldn't follow the tried and true MCU formula. Sure, it worked for them, but can it be pulled off twice? Let us know if you have a good argument for there being room for two comic cinematic universes.
WarriOrb is a new game that's just been released on Steam. But following a highly popular demo, WarriOrb's initial sales have been disappointingly low. The devs have posted their own analysis on Reddit, and they're understandably confused.
Wrapping up, we have a discussion about scientific studies involving Autistic people.
We played Crysis and Legends of Runeterra this week. Professor's computer didn't melt playing Crysis, and DJ isn't any better at counting cards.
Wait around to hear from us next week with another great episode.

4th May 1938 - Kanō Jigorō - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kan%C5%8D_Jigor%C5%8D
Japanese educator and athlete, the founder of Judo. Judo was the first Japanese martial art to gain widespread international recognition, and the first to become an official Olympic sport.Pedagogical innovations attributed to Kanō include the use of black and white belts, and the introduction of dan ranking to show the relative ranking among members of a martial art style.
In 1915, Kanō gave this definition to judo:
“Judo is the way of the highest or most efficient use of both physical and mental energy. Through training in the attack and defence techniques of judo, the practitioner nurtures their physical and mental strength, and gradually embodies the essence of the Way of Judo. Thus, the ultimate objective of Judo discipline is to be utilized as a means to self-perfection, and thenceforth to make a positive contribution to society.”
In his professional life, Kanō was an educator. Important postings included serving as director of primary education for the Ministry of Education from 1898 to 1901, and as president of Tokyo Higher Normal School from 1900 until 1920. He played a key role in making judo and kendo part of the Japanese public school programs of the 1910s. Kanō was also a pioneer of international sports. Accomplishments included being the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) (he served from 1909 until 1938); officially representing Japan at most Olympic Games held between 1912 and 1936; and serving as a leading spokesman for Japan's bid for the 1940 Olympic Games.

4th May 2008 - Fred Baur - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Baur
Fredric John Baur, Americanorganic chemist and food storage technician notable for designing and patenting the Pringles packaging. Baur filed for a patent for the tubular Pringles container and for the method of packaging the curved, stacked chips in the container in 1966, and it was granted in 1970. His other accomplishments included development of frying oils and freeze-dried ice cream. Some of Baur's ashes were buried in a Pringles can at his request. Baur's children said they honored his request to bury him in one of the cans by placing part of his cremated remains in a Pringles container in his grave in suburban Springfield Township. The rest of his remains were placed in an urn buried along with the can, with some placed in another urn and given to one of Baur's grandchildren. He died at the age of 89 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Famous Birthdays
4th May 1655 - Bartolomeo Cristofori - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartolomeo_Cristofori
Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco, Italian maker of musical instruments famous for inventing the piano. During the remaining years of the 17th century, Cristofori invented two keyboard instruments before he began his work on the piano. The spinettone, Italian for "big spinet", was a large, multi-choired spinet (a harpsichord in which the strings are slanted to save space), with disposition 1 x 8', 1 x 4'; most spinets have the simple disposition 1 x 8'. This invention may have been meant to fit into a crowded orchestra pit for theatrical performances, while having the louder sound of a multi-choired instrument. The other invention was the highly original oval spinet, a kind of virginal with the longest strings in the middle of the case. It was thought for some time that the earliest mention of the piano is from a diary of Francesco Mannucci, a Medici court musician, indicating that Cristofori was already working on the piano by 1698. The first unambiguous evidence for the piano comes from the 1700 inventory of the Medici mentioned in the preceding section. The entry in this inventory for Cristofori's piano begins as follows:
Un Arpicembalo di Bartolomeo Cristofori di nuova inventione, che fa' il piano, e il forte, a due registri principali unisoni, con fondo di cipresso senza rosa..." (boldface added)
An "Arpicembalo" by Bartolomeo Cristofori, of new invention that produces soft and loud, with two sets of strings at unison pitch, with soundboard of cypress without rose..."
The Medici inventory goes on to describe the instrument in considerable detail. The range of this (now lost) instrument was four octaves, C to c″″′, a standard (if slightly small) compass for harpsichords. He was born in Padua,Republic of Venice.
4 May 1852 - Alice Liddell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Liddell
Alice Pleasance Hargreaves, was, in her childhood, an acquaintance and photography subject of Lewis Carroll. One of the stories he told her during a boating trip became the children's classic 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. On 4 July 1862, in a rowing boat travelling on the Isis from Folly Bridge,Oxford, to Godstow for a picnic outing, 10-year-old Alice asked Charles Dodgson (who wrote under the pen name Lewis Carroll) to entertain her and her sisters, Edith and Lorina, with a story. As the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed the boat, Dodgson regaled the girls with fantastic stories of a girl, named Alice, and her adventures after she fell into a rabbit-hole. The story was not unlike those Dodgson had spun for the sisters before, but this time Liddell asked Mr. Dodgson to write it down for her. He promised to do so but did not get around to the task for some months. He eventually presented her with the manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground in November 1864. The extent to which Dodgson's Alice may be or could be identified with Liddell is controversial. The two Alices are clearly not identical, and though it was long assumed that the fictional Alice was based very heavily on Liddell, recent research has contradicted this assumption. She was born in Westminster, London
4 May 1966 - Jane McGrath - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_McGrath
Jane Louise McGrath, England-bornAustralian cancer support campaigner, and the wife of former Australian cricket fast bowler Glenn McGrath. In 2005 Glenn and Jane McGrath founded the McGrath Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to raising money to fund breast care nurses in rural and regional Australia, and to increase breast awareness in young women. As of December 2018, 120 McGrath breast care nurses have been placed in communities throughout Australia, supporting over 67,000 Australian families experiencing breast cancer. The third day of the first Sydney test cricket match at the Sydney Cricket Ground each year is now known as Jane McGrath Day, where money is raised for the McGrath Foundation. Spectators at the SCG wear pink to show their support and sponsor logos in various places are also recoloured pink for the match. On 5 January 2013, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced an $18.5 million donation to the McGrath Foundation from the Australian Government. The funding allowed all 44 existing McGrath breast care nurse positions to continue and expand the program by 10 full-time equivalent places. She was born in Paignton, Devon.

2nd May 1970 - 50th anniversary of Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman at the Kentucky Derby - https://theathletic.co.uk/1783460/2020/04/30/an-inside-look-at-how-sports-shaped-hunter-s-thompsons-gonzo-journalism/
“The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved" is a seminal sports article written by Hunter S. Thompson on the 1970 Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky, first appearing in an issue of Scanlan's Monthly in June of that year. Though not known at the time, the article marked the first appearance of gonzo journalism, the style that Thompson came to epitomize through the 1970s. The genesis of the article has been described by Thompson as akin to "falling down an elevator shaft and landing in a pool of mermaids." Accompanied by Ralph Steadman's sketches (the first of many collaborations between Thompson and Steadman), the resulting story, and the manic, first-person subjectivity that characterized it, were the beginnings of the gonzo style of journalism. The article is less about the actual race itself – indeed, Thompson and Steadman could not actually see the race from their standpoint – but rather focuses on the celebration and depravity that surrounds the event. Thompson's depiction includes the events in Louisville (his home town) in the days before and after the Derby, and Steadman captured the debauched atmosphere in his surreal drawings. Thompson provided up-close views of activities in the Derby infield and grandstand at Churchill Downs, and a running commentary on the drunkenness and lewdness of the crowd, which he states in the article as the only thing he was focusing on with the work. The narrative ends with a bittersweet anagnorisis, somewhat common in Thompson's work; after several days of immersing themselves in raucous partying and alcoholism to get a sense of the event, Thompson and Steadman realize that they have become exactly the type of people they originally planned to caricature.
4th May 1961 – Malcolm Ross and Victor Prather attain a new altitude record for manned balloon flight ascending in the Strato-Lab V open gondola to 113,740 feet (34.67 km). - https://www.patriotspoint.org/news-and-events/world-record-balloon-flight-set-by-navy-at-113739-9-feet/
On 04 May 1961 Navy balloon pilot Commander Malcolm Ross and flight surgeon Lieutenant Commander Victor Prather (MC)  ascended to the world record height of 113,739.9 feet above sea level in their open gondola Strato-Lab. This record still holds today in 2011 for manned balloon ascent. The record-setting flight on 04 May 1961 from the USS Antietam was scheduled to test the new Navy Mark IV pressure suit. The Mark IV suit’s performance impressed NASA scientists and a modified version was selected  for use by the Project Mercury astronauts.  Strato-Lab remained in the air for 9 hours 54 minutes, and covered a horizontal distance of 140 miles during its flight.  The research goals of the flight were successful, unfortunately LCDR Prather drowned when he slipped into the water and his pressure suit filled with seawater.
4th May 2013 - Dr. Who And The Daleks enjoyed a rare theatrical re-release - https://www.scifihistory.net/may-4.html
On this day in 2013 (in the United Kingdom), 1965's Dr. Who And The Daleks enjoyed a rare theatrical re-release.  The feature starred Peter Cushing as the signature Timelord, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"An eccentric inventor and his companions travel in his TARDIS to the Planet Skaro and battle the evil menace of the Daleks."
It was followed by Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. Filmed in Technicolor, it is the first Doctor Who story to be made in colour and in a widescreen format. The film was not intended to form part of the ongoing story-lines of the television series. Elements from the programme are used, however, such as various characters, the Daleks and a police box time machine, albeit in re-imagined forms. The Daleks were redesigned slightly for the film. They had larger base sections, which made them taller and more imposing than the TV Daleks, which were only about five feet high. They had large, red dome lights and some were fitted with a two-jawed mechanical claw instead of a plunger. They also had more colourful paint schemes. Standard Daleks had blue domes, skirt balls and fenders, and gold collars. A Dalek leader was painted predominantly black and a second-in-command in red. Originally the Daleks were to be armed with flamethrowers, but these were vetoed on health and safety grounds and because they were considered too frightening for a young audience. Instead, the guns produced jets of CO2 gas from internally mounted fire extinguishers. Some of the Daleks used in the background for crowd scenes were constructed from moulded fibreglass, and can be distinguished by the slightly different shape of the collars around their midsections.

'Angrezi Medium' box office collection day 3: Coronavirus outbreak has a massive impact on Irrfan Khan's film; earns Rs 2.25 crore - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/angrezi-medium-box-office-collection-day-3-coronavirus-outbreak-has-a-massive-impact-on-irrfan-khans-film-earns-rs-2-25-crore-times-of-india/
'Angrezi Medium' box office collection day 3: Coronavirus outbreak has a massive impact on Irrfan Khan's film; earns Rs 2.25 crore - Times of India
Homi Adajania’s ‘Angrezi Medium‘ was one of the most anticipated films of 2020 as it marked the return of talented actor Irrfan Khan on the silver screen. But looks like the Coronavirus outbreak has impacted the film’s collection as it has managed to earn just Rs 2.25 crore on it’s first Sunday.
Angrezi Medium Movie Review : An emotional story packed with powerful performances
According to the latest Box Office India report, the film has reached a total of Rs 9 crore from its first weekend at the box office. With several theatres in places like Delhi, Jammu and Kerala being shut, the film has managed to find a few screens in parts of Maharashtra, UP, Haryana, West Bengal and Chandigarh and Tamil Nadu. The places like Gurgaon, Noida and Chandigarh which could have been the best markets for the film to excel in have failed to allure the audience despite remaining open all weekend. Taking to social media, director of Adajania had announced that the film will be re-released in India. He had written, “At midnight all theatres will close across India till the authorities give us further notice. We will re-release Angrezi Medium when it is safe to do so. Till then stay safe and be kind to each other.”
With the ongoing scenario, several producers have pushed the release of their films to later dates in order to avoid loss at the box office. Not only Bollywood but even Hollywood films like ‘Fast and Furious 9’, ‘No Time to Die’ and others have also been postponed.
To contain the spread of coronavirus, film bodies in India including Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE), Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) and Producers Guild of India have taken the decision to put the shoots of films, TV shows and web shows on hold till March 31.

These Heroes Were Paid Hefty Sums For Their Biopics
These Heroes Were Paid Hefty Sums For Their Biopics Bency Sebastian Hyderabd040-395603080 January 29, 2020
Biopics are interesting movies and are well received by audiences because they are informative, real and have a moral at the end of the movie. They are inspired by real life and have a way of emotionally connecting with the audience. With Bollywood being popularly known for its masala and drama, biopics are out-of-the-box movies that keep it real with the audience and show us what life is. Be it movies like The Dirty Picture that portrays popular actress Silk Smitha’s life or the movie Bandit Queen that shows us the crass reality of the life of the famous Phoolan Devi, biopics have a way of staying with us in some way even after the movie. Some of these biopics are made on the lives of people who have passed on from this world and others on living heroes who have been an inspiration in our lives.
However, no matter what the movie is on, in the end, it’s a business. This is exactly why the people whose story is used to earn profits at the box office are given a certain amount of money. Here are a few heroes who have been remunerated for sharing details of their lives with us and given Bollywood a chance to capture their beautiful journey through these movies.
1. Mahavir Singh Phogat
India Today
Popular sports biopic Dangal is based on the life of the Phogat family. The movie focuses on Mahavir Singh Phogat’s quest to train his daughters in wrestling to win a gold medal on an international level. Mahavir is played by Aamir Khan and the biopic is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It was released all over the world and became a huge success. The movie made about 240 crores in just nine days and Mahavir Singh was paid a lump sum amount of Rs. 80 lakhs.
2. Milkha Singh
Hindustan Times
Another sports biopic and the first of its kind in India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The protagonist is played by heartthrob Farhan Akhtar and as the title suggests, it is based on the life of the famous Milkha Singh. Not only was the movie a super-duper hit but it also filled our hearts with pride knowing that we have such a hero in our country. The fact that surprised us the most was that the “Flying Singh”, as he is called, charged merely Rs. 1 in the form of notes that were printed in 1985. However, the makers of the film had promised to give this unsung hero 10% but they failed to fulfill their promise (1).
3. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
India Today
Whether you are a cricket fan or not, Dhoni is a name we all know. M.S Dhoni: The Untold Story is based on the life of the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The biopic was directed by Neeraj Pandey and shares some insights and lesser-known facts on Dhoni’s life beyond his career in cricket. He is played by the adorable and very talented Sushant Singh Rajput who portrayed Dhoni’s life so well that it won the hearts of the audience worldwide. Dhoni charged a whopping amount of Rs. 80 crores to share details of his real-life for the movie.
4. Mary Kom
Economic Times
Just as the title suggests, this sports biopic is based on the life of the former Indian Olympic boxer Mary Kom. The film features Priyanka Chopra as Mary Kom and it depicts the struggles she faced while pursuing her career as a boxer and making it all the way to represent India in the Olympics. It was directed by Omung Kumar and is one of the best sports biopic movies of all time. The film was a huge success and it made over 100 crores globally but Mary Kom received a sum of Rs. 25 lakhs only.
5. Sachin Tendulkar
God of Cricket as he is called, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s life was made into a documentary called Sachin: A Billion Dreams. It was released in 2017 in India and although it was not a film, it made over 7 crores in just two days. For all Tendulkar fans, this documentary is a treat that makes you laugh, sing and sob along with your most inspiring sports hero. He charged about Rs. 40 crores for this documentary and we don’t think it is too much because he is worth so much more!
6. Paan Singh Tomar
India Today
We know that corruption is rooted in our society when it penetrates something as pure as the sports industry. A must watch, Paan Singh Tomar is based on the life of an Indian athlete who becomes a bandit in the Chambal Valley. Paan Singh was a soldier in the Indian Army who became a renowned bandit. The biopic is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and features the competent Irrfan Khan in the titular role. The gold medalist’s family was given a sum of Rs. 15 lakhs for the movie.
7. Sanjay Dutt
India TV News
Sanju, a biographical drama, was a box office hit and created a storm of success. Directed by Raju Hirani, Sanjay Dutt was played by Ranbir Kapoor in the biopic and it engulfed the audience in an emotional ride on the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt. The biopic made approximately 439 crores and Sanjay Dutt took 10 crores plus parts of the profits from the box office.
Bollywood has made several other biopics that have been received well by the audience but these are the ones who have reaped the benefits. These heroes have shared inspiring stories of their lives to teach us valuable lessons and also managed to make some money out of it. Which is your favorite Bollywood biopic of all time? Let us know in the comments below.

'Sacred Games' will make you crave an Indian golden age of television
New Post has been published on https://click.atak.co/sacred-games-will-make-you-crave-an-indian-golden-age-of-television/
'Sacred Games' will make you crave an Indian golden age of television
If you’re making your first Netflix original, you have to swing big.
This is a tradition that started with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Now, as the company expands its worldwide empire, Netflix India has debuted its first original series: Sacred Games, based on the novel by Vikram Chandra. It’s a big, magnificent swing, and the first season hits it out of the park.
youtube
Sacred Games, based on the novel by Vikram Chandra, is the story of Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a notorious gangster who contacts police officer Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) with a threat against the city of Mumbai. Singh ends up working with federal agent Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) as they try to solve the elusive criminal’s puzzle.
Though Singh is our de facto hero and the knight in shining armor, Gaitonde is the central character, whose life is pieced together in flashbacks throughout the eight episodes.
Structurally, the show is part Da Vinci Code, part Slumdog Millionaire. It also harkens significantly to streaming sibling Narcos, with its use of multiple languages and immersion in the underworld. It bears the unmistakable artistic signature of directors/producers Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, a sensibility found in India’s independent features and short films.
India boasts a voracious film and television audience, but almost all TV shows in India are reality shows or soap operas (“serials”). In 2017, Amazon bet on the sports drama Inside Edge, which performed positively and earned a second season. Notably, Kashyap’s 2012 opus Gangs of Wasseypur (also starring Siddiqui) used to be on Netflix – not as the two four-hour films as which it debuted, but as an eight-episode miniseries.
Sacred Games faces pressure on the international stage, due in part to Netflix’s reach and in part to the popularity of Chandra’s novel.
Though Sacred Games is a rare form of Indian entertainment, it’s hard to imagine Sacred Games in any format besides this series due to the rich craftsmanship of the show. Gaitonde’s world and life are overwhelmingly immersive, as is the ominous trail he leaves for Singh.
There’s an English dub available, but the original Hindi (and sometimes English, Marathi, or Punjabi) is vital to the viewing experience. The dialect is harsh and guttural and curses – whether you understand them or not – sting with the sharpness of their delivery.
It’s also violent – like Game of Thrones violent or Daredevil violent – which may surprise audiences who only know India for colorful song-and-dance rom-coms. But violence has been a staple of Bollywood for decades – it even used to be in those sweeping musicals about love. Though Sacred Games sets up a world in which you expect assault, rape, and gun fights, they fit into Gaitonde’s uncouth reality through careful production and cinematography.
Siddiqui, a proven talent, is nothing short of hypnotic as Gaitonde with all his rage and ambition. (Lion‘s Sunny Pawar plays a young version of the gangster, ensuring he won’t be pigeonholed as “adorable child” for long.) Though not fully a household name even in India, Sacred Games could propel him to the international versatility of an Irrfan Khan or an Anupam Kher.
Apte nails her portrayal of Mathur, perhaps because she makes it so unremarkable. Women on India’s screens are almost always airbrushed, lightened, perhaps wearing colored contracts, and caked in makeup within an inch of their lives. They are a fantasy, but Mathur (and Apte herself) is a real woman, a highly competent women in a competitive field and patriarchal society.
She’s driven by duty and justice while Singh has a more a personal stake (Gaitonde knew his father). Khan, better known for popular commercial films, delivers a subtle performance that is one of his best.
I worked for Khan during production of his 2014 film Happy Ending, and based on conversations at that time it’s clear that Sacred Games is the kind of project he’s spent years trying to find. He was frustrated with the stagnancy of commercial Bollywood and the lack of new stories to tell, intrigued by darkness and folklore, which interweave subtly throughout Sacred Games.
With such a powerful debut, Sacred Games sets an impressive bar for India’s Netflix originals, and creates a show unlike anything else available on the streaming platform. With the stars’ tight film schedules, a second season might be challenging, but Netflix is undoubtedly eyeing it. You’ll want it too, after you take a breather for this one. This game is not for the faint of heart.
Sacred Games is now streaming on Netflix.
