iwtv is insanity inducing bc every time you google some reference in it you find out theyre doing some 4d chess with the symbolism… like okay playing roosevelt's speech about the us joining ww2 in the background as claudia tells louis shes gonna kill lestat is pretty straightforward, and of course the chess game theyre playing foreshadows how she beats him in the next episode but doesn't "finish the game" ie burn him. and bc claudia later compares lestat to the nazis/hitler, that obviously makes lestat germany and thus claudia is poland and louis is the us/roosevelt in the speech we hear: "I had hoped against hope that some miracle would prevent a devastating war in Europe and bring to an end the invasion of Poland by Germany" etc. BUT THEN you get nerdy and google some of the chess terms lestat uses like the dutch defense and stonewalling which is pretty interesting and then you vaguely remember one of the writers said the scene was based on some famous chess game, and you realize it must be glücksberg vs miguel najdorf which turns out to be literally called the POLISH IMMORTAL. najdorf was polish and glücksberg is some unknown but based on the name likely german. this was najdorf's first famous game, at the beginning of his career when he was only like 19 or something although we dont know the exact details of the game (and ofc you watch a few videos on the polish immortal and they all heavily criticize glücksberg's moves which makes lestat's arrogance even funnier) and ALSO, in 1939 (literally at the same time as the chess scene takes place) najdorf was participating in a chess tournament in buenos aires and since he was not only polish but also jewish, he stayed there rather than return home. his whole family was killed in the holocaust but he lived a long life in argentina. why is this relevant? because BUENOS AIRES which btw lestat also calls "la reina del plata" so you google that and find the 1930 song by carlos gardel and the lyrics are literally— anyway so buenos aires is where lestat planned for them to move to in ep7. perhaps if they had indeed gone to argentina instead of europe… well… perhaps… perhaps…

“Their bond is stronger than the vampire bond. They share blood, they share a heartbeat. Louis and Lestat are so deeply connected to one another but he knows that Louis does have this temper that drives Lestat wild.” - Sam Reid

Théâtre du Grand-Guignol & Théâtre des Vampires: Blood, horror, and drama.
We know for a fact that Mara LePere-Schloop drew her inspiration for AMC’s Théâtre des Vampires from the historical Paris’ Grand-Guignol, so let’s talk about this.
Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol was founded in 1897 by Oscar Méténier. The théâtre was located in 7 Cité Chaptal, just blocks away from where the famous Moulin Rouge stands today. This goes in line with IwtV’s production design for the Théâtre des Vampires, except the location is not #7, but #7½. A theatre inside a theatre.

To get to the original Grand-Guignol one had to go down a long, often foggy, and dimly lit cobblestone alley. This alley stood in the midst of the most crime-ridden area of Paris, making the experience of arriving one of dread, unease, and foreboding. This goes in line with the set prepared for the series, located at the end of a narrow alley.

The historical Grand-Guignol had 293 seats, and it constituted in its time the smallest venue in Paris. The theatre was located in a long-ago desanctified chapel, its former life was evident in the boxes–which looked like confessionals–and in the angels over the orchestra. Underneath the balcony were boxes (originally built for nuns to watch church services) that were available for theatre-goers to rent during performances. Even the general seats were much like those of pews.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Grand-Guignol became known for its horror plays with gory effects. The horrors depicted were generally not supernatural; rather these plays often explored altered states like insanity, hypnosis, or panic. To heighten the effect, the horror plays were often alternated with comedies, a lineup referred to as "hot and cold showers." There were audience members who could not physically handle the brutality of the actions taking place on stage. Frequently, the "special effects" would be too realistic and often an audience member would faint or vomit during performances.

Theater director Max Maurey used the goriness to his advantage by hiring doctors to be at performances as a marketing ploy. This would explain the notice on the Théâtre des Vampires' set indicating "medical examination before the show".

People came to this theatre for an experience, not only to see a show. The audience at the Grand-Guignol endured the terror of the shows and many attended the shows to get a feeling of sexual arousal. All of this is mere historical data, but it proves we will be getting very interesting plays / backstage drama for season 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Louis and Claudia arrive in Paris in November 1945, more than a year after the liberation of Paris, and more than two months after the official end of World War II. Grand-Guignol’s peak was between World War I and World War II, but audiences waned in the years following World War II.
Tumblr media
As in canon, the Théâtre des Vampires is in a decadent state when Louis and Claudia arrive in Paris. Armand is fed up with it and is ready to move on. This would explain the fading/missing lights in the facade of the set.
Now, for possible spoilers / speculation. The Grand-Guignol closed its doors in 1962 and this might be the approximate date of the closing of the Théâtre des Vampires (and of Claudia’s final "play" and Louis’s revenge). Louis and Armand met Daniel in San Francisco in 1974, so it would go in line with the canon theme of them “wandering the world” after leaving Paris.
One thing’s certain. Whatever the timeline or the final play in the theatre, Mara and the entire production design team outdid themselves and deserve all the praise. Now all we have to do is be patient until we get to enjoy Interview with the Vampire season 2 with the amazingly horrifying spectacle that will be the Théâtre des Vampires.

Diary, you’d think a girl whose mama died in childbirth, whose daddy gave her away to a mean old auntie who beat her ‘cause no one said she couldn’t, who died in a fire but came back by the blood magic of two demons, well, you’d think that girl wouldn’t know what funny was. But you’d be wrong, diary. And if I told you, dumb diary, that that same girl was being raised to kill like her demon parents did, to take two souls a day so she could stay in the same flat-chested, hairless-crotched 14-year-old baby doll body as her mind and spirit turn 19, 20, 25, 63, 358, you dumb, dumb diary, I bet you’d say to anyone who’d listen, “Fun? Fun? How does she even get up in the morning?” Well, let me tell you something, you stuck-up, flower-covered, three-dollar fancy fucking paper diary, I’m doin’ just fine. And how do I know that? ‘Cause the first man I killed called me the devil, and the last boy I killed, the last boy I’ll ever love in the world, called me an angel. So that means I’m on the right path. And that means there’s so much more fun out there to have. I’m just getting started.
