I have recently been enjoying Japanese TV shows streaming on Netflix. I now frequent Netflix for its extensive collection of jdramas and anime.
I completed watching Life's Punchline (Konto ga Hajimaru), which was released in the spring of 2021, a beloved TV series of one of my favourite actors. Due to my admiration for Kamiki Ryunosuke, I initially became involved, but soon fell in love with both the plot and characters. The series follows five individuals in their late twenties as they strive against personal setbacks.
For the previous 10 years, the comedy troupe Macbeth (Makubesu) was unsuccessful, with its three main characters comprising the group. The comedy trio involves two sisters as additional characters. One sister struggled with depression due to work-related trauma, while the other maintained part-time employment, still searching for her career path.
Each character resonates with the audience in some capacity. The older sister's character resonates most with me, yet I find all the other characters equally relatable.
I also loved the way the actors portrayed their characters. They look so natural in my eyes. And it felt like I was simply watching recorded video clips of actual people who are trying to achieve a happy life.
If you're intrigued by jdramas, consider watching this series. Just like me, if you're unsure of your next steps in life. This series might suit you. Be prepared with tissues though while watching this because it will definitely make you cry.

It's insane when you look back at Mr. Hiiragi's Homeroom, you realize how deep of a cast that drama really had.
Masaki Suda was the main star, but in retrospect, so many actresses in that series have went on to become pretty popular well known actresses today!
Mei Nagano, Mayu Hotta, Moka Kamishiraishi, Mio Imada, Haruka Fukuhara….

Apart from The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, I would like to share three of my favorite 2023 jdramas.
1. Brush Up Life ( On Netflix, its title is Rebooting).
This is a heartwarming slice-of-life comedy starring Sakura Ando and Kaho (with Haru Kuroki, Shota Sometani, and Tori Matsuzaka as minor characters). It focuses on female friendship.
2. Fence - Compared to Brush Up Life, Fence has heavy themes such as sexual assault, PTSD, war, and racism/discrimination. It is also brilliantly acted by Mayu Matsuoka and Ariana Miyamoto. This is penned by the same writer of The Full-time Wife Escapist, so it has a feminist and multi-layered narrative.
3. Nagatan to Ao to
This is a healing food jdrama/ noona romance which chronicles the journey of Ichika who was forced to enter an arranged marriage to save their family-owned restaurant. It also features her struggles as a woman as she assumes the role of the head chef. This was top billed by Mugi Kadowaki.

I don't know what came over me, but last week, suddenly, I miss seeing YamaPi and Ikuta Toma. For YamaPi, I slightly remember him being one of the cast of Alice in Borderland, so I planned to watch it after I finished Doctor Cha.
For Ikuta Toma, I didn't really know what movie or jdorama he starred in recently. So I browse for his filmography, and unintentionally got sucked down by multiple clips, videos and trailers for his movies.
Now, I'm just happy for him to saw that his list movies and dorama is long. He is striving in the entertainment industry. But, as I watched his movie 'Sensei' (My Teacher), I was in awe of his acting. He portrayed his character so well. Mature and really thread his student's love so gently.
Tumblr media
I can see why his student fall hard for him. He portrayed this character to become a teacher that give no-nonsense, straight to the point, but at the same time caring for his student, and exudes sexiness even when he just sitting there and reading a book (or when he lay asleep).
Tumblr media
This is my favorite scene, it was the conversation on the bridge at the last part of the movie. He try to control his emotion so that the KISS (that we all hope and see coming) didn't happen again. He lose control on the roof, but he try to not make the same mistake again.
In summary, this is a gentle love story. I really hope this also include character development and come off as a bit of 'coming of age' movie, but no, this is just a love story movie.
I won't lie, I also think that I don't find the reason why Ito-sensei fall in love with his Shimada is enough to cross that boundaries of student-teacher relationship. As an adult, who's now aware of 'social consequences' term, I didn't see or feel strong feeling, or connection, or chemistry that make Ito-sensei eventually fall for his student. Their relationship lack of something irresistible that drawn a teacher to his student, enough to not give a f**k about social norm.
But, if I put my feet in Shimada's shoes... God, how can someone be human and not fall so hard for a teacher like Ito-sensei? And maybe that's what this movie aim for? I don't know, I'm just here enjoying Ikuta Toma visual.
In my language, this is what we called CLBK. Cinta Lama Bersemi Kembali. I remember being smitten by Ikuta Toma when I watched him in Hana-Kimi, and now I can't take my eyes off him when he become more mature. He's really aging fine.
