Wadsworth A. Jarrell’s Revolutionary (Angela Davis), 1971, spotted at Brooklyn Museum in 2020, is based off of a photograph of the activist.  The colorful painting includes words from her speeches and actual bullet cartridges.
From the museum about the work-
Wadsworth Jarrell’s Revolutionary (Angela Davis) is one of the most recognized paintings associated with the Black Arts Movement, a cultural manifestation of the Black Power Movement. Artists of this movement sought to create uplifting images that called upon Black people to harness their collective power. The power of communal action is here expressed through a chromatic swirl of individual colors that coalesce into a unified image of the radical activist and intellectual Angela Davis. Davis’s militant clothing—complete with bullet cartridges—was modeled after the Revolutionary Suit designed by artist Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth’s wife. An icon of Black Power, Davis continues to lead the prison abolition movement today.
Jarrell, along with his wife, is part of the African American artist collective AFRICOBRA, formed in Chicago in 1968.
Below is part of a statement about the group from their website by another of the founders, Gerald Williams.
AFRICOBRA began very loosely in 1968 as an association of visual artists. We decided to commit our selves to the collective exploration, development, and perpetuation of an approach to image making which would reflect and project the moods, attitudes, and sensibilities of African Americans independent of the technical and aesthetic strictures of Euro-centric modalities.  Jeff Donaldson, who spearheaded the movement,Wadsworth Jarrell, Jae Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and myself, Gerald Williams opened the lid on what we called AFRICOBRA – African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists.  It was an original name that came to identify our place within the broader context of Black art.
Our mission was to encapsulate the quintessential features of African-American consciousness and world view as reflected in real time 1968 terms.  For months, beginning as early as 1967, we examined and talked about the forms of expression and images produced by previous generations of artists.  We came to the realization that there was not the existence of a consistent, unequivocal, uniquely Black aesthetic in visual arts as there was in other disciplines, notably music and dance. Many of our contemporary artists, at the time, generally said that they “were artists who happened to be black”, or held the view that their work was expressing universal ideas or concepts that were not tied to such a narrow category as Black art.   The notion of an intrinsically Black view point, expressed in characteristically “Black ways”  was a relatively alien idea for the most part.  That notion begged the question as to whether it was possible to create a style or approach to art that at its core could be identified as African-American or Black, notwithstanding  the presence of Black imagery or subject matter.  If imagery and subject matter were the sole criteria then the question was moot.  One could conclude, thereby, that Winslow Homer or any number of artists produced Black art when they painted Black images.  After numerous brain storming sessions where such topics were discussed, after test projects and critiques,  the five of us mapped out the core principles that became the foundation of AFRICOBRA.

"Mini Korea-Japan match" Kim Min-jae Pass miss → Minamino 1 goal + Judo PK + Highest rating
Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich) and Minamino Takumi (28, AS Monaco) faced each other in a friendly match.
Bayern Munich played the last pre-season friendly against AS Monaco at the Alpenbauer Sports Park in Unterhaching, Bavaria, Germany on the 8th (Korean time). The result was Bayern Munich's 4-2 win. Munich will play the German Super Cup against Leipzig on the 13th.
On this day, Munich came out with a 4-3-3 formation. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich blocked the goal, while Alfonso Davies, Kim Min-jae, Benjamin Pavard and Nusayr Mazrawi stood in defense. In front of him were Conrad Reimer, Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka, and the offense was led by Serge Gnabry, Matisse Tell and Kingsley Comang.
Kim Min-jae started three consecutive pre-season games, starting with Japan's Kawasaki Frontale (1-0 win), Singapore's Liverpool (4-3 win), and this time AS Monaco (AS Monaco). I'm looking forward to how much it will be used in the new season.
In AS Monaco, Minamino Takumi, Wissam Ben Yedder and Aleksandar Golovin attacked, while Yusuf Popana, Kaio Enrique, Guillermo Maripang, Christian Machem and Philippe Wong participated together.
Munich gave up the lead in the 29th minute of the first half. Golobin intercepted Kim Min-jae's pass and connected it with a shot. Goalkeeper Ulaihi defended, but Minomino received the ball and opened the Munich goal with a left-footed shot. In the second half, Minamino even got a penalty kick (PK), and Ben Yedder scored a penalty kick.
In the 31st minute of the first half, Reimer, who received a pass from Musharraf, scored Munich's 1-1 equalizer, and in the 42nd minute, Musharraf scored the opposite goal. Gnabry's net was also broken in extra time in the first half. In the 23rd minute of the second half, 3-2, Leroy Sane scored an additional goal.
Kim Min-jae was replaced by Frans Krachik in the 18th minute of the second half, and Munich replaced 10 players, including Kim Min-jae, in the second half, and was replaced by Kevin Boland in the 24th minute of the second half after inducing AS Monaco's first goal and PK additional goal.
Statistical media "Sofascore" gave Kim Min-jae 6.9 points, the second-highest score among four defenders after Davis (7.1 points), Musiala (8.5 points) in Munich and Minamino (8.1 points) in AS Monaco.

This fall, we’re taking a look at how artists in the Brooklyn Museum collection have promoted civic engagement through their work.
In 1968, artist Wadsworth Jarrell co-founded COBRA (Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists) with his spouse, fashion designer Jae Jarrell, and artists Barbara Jones-Hogu, Jeff Donaldson, and Gerald Williams. Not only did women play central roles in the prominent Black Arts Movement collective—which would later be renamed AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists)—but they were also iconic leaders in the Black Power Movement.
Revolutionary (Angela Davis) depicts the radical activist and revolutionary intellectual, Angela Davis, who, when this was painted, was fighting for her freedom from wrongful imprisonment. The portrait illustrates the intensity and power of Davis’ activism as Wadsworth Jarrell utilizes her words, slogans from the Black Power movement, and AfriCOBRA's signature aesthetic––self-described as "Kool-Aid colors."
The year 1971 was significant for both Jarell and Davis. As Jarrell completed this vibrant artwork, Angela Davis wrote her truth-uncovering piece, "Reflections on the Black Woman's Role in the Community of Slaves." In this piece, Davis “illuminates the historical matrix of Black women's oppression" as enslaved Black Women were expected "to promote the consciousness and practice of resistance" (1971:84) while also "ministering to the needs of [all] men and children around her" (1971:87).
The core of Davis’ words remain true today, as highlighted in entertainer and philanthropist Megan Thee Stallion’s October 2020 piece in the New York Times. Megan discusses society's negligence in acknowledging the labor of Black women throughout American history, echoing Davis’ thoughts on the political expectations and lack of care for Black Women in America, she states, “In the weeks leading up to the [2020] election, Black women are expected once again to deliver victory for Democratic candidates … [Black Women] march for everyone else, riot for everyone else, die for everyone else, love for everyone else, but when it comes down to her, there ain’t a [person] in sight.” (New York Times: 2020)
Wadsworth Jarrell’s "Revolutionary (Angela Davis)" serves as an example of how art can be used to acknowledge and celebrate the often overlooked social and political contributions of Black women.
Fifty years later, Angela Yvonne Davis continues to be a leader in the fight for global intersectional justice.

Brooklyn Museum’s: “We Wanted A Revolution: Black Radical Women 1965-1985” Exhibition
By Antonette Ayton
September 17, 2017
Tumblr media
Revolutionary (Angela Davis), 1971 by Wadsworth A. Jarrell
Cataloging the work of more than 40 artists and activist spanning 1965-1985, the exhibition, We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum, concentrates on the black female perspective. Through the expression of subversive methodologies within shifting socio-cultural paradigms, dualities are explored through a range of mediums both texturally and temporally. Resistance is a common thread throughout the work, whether, subtly being expressed within introspective pieces exploring identity politics, or staunchly in opposition to wider systems of oppression. Collectively the exhibition showcases the spectrum of the black female experience, whilst capturing the ways in which banal gestures such as rocking an afro can become radicalized.
The definition of revolution, a forcible overthrow of a government or a social order in favor of a new system, does not fully capture the breathe of resistance within the Black Female experience. Rather its Latin root, revolvere which translates to roll back, starts to unpack suggested nuances. Riots, protesting, civil unrest and war may have shaped national sentiment within 1960’s America, but the motifs explored within this exhibition transcends that. Traversing the landscape of identity politics, as well as racial and social disparities, the viewer is presented with many layers of engagement between the artists and these social constructs.
The exhibition commences with various works from the Black Arts Movement. Politically motivated, the movement was populated with distinct art collectives such as the Spiral Art Group, and Afri-COBRA. Serving as a reflection of the collective Black consciousness and socio-political strife, works created, complemented the Black Power Movement. Empowerment and black nationalism were promoted as a way of advancement, therein, rejecting assimilation as the road to social acceptance within wider culture. Rather, knowledge and awareness of oneself and one's history would provide an alternate path.
Tumblr media
Committee to Defend the Black Panthers, 1970 by Faith Ringgold
Artistically bucking the trend of widespread modernism with the art world, Afri-COBRA, in particular, dismissed tenets of ‘art for art sake’ and instead focused on the creation of work which was socially motivated. Reflected in the creation of posters via printmaking, members such as Barbara Jones-Hogu captured the communal spirit of resistance in posters such as “Unite”. Serving as a call to action, the artwork as well as the method of printmaking allowed for a rebellious sense of activism. Working outside of the constructs of the commercialized art world, printmaking allowed for easy dissemination of the work within their respective communities, making the artists revolutionaries in their own right. Democratizing the art allowed for the collective and other artists to promote an agenda of Black pride while forging their own space within the art world.

Black Men We Need You, 1971 by Barbara Jones-Hogu
The uprising of communal solidarity amongst the Black-American population lead to a repudiation of White cultural precedents. Influenced by Pan-Africanism, and different depictions of black beauty, many women began to reject idealized European beauty and traded in their wigs and straight hair for Afros. Looking introspectively at common themes of oppression across the African diaspora, many began to embrace the militant convictions of Black nationalistic sentiment which was reflected in many cultural aspects, from the art to the fashion. This was captured on the cover of magazines such as Jet, and also within artistic motifs.

Tumblr media
Ebony Family, 1968 by Jae Jarrell
Reflecting the collective consciousness, many pieces captured iconic symbols of the time. Gestures such as the Black Power Salute were widely used in popular culture, showing a dedication to the resistance by simply raising a clenched fist. Expressed within a range of mediums throughout the exhibition, a sculpture, Homage to My Young Black Sisters (1968), by Elizabeth Catlett, offers a more suggestive approach. Drawing direct inspiration from the historic event at the Summer Olympics of that year, Black-American medalists boldly held their fists high. Referencing this moment as well as the comradery amongst black females within the art world, spanning generations and geographic borders, Catlett visualized the experience navigating these social movements and spaces. Craving sinuous forms within cedar and manipulating the perception of negative and positive space, she highlighted the spirit of resistance within the salute, whilst delineating space for females within the revolution.
Tumblr media
Homage to My Young Black Sisters, 1968 by Elizabeth Catlett
The act of creating art as a black female was radical in itself. Culture became a tool of resistance and within the 1970, focus shifted from combating racial inequality to that of gender equity. Second wave feminism emerged to the forefront and women of color were brought into the fold. However the overarching narrative was controlled by white middle class women, thereby eclipsing the cultural experience of black women. Race was inextricably linked to black female expression but the inclusion of race relations within the space of feminism was denounced. Feeling displaced and frankly suspicious of the movement, an introspective shift occurred which was mirrored within the artist works produced. The assortment of work from this period captured recurring motifs of duality and redefinition. Less traditional mediums such as conceptual art, performance, film, and video were explored alongside photography and painting.
Tumblr media
Sapphire, 1985 by Alison Saar
Seeking to deconstruct stereotypical tropes whilst also carving out space within the art world, black women demonstrated a level of perseverance. While the larger feminist movement gave white women a voice within the art world, their black counterparts were not extended the same visibility. Traditional artistic spaces such as galleries and museums were reluctant to showcase their work and rather than simply protest, many women followed their predecessors and banded together to create their own art collectives. Groups such as “Where We At” featured artists like  Kay Brown. Meanwhile groups such as the “Combahee River Collective” focused on advancing the agenda of black feminism, in response to the misogynistic tenor of the Black Power Movement, and the false promise of second wave feminism.  Aiming to reorient the conversation of identity politics, “Black Feminism”, later garnered the title of Womanist within the 80’s, thereby recognizing and differentiating culturally specific goals of the black female community.

Kick of Life, 1974 by Kay Brown
Depth and multiplicity are explored through many introspective works featured in the exhibition, showcasing the breadth of the black female experience. Counteracting social tropes imbued within figures such as Aunt Jemima,  artist used their work to address racial and identity politics. With a sense of urgency, artists such as Lorraine O’Grady transformed her mere act of protest into performance art with the conception of Mlle Bourgeoise Noire (1981), as she sought to end systematic oppression within art. Making a declaration for a change to the social order, the masses were informed that black female artists had something to say. Rather than simply seeking recognition from their peers within the industry, they called for a reconfiguration of ingrained systematic oppression.

The Liberation of Aunt Jemima: Cocktail, (1973) by Betye Saar
Juxtaposing the resounding outspoken nature of O’Grady, the photographic works of Ming Smith capture banal yet intimate moments of her subjects. Evident within Grace Mirror (1978), an atypical level of vulnerability is framed within intrapersonal moments whilst displaying a level of resilience. Expressing duality, social misconceptions of black women are challenged by Smith. Alongside, fellow artists continued to explore identity and misrepresentation within narratives which drove cultural perception. Aspiring to deconstruct these notions text, words and phrases were cop-opted to complement imagery, thereby recontextualizing the prospective discourse.
Tumblr media
Grace Mirror, 1978 by Ming Smith
Combining text and imagery, set upon the timely arrival of mixed media and postmodernism within the 1980’s. This tool was widely employed by artists such as Lorna Simpson in, Water Bearer (1986), and by Carrie Mae Weems within the series entitled, Ain’t Joking. A captivating photograph, Mirror Mirror (1987) provides a critical perspective into the pressures to conform to  eurocentric beauty ideals. A reflective moment at mirror, displays a failed effort to culturally assimilate. Delving into the subjects’ shortcomings, unattainable beauty standards that are imposed upon black women by wider society are exhibited. In particular, the politics of black women's hair has always been a polarizing force within cultural discourse. Something as futile as wearing ones hair in its natural state became politicized or was viewed as unkempt. Hair as a tool of cultural identity is explored within an animation, Hair Piece (1985), by Ayoka Chenzira. The history, struggles, and repercussions within the pursuit of straight hair are documented in a personable graphic manner. Self expression and identity are inextricably linked with the perception of oneself and by others, thereby posing the age old question of  “Who are you?”

Waterbearer, 1986 by Lorna Simpson
Challenging misrepresentation on the front of identity politics, gender inequity and within racial discrimination concisely captures the purview of this exhibition. We Wanted A Revolution details the undulating road to unachieved actualization through the lens of the radical black female. Art is used as a vehicle, contributing to socio-cultural movements whilst disrupting cultural norms. Showcasing a breadth of artistic expressions and cultural experiences, the complexities of the black female is exhibited. There is a resonance of multiplicity, agency and resilience within the works crafted and in the methods in which they were deployed. Through a celebration of their contributions, a counter-narrative is revealed. A reclamation is underway as the curated works seem more contemporary than ever as activism, cultural identity, and cultural experience are once again at the forefront of the social conversation.

There’s so much Jazz inside the Thunder’s heads you’d think it was 1920s Harlem
Tumblr media
We have that and more in Tuesday’s NBA newsletter.
The Jazz didn’t have commanding control of their series with the Thunder going into Monday’s Game 4, but apparently they had full control of the space inside OKC’s collective head. After Russell Westbrook declared he would shut down Ricky “Rick” Rubio, the Thunder crumbled under the weight of dynamo rookie Donovan Mitchell, Aussie smoke machine Joe Ingles, and their own impending doom. The Jazz won 113-96.
The game was most notable for the immense amount of anger and frustration exhibited all night, particularly by OKC. Paul George and Ingles were handsy and chatty all night (each had a technical -- PG probably could have had a couple had the refs absolutely not wanted to kick anyone out until they had to). Jae Crowder caught Steven Adams with an elbow while facing up with other OKC players. Adams didn’t flinch and Crowder hit the showers. Westbrook tried to intimidate Rubio and Rubio really didn’t flinch (though statistically he didn’t have nearly as good a game as in Game 3).
OKC is in a precarious place. Losing this series on their home court in Game 5 would be painful, and could cost the team Paul George this summer. Carmelo Anthony’s $27 million player option looks like a tougher pill to swallow every day. Things are not well in Thunderland right now. Can Westbrook or PG snap them free? The first step is to evict the Jazz out of their skulls. Good luck.
Monday’s Scores
Rockets 119, Timberwolves 100 Houston leads 3-1 Recaps: The Dream Shake | Canis Hoopus
Jazz 113, Thunder 96 Utah leads 3-1 Recaps: SLC Dunk | Welcome To Loud City
Tuesday’s Schedule
Bucks at Celtics, 7 p.m. ET, NBA TV Series tied 2-2
Heat at Sixers, 8 p.m. ET, TNT Philadelphia leads 3-1
Spurs at Warriors, 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT Golden State leads 3-1
Links on Links on Links
The Rockets led the Wolves by one point at halftime. Then they dropped 50 points in the third quarter. Fifty. Points. In a quarter. A full 40 of them came on three-pointers and free throws. Rockets gonna Rocket.
A little politics intersection for you: Mitt Romney had excellent seats and a custom Romney No. 5 jersey in Utah, where the 2012 presidential candidate is running for U.S. Senate. He used those extraordinary powers to ... taunt Russell Westbrook, as one does. Retail politics at work. Meanwhile, man of the world Reggie Miller referred to our hero Rick Rubio as “Marco Rubio,” and then struggled to remember if Marco Rubio is a senator or a governor. Banner night in the civic square.
In case you didn’t catch it this weekend, BEEF HISTORY ON BOOGIE COUSINS AND CHRIS PAUL. The beef was hot!
I wrote about LeBron.
Me: “Ooh, the only late game Tuesday is the end of a Spurs-Warriors gentleman’s sweep, I can catch up on the sleep that Jazz-Thunder rudely stole from me.” Also me: “I am not missing what might be Manu Ginobili’s final NBA game, no way.”
Anyone else excited to see Anthony Davis in the second round? Anyone?
Data journalism that matters: is Rick Rubio better with or without the man bun?
Speaking of data journalism, Ben Falk is exceptional. One of the three best devoted basketball analytic writers worked today, in my estimation (with Chris Herring and Kevin Pelton). This meditation on foul trouble was illuminating and simplifying.
What Ben Simmons needs more than a jumper. Yes, that’s right, it’s love.
Noted social media enthusiast Kevin Durant liked an Instagram comment critical of Russell Westbrook and then claimed it was inadvertant, like any of us would ever believe that. The dude Quire Sultan might get the benefit of the doubt on that, but KD doesn’t.
There is a lot of skepticism around Darius Bazley’s decision to go from high school to the G League.
Condi Rice’s college basketball commission is set to release its report on Wednesday. Mike Rutherford explains it all. The NBA has said it may change its eligibility rules around the age minimum in response to this report.
Always read Ricky O’Donnell on Derrick Rose.
In appreciation of Derrick Favors.
In appreciation of Semi Ojeleye’s defense.
On Monday I decried the state of Basketball Twitter. I appreciate the conversation this started! But I appreciate this James Harden Renaissance painting meme way, way more.
WNBA stars showed out at the EuroLeague Final Four. Emma Meesseman is your EuroLeague MVP. Speaking of the women’s game, muchas felicidades to new Swish Appeal EIC Tamryn Spruill. You’ve seen her work on the Warriors linked here in the past.
Be excellent to each other.

Only one thing was holding back Jaren Jackson Jr. and now he’s dominating
Jaren Jackson Jr. has stayed on the court more consistently lately, and his shooting and scoring are adding up to an offensive onslaught in December.
The Memphis Grizzlies are in a hurry.
“Towels? Anyone got towels?” Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies’ prized sophomore and NBA breakout stud of December, traipses out of the shower with shampoo left on his head and soap smeared across his arm.
He needs a towel.
As teammates head to the bus en route back home following a four-game road trip, Ja Morant is addressing the media. In his first game back from injury, Morant finished the best dunk of his young career, this one a monster jam over Suns center Aron Baynes that capped off a statement win for Memphis. The rookie is trying to downplay the slam as Jackson barges into the media scrum at Morant’s locker to borrow a spare towel sitting on the chair next to Morant.
The locker room busts up. It gives Morant an excuse to move on from a question about how good the dunk was, and the media scrum disbands. Morant packs up and leaves. There is no time to spend on this win. The next game is coming too quickly.
Jackson hurries to dry off and get going. He’s behind because he stayed on the court after his teammates for an interview with Memphis’ local television broadcast. A little more attention has been on Jackson recently amid what is far and away the most dominant and illuminating stretch of his career.
Since the start of December, Jackson is averaging 22.0 points per game, taking on a huge portion of the Grizzlies’ offense and using hot 3-point shooting to score more efficiently. The combination of a 28.6 percent usage rate and 62.1 true shooting percentage Jackson has posted this month would be among the best in the NBA this year.
“He’s seeking out shots and being aggressive at the same time,” says first-year head coach Taylor Jenkins. “There’s some times where we have to rein him back a little bit, but more often than not, he’s let the offense come to him, and he’s finding the right balance between attacking and trying to score.”
The mechanics of Jackson’s shot would lead any onlooker to believe the man would never put it in the basket. Since high school, the book on Jackson was that while his shot often went in, the low release point and inconsistent lower body would make it impossible to find nylon against pro athletes. After nearly 300 attempted 3s in the NBA, Jackson’s 38 percent mark says otherwise.
Confidence comes with reps, and Jackson is understandably feeling himself a bit more right now.
Most shooters who are inconsistent in college build their shot from spot-up looks in the corner outward. Jackson took only 96 triples at Michigan State, making 40 percent of them. He only took about three per 36 minutes as a rookie under J.B. Bickerstaff. But Jenkins saw something different, quickly finding ways to incorporate Jackson’s unreal ability to make difficult 3s on the move.
youtube
Legs flailing, the mere idea of a set shot ignored, Jackson lets it fly. He credits confidence from coaches encouraging him to take those shots, as well as seeing the ball go in for his recent flame-throwing.
“Me finding my shot a little bit better, that’s been good for me,” Jackson says.
Prior to this stretch — heck, even during the scoring onslaught — the gameplan for Jackson was easy to craft for opposing teams.
“When we talked about him last year, the main focus was to get him off the court because of what he was able to do if he was to stay on the court,” says Solomon Hill, who was traded from New Orleans to Memphis during the offseason.
I ask Hill what his first impression was of someone so athletic and versatile when he took the floor with the Grizzlies for the first time. Hill chuckles before responding, “I figured out why he didn’t stay on the court when we played against him. The foul trouble was something that’s real, it wasn’t like a one-time thing. But then you also see his ability.”
Is it possible that fouling is the one thing holding Jackson back from unleashing like this for the rest of the season? The big man averages 5.6 fouls per 36 minutes, and his overall foul rate puts him in the bottom quarter of the NBA, per Cleaning the Glass.
During a season in which Jenkins has flipped through rotations ad hoc, chemistry is at a premium. Jackson, a massive part of the team’s future, needs time on the court with his teammates to get used to them and Jenkins’ system.
“As a teammate of his, we’re a whole different team with your ability to stay on the court and stay out of foul trouble,” Hill says. “It’s definitely a breath of fresh air.”
Many of them are icky charges when teams force him to try to go right or drive off the bounce when he’s not ready. Others are the byproduct of not quite knowing where to put his chest and hands when someone is coming toward him full speed at the rim. Many seem to come because referees know Jackson fouls a lot, and are quick-triggered with him now.
All of it is a bit more extreme than most young bigs, but nothing that a smart player like Jackson can’t solve.
“A lot of it is just continuing to do your work early, having an urgency and awareness as the players are developing, knowing the situations that might come before the actual action happens,” Jenkins said. “Put yourself in the right situation not just with your mind, but also your body, your footwork, your hands.”
The calls don’t seem to get to Jackson. Frustration boils over from time to time on the court, but it doesn’t overwhelm him.
Jackson’s energy after a foul call isn’t much different than before the win in Phoenix, when he’s on the bench with Morant, singing and dancing along to the music playing over the PA. Assistant coach Niele Ivey laughs at both of them, but it feels like a real team, rare for groups who are relatively young and relatively bad.
Other parts of Jackson’s game are coming along because of the extra talent around him. One thing the Grizzlies are not is young. Veterans like Hill, Jae Crowder and Jonas Valanciunas take pressure off Jackson, Morant and the other youngsters.
That means the predictability of Jackson’s game doesn’t hurt Memphis too much. Though Jackson goes left every time, it often works. He shoots 43 percent between 4-14 feet, per Cleaning the Glass. Not many players this young and this big have scoring touch like Jackson.
youtube
Teams foul Jackson a lot for the very same reasons refs call fouls on him. When a guy is 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, much gets lost in the forest of limbs. Still, the guys who are big enough to contest his shot aren’t fast enough to keep up, and the guys who are quick enough can’t match Jackson’s physicality.
In the modern NBA, Jackson is the best kind of matchup problem — and the figurehead of the next generation of unicorns.
The most devastating small-ball big men — like Pascal Siakam or Anthony Davis — aren’t the guys who can simply defend up a position, but true big men who are skilled enough to survive in a spaced-out game. Together with Jenkins, Jackson is becoming the type of player who dominates in that environment.
I ask Hill, a six-year veteran who played with Davis in New Orleans, who Jackson reminds him of. He responds with a long pause. A deep breath. Then a smile.
“I think the NBA tries to find certain comparisons to people, but Jaren puts himself in his own box,” Hill says. “That’s what [Jaren] is able to do, his game and his adaptiveness grows because he came in so young in a transition phase in the league. He can do it on the block, he can do it if you go under a pick-and-roll. You look at him as like a big wing.”
Jenkins’ system takes advantage of versatility, but it is tough to master. The coach calls it “random motion,” though Jackson’s responsibilities within it are anything but random. As he comes off screens, he needs to know whether to catch and shoot, attack a closeout, reset with a dribble handoff, or reverse the ball. If he curls around a screener and doesn’t receive a pass, he has to know whether to cut inside or space out to the perimeter. Standing in no man’s land without any energy kills a possession.
One of the big changes from last season was taking Jackson out of the dunker’s spot and involving him more in the flow of the offense. Jenkins has said he met with Jackson and told the youngster he will not put a max on Jackson’s nightly attempted 3s. Because Jenkins’ system can put players in position to not touch the ball for several consecutive minutes, the coach wants to create mini packages of smaller sets that involve Jackson.
“It can be hard sometimes to figure out where that shot is coming,” Jenkins told The Athletic. “It’s definitely on me as a coach to find the right time to get him the shot that he needs.”
Right, now they’re finding nirvana. But any little spurt, positive or negative, within the NBA season can be disregarded because the sample is so small. Jackson’s recent explosion only dates back nine games. While Memphis has won four of its last five, the grueling NBA calendar can make it difficult to stop and smell the roses. Sometimes, a towel can be more pressing than the big win you just finished off.
Though that may be true, any time a player starts to overcome the one thing holding him back and show the type of player he truly can be, small samples be damned. It’s huge.
“Winning builds rhythm,” Jackson says.
Lately, Jackson has been able to stay on the floor more and impact the game. At the same time, Jenkins is learning how to balance Jackson’s aggressiveness with better game awareness.
Even if the Grizzlies don’t have the time to luxuriate in it, the ramifications of Jackson’s growth are huge. He is scoring like a madman against defenders who know what’s coming, finding a role with a smart coach, and taking the Grizzlies to a new level.

NBA roundup: Grizz sink Nets on Crowder’s buzzer-beater
October 28, 2019
Jae Crowder drained a 3-pointer as time expired in overtime to lift the host Memphis Grizzlies to a 134-133 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday.
Brooklyn appeared poised to record its second win in three outings after Memphis rookie Ja Morant failed to connect with Kyle Anderson on an inbounds pass with 8.1 seconds left.
Spencer Dinwiddie made one of two free throws to push the Nets’ lead to 133-131, but Morant set up Crowder for the game-winning shot at the top of the arc. Morant scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and pushed the game into overtime with a well-timed block of Kyrie Irving as time expired.
Dillon Brooks made 9 of 15 shots from the field for 21 points as the Grizzlies overcame an eight-point deficit with 3:20 remaining in the fourth quarter to record their first win of the season.
Trail Blazers 121, Mavericks 119
Carried by 35 points from CJ McCollum, 28 from Damian Lillard and 20 from Rodney Hood, Portland overcame a sluggish first half to pull out a clutch victory at Dallas.
Lillard’s lefty layup with 26.8 seconds to go — after a Mavericks shot-clock violation — put the Blazers ahead for good.
Kristaps Porzingis led Dallas with 32 points, adding nine rebounds and five assists, while Luka Doncic had 29 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.
Lakers 120, Hornets 101
Anthony Davis scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half as host Los Angeles defeated Charlotte. Davis also had 14 rebounds and three blocks.
LeBron James scored 20 points, dished out 12 assists and grabbed six rebounds. Dwight Howard delivered a solid effort off the bench, scoring 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking four shots for the Lakers.
Miles Bridges led the Hornets with 23 points. Cody Zeller finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds (seven on the offensive end), three blocks and three steals. Terry Rozier also scored 19 points, while Dwayne Bacon added 15 points for the Hornets.
Timberwolves 116, Heat 109
Andrew Wiggins scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter — including three straight 3-pointers at one point — to lead Minnesota past Miami in Minneapolis.
In a span of just over four minutes, Wiggins scored 16 of Minnesota’s 17 points, as the Wolves went from a 96-93 deficit to a 110-101 lead. Prior to that stretch, he had been 0-for-5 on 3-pointers in the game. Then, he made five straight shots, including four threes, during the 17-5 run.
T-Wolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points and 11 rebounds. But he was fairly quiet after a 15-point first quarter. Miami was led by rookie guard Kendrick Nunn, who scored 25 points. He is off to the best three-game rookie scoring start in Heat history.
Thunder 120, Warriors 92
Dennis Schroder scored 22 points as host Oklahoma City blew out Golden State, which has averaged 130.5 points allowed in back-to-back losses to start the season.
The Thunder dominated from the start, scoring the game’s first eight points. The margin was less than double digits for only about six minutes of game action. Oklahoma City led 70-37 at halftime.
Danilo Gallinari added 21 points, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 19 in the win. The Thunder made 15 3-pointers, four by Gallinari. Stephen Curry led Golden State with 23 points but was just 2 of 9 from behind the 3-point line. The Warriors shot just 15.2 percent from behind the arc (5 of 33).
