What comes next?
I remember the first day I saw a computer. It was in the first floor of my newly joined school. It was a small room with red carpet and A.C. and we have to leave our shoes outside the room as there should not be any dust coming.Â
I was fascinated that I can type my name on the black screen one character at a time. At that time the fees to learn computer was 25 Rs. a month on top of the regular tution fees. We were taught BASIC language and from that moment I loved programming.Â
Nothing much happened for next 6 years as we were only taught BASIC and the coursework was repeated every year. In the mean time I had learned about Internet, Modem and HTML. After 6 years we were taught C++ and that too of the Borlandâs era in the blue screen and we made star-pattern printing programs and to calculate simple interest, compound interest and other simple programs.Â
My final project in school was an elevator simulator. This may feel big but it was not much. It maintained the state of the elevator and you can type to summon it and when it reached it prints - â elevator open - please enter 1 personâ and it had support for 2 persons and all the things happened as they happen with an elevator. This was my first big project.Â
Then during my engineering, life happened and didnât touched programming till my mid-3rd year when I started to learn Java. We made fun things with Swing like clock, DB manager, Roommates Account Tracker and a simple website.Â
This was left behind with my job as an Image processing research job at CDAC. Played around with Matlab, OpenCV, Camera SDKs and Visual Studio. My big project here was creating a program to do thousands of matches per second for iris databases and writing to a file which was then analysed by another script to give us the accuracy of our Iris recognition systems. There were a few other but this was what I was most proud of. During the last part of my job at CDAC I had started working with Deep Learning and enjoyed that but no project was done in there.Â
Now 1 year after I left the job another thing has caught my eye. Creating a Self Driving Tractor which can plough/do whatever a tractor does in the fields. Â I have chosen a tractor because that will be easy at the moment ( I donât have to look for lane lines and pedestrians or other tractors in field). The truth is I donât know anything about how a tractor operates. I donât know how I will control itâs speed or steering or the lever which puts the plougher in the field.Â
But it will be a fun thing. I am again excited like the first time a saw a computer.Â
Letâs see what happens.Â

PRG 420 Entire Class (Java programming I ) Version 10
PRG 420 Version 10 (v2) Week 1 Individual Assignment Create a Program
Create a program in Java⢠that displays âHello world!â Take a screen shot that shows the programâs successful compilation and execution. Then submit your program along with the screen shot.
Note. No points will be awarded for submitting the program alone.
Discussion Questions
DQ 1 Java⢠is a portable language, and being an object-oriented programming language, it also encourages component reusability. How does Java⢠achieve these two important features? How are these features desirable in modern software engineering?
DQ 2 You are a bank manager and you are helping a new bank teller understand the kind of accounts the bank offers. If a customer comes in asking to open a new savings account, the teller needs to ask what kind of accountâpassbook savings or certificate of depositâthe customer would like to open. Remind the customer that all accounts with our bank are insured by the FDIC.
You should explain that all accounts earn some interest; a savings accountâs interest is compounded monthly. You should assign a unique account number after accepting the customerâs initial deposit
PRG 420 Version 10 Week 2 (v2) Individual Assignment Simple Commission Calculation Program Part 1
Write a Java⢠application using NetBeans⢠Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that calculates the total annual compensation of a salesperson. Consider the following factors:
A salesperson will earn a fixed salary of $55000
A salesperson will also receive a commission as a sales incentive. Commission is a percentage of the salespersonâs annual sales. The current commission is 15% of total sales.
The total annual compensation is the fixed salary plus the commission earned.
The Java⢠application should meet these technical requirements:
The application should have at least one class, in addition to the applicationâs controlling class (a controlling class is where the main function resides). There should be proper documentation in the source code. The application should ask the user to enter annual sales, and it should display the total annual compensation. Discussion Questions
DQ 1 A class is a blueprint for an object. A class may have a default constructor, a constructor with arguments, accessor methods, mutator methods, public fields, and private fields. Choose a category (such as animal, vehicle, and so on) and describe how you would design a class for it.
DQ 2 List three types of errors you may encounter in a Java program. Describe what to do to
minimize errors.
PRG 420 Ver. 10 Week 3 Individual Assignment Simple Commission Calculation Program Part 2
Modify the Week Two Java⢠application using Java⢠NetBeans⢠IDE to meet these additional and changed business requirements:
The company has recently changed its total annual compensation policy to improve sales.
A salesperson will continue to earn a fixed salary of $55000. The current sales target for every salesperson is $500,000
The sales incentive will only start when 80% of the sales target is met. The current commission is 15% of total sales.
If a salesperson exceeds the sales target, the commission will increase based on an acceleration factor. The acceleration factor is 1.50%
The application should ask the user to enter annual sales, and it should display the total annual compensation.
The application should also display a table of potential total annual compensation that the salesperson could have earned, in $5000 increments above the salespersonâs annual sales, until it reaches 50% above the salespersonâs annual sales.
Sample Table: Assuming a total annual sales of $100,000, the table would look like this:
Total Sales Total Compensation 100,000 <> 150,000 <> 200,000 <> 250,000 <> 300,000 <> 350,000 <> 400,000 <> 450,000 <> 500,000 <> âŚ.. ⌠950,000
<> 1,000,000 <>
The Java⢠application should also meet these technical requirements:
The application should have at least one class, in addition to the applicationâs controlling class. The source code must demonstrate the use of conditional and looping structures. There should be proper documentation in the source code.
Discussion Questions
DQ 1Our focus this week is loops. Select and complete one of the following activities:
Convert the following program from for loop to while loop.
class ArithmeticProgression {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int sum = 0;
for (int i = 1; i <= 1000; i++) { sum = sum + i; System.out.println(Integer.toString(sum)); DQ 2 Consider the following conditions: CONDITION 1: while ( !(cChoice == âQâ || cChoice == âqâ) ) CONDITION 2: while ( cChoice != âQâ || cChoice != âqâ ) Do Conditions 1 and 2 give the same result? What tool or technique would you use to explain the result? PRG 420 Version 10 Week 4 (v2) Individual Assignment Write a simple commission calculation program using IDE. Modify the Week Three Java⢠application using Java⢠NetBeans⢠IDE to meet these additional and changed business requirements: The application will now compare the total annual compensation of at least two salespersons. It will calculate the additional amount of sales that each salesperson must achieve to match or exceed the higher of the two earners. The application should ask for the name of each salesperson being compared. The Java⢠application should also meet these technical requirements: The application should have at least one class, in addition to the applicationâs controlling class. The source code must demonstrate the use of Array or ArrayList. There should be proper documentation in the source code. Discussion Questions DQ 1 What is the difference between arrays and ArrayList? What are the advantages and disadvantages of an ArrayList, and when should you use an ArrayList over a simple array? DQ 2 What is the difference between string and StringBuilder? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a StringBuilder, and when should you use a StringBuilder over a simple String? WEEK 5 Discussion Questions DQ 1 In your opinion, what are the three biggest challenges in planning and designing a solution for a programming problem? What can you do to overcome these challenges? How would you apply these techniques to the programs in this class? DQ 2 Using an example from your work or daily life, describe an âis-aâ relationship. Why is an âis-aâ relationship important when designing an inheritance between classes?
