Michael Starr of Steel Panther appeared on Final Resonance TV's "Van Halen Stories" podcast to share some amazing stories of meeting David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen, seeing the classic Van Halen lineup live, whether he was ever considered for the job as Van Halen front man, and his planned appearance at the failed Eat 'Em and Smile reunion concert in 2015.

Before forming Steel Panther, Starr was an original member of the Van Halen tribute band The Atomic Punks from 1994- 2008. The band was so spot on that Roth himself tapped Punks' guitarist Bart Walsh to join his solo band in 1999. When Walsh left to join DLR, Starr's future Steel Panther bandmate, Satchel, would take over on guitar. Starr talks about The Atomic Punks, Steel Panther and more in the interview with Jeff Goebel above.

MC and Franc D’Ambrosio both started off playing the phantom at the start of their runs, but what other old school actors also started as the phantom?

Well, assuming a random cut-off date of the year 2000 for "old school Phantoms", I'd say... quite a lot of actors? Remember, when the show first started, there's no pool of former Raouls (or less commonly, former Andres or Piangis) to draw upon for Phantom actors. A lot of principal actors for Phantom in the early days started off playing the Phantom.

Inaugural Mopar Event Excites from Start to Finish

With ambition and anticipation, Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio staged its Inaugural Ken Ganley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram World of Mopar presented by Arrington Performance, Sept. 22-24, 2023 and by all accounts, it was an extraordinary event. Produced and presented by Summit Motorsports Park with Mopar enthusiasts in mind, it featured three days of racing, a Fun Field Car Show, swap meet, car corral, manufacturers’ midway, concert by Trainwreck Country Band and fireworks. “We couldn’t be happier with our Inaugural Ken Ganley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram World of Mopar presented by Arrington Performance,” said Bill Bader Jr., president of Summit Motorsports Park. “Our team spent several months organizing this event, and we all wanted it to be successful, and we are all very grateful that it was. We had a tremendous turnout, and we look forward to an even bigger event next year. The planning starts now.” On Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, the final round of eliminations in Indy Cylinder Head No Box saw Ron Hicks of Leo, Indiana, rip off a .001 reaction time and race to a 12.45 to defeat Cory Blackford of Toledo, Ohio, who stopped the clocks at 9.89. In Box, Randy Chestnut recorded a .007 on the tree and took the win with a 6.13 over Keith Meador, who went through the traps at 6.16. On Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, the final round of eliminations in Koffel’s Place Super Pro put the spotlight on Gene Nagy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cliff Motes of Logan, West Virginia. They inched into the beams before blasting off, and Nagy came out on top with a 4.70 to Motes’ 6.59. In CRT Transmissions Pro, Marcus King of Republic, Ohio and Mike Walwood of Parma, Ohio motored up to the starting line, and King secured the win with a 9.60 elapsed time to Walwood’s 9.85. AA Transmission Hemi Super Stock saw Bob Marshall of Columbus, Ohio and Ron Gallagher of Whitby, Ontario, turn on their red lights, and Marshall won as his light was a bit less red than Gallagher’s. In Mancini Racing Nostalgia Super Stock, Doug Wright of Waterford, Michigan and Mike DeChicco of Ostrander, Ohio put dial-ins on their classic cars before Wright wrapped up the win with a 9.43 to DeChicco’s 11.46. Dan Trainer of Orient, Ohio and Dan Brewer of West Milton, Ohio took the stage for the TTI Exhaust Sportsman final round of eliminations, and Trainer wrapped up the win when Brewer illuminated the red light, with a mere -.005, at the hit. On Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, the final round of eliminations in FireCore 50 Top Gun Full-Bodied saw Jeff Goebel of Stratford, Ontario, flat-foot the pedal on his Duster to a 4.39 for the win over Chris Wheatcraft of Jamestown, Ohio, who clocked a 4.84 in his Demon. In FireCore 50 Top Gun Open-Bodied, Bryan Keller cruised to a 3.70 to earn his trip to the Summit Motorsports Park Winner’s Circle over Keith McLennan, who was .004 at the hit but had to get out of the throttle. Unfortunately, a continuous mist on Sunday evening caused the remaining rounds for other categories to be cancelled.  As an added element to the event, Manufacturers’ Choice Car Show Awards were given during a ceremony on the starting line. Taking an educated guess, by the time of the second poster the attraction’s emphasis had moved away from the Bride’s story (as reflected in the less specific new Ghost Host dialogue added shortly after opening) and so the tagline refers to ghostly secrets in a more general sense.

At some point during the development of Phantom Manor, artist Dan Goozée painted this dramatic view of Phantom Manor based on the architectural model by Bob Baranick and various concept art by Fernando Tenedora and Christian Hope, to convey the look and feel of the attraction.

It was not initially meant for the Frontierland attraction posters, which Jeff Burke wanted to look as if they might have come from a Thunder Mesa printing press. He had Maggie Parr create new detailed cross-hatched line art, to be screen printed with graphics and muted colors. 

However, somebody in upper management (according to some, Michael Eisner himself) found the final poster too somber to be displayed alongside the other Euro Disneyland posters and insisted on a more colorful and eye-catching design to advertise this major attraction.

With little time to spare, the Imagineers photographed Dan Goozée’s artwork, added bright green graphics and printed lithographs (making it one of only two EDL attraction posters that wasn’t screen printed). One print went under Main St. Station, two others to the ticket booths.

Three prints of the first poster design, which might have already been produced, were nevertheless installed in the park – including any displayed in Frontierland itself as they were designed to fit better into the time period. (One has since been swapped with Main St. Station)

Both posters use similar graphics by Leticia Lelevier, notably Christian Hope’s Rubens-inspired Phantom Manor logotype and additional copy in Caslon Antique… But the first version mysteriously reads “Discover the secret of…” and the second “Discover the secretS of…,” plural.

Healthy Soils Legislation Helps Green New Deal

Congressional Democrats have offered an ambitious legislative framework for 2019. Titled the Green New Deal, it seeks to tackle impending climate threats while generating innovative opportunities in the energy, transportation, and agricultural sectors. The Green New Deal includes support of soil health. Between 50% to 70% of agricultural soil has been lost, and rebuilding soil health is crucial for food system security, water quality, and climate change mitigation.

A bi-partisan movement at the state level is calling for what is termed “Healthy Soils Legislation.” Proposed bills nationwide promote good land stewardship through principles and practices that support the aspirations of the Green New Deal by providing practical support for farmers and ranchers, many of whom might not otherwise be supportive of climate efforts. Speaking to this point, Bill McKibben, founder of the global climate movement, 350.org, stated, “Soil is increasingly taking its rightful and necessary place in the climate fight; this is a battle farmers and ranchers can help the world win.”

A promising indicator of this comes from New Mexico where a Healthy Soils Act was approved with rare, overwhelming consensus. The House version passed with a vote of 48-6 and the Senate version passed unanimously, 34-0. Officially titled “An Act Relating to Natural Resources,” the New Mexico law creates a Healthy Soil Program and a Healthy Soil Grant Program in the state’s Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the program is “to promote and support farming and ranching systems and other forms of land management that increase soil organic matter, aggregate stability, microbiology and water retention to improve the health, yield and profitability of the soils of the state.”

It should be noted that the phrase, “increase soil organic matter,” literally means to increase the carbon content of soil. Carbon is naturally accumulated in soil through the photosynthesis process. Conventional farming and ranching practices have greatly depleted soil of its carbon, contributing to global warming and exacerbating the impact of droughts and floods. Fortunately, improved cropping and grazing methods embraced by environmentalists and producers, and emphasized in healthy soils legislative efforts, can reverse this negative trend and increase soil carbon, making these approaches important allies in the climate flight. It is estimated that improving soil globally can sequester many billions of tons of excess atmospheric carbon annually. Such “drawdown” efforts — meaning they pull carbon out of the air — will be essential as we take measures to bring atmospheric carbon dioxide back down to safe levels.

Commenting on the bi-partisan nature of the New Mexico effort, Jeff Goebel, a management consultant involved in drafting and lobbying for the legislation stated, “We understood that the only people who can actually change the health of the soil on a daily basis are ranchers, farmers, foresters, and gardeners. Therefore, we need to do everything possible to help land managers be successful. We were adaptive (consensual) in the language without giving up the integrity of the legislation.”

Nebraska recently passed legislation to create a Healthy Soils Task Force to develop a healthy soils initiative and action plan. A Massachusetts bill, “An Act to Promote Healthy Soils,” directs the state to form a Healthy Soils Program that shall “seek to optimize climate benefits while supporting the economic viability of agriculture in the commonwealth.” With strong bi-partisan support from both chambers, passage is likely. Healthy soils legislation has also been in legislatures in 2019 in the following additional states: Connecticut, Vermont, New York, Illinois, Iowa, Washington and Oregon.

“The time has come when man can no longer continue using the land, sea and air as his ‘trash basket,’” a New York Times article said in 1966. “He must find ways to cycle his wastes, both solid and liquid, back into the economy.”

It was one of our first front page articles to address the urgent need to deal with household waste.

The report was based on a National Academy of Sciences study sent to Lyndon B. Johnson’s White House. It came as more cheap, plastic goods were entering the daily lives of Americans — and leaving as garbage.

We have come a long way. Today is the 20th America Recycles Day, a nonprofit initiative.

Last year, 1.9 million Americans participated, organizers said, and 63 million pounds of recyclables were collected.

But there’s much work still to be done. A third of U.S. household waste still ends up in landfills.

Great White guitarist Mark Kendall was the latest guest in Final Resonance TV's "Van Halen Stories" series. Kendall witnessed the rise of Van Halen from their backyard party days to becoming the biggest rock and roll band in the land.

Kendall was a high school student in Huntington Beach, California at the time he first saw Van Halen perform at a junkyard for one dollar. Hear him tell host Jeff Goebel that story and much more in the video above!
