I'm still so unbelievably upset that we were ROBBED of this series.
Greg Smallwood pitched Midnight Sons to Marvel in 2017 but they passed on it. It haunts my dreams...
I just know this series would have been incredible 😭

propaganda under the cut
Karl Valley: hes an assassin hes a monk his brother was the edgy 90s batman hes probably gay. what more do you want
Jennifer Kale: While she has shown up in quite a few comics, mostly on the horror side of Marvel, I feel like she’s not a character many people really care about sadly. She’s a witch, she hangs out with everyone’s favourite swamp monster (well he’s MY favourite swamp monster), she’s bisexual, and I just think she’s neat.

Jennifer Kale and not Illyana Rasputin in X-Force #85
So this is not Illyana who Dani visits when in need of mystical assistance, but a different blond witchy woman. Still it’s so easy to imagine that if Illyana hadn’t been de-aged but had left the New Mutants/X-Force for different reasons, this is how they might’ve brought her back to the team—living her best life studying magic in peace and ready to help her friends if they call.
Dani hangs out with Jennifer again later, so she clearly misses having a magical bestie.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
October 24th - Jennifer Kale
Eons ago, in the years prior to The Great Cataclysm, the Atlantean sorceress Zhered-Na prophesied the sinking of Atlantis.  Branded as a heretic, the sorceress was exiled by Emperor Kamuu.  Zhered-Na was banished to Thuria where she established her own church and had many visions of the future to come.
Thousands of years later, The Cult of Zhered-Na continued on as a small enclave of dedicated mystics.  The cult relocated to the Florida Everglades searching out the fabled Nexus of All Realities as foretold in the Tome of Zhered-Na.  The cult believed it was their duty to guard this nexus and prevent it from being used as a means for the demons of Sominus to Invade the earth.
Toward the modern era, Joshua Kale became the leader of the Cult of Zhered-Na and holder of the Tome.  Kale’s teenage daughter, Jennifer, had shown a tremendous knack for sorcery and she was groomed by the cult to become its new high priestess.
Jennifer had little interest in leading the cult, but was eager to learn more about magic and she stole the Tome of Zhered-Na to attempt a spell.  She accidentally summoned the demonic being, Thog the Nether-Spawn, from the realm of Sominus and the creature would have run amok had it not been for the timely intervention of Man-Thing, the protector of the Nexus.
Soon thereafter, Jennifer became the apprentice of the other-dimensional wizard known as Dakimh.  Jennifer was taught all manner of new magical abilities and informed by Dakimh that she and The Man-Thing were destined to protect the was earth from Sominus.  Dedicated to fulfilling this cause, Jennifer worked hard to refine her skills and stand vigilant guard over the Nexus of All Realities.
Jennifer would go on to have numerous adventures alongside Man-Thing as well as other heroes, including Howard The Duck, Dr. Strange and Spider-Man.  Once it became clear that the threat from Sominus had been prevented for good, Jennifer tried to live a normal life, moving to California to go to college.  Such normalcy would not be in the cards for Jennifer as she was regularly pulled back into the affairs of magic and the supernatural.
Jennifer would go on to form The Witches alongside fellow sorceresses, Satana and Topaz, in order to put a stop to her brother after he had become possessed by a spell from the Tome of Zhered-Na.  Later, Following the first Superhero Civil War, Jennifer was recruited into the Fifty State Avengers Initiative and asked to serve among the team known as The Command in Florida.  This squad was decimated by an incursion of zombies that emerged from the Nexus.  Jennifer survived and joined the Midnight Sons to hunt down the source of the zombie plague.
Jennifer Kale first appeared in the pages of Fear #11 (1972).

Midnight Sons by Greg Smallwood, 2017.
Somewhere out there, there is a universe where Marvel didn’t pass up on Smallwood doing a Midnight Sons comic, and every day I weep for not being in that universe. Individual portraits under the cut.

Jonas Graymalkin: jonas graymalkin is charles xavier’s great times a million uncle from the 1770s who basically time travelled to 2009 / the modern day as a teenager (this is not exactly what happened but i dont want to get into it so im lying). he has been a “main” character in one ongoing (young x-men), which was bad, and a pride oneshot, which was also bad. the bulk of his appearances have been as background student no 6.
