my favorite Funny Anime Names(TM) so far, ranked
Millions Knives from Trigun: nothing can beat the hilarity of the Evil Twin Brother Named Millions Knives, who does in fact have millions knives at his disposal. peak Anime Name. I'd put a blue ribbon on him, but I'd die in the attempt, so let's not.
Wamuu from JJBA: first of all, it's a reference to the rock band Wham!, which kills me every time I think about it. yeah, the guy who beats up the hero is gonna be named Wham!. but what bumped it up into second place is that it's fun to say. "wah-mooo". I mouth it to myself all the time.
Esidisi and Kars from JJBA: they are tied for third place, right below their servant Wamuu, because the fact that they are played so seriously as these menacing 10,000 year old apex predators while being named AC/DC and Cars is simply incredible.
Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100: Reigen basically means "fake psychic" (lit. "spirit illusion"), and Arataka hearkens to his greed (lit. "new prosperity"). so with context from his character, his name reads as "fake psychic in this for the fast money". I added some points for his name unintentionally confusing a bunch of ignorant Americans into thinking he's part white because "Reigen" is a homonym with some white names, but subtracted some because the name itself isn't funny to pronounce.
Ging Freecss from Hunter x Hunter: in a surprise move from my best beloathed deadbeat dad, his name makes 5th on my List of Funny Anime Names by dint of being purely phonetic (spelled in katakana to imitate a foreign name) and extremely funny to say out loud (approx. "jean freaks").
Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist: this sounds so American and for what?? also, his name has at least two Character Hints / Foreshadowing Things to it, making it clever. but he's only in sixth place because his name makes me smile in pain and not just delight. Roy Mustang. I ask you.
Yato from Noragami: there's. PUNS. there's LAYERS to this name. 夜, ya, the counter for "nights", for a calamity god. it's just a little bit creepy, but also a little pathetic. perfect for him. also I love that the ト (to, phonetic character) is actually a misreading of 卜 (boku, divination). and he doesn't tell anyone. perfection <333

Canon fact; Kars and AC/DC adopted Wham and Santana Prompt: family bonding go
oh my GOD IM NOT EVEN KIDDING I MADE THESE HEADCANONS AT 4AM LAST NIGHT AND FORGOT ABOUT THEM UNTIL I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS GOOGLE DOC TODAY
And I just feel like I have to share them now so you know what my brain was thinking. Prepare to be subjected to my raw, 4am thought process, readers...
These are all crack I’m sorry
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
PILLAR DADS PILLAR DADS PILLAR DADS PILLAR-
Can we please make this a thing because I love ;-;
(Ok I don’t know how Pillar men babies work and I did no research but that’s what headcanons are for.)
-Ok I know this is impossible but consider our man Kars in all his glory, fucking LOIN CLOTH AND ALL but with one of those baby carriers strapped to his chest I’m sorry
-AC/DC learned crying as a tactic by watching the Pillar babies get attention from Kars whenever they would do it
-These bros have no idea what they’re doing but THEY ARE TRYING OKAY
-Wham/Wamuu is the favourite child and everyone knows it
-They do not know how to raise kids like it has been hundreds of thousands of years since they were children so they just kinda—forget
-They go terrorize the Hamon warriors as a family bonding activity
An actual conversation, probably:
“Come on, you can do it!”
*panicked screaming* “NO I CAN’T I FORGET HOW!”
“Just do the wind thing and kill the warriors!”
“You can do it!”
“NOooOOO I CAN’T~”
“Just remember your training!”
“FINE.”
*Wind noises*
*Terrorized screams*
*Instant praise*
-Do Pillarmen have to eat?? They probably have to eat once in awhile and I just imagine Kars and AC/DC dragging in different shit to get them to eat it because they don’t know what to feed them
-Wham/Wamuu went through a phase in his early...teen?? years (I don’t even know how these bros age but I don’t care) where he refused to eat anything but plants and fruit or some shit (homie basically became a vegetarian) but our boy still needed protein so AC/DC went out and hand-picked all these almonds and nuts and shit for him every day so he would still get that good nutrition
-They live in a cave together at some point and they each have their own corner of the cave to themselves and as punishment Kars will be like “GO TO YOUR CORNER” and they aren’t allowed to have dinner
-Kars will occasionally let down his hair and the pillar children are just in AWE at how long it is and AC/DC teaches them how to braid and they all weave flowers in his hair I don’t make the rules let me have this
-Kars teaches them how to do their makeup because they only learn from the best
-I headcanon that puberty for them is getting those horns on their head and that shit HURTS because it’s a giant spike growing out of your head so yeah that happened
-AC/DC is 10000% the fun dad and Kars is the strict dad
-I don’t even know what they would all do together...what would they do???
-Kars played Lisa Lisa’s legs like a guitar and string instruments were used in like 3000 BC which was like 3000 years before they went into those pillars...MUSICIAN KARS??
-He played them all songs and before you say he didn’t—he did.
-Pillar lullabies.
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
This is what happens when I try to do things at 4am. I guess the golden rule is if you put “Pillar” in front of something, it automatically makes it something that they do. Will I make a pillar dad fic? You know what? Maybe I will. Wherever the wind takes me.

[ID: box of Deluxe fair trade earl grey tea with fifty tea bags]
Please elaborate on how Twilight and JoJo have similar strengths and weaknesses. I really want to hear what you have to say about both of them regarding their similarities.
Thank you for the tea!
So... okay. Nota bene that I'm still only on Battle Tendency/Part 2 of JoJo, and that I haven't properly read Twilight in... a while now. But.
The thing that these series have in common, more than anything else, is that they're the product of one person's very specific creative obsessions, baaaaasically unedited.
Since both writers were working in less-than-prestigious markets when they started out (80s manga/early 00s YA), they could write Weird Dumb Shit without anyone stopping them. And then when JJBA and Twilight started printing money, any editing that either might have had went out the window, because clearly this person is doing something right, right?
Araki and Meyer are both very good at worldbuilding, for specific given values thereof; they're both good at coming up with bonkers-but-halfway plausible ideas. They both created a weirdly compelling take on basically-unkillable vampires, and manage to keep tension going despite the vampires being unkillable. In some ways they even managed to create foundational works for their genre- if you want to understand how shonen adventure anime got started you kinda need to watch JoJo, and if you want to understand why YA is Like That you need to read Twilight.
They both struggle with some pretty major parts of writing- Araki, bless him, has yet to create a heroic character with more than two personality traits, and Meyer at the time of writing Twilight could not pace a plot to save her life. And yet- somehow- the stories they created are compelling enough to keep you on the hook for a while.
Twilight and JJBA are, unfortunately, both sexist and racist in ways that say... Things... about their authors.
In JJBA's case, Araki is clearly taking inspiration from 19th century adventure stories and pulp fiction- and using that inspiration completely uncritically. You've got racist stock characters that you wouldn't even see in Western fiction in the 90s, because everyone agreed we don't do that shit anymore. And... look, I am not going to say anything about Araki's sexuality, but... he's clearly uninterested in writing women, yeah? It comes off as really homoerotic, even though it's totally unintentional.
In Twilight's case.... well... look, if I say "Stephanie Meyer is Mormon and was most likely raised that way", I think that covers it. Just about everything that's fucked up about Twilight boils down to "Meyer's Mormonism makes her think things that are Very Much Not Okay are a normal part of the fabric of [hetero] relationships" and "Mormons grow up believing Weird Ass Shit about Native Americans anyway, the weird bullshit in Twilight is respectful by comparison". Both of which are pretty fucking major flaws with the writing!
On a more neutral note: both Meyer and Araki have some very niche interests that turn up everywhere in their writing.
If you know anything about JJBA, you know that random characters and powers are named after 80s music for No Fucking Reason. as early as part 1 you've got characters named Dire and Straits, and in part 2 you've got Cars, Wham, and AC/DC. (oh, scuse me- Kars, Wammu, and Esidesi. COPYRIGHT, WE'RE NOT VIOLATING IT). And of course Roundabout has become an iconic part of JoJo to the point it's a meme just because it's what Araki was listening to while writing...
Similarly, in Twilight, one of the first things you know about any character is the make and model of car they drive. The characters spend a hell of a lot of time having conversations while they're driving around, for no real reason. For heaven's sake, Meyer's favourite character is a mechanic! It's a part of the world that's tonally unfitting with everything else she's trying to build, it's definitely the author's interest peeking through, and it's really endearing.
There's no good TLDR here, it's just an infodump, but ... yeah, the similarities are there, and I'm enjoying the mashup on the merits, if nothing else.

for the '5 things you'd change' meme: jojo!
WELL
1. More female characters in parts 1-4.  Like, at least one female as a main member of the squad.  I know we got Lisa Lisa in part 2, but she really didn’t end up doing much, aside from training Joseph and Caesar in Hamon; she didn’t even get to fight any of the Pillar Men, which is a fucking bummer.  And we got Trish in part 5, sure, but she only developed her Stand more than halfway through the story, which kinda sucks.  Plus, she was literally the only female character in the part; correct me if I’m wrong, but unlike previous parts, literally all the villains they fought were men.  Parts 6-8 are pretty solid (from what I can tell, not having read them yet) but yknow.  Parts 3 and 4 were both pretty bad with female characters (especially part 3, having basically no female characters of importance aside from Holly, who was literally just a plot device and nothing else) and that still bothers me.
2. Caesar and Lisa Lisa each taking down a Pillar Man.  After finishing Battle Tendency, taking a step back and realizing Joseph defeating literally all the Pillar Men was. kinda sad.  Honestly, I wish Caesar had ended up defeating Wham (kind of as an ‘if I go down i’m taking you with me’ thing) and Lisa Lisa got to fight AC/DC instead of Joseph.  Or, at the very least, Lisa Lisa and Joseph tag-team Kars instead of Lisa Lisa getting KO’d immediately.  That was lame
3. Bring more characters back!!!!  Like…where is Josuke?  Where is Lisa Lisa?  Where is the entire p4 Morioh squad?  Where are all the characters who survived from previous parts???  I know Araki thinks bringing characters back for nostalgia is cheap but like!!!! cmon!!!!!!  it still sucks we never see a lot of characters again - especially the part 5 squad, since they’re already super disconnected from the rest of the story.  Bringing them back (or the ones who are left) would probably get a lot of fans to appreciate them more.
4. Fill in all that hole.  Y’all know what i mean.  All That Plot Hole.  Just fill it right up.  Where did Dio get that coffin?  Why did hamon work on everything in part 1 and only on oil/water-covered shit in part 2?  how did Jotaro not figure out that his Stando can stop time? where did the super cool Stand abilities of Polnareff and Kakyoin and Giorno and literally half the characters in JJBA go? why weren’t Stand arrows mentioned in SDC?  where the fuck did Santana go?  feel free to add more.
5. Calm down on the killing people thing.  This is more of a personal preference, but. I’m not a fan of half the cast dying in every part’s finale??  aside from part 4, of course, but the point still stands.  I’m a huge fan of angst, but pretty much only angst with a happy ending - the ‘happy ending’ part being kinda crucial. the fact that so many of the kids in this series die without getting the chance to live out their lives the way they deserve is depressing to me

List of characters and stands with music references for names in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
A lot of characters in JJBA are named after references to band, songs and albums, but I realized some people might not get some of the references because they're all from older music and band, as well as more obscure artists.
So, I compiled a list of the ones I know of.
