A Better Familly I

Melissa was furious but she couldn't show her feelings, not there in her workplace, although it was precisely because of her work that she felt that way. She was a daughter of Mexican immigrants and had encountered her share of asshole rich men in her life. But she wasn't expecting to find an arrogant boy lying completely naked waiting for her in the dorm she would have to clean. It was a tremendous shock, as the place should have been empty and suddenly she was facing a… a… she preferred to forget. At that moment she wanted to finish off the boy with her broom. But she needed that job to support herself while she attended nursing school at night. Her father could have helped her of course, his auto repair shop was doing well, but she refused on principle to bother him about it. And there was that other reason too… Henry, though in there he was Professor Roberts. Here's a rich and influential man who broke the mold, she thought as her eye was caught by a glow in the corner of the hall.

"What do we have here?" She murmured to herself, holding a small metallic disc in her hand.

As she admired the Reality Warper someone snuck up behind her and hugged her around the waist. "Hijo de la …" She started to curse thinking that the cheeky boy had decided on a new type of advance, but she controlled herself when she saw who was actually grabbing her. "Henry… I mean, Professor Roberts, don't do that here."

"Ah, Mel, where then? We never have time for ourselves." "I know, but this is my job and yours too, it could get us into trouble." "It won't if the relationship is official." "Henry, don't play with this." "No kidding, I know your classes don't start until next week. How about I drop by your house tonight so we can make things official with your dad? You told me he's the traditional type, so I want to start from a right way." "Oh Henry!" She responded with a smile on her face, followed by a quick kiss. As she tucked the small metallic disk into her uniform, not paying much attention. And there it stayed until Melissa got home and inadvertently knocked it to the living room floor as she pulled the uniform out of her bag. ….

Henry put on his best suit and put on his biggest smile for the difficult battle he knew would lie ahead. Diego Huerta, Melissa's father, would be a difficult opponent, he had crossed the border illegally carrying Melissa as a child in his arms, shortly after the death of his wife in Mexico, the trigger for the small family to come to the USA. He faced all kinds of humiliating work and over time managed to establish his own business, a car workshop that became a reference in the entire Latino community in the region, just like Diego himself. Soon he found himself surrounded by options of women who would love to be his new wife, but from what his daughter commented, he never took any of them into the house he shared with his daughter. Melissa was his top priority, all of his focus and dedication on her. He had authorized his daughter to work outside the home only after much insistence. Henry suspected it would take a lot more insistence to get the man to accept that his little girl was dating someone like him, that in her father's eyes he represented the white privilege the man so detested.

Despite all this Henry was confident that he would manage to win the man's trust, the feelings he had for Melissa were true and once her father realized that things should become easier. At least that was what he longed for. With a last breath he rang the doorbell of the Huerta house, willing to do anything to show Diego that he would be the perfect son-in-law given the opportunity.

As soon as the front door opened and Henry found himself in front of Melissa beaming with beauty, he was absolutely sure that any argument, dispute or injury would be worth it to keep her forever. She was stunning wearing a simple floral dress that enhanced all her beauty, from the cheerful face with the luminous smile that would warm the coldest hearts to the long and shiny black hair.

"You're perfect." He said looking dumbfounded at her.

"I think that was the best good night I've ever heard in my life."

"I'm sorry, but I got totally lost when I saw you!"

"So it's time to find your way back, my father is on his way and we need to talk before he arrives." She said opening the way for him to enter the house.

He tried to kiss her as he walked through the door, but she dodged and directed him straight to the couch.

"Please sit down, mi amor. I'm afraid my father will have a harder time accepting our relationship than I thought. He's furious."

"But why?" Henry asked sitting on the couch and staring back at her with a questioning look.

"He expected me to meet someone from our community. Don't get me wrong, my dad loves America and his greatest pride is that we got our citizenship. But we've been through a lot before that, and when it comes to me he's like even more... defensive."

"Then let me prove to him that my intentions are good. I come from a good family, I have a steady job in a prestigious place, not to sound arrogant, but I'm a great catch, he can't possibly refute someone like me."

"Not only is it possible, it's why he was against our relationship. My father is convinced you're going to take advantage of me and dump me like a used object."

"Melissa, never say that again! I would never do that to you… I… I… I love you!"

"Henry!"

"It's true, I've wanted to tell you this for weeks, but I was afraid of scaring you. But now I see that I can't hide it anymore, I love you and I'll do anything for you!"

"Oh Henry!" Melissa said with tears in her eyes as she threw herself on him and kissed him passionately.

And it was precisely in this position that the two were found by her father.

"Hija, ¿qué está pasando aquí?"

"Papá, puedo explicar..."

"No hay nada que explicar, ¡tenía claro que no quería a este tipo cerca de ti!"

"Papá, no es como piensas, Henry me ama y yo lo amo".

"¡Déjate de tonterías! Y tú, maldito sea, sal de aquí antes de que lo mate".

Not fully understanding the altercation, Henry tried to intervene.

"Mister Huerta, please let me explain..."

"Don't speak to me, otherwise I'll kill you." Said the older man being prevented from advancing by his daughter.

"Papá, no, por favor, cálmate, vamos a otra habitación. Henry, please go away, I... I'll try to calm him down."

"Exactly boy, get the hell out of here and don't you dare come back." She added Diego letting himself be carried away by his daughter. Leaving behind a stunned Henry, who, without realizing it during the discussion, placed his hand on a small metallic disk that completely altered his future when he uttered the following words:

"Damn it, I just wanted to be the son-in-law he expected."

When he finished speaking those words, he got the biggest scare of his life. The small disk expanded, enveloping him in a metallic cocoon, without him even having time to think about running away or calling for help. If anyone else had been in that room, they would have seen the front part of the structure liquefy and solidify again, demonstrating on its surface the image of a young man very similar to Henry, to then liquefy and solidify again, demonstrating the image of a completely different man.

Finally, the metallic cocoon retracted back into the small disk that originated it, leaving a man who was certainly not Henry Roberts sitting on the sofa in the Huertas' living room.

This new man was a fine example of what the Latino community and the male gender itself has the best to offer, a handsome square face, with a well-trimmed dark beard accentuating an already marked jawline, almond-shaped brown eyes and stylish hair, all this accompanied by an enviable physique, wide pecs and big arms, wrapped in a blue button-up shirt that didn't do much to hide all that musculature. That man's picture could be placed next to the word sexy in any dictionary.

Unfortunately for those (many) who showed some interest in him, disappointment would be the only answer. That big fish had already been hooked and it was the voice of his fisherwoman that woke him up:

"Rico, can you help me with the table while Papá gets ready for dinner?"

"Of course. I'll be there in a second." Answered the man leaving the small metallic disc on top of the table in the living room. As Henry himself inadvertently wished to be changed without knowing what he was doing, reality readjusted itself around him in a way that his wish was possible. Henry Roberts was now Enrique - Rico - Ramirez, Melissa Huerta's longtime boyfriend, whom he intended to propose to her father that night.

Rico worked as a Physical Education teacher at Saint James Prep School. An active member of the local Latino community and the neighborhood's golden boy, he played baseball in high school and won a college scholarship, though he never made it to the professional level. But he didn't care about that, being back where he belonged and next to the love he had cultivated since adolescence was more than enough for him.

Rico’s relationship with Diego couldn't be better, he was the son that Sr. Huerta never had. So much Diego supported Melissa's boyfriend throughout his life. He hoped for a few years that Rico would take over his business, but when it became clear that the boy had talent, he buried those dreams and supported young Ramirez in his new job, allowing Melissa to work in St. James just knowing that he would be around. The girl had applied for a job as a cleaner there, but with the help of her boyfriend, she ended up with the position of secretary in the sports department. For which her father was extremely grateful, he doubted any spoiled brat would dare with the coach's girlfriend.

Which made that marriage proposal just a formality. But Rico knew how important such formalities were to his future father-in-law. Therefore, before dinner is served, with everyone already seated at the table, he begins his speech.

"Mr. Huerta, you have been like a second father to me my whole life, some of my earliest memories are running through the equipment in your car workshop when I was so little that you could lift me up with only one arm. Because I've known you and Melissa my whole life and because you know me so well and know that I'm the only person who will love your daughter with as much love and care as you do, I humbly ask you to her hand in marriage." Concludes the young man, his voice trembling with anxiety and expectation as he faces the serious face of the father of the woman he loved. Only to see that face break into a bright smile.

"It's about time, boy! I thought you two would never give me grandchildren. You know I always wanted a big family! Of course you have my acceptance and my blessing. And, I ask this even though I know the answer in advance Is this what you want, Mel?" Diego concludes with a voice as shaky as his future son-in-law's, looking adoringly at his daughter. Which in turn opened a smile as bright as his father's.

"Si, papá. It's all I want in the world!"

"So let's toast to the beginning of a new family" Said a proud Diego raising a glass and being followed by his daughter and son-in-law.

The following morning, Diego Huerta watched through the window with a smile on his face at his daughter and son-in-law, whom he loved as if he was his son, thinking that finally his family would grow the way he always wanted.

Possessing an enviable physique and a handsome face, maybe he could finally get back on the market, he thought, with the image of a specific woman coming to mind. As he absently held a small metallic disk in his hand.

....

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, in the same St. James as the Reality Warper's new journey began, another young man glared at his car, unaware that very soon his history would also be permanently altered...

I have to do residency and idk... maybe I might plan on immigrating to another country for better job opportunities (but will have to study a bit more to get licence there). Im thinking about moving to the USA, but my mom is not ready to let me leave.

I'm disabled and I've watched some events about disabled people but in my city they only call "parents of autistic kids/parents of disabled ppl" to speak at these events. Many events infantilize disabled people and ignore the fact that we grow up, we have less opportunity to get a job, finish a degree. I really wanted these events to invite disabled people and give space to everybody: lgbt+ disabled people, disabled of color, disabled immigrants, etc. Talk about lack of accessibility at work etc

It's a very serious problem tbh. Like a lack of accessibility at work, at school, in the city.

So at the library I work at its two story building and for over a month the elevator wasn't working. We tried to explain to patrons that because the stairs aren't ADA compliant without the elevator we closed the second floor. (The library staff could still bring down books from upstairs and we had a selectionofnew books for perusal downstairs)

LIKE 90% OF THE PATRON RESPONSES WERE ABLEIST. It was so eye opening even for me because I've had this blog for years!!! Like I'm not physically disabled I can walk but the stairs trigger my asthma and my bad knee. But it seriously got to the point That I sent an email to my bosses on the rare occasion that a patron was understanding of the situation.

It really kinda showed me that even though I'm very much disabled ( my glasses rx is very thick and I've got bipolar disorder). I still don't understand the day to day reality of being without physical accessibility options.

So all that to say basically that we hear from the able people all the time. We're actually more primed to extend sympathy to the able parents or caretakers of disabled ppl than we are to offer help/sympathy to disabled people.

And it wasn't always like this!!!! There's archeological evidence that disabled people have always existed and their communities took care of them anyways!!! It's only with the rise of capitalism that we've dehumanized disabled people to the point That we've invented laws to exterminate disabled ppl. (No I'm not just talking about nazi Germany, because actually Hitlers eugenics shit was actually not that different from existing laws and practices in the USA). /end rant

Please please please boost the voices of disabled people and when you see something happening like only focusing on the caretakers of disabled people speak up!!!

Chapter 4: Do you want to ruin love with me?

A few weeks have passed in which Michael and (Y/N) have interacted more comfortably and become closer than at the beginning, of course, (Y/N) has not stopped being someone with a lot of energy when seeing new things, while the blond boy considers that little voice somewhat annoying, it is not because he dislikes it, rather he has not wanted to attract the attention of the Bullies, he always ends up in the direction or if there are blows included, he ends up suspended, and the scolding at home is not very pleasant So let's say, things have been tense there and Michael is breeding a little bit of negativity inside him, if it wasn't for (Y/N), he would have put his full attention on it with no distractions.

They were both in a small park after school, they both agreed not to go home so late and enjoy the afternoon —I'm telling you! In my country they don't celebrate February 14 as enthusiastically as they do here, and that's 1 week away— (Y/N) was casually telling his friend about the upcoming date.

Michael shrugged indifferently, he's never had someone special to give something to, he was the outcast, he only had his mother but there was also a special date for that and certainly his older sister doesn't care —I'm not interested in those dates , they are for fools— The boy quietly put his hands in his pockets.

—Hey, it's not for fools, my mom says you should give something to someone in particular, it's not necessarily someone you like, tell me— She looked curiously with those big eyes and an impulsive question crossed her mind.

—Is there someone you love?— Myers abruptly raised an eyebrow at the girl's question, why did she suddenly change the subject? that girl... although he stopped for a moment and looked at her, what was that on her chest when he thought of...? The boy frantically shook his head before his cheeks betrayed him.

—Meh, I don't have, I can stand you, I don't want a headache with something silly— He said mockingly with a mischievous face, to which (Y/N) frowned and put his hands on his waist in a indignant gesture after Michael scoffed that she was a pain in the ass

—What do you mean!? You're the fool,— she said defensively as they began to run.

Michael couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction. He loved to make her angry just to see the funny faces he would make of her with her little face.

—Am I the fool?— You're the one who doesn't stop talking about cheesy things like Valentine's Day, — he replied sarcastically.

—It's not cheesy!— It's a special date to give something to someone you care about—replied (Y/N) frowning more.

—Yeah, sure, it's very important to silly girls like you,— Michael sneered, and before she could reply, he ran off laughing.

—Michael!— Come here!— she yelled (Y/N) and started running after him, both zigzagging between the trees of the park.

Michael turned from time to time to check that he was being followed and laugh more heartily. He was fascinated by the way they seemed to challenge and chase each other like two mischievous childhood friends.

Finally, tired of running, (Y/N) stopped and sat down on the grass to catch her breath. Michael returned and sat down next to her, a smirk still on his lips.

—You're a cheater,— she said (Y/N) giving him a small tap on her shoulder.

—You're a bad loser,— Michael replied, and they both burst out laughing, unable to maintain the angry facade any longer.

—Well, well, then... Shall we ruin that day? I mean... if that celebration is so silly for you— (Y/N) said amused, the boy's influence was slowly making her do more daring or unimaginable things for her Although she did not deny that this was more fun than following the orders of her parents or older brothers, she observed the amused face of the blond boy, he had a face of complicity.

—Wow, you're more evil than you look!— Michael said jokingly, but they both started walking home, Michael planned many ideas in which to prank others, things...somewhat creepy, but he wanted approval of (Y/N)

—Every day after class... we'll go to my room to plan to ruin that day, whether you like it or not, understood?— Myers suddenly said and with a happy smile, the little girl nodded.

—Hey, I was the one who suggested that, don't take all the credit— (Y/N) she said in protest, her leadership change annoyed her, but Myers ignored her

—Come on, my ideas are better, or did you want to do that with your scary baby ideas?— He annoyed her knowing her reaction

—I'm not a scared baby! I'm in the plan!— She said firmly as she hit his shoulder to show her strength, not because she was a girl was she going to back down from a challenge

—But...— (Y/N) said suddenly —Let it be a secret… I don't want my family to find out, it could ruin things— The young woman mentioned when they reached the front of the Myers house

—Calm down, crying baby, it will be our secret— He said, moving away from her, entering his house, listening the screams of the young

—I'm not a crybaby! I saved you from the bullies, Michael!— She said indignantly as she went to her own house, but inside she was happy. What does it matter if he wasn't interested in the 14th of February? After all, she will have a good time and finally she has a secret of friends, which made her feel excited.

She quickly got to her room after being stopped by her mother and doing the same routine as always. Maybe if she brought a couple of ideas tomorrow afternoon, they could be useful, after all, that's what friends do right? .

Meanwhile, Michael Myers saw his mother conversing on the phone with a man very sweetly ignoring the greeting he gave his mother, he frowned and ran quickly to his room, the gears began to work in his mind and he had planned some how many things, include guts and blood, maybe you would get it with some forest animals, or you can also cut some things up and wrap them in packages!, there are so many ideas that he immediately went to work more enthusiastically than before, Al finally he was not alone! there is someone else with whom you are encouraged to do these things. A little smile crossed his face when he thought of that “annoying” girl, at last he didn't feel alone at school...

Suddenly he heard a knock on the door of his room

—Hey!, you look more enthusiastic, Mike, a declaration of love?— She was Michael's older sister, he frowned when he felt that she interrupted his thoughts

—Leave me alone!— Michael said angrily to his sister when he knocked on the door and she only answered him between laughs and jeers until he kicked her out of his room, going back to what he had, he focused again on his plans to ruin Valentine's Day.

He was excited that someone wanted to join in on his antics, especially (Y/N). Although he didn't like the kitsch of that day, he was intrigued to plan something together, it was the first time someone wanted to do something like that with him and they didn't accuse him with adults.

The next day, he waited for (Y/N) after school. She approached excitedly. —Hello Michael, I already have some ideas,— she said smiling. He nodded. —Let's go to my house, my mom is not here, she went out with another man— He said something annoyed, but he quickly recovered and they ran without rest.

Once in Michael's room, (Y/N) pulled out the ideas she had written down. He frowned as he read them and kept from rolling his eyes in annoyance. —They're too soft,— he complained. —I told you I have better plans.—

—I know, but… — (Y/N) hesitated. Michael was beginning to lose patience.

—Come on, trust me. We will ruin that day like never before— Michael said with a crooked smile that (Y/N) found a little scary. She nodded slowly.

Michael proceeded to explain her sadistic plans: wrapping nasty things as gifts, scattering red paint down the halls, even trapping animals to put in lockers. (Y/N) listened to him with wide eyes, those plans went beyond innocent pranks. But she had already agreed to join Michael, she didn't want to look like a coward, plus she has always been true to her promises, no matter what. She with false emotion she said: —I'm in, we'll make those plans.—

Michael smirked. Both shook hands sealing their alliance...

“After two years as a refugee, my former student M. has received his U.S. resettlement paperwork and is ready to start his new life in America!

I taught M. when I worked at the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in Kabul. The eldest son of a large, loving, but poor family, he spent his earliest years in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Like many Afghan boys, he grew up working to help support his family. But thanks to his obvious intelligence and his family's commitment to education, he was able to attend school and pursue his bachelor's degree.

When Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in August 2021, M.'s family faced danger and persecution as a result of his father's work with the American military. They were eligible for U.S. Special Immigrant Visas, but the process was slow and almost nonfunctional. AUAF was able to evacuate M. to a third country where he could continue his education and wait for his refugee resettlement to the USA to be processed. While finishing his BA as a refugee, he was also supporting his family in Kabul and searching for ways to help them: pursuing their SIV application through the vast maze of American bureaucracy and working with my sister Heather, who filed to sponsor them for Humanitarian Parole.

Over the past two years, M. has become like a member of my family. He's helped my nephew with a school presentation; my niece baked him a cake to celebrate his university graduation. I've talked to his baby niece on the phone. He's helped me learn to read and write Dari Persian, putting up with my endless mistakes and questions. We text each other animal pictures and political frustrations.

Though M.'s family have now received their Humanitarian Parole and SIV petition approvals, they are still waiting for State Department evacuation from Kabul for their visa interview. But for M., good news has finally come: he has received his resettlement paperwork and is arriving in America the day before Thanksgiving!

He could use some help: when he was evacuated from Afghanistan, he was only allowed to take one bag of stuff with him. In America, he'll need more: weather-appropriate clothes, a phone, bus fare, and enough money to continue supporting his family in Kabul while he looks for a job.

This is an opportunity to help give a solid start to a gifted young man who has overcome incredible odds to make it this far— and to help repay an Afghan family who risked it all for America and American values.

Once again reviewing less known/unpopular dramas... Ghost Host, Ghost House (2022, Thai BL) delivers what it promises to be in the first episode: supernatural family drama about ghosts, with a side of romance. I have an affection for media that knows what it wants to be and executes that.

Kevin, now an adult and ready for university, arrives in Thailand to visit family he hasn't seen for a decade - as his mother moved them to the USA when he was young. He's a budding video blogger whose gimmick seems to be: cute gay boy who visits haunted houses. Little does he know that the family he's come to stay with are all dead. The loved ones once separated by geography, as a child of immigrants, are now separated from him in a way he is yet to understand. There at the old family home he also runs into Pleum, a local boy with big dreams who is cheerfully navigating through 5 odd jobs and begins to pursue the visiting hot boy with the same dedication. But whose family is also hiding wounds of his own.

"This flower reflects the reality. Pain hasn't gone elsewhere. It's just hidden, so we can move on and live our lives."

Don't come looking for a thriller or scares or ghost hunting. It's not a fast-paced drama, it's about the characters.

It's charmingly earnest in the two young men's fumbling birth of a romance, elements of whimsical humor in Kevin's ghost family navigating death (think Beetlejuice), and occasionally poignant in discussions of mortality, grief, and letting go. The family relationships are given equal weight to the romance.

There wasn't a tonal whiplash for me. The sweet & sexy parts fit alongside the fact that both MLs are surrounded by death and need to come to terms with it. The tone is fluid. In the midst of life, there is death; in the midst of death there is life.

It's not a deeply profound, philosophical exploration of grieving and I don't think that's a failure because it's not trying to be. It's just characters who are haunted, literally and metaphorically, and who find a way to move on during the course of 8 episodes.

The couple really worked for me (until the writers imo fumbled the end). Post high school, figuring themselves out and what they want. Clearly not virgins and very comfortable with their sexuality and queer desire, while being still awkward & uncertain about how to act around a cute boy you like. I appreciated that the couple is quite sweet & soft without neutering them. They are allowed to be age-appropriate horny! They're also allowed to make mistakes & deal poorly with grief in hard moments, and then apologize and be forgiven for it. Two people who met each other in the worst timing & situation for attempting a romance. Though perhaps without the ghosts that united them, they would have lived out their lives mostly on separate continents & never found home together.

The otp like each other right away - it's external factors pulling them apart. Unresolved grief that must be dealt with and the hovering dramatic tension tension that Kevin is Thai diaspora, essentially American, and this was intended to be a temporary visit to see his relatives. He's presumably considering this a 'vacation fling', while it was clear that Pleum was ready to go all-in. A separation was basically baked into the pairing. I was anxious about how this could really work. Spoiler: happy ending, but I did not entirely like how they got there (see cut).

I would be spoiling too much to discuss in detail, but the family elements are lovely. Bittersweetness in the incomplete time we get with our loved ones. And the subtle tragedy of the opportunities Kevin lost to know his extended family; the taste of home he's been missing as his mother moved on with a new american husband.

Only 2 distracting missteps in the drama. SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING.

A. Kevin is a dual citizen who's mostly lived in America all his life. His English should be perfect but it very much isn't. But tbh to a thai viewer it likely isn't noticeable and this is a thai production; that's the intended audience, not me. So I just used my imagination. It doesn't come up frequently.

B. The requisite separation trope in the last episode is always super annoying to me in kdramas & thai dramas, because it's such a cliche. At least in this case it was foreshadowed several times since early on that Kevin was NOT ready for commitment while Pleum was. (he clearly gets uncomfortable & ducks the question repeatedly when people bring up them being boyfriends. He's not a blushing maiden, this was reluctance to commit to staying in Thailand & settling down with Pleum, despite the connection, compatibility, and everything they went thru together) And it makes sense that he was too young to be brave enough to take such a leap and hadn't made peace with his 1st love Jake's death. So for once, the separation 100% made sense and I wasn't even upset by that part! My issue was how they executed the rest. Frankly, I disagree with the writing choices. I guess they were going with the idea that Kevin was resigned to having missed out. He feels like it's too late. But I hated that they had Pleum waiting for years for Kevin to be ready and it just didn't feel certain to me that they would have reunited except by chance. Like, I wanted Kevin to choose to go to him, full-stop. Not accidentally run into him, sorry that's bullshit to me. Yes, Kevin kept a momento of their time together. Yes, he obviously wasn't over Pleum. But to me it also felt like he was just prepared to move on and never see him again. No me gusta.

There's a romantic sensual reuniting scene and Pleum seems confident that he's not going to let his man go anywhere again. And Kevin is ready to say goodbye to the memory of his 1st love and admit Pleum is the one for him. I did buy-in on the idea that they experienced something truly formative together that no one else would understand. In the end, I did feel like Kevin would make a home with him now. So it's definitely a happy ending. But.. It really annoys me because without this misstep, if they had executed the separate & unite differently, this would be a fav drama I'd rec to everyone.

Lifespan: 1914-1947

Ethnicity: White Irish

Cause of death: Murdered with a gunshot wound to the chest

Human appearance:

ginger hair, green eyes, grey flatcap, not entirely sure how to describe 1920s-30s American fashion so I'll post pictures of what clothes he usually wore when he was alive.

Demon appearance:

He's essentially a tall orange fox demon, a humanoid-ish fox basically. He's tall and lean (roughly as tall as Angel Dust). His face is relatively human minus the sharp teeth, eyes and fox ears. His body has orange fur on his torso that fade out to black from his forearms and from below the knee. His eyes have black scleras and green irises. He wears black trousers, black heeled boots, a white blouse with a black bowtie around the collar, and black waistcoat.. He has a fluffy fox tail for good measure. His fox appearance in Hell is a reference to foxes being portrayed as sly and untrustworthy- like a conman. His hair remains similar to when he was human except it's more orange than ginger and is fluffier to mimic a fox's fur.

Life:

Born in Dublin in 1914, Adrian was born into a poor family. In 1925, his family saw all the prosperity in the USA and moved there...only for it to be less than ideal. Not everyone benefitted, immigrants like him for example, from the roaring 20s so Adrian spent most of his time on the streets. He had a knack for petty theft and pickpocketing as a child. As he grew older and the Great Depression hit, he found himself needing to think bigger. He began to get into con artistry. Scamming desperate people for their money. It wasn't much but it helped him get by. He once tried (and failed) to scam a member of the New York Mafia but instead of handing his ass to him...Adrian landed himself a job. He began working for the mafia as a conman, bootlegger and spy. He often worked at night and had to be incredibly calculating if he wanted to make money out of someone. When Prohibited ended in 1933 and the criminal bootlegging industry fell, Adrian found himself struggling again. The pressure of losing an important source of income meant Adrian had to bring in more money from his scams. He was stuck doing this up until his death in 1947. He was murdered by a gunshot to the chest as an act of revenge because it turns out that people don't like being cheated of their valuables.

Afterlife:

Unsurprisingly, a life of lying and deceiving landed Adrian in Hell. He was determined to make his afterlife different though. He spent his life with barely anything...he won't let his afterlife be the same. This time though he was in luck... sorta. The Radio Demon: feared but respected. He found Adrian when he was new to Hell and homeless. Spotting an opportunity, he promised Adrian power he could've only dreamt of when he was alive...for a price. Adrian however, didn't see any other choice, so he reluctantly accepted the deal. His soul in exchange for a place as Alastor's right hand demon and power. The powers were voodoo, shadow manipulation and fortune-telling (the only limit for that is that he can't tell his own future and yes I got inspo from Dr. Facilier from Princess and the Frog). All of this gave Adrian the nickname "The Shadow Demon" (yes that was a Princess and The Frog reference which works nicely considering Keith David voices Husk and Facilier). His power and influence at Alastor's side helped Adrian become an overlord himself. Desperate sinners give him their souls in exchange for his fortune-telling or he cons demons for their souls. Adrian ended up at the Hazbin Hotel to work as a butler and Alastor's minion. He has everything he never had as a human...but is it really worth it? Is being used as Alastor's stooge worth the status?

what does it mean to be an American to you? what does your perfect america look like?

i don’t really have a concept of a perfect america or what it is to be an american beyond “person who lives in the usa” but i’ll give it a shot.

what it is to be an ideal american:

open to new ideas and different perspectives, we are a huge and diverse nation that’s honestly incredibly polarized at the moment politically and my favorite flavor of fellow citizen is one who can disagree while still respecting the other side

understanding of different cultural backgrounds because most of us come from immigrant backgrounds at some point (obviously excluding ppl who are first nations), we are a melting pot culture

progressive, always looking to the future while remembering/honoring the past, we have a relatively short history as a country compared to many but we’re a people who are always looking for new possibilities while remembering both the good and bad parts of our past (good would be our dedication to innovation, bad would be…. well that’s a long list, this country has fucked up a lot)

caring about human rights, equality/equity, most of us are descended from people who came to america to escape something going on in our ancestors’ home countries so i believe it’s our job to create a society where we don’t have to worry about oppression no matter where it comes from

cares about the land and its history — what did your area look like before european settlers colonized it? who lived there and what was their language/culture/general mode of existing? was the land taken care of or maintained a certain way by the local tribes/nations before it was colonized?

what is my idea of a perfect america:

native communities have the resources they need to live happy healthy lives in their homelands, with their languages maintained and the land maintained the way it has been historically and with science in mind (controlled burns, cultivated forests and natural habitat intermixed with holistically farmed land, wildlife corridors, etc)

education is entirely secular and well funded so that people don’t need to resort to private schools to educate their kids well

less funding for the military generally speaking, redirect those funds towards socialized healthcare and higher education

less funding for police, redirect that funding towards community services

in fact completely overhaul the police system, require psychological evals to root out the bullies and corrupt people, give them a minimum of 2-4 years of schooling specifically for law enforcement, require unconscious bias training, and make it so that every lawsuit for police misconduct comes out of the police’s pension funds

NO MORE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, implement ranked choice voting, do anything to end the two party system

progressive tax, better labor laws, let’s make america the land of people who don’t have to exist from paycheck to paycheck like most of us do now

restoration of native habitats and species. when there’s 20 million bison roaming the plains and wolves in most of the lower 48 again and the wetlands are wetlanding and the forests are foresting and the deserts not expanding and the amphibians and insects and fish are all at healthy population levels i will be happy

let’s talk “american freedom” for a second. i HATE the wet dream conservatives have about a very militaristic ideal of freedom. to me when i envision what i wish “american freedom” meant i yearn for a future where everyone has opportunity, can participate in democracy (our democracy isn’t perfect, we have to strengthen it), can do/be anything they want, etc

to achieve these ideals i think i most like the term “social democracy” with a mixed economy — i like the ideal of other more complete types of socialism but believe that a mixed economy is a more reasonable goal. healthcare and education would be socialized, housing and other things would be at least partially socialized, and social services would have more resources.

look i really just want everyone to be healthy, happy, without giving assholes the opportunities they currently have to hurt others, to oppress minorities/the poor/homeless, etc
