The Nine Muses - Calliope (Epic Poetry) (1780). Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (German, 1722-1789). Oil on canvas. Neue Galerie - Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel.
Calliope is depicted as holding a writing tablet, since she often provided inspiration to those who would write the poetry. Her name, Calliope, means “beautiful-voiced” in Ancient Greek. In Ancient Greece, the epic poems were set to music and sung.

Menelaus And Paris By Johann Heinrich Tischbein The Elder 1757
"With this he threw himself on Paris, seizing him by his helm’s thick horsehair crest, whirled him round and dragged him towards the Achaean lines. Paris was choked by the richly inlaid strap of his helm, drawn tight beneath his chin, pressing on his soft throat. And Menelaus would have hauled him off and won endless glory, had not Zeus’ daughter Aphrodite, swift to see it, broken the ox-hide strap, so the empty helm was left in Menelaus’ strong grip."
-Homer, The Iliad, Book 3.310-394

The Nine Muses - Erato (Lyric Poetry) (1781). Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (German, 1722-1789). Oil on canvas. Neue Galerie - Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel.
Erato is the Muse of love poetry. In the Orphic hymn to the Muses, it is Erato who charms the sight. Since the Renaissance she has mostly been shown with a wreath of myrtle and roses, holding a lyre, or a small kithara, a musical instrument often associated with Apollo.
