Them dang dirty foreigners with their weird Romanian/Russian/German accents and their looking like a mix of Rasputin and an offensive Jewish stereotype and their evil rapey mind control, amirite? I mean, boy has this one aged poorly.

You definitely weren't telling your mother that you were here of all places. You didn’t see the shame in it, but she'd lose her marbles. But today had been an off day. Classes felt too long. Twirling practice had been agonizing. Even Sarah's hug goodbye at the end of practice didn't feel like enough.
And now, in hopes to make your day better, you were standing on the South. Bike at your hip as you pushed it towards the parking lot of Heyward's Seafood. You were hoping you might be able to catch Pope and just Pope, none of his friends. That would be awkward. Kiara obviously didn't like you. JJ and John B, you weren't even sure if they knew about you.
You and Pope weren’t anything too serious, right now at least. You hadn't told anyone about him but Sarah, obviously, she's your best friend. Plus, people on the North were meaner than mean when they didn’t like something. And you didn't think Pope had told anyone either. It wasn't a conversation you guys had ever had. You didn't mind all that much. You were having fun with this. The thrill of it all. His sweet face and kind hands. He was an angel.
Mister Heyward was outside cleaning fish when you reached. You placed your bike against the wall and smiled at him as he looked up to the noise. He seemed panicked for a second. “Miss Y/L, is everything alright? Did those damn boys forget something in your groceries?” You smiled even more, a soft laugh. “No, no! Don’t worry. Everything was perfect. I was just wondering..” You took a breath, shoulders deflating a little. “Is Pope home?” You asked softly, carefully. With a smile of course.
You watched the older man before you melt with a knowing smile. “He’s up in his room. You’re more than welcomed up there.”
You were beaming up the stairs of their home with red cheeks and sparkling veins. You reached the boys closed door carefully. You knocked gently, hands folding over your front almost nervously. You had never just shown up. There was always a text. Or a call.
The door was quick to fling open. There was Pope trying to jump into a shoe. You couldn’t help your smile.
He looked up at the silence and automatically dropped his shoe. “You’re here?” He whispered in a shock. You smiled, small. “I know, I should’ve called. I’m sorry. I just.. wanted to see you. You know?”
He looked amazed for a moment. Almost not believing his luck.
You waved a gentle hand at his fallen shoe. “I can come back another time, though. If you’re busy. I don’t want to bother—” Pope was shaking his head quickly, smiling brightening his features. He kicked away his shoe and gently took your closest hand as he yanked you into his room. “I was actually on my way to go see you. I was going to text. Like a heads up. But I know your mom isn’t home yet, so I was going to take my chances. But this, this is perfect.”
You were so damn warm. You smile, head tilted to the side as you squeezed his hand in yours. “Yeah?”
Pope smiled, rolling his eyes at your fond teasing. “Yeah, perfect.” You couldn’t stop your smile as you pushed up on the tips of your shoes and pressed a gentle kiss onto his lips. He leaned into them. Hands still attached, but his free one caught your hip and balanced you. Your other free hand was gently on his bicep. He tasted like honey, summer, and smiles.
“You want to go get dinner? Your favorite place then eat it at the marsh behind your house?”
Today had you feel awful about everything and anything, appetite included. But now, staring at this boy, which his hand in yours. You could definitely eat some food.
You beamed. “For sure, angel.” He scoffed a laugh, cheeks red and sweet. Your hip pushed into his a little as you two went.

Lynne Reid Banks, who has died aged 94, hit a jackpot with her first book, The L-Shaped Room (1960), the story of an unmarried middle-class girl, Jane Graham, who takes a dingy room in London to hide her unwanted pregnancy. The novel was a cracking read that caught the cusp of a momentous change in social attitudes. Its profile rose even higher when it became a film in 1962, with Leslie Caron playing its heroine. It sold in its millions and never went out of print.
This success was both a blessing and curse for Reid Banks. In the decades that followed, she published nine further novels (two of them sequels to The L-Shaped Room), two award-winning volumes of biographical fiction on the lives of the Brontës, two books about Israel and numerous books for younger readers. But nothing she wrote ever matched the acclaim for The L-Shaped Room.
Reid Banks was a dramatic and dynamic woman who lived her life with gusto. If the slights of the literary world sometimes hurt her, they never quenched the energy and passion she brought to her work. Stories flowed effortlessly from her pen, characterised by lively dialogue, well-crafted plots and compulsive readability.
The Indian in the Cupboard (1980), a children’s book she wrote for and dedicated to her youngest son, Omri, came closest to her first success, in sales, translation into 20 languages and transformation into a Hollywood film in 1995. That pleased her. But in the same year, she expressed outrage that her longstanding publishers had turned down her latest adult novel. She nevertheless found another publisher and received considerable praise for Fair Exchange (1998), a book she dedicated to her friend Norma Kitson, whose remarkable struggle against apartheid in South Africa infuses its story.
Lynne was born in Barnes, London, the only child of a Scottish doctor, James Reid Banks, and an Irish actor, Muriel (nee Marsh, who went by the stage name Muriel Alexander), and began her education at a Catholic boarding school. At the start of the second world war, aged 10, she travelled with her mother and a cousin to Canada, which she thoroughly enjoyed. On her return to London, she went to Rada, and thence began acting in provincial rep, like the heroine of The L-Shaped Room.
It was during this period that she met and enraged the young John Osborne, whose first wife, the actor Pamela Lane, was her close friend. Osborne’s letters revealed not only his dislike of her, but the probability that she inspired one of the main characters in his own first success, Look Back in Anger.
A combative streak in Reid Banks got her into spats all her life. But she was no less forthright in her judgments of herself than of others. She did not hesitate to call herself a failed actress, failed playwright (of several plays) and failed television reporter, before her true career took off.
In the doldrums, she began writing freelance journalism, and when she went to interview the head of the embryonic ITN for the Radio Times, she also talked him into employing her. She thereby became one of the first two female reporters on television in 1955. This did not satisfy her for long, however, as (she claimed) they only gave her “the rubbish” to do. When she complained, they put her into a cubbyhole and set her to work writing scripts.
Bored stiff, she began using ITN’s stationery supplies and time to start work on her first novel. She later recalled how the newsreader Reginald Bosanquet would read a page off her typewriter in mocking amusement. But the laugh was on Reggie when the Evening Standard later ran the headline: “ITN girl sells film script for £25,000.” The real sum for The L-Shaped Room was £20,000, but that was still princely in those days.
She was not happy with the film, which changed the book’s story. It was a hit, but it took her 30 years to forgive the director, Bryan Forbes. It also infuriated her that people assumed she had written of single motherhood from personal experience, rather than imagination. Although on the crest of a wave of fame, money and success, Reid Banks left the country and did not return for a decade.
She had met the man whom in 1965 she was to marry, the Israeli sculptor Chaim Stephenson, while he was visiting Britain. She was not Jewish, but she went out to Israel and loved it, becoming an Israeli citizen. The couple lived on a kibbutz near the Sea of Galilee, and their three sons were born there.
It surprised but delighted her, soon after her arrival in Israel, to be asked to leave her hot, tiring work in the vineyards to teach English to a class of children. She threw herself into this new occupation with zeal, relishing the chance to use her acting skills, and achieved outstanding results.
But as the years went by, she missed Britain, and in the early 1970s she came back, the family settling uncomfortably at first in the London suburbs, but later living happily in a farmhouse in Beaminster, Dorset, and later still settling in Shepperton in Surrey. Her output of books for children continued (she produced many sequels and series), and she travelled, gardened and wrote for newspapers.
Chaim died in 2016. Reid Banks is survived by her sons, Adiel, Gillon and Omri, and her grandchildren, Daniel, David and Paloma.

I got the DVD of the Gielgud-Burton Hamlet! It is a little better than the video I already had! It looks like that one zoomed in a bit by cutting off the very top and bottom of the image. The DVD video still isn't terribly clear - it was shown in movie theatres! it must have been better than this originally! - but for something that was supposed to be destroyed, I guess it's not bad.
The "unseen interview footage" the box advertises is just this, split into the interview and the trailer:

If only Electronovision had caught on. So many iconic performances could've been preserved. :( Anyway, the DVD also has filmographies and lists of awards for Gielgud, Burton, and Hume Cronyn.
I wish there was a commentary track. There could have been - Gielgud was still alive when the DVD was made, as were Cronyn, Eileen Herlie, and Robert Milli. John Cullum, Linda Marsh, and (of course) Richard L. Sterne are still around today! And now I'm wistfully thinking about a world where William Redfield lived long enough to do DVD commentaries. Imagine.

Tagged by @theinquisitxor to post which books I would keep if I could only keep 20. Normally it would be tricky to choose only 20, but with the additional rules of no repeated authors or multiple books per series, I kept stalling at around 13! Here's my final answer (for today).

Omg Yuki—the way I genuinely considered sitting down and making a PowerPoint presentation 😂
I won’t. I could—but I won’t.
There’s a ton of cute presentations on this website about “why you should watch this show uwu it’s so good and the characters are adorable and it’s got a great message you’re gonna love it!” and, well…that’s not Attack on Titan for me.
Aot is…a curiosity to me. I do really like a lot of the characters, the animation and music are gorgeous, and the story is sufficiently intriguing. And yes, ultimately, it does have a message I can get behind (War Is Bad. Stick to the classics.) but it wasn’t a show that grabbed me instantly. I had to simmer in it for a while—and I do mean a while.
I suppose mostly what I want to talk about is the Disk Horse, which I kind of hate to do because tumblr is allergic to nuance—but. I also like to talk. So here I go.
(This is going under a cut because I CANNOT shut up. Also, I’m going to get into some dumb fandom drama nonsense and I would like to hide that in order to maintain my dignity.)
I actually first became aware of aot BECAUSE of the discourse. I had more posts on my dash claiming that it was a Bad Show and Don’t Watch It than posts that…actually told me anything about it.
Eventually as I started easing into exploring anime, I decided to check it out. Out of morbid curiosity, mostly. I wanted to know what was so bad about it.
For the first three seasons, I was a little clueless. An annoying protagonist with questionable morals? Main characters attached to some sort of military organization? The protagonist being the Exceptional One, the savior because of his unique abilities? …guys, these are all standard shonen tropes, and I’d only watched like…five animes at that point (I’ve now watched, like, ten. My immersion rate is s l o w.)
Then I reached the end of season 3, and I wen “ohhh.” Not because everyone who’d been insisting it was Bad were right, but because I could actually, finally see what they were talking about.
I hear the word “allegory” get thrown around a lot when it comes to aot, and…honestly, I don’t think that’s the right word. An allegory is a direct, deliberate parallel with either a real life event, or another story. Aot is not an allegory of anything. Now, does it use some real life elements as worldbuilding and narrative devices in its own story? Yes, and sometimes to a “yikes” effect.
But this is a fantasy story that takes place in a fantasy world about races of people that don’t exist. The parallels can be drawn, but it’s not an intentional allegory.
Think of the difference between Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia. C.S. Lewis was very clear both in his writing and when talking about his work that it was a Christianity allegory. Aslan represents Jesus—created the world, died for its sins, all knowing, all powerful, does not always intervene, eventually edged out by a false god at the end of the world, etc. etc.
Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings took a lot of inspiration from his experiences in World War I. Read anything about LOTR, or watch any of the movies’ supplemental material, and that’s one of the first things you’ll hear. BUT—did old John Roald Roald intend it to be a one-to-one allegory? No.
The orcs are not the Germans. Humans and elves aren’t the English and French. This is not a fantasy retelling of real-world events—it uses elements of real-world warfare to enhance its own narrative. The faces in the Dead Marshes. Frodo’s life-altering trauma. The hobbits’ return to an unchanged safe haven, only to find they have changed irrevocably. Sam’s/Faramir’s introspection on the “evil” of the men they fight.
Aot does the latter, not the former. And while using imagery we associate with Jewish persecution and the holocaust…isn’t a choice I would have made when writing a story, it wasn’t a deliberately anti-Semitic choice.
We can talk all day long about how it’s not a wise choice, and how the implications can have ramifications—but this wasn’t something the mangaka did out of long-held prejudice, whether conscious or unconscious. I mean, do you really walk away thinking we’re supposed to HATE the Eldians? (If so, get better reading comprehension.)
I guess that’s what my Attack on Titan presentation should really be—teaching people how to read and therefore understand the themes and story correctly. Either that, or I could just make a ship chart and explain why Armin deserves to bang every single character, and in what order he should do so.

Well…let’s flashback to that moment in the living room/kitchen shall we?

*walked into the hallway, just finished washing the dishes instead of using the machine with a grin* “Alright dishes are clean! Hopefully, no more dirty dishes until dinner time haha. If anyone needs me, I’mma be on the couch…might even take a nap.”
*He hears Stella response with a simple ‘Okay!’ from the bathroom pausing the shower for a moment, as he heard for the kids voices hearing the sound of video games and toys rattling around upstairs. Then Steve enters the living room and sits comfortably on the couch, turning on the TV and flipping through channels.*
“Alright.” He says laying comfortably on the couch, flipping across the TV guide finding any entertaining movies or shows to watch until Channel 7 titled episode caught his eye, “…hm?”
The moment he clicked on the specific selected channel, the news anchor spoke about The New Captain America, which intrigued but confused Steve because he remembers giving Sam the opportunity to be Captain America, yes, but he think he would remember a text message from his old friends about being presented to the damn world as the new heroes.
He was on retirement and tried to stay relaxed about world news, he deserves the most rest of all after serving for so long with great pride.
But nothing prepared Steven Grant Rogers for the face among his TV screen, as he heard his wife’s footsteps entering the living room freshly bathed in sweatpants watching him. She asked him what happened but he only pointed to the TV screen as the words John Walker appeared next to the title of Captain America..
“Who the f- is that?!” He cursed muttering loudly.
His jaw dropped onto the literal floor, as a million thoughts ran across his head.
1) Who was that? That’s not Sam!
2) Why was he carrying my freaking shield (or should I say a copy of it)? Matter a fact, where is my Shield?! I might show this man a Brooklyn beat down.
3) How did the US say yes to this?!
4) I’mma need a drink!
Let’s just say, it took all of Steve’s strength to not leave his nice home and call Natasha. They were trying to retire, yet this stuff happens. Thankfully Sam and Bucky handle, giving them insight on their current status.
However that didn’t stop Steve to sneak out of the house at one point (Stella was not happy about that!!) to help them after a call from Bucky. This man got tears in his eyes hearing that Sam will be Captain America officially.

George Du Maurier's 1894 novel was called Trilby, as were many of the stage adaptations and early silent film versions. But if you cast John Barrymore as the sinister hypnotist, you almost have to call your film Svengali. It's one of Barrymore's juiciest movie performances, but it surprisingly didn't earn him an Oscar nomination -- an honor he never received. To add to the irony, the best actor Oscar that year went to his brother Lionel for A Free Soul (Clarence Brown, 1931), and one of the actors who did receive a nomination was Fredric March for playing Tony Cavendish, an obvious caricature of John Barrymore, in The Royal Family of Broadway (George Cukor and Cyril Gardner, 1930). Though Barrymore's Svengali doesn't particularly deserve an award, it's the best thing about the film aside from the sets by Anton Grot that were influenced by German expressionism and did earn Grot a nomination, as did cinematographer Barney McGill's filming of them. Like many early talkies, Svengali is slackly paced, as if director Archie Mayo, who learned his craft in the silent era, was still slowing things down so title cards could be placed at the appropriate intervals. It also has some problems of tone: Svengali is not quite the sinister monster you expect him to be from his reputation as an archetype of masterful control. In the beginning he's the butt of horseplay from some of his fellow Paris bohemians, the painters known as The Laird (Donald Crisp) and Taffy (Lumsden Hare), who decide he doesn't bathe often enough and dump him into a bathtub. We know his potential for evil after he causes Madame Honori (Carmel Myers) to commit suicide, but even her character is played for comedy before her untimely end. In this adaptation, by J. Grubb Alexander, the plot revolves around Svengali's manipulation of Trilby (Marian Marsh), an artist's model whose potential as a singer -- even though she can't quite carry a tune -- he deduces from the shape of her mouth. He uses his hypnotic powers to turn her into a diva, though the one performance we see from her, a bit of the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor, doesn't merit the ovation it receives -- perhaps he hypnotized the audience, too. But control of Trilby comes at a cost: Svengali's health begins to decline, and Trilby's career along with it, until at the end they both die as she performs in a nightclub in Cairo, second-billed to a troupe of belly-dancers. Only the lovestruck young artist known as "Little Billee" (Bramwell Fletcher), who has devoted his life to tracking Trilby in hopes of winning her back, is there to witness her end. Thanks to Barrymore, and some good support from character actors like Luis Alberni, who plays Svengali's assistant with the improbable name Gecko, Svengali is never unwatchable, and it mostly avoids the antisemitic notes that many have observed in the character, who is said to have mysterious origins, perhaps in Poland, in the novel and its adaptations.

The Minnesota Twins have not been playing good baseball lately. They have still held a Wildcard spot going down the stretch and a big series with the Royals started tonight in Kansas City. The Royals got the scoring started in the third inning when Kyle Isbel drew a one-out walk. Tommy Pham doubled him home and the Royals took a one-run lead after three innings of play. Kansas City got back to work in the fourth as Michael Massey smacked a Zebby Matthews fastball out to right for a solo homer. This doubled the KC lead to two. The Royals kept adding on in the fifth when Tommy Pham reached on an infield single. MJ Melendez singled to right and Hunter Renfroe knocked in a pair with a single to right. This extended the Kansas City lead to four after five innings of play. Meanwhile, Cole Ragans tossed six shutout innings and the Royals bullpen did the rest. Jams McArthur fanned two in the seventh and Sam Long put up a zero in the eighth. Hunter Renfroe led-off the eighth with a single and a wild pitch moved up pinch-runner Dairon Blanco. With one out, Yuli Gurriel hit a sac fly to left. The Royals lead grew to five and John Schreiber had a 1-2-3- ninth. Kansas City took the first game of a big series.
-Final Thoughts- Zebby Matthews tried to do his best, but got hit hard at times. He went five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Ronny Henriquez threw two perfect innings and Caleb Thielbar gave up a run in the ninth. The Twins scattered four hits and went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position. They left four men on base. The Royals have now taken over the second wildcard spot by a half game. The Twins are 4.5 games ahead of the Mariners for the final playoff spot. Tomorrow, Bailey Ober faces Alec Marsh in Game 2.
