With so much ground to cover - ending not only the sequel trilogy but also bringing to a close the entire 42-year-old Skywalker Saga - The Rise of Skywalker also almost included a scene that showed the brutality of Kylo Ren. With Chewbacca captured, the film was set to include his torture at the hands of Ren, and while the scene was included in Rae Carson's novelisation it was removed from the film and Collider look at the ommission and what it meant for Episode IX. According to Suotamo, the cut scene saw Kylo resorting to mentally invading Chewbacca's mind to find out where Rey, Finn, and Poe were going. It's a skill the First Order's leader used to terrifying effect on Rey and Poe during The Force Awakens. But he is overwhelmed by Chewie's memories of his childhood past, and eventually leaves the Wookiee alone. Suotamo said the scene made him uncomfortable for many reasons; being restrained in a full Wookiee getup took a physical toll, and apparently, Driver was in full method mode during the filming of The Rise of Skywalker. He "psyched himself to be a real monster through it all," Suotamo wrote. The scene between Chewbacca and Kylo Ren also took place in the official Rise of Skywalker novelization by Rae Carson, which expanded upon the film's events. It also played a major role in convincing Kylo to turn his back on the dark side, though Suotamo felt the scene was cut due to it being too dark, and that it might have impacted the weight of Kylo's redemption. "Perhaps the transformation of Kylo Ren into Ben Solo would also have suffered with such an inhuman act that some viewers would see it as unforgivable even though he ended up saving the entire galaxy." Star Wars: The Acolyte - Our Thoughts
Star Wars is a big part of our lives. We never miss any of the movies or spin off series. Oddly, this is our first Star Wars themed podcast. We share what we thought about each episode of The Acolyte, and of course go on tangents to other series and topics while we do so. We recorded this podcast just before it was announced that the show will not have another season. Did you watch The Acolyte? What did you think? If you haven't listened to our podcasts before, we usually message each other to share our thoughts as we discuss a variety of topics as we go about our day. Here, of course, we sat down together for the conversation.
Who are we at the Birds on Power Lines Podcast? We are a mom and young adult child team having the time of our lives talking about things we love and care about!

Review : Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Tumblr media
Of all film sagas and intellectual properties, few can hold a candle to the cultural impact connected to the mighty Star Wars franchise.  After extremely meager, shoestring beginnings, the vision and foresight of George Lucas not only turned his creation into a true phenomenon, it inherently changed the commercial nature of films forever.  After forty-plus years, spin-off stories and endless speculation, the original trilogy of trilogies comes to a close in 2019 as the world readies itself for Star Wars : The Rise of Skywalker.
Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) has appeared seemingly from nowhere, posing a threat to the power that Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has amassed in the wake of the death of Snoke.  With the help of a Sith Wayfinder, one of two in the galaxy, Ren is able to track down Palpatine, who attempts to persuade Ren to the Dark Side by revealing that he created Snoke.  Palpatine also offers Ren a vast armada of Star Destroyers before charging him with a quest to seek out and kill Rey (Daisy Ridley), the last of the remaining active Jedi.  As Rey continues her Jedi training under the supervision of General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Chewbaca seek out information from a spy within the ranks of the First Order.  To the horror of the resistance, they discover that Palpatine is alive and actively seeking to strike down all threats to his power.  With the fate of the galaxy in their hands, the group of Resistance fighters and friends band together, seek out resources throughout the galaxy and ultimately attempt to make a stand once and for all against Palpatine in a journey involving much education, pain and sacrifice.
Sacrifice really and truly is the name of the game in this film.  Power, friends, pride, dark desires and souls are all put on the sacrificial table throughout the course of The Rise of Skywalker, with multiple characters feeling the pain that comes in the wake of said sacrifices.  Ren and Rey are given paralleling journeys of familial discovery, Finn is given new ways to confront where he stands in regards to his current involvement in the Resistance versus his former involvement as a Storm Trooper, Poe is given new dimension and new responsibility in rapid succession, and Leia makes a grand gesture in hopes of teaching her son that he is still redeemable in spite of his quest for dark power.  Even Hux is allowed to complete his unique character arc that has existed in the modern Star Wars trilogy involving the First Order that fits in with the sacrificial theme.
For all of the complaining that the Star Wars fandom is capable of, J.J. Abrams did manage to take ideas presented by Rian Johnson in the previous film and not only integrate them back into the storytelling, but expand on them in extremely fascinating ways.  In particular, the psychic connection between Ren and Rey is back, but the way that the two are able to not only interact with one another, but the environments around them as well, makes for truly captivating cinema.  The pattern of numerous planet jumping that seems to have invaded the modern run of Star Wars movies is present, but luckily it is not as disorienting as it was in films like Rogue One.  Some would call the wide range of cast members that make appearances, both current and present, done in the vein of fan service, but in my opinion, it is mostly done tastefully, and not at the expense of the spirit of the story.
The balance of current characters versus legacy characters is sound, with nobody presenting themselves in a way that feels forced or out of place, or jarring to the point of disrupting the viewing experience.  The growing energy between Ren and Rey is really allowed to shine front and center for The Rise of Skywalker, with their chemistry doing much of the heavy lifting in regards to the tension present in the film.  As with the tradition of each preceding film, the scale continues to rise, with the sheer quantity of ships in this film reaching mind-blowing limits, and the menagerie of creatures on Pasaana mirroring that of a real-life Burning Man festival.  The hand to hand battles are some of the stronger presented in the series, and though it may have been a bit of overkill in the final battle, it was impressive to see the number of ships that showed up.  The continual use of familiar locations as grounds for new exploration is also effective, both in terms of the present narrative and the nostalgic echoes they provide.
Daisy Ridley manages to find a delicate balance between confidence and uncertainty, which plays well against the rage-filled determination of Adam Driver.  John Boyega and Oscar Isaac keep the bromance going with plenty of comedic banter and inspirational support during the battles.  Carrie Fisher’s performance is bittersweet in light of her passing during The Last Jedi, and to be completely honest, I cannot tell how much was shot previously and how much is CGI, which is a testament to the CGI work if it was used.  The familiar folks do what they’ve been doing for years, with Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams all falling right back into stride for their famous characters.  Damhnall Gleeson is given less to do than the previous two films, but in light of Richard E. Grant and Ian McDiarmid putting in villainous performances of their own, the balance of bad guys works out.  Keri Russell, Kelly Marie Tran, and Joonas Suotamo pop up as familiar faces as well.  The sheer volume of talented people that lend their voice talents is massive, with the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Sir Alec Guiness, Frank Oz, Liam Neeson and many more making vocal cameos.  At the risk of going into true spoiler territory, I will refrain from mentioning more names, but rest assured that you will not be disappointed by those lending their presence to this epic wrap-up.
For what it’s worth, it’s certainly something to think about now that we’ve reached the end of the main Star Wars road.  The franchise shows no signs of slowing down in terms of side stories, but the main narrative and its iconic characters have ingrained themselves deeply into the hearts of many, so seeing the story come to a close carries weight.  It will be fun, however, to try and watch all nine films (and maybe even Rogue One thrown in for posterity) in a long weekend once The Rise of Skywalker finds it’s way to home release.  Don’t wait, however, for home release on this one... definitely go check it out in theater.

If there's something good about this third lockdown, it's the fact that now I have time to read these interesting biographies of two Finnish filmmakers who made it in Hollywood. 📚 @joonassuotamo played the role of Chewbacca in the new (Disney era) Star Wars movies and @rennyharlin has directed many Hollywood films (including Die Hard 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 & Deep Blue Sea). 🎬 - #joonassuotamo #rennyharlin #biography #kirja #book #books #filmmaker #actor #director #näyttelijä #ohjaaja #chewbacca #wookie #starwars #tähtiensota #disney #lucasfilm #movie #film #cinema #elokuva #diehard #anightmareonelmstreet #thelongkissgoodnight #hollywood #elämäkerta #moviedirector #finnish #finland #suomi https://www.instagram.com/p/CYgNc47NqT5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Star Wars fans, if you're not already watching Wednesday on Netflix then get season one watched and come back for season two as joining the fun are two GFFA stars. The prequel trilogy, Willow and The Acolyte star Joonas Suotamo will make a guest appearance in the second season, while The Mandalorian season 3 guest star Christopher Lloyd - no stranger to the Addams Family having starred as Uncle Fester in the two early 90's Barry Sonnenfeld big screen movies - will return. What roles they'll be playing we don't know, but if that's not enough to get you interested, we don't know what is. https://twitter.com/NetflixUK/status/1787829864050901434 Netflix announced Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, and Noah Taylor have also joined the show as full-time cast members. Piper will portray a character named Capri. The streamer also confirmed previous reports Steve Buscemi has signed on for a big role as Barry Dort. (He’s expected to play Nevermore Academy’s new principle but perhaps he’s someone else altogether.) The newbies will join Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Hunter Doohan, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa, and Isaac Ordonez on the series. Season two will also feature a litany of guest stars headlined by Lloyd. He played Uncle Fester in the 1991 and 1993 big screen Addams Family installments. (The show’s own Fester, Fred Armisen, is also set to appear.) Joanna Lumley, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suotamo will also pop up during season two in guest roles. Lumley will portray Grandmama, a character we hoped to see this season. Netflix also confirmed Thandiwe Newton will round out the list of guest stars as someone named Dr. Fairburn. Now that sounds like a Nevermore Academy leader. [amazon box="1368095194"]

The Han Solo origin story is pacing well behind fellow standalone movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which took in $29 million in Thursday-evening previews in mid-December of 2016 on its way to a $71 million Friday and a three-day debut of $155 million. Solo grossed $14.1 million in Thursday previews for a projected $35 million Friday. (Solo does have bragging rights to landing the best preview gross for a Memorial Day release.) Solo is the first of the four titles in the revitalized Star Wars franchise to brave the summer box office. It also opens a mere five months after Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi hit theaters, raising the possibility of fatigue. Heading into the weekend, tracking suggested Solo, directed by Ron Howard, would debut to $130 million-$150 million. #HollywoodCiak via #TheHollywoodReporter #Solo #AStarWarsStory #SoloAStarWarsStory #StarWars #RonHoward #AldenEhrenreich #WoodyHarrelson #EmiliaClarke #DonaldGlover #ThandieNewton #PhoebeWallerBridge #JoonasSuotamo #PaulBettany #saga #boxoffice #GeorgeLucas #weekend #HollywoodReporter #followme
