When a home is broken into the police are dispatched to investigate the scene. We inventory our valuables to see what may be stolen. A person slips a stolen item into a pocket and attempts to leave the store. The police come and charge the individual with theft. A body is discovered and a crime scene is setup. . Every effort is made to identify the person. Then a task force is put together to collect evidence to discover what was the cause of death for this person. Was it a natural death or was criminal intent involved in the person’s death. . Why isn’t the emotional, physical or sexual abuse of a child handled in the same manner? An innocent life is at stake. A child may lose hers or his life at the hands of a monster. . Shouldn’t an investigation be immediately started to preserve evidence? Shouldn’t the child be moved to a safe place? There should medical and physiological child experts ready to help the child. Hasn’t a crime been committed when a child is being abused? . We as a society have to put the highest value on our children’s lives. Is there anything more important than a child? We have to protect our children from the individuals who inflict their wills on a child. . The effects of child abuse can and do last a lifetime for the survivors. Murder has no statues of limitations for prosecution. Child sexual and physical abuse should be handled the same way. . A criminal destroyed a child’s childhood and left the survivor with a lifetime of emotions, triggers or traumas to heal.
