The sad tale of flight 007 should be remembered for the deadly risks taken by the U.S. military-industrial complex. Poor and working people shouldn’t believe White House lies about the Soviet Union 38 years ago or the People’s Republic of China today.

22. A misunderstanding leads the US and Soviet governments to proclaim that Margo & Sergei are in love.

It was rare that Margo was summoned to Tom's office these days. She was mostly autonomous in NASA – although this year she had been forced into putting guns on the Moon and working with the Soviets. Margo should be glad she could be summoned to Tom's office at all – he was supposed to be on KAL 007. A lucky escape. She knew why Ellen hadn't made it onto the plane but was still unsure why Tom hadn't taken his scheduled flight to Seoul.

Until he slammed down a copy of The Enquirer with a photograph of her and Sergei Nikulov on the front.

"Do you want to tell me why there is a photo of you and the head of the Soyuz program at a jazz club in the middle of the night?" She opened her mouth to explain. He cut her off. "Dammit, Margo, his tongue is in your ear!"

Margo flushed. The damning photograph certainly made it look that way. But Sergei, slightly tipsy from the drinks inside 11:59, had just been whispering in her ear about schematics to ensure they were not overheard. There was no affair. No collusion – that didn't benefit both Washington and Moscow. Just a friendly drink between colleagues.

She tried to explain as much to Tom, but he wasn't having it. "And what about the IAC last year?"

Confused, Margo took a deeper dive into the copy of The Enquirer. Sure enough, there was a photograph from a mixer at last year's conference. They were standing close to each other, but in completely different conversations. There was another image of them waiting outside an elevator. Margo just sat, shock leaving her rigid and gripping the pages so hard they almost ripped. This was ridiculous. Insane. She wasn't having an affair with Sergei Nikulov. The first time she'd met the man, she'd wanted to throttle him.

"It's garbage."

"It's on the front page of every paper tomorrow morning and playing on the late night news tonight."

Margo thrust the paper back in his direction. "I had a drink, in private, with a colleague to discuss Apollo-Soyuz. I then spent the night—" Tom's mouth dropped open. "—with him here, at JSC. With Aleida Rosales, no less. There is no affair. Sergei is married or did The Enquirer not clock that wedding ring."

"Sources in Moscow report that Nikulov, pictured here with Margo Madison at the '82 IAC conference, is enjoying a trial separation from his wife that began shortly after these photographs were taken. It's clear that Nikulov, head of the Soyuz program at Star City, became smitten with the NASA Director last year." Tom threw the rag onto his desk. "This is a problem, Margo."

Her jaw clenched. "I'm not going to lose my job because some asshole took some photographs out of context. Right?" She swallowed. "Tom, I swear. There is nothing going on with Sergei Nikulov."

Tom shook his head. "Well, then it needs to. I just got off with the phone with the President. He just got off the phone with Moscow. You two falling in love with each other, reunited for Apollo-Soyuz – it's playing very well. It's brought Moscow back to the table. Might even stop us from arming Pathfinder."

"We're not in love, Tom."

The door to his office opened. His assistant walked in; her time was up. "You'll make it work. it's what you do."

Oh, Goddammit.

Shortly after the Soviet Union shot down KAL 007, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, operating the commercial airports around New York City, denied Soviet aircraft landing rights, in violation of the United Nations Charter that required the host nation to allow all member countries access to the UN. In reaction, TASS and some at the UN raised the question of whether the UN should move its headquarters from the United States. Charles Lichenstein, acting U.S. permanent representative to the UN under Ambassador Kirkpatrick, responded, "We will put no impediment in your way. The members of the U.S. mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset." Administration officials were quick to announce that Lichenstein was speaking only for himself.

Катастрофа Boeing 747 над Сахалином — крупная авиационная катастрофа, произошедшая в ночь на четверг 1 сентября 1983 года и ставшая 15-ой из крупнейших в мире. Авиалайнер Boeing 747-230B авиакомпании Korean Air Lines (KAL) выполнял плановый межконтинентальный рейс KE007 (позывной — KAL 007) по маршруту Нью-Йорк — Анкоридж — Сеул; его полёт до Сеула должен был проходить над нейтральными водами Тихого океана, но самолёт по неустановленной причине отклонился вправо от назначенного курса. Спустя некоторое время лайнер настолько отклонился на запад, что вошёл в закрытое воздушное пространство СССР, после чего пролетел над Камчаткой (пройдя ряд военных объектов) и затем над островом Сахалин, где был перехвачен, а затем сбит истребителем Су-15ТМ ВВС СССР, после чего рухнул в пролив Лаперуза в 37 километрах к юго-западу от Сахалина. Погибли все находившиеся на его борту 269 человек — 246 пассажиров и 23 члена экипажа. На момент катастрофы самолёт отклонился от курса более чем на 500 километров. Согласно расследованию, проведённому Международной организацией гражданской авиации (ICAO), наиболее вероятной причиной отклонения рейса 007 от маршрута полёта было то, что пилоты неправильно настроили автопилот и не выполняли надлежащих проверок для уточнения текущих координат. Когда стало известно, что самолёт был сбит, было определено примерное место его падения и организованы поиски обломков. В них принимали участие советские, американские и японские корабли. Но из-за крайне обострившихся отношений между странами поиски не были скоординированными. Через 2 месяца после катастрофы обломки самолёта были найдены советскими водолазами. Были подняты все приборы, включая бортовые самописцы, однако мировой общественности ничего из поднятого не было доступно вплоть до обнародования результатов расследования второй комиссии ИКАО в 1993 году Официальная позиция, представленная начальником Генерального штаба Вооружённых сил СССР, маршалом Советского Союза Николаем Огарковым на пресс-конференции 9 сентября, заключалась в том, что нарушение границы было умышленным и представляло собой спланированную разведывательную акцию, целью которой являлось изучение советской системы ПВО в этом районе. В своих мемуарах командующий войсками противоракетной и противокосмической обороны в 1986—1991 годах Вольтер Красковский сохранил часть статьи о советской системе контроля космического пространства: …Советская сторона предъявила свидетельства того, что вторжение в наше воздушное пространство было преднамеренным. И, пожалуй, самыми убедительными были те, что предоставили отсюда — из центра слежения космического пространства. Полёт «Боинга-747» был строго синхронизирован с полётом разведспутника «Ferret-D». Космический шпион появился над Чукоткой в ночь на 1 сентября, в 18 часов 45 минут, и в течение примерно 12 минут летел восточнее Камчатки и Курильских островов, прослушивая советские радиоэлектронные средства, работающие в обычном режиме. На следующем витке «Феррет-Д» появился над Камчаткой как раз в момент вторжения самолёта-нарушителя, фиксируя деятельность наших радиотехнических средств, изменивших режимы работы. Наконец, было установлено, что третий виток с абсолютной точностью совпал с последующим, третьим этапом полёта «Боинга-747» над Сахалином. Предоставленные общественности данные показали: не объяснишь случайностью такое точное совпадение полёта самолёта-разведчика и спутника-шпиона. (Докучаев А. Уздечка для ядерных «скакунов». СККП («Красная звезда», 10 октября 1990 года)) В декабре 1990 года во время визита Президента Республики Корея Ро Дэ У в Москву, Президент СССР Михаил Горбачёв принёс официальные извинения корейской стороне за катастрофу рейса 007. Президент США Рональд Рейган, узнав о гибели южнокорейского лайнера, назвал инцидент «преступлением против человечества, которое никогда не должно быть забыто». Причем у Вашингтона был свой счет к действиям советской ПВО, поскольку в катастрофе погиб американский конгрессмен Ларри Макдональд — темпераментный антикоммунист и очень перспективных политик. Однако по неизвестным причинам обида была забыта американской стороной очень быстро. Джордж Шульц, госсекретарь США, в начале с большим энтузиазмом взялся за дело: группа лучших следователей управления безопасности на транспорте была командирована на Аляску вести расследование трагедии. Фильм повествует о деталях и подробностях события, произошедшего 1 сентября 1983 года в небе над Сахалином, когда при пролете над территорией СССР был сбит южнокорейский «Боинг-747» рейс KAL 007. На борту находилось 269 пассажиров. Это была мировая трагедия, однако тел погибших так и не нашли, к тому же, выяснилось ещё очень много интересного. Многие считают ту аварию инсценировкой и провокацией. «История с «Боингом-747» как никогда актуальна, - рассказал автор и продюсер проекта Владимир Чуйко. - Ведь то, что случилось в 1983 году, до сих пор находит отклик в событиях настоящего времени». В 2008 году в России так же вышла книга Мишеля Брюна, "Сахалинский инцидент". Послужившая основой для этого фильма. В России книга была издана как "Третья мировая над Сахалином, или Кто сбил корейский лайнер?" Премьера фильма состоялась 31 августа 2008г.

This was going to be one very, very long night with your own, ever so naughty..
