Other Dushkin instruments?

No, this is not a post nerding about recorders again, haha, though it is slightly adjacent. Last February (2024), woodwind player Brian Blauch (reedplayerncnc) who I had mentioned in some of my previous posts, had posted on his blog about a mysterious keyed Dushkin alto that came into his possession. It piqued my interest since I've never seen anything like that before in my research into Dushkin recorders in general.

While looking into this mystery, I ended up coming across information pointing to David Dushkin being capable of manufacturing other instruments, as well as teaching students how to manufacture their own.

... David’s shop, where he designed and manufactured musical instruments, first in collaboration with the Wurlitzer Company (31 December 1934, DDSD), but then independently, particularly high-quality recorders. In the basement workshop, the Dushkins’ students and their own children visited, studied, and learned how to make a variety of musical instruments: not only recorders, but dulcimers, marimbas, and xylophones as well (Polikoff 2006, 7).

Which leads to my next point. As one might guess from my online moniker, I play the piano. David Dushkin's wife, Dorothy, wrote an article ("Making Musical Instruments in School Shops"; published in Industrial Education Magazine, Volume 40 in 1938 by Manual Arts Press or Manual Training Magazine, Volume 40, published in 1938 by University of Chicago Press), which gave a non-exhaustive list of example instruments that David and his students worked on. There are two keyboard-like inventions on this list that stuck out for me:

11. Clarison - Invention combining reed wind instrument with keyboard facility of playing. Range from one octave below middle C to two octaves above. Tone resembling clarinet and French horn, according to register and breath pressure used. Is capable of very great variation in nuance and phrasing. Beautiful tone for solo and ensemble. (Undergoing revision.)

My guess is that "clarison" is a mix of "clarion" and something else. For me, the description read like something similar to a melodica at first, but my guess is that this is something different entirely if register and breath pressure is involved.

12. Clavalum - keyboard invention resembling celesta, adding great flexibility of action, dynamic variation and damper pedal. Five octaves. Liquid, clear tone, admirable to develop clean touch. Excellent for children, as well as an opportunity for adults to get a refreshing lightness of tone in classic compositions. Sounds extremely well with piano and orchestra instruments.

A clavalum is a lot more easier to imagine, but I wonder what makes it different than a celesta. Based on the name, I would assume it might be a mix of a "clavichord" and something else.

If information about Dushkin recorder manufacturing wasn't obscure enough, information about Dushkin keyboard instruments and non-woodwinds are even more obscure - though I suspect many of them were probably sold under the Wurlitzer name than David's own. It would be interesting if I ever come across a Wurlitzer instrument made at or around the 1934s, that would be the most likely period Dushkin would have made them.

13 Days of  Muffy: Autumn/Halloween Edition

Day Nine:   Muffy meets at Oktoberfest

Fandom: Andi Mack

Characters: Buffy Driscoll x Marty from the Party

Summary:  Buffy and her friends take a break from the drama, relationships and school problems for an international trip to Munich, Germany.  Where she meets a very handsome boy at Oktoberfest.

Buffy Driscoll could not help but be in awe of her surroundings. Here she was standing in the crowd with people from all over the nation, arriving to celebrate in Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest. To the left of her roads were closed, people were cheering and laughing. To the right, she could see a Ferris wheel, that she made a mental note to ride later.

"Come on, Driscoll," says an excitedly Iris Waldorf, as she reaches for her hands and pulls her in with a huge hug.

"THIS IS SO COOL!"

Iris's excitement brought Buffy into giggles as she wraps her arm around her sorority sister.

"What no historical facts to share?"

For the past couple of months, Buffy and her friends were under extra stress due to finals, breakups, and unnecessary drama. So when Buffy pulled a quick meeting with her sorority sisters for an international trip to visit her Grandpa Henry in Munich, Germany, for the tail end of Oktoberfest, it was met with cheers.

Kaitlin called her parents for access to the private plane. Buffy called her childhood friend Andi, to join them. Iris started researching everything about Oktoberfest. Natalie and Kira shared the German lingo, including some dirty words.

"Just remember that locals don't call this "Oktoberfest." We need to use the word "Wiesn" instead." Iris continues to share random facts with Buffy as they maneuver through the seeds of drunken pedestrians to meet the rest of the group at the Hacker Pschorr tent.

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees a tall blonde guy, his blue checked trachtem shirt, which was rolled up, showing part of his tattoo. They were keeping the same pace as him and his friends, and Buffy couldn't help but stare at the handsome stranger.

 "Call us Houston, we have a problem," informs Andi to the girls.

Before Buffy could get a response, a loud whistle sound approaches behind her, and an unexpected push. She prepares to fall, instead, her body is pulled up and away from the crowd. 

Buffy turns to the blonde boy from earlier who has helped prevented an embarrassment fall that would love on social media.

"Sorry... Um, I mean Es tut uns leid," responses Buffy.

"Buffy, you cannot stand in the walkways. It's for the services staff; that's why they whistle at you," informs Iris.

"Thank you, Iris."

"Guys, we cannot find a table for all of us," groans Kaitlin as she joins her friends.

"That's the problem I was about to share with you two." "You can sit with us," response the blonde boy.

"You speak English?" Buffy asks.

With a soft smile, he moves his hands off her waist. "They're right over here."

He takes her hand, and Buffy can feel herself feeling flustered. Turning to her friends, "HOT!" she mouths as she follows him to the table with a group of guys.

"That's what I'm talking about MVP! He finds five of the most beautiful and single ladies, my brown eyes can see," smiles a handsome Chinese boy.

"What makes you think we're single," questions Natalie as she sits next to him.

"Your dirndl.."

A voluptuous redhead barmaid interjects their conversation. "For my favorite American boys, I think these will hold you boys down for a while." She places the drinks and leaves. "Thanks, Hannah." A tall redhead guy grabs a drink. "Not sure if introductions have not begun, but I'm Gus, this is Leo." He points to the Chinese boy. "This is Reed, and the guy who hasn't let stop holding your friend's hand is Marty."

Buffy and Marty look down at their intertwined hands and drop them. 

Natalie raised her eyebrows at her friend Buffy.

"I'm Natalie, the girl with the red cheeks is Buffy. The girl stuffing her face with pretzels is Kaitlin. The two that have started drinking are Andi and Kira, and this little one dancing is Iris."

Natalie pulls Iris back to the table and smiles at the tipsy girl.

Buffy and Marty smile at each other. Their friends start to talk and drink amongst each other as if they were old friends.

"Marty?"

"Buffy?"

"You're friend Leo, mention our dirndls but didn't finish."

When his hand moved towards her torso to touch the ribbon waved through, Buffy breath hitched. "The way the ribbon is position on your dirndl shows your relationship status." His long fingers played with the bottom of her gold ribbon.  "Placing the bow is on the right, she's taken. In the middle, she's too young. In the back, she's widowed." His brown eyes staring hopefully into hers. "Your bow is on the left. Which means your suppose to be single."

"Oh."

"Oh?"

She laughed and ran her fingers through her hair.

"No, it's just .. I'm here for a couple of days, and I'm not looking for a fuckboi."

"Wow."

"Stop." She shakes her head. "I didn't mean... I'm making this look bad."

"Standing here… "He looks her up and down. "I don't believe you could make anything look bad."

"Alright, everyone, we need to drink," interrupts Andi as she wraps her arm around a tipsy Kira.

The young adults cheered as they grab their drinks.

"Now remember boys and girls-. " Reed stops talking to make sure he had everyone's attention. " you must have eye contact as you clink your glasses-"

"Or you'll be cursed with bad sex for seven years," groans Iris as she pouts.

"On the count of drei, peeps," shouts Gus.

"EINS, ZWEI, DREI… PROST."

Marty makes eye contact with Buffy as they drink and cheer with their friends.

Hours had passed, and the group had left the tents and started to explore the extensive grounds. Marty and Buffy ended up walking alone together from the group and now standing in front of the Ferris Wheel waiting for their turns.

"About earlier. -I want to apologize."

"For calling me a fuckboi?"

"Yes, and. -"

He escorts Buffy into the seat and places his arm around the back of the chair. The ride starts to move, and she turns her body into his.

"It was wrong for me to assume."

"You did assume?"

"Why do I feel like you're laughing at me?"

"I'm not Buffy." His fingers gently touch her shoulder, and the ride stops at the top. In a softer tone. "I'm very sorry for making you feel that."

"I - well, the thing is - this trip is to recover from breakups, exams, and unnecessary drama."

Marty nods, "Fuckboi should not apply."

She playfully pushes her shoulder into his. "No, they shouldn't."

"Then who should apply?"

"Um-okay, well, I don't do long-distance relationships."

Marty grins and pulls her closer. "What about now?" "What am I going to do with you?"

His fingers stroked her cheek and tilted his head down towards her.

"Anything you want to."

Buffy smiles and moves closer to Marty. "Were on a Ferris wheel, so what about a kiss?"

"Kissing would be nice." Her lips ghostly touching his. "But that would make me a fuckboi." He pulls back with a smirk. "We have already established that I'm not a fuckboi."

Buffy met his smirk with a giggle. "Okay, then if you're not a fuckboi, then what are you?" "Maybe the reason why your ribbon is turned to the right?"

If the Andi Mack characters were to experience the plot of the Society (I.e. shady side empty with no parents), how would that go like who would lead, what would happen, etc

(So obviously Bex, Bowie, Cece and Metcalf are out of the picture.)

Andi would lead. Why? Because she's the thinker and all of them look towards Andi when it comes to the grand ideas. And you can bet that Buffy and Cyrus would be her 'Will' because without Buffy's determination and Cyrus' sage advice, how would Andi lead?

Cyrus would also be the researcher (Cyrus gives me a mix of Gordie and Sam). His partner in crime (in researching I mean): Walker and Libby. Walker and Libby are creative on their feet and look beyond just the paper when it comes to problems. They would be the equivalent of Bean and Becca.

The nice and loyal and supportive (and not like the d-bags who are actually in the guard by the end of The Society) version of the guard would include TJ, Marty and Jonah (dumbasses just like Grizz, Clark and Luke). TJ is totally Grizz: more than just a jock and it fits with my hc that TJ loves history and old timey novels and also that he's well versed with the environment.

Also, Jonah is really good with a bat and fits right into the guard.

Kira would be Lexie OBVIOUSLY: mean, misunderstood and a mess.

Amber would be Elle: nice but would poison your pie if you messed with her.

Iris would be Kelly: nice and organized and into keeping and regulating the rules.

The Helena of Shadyside? Kaitlin (goes with my hc that's she catholic AF).

Campbell/Harry = Reed with the weed/gun and probably popular before the whole fiasco of disappearing parents.

Buffy meets Marty when she decides to join the guard to better protect Andi and they really start flirting bantering.

Cyrus stumbles upon TJ reading about forest shrubs at the library during his research about solar eclipses. They get to talking and forget about the time. By the time they're done, they're in love and its 1:00 in the morning (WAY past curfew).

Short dance

Skoptcova/Aleshin(RUS)

Thoughts: At least Stasha tried to fix her half of the choreography. Kirill is starting to wander into Pylin territory, yikes. Also, Stasha lost a disturbing amount of weight. No wonder she got out there when she did.

Reed/Ambrulevicius(LTU)

Thoughts: I couldn’t tell Alison’s sleeves were purple during the warmups. Now I see it. They look so good. Saulius what was that attempt at a dominator smirk? I know we were trying to be more than a sparkly accessory but this is not the way to do it.

Hawayek/Baker(USA)

Thoughts: One Of Kaitlin’s better dresses. Jean has gorgeous arms. Choreography needed help.

Hurtado/Khaliavin(ESP)

Thoughts: a couple pretty smiles from Sara. Kirill, please remove that vest from my sight. Kirill does have gorgeous hands though.

Beaudry/Soerensen(CAN)

Thoughts: It took me a minute to figure out what I didn’t like about Laurence’s dress. I think it’s the V. It’s not the color. The color is fabulous. And her extra long ponytail. She’s quite the stunner.

Guignard/Fabbri(ITA)

Thoughts: loved the back of Charlene’s dress. The straightline lift was a definite highlight.

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2017 - Figure Skating Edition: Senior Ice Dance

Ice Dance is definitely the discipline that I got into the last and that I know the least about.  I’m not super into a lot of the overplayed “romance” type programs that are common, so I find myself shrugging at a lot of Ice Dance, but over time, I’ve come to appreciate the discipline a lot more for its beautiful skating and detailed choreographies.  There are still a lot of really talented Ice Dancers that just aren’t really my style though, so if my list seems a little off beat, that would be why.  (One of the biggest differentiating factors of whether or not I can appreciate the skating in an overtly romantic/sexual tension program is whether or not it comes off as forced or pushy to me (where not wins out every time).)

Some shout outs to awesome teams that didn’t quite make my list:

Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron (FRA) may not be entirely my style, but I sure can appreciate the quality of their skating.  Huge congrats to them for breaking 200 points! I really enjoy how well matched their lines are and that they always look like they’re having fun.  As a side note, they’re  part of my ideal Olympic podium, which I’ll probably make a post about at some point. (SD at the GPF)

Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje (CAN) are one of the teams who actually got me into ice dance with their Four Seasons program a few seasons back, so they if nothing else deserve a sentimental shout out.  (FD at Skate Canada)

5. Kaitlin Hawayek/Jean-Luc Baker (USA)

Both Kaitlin and Jean-Luc’s FD (above) and SD are wonderful, and they’re good at both classical styles and latin styles, which is rare.  They’re very musical, and they’re very well balanced.  They’ve got the basics down to perfection, and they just balance each other out so so well.

On top of all that, they are super fun.  They clearly always enjoy what they’re out there doing, and they don’t take themselves too seriously, but they take themselves exactly seriously enough to make the audience take them seriously.  It’s a great balance.

And finally, I really enjoy that they’re basically the same size (she can in fact lift him, and they’ve had reverse lifts in some of their programs).

4. Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte (ITA)

Cappellini and Lanotte are such beautiful storytellers on ice.  They manage elegant, character driven pieces in their skates like nobody else in the field.  Their FD (above) is an excellent example of that.  I’m not as captivated by their SD this season, but it’s got its moments of beauty as well (and Anna seems to really enjoy it).

It was good to see them getting to the GPF this year with two good sets of skates on the GP circuit.  Look forward to them being in the upper rankings at the Olympics, but they’re going to have to skate the lights out for themselves to have a look at that podium.

3. Kana Muramoto/Chris Reed (JPN)

Kana and Chris have finally made the breakthrough into being internationally competitive that Chris and his sister, Cathy, sat on the brink of for a long time.  While they aren’t technically up with the top of the top, they skate beautiful, expressive programs that never fail to draw me in, and they’re skating a break through for Asian countries being involved in ice dance as well (along with another team we’ll get to shortly).

I love their FD (above), and their SD shows off their expressiveness as well, but isn’t as much my thing.  Watch out for them at the Olympics gunning for the spot of top Asian team and seeing how high up they can get.  They earned the spot for team Japan at Nebelhorn earlier this season, and they just keep getting better as they get more solid in their partnership.

2. Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani (USA)

The ShibSibs are incredible.  I love that they are a sibling team that skates like they are siblings.  There’s an incredible connection, and they make beautiful stories in their programs.  They’re some of the best skaters in the world, and of my favorite teams, they’re the only ice dance team I love with a real chance at the Olympic podium.  Their SD is every bit as good as their FD (above), but I like their FD better stylistically.

They have the best twizzles, and such beautiful beautiful lifts and edges and skills from the basics on up.  They’ve got a good thing going with their programs over the past few seasons.  Here’s to hoping for a good finish to the season for them!

1. Wang Shiyue/Liu Xinyu (CHN)

Shiyue and Xinyu broke into the internationally competitive range at World Team Trophy a few years back (when team China shocked me by not coming in dead last in the Ice Dance segment), and I’ve been following them closely every since.  They’re fun, elegant, and artistically creative, and they just keep on getting better.  They’re only 23, which means in Ice Dance ages, they’ve got ages to go left in their career if they want to.  Their SD (above) is more fun this season, but their FS is just as good and features some amazing lifts and one of my favorite musical transitions of the season.

They go into the Olympics debatably the best Asian Ice Dance team (depends on what factors you look at whether it is them or Muramoto/Reed).  I love how they match up to each other, and the fact that they have such great synchronicity and matching lines despite the height difference (he’s ridiculously tall, she’s not actually that short).  The coolest thing about their skating is their incredibly creative and acrobatic lifts (if you watch the FD for no other reason, watch it for the lift where he pulls her over his shoulder by one foot into a lift, I don’t have the words to convey how awesome that lift is).  I’m just also super excited to see countries that aren’t the usual ones breaking in in Ice Dance, which often seems to be the discipline with the biggest barrier to entry.

I am so proud of them for earning their Olympic slot at Worlds last year, and I hope that they have the skate of their lives at their first Olympics!
