Chapter 24

More than anything, I was angry with myself. Everyone had told me, time and time again, about the person Olivia really was, but I wouldn’t listen.

I say this a lot about romantic relationships, but I think that it can apply to a platonic friendship just as much.

But if somebody outside of your relationship says something akin to “haha, wow. That Olivia sure is a piece of work. Why are you friends with her?” Maybe you should ask them why they'd say something like that.

We tend to wear rose-colored glasses when we're in relationships. And yes, even friendships, sometimes. And while we should sometimes take things like that with a grain of salt, you should always try to think of where their words are coming from.

Especially in a situation like the Olivia and McKenzie relationship. At first, it was just Jared. And then Drew. And then Gavin. And then Kat. And then Andie. Literally everybody who saw the two of them together told McKenzie to get away from Olivia. Like not just one person, but multiple people.

So yes. She should feel bad for not listening after so many people told her to get away.

“What do you think about me starting my own firm?”

Get in, bitches. We're cutting toxic people from our lives and living our best lives away from them.

I could see the light at the end of the long, dark tunnel I had been prisoner of, and the source of the light was Drew. I was home.

Chapter 24 summary: McKenzie wakes up the next morning and rehashes everything that happened the day before. She feels so angry at herself that she'd been duped by Olivia, despite multiple people telling her to stay away from the toxic shitshow.

Drew comes in, and hands her phone. It's Jared, who says that he and Andie are coming down to be there for the two of them during this difficult time. McKenzie protests, since Jared will have to come back eventually because of his own work. But Jared says that McKenzie is his friend, and that's what friends do.

Drew then asks McKenzie if she thinks he should start his own law firm. That working under his father, it's only about money, and never about cases like Nate's. McKenzie thinks that this is a good idea, and encourages him to do it.

They then bang.

Chapter 25

Court proceedings worked in Nate’s favor regarding his case against Olivia. The judge granted him custody after the baby was born. They named her Maya, and I had to admit I’d been wrong about him. He stepped up to the plate, caring for his daughter like a good father should. Olivia ended up moving to Chicago to be closer to them, having been granted visitation rights with the child. What I never expected was for those two to make amends. Just over a week ago, Nate phoned me with the news that he and Olivia were seeing one another. Talk about nearly giving a man a heart attack. I had to bite my tongue to keep from giving him a piece of my mind.

I know that the narration would never dive this deep into the topic, especially not in the second to last chapter. But I like to imagine that a huge part of Olivia even getting visitation is her undergoing some serious therapy.

That, in itself, is a happy ending, and I was proud to say, we lived happily ever after.

Chapter 25 summary: Time passes. Drew opens up his law firm. Nate ends up with full custody of his daughter, and Olivia moves to Chicago for her visitations with the kid.

Drew proposes to McKenzie. McKenzie is pregnant. I saw both of that coming, and at this point, I'm just eager to put this series behind me.

Epilogue

Two year ago, Kat finally had enough of Jonathan and his overbearing ways. With the help of her three children, she left him. In the weeks following, she filed for divorce, hiring Peltier/Wise to handle her negotiations. That infuriated Jonathan more than the divorce, but the proceedings didn’t last long. During one of their meetings, Jonathan suffered a stroke. It left him in a coma, and weeks later he passed away, having never reawakened.

The comeuppance story that I didn't know I needed!

Through it all, we found what we were seeking, and if I had it to do all over again, I could honestly say I wouldn’t change a thing.

The End.

Epilogue summary: Four years later. Because I really care about this. Drew and McKenzie had twins, Connor and Chloe. She's pregnant with the third one, and in active labor. Kat finally worked up the courage to divorce Jonathan, but then he died in the middle of that.

And uh... yeah. That's about it as far as plot goes. “The end” indeed!

Chapter 12

“To Gavin and Morgan. May their lives together be filled with much joy and happiness,” she crooned.

Everyone cheered around us. The sound of glass clinked together filled the room. I lifted my glass, turning to meet McKenzie’s, when my father pushed his glass between our faces, making contact with mine. “And to Andrew and Olivia,” he orated, “for the promise of a bright future together in continuing the Wise legacy.”

Holy shit. Is this guy for real? At Gavin's rehearsal dinner? How fucking tacky can you possibly get?

I shook him off of me. “Just consider me yet another one gone,” I retorted and walked out in search of McKenzie, pretty sure that was where I’d find Jared, too.

Chapter 12 summary: So Andie has shown up. However, she goes around and talks like she's 12, and everybody else acts the same way. The only good thing is that Andie knows the truth about Olivia's scheming, and isn't taking any shit from her.

Mercifully, Jonathan and Kat show up to put an end to this unproductive nonsense. They pass out glasses so that they can make a toast. However, Jonathan interrupts the toast about Gavin and Morgan, THE COUPLE ABOUT TO GET MARRIED, and just talks about the Drew/Olivia situation. It's so goddamned cringe inducing, and I can't stand it.

After the toast, McKenzie leaves quickly, and Jonathan scoffs over how “sensitive” that she is. Drew calls his father out on his shit, but Jonathan knows exactly what kind of buttons to press. He calls McKenzie a distraction. Jared leaves to go be with McKenzie. But when Drew tries to leave, his father calls him out. Drew ignores him and just leaves, too.

Chapter 13

“Jared, don’t you get it? That man’s never gonna accept me.”

“And why does his acceptance matter?”

“Because I refuse to come between them.”

“Refuse to come between them”? Sweetie, the thing standing between Drew having a good relationship with Jonathan is Jonathan.

He fucked that relationship up years before you were around.

None of this is your fault.

“I was just thinking I knew someone like him. Then it hit me, Jonathan is Olivia with a dick.”

No wonder the two of them get along so well: they're cut from the same cloth.

Both narcissists who are obsessed with status and power. They don't care who they stomp on in order to get even higher.

“You’re not seriously suggesting she got pregnant on purpose?”

He pursed his lips and shrugged. “I wouldn’t put anything past her.” He dropped his leg, leaning forward. “Think about it. It’s really kind of perfect. She knew you and Drew were getting closer by the day. Hell, anyone with a pair of eyes could see how hard he was falling for you,” he stated with a sour note to his tone. “And we all know you’re loyal to a fault. By getting herself knocked up, she’d secure her place in Drew’s life and remove her competition in the process.”

“That’s ridiculous. She’d never do such a thing.”

Oh my sweet, summer child.

“That’s your family inside that house, Andy. They only want the best for you.”

Kat, Gavin, and Andie want the best for Drew.

Jonathan wants what's best for Jonathan.

We left that house with all the horrors it held for us that night and returned to his condo, where we spent the evening reminding each other how much we truly loved one another.

Chapter 13 summary: McKenzie runs from the party and makes it outside before she starts crying. She thought that things had been going so well yesterday, that she clearly forgot all about Jonathan and Olivia.

Jared finds her, and the two of them go over to where the ceremony is going to take place later. As they talk about the situation, Jared stumbles upon an idea that Olivia intentionally got herself pregnant when Drew was drunk so that he would be forced to be around her. He refuses to let go of the idea... although truthfully, it makes too much sense. It can't be proven, and even if it could be, there's nothing to be done about it anyway.

Drew shows up, and Jared leaves. Drew asks McKenzie to come back to his apartment to spend the night, and tells her not to think about it too hard. So she agrees, and they leave.

🎃What would their Halloween outfit be? god. probably a really detailed and ostentatious cosplay of sth that varies year to year, we're talking heidi klum levels of effort. why not show off your tailoring skills? mortum's supposed to host a halloween extravaganza for the villains so i bet sura would coordinate with her (fingers crossed their friendship can be fully repaired in revelations, given sura's come clean abt the puppet + regene thing).

sidestep days i think sura Has come as edna mode b/c it was funny (+ themmy bugged them to). yea themmy and sura definitely used to coordinate halloween outfits.

🧿Do they have a superstition or belief? Such as "black cats bring bad luck", belief in ghosts, tarot, crystals, meditation, etc.

nope! kat's very unsuperstitious. she's the inverse of sura that way. things happen and that's that :P

🍿Favorite show/movie? probably really cheesy stuff thats easy to make fun of with friends (i think shes more into the social aspect than the show or film itself). there's a lot of bootleg ranger movies she's watched through with julia and themmy just for that purpose, so maybe if he gets along with argent they'll have a lot of movie date nights :3
