Injured HS Prannoy Withdraws From Denmark And French Open
After battling severe back pain to win India’s first men’s singles medal in 41 years in Hangzhou, HS Prannoy will now need to miss two to three weeks of competition.
Tumblr media
Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy withdrew from the Denmark Open Super 750 competition due to a back problem that bothered him during his historic run of earning bronze at the just finished Asian Games. After overcoming severe back pain to win India’s first men’s singles medal in 41 years in Hangzhou, the 31-year-old Indian will now need to miss two to three weeks of competition. This month, we have no plans to participate in any tournaments. I will be out for two to three weeks due to something that also surfaced in the MRI, which means I won’t be able to play Denmark and France,” Prannoy told sources.
“I will need to rest and then start with rehab.” In his absence, India’s charge will be led by Lakshya Sen, who returns to the court after helping India win its first-ever silver medal in the men’s team event at the Asian Games.
Sen, who went undefeated at the Asian Games, will face Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen in the first round before facing China’s sixth seed Shi Yuqi in the second round.
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, will also be looking for a solid performance following a semifinal finish at the Arctic Open last week. Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland will be her opponent.

In his first game, World No. 20 Kidambi Srikanth will face China’s Weng Hong Yang, who is also frantically trying to amass ranking points in order to make the cut for the Paris Olympics.
It will be a difficult match for the former world number one, who has been inconsistent all season.
Priyanshu Rajawat, ranked 30th in the world, will also have his work cut out for him as he meets world No. 14 Lee Zii Jia, who is riding high after winning the Arctic Open.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the newly crowned world No. 1 pair who won an incredible gold in Hangzhou, will compete against Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi.
Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun will also be absent after the former suffered a back injury in Hangzhou.
The women’s team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, on the other hand, will return to the court after the Asian Games to face Thailand’s Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard.

South Korea men's badminton loses to India in five-hour thriller
After a surprise upset, the South Korean men's badminton team won bronze in the team event at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
South Korea lost a hard-fought men's team quarterfinal match to India on Tuesday at Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, with a game score of 2-3.
With the win, Korea clinched the bronze medal. After defeating strong teams such as Malaysia and Indonesia in the quarterfinals and semifinals, South Korea exceeded expectations by reaching the medal round. The men's team was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games.
The team competition is played in the following order: singles-doubles-singles-doubles-singles. South Korea's match against India lasted more than five hours. In the first match, world No. 47 Jeon Hyuk-jin (Yonex) fought hard against world No. 7 H.S. Prannoy, but lost the set 1-2 (21-18 16-21 19-21).
However, in the second doubles match, Seo Seung-jae and Kang Min-hyuk (Samsung Life Insurance - World No. 4) leveled the match with a 2-0 (21-13 26-24) victory over World No. 3 Satwikseraj Lankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
In the third singles match, Lee Yoon Kyu (KIM Cheoncheong) was defeated by Lakshya Sen with a set score of 0-2 (7-21 9-21). However, in the fourth doubles match, Kim Won-ho (Samsung Life) and Na Sung-seung (Gimcheon City Hall) defeated 안전놀이터 M.R. Arjun and D.R. Kapila 2-0 (21-16 21-11) to take the match to the fifth and final game.
In the fifth game, world No. 163 KIM Sang-yup (Seongnam City Hall) put up an even fight against world No. 21 Kidambi Srikanth. He won the first set to raise his hopes of victory, but dropped the second and third sets to finish the match in disappointment.

Australia Open: Sindhu knocked out in quarterfinals
Sindhu, who has slipped to world number 17th following a series of early exits, was looking to make her fourth semifinal of the season but found it tough to tame USA's Beiwen Zhang.
Tumblr media
SYDNEY: Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu bowed out of the Australia Open after going down in straight games to USA’s world number 12 Beiwen Zhang in the women’s singles quarterfinals here on Friday.
Sindhu, who has slipped to world number 17th following a series of early exits, was looking to make her fourth semifinal of the season but found it tough to tame Zhang, losing 12–21 17–21 in 39 minutes in the USD 420,000 super 500 tournament.
In 10 past meetings, Sindhu had won six times against her opponent but she just couldn’t get going on Friday against the 33-year-old Chinese-born American Zhang, who showed better control to come up trumps.
Sindhu had beaten compatriots Ashmita Chaliha and Aakarshi Kashyap in the first two rounds but her loss to Zhang would come as a big disappointment as she heads to the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark to be held from August 21 to 27.
The 2019 world champion, Sindhu has been going through a lean patch since her recovery from an injury, and has repeatedly made early exits in as many as seven of the 12 BWF World Tour events this year.
Early this year, Sindhu had parted ways with Korea’s Park Tae-Sang and then briefly worked with SAI coach Vidhi Chaudhary. She is currently training under new coach Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, the 2003 All England champion.
Among other Indians in fray, HS Prannoy will face top seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia, while 2021 world championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth will take on compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat later in the day.

[ad_1] SYDNEY: Star Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth will look to arrest their slump in form when they begin their campaign at the Australia Open badminton tournament here on Tuesday. The USD 420,000 event, which has been upgraded to a Super 500 tournament, will be the last chance for Sindhu and Srikanth to regain their touch ahead of the World Championships to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 2019 world champion, Sindhu hasn't looked the part since her recovery from an injury as she has repeatedly made early exits in as many as seven of the 12 BWF World Tour events this year.A lot has happened this year for Sindhu as she parted ways with Korea's Park Tae-Sang, worked with SAI coach Vidhi Chaudhary before zeroing on new coach Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, the 2003 All-England champion. With back-to-back tournaments lined up, there is hardly any time but the two-time Olympic medallist will still hope to find her best self with the help of Hashim and try out some of her tricks when she takes on compatriot Ashmita Chaliha in the opening round here. The only time the two faced off in international circuit was at the 2022 India Open and Sindhu had come up trumps but they had also played at the 2019 Senior Nationals Championships in Guwahati and though Ashmita had lost then too, she had given a scare to the star Indian.Srikanth too has not been able to weave a series of wins in a week. He showed glimpses of his hay days when he thrashed Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen with his trademark attacking game at Japan Open before losing to fellow Indian HS Prannoy. The former world number one will have to curb his errors when he takes the court against Japan's Kenta Nishimoto. For India, Prannoy, Lakshya Sen and the world number 2 pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been the most consistent performers this season. With four titles, Satwik and Chirag have been the talk of the town but the duo has decided to skip the event to prepare for the World Championships (August 21 to 27).Prannoy and Sen, on the other hand, have been the only other Indians to win titles this season and they have also been consistent, especially the former. At world number 10, Prannoy is currently the best placed Indian singles player and has made three quarterfinals, besides claiming the Malaysia Masters super 500 title. He had almost knocked out the world number one Viktor Axelsen in the semifinals in Japan before narrowly falling short in the decider. Same goes for Sen, who gave Indonesia's world number 9 Jonatan Christie a run for his money last week. This week, Prannoy is pitted against Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu, while Sen, who had won the Canada Open, will have to tame China's Lu Guang Zu in their opening rounds.Young Priyanshu Rajawat too has been impressive despite his losses as he gave a scare to his opponents -- Indonesia's world number 2 Anthony Ginting, Japan's Kodai Naraoka and Sen in the last few tournaments since winning the Orleans Masters early this year. The 21-year-old will begin his campaign against local player Nathan Tang. Also in the fray is national champion Mithun Manjunath who will take on fourth seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in his opening round.Among others, Aakarshi Kashyap will meet Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia, while Tasnim Mir faces Indonesia's Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi and Malvika Bansod crosses swords with Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei.Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela too will hope to go deep into the women's doubles draw, especially since they have not crossed the second round in any tournament apart from the semifinal finish at the All England Championships.Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy are in the fray in mixed doubles. !(function(f, b, e, v, n, t, s) )( window, document, 'script', ); [ad_2]

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Reach Career-Best World No. 2 Position
Following their victory at the Korea Open, India's top men's doubles team of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy moved up to a career-high second spot in the most recent BWF rankings on Tuesday.
Tumblr media
In the men's doubles rankings, Satwik and Chirag moved up a spot, replacing the Chinese team of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang who they had upset in the Korea Open quarterfinals the week before. With victories at the Korea Open (Super 500), Swiss Open (Super 300), and Indonesia Open (Super 1000) this year, the defending Asian champions have 87,211 points overall.
The world number one pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhamad Rian Ardianto were defeated by Satwik and Chirag in the Korea Open last week after coming back from a game down. This was their fourth final of the year.
The two are unbeaten in their last 10 BWF World Tour matches and have not lost a single final this season. PV Sindhu, who has won two Olympic medals, managed to keep her standing in the top 17 after leaving the Korea Open early.
Saina Nehwal, who won bronze in the London Olympics, has fallen one position to number 37. The top-ranked shuttler in India is still HS Prannoy, who is now ranked 10th in the men's singles standings, which are currently held by Victor Axelsen of Denmark.
Lakshya Sen, the champion of the Canada Open, dropped to world number 13 after skipping the Korea Open, but Kidambi Srikanth, who has been in poor form, is still in the top 20.
