Lady Joanna - by Sunryder (Ao3)
With HotD trailers dropping everywhere, my GoT obsession has grabbed me by the neck and won’t let go. I feed my obsession by reading fanfic, naturally. And then we see the results from caffeine-fueled, GoT-soundtrack-powered, fanfic-focused art frenzies.
The Lady Joanna series by sunryder over on Ao3 is a definite favourite of mine, hands down. All hail the strangest friendship in all the Seven Kingdoms.
We’re given an anti-social Lord and a young noblewoman who desperately wants to become a knight. I just love the unconventional nature of their friendship (and its a nice parallel to the complimentary nature of Jon and Stannis’ little-explored dynamic in the show). Both dutiful and honourable, but one’s more likely to bend first before breaking. And I just love how sunryder tackles both Stannis and Joanna; their dynamic is so well written.
There’s only two parts to Sunryder’s Lady Joanna Series so far, but I’ve loved every word of it.
... And the stories have been left at such a point that one can’t help but think of how this version of asoiaf could go… so naturally, my imagination got the better of me, and we have this little fan art series to explore that.

Do you have any writings abt sex and death, and how they're connected? Thanks if you decide to answer!
hiiiii yes♡
first and foremost is Bataille’s Erotism: Death and Sensuality which is expressly about this. everywhere you turn while researching this subject, Bataille will be mentioned. inclusive of this is a foray into religious eroticism/divine love/mysticism and elements of dissolution/continuity, violation and violence, aberration, so on... "There is no better way to know death than to link it with some licentious image." (pdf)
also v central are Freud’s theories surrounding our competing Eros/Thanatos drives, in which (as a very reductive summation) “the death instinct pervades sexual activity”; Freud also touches on dissolution, displacement and 'higher order/form'—you can see here one of the many ways Freud influenced Bataille's theories/writings. ultimately we might agree that the drives, rather than competing, are irreparably intertwined. "Life is displaced death, and death is displaced life." -> I like this article about them, but the source material is his Beyond the Pleasure Principle (pdf) +if you're interested in this, you could further research in sexology, sexual ethics and phenomenology as regarding sexualities linked to death, namely necrophilia, lust murder/sexual homicide, asphyxiophilia (sexual arousal by oxygen deprivation/erotic asphyxiation) and autassassinophilia (sexual arousal from the idea/risk of legitimately—imperatively, not in a fantasy-sense—being killed)
speaking of necrophilia (from Howard Barker’s afterword for Eroticism and Death in Theatre and Performance):
Tumblr media
the last two sentences accordant with the modern usage of la petite mort in which the sensation of orgasm is likened to death. literature which comes to mind: M.G. Lewis’ The Monk*, Gabrielle Wittkop’s Le Necrophile, Angela Carter’s “The Snow Child” and “The Lady of the House of Love” as published in The Bloody Chamber, Poppy Z. Brite’s Exquisite Corpse, some of Baudelaire’s poetry...
then getting into more periphery stuff, there’s a lot of theory on the corpse and its sexuality (touched on above) + fetishisation. some theories have to do with executions, others with the sexual aspects of ritual sacrifice, as below in Death Comes To The Maiden: Sex and Execution 1431-1933 by Camille Naish:
Tumblr media
more on the former in Julia Kristeva’s The Severed Head: Capital Visions and Nicole Loraux’s Tragic Ways of Killing a Woman
also the eroticisation of the medical venus—for this i heartily recommend Joanna Ebenstein’s The Anatomical Venus which is an absolutely fucking stunning artwork of a book to caress and coo over and cradle as you would a baby and which has a chapter dedicated to ‘Ecstasy, Fetishism and Doll Worship’ that delves into this (and religious eroticism, ne'er shall these subjects be pried apart for individual study it seems, not that i’m complaining)
Tumblr media
+supplementary readings into our corpse-like beauty standards, with the heroin chic of the 90s (which has perhaps insidiously returned?) but esp in terms of the consumptive beauty ideals of the fin de siècle x, x etc etc. pervasive and perverted when beauty—an engine of evolution/a vehicle for sexual selection—becomes dictated by icons of illness
other haphazard things which come to mind: Camille Paglia’s Sexual Personae (tw for terf rhetoric); Angela Carter’s Sadeian Woman; cause-and-effect death by sex horror trope/generic imperative of post Halloween/‘78 slasher film; death and the maiden trope ofc which is often highly sexualised
*there is a v good essay on this called “Between Life and Death: Representing Necrophilia, Medicine, and the Figure of the Intercessor in M.G. Lewis's The Monk” by Laura Miller

Male Sansa you are so beloved my sweet boy. The heir to winterfell but everyone thinks he’s a little bit ridiculous bc of his adherence to gentlemanly, frivolous southern customs despite being the future warden of the north. However he’s still courteous and charming enough to win over his fathers men. So he’s the odd one out but everyone still enjoys him. All the girls love how much of a sweet gentleman he is, and they love to watch him ride gracefully, dance gracefully, and spar gracefully. However he can be a bit snotty at times, despite his good intentions. So this means he frequently buts heads w/ Arry bc he doesn’t behave properly for his rank. Begging his father to betroth him to the princess (Joffahina? Idfk) so that he can become king consort and live in the south like he wants to, which Ned reluctantly agrees to. And we all know how that turns out…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arry my bad ass little kid who I raised…also I know he’s aged up but Harry Gilby is so perfect for this idk just imagine him as a child. A true wild Northman, he fits in more than his brother does, but he’s not as physically imposing as others, nor does he respect authority enough (which is very northern behavior in some cases, but also very disrespectful in most others). He’s the classic ASOIAF unruly second son. Everyone’s headache, constantly shrugging off his duties to go riding or sparing or exploring, ignoring social conventions to make friends with every kitchen boy and serving girl. Thinks his brother is a stuffy ass of course. Once his brother gets engaged to the princess, Arry is suddenly the new heir. Goes south to court and avoids every betrothal his father tries to make for him, learning the braavosi style with his dancing teacher instead. Once all hell breaks loose he certainly has A Time trying to get home and eventually going to Braavos to shrug off his identity as heir to winterfell to become Nobody

Baby Branwen my child. Curious and stubborn little girl who isn’t quite at the age where she needs to start acting like a proper lady, leaving her mostly free to climb and explore and generally do whatever she wants. She’s quite taken with the idea of how the queen became a renowned female warrior, and has dreams of becoming one too someday, begging her father for riding and sword lessons, of which he only gives her the first at the moment. Her fall ruins the widely expected idea of ever getting her married, and her own idea of becoming a warrior, thus leading most people to believe she has become a generally useless burden. After her and the Reeds escape from winterfell and beyond the wall, she starts leaning more and more into her greenseer and skin changing abilities with aid from the three eyed raven, but despite this slow loss of morality she’s still just a scared child
Tumblr media
Tiny Rina. Not much to say besides the fact that she’s still a feral three year old. No big changes from her male counterpart. However she IS riding back to winterfell on that damn unicorn I am making that canon in my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joanna Snow the most hard headed ambitious stubborn teenage girl in the world with a superiority AND inferiority complex she’s everything to me. Doubly ignored and scorned for not only being a bastard but a female bastard. Useless in Westeros’ eyes. To her she only has one option, and gets shipped off to like an “elite” woman’s fighting force instead of the wall but surprise surprise this place also sucks balls and it’s still as cold. It’s mostly full of other bastards, former prostitutes convicted of crimes, and third and fourth daughters who didn’t want to join the faith. Total asshole at first but is eventually ride or die for most of her girls and the organization they’re in bc she is nothing if not loyal to her word.

This escalated a lot, (which was a good distraction from everything so I'm taking that as a good thing), so now I have to give:
Warnings: Discussions and mentions of all the horrible things we warn for in Theon's Plotline, particularly the ones about depersonhood, sexual violence, casual violence, classism, and so on and so on + a few suicide jokes and links to artistic depictions of the aftermath of rape.
I moved a few weeks ago and haven't been able to unpack because I got injured during the moving and my other arm is also fucked up because of something else that happened this year and today I finally got to clean around and actually do stuff and arrange my room and I started with my book shelf, which obviously means I didn't actually do much because I just started rereading whatever book I hadn't seen in a while got to my hands. And after realising that I certainly have a type for narratives and characters I started thinking about Hannah from Until Dawn and how amazing it was to have a dead female character with little to no characterisation that subverted the "haunt the narrative" thing we see in many of the asoiaf girls from the dead ladies club and yeah I am thinking about Kyra again and that is not a good mentality.
Elia and Lyanna are given a personality and a face through those who loved them, they feel real because the pain of those who mourn them feels real. Even Joanna Lannister gets some of that through what little we find out of her.
Kyra is a dead lady but she’s not a member of the Dead Ladies Club™. She doesn’t get that privilege. The only person who thinks of her is Theon and it is not done lovingly.
Kyra has a personality we are not privy too. She is a satellite character that is mentioned exclusively in relation to Theon, even in the exception of Bran's POV. Her existence is conditioned to Theon.
Jeyne Poole, although often called one, isn't a satellite character. From the very beginning of the story she is already a presence in multiple POV character's lives, even if her role in the story and her characterisation is weak; She is Sansa's friend, Arya's bully, even Catelyn mentions her and in relation to Robb, but we don't ever see her interacting with her father and none of those characters seems very concerned of her well-being. I don't even know if Ned was planning on sending her with Arya & Sansa or if she was supposed to stay with her father. She later ascends a bit by becoming a secondary but fundamental character in Theon's POV and the Northern plot.
Kyra however is a blank page with a name. This isn't meant as something derogatory. I still have flashbacks of my 2016 experience in this fandom and the way the only kyra stan I ever met would wage a war on jeyne p fans. This isn't my intention.
With exception of Theon there are four other characters that are mentioned to have interacted with her.
Bessa, another serving wench who is implied to have participated on a threesome with her and Theon some time before Bran V, AGOT (Oooh she and Theon were bi4bi!)
Wex Pyke, is mentioned to have slept at the foot of Theon's bed, a bed on which Kyra slept as well. (Oooh Dog imagery and the implied possible witnessing of rape!)
Ramsay Snow...not going to write that. We all know what happened.
Ben Bones, "[...] Even if we do escape, Lord Ramsay will hunt us down, him and Ben Bones and the girls." generalised statement by Theon during his escape with Jeyne. Ben Bones isn't mentioned in relation to Kyra and him being caught during their failed escape.
These aren't even brief versions of her connections, I'm reaching out with many of them.
What else do we know about her?
Ok. She is a serving wench and probably works at the Smoking Log (Source: Bran)
She blushes easily and seems to be embarrassed by public talks of her sex life (Source: Theon)
She seems like an eager lover and seemed to be excited when Theon first took her to Winterfell (Source: Theon)
She had never been at the castle before (Source: Theon)
She acted as the big spoon as they slept together (Source: Theon)
She still refers to Theon as "M'lord" during early ACOK, even if the aforementioned positioning of the two would have us believe there might be more emotional intimacy or closeness between the two (Source: Theon)
Theon raped her (Source: Theon)
Ramsay possibly raped her (Source: Ramsay saying he wanted to bed her)
She was taken prisoner with the other women and children who were at Winterfell after Ramsay sacked the castle. (Source: Theon)
At some point she managed to set herself free, stole the keys to Theon's cell, liberated him, asked him to help her back to Winterfell and failed (Source: Theon)
She threw a rock at Ramsay when he caught her and Theon again, and missed by a foot (Source: Theon)
She was mauled to death by hounds (Source: Theon)
Ramsay named a hound meant to kill other women during future hunts after her (Source: Theon)
He had run before. Years ago, it seemed, when he still had some strength in him, when he had still been defiant. That time it had been Kyra with the keys. She told him she had stolen them, that she knew a postern gate that was never guarded. "Take me back to Winterfell, m'lord," she begged, pale-faced and trembling. "I don't know the way. I can't escape alone. Come with me, please." And so he had. The gaoler was dead drunk in a puddle of wine, with his breeches down around his ankles. The dungeon door was open and the postern gate had been unguarded, just as she had said. They waited for the moon to go behind a cloud, then slipped from the castle and splashed across the Weeping Water, stumbling over stones, half-frozen by the icy stream. On the far side, he had kissed her. "You've saved us," he said. Fool. Fool. It had all been a trap, a game, a jape. Lord Ramsay loved the chase and preferred to hunt two-legged prey. All night they ran through the darkling wood, but as the sun came up the sound of a distant horn came faintly through the trees, and they heard the baying of a pack of hounds. "We should split up," he told Kyra as the dogs drew closer. "They cannot track us both." The girl was crazed with fear, though, and refused to leave his side, even when he swore that he would raise a host of ironborn and come back for her if she should be the one they followed. Within the hour, they were taken. One dog knocked him to the ground, and a second bit Kyra on the leg as she scrambled up a hillside. The rest surrounded them, baying and snarling, snapping at them every time they moved, holding them there until Ramsay Snow rode up with his huntsmen. He was still a bastard then, not yet a Bolton. "There you are," he said, smiling down at them from the saddle. "You wound me, wandering off like this. Have you grown tired of my hospitality so soon?" That was when Kyra seized a stone and threw it at his head. It missed by a good foot, and Ramsay smiled. "You must be punished." Reek remembered the desperate, frightened look in Kyra's eyes. She had never looked so young as she did in that moment, still half a girl, but there was nothing he could do. She brought them down on us, he thought. If we had separated as I wanted, one of us might have gotten away. - Reek I, ADWD
A few things:
1)
Tumblr media
2) Kyra's own involvement
I've often seen people take Theon's inner thoughts as a fact. Most of us are convinced that this was all something Ramsay planned all along, that any possible escape was frustrated from the very beginning. I have often even seen fan works in which Kyra knows and tells Theon that Ramsay is planning to hunt them, but when looking closer to the text I find it difficult to believe that everything was a set up. In Theon's memories he mentions how the gaoler was drunk and had his breeches down, which I think implies that maybe it was Kyra who deliberately planned this. That maybe it was her who orchestrated him getting frunk and eventually also had sex with him, perhaps to get closer and take the keys. "She knew a poster gate that was never guarded" also implies that she wasn't held prisoner in the same way Theon was, but maybe was set up to become a slave/servant like Arya at Harrenhall and spent enough time roaming "free" to notice such things. If this was the case and it was her plan instead of Ramsay (who might or might not have maybe set up her environment and conditioned her thoughts of escape) then I think we can maybe add some other traits to her characterisation; we can assume she is observant, resilient and very brave.
3) I wanted to name this section "The Kiss" but then Klimt came to mind so we are naming it Frame 00:09:31 and Frame 00:09:38 of Belladonna of Sadness (tw the links for artistic depictions of the aftermath of rape)
There is often speculation going on whether the lack of something textual in these books can be seen as proof for something else. Canon romantic Jon/Sansa and the idea that Dany considers the Dothraki subhuman are often backed up by this sort of thought process (I admittedly don't believe in any of the aforementioned examples) but I don’t think we’ve ever seen it used in cases like that of Kyra, where I personally find it more fitting. Particularly when it comes to that scene and how Theon doesn't describe her response. I have always seen people take this as something reciprocal and sometimes even beautiful, and Theon internally chastising himself as he thinks of it is often attributed to thinking there was a chance of escape, when it could as well be him chastising himself because he kissed her without really considering how frightening the entire situation must have been for her. Her reasoning for setting him free is that he knows how to go back, not that she loves him or has forgive him. She is said to tremble as she pleads for help, her face is pale, and I can't help but wonder if part of her fear also came from having to beg her rapist to accompany her in her escape.
Based on her throwing a stone at Ramsay, who probably raped her in the past, I like to believe that when he kissed her she screamed, bit Theon and pushed him away.
4) The Girl
There are a few things in that text about Theon & Kyra that in hindsight remind me of Theon & Jeyne.
Some of it is relatively obvious and I have mentioned it in the past, such as the
"You've saved us," he said. - Reek I, ADWD
"You saved me," Jeyne had whispered, - Theon I, TWOW
and
"We should split up," he told Kyra as the dogs drew closer. "They cannot track us both." The girl was crazed with fear, though, and refused to leave his side, [...] If we had separated as I wanted, one of us might have gotten away. - Reek I, ADWD
"Stay close to me," Jeyne said. "Don't leave me." "I will be right beside you," Theon promised - Theon I, ADWD
but also
"Take me back to Winterfell, m'lord," she begged, pale-faced and trembling. "I don't know the way. I can't escape alone. Come with me, please." - Reek I, ADWD
He put a finger to her lips. "We can talk about that later. You need to be quiet now. Come with us. With me. We will take you away from here. Away from him." - Theon I, ADWD
and
Reek remembered the desperate, frightened look in Kyra's eyes. She had never looked so young as she did in that moment, still half a girl, but there was nothing he could do. - Reek I, ADWD
The eyes of the bride were brown. Big and brown and full of fear. It was not right that she should look to him for rescue.  - The Prince of Winterfell, ADWD
Overall my perception of things tells me that there was a drastic change in Theon's character after her death. It is him who this time has comed up with a plan and has to beg/repeatedly ask for someone else to accompany him. Something I find peculiar is how he describes fear being visible through their eyes and the sight of it makes him feel guilt over his lack of agency.
When comparing his behaviour during the failed escape and the flight we see that he no longer plans on leaving Jeyne in order to escape by himself (and we see him prove that during TWOW when he comments on how her ribs broke so HE CARRIED HER jdsfskdjfnsdkjf aren't you supposed to be emaciated???). And while I find that a very noble development, as I consider salvation to be symbiotic, it leads me to wonder:
5) The AU
So many fanworks often depict Theon holding her hand and going ahead as they run, it's a beautiful image but it doesn't follow into what the canon is telling us.
Kyra being the active one in this event, her having to be the one who not only approaches Theon with thoughts of escape but also begs for his help, implying he might have been hesitant at first, she being the one who refuses to leave him although he is set off on their(/his?) chances of a successful escape being higher if they part ways, all this points to him probably not wanting to hold her hand through it, much less lead her through his same path.
And then I think of Theon's promise
The girl was crazed with fear, though, and refused to leave his side, even when he swore that he would raise a host of ironborn and come back for her if she should be the one they followed. - Reek I, ADWD
Would he? Would he have returned with a host if ironborn to get her? I don't think he would have. I don't think he was consciously lying to her or that he would just forget of her and leave with no remorse and never think of her again. I think it would have become inconvenient to return and he would have told himself it is impossible and she would haunt him nonetheless, but what consolation is that for her?
If he had miraculously managed to get to his sister or to Dagmer Cleftjaw, had miraculously managed to rapidly heal and regain his strength, would he have been able to get himself a host of loyal ironborn that would follow him far far far into the land, away from the realms of he who dwells beneath the waves, just to save some random girl he used to bed? Ad given how emotionally constipated is, how introverted, how he rarely displays vulnerability, what could he have said in order to change their mind?
Even her physical appearance, something that Theon, a somewhat libidinous young man, might have remarked on, is omitted. She doesn't have thick auburn hair, which could have made some readers use her as "proof" for him being "psychosexually" (another word most people in here don't know how to define but will use regardless) attracted to Robb/Sansa/Cat. The eyes of the girl aren't "big and brown" for me and a few other delusional people to claim as "foreshadowing" for a future romance. There aren't any mentions of her having a sharp nose that could have made us think of her as a semblance of his own family back at the Islands. There is nothing. She is nothing.
Sometimes we readers attempt to give closure to Kyra through fan work; I have seen art depicting her as a ghost "forgiving" Theon, there are fics in which Theon takes care of the hound that was named after her or (I am guilty of this too) him taking care of Jeyne is somehow seen by the narrative as atonement for his past mistreatment of Kyra. None of these works are inherently bad or disrespectful and I can appreciate what they do and I enjoy many of them (@/ghostlyturncloaks has a very beautiful fic involving Theon and Kyra, the hound), but none of them will give Kyra, the actual Kyra who used to breath and was then killed by hounds, closure because that is simply impossible to do given how she is not a real character compared to those who surround her. When people in this fandom talk about "stanning the girls who suffer/are victims" it is often done either in a holier-than-thou light or in a derogative manner but it never refers to Kyra because Kyra isn't allowed to be a person in the text.
Taking care of Jeyne or the hound won't make things right for her and there are no reasons for her to forgive Theon when Theon refuses to even think of the act with indisputable textual remorse. We can read between the lines and realise that Theon feels guilt, the fact she "and her keys" haunt him is already proof of that, but does he feel guilt for her terrible death, for him raping her, for how little he valued her as a person or for all of these together?
And I don't think that Theon is inherently a bad person for not valuing her and not being interested in her as a person, I think such situations are cruelly casual and rarely intentional. I think most people across their life will come to realise that they should have valued someone more. Our feelings aren't reciprocal and that isn't necessarily a sign of vileness. And, to my shame, I admit that part of my obsession with my unlucky trio of Jeyne, Falia and Kyra is somewhat motivated by my own feelings of depersonalisation and overall worthlessness and irrelevance.
It is difficult to explain, at most I can maybe compare it to the way Dany has managed to appeal to so many woc through her journey. Cersei, Dany, Arya and Sansa are all well written, interesting and profound characters that will go down in history both in and out of universe as such. Kyra won’t, neither will Falia, the Jeynes might have but they weren’t enough and were quickly replaced without many mourning that change in the way we mourn Daenerys' popularised end game as a mad queen or Arya's popularised endgame as a badass assassin without any nuisance. And I can understand why! This anger is purely mine!
With Kyra there is a world to explore, but only as long as Theon is no longer there. We can't give her a respectful characterisation if our only source and voice is that of Theon, if we were to that it would probably be highly ooc. But then again we can't even interact with her without Theon being in the picture. What happened to Bessa? Was she killed during the Winterfell sack? Were they friends? I imagine they were close if the two worked together and also had a threesome. Did she feel fear and maybe a pang of jealousy when she saw her being summoned to the castle to never come back to their inn? Did Kyra have a family? Maybe they were working the fields in the late summer/early autumn and were hoping to see her in winter again. I will be arrogant by referring to the images meme I recently made for her but yeah, Nathaniel Russel's fake fliers you will go down in my memory:
Tumblr media
Even something as benign and well meaning as giving her a face, be it by a film/show/comic-adaptation or fan art, is somewhat counterproductive to what I think might have been aimed by the writer through her being a faceless pain. A face can make someone become sympathetic or interesting, meanwhile Kyra is pain unbridled and without any mentioned outer or inner beauty to get us to be invested in her. I might have my headcanons for her, with and without Theon, but I am not meant to have them.
The most common Tumblr tag for the sharing of Kyra related posts is "#kyra and her keys" and although this will be perceived by may as a holier than thou attitude I think it speaks on itself that we readers, the few readers who care enough about Kyra to dedicate a post to her, have decided to refer to her with a concept Theon chose for her. We define her through Theon without any real consideration for her own feelings. "#kyra asoiaf" has about three posts last I checked.

Oh, poor Elia Martell. I felt so sorry for her and her children. Modern Reader knows about the future of Elia and her children, so I think Modern Reader would try her best to save her and her children.
I don’t know, but I heard that House Martell was in Casterly Rock offering a betrothal between Cersei Lannister and Oberyn Martell and that happened after Joanna’s death. While there was a discussion on betrothal, Oberyn and Elia met Modern Reader and they became friends. I think while being trapped in Kings Landing in the Red Keep, Modern Reader would be by Elia’s side and taking care of her children Rhaenys and Aegon.
When Robert’s rebellion started, Modern Reader knew what would happen next and she didn’t want Elia and her children die, so she made a plan. Modern Reader sent a letter to Martells, to prepare a ship, then Modern Reader asks Jaime to help her, getting attention from guards that were standing outside of Elia’s chambers. She also told him her plan
Yandere platonic Jaime: Will I see you again?🥺
Modern Reader: We will see each other again, dear brother☺️. I promise you that. Please be careful, all right?
Yandere platonic Jaime: I will.
Then they start a plan, it happened at night. Modern Reader was inside Elia’s chambers and told Elia to get herself and her children ready, “It’s not safe to stay here, Elia. You and your children are in danger and I don’t want to lose my friend. Do you trust me?”- Modern Reader asked. “Yes, I trust you.”- Elia replied. When the guards weren’t around, Modern Reader holds Aegon in her hands and Elia holds Rhaenys in her hands (both wearing cloaks) leave the bedchambers and then leave the Red Keep unnoticed. When they are outside, they can see a ship with Martell flag, then they get into the boat and sail to the ship. The dornish men with Oberyn notice them and help them to get in the ship, first Rhaenys and Aegon, then Elia. But Modern Reader didn’t know whether to go with them or not. But it was decided, when Elia holds out her hand for Modern Reader. Modern Reader grabs her hand and gets into the ship and now they sail away from Kings Landing to Sunspear (capital of Dorne). While they are sailing, Modern Reader thinks about how her family (Yandere platonic House Lannister) is doing while she would be in Dorne. Modern Reader worries about Jaime and she would send him a letter telling him that she’s all right.
Finally Modern Reader, Elia, Oberyn, Rhaenys and Aegon reach the Sunspear. Modern Reader is welcomed in Dorne by Martells, because Modern Reader saved Elia and her children. Then Doran Martell tells Modern Reader, Oberyn and Elia that Aerys 2 demands Modern Reader to return. Modern Reader was ready to return, but Martells stop her, explaining that it’s not safe in Kings Landing and Elia repeats the same words “I don’t want to lose my friend.”
While she’s in Dorne, Modern Reader sends letters to her family (Tywin, Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion) that she’s all right and she’s treated well in Dorne. Also Modern Reader would ask Doran and Oberyn to go to the Tower of Joy with a few men (where Lyanna Stark is trapped after “being kidnapped”), then they (Oberyn, Modern Reader and dornish men) get in that place there would be a fight but I think Arthur Dayne and other Kings Guards surrender. Modern Reader and Oberyn see pregnant Lyanna laying on the bed (a few weeks later Jon Snow will be born). Modern Reader and Oberyn escort pregnant Lyanna to the Sunspear where good maesters could help. Modern Reader asks Martells not to tell what happened to Lyanna’s father and brother (who were executed by Mad King) and tell her after Jon would be born and after Lyanna feels all right. Then Modern Reader would send letters to Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon during rebellion “Lord Eddard Stark, Lord Robert Baratheon, I must inform you that Lady Lyanna Stark is saved and now she’s in Sunspear but I must inform you that Lyanna was pregnant and now she has a child. I think you need to know that. Lady Lyanna Stark and her child are safe, they will be in Sunspear, until the war is won. Your good friend Lady Y/N Lannister.”
In conclusion Elia and her children, also Lyanna are saved thanks to Modern Reader. Modern Reader and Lyanna with little Jon Snow will stay in Dorne until the war is won. House Martell and Lyanna Stark become yandere platonic towards Modern Reader.
I think House Martell wouldn’t join the war, which is a win for rebellions. Also Ned and Robert would appreciate Modern Reader for saving Lyanna Stark and Jon Snow. I have no doubts that Yandere platonic House Lannister would be so happy to see Modern Reader. I already see how Cersei runs happily towards Modern Reader and embrace her with a tight hug.
Yandere platonic Cersei: I missed you so much, big sister. I was so worried about you. 🥹
Modern Reader: I missed you too, dear sister. I’m okay as you can see.🥰
Then Yandere platonic Jaime and Tyrion came to meet Modern Reader: Hello, sister.🥹☺️
Modern Reader: Hello, my dear brothers. I told you we will see each other again. 🥰😉
And then there’s a group hug, meanwhile Tywin is standing there and watching. He cannot help, but smile. Tywin is happy to see his child.
Phew, that’s a lot. So what do you think? Imagine Rhaegar’s face when he finds out that not only Elia and her children are saved, but also Lyanna Stark is saved by Modern Reader and now Targaryen House lost control over Martell House, since Elia isn’t a hostage anymore. Not to mention Ser Arthur Dayne and other kings guards are captured by Modern Reader and Martells, although they would return to their families. Man, Aerys and Rhaegar would be shocked to these consequences. What do you think what would happen afterwards? What would happen after the rebellion? Since Lyanna is alive, I think Robert wouldn’t want to be the King or he could marry Lyanna and legitimise Jon Snow and become King and Queen of Seven Kingdoms. There are many possibilities. But Modern Reader, Y/N Lannister would be seen in a good light.
I always dreamed of a miracle that would save Elia and her children. Thanks to the reader, Eli and his children, Lyanna and Jon are safe. Rhaegar and Aerys are in for the shock of their lives. Martells will forever consider himself indebted to the reader. The Lannisters and the reader now live happily ever after and together. I actually have a few theories. Robert and Ned will rebel. House Targaryen is disappearing. Robbert is marrying either Cersei or possibly Lyanna. Jon is hiding again and growing up under Ned's care. Or Rhaegar ascends the throne. Elia lives happily in Dorneya with her children. Rhaegar keeps his son Jon and Lyanna with him.

When all of House Stark wake up one morning with their deaths being their clearest memories, the wheel begins to turn. After the Duel on the Trident, there are ramifications that none could foresee. In the world built afterwards, dragons once again rule and roam Westeros, among them the son of a northern beauty and the king. Meanwhile Gendry Waters has been plucked out of the life he knew to become his ailing father's heir, Robb, Theon and later Rickon embark on military careers in the Napoleonic wars, and their aunt Lysa makes a foolish marriage.

A Caged Songbird By bikadoo
“I will be a silent, and dutiful wife,” Sansa spits. “I will be their pretty little songbird, and wear their ugly crown, and sit on their painful throne. I shall give him a babe, and my love, and I will wait until he thinks that he has won. And then I shall take his life."
Shae goes still. "You ... you plan to kill the King?"
"No," Sansa says. "I plan to kill my husband."

37 - Battle Celebration
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 38
Fire OF A Stark
@dragonixfrye
By the time the morning had returned over Winterfell castle everything was silent and the ground was covered with the bodies that had fallen during the long battle. Joanna’s wings were flapping lazily when we headed towards the ground. The snow gets pushed around when her claws hit the ground. Scanning over the battlefield I could feel a nervous pit in my stomach searching for Jaime. “Come on girl. We need to find him…Jaime!”
“Lynesse…urgh…Little dragon!” Whipping my head around I heard his voice come across the field. Climbing down off her saddle Joanna made a noise when I started running as fast as my legs could carry me seeing the golden hair and green eyes coming straight towards me.
Jaime halted in his tracks doing the best to catch me when I fling my arms around his body. We fell onto the snow clinging onto one another for dear life. “You are never allowed to fight anymore battles, do you understand me? You are supposed to remain by my side and not do anything reckless ever again Jaime Lannister.”
“Believe me, little dragon. I don’t intend on fighting anymore. There shouldn’t be any more battles after this one. The only thing you and I should worry about is us and our daughter.” He declares where I broke the hug getting to my feet offering my hand for him to take and he does where I grunted pulling him up to stand.
Wrapping my arms around his neck once more I sighed in relief. He wrapped his arms around my waist tugging me into his chest. He rested his forehead against mine hearing someone coming our direction. "Thank the gods that you two made it. I don't think I could have been a great father to Rhea. I am planning on being the fun drunk uncle Tyrion."
"Tyrion. Rhea..thank the gods." I stepped forward taking her from my brother in law's arms. Cradling her in my arms my eyes lifted back up to the castle where we all headed back inside. There was a beautiful sound of laughter that filled the halls of my former home. Slipping on a change of clothes I was wearing a gray tunic and some trousers. My hair was in two separate braids falling over my shoulders and my sword was attached to my hip even though there shouldn’t be any more battles to fight…you can never be too careful though.
Holding my daughter on my knee I bounced her up and down making her giggle. It hurt my heart to know that the last time there was laughter here was when the Stark family was still whole. "We will have you splashing in the water in the days to come, Rhea. I used to jump from the highest rock and into the water below with no ounce of fear. You shall too, my little lioness-dragon." Jaime explained tickling his daughter on the bottom of her feet making her giggle.
"And I remember once that you told me that you wouldn't be a good father." I teased him raising my glass of wine seeing Brienne and Tyrion walking over to us.
Tyrion slides in on the other side of the table sitting beside his brother. He pours himself a tall glass of wine sliding the wine over to the others wanting them to join in. “I have a drinking game that I enjoy. Let’s play that.”
Jaime nodded, pouring some for the First Lady knight of the Seven kingdoms. “We fought dead things and lived to talk about it. If this isn't the time to drink, when is?”
One of Jon’s men that was raised over the wall raises his glass causing everyone in the room to cheer beside him. “To the Dragon Queen!”
“To Arya Stark, the hero of Winterfell!” Daenerys raised her cup mentioning my younger sister who wasn’t in the room but she was rather out in the stables practicing her archery skills. She had managed to kill the Night King so now she was the greatest hero ever.
My brother in law turned to me explaining the rules of the game he apparently invented. “Here’s how it works. I will make a statement about your past. If I’m wrong I drink and if I am right you drink….you were trained how to sword fight by your brother Robb and Jon Snow.”
“Darn you Lannister.” I mutter drinking from my cup being the first to go. “Jaime’s turn.”
He pressed his lips together staring at Brienne. “Um...You are an only child.”
“I told you I was.” She knitted her brows.
He fought back. “You didn't.”
She shook her head. “I did.”
“I surmised it.” He waved his hand pointing his finger at her.
“Drink.” Tyrion raised his cup to his brother. “Go again.”
“Why does he get to go again?” She grumbled at the dwarf.
He crossed his arms over his chest, smirking.“Because it's my game.”
Rhaenyra reached for the cup in my hand so I held it away from her making her whine. Bending my head down I hummed the song that Sansa had taught me knowing it calmed her down. Jaime smiled in my direction finding that the torch light made your white hair almost glow giving him an idea when the three of you traveled. “You have danced with Renly Baratheon.”
Tyrion declared seeing that she looked at her squire Poddtrick who smiled. “Drink.”
“You kissed someone before Jaime?” She asked me making me lift my cup pretending that she was right but I pointed towards her smirking.
She glared at me drinking again trying to think of something. “Hmm..you once tried to cut your hair to look like a man, but Lady Catelyn was furious when she found out.”
“Fine.” I take a drink from my cup knowing she was right. I hadn’t told anyone but you could see parts of my hair were shorter than the others meaning I had layers from the incident.
It was an hour later and the game was still going on. Tyrion was leaning against the back of his chair tapping his fingers on the table watching his little niece. “Mm! You were married. Before Sansa.” She asked him suddenly.
“Drink.” Jaime pointed his finger at his brother's chest. The three of us watched the dwarf drink a long sip from his cup.
Tyrion shifted in his seat moving his gaze between his brother and I. Sucking in a breath I had no clue who he was going to talk about or what he would say. “You have thought about having more children since your birth of Rhaenyra.”
“Tyrion…that doesn’t count.” I blushed as red as the Lion banner. Jaime nudged me with his arm accidentally giving me the opportunity to see that my husband was blushing too yet he had that cheeky smirk on his face at the same time.
He cleared his throat moving his gaze downward to our daughter seeing that she was messing with her uncle Tyrion’s beard. “Tyrion…would you mind watching her for a little while?”
“You're drinking wine, but you prefer ale!” Brienne hit her fist on the table starting the game again seeing that Jaime and I had our minds elsewhere.
Tyrion laughed, finally looking in our direction. “No! Oh and of course I’ll watch the little dragon. But I demand to know some details later.”
Jaime and I got to our feet where I grabbed his hand dragging him through the hallway hearing Tyrion’s next statement of the game. “You're a virgin. At no point in the past, up until this very moment, have you slept with a man. Or a woman.” Yet we couldn’t be bothered to turn back.
“You should have told me you wanted children, little dragon. This could have happened so much sooner.” He told me capturing my lips with his own.
I pushed him against the wall wrapping my arms around his neck deepening the kiss smirking up at the lion. “Well I’m sorry. But you seem to have forgotten that we have been running from your sister and the army of the dead for quite some time. So I couldn’t really suggest to you that I wanted another baby now.”
“Avy jorrāelan lynesse stark-targārien (I love you Lynesse Stark-Targaryen)." He muttered in between our heated kisses. He switched our position where my back got pressed against the stone wall. He moved his real hand to cradle my face breaking the kiss eyeing the crown that sat upon my head now. "Pōnta istan calling hen naejot se tolie dāria zaldrīzoti tonight. Yn se mērī dāria nyke ūndegon iksos se mēre standing paktot isse naejon hen issa. ( They were calling out to the other dragon queen tonight. But the only queen I see is the one standing right in front of me.)"
Squeezing his shoulders underneath my fingernails I tugged him closer into my chest. I felt the golden hand go underneath my tunic shirt where I mumbled in between the heated kiss. "Avy jorrāelan jaime lannister."
"Nyke surprised naejot gūrēñagon bona targaryens aren't se mērī ones naejot ȳzaldrīzes valyrīha dombo. (I am surprised to learn that Targaryens aren't the only ones to speak Valyrian anymore.)" Whipping our heads around in the direction of the voice we broke away from one another seeing that Daenerys was standing in the middle of the hallway staring at us closely.
Separating from his embrace I gently put a hand to the crown feeling that it was about to fall off my head. "Daenerys. I should thank you. Having another dragon rider out there helped a great deal-"
"So it was true what Tyrion said about you. You are the one who holds the long lost crown of Rhaenyra. And that means that you and your Lion husband shall fight for the claim of the Iron Throne and Dragonstone." She cut me off and I could hear the annoyance in her tone.
"I don't intend on fighting for the throne. I don't want any part of it. You can have it no matter what. I just want to live out my life with my husband and our daughter." I exclaimed to her not expecting her to still see me as an enemy.
She stepped forward eyeing the crown upon my head. "If you don't want the throne then why are you wearing this?"
"I…uh…because I saw Rhaenyra in a dream. She told me she wanted me to find it." I stuttered on my words thankfully Jaime attempted to step up.
"My wife said she doesn't want the throne isn't that enough. You only have my sister fighting against you for it." He intertwined my hand with his leading us back to our chambers leaving the queen alone with her thoughts. "We will talk later, Daenerys."
Once the door was shut behind me I slumped my shoulders running my fingers through my hair. Staring at myself in the mirror I trained my eyes on the golden object on my head. "What if Rhaenyra was right about me, Jaime?"
"Right about what, Lynesse?" He came behind me wrapping his arms around my middle.
Turning in his arms I draped my arms over his shoulders meeting his green gaze. "In my dream she told me that the Iron Throne needed someone with the right family name. But also someone who wanted nothing to do with ruling the Seven kingdoms…someone like me."
"I thought you didn't want the throne, little dragon. You said that you wanted to return home to Casterly Rock and begin our lives again or have I misunderstood you?" He asked me tucking some hair behind my ear for me.
Dropping my gaze for a brief moment I hesitated in my answer to him. "I don't really know anymore. Dany declared she wants it. But before she got here you saw the Lords of the North bend the knee and declare me queen…I have no clue what the right thing to do is. I just love you and Rhea, that is all I know for certain."
"Whatever you decide I will be by your side. We are family and Lannisters always look out for their family." He mumbled wrapping his arm around my waist tugging me into his chest. Wrapping my arms around his neck I sighed looking back at us in the mirror. Jaime was staring down at me and I was staring straight at him with the dragon crown tilted on my head.

Terrible Fic Ideas #5: The White Princess, but make it GoT
I have a terrible weakness for female!Jon Snow fics - mostly because making the character female gives a fascinating array of opportunities to unite two rival claims to the Iron Throne and all the drama that involves. So what about a fic where the people with the strongest claim to the throne - female!Jon Snow and Robert Baratheon - end up married?
Hear me out:
Much as Elizabeth of York objectively had a better claim to the throne than her husband, Henry VII, a female!Jon Snow (called Joanna from here on out) would have the Targaryen bloodline claim but no chance of getting on the throne herself even if she wasn't presented to the world as her uncle's bastard. Westeros doesn't abide female rulers.
But if you marry her bloodline claim to the man with the next best claim - her second cousin once removed, Robert Baratheon, who's actually got the throne - you have the strongest of any possible claim. One which could make the greatest number of factions happy, if only they knew about it.
But how to make it happen? It's easy to imagine Robert trying to take Joanna to bed, as she resembles her mother a great deal, but how to make it a legal union? I see two options:
One: In the aftermath of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Robert heads north, sees 14 year old Joanna looking the image of his lost love, and pulls out some ancient Targaryen law that lets the king have two wives. No one is particularly thrilled with this idea except for Robert, but he's the king and the most optimistic hope it will turn down his whoring. Or,
Two: In the aftermath of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Robert heads north after Cersei has been found in the act of adultery while he was at war, and seeing Joanna the image of his lost love demands they marry on the spot. No one's particularly happy with this scenario either, but at least it's not bigamy.
Either way, Joanna ends up in Kings Landing as a/the Queen and because Robert is his usual lusty self, winds up with a son in short order. If it Cersei's still in the picture, there's a lot of politicking and worry for her life and that of her child. If Cersei's gone, there's still politicking but with whatever Lannisters remain upset her child is replacing their prince, who they claim is legitimate still.
Sometime while she's still a relatively young bride of 16 or 17, while she's about halfway through her second pregnancy, Robert dies like in the book, and Joanna ends up the regent to her young son, the new king. There's a regency council of course, but she has more power than one might think at first glance.
The truth of her ancestry is never really announced so much as quietly discovered by multiple parties in multiple ways, who quietly go along with it because it suits their needs/politics/etc. Eventually the various parties wonder why everyone else is going along with it too, and after some poking it just sort of... comes out. It doesn't change anything, because inheritance puts her son's claim before her own, but it helps the last of her detractors.
As a side plot, Prince Oberyn comes to Kings Landing to swear Dorne's allegiance to the new king on his brother's behalf and strikes up a flirtation with Joanna. At first that's all it is, especially as she's just about to birth her second child, but they end up forming an odd friendship. Joanna likes Dorne and how they treat their bastards, and Dorne likes her because they think her mother was one of theirs. After 2 or 3 years of this, they marry. It's part political - draws in Dorne, helps make up for Elia's murder, and gives Joanna and her son a loyal defender - and part a love match - they get along and Joanna begrudges Oberyn his paramours no more than she'd begrudged Robert.
That's all I really have, but the idea tickles me. So feel free to borrow it, just link me if you ever do anything with it.

Calling for Desire & Decorum Fans!
If you are missing the series as much as me, I have a solution. Her name - @noesapphic. I prescribe a fic per night (good luck to not get addicted after the first paragraph) to kill the longing for our favourite characters. She has a vast collection of fanfics and series inspired in Desire & Decorum universe.
💖 Click here to check her Desire & Decorum Masterlist. 💖
However, I would like to highlight her series "THE CURSED HEIRESS" (Click here to check the masterlist) and her OC/MC Joanna.
Tumblr media
"Joanna is a young woman who has grown up between two worlds. Upon the deaths of her fiancé and mother, a prophecy sends her to live with her father, the Earl of Edgewater. A discovery will take her on a quest to end a threat that looks to end the world as we’ve known it. Thank the gods she’s not alone in this." (@noesapphic synopsis and moodboard)
Despite its inspiration had come from our beloved Desire & Decorum, she had created a whole new, complex and fantastic universe around the original story plot that will blow you away - magnificent lands, dark places, gods, kings, queens... You will laugh, swoon, cry, feel the excitement and the fear run through your veins.
The series is reaching her peak, so, hurry up!
As if these weren't enough reasons, I'll add one more: her writing style is simply brilliant. Honestly, I envy her (not in a bad way, but in a deep admiration) - her perseverance, her dedication, her ability to connect all the details, her delicious imagination… you'll understand when you read her work.
Finally, I would like to highlight the fics below. Despite being linked to the TCH universe, they explore our beloved characters, letting us know each person's versions of the facts and their innermost selves.
INTERMISSIONS [COMPLETE]
The Fall and Raising of A Rose
Snow Prince
In Another Life

Find the Word Tag
Thank you for the tag @hannahcbrown This looks like fun!
The words I was tagged to find were moon, home, hearth, and tears.
Moon: I’m surprised this one hasn’t featured more in my writing. I’ll have to fix that! For now, have this excerpt from Chapter 4 of Wildflower:
Growing up in a city with permanent light pollution, Claire had been amazed that first night out on her own at just how dark it got in the country. Petrified of stumbling around half blind and falling off a cliff, she’d wrapped herself in the only blanket she’d had, used her lumpy rucksack as a pillow, and vainly tried to catch some sleep on the cold, damp ground.
Tonight, however, there was no cloud covering the full moon, so the mountainside was bathed in a surprisingly bright silvery glow. Claire found that it wasn’t too difficult to follow the packed earth trail in this light, but she still kept to the middle of path, just to be safe. Falling down the mountain at night would spell almost certain death.
Home: I felt like this excerpt from Grandfather was fitting for this tag:
No longer needing to shelter them from the wind, Joanna drew back the fabric with her free hand to reveal a little girl clutched to her chest. The child’s eyes were closed in an exhausted slumber, but even so Barley could see the strong similarities between her and his daughter. He opened his mouth, questions bubbling up in his throat.
“…Not now, Dad,” Joanna murmured in a voice heavy and defeated, and Barley automatically shut his mouth again. His mind was still spinning, desperately trying to catch up, but he recognised that now was not the time to be asking anything. Suddenly, he felt 20 years older than his body actually was.
“…I still have your old bed…” he finally muttered, already heading for the stairs, “…I’ll just get you some fresh sheets…”
His daughter didn’t reply, didn’t thank him or apologise for the sudden intrusion. She just silently followed, a few paces behind, as her old dad led the way upstairs in a house she had once called home.
Hearth: I’m ashamed to say I’ve never used this one in my writing, but I do have this piece from Miraculous that I feel fits the theme, if not the exact word:
Heart pounding, you pulled open the door of your home and were hit with a welcoming blast of warm air. You were so glad you stopped to light the fire before you set off round the farm, even if the sudden warmth did make your face tingle. Trying not to jostle the kitten in your coat too much, you shut the door firmly and banished the freezing storm.
The tiny animal felt the immediate warmth, and began to wriggle in your arms. You quickly grabbed a small wooden crate that you used to ship crops and a thick hoodie that was draped over the end of your bed. Ignoring the way your boots left clods of snow across the floor, you marched towards the kitchenette.
You set up the crate and hoodie as a cosy bed for the kitten close, but not too close, to the crackling fireplace, and gently deposited the little creature into the bundle of fabric. The kitten instantly started kneading the comfy cloth, pulling up threads with its tiny claws. You didn’t mind.
Tears: This one featured in so many of my writings! I decided to go for ‘happy tears’ and pulled this excerpt from my favourite piece so far: Photograph:
Ocean-blue eyes met each other, and the young lady’s hand flew to her mouth, her bag dropping forgotten to the panelled floor. The motion made a gold, heart-shaped locket around her neck glint in the light, and Cliff didn’t have to see inside it to know exactly what photograph it held. His breath caught in his throat, and his knees suddenly felt as weak as an old man’s. Tears started to creep into the corners of his eyes as he watched them spill from the young woman’s.
“…C-Cliff…?” she breathed hesitantly, as though she was afraid to hear the answer.
“…H-Heather…” he croaked at last, and all at once it was like someone flicked on the light switch in a pitch-black room. One of them gave a stuttering cry, it was impossible to tell which one, and just like that they were in each other’s arms, hands wrapped around shoulders like they were afraid to let go.

So what is Joanna's story?
this ask got insanely long so i put it under the cut! but i hope you don’t mind the info dump eheheehe
Tumblr media
a simple explanation: it’s a story about betrayal, revenge, and love.
a more detailed explanation: josana lannister was raised to be tywin’s prized pupil. he took note of her sharp mind and cunning tongue at a young age, and wanted to exploit it, to transform her into his ultimate weapon. she was taught to be extremely well-read, to lie as easily as speaking the truth, and to manipulate her surroundings and the people beside her to achieve her goal by any means necessary. and josana in a quick leaner, easy to adapt to please her lord uncle to become a true lioness of the south. and when the time came to show her usefulness, josana did little to object.
tywin wants to control the world. he had cersei the queen of the seven kingdoms, planned to have jaime become the warden of the east after the death of jon arryn, and now, he would send his beloved niece to winterfell to wed ned stark’s eldest son to control the north. she is to marry robb stark, provide heirs, and raise them as lions rather than wolves. she is also to spy on the starks, to gather information and inform her uncle with anything of importance.
when she arrives in winterfell along with the king and her cousins, it initially starts out pretty well. she and robb get along well enough as they are newly betrothed and the rest of the starks like her enough to have conversations, but mainly sansa and bran ( bran bc josana’s younger brother is a knight of the kingsguard and he keeps begging her to tell him more since it’s his dream to become one as well ).
but her civil relationships with the starks dwindle away once everything happens between them and the lannisters. the wedding between her and robb keeps getting pushed back, she starts to receive pointed looks and rude remarks every where she turns, and she feels completely and utterly alone with no one to turn to except her lady-in-waiting, sarra snow, roose bolton’s bastard.
regardless, her circumstances don’t halt her from her schemes. she continues to send letters to her uncle, with the help of sarra so it’s less suspicious, and try her best to survive in a castle full of wolves. when robb calls the banners and means to march south, he takes josana with him on the campaign. a campaign is no place for a high-born lady, but robb would rather have eyes on her at all times than to have her remain in winterfell with his younger brothers.
in the campaign, josana feels trapped in a corner. and it only gets worse once they capture her cousin, jaime, and her family kills lord eddard stark. she can’t reach out to her uncle without anyone knowing, she can’t return back to casterly rock as she is now a prisoner in all but name, and the safety of a betrothal is now gone thanks to the alliance with house frey. it is truly rough out there for my girl.
but things slowly start to turn around now that josana has been with the starks for so long to have seen who they truly are: honorable, noble, and loyal. the starks could’ve had her shackled to a post and leave her to rot, but they didn’t. they could’ve left her to the hands of the north men to do with her as they please, but they didn’t. they showed her kindness as their hostage, something she knew her family would never do. and that plants the seed of doubt in josana’s allegiance. was her family as glorious and righteous as she remembered? or were they dishonorable, fearsome, and treacherous as everyone says they were?
ultimately, she becomes devoted to robb when she kills a lannister informant posed as a notherner. now, there are two reasons behind her killing him. 1.) because she no longer wants to be a spy for her uncle and doesn’t want to betray the starks anymore. 2.) survival. if this spy were to out her treason, her death would be imminent. so she had to choose: tywin or robb. and she chose the latter, which truly begins their romantic arc.
and what’s important to remember is that josana will never, ever, tell the truth about formally being a spy. it is important because it plays a HUGE factor into the rest of this story. she will have to live with that guilt and betrayal until the end of her days. and all actions have consequences in this story.
anyways, there’s so much more to this story, but i figured this ask is already long enough lol! if you’d like to know more, feel free to ask !!

We have a bumper crop of new Phantom literature as we race into summer!
Patricia Peacock und das Phantom in der Oper by Tiffany Crockham is a German-language mystery about a crime-solving duo in period times who are stuck trying to protect a famous Italian diva at the Cairo Opera House who is being ruthlessly targeted, along with the rest of the ensemble, by a mysterious figure haunting the place.
The Voyeur of the Opera: Captive in His Lair by Dulcinea Drakos is a sultry retelling of the original story, with plenty of sex scenes and a focus on which of her two lovers Christine will choose in the end.
Not Alone by A.L. Flagg is a flipped-roles modern-day story in which a young woman named Eden is attacked, leaving her severely scarred and hiding from the world, until she falls in love with a newcomer and must decide whether she can come out of isolation and how to deal with the world that hurt her in the first place. (I’d call it a bit more of a Beauty & the Beast story, but like many publishers, this one claims it’s a “fusion” of that story with the Phantom one.)
Chandelier by Michael Leon is the sequel to his previous book, Phantoms, and carries on the story after Erik’s escape from the opera house, moving to the future of the 22nd century where an aging diva hides secrets from other performers and a young pianist is frightened by the sudden and incredible increase of his peformance skills.
The Phantom of Nob Hill Theater by John Luke Maxwell is a gay romance novel about a retired porn actor, the community theater performance he’s involved in, and someone behind the scenes trying to Stop the Show and/or kill the performers. Of course, it’s very sexy. It’s literally in the theater’s name.
The Lost Melody by Joanna Davidson Politano is a period story about a young pianist who, when her parents die, discovers a strange connection to a woman currently being held in an asylum and struggles with strange letters and unearthly music that seem to follow her everywhere she goes.
In Too Deep by Elaine Runmore is a period rewrite of the original story, in which Christina is a street busker singing for coins in an English port and is being followed by a mysterious dark figure in the shadows who would do anything to hear her voice...
Behind the Mask by MaryAnn Sires is a prequel to her long-running The Phantom’s Lady series, although the prerelease announcement doesn’t give us much to go on as far as what it’s about. We can probably safely guess it’s at least got some backstory for the Phantom and the other main characters, though!
Corruption by Jenika Snow is a modern-day version of the story in which the Phantom character is a hired killer for the Russian mafia and struggles with his love for the innocent young ballerina he knew in childhood, only to kidnap her and keep her hostage when he realizes that she is about to marry someone else.
A Dance with Danger by Marisa Wright is the story of a ballet dancer who, after his legs are crushed and he loses the ability to dance or walk, hides from the rest of the world, only to be dragged back into the light when he meets his brother’s beautiful ballerina fiancee and a power struggle begins to determine which of the brothers she will choose.
We also have three “maybe” options this week, for those who like to intrepidly find out exactly how much Phantom influence there is in a suspicious work:
Tumblr media
The Vanishing of Willa Sloan by Andrea Dias is a modern-day story about a girl whose mother vanishes during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing her to search for her until she discovers that her mother’s past as a ballerina in Paris was far from idyllic and that only traveling to Paris will allow her to finally learn the truth.
The Phantom Violinist: Play Like the Devil by Nigel Street has a lot of classic Phantom elements: a haunted, possibly evil violin that plays unbelievable music, a performer who isn’t sure whether their talent is their own or from some outside force, and of course dangerous performances that spiral out of control. However, it’s hard to tell if this is just one of those works that riffs on other evil violin stories (like Lovecraft’s Erich Zann) or whether it actually has a connection to the Phantom’s original story or one of its successors (the 1989 Little/Englund film would make sense...).
Ximphonic Versus: Symphony of the Phantom Knight by Scotlynd Xing Xin-Bedford is... well, to be honest, it’s very hard to tell what it is? It’s set five thousand years in the past in a fantasy universe in which a prince named Addonnis, a superlative singer, travels around with his mentor Concerto only to discover other ambitions when he encounters the princess of the faraway glass kingdom. It’s got a lot of music, haunting, and other Phantom-esque elements, but it offers no previews and I have no earthly clue what else is going on, so good luck to those who find out!
That’s it for this time, but let’s hope June’s offerings are just as exciting!

Potentiality Chapter 2
AO3 Link
Winterfell | Pentos
Jon started out planning on leaving within a moon or two, until he realized just how hard that would be--a young woman wasn't a young man. No matter that Joanna had been training in swords and bows before he ever took her body and increased that training, she was still a woman and that's all anyone saw when they looked at Jon.
Instead, he decided to take every advantage he could from this new life while he came up with some alternative way to leave, to help in the fight against the Others. He spent as much time with his father (uncle) and siblings (cousins) as he could, delighting in having them all back with him and safe. This Bran would never betray him for power, this Sansa would never plot against him for a crown. At least, he would do everything in his power to make it so.
He passed more time in the crypts than he'd been able to in his previous life, leaving flowers for his mother and speaking with her in whispers. He'd had no time to adapt to being a Targaryen, had been left reeling from the truth and that had never once stopped. Even when he'd been largely left alone in the True North, Dany's blood on his hands had made it impossible to think of her. He was a kinslayer, but he hadn't wanted to acknowledge it. In this life he'd had time to come to terms with not being a Snow or Stark and was starting to appreciate that.
He'd spent half his childhood pretending to be Targaryens while at play and that wasn't any different for Joanna. She'd chosen Visenya and Rhaenys as often as she'd chosen Jonquil or Lady Jenny in the games she and her siblings played.
That was...still not something he was used to. His body was wrong, his voice was wrong, the way others treated him, even while he appreciated how much better much of it was, was wrong. Somedays he wanted to tear the dresses from his body and scream out that he was not a young woman, no matter what rested between his legs.
Yet he didn't, because that was not done. Maybe in some far-off lands in Essos. Maybe if he had found the courage to run away despite the increased dangers, to live life as a pirate or a sellsword by taking up a new identity...but even that, he knew, was unlikely. In the last world he'd been short for a man and in this one he was short for a woman; in the last world he'd been pretty for a man and in this one he was beautiful. Even in his masculine clothing, with his hair pulled back and cloth wrapped around his breasts to push them down, he still looked like a woman. He wondered if he would ever get to meet Brienne, to tell her how much he envied her body.
All he could do was act like a lady (a princess) and deal with the wrongness in private.
And there were other ways his mind and body being so at odds caused problems: Ghost was still born male, so that the direwolves did not seem to exactly match the Stark children. Jon was finding it was far easier as a girl to sway his father than it had been as a boy, it was how he'd even gotten to go to the execution, and so he had to rely on that to convince him the direwolves should be theirs. It was the difference, he thought, of looking like a Targaryen-influenced Ned and looking like a more refined Lyanna. His father couldn't bare to say no to the image of his dead sister.
And being Joanna might mean being blissfully without Lady Catelyn's outright hatred, as a girl would be no threat to her brothers' claims, but that didn't mean his interactions with others were much better. Theon no longer mocked and derided him, instead he flirted so heavily that it was improper. Jon had gotten used to relying on his body's instincts for avoiding the groping from visiting lords and their sons. And his moon's blood was...well, he didn't know why anyone thought women couldn't handle battle, after dealing with that.
Jon wasn't sure what else had changed, who else had changed, but he kept a careful ear out for gossip from the South. When news came that Jon Arryn had died, he felt panicked as he realized what was to come--he had so much to do. And he wasn't even sure if he'd accomplish anything at all.
He'd done his best to work with Sansa, glad she wasn't quite as flighty as she had originally been in their last life--this was not a girl who would fall for Joffrey's pretty looks. And he was probably the only one who could get Arya into dresses or paying attention at her lessons--they were true sisters, he'd whisper to her as they practiced swordplay, and they needed all the skills they could get. She would not be play fighting with the butcher's boy on the road to the Red Keep, she would, hopefully, not be attacked by a mad prince.
His nightmares of his last life increased, of what he'd imagined the Red Wedding looked like, or the tortures Sansa went through. But he also dreamt of better things, of the Wall and his friends there, of the Free Folk and Ygritte...of Daenerys, their soft bodies against each other's, her slender hands between his legs. He'd always wake up at that point, shuddering in a mix of revulsion and need, not daring to touch that part of himself he could barely stand to acknowledge.
***
Over the next few months, Daenerys did all she could to better herself and improve Daeron Targaryen's reputation across Essos...and, hopefully, back in Westeros. Her new body was talented with sword and spear and she had not lost the horsemanship she'd known in her past life. She had training in actual war, though she'd only taken part in combat from Drogon's back, and had listened intently to her commanders when they'd spoken of it, so her knowledge of such made life easier when plotting with the sellsword companies she could find.
She even found out why Illyrio was so interested in helping them, a fact she'd never had the chance to gain in a past life. His beloved second wife, the woman he still mourned years later, had been from a line of Targaryen bastards in Lys. Her mother had shared with her stories of her great-grandfather Maegor Targaryen, of his mad father Aerion and how close Maegor had come to kingship if only others could look past his father's reputation, and she'd dreamt of finding a way to meet her extended family, of being accepted among them.(1)
There were four Targaryens alive in the world right now, Daenerys realized, as she went into the meeting of loyalists after her talk with Illyrio. In her last life, it had been as many as there had been for as long as she could remember. She had died without any human children and Jon...she didn't think Jon would ever have any, after what happened. He had still been upset over causing Ygritte's death, actually being the one holding the weapon for Daenerys' would have surely broken him.
Her hand stroked down her flat, hard stomach for a moment as she realized that perhaps that's why she was brought back as she was--she doubted the same sacrifice would happen to hatch her dragons, as she couldn't become pregnant. That meant she could have children, children to carry on the family line. It was such a wonderful thought.
"Ser Jorah?"
She approached him separate from Viserys, always making sure to exist in contrast to her mad brother, as the better option for anyone wanting to restore their family's dynasty (or for those spies who may have loyalties she could sway). It had worked wonders so far, with many coming up to her in private to speak when they grew sick of dealing with her brother.
"Yes, your grace?"
How odd it was, to not have his attraction. She could have used it well in this lifetime to ensnare his loyalty earlier than she had before. Instead, she'd need other means of getting him in her camp, of maybe even feeding the Usurper false information about her.
"I was wondering if you could tell me more about the...Rebellion. I imagine you know more about the Northern involved, of what the Starks went through, than anyone else I've met."
He shifted, studying her, eyes flicking to Viserys as if wondering if she wanted the same lies that her brother did, before he came to the conclusion. "You know of...of you father, your grace?"
She grimaced. "I do. I know of the things he did, of why others would wish him gone."
That seemed to be enough to convince him and he wove the story as he knew it--of Lyanna Stark's "kidnapping," of Brandon Stark's foolish threats and Rickard Stark's attempt to save his heir, and of Eddard Stark's rise. He concluded, as any Northman surely would, that eventually Lord Stark had found his sister, only for her to die soon after, and he returned with her bones to Winterfell.
Daenerys had stayed mostly quiet during the speech, only asking a few questions when potentially still-living Targaryen loyalists had been mentioned, but now there was one question she needed an answer for.
"Is that all? He just...returned with his sister's bones, after everything?"
"Well, and his bastard, I suppose."
Daenerys gave a small frown, then made the leading statement, "The descriptions of him you and others have given me haven't made him seem the type of man to father a bastard."
"It surprised all of us, in truth. We'd never seen his eyes wander, he'd never been with a camp follower or a tavern wench, as far as any of us knew. But, the truth was in the babe--she was pure Stark."
She nodded in thought, dismissing him, and it was only after that she realized what Jorah had told her--"she." The baby Eddard Stark brought home was a girl. Jon in this world was a woman in perhaps the same way she was a man.
Excusing herself from the company she settled into her bedroom, alone, unsure of the feelings racing through her. Jon could still be hers, he would be no true threat to her throne. They surely must be meant to be together, if her change meant he, too, had changed. This time, he could be her Queen. She shivered, body heating up as she realized he could be the one to bare her children. Pureblood Targaryens, future dragonriders, come from the two of them.
Looking down at herself, her eyes widened. She could see the bulge in her trousers and realized exactly what it was she was feeling. With a breathless laugh, she touched herself, appreciating how easy it was to increase her own pleasure, now. Closing her eyes, she imagined a beautiful woman with Jon's hair and eyes, kneeling before her and declaring Daeron her king.
XxXxX
Notes:
(1) Aerion Brightflame is the notorious Targaryen who drank a cup of wildfire because he thought it would turn him into a dragon. His son, Maegor, was a child at the time and passed over for the kingship, never being mentioned again (in the histories we have so far) after that. Aerion was one of the brothers of Aegon the Unlikely who was ahead of him in the succession (and thus a brother to Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch, too). In the books, we know that Illyrio is plotting to put a character who claims to be Aegon VI Targaryen on the throne, but in the show this character doesn't exist and it leaves Illyrio's motivations very confusing. I just worked in one of the fan theories about the supposed Aegon VI for this.
